Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is iHeartRadio's Maryland Business Spotlight, presented by Rosedale Bank.
Each week, we hear from one local business owner letting
us know where they are in their business journey and
how they got there. I'm here today with Nicki Miller,
vice president of Saint John's Jewelers. Thank you for being here.
Nicki tell us about Saint John's Jewelers.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, we started as my grandparents started out here. They
started nineteen seventy three. Wow, is when they started it.
They were across the street for about twenty two years,
I want to say, and then over here for about
twenty so I think we've been in business for about
(00:38):
fifty two years. And then yeah, we're third generation, so
I'm stepping up the plate here to take on that
role here soon. And then yeah, we are located in
Ellicott City, Maryland, so we're not right in downtown Old
Ellicott City, but we're about five minutes from there.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Say mm hm, So your grandparents started it, and then
your your mother is Linda.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Right, yes, Linda, So then she's been working there since
I think forever. She she was always stepping in, but
she really started I think when she was a teenager.
She really was there full time helping work. Then she
went to become a drmalogist and out in California, right,
and then came back decided that she was ready to
(01:29):
take that role further. She started working more with them,
and then I started to follow in her footsteps, and
I also went out to California and became a dromalogist
as well.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Oh wow, that's so cool. And she's going to eventually
hand a baton over to you, right.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yes, exactly. Yeah, But she does love work, so I
don't see her leaving any size, dude, But I'm happy
to work with her. She's a great person to work with.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Tell me about the business. Tell me about Saint John's Jewelers,
the things you offer. I mean, obviously it's a jewelry store.
But what makes you guys special there in the Elicate
City area.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, so, I'd say we are mainly a repair shop here,
but we also do design work, whether it's custom engagement
rings or people have family pieces that they're like, hey,
I love this, I love the stones, but let's make
it a bit more modern or a bit more for me.
So we do that all the time here as well.
(02:28):
And then we are a praisers, So me and my
mom both appraise jewelry for insurance purposes or if they
just want, you know, to get a value on what
they have, if they're not sure if it's real or not.
We definitely help out in that aspect as well. I'd
say also we're big in donating to different organizations churches
(02:51):
here as well. They're small miracles animal shelter that we
also help with doing different things, like we have a
little tray here of cost jewelry and everything's five dollars
and it all goes to small miracles, and I kid
you not, we make like one hundreds of one hundreds
of dollars from it.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Really, it's been.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Such a beautiful thing. Oh yeah, it's it's huge, and
I'm just so happy. One of our coworkers came up
with this idea and we had no idea it was
going to take off like it did. But it's been great.
It's been really great.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
It's so cool. You have a successful business with the
family for years, it's, you know, this generational thing, and
then you know, you get to give back to the
to the community, which I'm sure is equally as rewarding.
Even more so, it's a great feeling.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Huh oh, yeah, absolutely, It's probably one of the best
things to have here, to have them support, you know,
us as a small business and then being able to
help them also in return in different ways. It's it's
really beautiful and I'm glad other people get to, you know,
notice that and realize it. You know, it's hard sometimes
with online businesses and stuff. But like you guys, we
(03:59):
appreciate you know, you guys helping get small businesses node
noticed and keeping us, you know, alive and thriving.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
From me, it's really the most the cornerstone of this
country is small business, and it seems like as decades
roll on, you know, the big companies are eating up
the little guy, and you know, it's not what it's about,
you know, And the fact that you guys have been
around for so long and continue to be successful is
(04:27):
certainly a credit to your family and your customers and
the community around you. And that's great. What about the
future of Saint John's Jewelers. Looking ahead, let's say you
do take the reins any new initiatives, well currently, let's
maybe we'll look at the current aspect of new initiatives.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
You know, I mean, I am a big dreamer. I
just got to figure out which dreams I want to
you know, move forward with, whether that's opening up another
store in another state, or if it's just you know,
you know, it could be I love to travel, so
if it's you know, going cross country while I'm selling
my jewelry on the road, I'm not sure yet. I
(05:09):
think those are some bigger dreams, but you know, you
never know, Yeah, what's the come of it. We are
starting to do some markets. They've gotten bigger, I think
over the year. So like I don't know if you've
heard of like not necessarily flea markets, but it's more
of like a thrift market. Like you know how people
(05:31):
are like reusing their clothes like at good wills and stuff.
Well they're creating markets of like a state jewelry and
stuff like that. So I'll actually be going to one
in Frederick in October. It's called Key City Thrist, I believe,
(05:51):
And so that'll be our first one, and we're gonna,
you know, give that a shot. And I was trying
to see if maybe we could get into some more markets,
so I'd say that's gonna be maybe a newer thing.
We're going to try to you know, see how that goes.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, I think that's great, it's fantastic. So let's look
for people who want to know more about Saint John's Jewelers.
So it's mostly designing, right, it's most creatively of existing jewelry.
I mean you do sell jewelry there, but that's that's
your main thing, right yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Correct? Yeah, and i'd say repair, which is honestly lovely,
very cool.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
But yeah, where can people go to find out more
about you guys?
Speaker 2 (06:32):
They can check out our Facebook or Instagram at Saint
John's Jewelers as well as our website at Saint Johns
Jewelers dot com.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Very cool. And you're at ninety one forty one Baltimore
National Pike, right, correct, yep, in Ellicott City. Very cool.
Nicki Miller, vice president of Saint John's Jewelers, have to
stop by. I do love that areas. Yeah, we'll definitely
check that out. And thank you so much for your
and giving us a little introduction to Saint John's Jewelers
(07:02):
for those who might not know. But yeah, family owned
business man, that's the way to go. And just congratulations
on your family's success in that.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I appreciate your time
you call in. I appreciate iHeartRadio and Rosedale Bank. It's
