Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for being here this morning, starting off a brand
new week, and we start off with some tremendous news
you've heard it already and the Big three great news
for New Jersey transit commuters. New Jersey's first rail strike
in decades has officially come to an end. Oh, he
had to get out there first and get to the
microphone and say that line that he knew was going

(00:22):
to be used by everybody. That is the good news.
The bad news you still have to find another way
into work today because the trains, for some bizarre reason,
won't start running again until tomorrow. I know they got
to check the trains for safety, They got to check
the rails. Why didn't they do that overnight? I think

(00:43):
it was possible. The top of one hundred and sixty
foot tall ship owned by the Mexican Navy and used
for training. You've seen the video, I'm sure by now
it's heartbreaking. It crashes into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two,
an injury at least twenty two, and eleven of those
twenty two are in critical condition.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It hit the bridge around the walkway side and just collapsed.
All the lights went off and it seemed like people
went into the water. We were hoping that these sailors
had enough time to unharness themselves because in the photos
of videos you can see that they're harnessed to the mast,
and then unfortunately it seems they weren't able to and
they were thrown into the water.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah, it can make it over the highest point of
the bridge. You can make it under the highest point
of the bridge. But it lost power, it lost steering,
and it went into a shorter end of the bridge
on the Brooklyn side, and that's what caused the crash.
Eighty two year old former President is Joe Biden is

(01:43):
diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Being that he is an older individual, his ability to
tolerate a more aggressive form of treatment may be limited.
But that being said, prostate cancer in general is a
freadable form of cancer.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
And what do you know, he announces this today. He's
probably had it for a while. He probably knew about
it for a while because there are White House doctors.
But this comes. We know he knew about it last week,
But this comes right after the news website Axios obtained
a copy of the audio recording of an interview with
the former president as part of the Federal prosecutor Robert

(02:25):
Hurri's investigation into classified documents found in Biden's Delaware home,
the one where he said he couldn't press charges because
no jury would convict him because he is a sympathetic
elderly man with a failing memory. And he got blasted
for that. Listen, this is what twenty seventeen eighteen dons here.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Remember in this timeframe, my son is either about deployed
or his dying.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yeah, that wasn't the timeframe at all, and that wasn't
the topic. He just started rambling as he does throughout
the tape, and that was hidden for it from us
for a long time. Robert Hurr was villified by the
Democrats for saying he couldn't charge Biden because of what
you just heard right there, and anybody that brought it
up would be villified, And yet it was all true.

(03:20):
If you're not angry, you should be. Also. Eaton Alexander,
the American hostage was recently released by Himmas called and
said thank you to Donald Trump's.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Really honored, and you're an American and we love you
and we're going to take good care of you.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
And your parents are incredible.

Speaker 6 (03:37):
I see your mother. She was pushing me around a
little bit.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
She was putting a lot of pressure on.

Speaker 7 (03:45):
Me, like a good mom, like a Jewish.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
And how about those Nicks. You have to do it.

Speaker 8 (03:55):
It's our turn.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
That was euphoria and that continue throughout the night outside
the garden Friday night, after the Knicks defeated the Boston
Celtics to move one step closer to the team's first
NBA championship since nineteen seventy three. Next up is the
Eastern Conference Championship against the Indiana Pacers. As Jacquelin said,

(04:23):
that is going to start on Wednesday. Now, let's get
to Mike Kelly, Award winning columnists for North Jersey dot
Com and The Record. God bless you, Mike Kelly. You
watch that debate between the Democrats. I don't think I'd
be able to take it, So you can fill this
all what happened.

Speaker 9 (04:43):
Not all of it. It's uh, you know, it's it's interesting, Larry,
we haven't been able. We've been talking about this before
that this election campaign hasn't really gained traction. I think
we saw evidence of that last night. It just hasn't
gained traction with people yet. And it's hard to understand why.

(05:04):
I'm not sure. I'm not quite sure. I get it.
Maybe the fact that, you know, the American public is
just in particularly in New Jerseys, is tired of elections.
I'm not sure. But you know, it's not as if
this state doesn't have problems. I mean, just look at
what's happened at Newark Airport, and of course with the
NJ Transit trains just in the last week or so.

(05:26):
This is a This is a time I think for
public servants to start standing up and proposing some kinds
of solutions to these basic problems. But it just hasn't
gained traction yet with the voters.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, and there's lingering problems in New Jersey that they
talk about every campaign and never seem to be resolved.
You still have high property taxes, you still have businesses
leaving and people leaving. You have some problems with the schools.
There's some great schools, but there's schools that don't get
enough funding, and so this, and yet yet it seems

(06:02):
like Democrats in New Jersey, just like across the country,
are running against Donald Trump.

