Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight. Each week we hear
from one local business owner letting us know where they
are in their business journey and how they got there.
I'm here today with Mackie Cronin, CEO of About Faces
Day Spa and Salon. Hey, thanks for being here, Mackie.
I appreciate it. So much of us have heard about
your company, but you tell us about About Faces Day

(00:20):
Spa and Salon.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Go ahead, Yeah, well, thanks for having me Bob about
Face's Day Spon Salon. We've been a trusted name and
beauty and wellness for fifty five years.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
So we have four locations and we take a full
service approach. Our two hundred and fifty people are definitely
the best in the business, and we specialize in skincare
and hair massages, nails, makeup, waxing, and even lashes, so
we clearly do it all. I'll picture this. A lot
of our clients pay for themselves in the spa for

(00:50):
a few hours, then they head over to the nailed apartment,
maybe for a dazzled drive pedicure, then enjoy a luxury
hair service and a blowout, and the town looking their
best and clearly, it's a fun business to be in
when you can do that.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
I'll bet I say that. I swear to you this
is one hundred percent truth, and I'm sure a lot
of people listening can say the same thing. I bought many,
many gift cards for my wife from about face. I
thinks very much and she loves it there. It's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
It's a great option keep them happy, right.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah, right, I mean, you know it's not every single one,
but you know, maybe every other holiday or whatever. And
she loves it.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
She does well, so thank you.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
What is the most popular service people go to to
get their things done? There? Well?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Right now after COVID, there's been a ton of focus
on wellness, so we see a lot of growth in
our massage and facials and skincare anything in the spat apartment,
we're seeing a lot of growth there. Hair has been
around forever, as you can imagine, but there's always new
ideas and new styles that we're kind of keeping up with,
so it's across the board. We're adding new things to nails,
like dazzledry, which means it just dries in less than

(01:59):
five minute so you can be off and on your way.
So I'd say there's a lot of new things that
we're doing that's been pretty attracted to our clients and popular.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
I guess around this time of year for you know,
weddings and stuff, bridle services, right.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, we do it all bridle services for sure. So
you got to look your best on the.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Big day, right absolutely? And what about you? How did
you get your start with about Face's Day spon Salon.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
So actually it's a sad story. My good friend from
high school, Eric Brennan, was running his family business and
sadly he got sick and passed away in twenty twenty two.
Though obviously a really hard time for the company, it
was obviously in the middle of COVID as well, so
the leadership team really rise up to the occasion. And

(02:44):
now fast forward two years later. It's January twenty twenty
four and I saw Eric's dad in church, Patrick, and
I approached him. I said, hey, you know, good to
see you again. I'm so sorry, and I said, let's
go get lunch. I had recently sold my business and
was looking for to buy a great business. And I
looked at them and thought maybe they'd be open to

(03:06):
a conversation. So I approached them and the rest is history,
and they entrusted me with their business and transitioned ownership
in September of twenty four So it's been a beautiful
partnership and relationship ever since. So I couldn't be more
happy about it. So what are the you know, the outcome.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
For me at least, Yeah, absolutely, congratulations on that.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
That's very thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Sad about how it happened, what led up to it
and everything, But what are some of the things I'm
just curious did you change that was not happening before
you took ownership? Did you expand on anything at some products,
at some services?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, definitely. So the good news is it's a great
business already and so every day we just get to
come in and focus on making it even better. And
I'd say our two main initiatives that were really focused
on are just being the employer of choice for the
sponslaon industry. We have a ton of team members that
have been with us for over thirty years, so that
says a lot about our call sure and then number two,

(04:01):
it's all about the customer, right, the customer experience. So
we're doing everything from improving our spaces, adding new service
offerings like like luminfusion and derma planing and the spa.
We're doing stretching and hot stones, so you name it.
We're just making sure we're staying up the speed on
new on new initiatives and giving our clients what they want.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yeah, my wife loves the body massages there. That's great.
Now looking into the future, what do you what do
you see in the future with about faces a des
Bon Salon.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I think when you come in, you're going to continue
to expect that good service, but it's even going to
be better. So we're doing a lot of training with
our with our staff on how to make that customer
experience the best. Right, think of like a really high
end hotel, like the way you feel, the way it sounds,
the way it smells, the way people greet you. So
I think the experience is really number one. And then
we're just going to give you great ideas to to

