Speaker 1 (00:02):
In downtown Marion for the Matthews Sondiaker, a high school
football game of the Week featuring the Mount Vernon Yellowjackets
visiting the Harding Presidents. I'm Eric Moseley, and this is
countdown to kick off here on fourteen ninety WMRN. We
are so glad that you have joined us, and we
are excited to get this season started on the right foot.

(00:22):
Hopefully for the home Presidents it will be on the
right foot as they are trying to avenge their loss
last season. In the opener to Mount Vernon. Alongside me
is coach John Couzio and coach Gotta ask you, do
you think the weather's gonna hold up like this all season? Well,
this is perfect.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It's gonna be I think I looked at it low

what the tenth ball game the season last week it
rained like all week.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
But I'll tell you what. We're on turf tonight.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Both teams look like there's not too many guys on
the sideline with injuries, and I'm looking forward to a
great opener tonight.

Biden is dead set to get as much done as
possible before leaving office. That should frighten every American. Why
because nearly one trillion dollars of infrastructure and pandemic funds
have yet to be spent. When Biden pushes these funds out,
we could see another prolonged inflation surge, just like during COVID.
And I'm sure you remember the terrible effects that high

Join me right now as Harding head coach Chuck Chuck
Williamson and coach back to another season. It's hard to
believe it's here already. Right, It comes quick, Yeah, it does.
So let's just first talk about how that first season
went with the pre sees. What you saw that you like,
maybe some things that you looked at in the off
season and thought, man, we need to change a few
things now. Did it look overall to you?

Speaker 10 (05:08):
Yeah? It was interesting.

Speaker 11 (05:09):
Again. I came in late, so I got here I
think mid March, early March, so we missed a lot
of the off season, which I think you do a
lot of bonding there. You do a lot of you
know things, team building things, and we didn't get to
do that. You know, we had five seniors we got
this year, we got sixteen. It's just a familiarity with

(05:30):
the program. Our kids now know what expectations we have
of them.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
You know that.

Speaker 10 (05:34):
I think they had four coaches in four year or
something like that.

Speaker 11 (05:38):
So we you know, we're very excited about this year.
We got a really good vibe. You know, things have
been we had a great off season. You know, Coach Kern,
who does a great job for us on the defensive coordinators,
the head coach role. He uh last year at times,
I mean like when we played Highland, we put nine
in the moxy didn't matter. They just physically just moved

(05:58):
us and we could have put eleven and it didn't matter.

Speaker 10 (06:01):
So we we feel that we've addressed that. That's that problem.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
So we're excited.

Speaker 10 (06:06):
Defense looks good, the offense looks good. We got some
new faces there, so we're excited.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
And speaking of the new faces, new quarterback this year,
Connor Pennykins stepping in. He had played some quarterback previously.
Last season was receiver. What has been your thoughts on
how he's progressed. It's a lot to take on for
any player, but he is a veteran player. How have
you liked what you've seen? Yeah?

Speaker 11 (06:28):
I love what he does right now. He's very accurate
with the football. You know, we tell him all the time, Hey,
you know, here's here's the here's the corvette, here's the keys.
You gotta drive it.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
You know.

Speaker 11 (06:38):
He we put a lot on him to make decisions
and we you know, we give him a lot of
ways that he can do things. And you know we
do we rpo stuff. So he he he's got to
count the box. He has to know how many guys
are in there. Can we run it, can we block it?
Can we not block it? So you know, a lot,
he a lot goes into it and he's been at

(07:00):
It's really fantastic. He he learns every day. You know,
he's always asking great questions. So very excited about having
him run the show this year.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And he's not quite as big as what Alex Stokes was.
But are there things that with his physicality that you
like in that position because he is he was a receiver,
so it's a little bit different makeup.

Speaker 11 (07:18):
Yeah, I mean Alex actually honestly talk about Alex. I
just talked to him last night. He's doing really well
at Lake Erie. He's battled for the starting quarterback spot.
So I'm excited about for him about that. But yeah, Connor,
he brings it a little different, you know, moxie to
the table that you know, he's a little more accurate.
He his footwork's just a little bit better because we

(07:41):
got a whole offseason with him. So he does some
really good things and we're excited to have the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
And another big change with the personnel. You're moving Ray
j Scott Harble from wide receiver actually I believe he
was slot really now putting him in the backfield and
that's a recent change. What was your thinking behind that
and how you feel he's progressed?

Speaker 11 (08:01):
Ray just just such a tremendous athlete. One, he's very intelligent.
He knows our offense like the back of his hand.
There's not one thing that he doesn't. He not only
knows his position, who knew all four, all five, the
running back spot, in all four receiver positions, and he
catches the ball so well and he runs hard. So
you know, we kind of thought and let's put him

(08:22):
in a Deebo Samuel role so we can.

Speaker 10 (08:25):
Like we're gonna move him around.

Speaker 11 (08:27):
They won't know where he's gonna be because he could
be anywhere. We can put him on the outside, we
can put him in a slot, we can put him
in the back, we can put him anywhere. And like
I said, he's a mismatch, because he's just a mismatch.

Speaker 10 (08:37):
He's got speed, he's got power. Is very very good
thing to have.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Yeah, and who are some of the other players on
offense that maybe have stepped up for you this season
this preseason.

Speaker 11 (08:51):
Yeah, Keante Scott's a returner from He was our big
play threat last year. He's had a tremendous offseason. Dylan
Hallway is the other outside guy's another returning starter, started
all ten games for us. He's he did a great
job in the weight room, got bigger, stronger. Parker Davis
is the other slot receiver and again tremendous workout off

(09:12):
season for him.

Speaker 10 (09:13):
He's fast, strong.

Speaker 11 (09:15):
Up front, we got Will Adams, Jamarion start, Jamiaron coming
back on the offensive line, and park Parker Garcia coming
back in the off sudden that's to the line. And
then Ricky Johnson is a he played at the end
of last year. He's back, so you know, David Rich
is working at center right now. So we're excited. You know,

(09:36):
we get nine of the eleven of them and returning
starters that played ten games last year, so that's pretty big.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
And now we flip over to the other side of
the ball, the defense, which was really good last year.
But it almost sounds like the rumblings I'm hearing is
it may have taken a whole nother step forward this year.

Speaker 11 (09:52):
We believe it has, just because there's so much stronger,
so much faster. They really bought into coach kernsilosophy, and
they get after the two linebackers, Lucas Keller and Justin Long,
you know, returning starters.

Speaker 10 (10:08):
Both of them were the tops of mc IT tackles.

Speaker 12 (10:11):
J J.

Speaker 10 (10:11):
Starks.

Speaker 11 (10:12):
Nobody had a better off season that kid, did he?
I think he went he wrestled. I think you've wrestled
one ninety. He's going about two fifty right now, and
he can run Landon Keller.

Speaker 10 (10:22):
I was voted captain Darry Athletic.

Speaker 11 (10:24):
We had a couple of new additions. Cameron Fagg's the
track star. He's out there playing corner for us, and
he can run Josiah Gooden made the transition from offense
to defense.

Speaker 10 (10:34):
He's playing some defense for US.

Speaker 11 (10:37):
So Landon Adams is back from an injury and he's
had a tremendous couple of scrimmages. The first team we scrimmaged,
I knew the head coach was my son, so I said, well,
did you see out of us?

Speaker 10 (10:50):
And he said, always see up in the box.

Speaker 11 (10:52):
They said, wherever thirty three he is run away from
him because we can't block him.

Speaker 10 (10:55):
So it's good to have Landing back.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
And you you did lose Mike Wams off the defensive line.
And Mike ended up being what was it, second team
All Ohio last year, and and was I don't want
to say he was a surprise, but really took a
step up from his junior year to his senior year.
That's a lot to lose on that defensive front. But
it sounds like you kind of plugged a hole there.

Speaker 11 (11:17):
Yeah. Coach Van Meter does a great job. And coach
Chase Current also d line coach. They do a great job.

Speaker 10 (11:23):
They they do kind of the college modes. They go
by committee.

Speaker 11 (11:26):
They run him in and there it's like three and
four guys are running at you and they all could
play and they you know, they they're they've had great,
great summer camp and so we're excited.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
So the first game against Mount Vernon last season, it
was a tough opening game for you guys, felt like
it was a winnable game and you end up, you know,
having a lot of turnovers, just not a good ending
over there last season. New year, how you feel about
this team and that team that you're facing in Mount Vernon.

Speaker 10 (11:54):
They're very very good team. They're they're big, they're physical.

Speaker 11 (11:57):
Watching him on film, coach Weber, I knew him from
his day's at Tays Valley.

Speaker 10 (12:01):
Very excellent football coach.

Speaker 11 (12:02):
So they'll they'll be physical, they'll they'll be well coached.

Speaker 10 (12:06):
So you know, we'll have to bring our eight game
to walk away with a W.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
And what did you tell me earlier? The theme for
this season is.

Speaker 10 (12:14):

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Are there t shirts printed for that?

Speaker 10 (12:18):

Speaker 1 (12:20):
See yeah, that's awesome. Well coach, thanks for taking the time.
Good luck against Mount Vernon. Can't wait to watch.

Well, we appreciate everything you do.

We're back for Coptown to kickoff here at Harding Stadium
on fourteen ninety WMRN. I'm Eric Moseley, and let's talk
about some of the games that are coming up this week.
Everybody opening the season, obviously here in Marion County. Pleasant
is traveling to North Union and taking on the Wildcats.

(15:23):
Ashland is going to River Valley, Elgin makes a trek
over to Cardington, and Ridgedale travels all the way to Hilltop.
I believe coach that is in northwest Ohio almost near
the Indiana border, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, it's definitely going to have to be a business
trip to get over there.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah, they beat Hilltop last year, so ridgdal hoping to
start the season one to zero again. In the Northern Ten.
Three games happened yesterday between Northern ten schools. Gallion ended
up beating Winford forty nine to thirteen, Colonel Crawford beat
River fifty five to thirteen, and Tip and Calvert beat
Mohawk twenty eight to twenty seven. Tonight, Hope will allowed

(16:01):
and travels to carry That's our game on Magic ninety
five to nine. Seneca East travels to Ashland Cresview, Buckeye
Central at Crestline, and Upper Sandusky goes to northmorebu Cyrus
travels over to Riverdale now in the MOAC. CLEARFOK travels
up to Sandusky Perkins. Sandusky Perkins a team that's looking

(16:21):
to make a run of the state title this year.
Clearfok had a down season last year, first time in
a long time. They're hoping to bounce back and do
a little bit better this year, but starting off with
a tough one. Frederick Town travels to Highland. That's a
big game in that area. Both teams looking to start
the season off right. Highland replacing All World running back

(16:44):
Dan Nauman, so we'll see what they look like this year.
Lexington goes over to Ontario. Ontario's quarterback back Bob pen
Miller signed with Ohio State in the offseason. He's committed
to play wide receiver for them. He will be against
Lexington and Madison Comprehensive. Comprehensive goes to Shelby as the

(17:06):
Whippets hoping to start the season off right, defending their
MOAC title that they tied with Ontario in the KMAC.
Worthington Christian travels to Danville. East Knox goes to north Ridge,
Centerberg at Utica, Loudonville at Mapleton, Triad goes to Mount Gilliot.
Then a couple other area games of interest, Delaware Hayes
goes to Buckeye Valley, and Eastwood travels to Kenton. Any

(17:29):
of those games kind of stand out to you, Coach, I'm.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Kind of interested in the Pleasant North Union game. I
know Pleasant's real excited they go at a lot of
numbers this year going over to play Coach Jars team
from North Union. Co Ch Jar, you know every one
knows he played for Pleasant years ago and now he's
gonna have to defend his turf over there to his
all of them A marter and I believe his young son,

(17:55):
sophomore will be starting a quarterback. So that's kind of
interesting that game. Know, Ashland River Valley River Valley with
their home opener playing Ashland, they want to get off
to a good start. Elgin going over to Cartington. You
know they're going to go over there and hope to
take it to Cartington. Obviously Cartington always has a pretty

(18:15):
good sound team and you know, I'm really interested in that.
And well, I tell you we're rooting for coach Chapman
and the and the Ridgedale Rockets all the county schools
at the at Ralphie's the other night on Wednesday. I
think we picked all the county schools to have a
good night tonight. And and that also goes with harding

Back to countdown to kickoff here at Hardings Stadium, Eric
Mosley alongside coach John Kuzio. Right now, I want to
bring in our guy down stairs, Scott Cameron. Scott, you
had a check chants to talk to Mount Vernon's head
coach last week. Can you give us a little bit
about what that conversation was about.

Speaker 24 (21:07):
Guys, there are three things that were absolutely American apple
pie Opening day of baseball and week one of high
school football.

Speaker 14 (21:16):
And yeah, We're right in the.

Speaker 24 (21:17):
Middle what seems like a decades long opening night between
Mount Vernon and Marion Harding. You know, talking to both coaches, Eric,
they were both very complimentary to each other.

Speaker 14 (21:28):
You know, they do have a history.

Speaker 24 (21:29):
They coached against each other in the same conference, so
they know each other very well. Both teams talked about
hitting the weight room, building team unity and building together.
But they do really do have a really strong mutual respect.
It's kind of a little bit hard to get stuff
out of coach Weber. He's a little bit tight lipped,
but that means it'd be interesting to see what he
pulls out of the sleeve here Tony. But other than that, guys,

(21:52):
we got perfect weather, no wind, obviously, no rain.

Speaker 14 (21:56):
This is a great week one high school football.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
Opening Scott, can you hear me? It's coach up there. Hey.
You know. One of the great things about opening night.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
And I don't know if any of them told you this,
but you can't go ten and oh can't go undefeed
it unless you win that first one. And I know
the coach is probably excited. We always like to interview
coaches when they're O and O. And I'm sure you
had a really good interview, and they're going to be
excited to play. I was watching them before the game,
and I'll tell you what they look like. They're very

(22:26):
organized and they've got some pretty stout young men. So
I'm really looking for a great game tonight.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Absolutely all right, thanks for that, Scott. We'll be checking
in with you from time to time. And coach, you're right,
it's everybody's excited when we we hit the first game
of the season, because, like you said, there are no losses,
there's no wins either, but everybody's on the same level
plane right now.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Yeah, you know, when you go into the first scrimmage,
you don't really know what you have, and then you
come out of that and you make improvements. But they
say from the second in scrimmage to the first game,
the last scrimmage of the first game, you make the
most improvement, and then obviously from the first game to
the second game, and you try to keep fine tuning
things in bill momentum.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Throughout the year.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
But I know Harding's got some a couple of question
marks with their quarterback Connor Pennington starting first time, but
he's also a senior. He's played some ball, he's been
out on the field the last three years, so they're
looking forward to that. But I'll tell you what, He's
got a lot of sidekicks around him, and he's got
the running back Scott Harbault, Ray j Scott Harbaald. He's

(23:33):
got some receivers out there, Kia Kante, Scott Dylan Halloway.
And I'll tell you what. We're looking forward to them
spreading it out. Parker Davis look pretty quick out there.
Coach is talking big about him. So I'm looking for
their offense to maybe put some points on the board tonight. Well,
and you know, as we kick off a brand new season,
like we said, every team in the States starting off

(23:55):
oh and oh, same record. But you know, coach Chuck
Williamson his team, they have the memories from last season
struggles and they're still fresh in their minds. So I
kind of want to ask you, coach, you know, do
you think that adds pressure or motivation going into a
season for a team now? I really think And we
talked to a coach over at Ralphie's the other day

(24:17):
and one of the things that he said was that
from last year they came in and they put in
the program and the terminology was new and the way
they did things was new. They've been through a season
now and hopefully they it's things not knowing what to.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
Do are all over with.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
They're going to let the kids fly around and just
take the thinking out of it and just let them
play with their ability, natural ability and aggressiveness. And that
second year the coach, I could just tell he was
a lot more comfortable the other night we were talking
and had a little bit of a swagger and confidence
and his team and they've got a great crowd here

(24:55):
tonight and hopefully they don't disappoint anybody.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
Absolutely well, the prexy he's just made it to the field.
Brand new helmets this year, white helmets with the word
Presidents on the side, black and red stripe down the middle,
red face masks. They have black eat jerseys, white pants.
They're looking really sharp. Well, we're going to wrap up
countdown to kickoff right now. We're going to take a break.
When we come back, we will be just about ready

(25:20):
for kickoff of Mount Vernon at hard and you're listening

It looked so weird the first We're back here at
Hardings Stadium for its Knight's Matthew Hontakra a high school
game of the week, and Harding will be kicking off
to Mount Vernon and Scott real quick. You said you
saw Harding's defense. What did you see of them in
the scrimmage?

Speaker 24 (29:57):
Yeah, I went and saw their scrimmage last week. And guys,
I'm telling you that front seven or eight, if they
remain healthy, they are, if not the best, they are
one of the best front boxes in the conference. So
they're gonna get a chance to show off their goods
here to the Jackets.

Speaker 14 (30:14):
Here is kicking the ball off to Mount Vernon.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Awesome, okay, So back to kick four Harding is number
twenty two. Jackson Shipley back to receive for Mount Vernon.
Cannot see the number number twenty one, takes it at
the five yard line. That's Hunter Looney. He gets up

(30:38):
to the twenty five and tackled at the twenty seven
yard line. That's where Mount Vernon will take over first
and ten. Coach give us starting lineups for the Harding presidents.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
Yeah, here's that big defense. It's Harding's going to be
representing here tonight. Corner Josiah goodin free safety, Juju Glover.
We got at number eleven, Cameron Fags at the other corner.
Out side linebacker, Jayden Griffiths, linebacker twenty one, Landon Keller,
twenty four, Colton Sibrill. We'll get you here with the

(31:09):
rest of them here in a second.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
First and ten at quarterback Taylor Jake Taylor, senior quarterback
for Mount Vernon in the shotgun, one back next to
him and a flag. I believe that's a delay of game,
no outsides. Yeah, Harding got a little antsy that time.
They couldn't hold their position. They crossed over.

Speaker 2 (31:34):
Continuing on, we got Caden Marx at the nose, number
thirty two. Thirty three Lannon Adams back this year from
a injury, and I guess he's playing really well at
defensive end. Linebacker number forty. You'll hear a lot about
him justin long number forty two, outside linebacker, a lot
about him.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
He likes to blitz.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Lucas Keller defensive tackle fifty two, Jimmy Jeremy JJ Starks
you heard coach talked highly of him, number fifty two.
We're really looking forward to seeing how this defense swarms
to the football.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
He got a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
They looks like Mount Vernon's lining up a nice spread offense.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
Here.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
We'll see what happens. First and five for Mount Vernon,
off to the right.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Quarterback takes it now up the middle, and that's Taylor
up ahead for about a gain of two. Makes it
second down. Off the play there cartel Stinson who was
out at defensive back. The referees blew the whistle and
had him come off the field for some reason before
that play got off.

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Yeah, that was justin Long making the first tackle of
the year, six foot one, ninety senior for Harting.

Speaker 1 (32:40):
Second down in three for the Yellow Jackets.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Well, they've got ten in the box right now, four linebacker,
five linebackers across the board, and quarterback takes it again
and gets close to the first down. So right now
Taylor first two carries and he does get the first down.
It's Matthews Houndy atter a first down, first and ten.
Ball is up to the forty yard line. Yeah, that

(33:05):
Harding came adam right up the middle there, but to
no avail Mount Vernon picking up a first down, and
let's see if Mount Vernon will try to put the
ball in the air.

Speaker 1 (33:16):
So Taylor back to his left. Now he hands it
off to that back that is Stafford. Dakota Stafford gets stopped,
maybe a gain of one and that's just about it.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
There was fifty two in there, starts forty two Keller
and the host of others. There was at least four,
possibly five guys in on that tackle forcing a second
long here second nine.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
Again Jake Taylor at quarterback.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Mount Vernon is pretty big upfront, so they're going to
try to eilish the running game early.

