Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight. Each week we hear
from one local business owner letting us know where they
are in their business journey and how they got there.
I'm here today with Mark Hurd, President of DAPT Global. Mark,
thank you for being here for some people who might
not know. Tell us about DAPT Global. What do you
guys do? What do you produce?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Absolutely well, you know, DAP It's a product your listeners
have probably seen, you know, just about every home center,
hardware store, paint store, really any kind of retailer that
has a paint department anywhere in North America. We are
primarily in the cooks and cealance aisle in those stores.
Also in wall repair. When you for example, when you're

(00:40):
installing baseboard in your house, or you're putting a in
a door or a window, and you you know, seal
it up real nice. That's what our products do primarily
are are DAP clock. If you are doing a paint
job on your walls, you want to patch up your
nail holes, patch up anything bigger, uh, you know, we
make it a wonderful wall repair products. Not really primarily

(01:02):
under the brand name Dry Decks. A lot of people know,
are kind of our tagline there what goes on tank
and dry's white. That's those are probably two of the
better known types of products that we make.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Tell me about the spray one. It's all the spray one.
What's that specifically for?

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Is it would or well, we have, you know, a
couple of different kinds of sprays, but we've recently launched
something called spray Texture. And you know, there's a lot
of homes in certain parts of the United States where
the walls are textured and in some places even have
popcorn ceiling, very popular in the South and in the West.

(01:40):
So if you have a textured wall, but then let's
say you've got a hole in it, you got to
repair it. Very challenging to repair. So there's a we
have a nice category of products called spray Texture. And
then in our he's a business we make a very
strong selling and he's a product called weldwood, which comes

(02:01):
with a very nice spray as well. So I'm not
sure exactly which one you were thinking of, but those
are a couple of our spray products.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
No, it's very cool. So listen, I have a stone
wall in front of my house, and it seems like
every summer, I'm near it and a couple of the
stones get loose, and I don't know, the stuff I
use doesn't seem to work great. I'm i going to say,
what kind you up?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Absolutely so, you definitely have a product for that the
stone keeping the stone from being loose.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
We have a very nice line of Depth concrete passer
repair products that are really perfect for that, where you
can you know, kind of glue that stone back in
a place you can take care of any of your
hairline cracks as well. Yeah, that's an area of specialty
for us as well.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I'm buying that absolutely so how many different products, I'm
not kidding you. I'm going online right now or going
to the store and getting adapt product for that.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Hey Bob, you can see it all at Depth dot
com and you know you could find it at retail
or any of your favorite online retailers as well.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
So seriously, for that, should you wait till the weather
is a little bit warmer than like the winter to
do that or does it matter?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Okay? Most, you know, most all of our products you
know you'll find have a you know, recommended temperature typically
like right now you're in good shape. They're typically going
to be you know, forty degrees and above. It's all
very well laid out, but generally speaking, you know that
like a daylight today would be perfect.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, So how did you get your start with a
DAPT Global?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
So, you know, I'm I'm very fortunate. I've been with
our parent company, which is called RPM International. I've been
with RPM for almost twenty five years, and I came
over to DAP four years ago. I was with a
sister company called Rustolium, which is pretty widely known spray

(03:55):
paint business, also part of our parent company RP. And
that's how I got my start here. I came over
about four years ago and very exciting for me. I'm
a Baltimore lifer. You know, I grew up here. I
went to the University of Maryland. So being here at
DApp a great you know, Baltimore iconic brand is really awesome.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Very very cool. And so if you were going to
just like how many different products are there with the
adapt Global, like in a generalization, so we have the
inside talk outside for the stone go ahead.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, Well, if you were to go into our warehouse,
we would you know that we would have about twelve
hundred different items because when you think about let's just say,
that's a lot. You think that's a lot, right, mm hmm.
So when you think about calk, you've got let's say,

(04:54):
you know you need to do calk for your sighting.
You might want to match your color. So while we
sell primarily, you know, it's going to be white and
clear our biggest sellers. You know, we make you know,
sixty to one hundred on different different product lines to

(05:14):
really get all the colors covered. And then we have
you know, obviously a lot of different platforms, like we
just talked about, whether it's architecture or calk adhesive, concrete,
patch and repair. You know, you go down all those
categories as well.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Are there other products you guys are thinking of to
expand for the future.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Are you kind.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Of focusing on the skews that you have right now?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Well, we're always looking to expand, and you know, we
one of the It's funny because one of our big
initiatives right now, Bob, is we are celebrating get this,
we're celebrating our one hundred and sixtieth anniversary. Wow. Yeah,
our tagline is on the job since eighteen sixty five,