(04:53):
look your best and feel your best. So I think
it's you know, there's there's tons of things we're doing,
but I think if you can think of from that perspective,
that's what we're focused on.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
I think you guys are the best at what you
do especially my wife says so as a matter of fact,
So Tals and Timonium, Pikesville and Salisbury, right.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
You got it. Yeah for locations, so we were all
over Maryland.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah, and you sell products there too, you can, you know,
if somebody is happy about it.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
We have all kinds of retail options, so as you
come in and get your service, when you leave, one
of our stylists or providers will walk you up and
make suggestions that are unique to whether you have a
unique type of hair or a specific skincare condition that
you're trying to solve for. We have very unique options
for everybody, so definitely stop into one of our locations.
You'll see some really great names that you can't find

(05:41):
anywhere else.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
If that was a customer at one of these places
to get a massage, to get something you know that
the nails or the hair or whatever, what is something
that would surprise me that you guys do there and offer,
they'd be like, oh, I didn't know this was here.
At about faces.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yes, we're about to launch gel x, which is like
in acrylic nail with out the drills and the smell
and the dust. So show up is a great option
for nails. I'd say lumin infusion is a brand new
It's almost like a medspot treatment in our skincare line
that people love. So it leaves your face kind of
glowing and takes off a lot of the old dead skin.

(06:18):
So those are two new services that we're offering. And
the Dazzle dry in the nails is also great because again,
it tries so fast, people can move on and it
lasts and you don't have to get it drilled off.
It's soaks off. So it's a healthy way to take
care of your nails.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
I mean, that's totally cool. Now you're going to get
a lot of customers on that one, I think yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
And Bob, it's all about the glosstreatment too. You've got
to have shiny hair these days, so we can take
care of that as well.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Absolutely, I have none, but I'm going to pass that along,
so don't worry about that. Listen, Preakness is coming up.
How are you guys involved in Preakness.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
So we're celebrating fifty five years in business and Preakness
is one hundred and fifty years. So it's all about
local businesses and events and supporting each other. Preakness is
a great event that we've all had a lot of
fun going to over the years, and we make people
look and feel fantastic. So it's a natural partnership between
two great Baltimore traditions really, and we are selling tickets

(07:13):
in our stores. There's going to be a giveaway for
folks in our stores as well. And I personally get
to kind of hang out with all the local companies
at the Preakness on May seventeen. So I couldn't be
more excited about it.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
It's going to be a lot of fun, very cool,
and so you'll be there. Do you go to Preakness
every year?

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Do you like that? Oh? I love it. It's great.
It's such it's a good way to kind of kick
off summer and getting in the right mood. And it's
a ton of fun, right, such.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
A great bull into it. Such a great Baltimore local
thing to do or Maryland thing to do. Actually, it's
so cool. Yeah, just the sure before we get people
to where they need to go to find out more
about your company. Is there anything else you want to
say about about Faces that I might have missed?

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Yeah, I would say just come come check us out.
We've been around for a while, but we're growing and
we're really looking for other great team members to join us.
We're expanding, we're offering a ton of service, and then
really it's all about the people and our team. So
if anyone out there is listening, we'd love to talk
to you. Come join our team and we can have
a great career together.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
I've spent a lot of time on about faces dayspa
dot com. Where else can they go to find out more?

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah? Sure so Instagram, Facebook, you can go there to
get a feel. Our websites loaded with information on different
types of treatments we do. But I'd say between those
three you're in great luck. Check us out online on
some of our Google reviews, probably more than anyone out there.
We're doing great and we can't wait to see anyone
that wants to give us a try. My wife will
be there to all of our loyal customers. Yeah, thank

(08:37):
your wife.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yes, that's great, all right, Yes, loyal customers. He definitely
thanks you, and my wife will be there too. Maggie Cronin,
CEO of About Faces Day Spa and Salon, thank you
so much for your time and giving us a thank you,
Bob kind of an overview of the company and the
business and man, I have a.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Great day you too, Thanks so much.