Speaker 1 (33:51):
Dakota Stafford at his right hand off goes to Stafford.
He cuts it back to his right and he gets
out to the outside, up ahead to the fifty and
gets the Matthews hontiakra first down. It was stuff that
was supposed to go up the middle and then he
cut it to the backside. Coaches, coaches for harding going
have to stop that right away.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
Yeah, he did a nice cutback to the outside and
nobody was staying home. There really a lot of pursuit
over pursued and he was able to pick up a
big first down for Mount Vernon.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
First and ten at the Harding forty eight. Now pass
down the right sidelines and just out of the reach
of Lou Cupboard. I'll be second down. Yeah, a little
bit of hand fighting down the way, and that was
a Cameron Fags number eleven, five, ten one seventy five
junior on the coverage there. Ball was overthrown. Pretty good defense,

(34:39):
so good protection there for Mount Vernon on that pass.
So the offensive line doing a really nice job against
that big defensive front four Harding's be second tent second
down and long from the Harding forty eight yard line.

Speaker 2 (34:52):
Well, Mount Vernon's trying to establish a running game, and
when that happens, you can possibly get the defensive backs
and possibly linebackers getting litt nosey and coming up to
try to stop the run. At that time, they had
pretty good protection.

Speaker 1 (35:05):
Play clock down to three. Ball is hike handoff, goes
up to Stafford and he's stacked up just past the
forty seven yard line. So only about a gain of
one Actually you're saying no gain at all.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
Caden Marks number thirty two was in on that noseguard
and tell you what the defensive line right now is
definitely holding up. Linebackers are coming up and filling and
it looks like Mount Vernon's choosing go trips here to
the left side.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
Third down and long for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor back
to pass, looks to his left now he slings it
out there and gets the completion and the first down.
And that was not a good pass, but completed to
Mason Richards. I don't know what the defensive back was
doing there. That was Juju Glover.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Well, they ran two guys off and the outside guy
came in on the inside and ran a little slack
slant underneath. That was just a clearing pattern and there
was nobody to cover him. And at number five that
was Richards did a really nice job because it was
actually behind him and he made a great catch.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
Three wide receivers to the left. Now straight ahead is
Taylor and he's able to take it up ahead for
about three brings up second down.

Speaker 2 (36:22):
Yeah, right now Mount vern is having their way with
Harding's defense. We talked them up before the game and
one of the things that we want to mention they
have nobody at at least this time in the starting
lineup going both ways. So on a nice evening like tonight,
a little bit warm. It's actually kind of comfortable, and

(36:42):
that could pay dividends later on in the game.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
Second down and long eight yards to be exact, at
the Harding thirty five Now Taylor is right, throws it
out there just straight ahead, almost like a screen pass,
just in front of him, and picks up about two
more yards on that. That was complete to dude Mason Richards. Yeah,
a little run pass option there on a rollout. He
could run the ball if it was open, and that

(37:05):
time he chose to throw it. Picked up just a
little bit of yardage.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
Big third down play for Harding right now, if they
can stop him here, maybe force him to punt third
down and five down at the Harding thirty two yard line.
Two wide receivers to the left, one up top, one
back next to Taylor. Taylor scans the defense.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
Now he's back to pass under heavy pressure, overthrows the
receiver and that time really good coverage.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
Yeah, really good pressure by Keller. Lucas Keller five to eleven,
two hundred junior. He's in the backfield. He likes the
blitz on third down, and he came and he did
a good job of kind of laying off. Quarterback went down,
but the referee must have thought that he wasn't a
late hit. It was pretty good hit and just as
he was throwing the ball was thrown high, so real

(37:53):
good coverage. But looks like it's four down territory for
Mount Vernon.

Speaker 1 (37:56):
Well, they are at the thirty two yard line of Harding.
Fourth and five, three wide receivers left, one up top,
Taylor looking up top. Now he takes it and he
is sacked.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
There you go, there's Keller, there's forty two again, there's
thirty three.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
That's Lannon Adams.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
He's back from a year layoff of a big injury
last year. Boy, it's good to see him back. He's
a team leader. And Harding holds on. On the first
drive they gave a little bit, but boy, i'll tell
you what.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
One is crunch time. They came up with a big sack,
so tons of pressure up the middle there by the
President's defense and looked like it was going to be
a QB draw, but he was just swallowed up the middle.
So first and ten for the Prexy's at their own
forty yard line. Pennington back in shotgun. Now a whistle

(38:48):
and again the referees making somebody come off the field
before plays even run. This time it's Keante Scott.

Speaker 2 (38:58):
Yeah, some of the we'll get you some of the
lineup here. Wide receiver, Dylan Holloway, running back Raymond Scott, Harbolt,
wide receiver Keante Scott. He ran a diamond formation with motion.
This is going to be interesting.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
Pennington takes it down the middle, he throws it up ahead.
That's complete the Holloway and he takes it all the
way down.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Could be about the thirty five yard line, actually the
thirty four. Really good to see Connor Pennington right there,
right off the bat, hit his first patch. He sold
right in good protection. They had a diamond formation. Ran
one of the guys across the formation that just as
a decoy, and Pennington did a great job of putting
it right in there to Holloway. So first and ten,

(39:43):
that's Matthew Hontiaker first down to the mount vernon thirty
three yard line. Pennington hands no fix the handoff, swings
it out to Fleming Harris and he takes it up
ahead for about a ten yard gain on a swing pass.

Speaker 1 (39:58):
Well, I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
Pennington sitting right there like he's in a rocking chair.
Really good protection guys up front, and we'll talk about
those guys. Tackle Ricky Johnson, Jaden Florine Jacobs of the
other tackle, Will Adams at right guard, and David Richard
Junior at center.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Out in motion as horrible. He takes the swing, passes
the right up ahead of the twenty to the fifteen,
down to the ten and out of bounds at the
eight yard line. That's another Matthew Hontaker first down, big
play offense here for the Prexys.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
The other guard was Parker Vera Garcia. I'll tell you
what it's like taking candy from a baby. Right now,
these guys are marching down the field with a lot
of confidence and inserting into the lineup twenty seven Kuame
Scott will be coming in and.

Speaker 1 (40:49):
As time coming in for time out taken by Harding,
So we'll keep it right here to throw it down
to Scott. Cameron, Scott, what are you seeing down there?
This offense looks pretty explosive.

Speaker 34 (41:00):
You know.

Speaker 24 (41:00):
Honestly, guys going at the scrimmage last week as a
tale of two halves, the first half they just looked discombobulated.
Timing was bad just not good protection. And then when
they came out in the second half, everything was a
three step drop or a one step drop, and.

Speaker 14 (41:18):
It was just catch release, catch release.

Speaker 24 (41:20):
Just short ends, short slants and everything was just clicking.

Speaker 14 (41:24):
Boom boom boom, boom boom. And I'm seeing the exact same.

Speaker 24 (41:27):
This is the second half of Whitehall scrimmage just continued
to this week.

Speaker 14 (41:32):
And yeah, I know you mentioned Will the linebacker for Harding.
You know he is. He got a senior picture and
it is a picture of him with a bunch of pancakes.
So you know what he thinks.

Speaker 1 (41:42):
His job is.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Tell you what number two Ray J Scott Harbaud. When
he was over at Ralphie's the other night, he just
looked a certain way. But out here on the field
in his uniform, he looks like a load, doesn't he?

Speaker 1 (41:56):
Yeah, he does. And again referees telling at this time
of Keyante Scott again.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
Too many tiles, too many gloves. They never ever did
like the gloves. My son's will attest to that. I
always did a laugh about gloves and tiles.

Speaker 1 (42:13):
So first and goal ball is at the nine yard line,
motion play and it's giving off to Parker Davis. He
takes it to the right and up ahead to about
the three yard line. That was just a little shovel
pass on the motion. Right now, they're spreading the ball out.
They've had about four or five guys carry the football
or types of football.

Speaker 2 (42:33):
This offense looks like just a little run and shoot
out to the outside. And Connor Pennington is right sitting there.
He's got finesse. That's the thing that I've noticed him
on all his passes. He's not really slinging it. He's
throwing it just the way he needs to to get
the ball to the skilled positions. And I'll tell you
what it's working for him.

Speaker 1 (42:51):
Four yard game, second down and goal at the five.
Now Keante Scott over to the left side. Pennington tells
him to go back to the Rightington and shotgun with
ray J. Harbolt. Hands the ball off to Harbolt and
he gets maybe a yard and is tackled, so it
makes it third down.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
He tried to go off tackle to the left side
to no avail. The pretty stout defensive line for Mount
Vernon was ready for him and put the stops to
another up to a third and five. Let's see I
look for him to do a little rollout or quick
pass and let the like we said, skill guys go to.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
Work, all right. So third down and goal ball at
the five yard line, trip Ray j Scott Harbolt Pennington
fakes the pass, now takes himself over to the left
and he gets about two yards, almost broke away and
is tackled shure of the goal line.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
I actually liked the play call on that had trips
to the right, split to the left.

Speaker 1 (43:51):
They ran a little quarterback draw.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
Pennington's not really a big kid, but he was pulled
down from the side there. It looks like they're gonna
kick the ball here.

Speaker 1 (44:03):
Jackson Jackson Shipley in the kick. Yeah, Jackson Shipley does
all their kicking. He's a punter, kicker and kickoff man.
He is really good. He's got a strong leg returning
from last year. So about a fifteen yard kick and
that's up and good. So Harding gets on the scoreboard
first and makes it three to nothing. President's over Mount Vernon.

(44:28):
Great feeling for Harding right now.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
They broke the ice right off the bat had a
good defensive stop. So the band's cranked up. Looks hopefully
a good night for Harding tonight. We'll take a break.

Speaker 1 (44:38):

Speaker 2 (46:19):
Pull off returned up ahead to about the twenty yard
line by Mount Vernon number go ahead. I was just
gonna say number four Josiah Gooden on the tackle. We
want to give props to these young special team guys
and really did a nice job.

Speaker 1 (46:36):
So 's be first and ten for Mount Vernon. Down
three to nothing, five forty two left in the first period, lads,
and second series for Mount Vernon. I'll tell you, Eric.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
Harding is really looks like they're playing with a lot
of confidence right now. Almost a wishbone here up under center,
but a handoff and tackled in the backfield. That hand
off was to number twenty four Aiden Kennedy, so a
different formation there for the Yellow Jacks. Has spent the
whole first series in shotgun that time, almost a wishbone

(47:11):
six to two hundred pound defensive end. Landon Adams, boy,
they missed him last year, but he's here to play
this year. He's already making himself known. And these guys,
I tell you forty two Keller, these guys are really showing.

Speaker 1 (47:26):
A lot of leadership so far this year. On defense again,
the wishbone now running out faking the run and able
to complete it ahead was Taylor and it was completed
up ahead to number forty five Loop Mullins. But just
as he was getting ready to throw it, or after
he threw it he got hit. Yeah, Landon Keller was there,

(47:51):
number twenty one.

Speaker 2 (47:53):
He tried, really tried to make a great play up
by going over and knocking the ballway, but the receiver
call but he was down on one knee, so ball
wasn't able to be advanced.

Speaker 1 (48:03):
Third down and six at their own twenty seven. Now
they spread it out, three wide to the left, one
to the right, one back in the backfield, tailor two
step drop throws. The slams knocked up in the air
and incomplete. But I'll tell you what, coach, They're going
to the well a little bit too often here. Early
ye had good pressure again by Harding, and the defensive

(48:27):
backs were on him like a glove. And I'll tell
you what.

Speaker 2 (48:29):
That ball could have been intercepted, and if it was,
they're going to take it to the house or get
a great field position that ball. The defense is swarming.
Harding has always had really good defensive backs, and they
they're missing some guys from last year. But I'll tell
you what looks like some of the younger guys are
stepping up.

Speaker 1 (48:46):
Hayden Hicks. Hayden Hicks back to punt. But the ball
doesn't make it to him, so he is down as
he kneels to get it.

Speaker 2 (48:54):
This is a gift for Harding right there, Landon Keller
number twenty one. You're gonna hear his name a lot
and his brother forty two Keller. I'll tell you what
he was in there. Harding's gonna take over first and
ten on about the what that's.

Speaker 1 (49:10):
A fourteen year ten yard line man. So Harding in
great field position here, it'll be a Matthew Hondaker a
first down, and Harding wants to add on a I
know don't want to settle for field goals every time
they're down in the red zone, but if they can
move the ball like they did, they're going to break
it in. Three wide receivers to the right, one to

(49:32):
the left. Back in the backfield is ray j Harbolt's
pitch goes out to him the left up ahead to
the ten. He picks up about three or four yards,
making it second down.

Speaker 2 (49:42):
I tell you, I know this is only the first
game in Pennington's just sitting in there that time he
had an option, Fliff, did my heart good to flip
it out there to get some Yardis there?

Speaker 1 (49:54):
Positive yard each he's just distributing the ball. I'm not
going to.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
Say managing the team, managing the offense, but he definitely
is managing the offense and doing so far everything right.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Parker Davis comes into the game. He sets up wide
receiver on the left side next to Scott Harbolt, next
to Paint in the backfield. Now Parker Davis goes to
the right up ahead to the ten to five and
into the end zone for the touchdown.

Speaker 2 (50:21):
Parker Davis, once he made the cut, it was all
over that. He saw the crease and took it to
the house. Some great blocks on the outside by the receivers.
If you're gonna play football and you're want to be
a receiver, it's not all about catching the football. It's
about making that block. And nothing better than to make
that touchdown block. And I'll tell you what, Parker Davis

(50:42):
took it to the house. Harding right now is having
a good time at their own field.

Speaker 1 (50:46):
So Parker Davis, that's the second time he's run that
motion shovel pass sweep and but the first time a
nice gain on at that time. Really good job cutting
it up in partner. David is one of those players
the past few years, he's had a lot of speed,
He's a tough kid. Now he looks like he's to
be one of the featured players on this offense.

Speaker 2 (51:08):
Well, one of the things that I'm noticing right off
the bat, and we've talked about this, and coach and
I talked the other night, is, boy, if you can
get everybody on the same page. And I think right
now he and his staff have got everybody so far
on the same page. All the kids on the sideline
are engaged. They got the offense coming to one down
to the offensive coaches. They got the younger players standing

(51:30):
there watching the game, watching and learning. And I'll tell
you what it's good to see here at Marion Shipley
back for the extra point. Harbolt holes, snap back, kick,
snap down, and it is through. So with three twenty
nine left in the first period, Harding is on top

(51:51):
ten to nothing over Mount Vernon. You want to go
down to Scott real quick. Scott, you had some information
on the whole towel situation down there.

Speaker 14 (52:00):
Yeah, it's a.

Speaker 10 (52:03):
Towel gate.

Speaker 14 (52:03):
I don't know, but I basically what happened.

Speaker 24 (52:06):
I asked one of the officials, I said, why are
players leaving the field was to deal with towels, and he said,
there's a logo on him and that's a point of interest.

Speaker 14 (52:13):
And I understood as a point of interest a few years ago.

Speaker 24 (52:16):
You know, nil does not exist in the high school
everything else. So the other thing is, you know, we
saw that botched pump by Mount Vernon and guys, I
was watching the Mount vern special teams right before the game.
That's the last thing they warmed up on and it
looked really troublesome for them. So that punter, he basically

(52:37):
has a bad snap and he went down like he
was trying to get a ground ball. Hard ground ball
is a shortstop and he just puts me on the ground.
And so it's gonna be interesting see if Mount Vernon
will just go for it on fourth down or if
they'll take a chance with the shaky punt game.

Speaker 1 (52:52):
Yeah, that's a good point, coach. If you have troubles
with that long snap, I mean, what what do you
kind of end up doing? Sometimes, well, you've got to
keep working on it.

Speaker 2 (53:03):
And a lot of times it's not going to be
a lineman type person that's going to be the snapper.

Speaker 1 (53:07):
It's got to get your.

Speaker 2 (53:08):
Best skilled guy and teach him to do it, because
you've got to have a punch snap and right now
Mount Vernon they're shooting himself in the foot once again.
The receiver kind of dove for the ball about the
eight yard line.

Speaker 1 (53:23):
Well what he did, here's what he did. That that
is considered an out of bounds on Mount Vernon or
on Harding, a kickout of bounds. What he did was
he he dove out but touched the ball out of bounds,
which means it's an out of bounds.

Speaker 2 (53:39):
I thought he he actually took it out of bounds.

Speaker 1 (53:42):
No, no, So that brings the ball up ahead. Not
a great kick by Shipley. I think he was trying
to pin him a little bit in the corner. But
good heads up there by the Mount Vernon player to
let that go. So it'll be first and ten at
the Mount Vernon thirty five yard line.

Speaker 2 (53:57):
Well, one of the things Mount Vernon has got their
backs against the wall here because it doesn't look to
me like they can match speed with Harding's defensive backs
and people up front.

Speaker 1 (54:07):
Harding's playing coffee. There's a throwdown Phil, It's complete down
to Ronicker and that was just almost a pop pass,
a linebacker was on Ronecker. He's their big tight end,
but wasn't really paying much attention and Ronicker was just
taking that lob pass and get it ahead.

Speaker 2 (54:25):
Yeah, he kind of snuck in there right over the
middle that tight end just as I was speaking and
said I didn't think they could get behind him. Somebody
missed an assignment there. But Keller number forty two was
putting a lot of pressure on the quarterback but wasn't
early enough.

Speaker 1 (54:39):
Up ahead by Taylor takes the run, now goes to
the right, gets about two yards, brings up second down. Yeah.
Mount Vernon not panicking here.

Speaker 2 (54:48):
They've got a pretty solid senior laden team, but this
is an important series for him here with two forty
nine to go down ten points here at Hardings Stadium.
Harding playing pretty tough, and this is about where they
fizzled out in the first series.

Speaker 1 (55:05):
Slot right, wide right and wide left. Now over to
the right as tailor and he throws it. I think
he was past the line of scrimmage when he threw it,
but hey, let him have it. And he threw that
right before he could step out of bounds. That's a
first down up ahead to the twenty yard line.

Speaker 2 (55:24):
Well, you know number thirty two Cayden Marks defensive lineman
six one two fifteen was on the prow and he
was just getting ready to shove him out of bounds,
and he kind of led up thinking the quarterback steps
out of bounds, he didn't want to get a penalty,
and uh, in that case, he might have been better
off just to go ahead and take the shot. And
the quarterback was able to get it released and pick

(55:46):
up a big first down right along the sidelines.

Speaker 1 (55:48):
Matthew Hondaaker first down, first and ten at the Harding
twenty as Taylor, waiting to snap, takes it over to
the right and he is tripped up nice. It's up
the middle there by Harding.

Speaker 2 (56:01):
That was long number forty, justin Long, six foot one
ninety senior. We had him over there at Ralphie's the
other night, and what a great young man.

Speaker 10 (56:11):
You know.

Speaker 1 (56:12):
The thing that it was very interesting to me. He's
a swimmer.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
Also, what a contrast in sports swimming in football. But
I'll tell you what, probably is a great conditioner and
he enjoys it and he excels in it very well.
So just these kids do whatever they can to get
in shape and play the sports that they like to do,
and that's a great asset to all of them.

Speaker 1 (56:35):
Second down and eight, Now the handoff to the right
to Stafford and he gets a couple of yards, brings
up third down. Coach. They're running everything to the right.
I don't think they've run anything to the left side.
You gotta have a little bit of diversity here with
your run game. I would think Harding's going to nail
in on that pretty quol.

Speaker 2 (56:56):
Harting is really pursuing that way too, So I look
for them to come back with some kind of a
counter to the outside, reverse to the to the backside.

Speaker 1 (57:04):
If their coaches up on.

Speaker 2 (57:05):
The box or watching, that's what they could come out with.
They were a little bootleg action to the backside. I
really liked their tight end. Big kid number nine, Bronker Wronker.
I'll tell you what, he's a great target to go
for and uh run a drag across the middle and
boot little boot action would be a nice.

Speaker 1 (57:24):
Target for him. So they're I don't know, I guess
there was a penalty. I don't know what they were saying.
The referee blew the whistle and he went to talk.
They have mis here apparently he didn't have it on.
So it's third down and six at the Harding sixteen

(57:45):
yard line. Taylor back to pass three step, dropped lobs
it in the left side of the end zone and
almost intercepted double coverage out there. It was meant for
Luke Cupboard and that brings up fourth down. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (57:58):
Mount Vernon ran a little bunch formation to the left.
They had three receivers bunched up here to the outside
right off of the tackle and tried to run a
little Chris cross and catch the guy on a flag pattern.
Number eight for Harding was right there on the spot.
I thought he had a chance to intercept that. The
Cartel Stintson defensive back six foot one, ninety sophomore, so

(58:22):
he's getting some action tonight. Looked real good on coverage.