(06:02):
so it's a big year. For us, you have to
continue to launch new products, and we've expanded. You know,
one area that we've expanded in recent history is you know,
spray foam. A lot of folks use foam to fill
gaps and fill gaps like when they're installing windows, fill

(06:23):
gaps when they're you know, in walls and cavities in
their home, and that's a pretty nice newer business for us.
We're also all you know, always the spray texture that
we just talked about is newer for us. We have
a variety of other new products and we're always looking
to expand into particularly adjacent categories. For us, it's you know,

(06:48):
no surprise, we're always looking to do more. We don't
really talk about things too much until we until we
get them out there on the market, though, but I
will tell you that growth is very important for us.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
So one hundred and sixty plus years in the business,
that's really unheard of, especially when you're in a competitive
field with any kind of product. What do you think
is the source of the reason of the success of
DAPT Global all these these years.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
I mean, that's incredible, Yep, no doubt about it. For us,
in particular, the last few years but really throughout our history,
number one is innovation. We've always been leading and innovating,
and you know, way back when when sort of when
it's hard to think about this, but like when drywall

(07:41):
came on the theme, you know, we were an innovator,
and you know, products for drywall use. Now with a
category like calk is a little more entrenched in society.
It's things like, how can we get products that are
more flexible, how can we get products that dry faster?
How can we get products that accept paint sooner? How

(08:02):
we get products that are you know, more waterproof or
create a more flawless finish. So it's all those kinds
of things. But for us, the calling cards really it's
been the same innovation, reliability, now sustainability. That's been our
calling card, you know, really almost all the way back
to the beginning and it continues on today.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Wow, that's great, Mark, unbelievable. Well, where can listeners go
to find out more about DAPT Global to buy products,
to find the stores to go get your products, like
myself for my stone wall on which I am going
to do. Where can they go?

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Well, I will tell you a couple of places. First,
you could always learn more at DAPT dot com. Very
easy to do. Hey, that's about the easiest website you
could think of, right, YAP dot cof So you can
find us at DAPT dot com. You can, I will say,
as I mentioned, you can buy our products just about
every home improvement retailer, hardware store, paint store, any really

(09:03):
any store with a paint aisle, you're going to find
debt products. And then online, I would say, you know,
go to your favorite online retailer and you're going to
find a good assortment of debt products, including all those
great brick and mortar stores there. We're well aligned with
their online space.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
I mean, you know, we're hitting spring. I mean, this
is the time where guys like me start thinking about,
you know, fixing up this, fixing up that. So this
is definitely the time to pick up some debt products. Mark,
is there anything else you would like our listeners to know?
What did I miss?

Speaker 2 (09:37):
Go ahead? You know. The main thing what I really
didn't tell you is we talked so much about product
we didn't really talk about I would tell you DAP
is just really a proud member of the community. We're
deeply invested in the local community or in Baltimore. You know,
we have for our associate we have about four hundred

(09:58):
associates in Baltimore, so beyond our great corporate office down
in Canton, we've got a factory, we've got a distribution center,
we've got a marketing studio, We've got four different facilities
around town, and you know, we love being part of
the community here. Our main initiative with our associates is
something called DEPP Gives Back, where we you know, very

(10:21):
proud to partner with great organizations around town like Habitat
for Humanity, the Chess Peak, Leaving Tomorrow Children's Foundation, Living Classrooms,
college Bound Foundation, you know, friends of Fort McHenry. We
are really really involved in Baltimore, particularly supporting initiatives around housing,

(10:45):
around education, and around community development. You know, that's just
such a great fit for us. If it's Baltimore, if
it's housing related, we want to be a part of it.
And it's something we're really proud of and certainly our
associates are very proud to be associated with.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Well, I love it. It's no surprise you guys been
around for so long. I mean, you know, one hundred
and sixty years, so part of the community such great products,
and I'm so glad that you brought that up about
being involved in the community, and I love it so Mark,
thank you so much for this little introduction on DAPT
Global and I so much appreciate your time and thank

(11:22):
you very much.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Hey, it was my pleasure. Thank you so much. Have
a great day, Nay, good luck on that project.
