Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week, we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I'm here today with Gregory Vetter,
founder and CEO of Alta Fresh Foods. Welcome, thanks for
being here. I tell us a little bit about Alta
Fresh Foods.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yep. So we basically provide custom fresh food for retailers
and schools, Like we're providing all the schools in the
country the opportunity to basically get salad bars in all
the schools in the country, and so we ship them
all of the ingredients for that, and we also eliminate
(00:43):
food waste in the process so that they're not wasting
anything that they're not using. So that is how Alta
Fresh Foods came to be in existence.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Oh okay, what a wild history though. That's a great idea.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
I mean, the response has been amazing. People like eating
fresh food that tastes good and they don't like eating
old food that doesn't taste good. So it's been working
well for us.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Now, did it start as because you do deliver to
customers as well, and then It started as salads, but
I think you have expanded to other meals, is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
So we initially were going to big box retailers like
Sam's Club, and that is where all of our fresh
food solutions were going, were to retailers.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
And where do you get your foods? What makes all
to fresh foods so special?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
It's just the freshest. So our headquarters is out of California,
so we literally are harvesting in the field. And then
what makes us special is just our our ability to
innovate and create solutions for people that nobody else can do.
So really we're just like a produce innovation hub. Is
(01:56):
what makes us special.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
We'll give me another example of some of the so
besides the school one which is fantastic, a.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Chicken caesar salad for a family of for in a
grocery store, some sort of wrap like a wrap sandwich
that you would get in a grocery store. And again,
what makes us special is that we create these interesting
(02:24):
recipes and that we're able to eliminate food waste in
the process and make everything more efficient for the retailer
so that we're helping them save money in the process.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Retailers like what give me some of the names of
the places.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Kroger so around here it would be Harris Teeter, Whole Foods,
HGB and Texas FAM's Club Costco retailers like that.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
So tell me the beginnings of Alta Freshman. Who did
you come up with this idea and what was the
concept in the beginning and how it's grown? Explain that
to me.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
We were trying to sell salad dressing. So it originally
started through Tessie May's. We were trying to sell salad
dressing and people said, well, we're not going to put
this amazing salad dressing on a crappy salad, so why
don't you also come up with the salad And we said, yeah,
of course we can figure that out, okay, And so
we partnered with some growers out in California to come
(03:27):
up with a salad that could feed basically all of
North America. And that is how we began that journey.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Wow, very neat. And how long has been How long
has the company been around? When did this start?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
About eight years?
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Okay, fantastic and it's just growing and growing. And how
did you get your start with Altera Fresh Foods. I
know you're an entrepreneur in other businesses. How long you've
been at this?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yep, so I ended up. I started it and then
I bought it from the previous company that owned it.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Very cool, like way back whun like eight years ago?
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Right? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Okay? Cool? And as you look into the future for
all to Fresh Foods, what are you hoping for the
company to expand? What's the main goal?
Speaker 2 (04:21):
I think the main goal is being able to provide
fresh produce to all the schools in the country.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
I think if we can do that, then we've done
an amazing thing that benefits millions and millions of people.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Do you have a no offhand like in the Maryland area,
I don't mean to put you on the spot. What
schools are using Alta?
Speaker 2 (04:43):
So what we would be doing is we would be
partnering with basically all the produce distributors in the entire
mid Atlantic region and they would be able to opt
in for the salad bar program and we would provide
it to all of the school districts in this area. Okay,
so all of them have access to bring it in
(05:05):
for this school year.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Right, very cool? What about new initiatives for ALTA Fresh
Foods have you guys discussed that beyond twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Right now, we're trying to tackle schools. Yeah, and if
we can. If we can do that, then we'll focus
on the next objective.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Very cool. Well, it's a great goal, and I love
the sound of it. I'm very much into healthy eating
and you know that's I don't know, some people don't
like the phrase farm to table, but just fresh food,
you know, very no preservatives and all that. I'm really
into that organic kind of lifestyle. So I love it.
And where can our listeners find out more about Alta
(05:43):