Speaker 1 (58:25):
So Scott just let me know that right now, it
would appear that they are trying to run everything away
from Landon Adams. That's one of the players that coach
singled out on defense as just being a really strong
defensive player. So they're running away from whatever side Adams
is on, and that would make a lot of sense.

Speaker 2 (58:44):
Well, the problem they have is they've got two colors
inside there, one on the outside, one on the inside
that they've got to try to run away from. And
you only have only three places to run left, right
and middle. So oh, there goes Harding. They jumping off side.
They're a little bit anxious.

Speaker 1 (58:59):
So fourth and Harding jumps off side on the long
count won't give Mount Vernon a first down, but it'll
be fourth and about one, so a lot easier to
manage there. But now Harding just has to pay attention
to the snap count and uh, fire off, but not
get caught going off sides.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
The other thing they've got to do is look inside
to the football. Don't even pay attention to the sound.
Just look inside to the football. When it's snapped and
they go.

Speaker 1 (59:26):
Taylor up under center, QB sneak more than likely it is,
and he does go ahead and he's close. I think
they're going to give it to him.

Speaker 2 (59:35):
That time they ran to the left, Eric they went
that way, pick On up first down. Harding's defense has
been out there quite a long time here with one
oh one to go.

Speaker 1 (59:45):
Up ten, so Harding looking to stop Mount Vernon first
and goal for Mount Vernon down at the Harding seven.
So actually it looks to me like it's the nine
yard line. They it on the board as the seven
handoff goes to the right, but tackled right away is Stafford.

(01:00:08):
Maybe a gain of two brings up second down.

Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
Yeah, fifty two starts overranning and he cut inside and
uh he's there, got caught inside. I tell you, I'm
impressed by number thirty three for them Stafford. He's only
a sophomore, so he's really stepping up and carrying a.

Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
Lot of the uh tot in the rock a lot tonight.
So far in the first quarter, two ride receivers to
the left, short slid on the right back to passes Taylor.
But a penalty flag and a false start that moves
mount Vernon back.

Speaker 2 (01:00:47):
And they put Harding. Put Jerry Williams in number twelve,
defensive back five ten seventy five senior. I know that
coach Kern likes to run his defense with a d
defensive line, and he may substitute some defensive backs in
certain situations. I know they're not going to take the
linebackers out, but in defensive ends, but unless they have

(01:01:08):
to for a break. But right now, they try to
pick on Williams, but they weren't able to get the
playoff without.

Speaker 1 (01:01:17):
The quarter running to an end. So that's the end
of the first period and here at Harding, Harding on
top ten to nothing over Mount Vernon will take a
break when we come back well off the start of
the second period. You're listening to high school football in
fourteen ninety WMRN number.

The Matthews Honda Akurra High School Game of the Week.

Speaker 1 (01:02:39):
Start of the second period here at Harding High School.
Matthew Honda High School Game of the Week herding on
top ten to nothing. Eric Mosley alongside coach John Couzio,
Scott Cameron our sideline reporter Tonight Mount Vernon. After the
penalty be second and second and goal from the twelve

(01:03:01):
wishbone formation. Back to pass though is Taylor. He's getting
pressured and he just throws it away and intercepted by Harding.
Up ahead all alone is Carl Stenson up to the
fifty forty five and out of bounds. There just a
bad decision by Taylor.

Speaker 2 (01:03:19):
He was getting pressure and I'll tell you what the
worst thing you can do is not only throw into
the middle across the field, but he threw clear across
the field a rainbow. One of the things I would
have loved to have seen is him slow down and
let his guys catch up to get one block, and
he would have taken that to the house.

Speaker 1 (01:03:38):
So there is a penalty flag back at the thirty
nine yard line. But just to your right, coach, just
a bad pass there, and that penalty is on Harding
or no, it's on Mount Verne. Excuse me.

Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Right now, Harding can get something here, go up seventeen
to nothing early in the second quarter. I don't think
Mount Vernon they can run the football. Seems like they've
been able to run the football, but I don't think
they're gonna have the catch up offense tonight. We'll see,
but this is a really important series. Should be a

(01:04:19):
fresh offense going out there. They've been on the sideline
probably for about six to seven minutes.

Speaker 1 (01:04:25):
So one thing, you know, want to mention. Harding does
run a single platoon offensive defense, so only the players
are playing on offense only play on offense. The players
playing on defense only play on defense, whereas Mount Vernon
is running players two ways. So you're right, coach, that
can really wear down a team. So the penalty was

(01:04:48):
on Harding. The referee right now, The referee has confused
me completely, and I think it's just because I can't
hear him, But apparently some sort of unsportsman like brings
Harding all the way back to the their own thirty
nine yard line. But first and ten four Harding right there, it.

Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Looks like they're gonna run the twins to the left,
split to the right, one back with Pennington motion in motion.

Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
But Pennington passes it and he is actually keeps the
ball and now Pennington throws it out of bounds. Good
decision there by Pennington. It was actually I think it
was supposed to be a little option with the handoff
to the man in motion, which is Parker Davis, but
mount Vernon broke through the middle. Paynton got out of
that situation and rolled out through the ball out of bounds. Yeah,

(01:05:34):
that was the first time in the game that he
had to make a decision in regard to it, just
instead of just throwing the football on timing he was
about to get tackled, he ducked away. He showed some
good foot speed to get to the outside of the
left side and made the great decision to throw it
out of bounds. So, second down and ten from the
Harding thirty nine yard line, Pennington in the shotgun. He's

(01:05:56):
back to pass, three step drop, little screen underneath Toll.
He gets ahead to the thirty or forty four So
picks up about four yards, brings up third down.

Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
I really like to play call there, picking up some
yardage there, positive third down. It's a manageable third down.
Now Pennington, he had what touch does he have on
the football. I'll tell you what he knew just to
get it to him and was firm but not hard.
And I'll tell you what gave something for rage Ad

(01:06:27):
to handle and picking.

Speaker 1 (01:06:28):
Up a nice manageable third down. And his only incompletion
was when he threw it out of bounds. Now he's
talking to his wide receivers on this side, which are
Parker Davis and Keante Scott. Now Davis in motion to
the right, he goes all the way across, now Paynton
underneath and oh interception overthrows up ahead to the thirty five,

(01:06:52):
thirty twenty and tackled at the fifteen. That interception by
Hayden Higgins. And that was just a poor pass there
by Pennington.

Speaker 2 (01:07:02):
Yeah, just a little bit high and the receiver went
up for as high as he could. But I'll tell
you what, he's got to settle back down, nothing hurt,
let his defense go to work. It's a long game,
football game. Ten thirty eight to go. In the second quarter.
But uh, big break for Mount Vernon. They made their
break and now let's see if they can capitalize on it.

Speaker 1 (01:07:22):
When I get what Pennington's trying to do. He has tall,
wide receivers, so he's trying to put it in a
place that only his guy can get it. Unfortunately, that
time just a little bit too much on it, a
little bit too high. So first and ten at the
harding fifteen for Mount Vernon, you have to figure Mount
Vernon's got to take advantage here. And now Mason Richards

(01:07:45):
at quarterback, so he runs to the right. Now back
up the middle. He's wrapped up right away and taking
down maybe a gain.

Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
Of one brings up second down. Yeah, Caden Marks number
thirty two, six fifteen was there. I looked like Keller
with one of the Kellers twenty one, that's Landon Keller.

Speaker 1 (01:08:07):
Was there.

Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
These guys, I'll tell you what gave up one yard,
tough yard. I look for him to try to throw
it go to the wide side of the field. They
got three receivers, trips to the left and twins to
the right.

Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
Nobody in the backfield with the quarterback. And again don't
know why Mason Richards is in the game instead of
Jake Taylor. Don't know if he was injured. I see
I thought I saw Taylor standing over there. It might
have been the interception he threw last quarter and now
a false start. One of the offensive linemen jumped as
a man was in motion, so mount Vernon shooting themselves

(01:08:42):
in the foot quite a bit. And you're right, coach,
he you know he did throw an air reception the
previous series, so that could have been. Maybe maybe they've
had a quarterback competition, two guys that are pretty close
and they're trying to figure out who who can play
better at that position. So maybe that's why Mason Richard
getting the chance right now, So it'd be second down

(01:09:03):
and fourteen. Man in motion is Maverick Gregory. Now Richards
takes it to the right and he's tackled right away,
does get up ahead for about a yard and a half.

Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Real nice played by Colton sebro defensive line six one
two hundred sophomore number twenty four, defensive end. He wasn't
faked away, faked by the motion and everything going to
the left. He stayed at home and was able to
bring the quarterback down. And now Mount Vernon has faced
with about a third and twelve or thirteen.

Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Let's get it down to Scott real quick. Scott what
he got?

Speaker 10 (01:09:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 24 (01:09:40):
Coach Williamson was saying before the game that Jay Taylor
and Misson Richards number four, number.

Speaker 14 (01:09:46):
Five the quarterbacks.

Speaker 24 (01:09:47):
He said, they almost look identical, they play identical, so
I don't know which one is going to be the quarterback.
So I think it was kind of a competition sort
of thing at Jermaine Stanley Jackson kind.

Speaker 1 (01:09:57):
Of deal, all right, thanks Scott. Third down and long
back to cat passes Mason Richards. He just throws it
way too far ahead. Good coverage thereby harding the number eleven.
Cameron Fags coming out for football this season. He's a
great track runner and right there does great in coverage. Yeah,
he was on. He was covering him like a blanket.

Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Like I said earlier, young man from Mount Vernon has
the hyth on him.

Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
Number one, that's Hubbard.

Speaker 2 (01:10:26):
But Fags was right there in bump coverage and he
could not get away from him.

Speaker 1 (01:10:31):
Quarterback was pretty much forced to throw the ball. A
number seventeen now in place kicker Montoya gave Montoya back
to kick it This looks to be about a thirty
five yard field goal from the right hash snap back
kick is up and that looks like it's good. So

(01:10:53):
Mount Vernon able to get on the board. Eight thirty
seven left in the second period, Harding's still on top
ten to three. Will take a break. You're listening to

Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
Ball goes to ray j a harbolt and he goes
through his hands but ends up in the end zone.
He was ready to take off with that one, just
didn't watch it in So it's a touchback. Harding will
have the ball up at the twenty yard line.

Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Well, it's a good time to see Connor come back
after a little bit of adversity. He threw an interception,
but see if he can get gathered back and see
if the team will rally around him, which I figure
they will. Mount Vernon picking up a little bit of
momentum there picking up three points. But I would say
that was a pretty good victory there on that situation

(01:12:51):
where hard Mount Vernon had the ball deep into Harding's
territory and had an opportunity to put seven on the board,
but only got three, so Harding should be pretty.

Speaker 1 (01:12:59):
Happy about no backs in the backfield. Three wide receivers
to write one the left, Davis in motion now rolling
to the riose painting. He throws it up ahead to
Davis at the twenty up to the twenty five, cuts
up to the thirty across the thirty for Matthews Hondakra
first down.

Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
I really like what they're doing with him coming around
the outside. That's Parker Davis, six senior. They're running him
in motion, giving him the ball on the jets sweep.
They're running him in motion and then also running the
little pass five yard pass. It's not a difficult pass
for Pennington to throw and then let Parker Davis do
his work and picking up a big first down right

(01:13:36):
off the bat.

Speaker 1 (01:13:37):
First and ten at the Harding thirty one yard line.
Pennington with Ray J Scott Harribolt behind him to his right,
two slots and two wide. Now one of the wide
comes back in the backfield Dalan Holloway and now an
option played by Pennington. He takes it up ahead, but
a penalty flag over on the far side. Painnington did

(01:13:58):
get about a yard looks like it's going to be
on the prexies.

Speaker 2 (01:14:02):
Yeah, I think there's two guys moving. I think Holloway
came back. I thought he didn't get set. The other
guy was adjusting also on the same side out there.

Speaker 1 (01:14:11):
I think there was a little bit too much movement there,
you know what, coach, I mean, some mistakes here by
the presidents, but overall, I'm pretty impressed by what I'm seeing,
especially on offense.

Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
Yeah, I really like the way the team is engaged
right now. The younger players are watching the game, trying
to learn. I see the freshman down there in the
red jerseys. They're all watching and so far, you know,
they coach has got them believing in each other and
they really trust each other. Let's see what happens here
with Pennington back to pass Paynton across the middle. That

(01:14:44):
is complete on a little crossing pattern up ahead to
number thirteen Janye fleming Harris, and that brings it back
to the original line of scrimmage, brings up second.

Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
Down and ten.

Speaker 2 (01:14:57):
I'll tell you what, if you're a receiver playing for Hard,
you really probably love it because Pennington is really distributing
the ball to pretty much everybody they don't really have
a glorified tight end. They're all pretty much built about
the same with a lot of speed in the backfield.
Holloway now the fake to Harbolt and Pennington ends up

(01:15:18):
getting pressured from the right side and sacked. One of
the things that I would like to see, and I
know that's still in the first half, is Harbalt hasn't
been really given too much of an opportunity to touch
the football. And I tell you we want to see
his explosiveness, and I know the coaches do also, but

(01:15:39):
they've got some things up under their sleeve to try it.
Right now, he's still lining up in the backfield.

Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
Third down in twelve Pennington and Shotgun takes the snap,
goes deep. He's got a man and knocked away. It
was lobbed up there, intended for Keante Scott and being
lobbed up there, the defensive back number eight Hayden Higgins
able to recover and knock that ball away. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:16:03):
I like the call. I think a good pass, deep
pass early in the game. I always like to try
to throw a deep one in the first series or
second series. You got to get those defensive backs from
coming up and filling off tackle and it was really
that was actually had pretty good touch on the football,
but to no avail. Harding force to punt, so Shipley

(01:16:24):
back to punt back to receive four. Mountain Vernon number twenty.

Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Three Carter Harris and ends up going on ice kick.
It was actually headed towards Hunter Looney and took about
a ten yard bounce pass and he thought about picking
it up, realized that the whole defense was right there
and let it go. So a good role for the Prexies.

(01:16:51):
He there's nothing wrong with.

Speaker 2 (01:16:52):
Punting the football, especially when you're on turf and you
get the good bounce. That doesn't seem like there's much
win tonight, but boy, that ball took a great hearting bounce.

Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
And Mount Vernon with six forty nine to go down.

Speaker 2 (01:17:05):
Ten to three here at Harding Stadium, I see what
they plan to do here to try to get this
thing tied up before the half.

Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
So Mount Vernon back on offense and back in the game.
Jake Taylor at quarterback up under center. Now they're going
back to that wishbone. He hands the ball off and.

Speaker 2 (01:17:24):
Tackled right away, maybe at the line of scrimmage. That's
Lennon Adams. I'll tell you what he missed all last year.
And he is really hungry tonight and just loving it
out there. And I tell you when you miss a
year and you're a football player. And that kid is
six to two hundred senior and he's really shown his

(01:17:46):
whares tonight. Second down and ten at the Mount Vernon
twenty one. Now the handoff to the left, that's to
Aiden Candy and he gets up ahead about six yards.
Nice game there by Kennedy running to the left side. Yeah,
that was twenty four over there, Colton Cybral and number
eleven Cameron Fag's defensive back on the tackle over there

(01:18:11):
and forcing Mount Vernon into a third down situation. They're
having a hurry up young man, just getting onto the field.
Two bad looks like that wishbone again.

Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
So third down in three and Harding jumps off sides
again that time number twenty four Colton Cybral or Cybril
And so you know, now that's an automat first down.

Speaker 2 (01:18:36):
It's all about down and distance. Third and less than
five yards. You've got to or any time, you've got
to watch the football. If you're a defensive lineman and
you cannot move until the ball is snap, so there's
nowhere to go. Don't listen to the quarterback. Don't listen
to the sounds.

Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
So Verse and ten Matthews Honda. After first down, five
point thirty six left until halftime. Taylor up under center,
hands the ball off to the left and now breaking
through up ahead to the forty and pass the forty
five to the fifty. But a penalty flag in the backfield.
There's a good run by Dakota Stafford, but I'll hold
that's why it was a good run, So that one's

(01:19:13):
coming back. Yeah, I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (01:19:16):
Stafford's really running the football real well for Mount Vernon,
but that won't count. Looks like a block in the
back and they're going to be coming back. Really big
break for Harding here with five twenty four to go
in the first half. I know they want to try
to stall this drive out, get the ball back and
possibly put some more points on the board here. But

(01:19:39):
the first thing they've got to do is keep Mount
Vernon from putting together a drive.

Speaker 1 (01:19:45):
So it'll be first down and twenty all the way
back to the Mount Vernon twenty three yard line, and
Mount Vernon kind of an identity crisis here with them,
they'll go oh spread, tried to run the whole first
offensive series and spread, then they went out into the wishbone.

(01:20:05):
Then they go back to the spread. Now they're back
out in wishbone. Hand off to the left side, back
again to Shipley and he breaks it free forty to
the fifty and that's a first down Matthews Honaker first
down for Mount Vernon, the exact same play. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
Mount Vernon's size up front has definitely taking the toll
on Harding's defensive line. They're a little bit bigger, and
they're thinking that they're gonna be able to run the
football there. That's why they're going to that wishbone formation,
running hurry up up to the line.

Speaker 1 (01:20:34):
Scrimmags that Stafford again to the left side and he
is stacked up a gain of about two there for
Mount Vernon. I want to run through some scores real
quick in the area. Pleasant up sixteen to nothing over
North Union, Hope, will Alloud and Carry tied at seven.
Northmore twenty eight, Upper Sandusky, Nothing, River Valley and Ashland
are tied at zero's after the first quarter. Elgin and

(01:20:57):
Cardington at zero after the first Quartermount Gilliad up twenty
to six over Triad or excuse me, Elch's up fourteen
to nothing. No, I think it's Cardington. Or Cardington's up
fourteen to nothing.

Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
Just got my roving reporter over at the Cardington.

Speaker 1 (01:21:17):
Yeah, sent us that in and now a time out
by Harding I think or no, somebody else coming out
of the game. Must have must have been either an
injury or there's a Yeah, I think it's an injury.

(01:21:38):
So Harding, okay, I don't know what's going on the referees. Okay,
I think they're straightening it out now, but must have
been an injury. Number eleven, it looks like Cameron fags.
They so second down and seven mount Vernon at the

(01:22:03):
Harding forty six. Handoff goes to number twenty eight Maverick
Gregory and he gets up ahead just short of the
forty yard line. They mount Vernon's pulling the guard and
kicking out on that left side. They're finding something over there.

Speaker 2 (01:22:20):
They're picking on these guys on that side, and they
just felt it. In the first quarter. They tried to
throw the football too much pressure. Obviously, the interception kind
of got a gun shy there, so they just decided
they're going to keep the ball and try to do
what they can offensively on the ground.

Speaker 1 (01:22:38):
Hand off to Stafford straight ahead and he breaks through
for the Matthews Sondiaker first first down, all the way
up to the thirty four yard line.

Speaker 2 (01:22:46):
And you're gonna see a lot more of this in
the second half because it's working for Mount Vernon right now.

Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
Harding has got to come up with a big turnover.

Speaker 2 (01:22:54):
Somebody has got to figure out how to stop Stafford there.
They're just running basic off tackle plays right and left
and picking up big yardage.

Speaker 1 (01:23:03):
And they tried to run the quarterback early on too.
They've gotten away from that. So again it's Taylor's back
in eric yep number four.

Speaker 2 (01:23:10):
But I don't think they're gonna like to really throw
much with him right now.

Speaker 1 (01:23:15):
They don't need to in a second series in a row.
Here with Taylor. Now he hands off to the left
side that's Gregory and makes it up ahead to about
the twenty eight yard line. So now we talked about
how they kept running to the right side that whole
first quarter. Now running everything to the left side. I mean,

(01:23:36):
this is a this is a really hard team to
figure out on offense. This Mount Vernon team.

