Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here's a guy that deals with the shootings and conspiracies. Well,
he's most of his adult life. Brad Garrett, who is
a security and expert and terrorism expert for ABC News. Brad,
thanks so much for spending some time with us today.
Give me some first thoughts about the assassination of Charlie.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Kirk So, you know, you have a single shot that
he is without getting graphic here, shot at such a
place that I think the shooter knew a shot like
that would within Charlie Kirks' life. He only did one shot,
which means he's got some level of proficiency if you
(00:43):
combine that with what law enforcement just told us a
few minutes ago in a press conference that they got
video of a guy going up on the roof, coming
down from the roof, going into a wooded area apparently
behind this building, and into a neighborhood, of dishing the
assault weapon, which I'm going to guess of some version
(01:05):
of an AR fifteen or an M four. I'd be
really interested to know if they had a scope on
a tripod that then he just disappeared into this neighborhood. Yeah,
he seemed like they maybe even know who he is.
There's a level of confidence in their voices that suggest
(01:29):
to me that they're onto this guy, and they're not
going to release his picture obviously until they play out
their own leads, because you know, the less a suspect
knows about.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
You, the law.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Enforcement knowing his identity, it can help increase your chances
of catching him.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
There are some people out there that are speculating this
was a professional hit because he just was such a
great shooter and he only fired one shot. And apparently,
and you can tell me if this is correct, he
had tactical gear on.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well, he had on black. All I know is head
on black clothing. But you know, seventy five percent of
the school shooters you and I talk about have on
black clothing. So he may be something in between, something
like has a you know, has a proficiency in in shooting,
like in a sniper position. I mean, could he be
(02:24):
former military, could he be former law enforcement, current military,
current law enforcement? Maybe? Who knows, But you know, the
idea that he gets the weapon and then ran off
or walked off, whatever it might be. I mean, does
that suggest something in between a true professional or not.
(02:46):
It's really hard to say because you can go a
lot of directions here. I think it kind of hits
what you're asking me. Could he have been hired directed
to go do this, and that's an angle I'm sure
they're looking at. Or was this just another personal vendetta,
(03:06):
not personal that he knows Charlie Kirk, but for what
Charlie Kirk stands for that he committed this shooting. So
but the clearly it's somebody that knows how to shoot,
and so I think you got to start with that.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
I heard an investigator talk earlier and they said two things.
They said, it's difficult to escape a scene like this,
especially if you're driving a car, because they're going to
get your license plate, and then after that they're going
to get your cell phone, and then they have you
explain that.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Okay, So clearly the ability to capture license plates, I mean,
how many police guards have those readers on the back
of the cars told both places, capture your license plates.
So you know that is a direction you can go. Now,
(03:57):
I don't know that maybe less so in the environment
we're talking about. Yes, it's a large school that he
walked into a neighborhood. You know, if he had driven, yes,
to decrease the odds. It also increases the odds that
somebody may have seen him get into a v But
but you know, to his maybe thinking through this, because
(04:21):
he just didn't all of a sudden show up on
the building today. He planned this. You know, he had
he had a pickle location, you know, had he been
up on that roof before. Who knows what. Maybe we'll
find out, and that he had an escape route which
maybe in the short run was the wiser way to
(04:41):
go because he dropped you know, you don't have a
car to your point or to your caller's point, and
and you drop the weapon. Now I get why he
dropped it, and you know that's a that's a really
vital piece of evidence and we'll see if it's linked
back to him. But you who don't want to look
like anything other than as the police just described, another
(05:04):
college student which probably walks through that neighborhood all the time,
and you just blend in and you walk away. And
let's say you have a car five blocks away, you
get in it and drive off. So so we'll see.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, Brad Garrett, ABC News Crime and Terrorism analyst in Washington,
thanks so much for spending some time with us that
was fascinating,
