Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me in studio today. I've got Guy and Linda
Schlichting and they are here today for the first Presbyterian
Churches Veterans Concert. They're going to be honoring those who
served on Sunday, November two at four o'clock. And guys,
welcome to the studio. How you doing today?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good? Great, we're doing great. Thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
I really appreciate you guys being here. And we've talked
about this event every single year. First of all, it's
hard to believe that November is a week or so away.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Oh kidding, I'm not ready. It's also hard to believe
this will be our fifteenth annual, fifteenth time we come
here to the radio station every year to do this.
So this is an annual thing.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
For us, and I'm so glad that we can all
meet here and do that. It makes it so much
more fun to be able to do this. So, guys,
tell us about the event. The Veterans Concert is coming
up Sunday, November two, four o'clock at church. Talk about it.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Okay, Well, this year we're freaturing the Marion Area Orchestra MAO,
directed by George Shram we call him Chairman MAOMO and
Lynda and I and our daughter are all members of
the orchestra, so we'll be performing and we have a
few numbers. Jeff Ruth our old buddy. He's going to
(01:10):
be the MC again. He's been our MC every year
except last year. He had to go to Africa for
some reason last year, but he lined up a sub
for us and that worked out. Good god boy. And
we're going to have an honor guard. Doug Brown from
the Ohio Veterans Retirement Home is going to be there.
This whole thing is to sponsor or support the Ohio
(01:35):
Veterans Retirement Home and.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Then honor our local vets we want we of course,
we always have a moment where they're acknowledged individually because
we think that's very important.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Agreed, Agreed, And we'll talk for a few minutes about
the home and some of the things that you're doing.
But let's kind of get through everything going on at
the event. First.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Okay, we're going to have Jerry Hopkins. He likes country music,
so we're going to do Letters from Home with a
song he's going to sing, and oh, we you know,
the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Wed Hoff will be singing the national A.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah, she's going to sing for us. There will be
an organist will lead the congregation in a hymn, and
we have a substitute pastor who's going to do the
invocation and benediction. And afterwards there's sandwiches, coffee.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Punch, cookies and punch and hang out.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
And put some loving on our vets.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Absolutely, and that is what it's all about. It's a
thank you Veterans event Sunday, November two, four o'clock at
First Presbyterian Church And of course everyone is welcome and
they certainly would love for every veteran in the area
to be able to be in attendance. And one of
the things that you guys do is you collect personal
items for the Veterans Home in Sandusky. And I think
(03:00):
a lot of people know that it's there and know
a little bit about it, but I don't think they
know exactly what it is. And why you guys collect
all of the things for the Veterans.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Home was started because there were Civil War veterans needing help,
and so they petitioned Ohio and we put together the
home in Sandusky, and there's also one in Georgetown and
it's believe it's four hundred and twenty seven bed nursing facility,
so I believe it's a facility like if they just
(03:31):
need outpatient help, they can stay there and they have that,
but there's also facility for dementia and alzheimer and things
like that too, so they it's income based, so it's
whatever the veteran can afford, and then it's supplemented. And
so they have a lot of needs that you know,
(03:53):
their money only goes so far, right, and these days
it doesn't go very far run, so we like to
help that out. And this year they particularly are requesting sunglasses,
new hats, comforters for men, comforter sets for men, and
alarm clocks. I thought the alarm clocks were very interesting,
but you know, older veterans probably not into cell phones
(04:17):
all of that stuff. And this year though, they are
not accepting used clothing, hand sanitizers, blankets, socks, or books.
We've donated donated those things in the past and they
are not accepting those items. So just wanted to make
that clear. Also, if you would rather just send a check,
(04:38):
you can make it out to First Presbyterian Church, Marion
and then in the memo put veterans and then we
collect all that and send it up to Sindsky what
they can use. So they're still needing things like I said, sunglasses,
new hats, comforter sets and alarm clocks. But they can
always use handling oceans, so toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream. And
(05:07):
remember we have women up there too, so you can
get underwear different sizes for women. For men, sweatshirts they
like large to five XL when it comes to shirts
and sweatshirts and sweatpants, hoodies, gloves, pajamas, robes.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
It says belts size thirty six and larger and suspenders
and they like slippers too.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, body wash, Q tips toenail clippers, things that we
take for granted at home. You know, they would have
to spend their money on, and there's other issues that
they probably need to spend their money on. So it's
fun to help them out with us.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
The least we can do to thank them for the
sacrifices they made to defend our country.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Absolutely right. It is the Veterans Concert honoring those who
serve Sunday November two, four o'clock at First Pressian Church
on South Prospect Street here in Marion, and I know
the refreshments come courtesy of Kingston of Marion and Captain Hendrix,
the chapter NSDAR in the Northwest District and the Presbyterian
Church ladies. But you wanted to kind of highlight a
(06:16):
little bit about the things that Kingston does for you.
I know.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Yes, we're excited to announce they're having a Veterans Expo
on November twelfth from one to four pm and they'll
have door prizes and giveaways and like appetizers, and since
they sponsor our sandwiches, we want to make sure we
sponsor them back for little bit of information.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
I think that's going to be at their location.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I believe it is.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yep, yep, I got that. I got that in the
email the other day myself, and yes, it is going
to be at Kingston itself.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
So November twelfth from one to four pm. Absolutely, veterans
come to First Presbyterian Church on November second and get
recognized and then you can go on the twelfth at
Kingston and we just want to honor you all month
so appreciate everything you've done for the rest of us.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
And I know you're also going to be announcing Margie
Saw's event that she's been doing for a number of
years and her and I tend to chat every year
in May about it. It is the basically it's Honor
Flight at home here and Mary, and it's a neat
event that they do the first Saturday of June the
last few years.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yes, some of our veterans are not able to do
the honor flight and take the flight to DC to
see their monuments, which we have taken River Valley years ago,
did the Marching Band, took the vets. It's great and
it's just impressive to see the veterans see their own memorials.
So some of them can go, but if you can't go,
(07:44):
we still want to have at home on our flight,
so we want to recognize you at home, and that
is Sunday, June sixth at Trive Rivers And you will
probably need to get a hold of Margie yep about that,
but I know you'll be talking about it. But we
want to promote other events for our veterans, not just ours.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Absolutely, and you get more details of that when you
go to the Veterans Concert honoring those who serve Sunday,
November two, four o'clock at First Presbyterian Church. Once again, guys,
thanks for coming in. What a great deal. Anything else
you wanted to drop in about the Veterans Concert and
things you've got going on.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Well, we appreciate. This is our fifteenth year and the
reason we have MAO is because ten years ago we
needed entertainment and guy contacted mister Shram and he's like,
you know, I always wanted to put an orchestra together.
So that's how MAO got it start was through our
Veterans Concert. So we're kind of proud of that too.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
I love that it'll be a wonderful day. And like
I said, if you are hearing this as a podcast
or maybe on the air, remember that it is on
our podcast channel on the iHeart app and you can
certainly share it with folks so that they can learn
more about it. And there's some details up there with
that post as well, so you can learn all about
the Veterans Concert honoring those who serve Sunday, November two,
(09:06):
four o'clock at First Presbyterian Church, one forty three South
Prospect Street here in Marion, and we would love to
see you.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Across from the parking lot, it's the Old Stone Church
if you.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
And it is absolutely beautiful. And it seems almost every
year on backstage at the Popcorn Festival and one of
the artists will look in and go that church over
there is just absolutely beautiful, and I go, it's a
beautiful backdrop for a wonderful event that we do here.
So thank you guys, thanks for coming in today, thanks
for inting, and.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Thank you veterans for all that you've done. So we
want to honor you, so come on out.