Speaker 2 (01:23:41):
Yeah, they're picking on those guys on the excuse me
left side there, excuse me harding is catching and not
delivering right now. On the defensive line, the linebackers, there's
nowhere for them to stunt or blitz or to fill
a hole because the defensive line is getting.

Speaker 1 (01:23:58):
Pushed back a little bit. Afford cuts it to the
right side and up ahead across the twenty five to
about the twenty four yard line, makes it third and short.

Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
That was Lucas Keller on the tackle there, and big
play here if they could. Of course, they're going to
go four down territory and they're also in field goal range.

Speaker 1 (01:24:19):
Up under center is Taylor and another jump off size.
I mean, that's something right now. You can you can
say something about it being the first game this season.
When it happens a couple times early. That's four times
at least four times already in the first half. That's
when it's like, okay, guys, your heads aren't screwed on
straight right now.

Speaker 2 (01:24:39):
Well, they lost concentration, and you know, kids are kids.
They want to do well and they want to be
aggressive and come across. But somehow you've got to be
disciplined as a defensive lineman not to move until that
ball moves.

Speaker 1 (01:24:52):
Harding goes ahead and takes the time out. We'll go
ahead and keep it right here and Scott, I want
to throw it down to you real quick. There. There
isn't much discipline right now for Harding, at least on defense.
When it comes to jumping off sides.

Speaker 24 (01:25:08):
These are Mount Vernon is serving up body blues. Like
you mentioned, they're wearing a lot of half back off tackles.
But they are still even though I know you said
they're running to the left hand side.

Speaker 14 (01:25:18):
Take a while, guess what side Landon Adams on.

Speaker 24 (01:25:21):
He's on the opposite side, So they're still running away
from land and Adams.

Speaker 14 (01:25:25):
It just happens to be the other side. But you're right.
It's interesting.

Speaker 24 (01:25:31):
I know that there's been some injuries, some helmets come off,
we had a player get sick, so there's been some
rotations of second level guys, and so Vern's take advantage
of that.

Speaker 14 (01:25:42):
Justin long guy's helmet ripped off. So Mount Vern's take
advantage of that.

Speaker 24 (01:25:45):
And they're trying to soften up this line and they
will see if it pays dividends.

Speaker 14 (01:25:49):
In the second half.

Speaker 1 (01:25:51):
All right, thanks Scott.

Speaker 2 (01:25:52):
And right now, right now, they've got to take care
of the first half. It's two minutes and fourteen seconds
to go, and Mount Vernon has an off opportunity right
now to tie this thing up.

Speaker 1 (01:26:02):
First and ten at the Harding nineteen yard line. Taylor
up under center for the Yellow Jackets and hands it
off to the left side and now stack up right
at the Lion scrimmage that handoff to Gregory and still
got about three yards, so a good gain off of
a tough defense, but brings up second down. Yeah, and

(01:26:24):
they're not nanny hurry. They've got a minute fifty six
seconds to go.

Speaker 2 (01:26:27):
The clock's running, and they would like for nothing better
to happen than to score in the time run out
in the first half and tie this thing up. So
right now is Mount Vernon is knocking on the door.
They've had a substitution. Kuame Scott went in for a
couple plays and he's back out at number thirty two.
But back in Caden marks.

Speaker 1 (01:26:48):
Up under center Taylor and fakes the handoff, rolls right
wide open pass up ahead to Luke Mullins. Now he
gets away and able to be brought down at the
five yard line. That was just a little slip screen,
mistackle and a lot of mistackles. So it looks to

(01:27:09):
me that anything up the middle, Hardy's doing a pretty
good job of tackling to the outside. They've missed a
lot of tackles.

Speaker 2 (01:27:18):
Yeah, number forty five for Mount Vernon. He's a load
mallins coming out on the outside. They didn't put any
heights in weight, so I can't really tell you, but
he was definitely bigger than the two defensive backs that
came up. I thought he had him wrapped up, but
he just broke the tackle and picked up extra yard.

Speaker 1 (01:27:37):
He right now, Mount Vernon's knocking on the door. Fifty
three seconds left in the half, first and goal at
the seven. Now, hand off straight ahead to Stafford and
he about rolls in, gets down to the three yard line,
brings up second down for Mount Vernon inside the five. Yeah,
one of the things and a time out take and

(01:28:00):
by Mount Vernon.

Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
Well, I thought Harding was gonna call time out because
give their guys a blow, because right now they look
like they're huffing and puffing and somebody's got to come
up with a big play here.

Speaker 10 (01:28:11):
This.

Speaker 2 (01:28:11):
I'll tell you what this mentioned to you at the break.
This has really been a fun game so far to
do because both teams are moving the football, We've had
some good defensive plays. We're getting a little bit of
everything tonight.

Speaker 1 (01:28:21):
Yeah, it has been a lot of fun and both
teams you can tell, prepared very well for this game.
You know, Scott made made a very good point. They've
been running away from Landon Adams. Coach, I want to
ask you, at what point do you maybe he run
he lines up at defensive end, at what point do
you have him kind of stand in the middle of
the line until and kind of make mount Vernon have

(01:28:45):
to make a decision. No matter what, well, they're gonna
they're gonna run away from it. If they were a
smart team, they're gonna have an automatic to go away.
But you know, sometimes it's you know, a good player,
you can run, run, adding and maybe boot around him
because he's going to be aggressive from the backside. Those
are the kind of guys you like to boot around

(01:29:05):
or throw a screen on his side. But I don't.

Speaker 2 (01:29:08):
Think they can hide him because he's gonna line up
and they're gonna be able to go away from him wherever.

Speaker 1 (01:29:14):
They want and a false start there, just leaning forward
a little bit Maverick Gregory in the backfield. So that's
going to move him back from being at the three
yard line all the way back to the eight yard line,
so be second down in goal at the eighth.

Speaker 2 (01:29:29):
That was a little gift for Harding getting that five
yards back. That came in handy there with thirty eight
seconds to go, Harding up ten to three in a
second quarter right before the half. Here, if Harding could
come up with a big play and a goal line
stand here, I'll tell you what this could pay dividends
for them with the momentum.

Speaker 1 (01:29:49):
One wide receiver on the right side, but now confusion,
he goes to the left side, wishbone backfield and up
under center as Taylor.

Speaker 2 (01:30:01):
Do they dare try to throw a one on one
pass out there to the outside.

Speaker 1 (01:30:05):
Well, Luke covered good receiver out there. He did catch
a big slant earlier. There is a pretty big space.
But you've got one on one coverage out there with
is Josiah goodin and then you got Juju Glover right
there in that spot or in that space.

Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
So he's taken away that slant. Who knows he might
do a slant slant flag go back to the corner,
or they may just stay on the ground.

Speaker 1 (01:30:31):
They feel pretty good about that. So second down and
that's a handoff to Stafford. He tries to cut it
to the left side and he has tackled right away.
They've been relying on that cutback and it's worked a
few times for him. At that time, Hardy knew what
was coming.

Speaker 2 (01:30:45):
Yeah, I thought he was gonna bounce it to the outside,
but Lucas Keller had some pretty agility that time and
was able to get back to the outside. And now
there's a time out with thirty seconds to go. Third
night and real big play by Lucas Keller. There again,
a good crowd out here tonight. Early on it looked
like Mount Vernon didn't bring much of a crowd, but

(01:31:07):
I'm guessing they all went to dinner here and Marion
beforehand because they're they're representing well. And it's a pretty
packed press box here too. Lots of people trying to
cover this game. Course, we're the ones really covering it,
so that's all that matters. But it's a really fun
atmosphere here tonight. It's it's I mean, I just I

(01:31:28):
didn't realize how much I missed it until you get
here tonight and get to experience it. It's just like
riding a bike man. Once you get going, it just
comes back. But I'll tell you one of the comments
I was gonna make their dressed in road crew. Yeah,
they must have stopped out here to the rest stops
because they've been working on those two rest stops all
summer and picked up their orange and yellow or orange

(01:31:49):
and green vest. And their student section over there really
looks good. And they've got a lot of spirit tonight, and.

Speaker 1 (01:31:55):
Harding students section beach themed, lots of Hawaiian shirts and whatnot.
I mean, these are all the reasons you love high
school football. The bands, the students, the crowd. It's great
third and goal at the Harding eight yard lineup under
center Taylor once again wishbone backfield. Now he fakes the handoff,

(01:32:15):
goes back, throws it into the corner and oh wow,
they threw the flag. And I think the only reason
that was intended for lou coverd. The only reason I
can see them throwing that is Cameron Facts didn't turn around. Yeah,
but it was good coverage, good coverage and I think
it would have been a very difficult catch regardless of

(01:32:36):
whether or not he touched him. But Harding once again
and the quarterback that would be Taylor, he was kind
of falling back again instead of being able to step
up because Harding had put really good pressure. He kind
of rolled out here to the right and made it
look like a little bit of a throwback. Well, and
I think what he was doing there, which is smart play.

(01:32:58):
I hate it, but it's small. He knew he was
going to get sacked. He threw it up there to
get that pass interference, and he knew if he threw
it short it was going to cause the receiver to
have to come back the defenders there. That's just it's
a smart play for the quarterback, right.

Speaker 2 (01:33:14):
He knew he had the size advantage and the defensive back.
So you know, Steve Spurrier used to say, just throw
it something.

Speaker 1 (01:33:20):
It might happen. Third and goal at the four yard line,
hand off to Stafford and he is stopped in the backfield.
Now he dives forward but doesn't get to the end zone.
Justin Long just jumped in there.

Speaker 2 (01:33:34):
He grabbed a hold of his ankle and yell, come
on buddies, help me out here, and boy, I'll tell
you what. That was a great play by Justin Long
getting through there. And now with five seconds to go,
the clock's.

Speaker 1 (01:33:44):
Running down and they're taking the time out with three
seconds left. So I would have thought, maybe take the
time out earlier and maybe have a chance to run
two plays or run one more off defensive play. And
then I think I think they're going to kick it. Well, yeah,
I think they're going to kick. In fact, I see

(01:34:05):
Montoya out there, so I think they're going to kick it.
But I just you know, again, not why I'm hired.
That's why I'm not hired to coach. I would have expected,
maybe try to run one more play. You got one
time out, run one more play real quick, and then
take the time out and see if you can get
the points. But you know, second guessing is it is

(01:34:27):
what it is. Its hindsight is twenty twenty coach is
getting paid. Good play for a fake here, good time
for a fake. Eric. So from the right hash this
will be about a nineteen yard kick and so Montoya
lines it up and waiting with snap is Taylor kick

(01:34:55):
is up and that one is good. So to end
the first half, Montoya gives three more to Mount Vernon
and Harding's still on top, ten to six over Mount Vernon.
What do you think of this first half?

Speaker 2 (01:35:11):
Tell you what, like we said earlier, was fun to
do right here watching it and seeing these kids and
both teams are playing well, playing hard. A lot of
good offense, a lot of good defense. Should be a
great second half. If you're around the area and you
see the lights on here at Harding Stadium, hey pull
in and come watch these kids play. I tell you what,
they're doing a great job.

Speaker 1 (01:35:32):
So right now Harding making its way to the ends
or to the locker room. And that second half, really,
our second quarter really kind of went Mount Vernon's way.
Harding owned that first quarter and so right now Harding
hanging on to the lead, but Mount Vernon's starting to

(01:35:53):
answer a little bit. Really like the way Connor Pennington
is playing tonight at quarterback. He threw the one interception, but.

Speaker 2 (01:36:01):
He didn't lose his lose his cool and he's I know,
I saw coach down here talking to him a little
bit and it was all in a positive manner. Tell him, Hey,
you know, calm down, You're fine, You're good. Connor has
the temperament, though, I think that he just laid back anyway.
He's really smoothie s and finesse, and I'm looking for
him to have a good second half.

Speaker 1 (01:36:20):
All right, So we'll go ahead and take a break.
When we come back, we'll recap the scoring in the
first half again here at halftime at Harding, Harding on
top ten to six. You're listening to high school football

Harding three, Mount Vernon nothing. Then three twenty nine left
in the first period, Parker Davis on the nine yard

(01:45:25):
Harding was going maybe run away with this second quarter, though,
Mount Vernon was able to capitalize on some mistakes, some offsides,
penalties by Harding and an interception and able to get
back in this game. At the eight thirty seven Mark

put Mount Vernon on the board. Finally, Harding was up

(01:50:42):
And I always look forward to their performance because the
Harding band puts on a show.

Speaker 2 (01:50:50):
Yeah, no question. They always have something new to offer.
They have a lot of numbers, a lot of different things,
and they play with a lot of them yasm and
and they really take a lot of pride and uh,
you know, it's school goes and school goes how your
band and your football team are playing, and especially in

(01:51:11):
the beginning of the year, the first nine weeks. So
right now they've got looks like a lot of school
spirit with a lot of a lot of kids playing
both the football and in the band.

Speaker 1 (01:51:20):
So coach, we back for We're back for another season.
And we've done these quite a few years in a
row now, And I think anybody that's listened to us
before and knows I usually try to have some sort
of good question for you at halftime. I don't know
if this is a good one, but it's just something
that it kind of made me thinking, I'd never thought

(01:51:41):
of how this is handled. And with harding coming out
here with pretty much new uniforms, especially new helmets, new
logo on this helmet is really nice looking. It made
me start thinking, uh, you know, when you're a head coach,
what goes into that decision that it's time to get
new equipment and specifically new uniforms maybe new helmets, and

(01:52:06):
is it really is it something that's a lot of
thought has put into or is it something that's like, oh, well,
everything needs to be updated. Well.

Speaker 2 (01:52:13):
Coach Williamson came in last year, probably after everything was
already bought, and he didn't want to change anything.

Speaker 1 (01:52:22):
He was basically trying to learn it who his.

Speaker 2 (01:52:23):
Players are, and the uniforms were probably way down on
his list of important things to do. But since he's
been here over a year and he's had an opportunity,
he wants to put his mark on things, and he
wants to let the kids have an opportunity to go
ahead and say, hey, we're going to get this thing
turned around a little bit. So with a new look,
new helmets, he's given them some ownership, so they designed

(01:52:46):
the helmets and probably had some input, probably the seniors,
probably the team leaders.

Speaker 1 (01:52:53):
Had some input in that.

Speaker 2 (01:52:54):
And when the more things you can do like that
to give the kids ownership, the more they're going to
buy into it and give them an opportunity to go
out and see whether or not they can lead. And
I think that's kind of what it is. I remember, well,
Algin had red helmets for a while, we had white helmets,
and Coach Witter came in and we turned the helmets

(01:53:16):
silver in the silver bullets. So you know, it's just
it's kind of like a spark, it's and I think
that's kind of that's what goes into it. And when
the kids go, oh, hey, we got an opportunity to
have a say in something, then they start buying into
pretty much hopefully everything. And I think that's kind of
what you what you do as a coach. You kind
of have to read your players and see whether or

(01:53:37):
not they're going to take the bull by the horns
and do that.

Speaker 1 (01:53:39):
I remember back when when I was playing at Elgin
for you and for coach Witter. My freshman year, we
had new jerseys that were basically modeled after the original
or the old jerseys. They were just a different pattern
or different material. But I remember that that second year
when you took over, we he had just the regular

(01:54:02):
playing silver helmets, but you added the football the helmet stickers,
and that was such a big deal for all of us.
It's like, wow, we actually have something on our helmets now.

Speaker 2 (01:54:13):
And if you remember we, uh, you know, when I
was the assistant when assistant coach, I was in charge
of the weight room and the conditioning and that type
of thing, and we sort of adopted the comment with
the you know, the bodybuild comment showing strength. And I
think we actually put those on the jersey well, on
the awagers and the away jersey. You remember that, and

(01:54:35):
you kind of carry off carry on to the season
what you do in the in the off season, and
that's kind of what we tried to do.

Speaker 1 (01:54:44):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:54:44):
Uh, players are made in the off season, but teams
are made during the season, and so we want that
was our theme. And I remember one of the games.
We used to have a dedication to every every game,
you remember all of this, and they dedicated the one
game I remember still remember to the weight room because

(01:55:08):
they knew that that was a big part of the
program that helped win some games. So we knew that
we could get the kids in the weight room, get
them strong, get them quicker, prevent injury. They would buy
into it and that just does nothing but promote confidence
throughout the team.

Speaker 1 (01:55:25):
Well, and in every team we talked about with Harding,
they have this revenge Tour twenty twenty four and I
would imagine every team has a theme going into the season.
I remember we did, and that's something that it's those
little things that seems like that come sometimes can really

(01:55:47):
be that rallying point for a team. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:55:49):
I mean, you've got to have some reason to get
riled up and get ready to play. And it's not
always playing with pride. And sometimes you don't want to
kick a dog too much when they're down because they're
gonna come back and snap. Coach Williamson came on to
Marion last year, first year at Harding, first year and
maryon coaching at at the City. And when he went

(01:56:14):
around and did the tour first year, you know, he
found out that people weren't gonna really show too much
respect as far as you know, the score and that
type of thing, and it's up to you to hold
the score down. So I think coach Williamson has given
these kids, you know, hey, let's let's get some swagger
of our own and let's get going. And we should

(01:56:37):
be able to compete and play and win win our
share of the games if we do things right.

Speaker 1 (01:56:43):
And I think that's what's all about. I was at
the Harding Hall of Fame committee meeting on Tuesday. I
have the honor of being able to serve on that committee,
and found out a lot of really neat things right
now that Marion City Schools are doing. Sean Kerns, the
athlete director, has moved into a role where he's kind
of overseen all the athletics and in all of the schools.

(01:57:09):
And now you have an associate athletic director, you have
a new athletic director at the high school, you have
an associate athletic directors that are overseeing the middle school
and the elementary schools. And the whole goal is to
bring everything under a one continual process and to have
these teams more united in the community, more united. I

(01:57:30):
love what Harding is trying to do here.

Speaker 2 (01:57:32):
Well, you know, at the lower levels, especially in football
and even in basketball, where you have a certain system
that you're going to run, you know, offensively and defensively,
and if you have junior high or middle school coaches
coaching what they want to coach using their own terminology
because that's what they know. And then when those kids

(01:57:52):
get up into ninth grade, tenth grade, eleventh grade, it's
all relearning. What example would be the success Carry has
had in football over the years back in the eighties
and nineties especially, they ran the wishbone, and those kids
when they were in seventh grade, probably fourth, fifth and
sixth grade, started out running the wishbone, reading the option,
and by the time they got to be a sophomore,

(01:58:14):
freshman and sophomore, they were running at full scale and
full go. And as a defense, that's tough to stop
if you have people connecting on all stillars and right
to even today, I'm sure they've spread it out a
little bit, but they still use the same philosophy, especially
when you get guys coming back who have played in
that system, you know, in the two thousands, and they're

(01:58:36):
still coaching and they're going to still have a little
bit of that same philosophy and that's why they're a
winning program.

Speaker 1 (01:58:42):
All right, let's get some info from Scott Cameron Scott,
did you pick up anything there at halftime?

Speaker 24 (01:58:49):
Well, you know, I walked up and down the sidelines there.
Everyone seems real cool, collected and no injuries. Everything's fine.
I think Carting is ready to go. I think they're
going to come out focused and don't forget they get
the ball here to start second half, and I think
they're just gonna really rely on Pennington. And you know,
coach Kuzio kind of mentioned it, at what point does

(01:59:11):
ray J get the ball? You cannot not give an
athlete a ball like that. So interesting and see how they.

Speaker 14 (01:59:17):
Come on here in the second half.

Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
Yeah, I really like ray J to get the ball
in the second half. But I'll tell you who really
have liked in the first half is Parker Davis.

Speaker 1 (01:59:26):
They running him on the little sweep.

Speaker 2 (01:59:28):
They they're faking to him on the sweep, and then
we're rolling out and going away from that as a decoy,
and he's run.

Speaker 1 (01:59:35):
He's caught a couple of little passes.

Speaker 2 (01:59:37):
So I really like Davis, and really a couple of
the other guys are doing well too. They're catching the
ball when it's there and and so far Pennington has
put the ball there. He just can't put a lot
of pressure on himself. He just has to go out,
continue to perform, stay relaxed, and I think his teammates will.

