Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we're going to talk to Greg g and Grande
career advice expert. Check them out at go to Greg
dot com. You know, Greg, it's Giangrandi, isn't it. And
every once in a while I say gim Grande and
I've had I just want to let you know I
feel your pain because I've gotten mente all my life.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
So I apologize for that.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
No apology necessary. I you know, you always have these
moments where you remember, like critical things. I remember an
Italian teacher that I had in high school and in
high school growing up in Brooklyn, I used to pronounce
my last name gian Grande. And the Italian teacher in

(00:43):
my high school said, don't ever pronounce your name like
that ever. He said, your name is Jihan Grande, Oh
my name? I said, yeah. But like if I pronounced
my name John Grande and broke, I'm gonna get my
butt kicked. So it's okay. But now I say gim Grande.

(01:09):
I don't say John Grande. It sounds a little pretentious,
but you know whatever, it's all good.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Hey pretentious. I love John Grande. You sound you know, well,
you sound European. It's just so special.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Hey, let's talk about people that are looking to get
ano the job. I remember when job hopping was a
real big thing, when people would leave jobs and there
was no loyalty to jobs, they would always go for
the higher salary. That's a little bit more difficult these days,
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Absolutely? And it was really big coming out of COVID
when companies went on a hiring spree and there were
a lot of startups and people were throwing companies were
throwing a lot of money around to lower talent away
from other companies, and so it was it was, you know,
the wild West out there. People were jumping and doubling

(01:59):
their companies. But then as soon as there is a
slowdown or companies realize that, you know, they over hired,
they are ruthless about cutting back. And those people who
chase money instead of like the right career opportunity, many
of them regretted it. Although historically the faster way to

(02:24):
like compensation growth, like to accelerating your compensation growth, is
through moving jobs. That is not an uncommon way, rather
than staying in one place and getting those annual like
three or four percent increases and a periodic promotion. It
is how people kind of like get a big boost
in compensation by moving periodically. But right now the market

(02:47):
is tight. The you know, companies are laying off or
they're slowing down hiring, so it is harder to find
other jobs right now, and if harder to cash in
on a bigger paycheck because there are a lot of
people looking and companies aren't desperate to hire, so you're

(03:09):
not going to get the opportunities that you did previously.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
That's cyclical, though, isn't it. I mean, is going to
come a time where it may happen again.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Absolutely it is. It all depends on how the labor
market is. But the one thing that I always caution
people and I'm giving career advice, is it's it is
good to be aware of what's going on in the market,
and if you can leverage your current position for a
better care it also comes with an accelerated growth in conversation,

(03:40):
that's great, but if you just chase money, that usually
is not good long term. Like ten percent more in
compensation but fifty percent less in happiness, that's not a
good calculus for long term strategy. So make sure it's
not just for the money, that it's the right next
career step for you.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
But it is a good way of advancing your career
and it's a good way of getting more money. It
just may take you a longer time. You have to
prove yourself and the job you're in before another company
is going to find you interesting or another company is
going to think, oh, man, I got to hire this guy.
It's going to help my company. It used to be
You're right, though, people will just jump jobs way too early.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
True, and if you have a series of short term
employment with different employers and you keep jumping for the
next biggest thing, eventually that's going to cause an employer
to say, this person isn't loyal, they're not going to stick. Look,
they've had four jobs in a row where they've been
there for less than two years. I know when I

(04:43):
see someone like that, that is a big red flag
for me. Now, sometimes they're really good reasons why someone
has had a series of short term employment, but if
somebody keeps jumping and that's their pattern, it's going to
end up hurting them in the long run and not
helping well.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
They still get an interview to explain why they've been jumping.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Maybe it depends like if if I see too many
short term since I many of them bother interviewing the person,
because there are enough people out there, there's enough talent
out there that don't have those red flags right off
the bat.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Hey, I don't know if you saw this, but this
is kind of hot on social media right now and
it has to do with something now termed and I've
done it in the past, so I didn't call it this,
but it's called bathroom camping where at work. You know
what it is, right, you go at work, you go
into the bathroom, even if you don't have to go

(05:40):
to sit in the stall for some me time.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
And do businesses frown on that?

Speaker 3 (05:49):
I don't think business is really comment on it, like
there isn't a policy don't go into the stall unless
you have to go with with the With the prevalence
of these open space plans and more employees having fewer
private spaces, yeah, it's common. I mean I've done it too.

(06:11):
I just need, you know, a little a little me time.
But I also know people who like disappeared for forty
five minutes and they say where were you to say,
I was taking a nap, Well.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
You have to give them points for honesty at that point,
don't you.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Well, yeah, as long as they're telling their coworker and
not their boss, I think honestly is fine. But also
you have to be careful, Like there are conversations and
confidential conversations that go on and like, and people don't
check the stalls to see if there's somebody in the stall,
and some really embarrassing things and inappropriate things have been

(06:49):
said with other people in the bathroom without others checking
who might be in the stall, just getting a little
me time.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Oh that's always a great scene in a movie. How
many movies where that happens in? I was that person
in the stall and I started hearing a conversation.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
I should not be a part of that. That's when
you go, you know, you make yourself known.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Oh no, that's when you get really quiet and you
pull your feet up. That's what you do. That's not
the reaction. That's a bad reaction. Greg g and Grande

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Thanks a lot, Greg, always fun.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
