Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I am here today with Malika
the Lancey, President of Maryville Preparatory School. Malika give us
an overview about the school itself.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Maryvale is a Catholic independent all girls schools serving students
in grades six through twelve. This year happens to be
a really special year because we are celebrating eighty years
of excellence in Catholic girls education. Yes, so we were
founded on September ninth, nineteen forty five by the sisters
of Notre Dame Dana Moore. So again we will be
(00:37):
celebrating the entire year. We have the most amazing students
and faculty, and we are so proud of the legacy
we've been able to leave in Baltimore.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Oh, that's fantastic. So, and how's the school broken up?
Middle school, upper school, all of that.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yes, we have a middle school and an upper school
six through twelve. We do have many buildings on our campus.
So one thing I love about r E mails that
our students' middle and upper school students get to interact
quite often, and so our younger students really have strong
role models and our upper school girls and our upper
school girls learn how to be those role models and
to be great mentors for our middle schoolers.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's awesome. As far as the curriculum, what do you
think is the one of the biggest strengths of Maryvale
is a student coming in?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
We have many, many strengths, and so many things pop
into my head when you ask that question. I'm going
to start with our leadership institute. We have a leadership
institute called the Mitchell Leadership Institute, and that is something
that all of our students get to take advantage of
grade six through twelve. So we have dedicated leadership classes
in middle school and then in the high school, the
girls have the opportunity to pursue a certificate in leaderships
(01:45):
and take courses like entrepreneurship and finance and Foundations of Business.
I think that really sets us apart in terms of
creating the next generation of female leaders.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
How do you teach leadership? Like, you don't have to
tell me exactly what's in the class, but that is
a very unique and special thing I think is very important.
I'm glad your school has that, because I don't think
you're right. I don't think many schools really specifically teach leadership.
It's just something you kind of learn on your own sometimes, right.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yes, absolutely, And we had an outside organization comment sort
of evaluate our programs last year, and the feedback we
got was that we are one of the top leadership
programs in the whole country for girls, which was amazing.
And what we start with is really having the girls
know themselves, being clear about their values and being comfortable
acting on those values, to be confident, to be advocates
(02:38):
for themselves and others, and to be a positive force
in the world.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
And how important is community for mary Vale as students
in the surrounding community. How important is that?
Speaker 2 (02:51):
To you guys, It's extremely important. We are very interested
in supporting one another. We are like a family on
this cab. The girls are all like sisters, and the
adults in the community we treat the kids as if
they're our own.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, we all do.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
And that's everyone from our maintenance staff to our development
office to our teachers. We function as one big family,
and therefore the girls feel that love and support, which
again helps them be able to be confident and be
able to lead. And then we reach out to other
organizations in the community as well to be sure that
we're connected in a way that's impactful.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Learn, Lead, Succeed. I think it's one of your monikers
at mary Vale. When the girls are there and they leave,
I'm sure you make a big impact on them. As
teachers and administrators. What are your connection with alumni? Do
you connect well with them? Are they involved currently into
(03:50):
what you guys are doing there in the school.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Absolutely, we have a very active alumnae association, and we
pride ourselves and staying connected to our alumni by doing
things like offering events and pro that speak to them
and where they are at their point in life. Because
we've been around eighty years, we have grandmothers who are alumni,
and we also have kids who are twenty and twenty
one years old. We try to tailor our communications and
our program in a way that keeps them feeling connected
(04:14):
to mary Vale regardless of the stage that they're in
their lives. And what we found is true about all
of our alumnai is that they love our students and
they love coming back to campus for sporting events and
for arts events, and just to show their support for
our academic program as well and all that they're doing
across all areas.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Malika, how did you get your start with Maryvale? Are
you a former student or you just got passionate about
the school itself.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
I'm not a former student, but I am a graduate
of an all girls Catholic school, and so I felt
naturally connected to the community and to the mission. I'm
also the daughter and granddaughter of Baltimore City Public school educators,
So schools and teaching and learning that's just been a
part of my life since the very very beginning. A
(04:57):
friend of mine heard about the position that was open
here at me Vale into twenty twenty three when I started,
and I applied and fell in love with the school immediately,
and thankfully things worked out and here I am. And
I've worked in several independent schools in the Baltimore area
in a variety of teaching and learning roles, and this
has just been an amazing fit for me, and I'm
really thrilled about being able to use my skills here
(05:17):
at Maryvale.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
That's awesome. And as you look to the future, I
mean you guys are in a semester right now, I'm sure,
but what do you guys have planned for the future.
What do you see as far as new initiatives, things
you want to add to the campus the curriculum.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
One of the most important things for us is to
again the community engagement. We are such a tight knit
community on our campus that we want to make sure
our students, parents, families alumne also feel that connectivity with
our larger community. So one thing that we are looking
toward is really expanding our service program and really taking
(05:54):
the time to understand the needs of our community. We
are located in Baltimore County, so we have a vested
interest in Baltimore County and also Baltimore City. We want
to really be known as a place that cares and
that shows that we care through our actions. We have
a program called Mission and Ministry here at Maryvale where
we really look at three very important areas of our
mission Inclusion and belonging, service and campus ministry. And our
(06:18):
goal is to help the girls understand that those three
ideals work together, and when they work together, we can
make positive change for our communities and for ourselves.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Absolutely, And you know what, where can listeners find out
more information about Maryville Preparatory School.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Absolutely, we love visitors, so feel free to visit. We
have two events called Meet Maryvale that are similar to
an open house event. We have one for prospective upper
school students on Thursday October sixteenth and one for prospective
middle school students on Thursday October thirtieth. So please do
visit our website at www dot Maryvale dot com. You
(06:54):
can sign up for one of our Meet Maryvale events there.
You can learn all about our school there as well.
Feel free to call our admission office anytime. We'd be
happy to tell you more about Maryvale.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah. Yeah, and you know what, we could talk hours
about every single little thing about Maryvale. But this is
like a nice little overview about what you guys have
to offer. Is there anything though at this point you
would like to say about the school.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
One thing that I do want to mention is that
we are huge components of holistic learning. So we have
a very strong athletic program, a very strong arts program,
and we value different learning styles here as well, so
we support students with different learning profiles and students that
are working on skills in terms of executive function and
(07:39):
we really do embrace the whole child and all the
gifts and talents that that particular student brings. And the
last thing I will say that I haven't mentioned is
the word joy, which is really really important to me
and really really important to our community. We want our
girls to be joyful. We know life can be hard
for all of us, for teenage girls sometimes in particular,
and we want them to experience fun and to experience
(08:02):
joy and love.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Awesome. Hey, Mellika, thank you so much for your time.
I enjoyed learning a little bit about Maryvale, and hey,
good luck with the rest of the fall season, fall semester.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Thank you, thank you so much.