Speaker 1 (01:59:53):
Rally around him. I would agree with that. And Pennington
did have a pretty good first half. We'll see if
he can continue here in the second half. So back
to kick is uh Montoya and ray J gets it
to ray J a up to the fifteen, across the

(02:00:14):
twenty to the twenty five and now to the thirty.
Nice return that was all the way taking all the
way back near the five yard line. So a good
return there by ray J Scott Harble.

Speaker 2 (02:00:25):
I'm telling you he knew how to take that hit
and the guy bounced off of his hip.

Speaker 1 (02:00:30):
And he is a what I say, he is a
load to bring down.

Speaker 2 (02:00:34):
He's deceptive when he's running, he glides and I'll tell
you what, They've got to get him the ball in
the second half, because I'll tell you what he could
be the difference between a win and loss tonight. First
down and ten for the Prexy's at their own thirty
thirty two yard line eleven fifty one in the third quarter,
harding up ten to six. So Pennington in the shotgun

(02:00:59):
with Harble in motion swing pass across to Parker and
he gets it up.

Speaker 1 (02:01:06):
I thought that was going to get knocked down, but
Parker Davis gathers it in and gets it up ahead
to about the thirty eight yard line, and there's a
nun self excuse me, forty two yard line. Yeah, and
Parker did a great job. But I'll tell you what,
there's an unselfish play there by a teamer, and that's
ray J coming out here on the outside throwing a

(02:01:26):
great block and Davis picking up some nice yardage off
of that block. Second down and five, Pennington in the
shotgun now pitches to the left to Harbolt and he
gets a head up across a forty and down at
right about the thirty eight yard line that is close
to a Matthew Hondaker. First down.

Speaker 2 (02:01:49):
Really liked a little option flip out there to the outside.
Pennington did a nice job of getting it to Harbolt.
And I'll tell you what. He come out there, and
he when he turned and turned his shoulders north and south,
he is hard to bring down Eric.

Speaker 1 (02:02:03):
Third down in one still in the shotgun, Pennington ray
J next to him to the right. Now he goes
a motion to the right and now Payton rolls to
his right.

Speaker 2 (02:02:14):
He's looking, looking, looking, throws it downfield and throws it
out of bound.

Speaker 1 (02:02:18):
Good good decision.

Speaker 2 (02:02:20):
I think he had a guy coming across early on
a drag, but he would have had to really set
his feet and I think he would have got clabbered
by the pressure.

Speaker 1 (02:02:30):
But nice job. But they've got a fourth down.

Speaker 2 (02:02:33):
Big decision by coach Williamson in the President's So.

Speaker 1 (02:02:37):
I think they're going to go for it. It looks
like they will. I mean it's less than a yard.
I think they were looking to maybe try to catch
Mount Vernon off guard there and thinking they were going
to run Mount Vernon did a good job on that.
Now it looks like they are setting up for the punts.

Speaker 2 (02:02:53):
Yeah, let's look and see whether or not they're gonna it.

Speaker 1 (02:02:57):
Looks like it could be. He's gonna give it to
handed it to Harbolt and he gets it up ahead
for the first down. They had ray J a back
to punt, which he's ray J is not even the punter. Yeah,
but they did get it across for the first down,
so didn't really necessarily trick anybody, but it gave him
the momentum to go forward get that first down. Right,
there's what We've run about four plays and he's carried

(02:03:20):
it three times, so once on the kickoff. Just he's
a guy, he's huffing and puffing, but you got to
keep giving him the ball. Yep. First and ten, Matthews
Hontacker first down at the Harding forty four yard line,
Painting hands to ray j to the left, up ahead
to the fifty and gets across to the Mount Vernon

(02:03:42):
forty six yard line, forty seven yard line.

Speaker 2 (02:03:45):
Somebody must have reminded the offensive coordinator about number two
in the second half, because right now they're gonna put
the ball on his back and carry this team. And
right now they're marching. They've got a little momentum offensively.

Speaker 1 (02:03:58):
Right up to the line of scrimmage. Second and two
at the Mount Vernon forty seven, Harbolt on the left
side of Pennington and he hands it off Harbold to
the right. He gets across the forty five, up to
the forty and down at the thirty six yard line,
thirty seven yard line. That's a Matthew Sondaker first down. Coach,

(02:04:19):
do you think that maybe they wanted to hold him
back a little bit in the first quarter, just so
that Mount Vernon wouldn't know what to expect here.

Speaker 2 (02:04:27):
Yeah, he's huffing and puffing right now. He's been the
work course to get the ball to where they are.
So they've got another running back in the game, and
we'll get his number.

Speaker 1 (02:04:35):
Here in session Fosnaw and he gets it up ahead.
Nice carry by Fosnaw to the thirty two yard line.
Fosnaw a transfer from Ridgdale.

Speaker 2 (02:04:46):
Yeah, he looked good on that particular play, first carry
of the season and picked up about six yards there
on first down. If they can get Mount Vernon's defensive
line huffing and puffing, which I think they are right now,
just take the ball methodically, march down the field and
put it in the end zone.

Speaker 1 (02:05:03):
Way. Mount Vernon's not really playing up real tight. They're
not bringing the linebackers up, so they're giving up a
good four or five yards already. Man in motion. That's
swung out to Davis. He gets the reception up, I
head to the.

Speaker 2 (02:05:17):
Thirty Now pass twenty five and out of bounds at
the twenty yards line, Parker Davis for another matthew soniaker
first down.

Speaker 1 (02:05:25):
This team is rolling on offense.

Speaker 2 (02:05:27):
Yeah, I'll tell you Davis and Harball and I'll tell
you what they're the guys.

Speaker 1 (02:05:31):
He got to get the ball.

Speaker 2 (02:05:32):
And I'm still gonna say the touch that Pennington has
on the football. He didn't throw it too hard, but
he threw it hard enough that he could make it.
His ball was easy to catch because it's right on
the money and it's really smooth. The kid is just
sitting back there and we set it in the first
quarter in like a rocking chair and taking this field down,

(02:05:52):
taking this team down the field.

Speaker 1 (02:05:54):
Three wide receivers, is to the right, one to the left,
Scott Harbolt in the backfield.

Speaker 2 (02:05:58):
Now throwback and just knock down. They rolled about three
steps to the right.

Speaker 1 (02:06:03):
And then he went to Pennington looked to the left
and one defender there was able to knock the ball down.
If it wasn't for that, probably a wide open reception. Yeah,
he did everything right except his delivery on the pass.
He kind of threw like a side arm.

Speaker 2 (02:06:17):
When you have that defensive end coming in on the outside,
you've got a loft it up over and I think
they would have a big play.

Speaker 1 (02:06:23):
But it was an incomplete pass. Nothing was hurt. Now
a swing pass now back and Pennington gets sacked. He
kind of now what I've noticed on the last sack
that he had, he kind of looked one way and
tried to go the other way this time, same thing.
So it's just those plays seem to be developing a

(02:06:43):
little bit too slow.

Speaker 2 (02:06:44):
Yeah, I wouldn't go away from running the football, even
in this situation. They've got a pretty good field goal kicker,
and just if they could pick up some decent yardage
and kick get some points out of this.

Speaker 1 (02:06:56):
Third and fifteen at the Mount vernon twenty six. Pennington
now walks up under center. Can't afford a sack right here.
He's talking to his offense now, a time out taken
by Harding, So coach coach saw something there he didn't like.

(02:07:18):
Looks like we got an update on the Elgins score.
Fourteen fourteen, four to go in the third. Comments have
come back, so Harding just not seeing something that they
liked right there and Pennington, you know, when they were
getting set up, he started seeing something and he went
up and told a couple of players. So I don't

(02:07:38):
know if he was changing the play. Coach told us
that they're wanting him to make decisions at the line
of scrimmage, So maybe they felt like he was switching
to something that maybe he shouldn't. Yeah, he's gonna learn
each and every game.

Speaker 2 (02:07:56):
It's just too bad he wasn't a junior instead of
a senior. And by the end in the season, he's
really going to be reading these defense as well. But
right here they can't afford a sack. They have an
opportunity if they could pick up maybe six eight ten yards,
get him down a little bit closer for a field goal,
or they could make a decision on whether or not

(02:08:18):
they're going to go for it on fourth down.

Speaker 1 (02:08:20):
Everybody to the right side now, Scott rolls right. Pennington
goes right way deep in the end zone. Caught just
shore the end zone, but a beautiful catch there by
Parker Davis lays out right there on the sideline, first
and goal for the Presidents.

Speaker 2 (02:08:37):
Parker Davis has come to play today, run the football,
and he's caught the football, and that was one of
the best catches you'll see all year diving. And he
has put Harding in a great position here first in
goal on a five yard.

Speaker 1 (02:08:52):
Line and you know what, Pennington, he laid that out there.
It was going to be Davis or nobody on that pass,
and he and Davis I give him a ton of
credit getting up there and Ryan under it. Now we've
got two backs, one on each side of Pennington and
Harbolt back behind him. Harbolt gets the handoff straight ahead,
almost breaks three free, but then gets stopped second down.

Speaker 2 (02:09:15):
Yeah, he's trying to ram it up in there with Harbalt.
I like him again. I like Davis on that end
around something bounced to the outside. If they can give
him a little bit of daylight. They've got some blocking
out there. Now, plays worked and Davis is really he's
kind of like an unsung hero, but he's the kind
of guy you need in that slot position. He's going

(02:09:37):
to be able to do a lot of things for
Harding this year. So Parker Davis comes back into the
game again. Three backs in the backfield, one on each
side of Paynton. Davis is the upback.

Speaker 1 (02:09:48):
Now motion, two backs on the left side of Paynton,
pitched to Davis. Now he tries to cut it outside
now up through to the five and taking out of
bounds at about the three. But that was a good
run by Davis, especially those last few yards. He was
carrying some guys.

Speaker 2 (02:10:07):
Yeah, they put two backs on that side, and now
they did was run a little toss sweep to the outside,
and I think that Davis does really well. He reads
his blocks and he turned the corner and cut up inside.
Now they've got a third and about seven third and goal,
and they've got an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (02:10:24):
Who do you go to, Harball Davis, Well, you can
do either one. I wonder if you have Pennington, maybe
take this one too. So three wide receivers to the right,
single wide on the left, ray J in the backfield
with Pennington. Pennington takes the hand off to Harbault and

(02:10:45):
he takes it into the end zone, touchdown, untouched.

Speaker 2 (02:10:48):
That was a great call going to the left side.
I think they were keeping their eye on Davis over
here on the right as a decoy and then just
gave the ball to Scott Harboldt just walked in the
end his own. Harding's up sixteen to six. Was six
thirty seven to go in the third quarter.

Speaker 1 (02:11:05):
So a three yard touchdown run for ray J Scott Harbolt.

Speaker 2 (02:11:12):
And he wanted to know how they were gonna come
out in the second half. Their assistant coaches got together
and said, hey, coach Williamson, we need to get the
ball to this young man Scott Harbault, and also keep
it going with Parker Davis. And that's exactly what they
did well.

Speaker 1 (02:11:32):
And I do think that, you know, he was still
relatively new to the position last week and so there
wasn't a lot of film on it, and I do
think it's one of those things where Mount Vernon didn't
have a lot of information on him, so they didn't
want to show too much. But yeah, you're right, going
into halftime, I would imagine the offensive coaches and probably

(02:11:54):
you know, the head coach was saying, Okay, now it's
time for us to use unleasham.

Speaker 2 (02:11:58):
You know, this kind of reminds me of a few
years ago when Grady Wink was a young player over
at Pleasant was his first start and he didn't really
throw long passes or anything like that, but he threw
little short passes and he commanded respect from his team
and they and he also performed and came through for him.
And the thing that impressed me with Pennington is he

(02:12:19):
didn't get his head down. He stayed true and he
kept running the offense. They run that little toss out
to the outside, and his passes has a lot they
have a lot of touch on.

Speaker 1 (02:12:29):
Even a screen passit. He through very good.

Speaker 2 (02:12:32):
It's hard to teach a young man about that, about
having a little bit of ainesse at the quarterback position.

Speaker 1 (02:12:37):
Ray J comes out a little injured there, Scott. Let
me throw it down to you. Did you see anything there?

Speaker 24 (02:12:43):
Yeah, ray J is just cramping up and he's a
little bit hurt, but he'll be all right.

Speaker 14 (02:12:49):
He just needs to get some gatorade.

Speaker 24 (02:12:50):
But you know that the turning point in that possession
as we're watching the extra point go up from Shipley
and it's good. Is that time out that Coach Williamson
took and you guys talking about it.

Speaker 14 (02:13:01):
Tonerman maybe going up to the line thinking too much.

Speaker 24 (02:13:04):
And Coach Williamson told me this week we want to
a Connor position where he doesn't have to overthink.

Speaker 14 (02:13:10):
He's just an athlete and he makes place.

Speaker 24 (02:13:12):
And you saw from that time out Coach Williamson came
out just kind of choosing people out a little bit,
got calm, talked about it, and from that point on
everything was smooth as silk, even with that great toss
to the on the outpass, everything was great. Everything that
timeout was a breaking point. That was a turning point
in that possision.

Speaker 1 (02:13:32):
Well, i'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (02:13:32):
Coach Williamson wants to be here and he wants to
teach these kids, and I think the kids have a
lot of trust.

Speaker 1 (02:13:37):
In him right now.

Speaker 2 (02:13:38):
This is I know, the first game this season, but
it looks like they are turning the corner.

Speaker 1 (02:13:42):
Eric, what do you think? I really agree. I can
see a big difference. And again, coach coach Williamson didn't
didn't get a full off season the year before. He
was really kind of putting a staff together and trying
to get their program. He told us on Wednesday how
happy he was to have a full off season to
build the program and build on what they had started.

(02:14:04):
And it really looks like it's made a big difference
this year. So Mount Vernon or excuse me, hard and
kicking off and there's a penalty flag. It looks like
an offsides buy harding, so we will rekick it. Are

(02:14:26):
you still getting score updates their coach? Yeah, it's still
fourteen fourteen. And mister Cunningham over there, Chad Cunningham, principal,
he's over at the game at Carlington. He always gives
me the scores and we like to see how they're doing.
But good to see him come back. By the way.

(02:14:46):
Next week we'll be at Elgin. Yep, we will be
at Elga. Will they be coming to Ralphie's this week? Yes,
Elgin and Ridgedale both coming to Ralphie's this week. House
Mark better be ready for the comments of rockets. Yeah. Mark,
Mark is actually pretty excited that they're all coming. Last
year they packed that house. But yeah, tune into the

(02:15:07):
football frenzy this Wednesday night, six o'clock on fourteen ninety WMRN.
We will have rich Dale and Elgin there. Live ball
goes out of the receiver's hands, return man's hands, but
he does gather it up, gets it up ahead to
the thirty five. But Hayden Higgins, I don't think he

(02:15:28):
should have even touched it.

Speaker 2 (02:15:30):
Well, I was going to go back to the promo
that we just did. How much was that a lead in?
Isn't what you call lead as a lead in?

Speaker 1 (02:15:36):
I gave you a lead in.

Speaker 2 (02:15:38):
I don't know much about this stuff, but I'll tell
you what I think. I nailed it on that lead in.
But no, right now, Mount Vernon down eleven and two,
score six twenty nine to go in a third quarter,
and it looks like Harding found a little bit of
offense that they know they can do. And let's see
if their defense got red in the halftime, got some

(02:16:04):
Gator eight in them, and let's see if their defensive
line can hold up throughout this third quarter.

Speaker 1 (02:16:09):
First and ten for the yellow Jackets, six twenty nine.
We're still leaning and still had another one. Yeah, defensive
offensive or defensive line that's just been off side.

Speaker 2 (02:16:23):
That's just fatigue and lack of concentration right there. Uh,
first first part of the third quarter for them being
out on the field and you just can't lean.

Speaker 1 (02:16:34):
You just have to watch the football. So it'll be
first down in five man in motion and running to
the left is Taylor and then he takes it back
to the right and gains about eight yards. Trying to
get a number there, looks like twenty four was in there.
Sebrel was there, number twenty four on the tackle six

(02:16:56):
to one to two hundred sophomore.

Speaker 2 (02:16:59):
He's got he's got the frame. He's going to be
filling out. It's gonna be a nice defensive end for him.

Speaker 1 (02:17:05):
So second down. In two quick score update third quarter,
Shelby up thirteen to six over Mansfield Madison. So Madison
giving Shelby quite a game in Ontario is down to
Lexington fourteen to six, two of the favorites in the
MOAC in some battles this week. So second down and

(02:17:28):
to a double reverse or double handoff there. So that
was a looked like a counter, almost like a double counter.

Speaker 2 (02:17:37):
I'll tell you there are always good plays, especially when
you have a defense that's really pursuing. It was enough
to pick up a first down. You only picked up
a couple, but that's all they needed.

Speaker 1 (02:17:50):
I mean, that was a play out at John Couzio's
playbook right there.

Speaker 2 (02:17:55):
You gotta run and reverse every once in a while,
you gotta run a screen, you got to throw one long.
So and we liked a lot of boot action, especially
with the running game.

Speaker 1 (02:18:03):
So just mix it up.

Speaker 2 (02:18:05):
And that's what Mount Vernon's trying to do here. Try
to get a little misdirection.

Speaker 1 (02:18:09):
Matthew Honda actor first down now a false start here
for Mount Vernon.

Speaker 2 (02:18:15):
Yeah, that's showing signs of fatigue on the offensive part.
And I mean it's a you know, warm evening, But
it's not like we've had, you know, early in the
season before.

Speaker 1 (02:18:29):
Yeah, it's definitely it's a comfortable evening. Now in the
press box, it's a little steamy just because there's so
many people in here. But yeah, I would imagine out
there in the stands it's it probably feels pretty good.

Speaker 2 (02:18:41):
Yeah, they're in short sleeves out here. What a night
for football. If you're still driving by five oh four
to go the clock running, Harding's up seventeen to six,
and to come out and support these guys, you probably
be able to just walk in the gate and watch
these guys finish this game.

Speaker 1 (02:18:57):
First down in fifteen, hand off to the right side,
that's to number twenty eight Gregory or Maverick Gregory. Maybe
about ju yard game brings up a second and long.

Speaker 2 (02:19:12):
Okay, this is a big series right here. This is
where Harding can really kind of get some great momentum.
They can get a stop here second and long and
get the ball back and go down and score. They
could get Mount Vernon reeling because they're gonna have to
come out of the running game.

Speaker 1 (02:19:33):
The thing that's surprising me right now with Mount Vernon
down by eleven they're taking a lot of time to
get these plays in. I wonder if they're doing that
just because they're getting a little worn out. Man in
motion left to right, Taylor rolls to his right. Now,
penalty flags all over the place. I don't know. Yeah,

(02:19:54):
it looks like you have no idea what that was.

Speaker 2 (02:19:56):
Keller Brothers and number twenty four was in there, and
that was is uh Sidette Sibrel Colton Sibrel from Harding.
And we're gonna see what the penalty is.

Speaker 1 (02:20:08):
It's a legal shift. Say let the play run. So
I would imagine Harding declines that penalty. Yep, it's fourth down.
That's a huge loss, right there, a loss of about
fifteen yards. We all know about ten yards.

Speaker 2 (02:20:23):
And that will make it difficult. Well, it's gonna be
or third down. It's third down. Yeah, it's gonna give
the defense some great field position Mount Vernon some terrible
field position compared to where they were.

Speaker 1 (02:20:41):
So now it's third and about I think twenty two.

Speaker 2 (02:20:51):
Third's that's more than seventeen.

Speaker 1 (02:20:54):
That's more than twenty three. Yeah, it's a long way.
So the ball is at the Mount Vernon thirty five
yard line, and.

Speaker 2 (02:21:03):
Watch that tight end. He got behind him early in
the game. Now safety is playing up in the box.
He's pretty shallow, isn't he. Yeah, looks like they're in
man coverage. There goes the defensive back, he's behind him.

Speaker 1 (02:21:18):
He's no man. There's a big deep playing up. Hoh
Man got lucky there because wide open that receiver.

Speaker 2 (02:21:28):
There's a yeah, there's a there's a perfect example of
a young kid not knowing the situation.

