Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I am here today with Robert Quick,
chief Operating officer of Harbor of Grace National Law Enforcement
and First Responder Wellness Center. Robert, thanks for being here
for people who might not know. Tell us about what

(00:22):
you guys do at the wellness center.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Sure So, we are located in Hardy Grace, Maryland, and
we're a wellness facility that treats only first responders, firefighters,
police officers, military veterans who were struggling with stress or anxiety, PTSD, depression,
substance use, etc.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
What are some of the things that those people go
through that people might not know that need your wellness
center to go to. I mean, I'm sure we can
think of the worst things, but I'm sure there's last
stuff we don't even know about.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Sure so, you know, I myself was a police officer
for twenty six years in the City of Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Oh wow, and job.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
The job takes the toll. So the amount of violence
that you see on a day to day basis not
to mention other high profile incidents such as the riots
and unrest, the events that occurred down to Washington, DC
around January sixth, the events behind George Floyd or for
Baltimore specifically Freddie Gray, and even the events of nine

(01:22):
to eleven for our first responders who are in the
New York area. You know, all those things take a toll.
You then add on to that shortages faced by law
enforcement nowadays with a lot of force over time or
short staff requiring ulfsers to work, to work longer hours

(01:42):
and additional shifts. You know, compile that on to potential
situations with home life, which which may be stressful, and
you roll all that up together and you certainly wind
up with a lot of individuals that could could use
some help and some resources.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Absolutely, I'll tell you what, but I can't even fathom.
I have such respect for police and all first responders.
I don't even understand or can comprehend why everybody on
this planet, everybody in this country at least, would not
give what you guys do one hundred percent respect all

(02:18):
the time, just because of man, it's just a thankless job,
I think for a lot of people, and it shouldn't
be It should be thankful one hundred percent. And I
just it's amazing what people like you go through. And
I'm glad that you guys have this wellness center and
that you're running it. What kind of things do you
do there to treat these things, these problems that first

(02:40):
responders have.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Sure, so we're fully licensed and a credited facility. We
treat patients in a variety of approaches, so therapy. Psychotherapy
is kind of the core of our program, and our
patients every day meet with a therapist in either a

(03:03):
small group and or a one on one individual setting.
UH patients are also seen by our medical providers. We
have psychiatrists and UH nurse nps and other medical professionals
on staff that will that will see patients UH to
attend to their to their medical needs. We also have
a gym one site and a fitness instructor that guides

(03:25):
patients UH through different exercise regiments and physical activities. We
also do walks, We do art therapy, we do twelve
step work for those who are struggling with substance abuse UH,
and and a litany of other treatment forms. We'd like
to say we throw a whole lot of treatment at
individuals and a variety of formats to kind of see

(03:47):
what is going to stick and kind of speak to
them the best. Uh. And it's also a very specific
and tailored approach to treatment depending on what the individual
is struggling with, whether it is more stress related or
more PTSD related, or more substance related.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
And how long has Harbor of Grace been around there
in habiting.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Grace since twenty fifteen?

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Oh wow? And how many patients do you have currently?
Is it something that some people only come in for
a few weeks you have people there for longer months
and months and maybe years? And how does that work?
How many people?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Sure? So? How many is approximately mid sixties for capacity?
We have the capacity for fifty four residential patients. We
also have capacity for additional patients who participated in our
day program but are operating in an outpatient setting where

(04:48):
they're not actually spending the night with us. And length
of stay can vary. Usually a short length of stay
is two to three weeks. An average length of stay
is four weeks or twenty eight days, and then some
people extend five, six, seven weeks, And I think the
longest we've had somebody that I can think of right

(05:10):
offhand is approximately about three months.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Okay, now you told me you're a police officer for many,
many years. How did you get to start with this?
I mean, is this a place that you went to yourself?
If you don't mind me asking.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, no, I'm happy to share that. Yes, I myself
was struggling a career's work of stress and a lot
of trauma that I didn't process in a healthy way
began to get the better of me, and it was
recommended that I seek help at this facility. I came

(05:45):
and was a patient myself here in twenty nineteen. Was
the best decision I ever made. Only regret was that
I didn't do it about a decade sooner. And the
place was so impactful on me that when I retired
from the department in twenty twenty one, I came here
to work at the facility and currently I'm the COO

(06:09):
and help run the day to day operations.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Wow, that's amazing. So it really helped you, and you
want to help others who went through a tough situation
you did. Where were you a police officer?

Speaker 2 (06:19):
If you know, I'm me asking Baltimore City.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Oh yeah, Yeah, that's rough. Yeah, you mentioned that before.
That's right, that's it's got to be hard, man, I
can't imagine it is.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
And the majority of the staff members at our facility
are themselves either active or former first responders as well,
and a fair amount of that percentage we're also former patients.
So I think that is also something that really gives
our facility a leg up over some other treatment centers
and some other treatment options is that, you know, we
are run by first responders for first responders, and we

(06:53):
understand what it's like to be a patient.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Wow, what an incredible facility you must have there. What
do you see that? Where do you see the future
of Harbor of Grace? National law enforcement and first responders
on the center were kind of plans.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yeah, so business is growing. You know, it does seem that,
you know, officer safety and wellness and treatment is more
of an in topic of conversation nowadays than it certainly
was years before. So with more awareness and less stigma
around getting treatment, we are seeing more officers ask for help.

(07:29):
We also are looking to launch the first quarter of
twenty twenty six a new property that is going to
be a dedicated women's only program. To focus on our
female first responders.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
Wow, fantastic. And do you have programs for not just
the individual who is going through the tough times, but
for family members as well or is it just separately
first specifically for the first responder who needs your help.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
So that's a great question. And so we do also
treat the immediate family members of first responders as we
find that oftentimes they're struggling, we're suffering can be related
to the career choice of the spouse significant other, so
we do do that. We also, generally speaking as a

(08:19):
course of treatment, will have family sessions or have the
family involved with the patient's treatment so that they can
know what best to expect after treatment and how they
can best support the patient for success once their treatment
is completed.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Very smart, very smart. Well listen, I'm so interested in this.
It's such an I didn't even know what existed. I'm
glad that I know now WHEREK and listeners are working.
More importantly, first responders who need help like this find
more about your wellness center.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
Sure, so they can definitely go to our website which
is Harbor of Grace Recovery dot com. All the basic
information is on the website. And they can contact us
through that website. They could also call us at our
main number which is four four three five zero two

(09:16):
eight six six and feel free to reach out, submit
a question, or schedule a visitor a tour.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
That's great, Robert Quick, thanks for giving us an introduction
on this incredible place that you guys have there and
have it to Grace. Really appreciate the time and thank
you for your time.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Thank you, sir. Take care.