Speaker 10 (02:21:35):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:21:35):
The young man was trailing him across and instead of
going to where the receiver wanted to go, which was
gonna be deep, he cut across and then he had
to follow him and he was beat because the kid
was running full steam in motion. And if he if
he takes that quarterback takes just a little off, that's touchdown.

Speaker 1 (02:21:51):
So Mason Richards with the incompletion there, and like I said,
wide open, he had a good five steps on the
defensive back. Ball goes over the kicker's head. Now he
picks it up and has tackled after fourteen yard line.
So again, like Scott said, snaps.

Speaker 2 (02:22:12):
Are really rough here for Mount Verda planning Keller on
the tackle, he pursued that bon it's right now, Harding.

Speaker 1 (02:22:21):
Has got everything going for him.

Speaker 2 (02:22:23):
They can play loose now they get this one in.
They could just start rocking and rolling and playing loose
because Mount Vernon's going to be forced to throw the football.

Speaker 1 (02:22:32):
So the prexis have the ball first and ten. This
is there are at the Mount Vernon fifteen yard line.

Speaker 2 (02:22:42):
This has been a really good game for him because
they had a tight game early. They scored the first
ten points of the game and then Mount Vernon came
back on him and scored six. But they came out
in the second half, so it's showing them it was tight,
but they didn't lose their composure.

Speaker 1 (02:22:58):
Right now, they've got an opportunit unity diamond formation on
the right side. Now, man in motion. That's fas Naw
back to pass Pennington and across the middle, completes it
to the five, down to the four. That was a
completion to Dylan Holloway and again that slant and good
just good pinpoint accuracy there. He stepped into that throw

(02:23:19):
and it was going to be hard for anybody but
his receiver to catch it.

Speaker 2 (02:23:23):
And they're setting something up because that's about the third
time they ran that diamond formation and that ran the
man in motion, and they've always come to the diamond side,
but you watch it next time, they may possibly throw
a slant to the other side or a swing pass.

Speaker 1 (02:23:37):
Very good call. First and goal at the two yard line,
Payton gets a snap, fakes out to the right or left.
There's a catch hand oh, just down at the one.
It was a little bit of an out pattern. I
think that was the Parker Davis. He caught it with
his feet in the end zone, but the ball never
crossed the end zone. I'll tell you what you talk

(02:23:57):
about some touch. He threw that ball. That was a
bullet and there was about three defenders right there.

Speaker 2 (02:24:02):
He threaded the knee on that one because he had to,
and Parker Davis, what a great catch to set him
up for. Right, they're definitely knocking on the door here.

Speaker 1 (02:24:11):
Second and goal, inches from the goal line. Pennington hands
it to Harbolt and he dives in touchdown prexies Ray
J Scott Harbolt.

Speaker 2 (02:24:23):
Yeah, he rested that whole series and got it, went
and counted and stuck it in the end zone. But
manded Pennington thread the knee to on that one. Right
prior to that and Harding playing with a lot of confidence, right,
now on their home field.

Speaker 1 (02:24:39):
So that score with two twelve left in the third period,
second touchdown of the night for Ray J Scot Harbolt
and not a very long drive about four five plays
as the kick is up and the kick is good,
and only about fifteen fifteen yards on that drive. So

(02:25:05):
Harding extends their lead twenty four to six over Mount Vernon.

Speaker 1 (02:26:19):
Week back here at Harding High School, Harding on top
twenty four to six to eleven left in the third period,
kickoff by Harding, and that comes down at the sixteen
yard line, up ahead to the thirty and dragging the

(02:26:40):
defenders to the thirty five. Still going down at the
thirty eight yard line. That was number twenty three. That
was Carter Harris. So Carter Harris still here to play,
that's for sure. Right now, let's go down to Scott
on the sideline.

Speaker 14 (02:27:00):
Yeah, you know that. That score right there is all
about the line play.

Speaker 24 (02:27:04):
Honestly, Mount Vernon's defensive line standing around, look at each other,
hands on hips.

Speaker 14 (02:27:10):
The big thing that we have to watch for here
is Mount Vernon is.

Speaker 24 (02:27:14):
Gonna be doing a lot of tasting probably, and that's
that's not good for them because of that box seven
eight that Harding has, it's gonna put them in a
lot of bad spots. So you know they're gonna tend
their ears back. However, you got to look for Luke Coverard.
That's their long ball guy Mount Vernon's, and if you
start blitzing too much, you get too anxious, that opens

(02:27:34):
up in the back and we've already seen Harding dup
a couple of bullets from that long ball.

Speaker 1 (02:27:39):
It's a good point, Scott, and I would imagine right
now Mount Vernon has to find something that they can do.

Speaker 20 (02:27:47):
Well.

Speaker 2 (02:27:47):
It looks like they're spreading it out. They're gonna go
trips to the right, split twins to.

Speaker 1 (02:27:52):
The left, Taylor alone in the backfield waiting the snap,
he goes back to pass five step drop, and then
just confusion. Both the receivers out on that left side
were press coverage, but they they didn't even break off
their route. Yeah, number twenty for Harding.

Speaker 2 (02:28:12):
Jaden Griffin defensive back five ten one seventy five junior
did a really nice job. I pressed him to the
point where I thought he was gonna get called for holding,
but he did not do it. But we have a
player for harding down and it's way deep. Yeah, it
was way down the field. I didn't see what happened.

Speaker 1 (02:28:33):
Uh, but the whole team going back there. I think
it's a cramp because it looks like somebody's trying to
stretch out his leg.

Speaker 2 (02:28:43):
Yeah, Harbaugh was definitely limping a little bit earlier. And
uh so all the team is kneeling down on one knee. Yeah,
he just got his he just got his leg up
doing a stretch.

Speaker 1 (02:28:57):
It's just a cramp. Well, if if you've ever had
a cramp, it's never just a ramp.

Speaker 2 (02:29:02):
Well, someone up here in the press box says, it's
a very very serious injury.

Speaker 1 (02:29:07):
It is. It is if you have it.

Speaker 2 (02:29:10):
But uh, but the young man's gonna be okay, and
he just has to get some fluids in him because,
uh they've been doing a lot of running out there.
It looks like he's going to try The trainer has
his leg up in the air man doing a little
hurdle stretched there.

Speaker 1 (02:29:23):
And it's easy when you know this time of year,
and let's face it, we're talking about teenage boys. They
don't always hydrate themselves the way they should anyways, and
it's easy to say, yeah, gotta stay hydra, gotta stay hydra.
When you're in the game, it's probably the last thing
you're thinking about, right.

Speaker 2 (02:29:41):
You don't want to feel like you want to drink
a lot of water. But that's uh, that's what that's
twenty one. That's one of the Kellers. That's uh Landing Keller,
outside linebacker, six to one, one ninety five junior. He
grew a lot in the offseason and I tell you
he's been all over the play. He's probably put in
a few few miles tonight on that football field in

(02:30:03):
short spur.

Speaker 1 (02:30:04):
Did you see who's out there helping him off the field,
coach Chuck Williamson.

Speaker 2 (02:30:08):
Yeah, Yeah, he's Uh, he's definitely cares about the kids,
and he's out there making sure he's okay.

Speaker 1 (02:30:15):
And uh so they're probably gonna give him a little
bit of a break now. So second down and ten
one fifty five left in the third period, Harding up
twenty four to six Mount Vernon at their own thirty
nine yard line. Taylor back to pass, looking across the middle,
wide open, complete across the fifty up to the forty
thirty twenty five down at the twenty three yard line.

(02:30:38):
That was number thirteen. That's Darren Monaghan.

Speaker 2 (02:30:42):
Yeah, they caught him nap and number four touchdown saving tackle.
Josiah Goodin defensive back five to ten point eight five
Junior caught him from behind one forty four to go.

Speaker 1 (02:30:52):
Clock running in third quarter, Harding up twenty four to six.
Maybe the spark that the yellow Jackets needed. Matthew Actor
first down at the Harding twenty three yard line. Taylor,
one back next to him, steps back five step drop.
Now he rolls to his right looking looking looking, throws

(02:31:14):
it up and just throws it out of bounce.

Speaker 2 (02:31:15):
Excellent coverage by the Harding defensive back, pretty good pursuit.

Speaker 1 (02:31:19):
Didn't have anybody coming to that off of that side over.

Speaker 2 (02:31:23):
There to put pressure on him, so the quarterback was
able to get to the outside. He had nothing there,
so he threw it out of bounds. Good decision by
the young man from Mount Vernon. But stops the clock
at Harding has got to try to do everything they
can to shorten this game and keep that clock moving.

Speaker 1 (02:31:41):
It looked like they had levels going there. You had
a couple couple receivers short I think one mid range
too long but when you're rolling out to that far side,
I mean that sideline gets there quick. And you get
that many receivers, you're also getting that many defenders.

Speaker 2 (02:31:57):
Yeah, and I tell you they've got this number one
over here. He's got a mismatch on size.

Speaker 1 (02:32:03):
That's where they're looking. Throwing it into the corn of
the end zone and just out of the reach that
was intended for number five Mason Richards. He did have
a step on the defender, but just off his fingertips.

Speaker 2 (02:32:17):
Third down carry Williams was playing corner and they're in
man coverage. He was trailing in uh five ten one
seventy five senior from Harding and he got he was
kind of beat a little bit there, but the quarterback
threw a little bit too far and they dodged one there.

(02:32:38):
Harding defense, And you know, it's kind of the difference
from last season to this season. Last season, Harding did
a really good job of stopping that deep pass. They
had some great athletes on the second level. Now they've
really been able to rely on their pressure up front
and a little bit more inexperience in the defensive backfield.
Third down and ten at the Harding twenty three back

(02:32:59):
to pass Taylor.

Speaker 1 (02:33:00):
He swings it out wide open at number one. He's
got the first down, then down the sideline into the
end zone, touchdown Mount Vernon. And that is Luke covered.

Speaker 2 (02:33:10):
Real nice pass out there by Taylor to the outside,
just basically gave him the football.

Speaker 1 (02:33:17):
And let him do his work.

Speaker 2 (02:33:18):
Had some good blocks downfield and they got back there,
getting back into this with one zero four to go,
twenty four to twelve, and in the third quarter we
could have one heck of a fourth quarter. Looks like
they're going definitely going away from the running game and
they're going to have to air it out to keep
up with Harding.

Speaker 1 (02:33:35):
So Mount Vernon looking, I think they're looking to go
for two. So and there seems to be a ton
of confusion here. So that was about a twenty twenty

(02:33:59):
four yard touchdown reception by Luke Cupboard So going to
the right and throws into the back of the end
zone and that tight end got it for two. So
that was Roneker. So with one oh four left in

(02:34:20):
the third period, Harding is still up twenty four to fourteen.
What do you make of that drive, coach, I'll tell
you the show, And that they can still throw the football.
Harding's defense is getting a little tired being out there.
We saw one guy with cramps, that was Keller, and
their defensive backs inexperienced. We saw where they went in

(02:34:42):
motion and the young man trailed the receiver when he
was had full steam and he went down the field.
The pass would have been there would have been a
touchdown then, But they're inexperienced in the secondary. Showed up
on that series, Eric, So Harding really looked like they
were gonna run away with this here early in the

(02:35:04):
third period. But now Mount Vernon just not giving up
and getting it back within ten. But now you gotta
figure Mount Vernon does not want to kick it to
Ray J. Scott Harbolt.

Speaker 2 (02:35:19):
They may feel that they could get it back maybe
a little on side kick here.

Speaker 1 (02:35:25):
That's true, so it's easy to call that from up
here in the boots.

Speaker 2 (02:35:33):
Yeah, but you definitely don't want to give Harding the
football in the fifty yard line either.

Speaker 1 (02:35:37):
Montoya back to kick he gets it off. This one
goes back to Davis up across the twenty to the
twenty five, still going at the thirty. So two kickoff returns,
one by Harbolt, one by Davis, and both of them

(02:35:57):
pretty good returns.

Speaker 2 (02:35:58):
Yeah, they're setting up nice. We've seen in the past
where teams get hemmed in in their own inside the
ten yard line, fifteen yard line, and they've got to
go eighty five or ninety yards for anything to score.
But Harding's offense is sitting pretty good here. What about
the looks like thirty one yard line and all they

(02:36:19):
have to do is continue to run the offense. I
think they keep mount Vernon spread out, distribute the ball. Definitely,
Harbault should be getting it in Davis. Those two guys
and then any of the other guys are doing a
great job too.

Speaker 1 (02:36:34):
Pennington in the shotgun fakes it, throws it, swing past
to Davis up to the thirty and down at the
thirty six yard line. Nice game. And again those are
just long handoffs. Really. Yeah, and we talk about this
all the time.

Speaker 2 (02:36:52):
Last year, AJ and I talked about, you know, situation football.
Harding up thirty four seconds to go in the third quarter,
stay in bounds. This is where when you're up two scores. Okay,
Pennington's limping a little bit. Looks like he just got
a little twist at his ankle. But he looks like
he's running it off, but yeah, stay in bounds, and
Parker Davis did a great job of just doing that.

(02:37:14):
So the clock's running down, seventeen seconds to go. You're
gonna get one more play before the quarters.

Speaker 1 (02:37:19):
Davis takes it to the right side, up ahead, across
the forty to the forty three yard line, and that's
a Matthews Hondaker first down and.

Speaker 2 (02:37:32):
Number seventy six for Mount Vernon. Got to head his
helmet knocked off, and he was a little upset about that,
but he's got to go sit out one play, find
out where he lined up, and run right there because
he exactly a big kid.

Speaker 1 (02:37:48):
And the clock starts. I think Harding's just gonna let
it run out. As we reached the end of the
third period and Harding stays on top twenty four to
four fourteen over Mount Vernon. We'll go ahead and take
a break. When we come back, we'll have the start
of the fourth quarter again. Harding is up twenty four
to fourteen over Mount Vernon. You're listening to high school

(02:38:09):
football on fourteen ninety WMRN on A.

Speaker 36 (02:39:11):
The Matthews Honda Akurra High School Game of the Week.

Speaker 1 (02:39:19):
Back here at Harding High School. The star of the
fourth period Harding on Top twenty four to fourteen swing
passed by Pennington to the right set side and up
ahead to the forty five yard line. And that was

(02:39:42):
Janye fleming Harris with the reception.

Speaker 2 (02:39:45):
Distributing out to different guys right now, keeping the clock
moving eleven thirty six to go, Harding up twenty four
to fourteen. If you're just tuning in to us, if
you're in the neighborhood, stop in. This is going to
be a pretty good quarter, especially if Harding doesn't do
anything on this series.

Speaker 1 (02:40:02):
Second and seven for the prex, he's three wide on
the left, single slot on the right, one back in
the backfield. That's Harbolt swing pass out to the outside
and complete. And again that one was Twanye fleming Harris
up ahead for about two yards.

Speaker 2 (02:40:20):
It's like they go to a guy two three times
in a row. They work him awhile give the other
guys a break. There's Harding's the offensive staff or seeing
something here. The guy playing the inside position on him.
He's playing a little deep, playing a little soft. Harding
has a manageable third and five. I look for Parker
Davis to be involved in this play.

Speaker 1 (02:40:42):
Three wide up top, one down here, one back in
the backfield. Pennington rolls to his right. He's looking, looking,
looking now throws it back across an intercepted. Oh, such
a bad decision there, Oh man, do you really think
about it?

Speaker 2 (02:41:01):
Eric, It's easy for me to say the cardinal rule,
you don't throw it back towards the middle ever rolling
that way, and he threw a right to the linebacker
for Mount Vernon, and he's given them an opportunity. The
worst thing you could happen right there in that situation
was either a fumble or an interception. Given Mount Vernon

(02:41:24):
and all the great things that he has done, tonight,
he's gonna coach. He's gonna coach it. Continue to coach
him up because they need him, and he'll bounce back.
But boy, I'll tell you what that is costly.

Speaker 1 (02:41:37):
So it's first and ten at the Herding forty yard line,
Taylor in the shotgun for the Yellow Jackets, man in motion.
Now a false start. So that was number thirty three
Dakota Stafford. So that's go and bring it back five yards.

Speaker 2 (02:41:59):
That's another gift for Harding there to move him back
and ten twenty nine to go. The thing that Harney
has got to do is get this clock moving, get
the ball back at the clock moving, I say keep
it on the ground and try to get something going,
get the clock moving and control the game from there.

Speaker 1 (02:42:20):
First down in fifteen, man in motion goes back, ball
almost goes down on the ground now pressured and a
sack there's back of the forty five yard line. Justin
Long chased him down from behind. And that was a
big play number one.

Speaker 2 (02:42:39):
It was a sack and loss of yardis number two.
The clock keeps running. Justin Long kind of pulling and
kind of pulling on his toes, stretching his hamstring out.
These guys are really huffing and puffing. Looks like Keller's back.

Speaker 1 (02:42:53):
In the game.

Speaker 2 (02:42:54):
Number twenty one, and that's Landing Keller outside linebacker.

Speaker 1 (02:42:59):
They really need him in there. So second down and
about twenty twenty two to twenty twenty seven yards I
think twenty six yards to the first down back to pass.
Taylor slings it. Boy. Guy came out of his route

(02:43:22):
right away. The ball was there.

Speaker 2 (02:43:24):
That's a nice gain all the way up to the
harding thirty seven yard line.

Speaker 1 (02:43:31):
Yeah, this one is over. I'll tell you.

Speaker 2 (02:43:34):
That was a great throw and great run after the catch,
and clock's gonna be running, but there's way too much
time left for Harding to play down now twenty four
to fourteen.

Speaker 1 (02:43:46):
Well, Hubbard, Hubbard cut that off real quick, about fifteen
yards and the defensive back just got caught in his
back feet. He was still going backwards. Left him wide open.
Taylor back to pass, looking across the mill. Now up
the middle, completed five and down at the one. That

(02:44:09):
was Mason Richards. You talk about redemption for the quarterback Taylor.

Speaker 2 (02:44:15):
He stepped back right in the pocket and took a
hit as he threw it right down the middle.

Speaker 1 (02:44:21):
Really great throw there. Up to the Lion scrimmage, Taylor
is under goes up and I think he's in. There's
no yes, there's the signal touchdown. We got a ball game.

Speaker 2 (02:44:36):
Wow, we got a the ball game here in the
fourth quarter, eight thirty five to go, Parting's only up
twenty four to twenty and Mount Vernon has regained some
momentum here and they've got a barn burner over at Cardington.
Looks like Cartington's come back on the Comets. They're up
twenty six twenty two with one zero six left to

(02:44:58):
go in the game, So there's some good football being
played around in the area. So if you didn't go
to a game tonight, you can't get out there.

Speaker 1 (02:45:07):
Listen to us. We'll be at Elgin next week. So
the score twenty four to twenty eight, thirty five left
in the game, and it looks like they are going
to kick the extra point, make it a three point game.
Again the one yard touchdown run by Taylor, and again,
I you know, it was a bad mistake by Pennington,

(02:45:32):
but the kid is a is a competitor, and all
I have to do is is think back in Brett
Farr's last season, he took Minnesota to the NFC Championship game,
had a chance to drive them down for the winning
field goal, and on a rollout to his right, decided

(02:45:53):
to try to get you know, thread the needle across
the middle, throw across his body, and he threw an interception.
So even the best, you know, all star Hall of
Fame players, when they think they can make a play,
they'll probably try to do it as a fieldg or
extra point is good. Yeah, you know, and those kind
of plays that Connor made tonight, throwing the ball back.

(02:46:14):
If he would have been the quarterback, two year starter,
three year starter. Those are the kind of plays he
would have made as a sophomore. He would have got
it corrected by the time you're a senior. But he's
gonna have to learn and grow as the season progresses,
and if he makes a mistake, the team's got to
rally around him because they they've got they've got to
understand that he's going to grow and continue to work

(02:46:35):
hard and perform for them.

Speaker 2 (02:46:37):
You know, just like a pitcher throwing a home run
run ball, you can't give him that bok the look
because you could make an air on the very next play.

Speaker 1 (02:46:46):
And I looked at Coach Williamson when when Connor came
to the sideline, he came right over to coach and
Coach didn't It didn't look like he yelled at him.
I think he just kind of said, Okay, you you
need to make a better decision next time.

Speaker 2 (02:47:02):
Well, good coaches know how to read the room, You
read your players, and you got to know your players.
And that's what being here a couple of years is
going to do for him, is he's going to know
know how to handle each and every one of us.
Ray J Scott harboled up across the twenty five ball
comes out though, Uh oh, it's Mount Vernon ball boy.

(02:47:23):
If we had instant replay, we could uh we could
watch to see if.

Speaker 1 (02:47:29):
His knee wasn't down, But I don't know. I think
it was. Uh, I think it was a fumble and
it is still.

Speaker 2 (02:47:38):
Ray j was just trying to make a great play
on that kickoff return and he was trying to bust
it loose. And uh, this really could be interesting for Harding.
You know, they have a player down, might be ray
J J. Another looks like cramp in his leg.

Speaker 1 (02:47:58):
Man, that's just the way that this door has swung
both ways throughout this game is unbelievable. So Mount Vernon
will have the ball at the Harding twenty nine yard line,
eight twenty nine left in the game, only down by three. Hey,

(02:48:21):
there's so many storylines to go within this game and
there's no way to predict exactly how this is going
to go.

Speaker 2 (02:48:29):
Well, that's why high school football is so fun to
watch and interesting, especially for us up here telling everybody
what's happening.

Speaker 1 (02:48:39):
It's just up and down.

Speaker 2 (02:48:40):
Its ebbs and tides go back and forth, and these
kids are putting it out there. So hopefully the young
man's okay, he's getting he's kind of watching walking gingerly.
But boy, it's late in the game. Eight twenty nine
to go. Harding's up twenty four to twenty one. We're
gonna have an another whale of an eight and a

(02:49:01):
half minutes to go. Mount Vernon line up in a
spread again. Looks like they're gonna continue to keep it
in the air.

Speaker 1 (02:49:07):
Taylor in the backfield and shotgun with Gregory next to him.
Man in motion goes back, Richards slant underneath. That's complete
up ahead to the twenty five twenty and down to
the fifteen that was hovered again and that time good coverage,
but again miss tackles. Well, this is this is conditioning

(02:49:31):
right here.

Speaker 2 (02:49:32):
And when you play a scrimmage, you play, you know,
you probably play your number ones and number two's for
a half and they're subs, and you don't really play
a full game. And tonight these kids are having to
play a full game, and uh, they're gonna they're gonna
find out.

Speaker 1 (02:49:48):
Coach is probably gonna have.

Speaker 2 (02:49:50):
Them running a little bit more next week to get
ready for I think it's gonna be close to the
nineties a couple of days next week, so you gotta
be careful.

Speaker 1 (02:49:58):
Matthew Hontager first down back to asked Taylor back underneath
and now rolling to his riot. He throws it and
now there's a fight on the other side of the field,
and my goodness, there's going to be It looked like

(02:50:18):
there was tight coverage up top and they got tied up.
And now looks like number five Juju Glover, who was involved,
is coming off the field. But it got pretty intense
there and Harding, one of the Harding players pulled Juju out.

(02:50:41):
One of the referees fell down trying to grab him too.

Speaker 10 (02:50:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:50:45):
It was number twenty one for Mount Vernon Looney wide receiver,
so I would imagine I think they were rejected. Yeah,
and I think it's definitely offsetting. I will say this
on I saw the crossing pattern that Looney was running
and the coverage was real, real tight. I think it

(02:51:08):
was within the five yards, so you can get you
can get handsy there, and I think the Mount Vernon
player just did not appreciate that. You hate to see
that kind of a situation in anything.

Speaker 2 (02:51:23):
And I know coach Williamson has been preaching his guys
about keeping her composure and so on and so forth,
so we really don't know exactly what happened and what
it entailed.

Speaker 1 (02:51:34):
So Scott, let me get your thoughts on it. What
did you see down there?

Speaker 14 (02:51:39):
I'll tell you what I saw. Nothing.

Speaker 24 (02:51:44):
Honestly, I was tracking the play and I was watching
the wide out's feet and he didn't end up catching
the ball.

Speaker 14 (02:51:50):
Even if he would have caught it, it would have
been incomplete.

Speaker 24 (02:51:52):
Hsu was on the white and then I turned around
when I heard you say, and I saw him scrapping around,
But I did not see anything from manage.

Speaker 1 (02:52:00):
Bill was watching to play. Sorry, that's okay. I just
happen to see it going across there. There's definitely ejections
because the way that the referees are huddled here, they're
going through a lot of different scenarios, I think, and
you hate to see that, especially a game that is
this competitive. So we'll look to see what's going to

(02:52:24):
happen here. Referee's defensive holding number five. That means he's

(02:52:46):
gonna miss next week too, So number thirteen, which is
Darren Monahan, and I think he was kicked out too.
So yeah, and I thought there may it was in
that area. It could have been a defensive hold, but

(02:53:09):
I didn't see a flag right away, so I wasn't sure.
But now you know both players have to leave the field.
Well you hate to see that in any situation there.
So it's first and ten and it's at the Herding

(02:53:31):
fifteen yard line, and it's this is just really interesting
now seven to go twenty four to one. Harding and
Mountain Vernon after all of that is still knocking on

(02:53:52):
the door here, first and first and ten at the
fifteen or no, it's actually eight yards eight yards. Yeah,
it looks like he's moved. Oh, it's gonna be less. Yeah,
they had to mark it off. It's gonna be first
in about three yards. Wait a minute, Well it's inside
the ten now, so it's first and goal at the

(02:54:18):
eight yard line. Usually they dropped the change. Oh yeah,
well no, half the distance to the goal because there
they could still get first down. So first and three
quarterback draw.

Speaker 2 (02:54:32):
Taylor breaks through and just short of the end zone,
but just about gets in.

Speaker 1 (02:54:37):
Now it's the first and goal at the one and
quickly up to the lion of scrimmage up under centers
Taylor and Harding jumps off sides. Harding is imploding right now.
And this is this is what I've been wondering. This

(02:55:00):
is what haunted them so much last season is they
would have some games where they were they were pretty
well in control, and then there just seemed to be
an implosion at some point.

Speaker 2 (02:55:11):
Yeah, when things get a little tight here right now,
they can't do that. They've got whatever happens here after
this series. They've got to take the ball offensively and
march down and.

Speaker 1 (02:55:21):
And Taylor and take this put this game away. Taylor
dives in for the touchdown. That's the first lead of
the night for Mount Vernon at the seven to twenty
one mark of the fourth quarter, as Mount Vernon takes
the lead twenty seven to twenty four.

Speaker 2 (02:55:41):
Well, I'm seeing some good stuff down here on the sideline.
The offense is gathering up and they're going, hey, let's go,
let's get this thing together. And quarterback Pennington has got
to rally his offense around and and get it gone here.

Speaker 1 (02:55:57):
You got to shake it off.

Speaker 2 (02:55:58):
All that was a bunch of players that they should
be able to cancel out.

Speaker 1 (02:56:03):
In their minds. Oh boy, the kick is blocked, and
now Harding gets on it at the twenties, so that's
a big, huge block. Only a three point game here.
Mount Vernon on top twenty seven to twenty four, and
Harting's got a.

Speaker 2 (02:56:20):
Good field goal kicker if they get it down there
in that situation to tie it up. But I think
Harding's thinking touchdown here off the bat. Hard Ball's gonna
try to redeem himself after that fumble in the last kickoff.

Speaker 1 (02:56:34):
I would think Mount Vernon would try to keep it
away from him.

Speaker 2 (02:56:37):
Marek Well, I mean, good players usually redeem themselves they
do make a mistake. But you also could look at
it like, are we going to put the pressure on him?

Speaker 1 (02:56:48):
I would you and I have met the young man.
We wouldn't do that. But it'll be interesting to see
what they decide to do here. Now let's see, he's
not in. No, they have number three, Keyante Scott, and
they're saving him for this series. Is that number? Yeah,

(02:57:09):
it looks like five, Juju Glover, No, it's not five
four five. He's out of the game. Josiah goodin. Yeah,
So two fresh bodies out there on kickoff, they can.

Speaker 2 (02:57:20):
Get something going here and get it up to around
the forty yard line, some good field position.

Speaker 1 (02:57:25):
And that one into the end zone. He's bringing it out. Nope,
they won't let him bring it out. So Montoyo kicks
that into the end zone.

Speaker 2 (02:57:34):
Well, that's a valuable weapon to have the kicker to
be able to put it in the end zone.

Speaker 1 (02:57:38):
So they have to to go a long way here
in this series. Seven one to go.

Speaker 2 (02:57:43):
Car Harding has an opportunity here to come back and
either tired or take the lead down twenty four to
twenty seven. You got to give Mount Vernon credit. They
didn't panic. They got a couple big breaks. Harding lost
a couple of big breaks, fumbling an interception. That's been
the ballgame for Mount Vernon. They weren't able to really
move the ball until they had to start throwing it,

(02:58:05):
and then they were able to move it a couple
big pass plays, but boy, they took advantage of those turnovers.

Speaker 1 (02:58:11):
Seven to twenty one left Pennington swing pass out to
the flat up ahead across the thirty or excuse me,
the twenty down to the twenty one. I believe that
was Janie Fleming Harris. So about a second and eight.

Speaker 2 (02:58:28):
Yeah, really not much on that. I would see Parker
Davis here, and yes here you got to see him.

Speaker 1 (02:58:36):
I don't know. I mean, why you wouldn't go back
to some of those running plays. Yeah, you got plenty
of times.

Speaker 2 (02:58:41):
Yeah, Carbault is back there in the backfield with Pennington.

Speaker 1 (02:58:46):
Painington gets a snapped two step drop across the middle,
has Parker Davis complete fifty forty thirty twenty ten five
touch down.

Speaker 2 (02:58:57):
Prexy didn't I just say Parker Davis, you I mean,
it's not dreading surgery. Coach Williamson said, you know, we
got to go to the guy that's got us here.

Speaker 1 (02:59:08):
And he took it right down the middle.

Speaker 2 (02:59:10):
And I'll tell you, Pennington was the cool as a
cucumber right there, sitting in the pocket and through the ball.

Speaker 1 (02:59:16):
I thought he was just kind.

Speaker 2 (02:59:17):
Of so laid back on the sideline when all that
was happening. I'm thinking, man, this kid's got to get
a little emotional. But I'll tell you what, that's his style.
He stays over here, cool and calm, thinking about what
he's got to do, goes out there, sits back and
puts a ball right on the money to the guy
who's got him there. And I'll tell you what, what

(02:59:38):
a great play. And that brought higher Harding back up
thirty to twenty seven.

Speaker 1 (02:59:41):
Seventy five yard touchdown pass Pennington to Davis gives Harding
the lead right back and that's as the kick is
up and it is good. Makes the score thirty one
to twenty seven. If I'm mount Vernon, I mean you
got the lead feeling good? That is a gut punch.

Speaker 2 (03:00:05):
Yeah, that's a gut punch, just like the the interception
and also the fumble on the kickoff. But Harding came back,
they kept their composure. They end up winning this football game.
This is gonna pay dividends for coach Williamson and staff
to be able to talk about the ebbs and flows
of this ballgame. Wow, what a great play, great team

(03:00:26):
efforts so far with the offense coming right back to
scored thirty one up, thirty one twenty seven with six
thirty six to go. And if you aren't here, hopefully
you're listening to the game, because what a what a
great high school football game tonight. Well, and and you
look at that play. Davis was in the slot.

Speaker 1 (03:00:45):
Really he was in kind of a wide slot, and
you have to figure it was a zone coverage. He
comes on that little post, so nobody picked him up.
They were going after who was on the outside. He
got behind the linebackers and nobody there.

Speaker 2 (03:01:02):
I think what happened that the safety split and he
went right down between the split. And you know, that's
one of those plays where he's so wide open. A
quarterback would have a tendency to overthrow it because he
has so much time and the guy's wide open. But
he did not do that. He threw it there. And
you got to give Pennington credit. What a big catch.
I mean, he could have dropped it. I've seen him

(03:01:24):
drop it before. Yeah, not him, but other receivers when
you're wide open. He hauled it in. He's a gamer tonight.

Speaker 1 (03:01:30):
Well, and I love you mentioned it with Pennington able
to come back from that interception, come back from the fumble,
all of that, and he looked so calm out there.
I mean, you don't know what it's going to be
like for a new quarterback as Mount Vernon takes it
at their own five up across the twenty five to

(03:01:51):
the twenty six yard line, and that's where Mount Vernon
will take over first and ten.

Speaker 2 (03:01:55):
Yeah, the young kids on that kickoff team really here
joined himself and some of the guys thirty five.

Speaker 1 (03:02:04):
Let's see, we got to acknowledge him.

Speaker 2 (03:02:06):
Sean Kelly, he's a junior sixty six, was in there.
Oh man, He's got young guys Ethan Moore five, ten, sophomore.
They're just wanting to be out there under the lights
and making plays on the kickoff team.

Speaker 1 (03:02:23):
Three wide receivers to the near side of the field,
one up top, one back in the backfield. That's Stafford,
Taylor in the shotgun next to him. Stafford set up
to the left of Taylor. Now he takes it himself
to the right side and has stop for a gain
of about two second down. Interesting that Mount Vernon goes

(03:02:44):
to the run.

Speaker 2 (03:02:44):
Now, well, they've got a score a touchdown for the win.
Field goal's not going to do him any good here.
The thing that Harding's defensive backs and people on the outside,
they've got to make the receivers and running backs whoever
has the ball, keep the ball in bound to make
and tackle him to keep that clock from.

Speaker 1 (03:03:02):
Running man coverage by Harding on the outside.

Speaker 2 (03:03:04):
No defensive penalties be disciplined on this series. Watch the football,
do not jump, and I think I think Harding going
all man right here with their.

Speaker 1 (03:03:15):
Defensive backs snap comes back, Taylor going deep and a catch,
but it's out of bounds. I think they're.

Speaker 2 (03:03:27):
Calling for interference over there on that sideline. But great coverage.
From my vantage point was Cameron fags so life ten
one seventy five junior. What a great play.

Speaker 1 (03:03:42):
Ball intended for Luke Coverard, who's their big play guy.
Now he comes to this side of the field.

Speaker 2 (03:03:48):
See, they're trying to pick on these younger guys that
have starting for the first time in the secondary, hoping
that they make a mistake.

Speaker 1 (03:03:56):
Third down and eight Mount Vernon's twenty nine yard line.

Speaker 2 (03:04:01):
Harding's got their defense about safety about twe woh.

Speaker 1 (03:04:05):
He could get sacked back at the ten.

Speaker 2 (03:04:08):
They throw it up front and it's caught it the
thirty five yard line, across the grain to the forty
forty five fifty now across the forty cuts it back
to the thirty five.

Speaker 1 (03:04:20):
That was a reception to Hunter Looney, coach. I don't
know what to say about that.

Speaker 2 (03:04:29):
All I know is I was watching Landon Keller number
twenty one over here on this side. He tracked that
kid all the way across the field and when he
came back, that was a perfect pursuit drill and he
made a TD saving tackle over on that side. Wow,
what did good defensive play there. But that play was

(03:04:50):
like a disaster from Mount Vernon in the beginning, but
turned out to be probably the play of the game
the way going down and scoring.

Speaker 1 (03:04:56):
And I think I think both teams are really gassed.
Harding defense seems very gast to me. Scott, I want
to throw it to you real quick. Is that's your
opinion right now?

Speaker 2 (03:05:06):
Too?

Speaker 24 (03:05:07):
Well, it's pretty obvious that both teams are cramping up
heavy first week, right, So yeah, both teams appear to
be gassed. But Harding's defense has been really just kind
of putting bad spots here, and so yeah, they're playing
real hard trying to hold on that last play from
where I am, I was just looking right down the line.
Jerry Williams did a great job shutting out Hubbard. He

(03:05:28):
just kind of got picked off, not intentionally and twenty
one for Malt Vernon.

Speaker 14 (03:05:34):
He was just wide open.

Speaker 24 (03:05:35):
He got the right spot at the right time, and
all Maryon Harding's defenders were all in that spot and
they just they all got picked off and it just
was Nolan's fault. Is just a lucky play by Mount Vernon,
and they took advantage of it.

Speaker 14 (03:05:48):
Here they are.

Speaker 1 (03:05:50):
Thanks Scott first and ten at the Harding thirty five
yard line, five oh seven left in this game. Harding
up thirty one to twenty seven, and Harding jumps off
sides again. I mean, if if they lose, this is

(03:06:10):
one of those things they'll point to. If they win,
coaches are going to say, we won in spite of that.

Speaker 2 (03:06:17):
Yeah, that's no question. Yeah, that has nothing to do
with the ability. No, no, you know, coach will say, coach,
you know they have so much ability out there. It's
just that one one thing in particular right now defensively
and teams, are you going to watch this film and say, hey,

(03:06:37):
defensive line, you can pull them off side when you
need to.

Speaker 1 (03:06:40):
Taylor to the left side. He gets tackled right away,
but still gets about three, no four yards. Oh, there's
a fubble. Harding ends up with the ball. Oh my goodness,
that was taken away by Josiah Gooden.

Speaker 2 (03:06:55):
It's about time they got a break. I thought it
was like a rugby scrum over there, and they were
all together and all of a sudden, the ball pops
out and uh, Josiah Gooden come up with at five
ten point eighty five, Junior, And what a break that
Hardy made for himself there.

Speaker 1 (03:07:13):
Now they've got.

Speaker 2 (03:07:14):
To do is keep the ball on the ground and
get that clock moving.

Speaker 1 (03:07:18):
This four fifty seven is a lifetime for Hardy. I
looked up at the.

Speaker 2 (03:07:22):
Clock when Mount Vernon had the ball and it said
five oh seven. I said, Ben, this clock is not
moving at all. Scott, did you see the play?

Speaker 14 (03:07:31):
Yeah, they just ripped out of his hands.

Speaker 24 (03:07:33):
But a couple of the players stopped because they even
will to the Sishlum said, you blew the whistle, So
I think some of the Mount Vernon players saw it.

Speaker 14 (03:07:39):
He was downer as someone blew the whistle, and they
just ripped he right out of his hands.

Speaker 1 (03:07:44):
It's interesting, we won't know if that's what happened. First
and ten there Parker Davis with a shovel pass on
the sweep and a nice run.

Speaker 2 (03:07:54):
And I like that play because since it is a
shovel pass, if he drops the ball to an incomplete pass,
so they're getting the ball to the gamers and that's
Parker Davis, and you've got to keep the ball in
his hands, give the ball in his hands, and I
would almost even.

Speaker 1 (03:08:09):
Run like a quarterback draw with Pennington.

Speaker 2 (03:08:12):
With these guys that have the football need to keep
two hands on the football because Mount Vernon is going
to try to rip their ball.

Speaker 1 (03:08:19):
Right out of their hands. Three wide receivers on the
near side, one up top, one back in the backfield.
That's Harbolt, and Pennington, taking his time, gets the snap,
pitches out to Harbolt. He gets it up across the
thirty five. Boy almost for a second there it looked

(03:08:40):
like he fumbled. I think they just were ripping at
the ball, but he did keep a hold of it.
Makes a third down.

Speaker 2 (03:08:46):
Yeah, And here's where you wish you had the field
clock running working so that the quarterback and the coaches
over here can see when to snap the ball, because
you don't want to snap it too early. So hopefully
the official is telling them how much time. And it
looks like they're taking their time here.

Speaker 1 (03:09:05):
Three thirty eight, third and three, hand off to Harbolt
and he breaks it through across the forty and that's
a matthew Son after first down. And he got that
on his own.

Speaker 2 (03:09:16):
On that after he got through five yards, he put
a shot on their linebacker lowered his shoulder and he's
trying to make up for his fumble, and I'll tell
you what, what a shot he's feeling it. Man, He's
coming through there and nobody's touching him on that left side.
And I want to make a shout out here to
the offensive line. We haven't talked too much about him.

(03:09:37):
There's only been a couple sacks.

Speaker 1 (03:09:39):
They've given good protection and they've opened some holes for
the Prexies.

Speaker 2 (03:09:44):
Boy, when you can get everybody on the same page,
it's beautiful to watch.

Speaker 1 (03:09:50):
So Matthew's honed after a first down first and ten
at the Harding forty two yard line, Prexy's with the
ball Pennington on the delayed handoff to Harbolt, he cuts
a back roust the forty five down to the fifty.
And that was one of those where I think a
little bit of a delayed draw and it was supposed

(03:10:10):
to go the left side and he cut it back
to the right real quick and found a lane.

Speaker 2 (03:10:15):
Yeah, he was kind of upset with himself that he
didn't break it because the guy made a shoe string tackle.
But I'll tell you, in that situation, he's got to
be just happy getting what he can and didn't go
out of bounds, didn't go out of bounds and keeping
two hands on the football, and he's going to break one,
but it's not necessarily important that he breaks one.

Speaker 1 (03:10:32):
With two minutes and twenty seconds to go in the
clock running second down into Pennyton fakes the pass and
takes it up ahead and I think he's just a
little short of the first down will be third and inches.

Speaker 2 (03:10:45):
Well, I'll tell you, I like the call. He's the
only one that carry had a hand on it. How
old of it on that particular play. And it's going
to be you almost wish it was. It's gonna be
third and about. Oh, they had him down it. No,
I was gonna say that.

Speaker 1 (03:11:01):
I don't know if it's short, but it's it's about
one yard third and one.

Speaker 2 (03:11:09):
Well, it's I think it's a little less, but it
doesn't matter. The clock's running, and that's what they need
to take care of, is that clock. Take care of
the football number one, and let the clock keep running.

Speaker 1 (03:11:21):
And some of these players coming in cheering for each other.
I love this, just camaraderie between this harding team.

Speaker 2 (03:11:29):
Yeah, they're in trips to the left that they're not
doing anything but running the.

Speaker 1 (03:11:32):
Football here, hand off to Harbolton. He don't break away.
Now they're saying they whistled it dead and he got
the first down. Yeah, just don't do anything anything, any
spin moves. Just hold on the football and go down.

Speaker 2 (03:11:50):
They're going to try to strip it from your hands
and that should do it.

Speaker 1 (03:11:54):
With one for to go, yeah, Mark, Mount Vernon has
all three of their timeouts, but I don't know that
that's going to matter so Harding first and ten at
the Mount Vernon forty seven yard line, Pennington, taking his time,

(03:12:15):
gets it, hands off to Harbolt, cuts it to the
outside stand bounds. All he got pushed out of bounds.
Had a flag though, so that's a late hit. And
I think from where we're at what it looked like
to me, Harbolt was trying not to go out of

(03:12:36):
bounds and he was just getting pushed. But obviously he
was out of bounds when he got hit and taken down.
So one fourteen left in the game. Unsportsmanlike.

Speaker 2 (03:12:54):
Yeah, in this situation, Harbad's gonna understand that the most
important thing is to take care of the football, stay
in bounds and sometimes on second and third efforts, Eric
that's when things hat could happen badly. But it looks
like Harding's gonna make really take advantage of this. They
got a big penalty against Mount Vernon one fourteen to go.

(03:13:16):
They're in the driver's seat and this is great to
learn how to finish a football game. Up for first
and ten at the Mount Vernon twenty eight yard line,
a handoff to Harbolt, he goes to the left side
and just gets stopped and is taken down maybe a
gain of one.

Speaker 1 (03:13:32):
Good job on that time.

Speaker 2 (03:13:33):
He had both fans on the ball, three four guys
trying to strip it. Young Man's put it on the
line for his team all night, play different positions and
they're going to be sleeping good tonight. Mount Vernon takes
the time out.

Speaker 1 (03:13:48):
I want to remind everybody that we have the scoreboard
show after our game, Racelin Graver Alec Bikleman in the studio.
We'll recap everything. You'll notice i'd he did not say
Coach aj Pratt. I want to let everyone know Coach
Pratt is back to coaching tonight. He's at Belle Fountain.

(03:14:09):
He's one of the offensive coaches for the number one
quarterback in the State in Ohio State signee Tavian is
it Saint Bryant kind of envious that he gets to
see him up close, but we're happy. Obviously, our loss

(03:14:30):
at the station is Belle Fountain's gain because Coach Pratt
knows more than I think I'll ever know about football,
and he's just a great guy and we'll miss having
him around, but we're very happy for him. Okay, he
looks like looks like trying to figure out. Okay, he's

(03:14:56):
gonna be second nine.

Speaker 2 (03:14:59):
On the twenty eight one to eleven to go harding
up thirty one to twenty seven. These guys are going
to learn how to finish a football game.

Speaker 1 (03:15:09):
There is Parker Davis takes it to the outside, now
brings it back up the middle, stays in the middle
of the field and actually breaks a few tackles and
gets down to the twenty one yard line and kept
the ball in bounds.

Speaker 2 (03:15:21):
I'll tell you if Parker Davis makes something out of nothing,
and they had some nice blocks, they were still mating
their defensive men.

Speaker 1 (03:15:30):
But I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (03:15:31):
He has good vision, he has quick feet, he's so
far holding onto the football. I like the shovel pass
because if the ball is released in the air, it's
actually a forward pass, yep. And if he drops it,
it's incomplete. The thing you don't want to do, though,
is stop the clock. But there's one oh one to go.
Mount Vernon called time out, parting as in the driver's seat.

Speaker 1 (03:15:55):
But it's not over. Anything can happen.

Speaker 2 (03:15:58):
So they've got to take care of the football right here,
and they've got to understand that Mount Vernon is going
to try to strip the ball and do everything they
can and get it back.

Speaker 1 (03:16:07):
I want to remind everybody too. Right after the final whistle,
we will name the Hiller Credit Union Player of the game.
Scott will get an interview with the Player of the game. Also,
we're hoping to have an interview with Harding head coach
Chuck Williamson after the game. But gott to finish it
up right here. One oh one left in this game,

(03:16:31):
third down and two, only one time out left for
Mount Vernon. Pennington taking his time waiting for that snap.
He gets it, hands off to Harbolt and he gets
it up ahead and I think he's got the first down.
The Matthews Hondaker first down. We'll see. I think they

(03:16:51):
may have to measure, are they well, they guys want
to say. They were pointing to Harding for the time out,
but down they turned around and said, Mount Vernon.

Speaker 2 (03:17:02):
I think that's it, the high go victory formation. Three
plays in a row here, fo.

Speaker 1 (03:17:08):
I mean they have not signaled first down, but the
yard marker looks like it is at the first down.
If not, now they're saying fourth down, so fourth and short.
I think they're going to measure it. So I want
to throw it down to Scott right now. Scott, you've
been down on the field the whole game. Tell us
a little bit about the atmosphere you've seen tonight. You

(03:17:30):
are a longtime teacher in this district. You've been to
plenty of games. What has the atmosphere been here tonight?
From your vantage point, I.

Speaker 24 (03:17:40):
Tell you what a roller coaster of emotions is an understatement.
You know, everyone was riding high. You know, everyone felt
good controlling the game. That end of the third quarter,
beginning of the fourth quarter, it was pretty tense. It
was that feeling of anxiety, that feeling that I've been
here many.

Speaker 14 (03:17:58):
Times where, like you said, Harding has.

Speaker 24 (03:18:00):
Been in control of the game and then something happens
and he just implode.

Speaker 14 (03:18:04):
But they just they stepped through him.

Speaker 36 (03:18:07):
Man.

Speaker 14 (03:18:07):
They just kept pushing, kept pushing, and they fought for
each other.

Speaker 24 (03:18:11):
And Parker Davis man Superman coming out of the phone
booths on that seamro and just everyone's happy again.

Speaker 14 (03:18:19):
Everyone's happy again.

Speaker 1 (03:18:21):
There's no doubt about it. Scott and we love seeing
this year. Fourth and inches three backs in the backfield.
Hand off to Scott or excuse me, rach A and
he gets the first down and that will do it.
Forty five seconds left, Matthews Hondakra first down and that's

(03:18:44):
the biggest one of the game. Got got a injured guy.
I think it's another hammy, another crap one other line man,
I think it's uh, let's see, who is it?

Speaker 2 (03:18:59):
Seventy that's Ricky Johnson, Yeah, sixty. Junior did a whale
of a job tonight. The whole offensive line stuck with it,
gave Connor Pennington an opportunity to get the ball released.
And uh, I'll tell you it's been one heck of
a great turnaround for Harding. It's all about attitude still,

(03:19:23):
It's all about attitude and trust, and I think coach
Williamson has got it rolling.

Speaker 1 (03:19:27):
In the right direction. Yeah, I'm very impressed, and Scott
mentioned it, We've talked about it. The past few years
have been quite a roller coaster for the Prexies. Uh,
and you feel for the students, you feel for the team.

Speaker 10 (03:19:42):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (03:19:42):
They've had to deal with the players have had to
deal with things that were completely out of their control,
and that's not always fair. But you look at what
they're doing now, you look at the community that they're building,
and you've said it before, school's always a lot more
fun when the football team's doing well. And it looks
like this is a team that not only the school

(03:20:03):
can be proud of, but also after this game maybe
should get the attention of everybody in the league a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:20:10):
Yeah, there's no question they're definitely going to get the
attention in the league. I think there's some teams that
are up and coming, and we'll have to wait and
see how things are and out with the scores tonight,
but I think they don't really get into the league
play until maybe two weeks. Two weeks so they have
a couple non conference so we really can't tell how

(03:20:32):
harding is. They definitely have a great start to the
season and they took victory formation and the clock's running
with thirty seconds to go, and this one's over pretty
much yep.

Speaker 1 (03:20:44):
So Connor Pennington gets his first victory as the Harding
quarterback and it looks like Parting the Revenge Tour Game one.
The revenge has.

Speaker 2 (03:20:58):
Been made right here as the Harding Prexies win this
game thirty one to twenty seven over Mount Vernon.

Speaker 1 (03:21:09):
And I can't remember for us, at least a first
game of the season that has been this much fun.

Speaker 2 (03:21:16):
Yeah, I tell you when you don't, you know, we
were rooting for Harding pretty much. You know, we always
root for the home team, especially if it's the MOAC
the county schools, but we really we got to know
some of the kids on Wednesday night and co we've
known coach Joe Williamson. I worked with Kyle Kern, who's
a defensive coordinator. Sam Nickelosi defensive coach for Harding. His

(03:21:41):
two grandsons, Kellers, are playing and while what an opportunity
for him to coach his grandsons. And they're also standout
players of probably great young men. So these guys have
really put it together. And my hat always goes out
to the coaches and the players who work so hard
in the off season and work so hard in the

(03:22:03):
season when people aren't believers, they are the only ones
in the room that really need to believe.

Speaker 1 (03:22:08):
And I think tonight they believed. They absolutely believed, and
it's it really is. I know it's only the first
game of the season. This is a different team than
what we saw last year. There's no doubt about it.
There is a lot of discipline now. Obviously the off
side and stuff that I think had a lot to
do with eagerness and just being tired too, But overall

(03:22:31):
the discipline showed by this team was very impressive tonight.

Speaker 2 (03:22:36):
Well, when you make those kind of mental mistakes and
you're jumping off sides several times, but you win the
football game. In spite of that, the coaches, defensive coaches
can really bark at the players and the kids will
accept it because you won the football game. If they
would have lost the football game, you got to handle
it in a little different way because their psyche is

(03:22:58):
a little bit fragile. Right now, Harding's feeling good. The
thing they've got to do is they've got to keep
him crowd. They've got to encourage him to make sure
they're getting their schoolwork done, they're doing the right things
when they're away from the team, and they've got to
you know, continue to on that way. Is that the
revenge tour? Yeah, you've got to continue on the revenge

(03:23:19):
tour of twenty twenty four and knock off somebody else
next week.

Speaker 1 (03:23:26):
So again, the final score here at Harding Harding thirty
one Mount Vernon twenty seven. The team is huddled in
the end zone. We've kind of between the three of us,
we agree on who the player of the game is,
the pillar creating and player of the game. So as
soon as Scott gets a chance to talk to that player,

(03:23:48):
that's what he's going to do. But there's a lot
of players for Harding tonight that could have been the
player of the game. You look at Connor Pennington. We
don't have any of the official status yets, but I
imagine his numbers other than you know, a couple of interceptions,
his numbers were pretty stellar. His completion percentage had to

(03:24:11):
be pretty high, there's no doubt about it. And coach,
did you what did you think of Connor Pennington tonight
first start at quarterback? Well, you know his temperament.

Speaker 2 (03:24:26):
And I've known him for I knew him when he
was over at Tri Rivers in our class, and he's
kind of a laid back kid and sometimes you act
like he acts like he's not really taking it serious.
But sometimes that can take really come into play in
a tight situation. And today he kept as cool and
that's what he was, cool as a cucumber. And the

(03:24:48):
thing that I was impressed was the type of passes
that he had to throw. He didn't sling him. He
was a passer, and he knew when to zip it,
and he knew when he could throw it from but
not overthrow it. And he kept his composure. And even
after he made a couple of mistakes, I guarantee you
the coach Williamson will get that corrected and he will

(03:25:10):
accept the coaching and he'll bounce back next week and
he'll continue to grow and get better.

Speaker 1 (03:25:15):
Okay, let's throw it down to Scott. He has coach
Williamson right now.

Speaker 24 (03:25:20):
Coach, I know, revenge tours kind of the mantra.

Speaker 1 (03:25:23):
Of this year.

Speaker 24 (03:25:24):
It's been a couple of years since we've beat Mount Vernon.

Speaker 14 (03:25:28):
Kind of been some tough years. How's this one feel?
Whose absolutely awesome.

Speaker 42 (03:25:32):
Our kids fought.

Speaker 10 (03:25:33):
We talked about our pregame speak.

Speaker 42 (03:25:35):
Lone survivor and Marcus Patrol being gritty when he was shot.
Shot all up and he's scrolling tree to tree, and
that's what we talked about. We knew this game was
going to be tree to tree and that's the way
we fought it out.

Speaker 24 (03:25:48):
You know, we talked about uh at the beginning of
the broadcast, we're talking about the great things they're American about,
great things that are just blue collar America, you know,
apple pie, first day of baseball season and opening night
of high school football, and it's only as good as
Pope Ben.

Speaker 14 (03:26:05):
You're want to know that work still exists. Why know
want to know, Coach, I want to know. We're so
proud of these kids.

Speaker 42 (03:26:12):
You know, they started this SAW season in December, just
working their tails off, get stronger, getting faster.

Speaker 10 (03:26:19):
I couldn't be more proudable.

Speaker 14 (03:26:20):
Thanks, Coach. I'm gonna I'm gonna try and get Parker
back to you.

Speaker 11 (03:26:23):
Eric.

Speaker 1 (03:26:24):
All right, So coach Chuck Williamson and I noticed right
there too, he wants his players to celebrate the right
way too. They were after he talked to him in
the end zone. They all came running over here, some
of them doing backflips. They were going down the field
and Mount Vernon's at the other end of the field

(03:26:45):
and he was standing with Scott and he was telling
he was yelling at his players, Hey, get to the sideline,
get over there. He's teaching them everything win with class, right,
but you can be happy. Make sure you win with class.

Speaker 2 (03:26:59):
Yeah, he's he's telling him that, But he also has
a little note card with some things that he's definitely
gonna cover this week. And you watch and see the
thing they can do is have a let down. You know,
they can celebrate tonight and get back to work on
Monday and focus on the next one so they can
go to and zero and put this one away. So

(03:27:20):
Coach Williamson, my hat I tip off to him and
this coaching staff.

Speaker 1 (03:27:25):
Well what a great way to start.

Speaker 2 (03:27:27):
And you know it, just any time anything good like
this happens in Marion County, especially in Marion City around
here and gets the school off to a great start,
is nothing but good.

Speaker 1 (03:27:36):
All right, let's go back down to Scott with our
Pillar Credit Union Player of the Game, Parker Davis.

Speaker 24 (03:27:42):
Yeah, Pillar Credit Union Player of the game, Parker Davis,
I don't have many stats in front of me.

Speaker 14 (03:27:48):
I don't think I need stats. What were you doing tonight?

Speaker 10 (03:27:50):
What was good?

Speaker 14 (03:27:51):
You were a man with your head on fire. You know.

Speaker 43 (03:27:53):
We just came out and, like I said, Coach put
in a great game plan for us, and all we
did all week was focus on doing the little things
right and trusting each other. And we did that the
whole game and we came out on top.

Speaker 14 (03:28:04):
And I know there's a game.

Speaker 24 (03:28:05):
There's always a game inside of the game, right, all
competitors know the game inside the game. I know there's
a little bit of a back and forth between these
two schools. They have been playing each other for seems
like almost a decade now. First game, have it. They've
had your number the last couple of years. There's some
well some uh social media jowin between the two schools.
But you came through it and you were able to

(03:28:25):
do that. How does that help your team come together
and just realize you're fighting as a unit. You know.

Speaker 43 (03:28:31):
I think it's just the idea that we all have
the same going mind, and that's to do better than
we did last year and try to rebuild the culture here.

Speaker 1 (03:28:37):
At Marion Harding.

Speaker 14 (03:28:38):
Soach Williamson has really put it.

Speaker 43 (03:28:40):
In our head that they can give us the best
game plan they want, but it comes down to us
coming out and executing every day. So that starts Monday
at practice, and for next week, we're gonna start tomorrow.
We're gonna watch film, break it down, and then come
back and get ready to work.

Speaker 14 (03:28:54):
Fantastic. Hey, thank you for leading solid on field, sawed
in the huddle. Nuts job young man. Back to you, Eric.

Speaker 1 (03:29:01):
All Right, Parker Davis the Pillar Credit Union player of
the game, first game of the season, and like we said,
we didn't have any stats, but I think everything that
you're going to see tonight, and especially if you get
to watch a replay this game or listen to a
replay of it, you can tell this game kind of

(03:29:21):
revolved around what he was doing out there on the field.

Speaker 13 (03:29:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:29:25):
I think he was the guy I had the most
confidence in the beginning of the game every time he
touched the ball, and we talked about him making holes,
making plays when he didn't have the blocks. And he's
got to keep the same focus as he's got right now,
figure out what has made him successful to this point,

(03:29:46):
continue to do that because I think the team is
going to look for him for some more leadership as
they go. Plus here's the other thing. The teams are
going to scout him now now they have some have
some stats on him. They're going to have some stats
on Connor Pennington. So it's not going to be easy
the rest of the way either.

Speaker 1 (03:30:04):
No, but I think this coaching staff will get them
ready and these players are ready for the challenge. To
any final thoughts, coach.

Speaker 2 (03:30:11):
No, I just I'm glad that you know, Marion Harding
had a lot of fans out here tonight. If they
didn't come out, hopefully they listened to us and hopefully
enjoyed themselves and keep our minds focused on things that
are going on here this fall.

Speaker 1 (03:30:25):
Into Marion County.

Speaker 2 (03:30:26):
And if you get an opportunity, we're going to be
over at Elgon next week and we're looking forward to
that matchup. And also them and Ridgedale will be at
Ralfie's on Wednesday night. Come and see us and uh
manager Mark full Well, we'll really treat you right over there.

Speaker 1 (03:30:44):
All right. Well, thanks for joining us tonight here at Hardy.
Next week, the Mount vern Mount Vernon Yellowjackets will be
hosting Newark, while Harding will play host to Ashland in
the annual Eerie Bell Game. We will be at Elgin. Elgin,
as coach said as the comments, host Ridgdale and a
Marion County matchup. Now stick around for the scoreboard show
Racelin Graber and Alec Bickleman. We'll cover all the areas

(03:31:06):
games plus talk about the latest in college and pro football.
We'll join the conversation when we get there again. The
final score tonight, Harding thirty one Mount vernon twenty seven.
So for Coach Kuzio and Scott Cameron here with me
and Raceland back at the station, we say so long
and we hope you have a wonderful weekend. Good night everyone,
Those showers and thunderstorm chances are coming.

Speaker 36 (03:31:27):
This it's the iHeartRadio high school football Game.

Speaker 1 (03:31:31):
Of the weeks.

Speaker 36 (03:31:31):