Speaker 9 (06:08):
Well, I was going to say that I think one
of the problems here is that the Democrats have been
should we say, distracted or perhaps lured into turning Donald
Trump into the bad guy of the election. And I
just don't think that's working. Look, Donald Trump, there's lots
of lots of time and lots of reasons to criticize him.

(06:30):
But I think what we're talking about here in New
Jersey is and again you and I have talked about
this before, Larry, this is a kitchen table election. This
is all about paying your taxes, trying to deal with
the rising cost of living, trying to commute to New
York if that's where you work, trying to just simply
drive on a road that isn't under construction. There's a

(06:53):
kind of mess feeling out here in New Jersey that
has been lingering, and I think people are fed up
with it, and I think they want their governor to
lead them out of this morass. And I don't think
any that none of these folks have really clicked yet
with the with the voting public. And that's why I

(07:14):
think it's it's Jack Chitarelli's raced to lose. He's, of
course the Republican nominee, well, the leading Republican nominee and
likely Republican nominee.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, he's way ahead in the polls right now, and
poor John Kramnik has not been able to get any traction.
I'm a little surprised by Bill Spadia. I thought he'd
do better than he did.

Speaker 9 (07:35):
I'm not actually, I'm actually not Larry. I think you know,
he's a I'm not trying to win. He's a radio guy.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Well, thanks, I was talking to you.

Speaker 10 (07:49):
Yes, you don't have another career coming, Mary.

Speaker 6 (07:53):
I just I just.

Speaker 9 (07:56):
And I just blew my miye. No. I think he
doesn't really have much of a record of any public service,
and I think and neither does Jack Chattarelli. But I
think Chatterrelly has really managed to capture that corner of

(08:17):
the market, so to speak, in talking directly to voters
about things that are on their minds. I mean, let's
just consider the for instance, the issue of immigration. It's
a huge issue here in New Jersey. But the Democrats
have lined up in favor of supporting sanctuary cities and
that sort of thing, which I think goes over like
the proverbial led balloon with voters, whereas Chattarelli has has

(08:40):
has lined up in support of, you know, a much
stronger immigration policy and I think that that's very appealing
to many voters.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
No, I agree with you, and it's it is fascinating
to me, how disorganized, And I guess it's part of
the brand the Democrats have been. Nobody has been able
to break out, I know, Mikey, Cheryl Leeds, but not
by a lot. You'd think at this point somebody would
break away.

Speaker 9 (09:07):
I mean, are we going to have a winner of
this primary with less than twenty five percent of the vote,
less than thirty percent of the vote. That's the way
it's looking. And uh, that strikes me as unfair here,
and I think the reason. Let me circle back to
this one thing. All these candidates are proclaiming that they
want to fight Trump. Oh my goodness, I'm so tired

(09:27):
of hearing the word fight in commercials. You think we
have a bunch of gang members out here trying to fight.
I mean, my goodness. They're even doing commercials with boxing
gloves and all kinds of stuff.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
Stnheimer's commercial. Yes, he just wanted already body of his.
If I had it, I might do a boxing ad too.
He loves a good unless.

Speaker 9 (09:54):
Oh that was a I was that was ai. But
I mean it's it's it's not funny, it's it's not interesting,
and it's not connecting. And those those are those are
deadly toxins for any political campaign.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Mike Kelly, Award winning columnists for North Jersey dot Com
and The Record. Mike, that was interesting. Thank you so much.

Speaker 9 (10:15):
Thanks so much, Larry, take you Penny.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
The chihuahuah may get a new law that will protect
other little dogs just like her. We'll talk about it next.
Thank you for your talkbacks. The competition's hot and heavy
for talkback of the morning because you know, because of
the prize. Of course, you get a mentee in the morning.
T shirt very highly sought after going for a lot

(10:39):
more than you would buy it for on the streets.
They are selling them on the streets. By the way,
I saw something yep, well and that's a good I
didn't know. Oh, I don't even know. I have to
check it to see if it's an I'm not surprised.
They're all the best designers are. That's why everybody's been
calling in about the Biden diagnosis. Good morning, guys.

Speaker 11 (11:04):
I don't want to minimize the ex president's condition. Well,
my question is, did doctor Jill make the diagnosis that's
well by.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
She is a doctor of education, but you must call
her doctor. I know a lot of people that are PhDs.
None of them you have to call doctor. But doctor
Jill is very proud of her doctorate in education.

Speaker 11 (11:29):
If Joe Biden has this terrible prostate cancer which is
so advanced, and he probably does, it means they were
hiding his mental and his physical ailments because it didn't
just pop up yesterday. This is something that's been going
on for a while. If it's that advanced, so what
was going on in the White House.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Yeah, that's a great point. And as many people have
pointed out, if they just found this, then the White
House doctor should be fired for incompetence.

Speaker 12 (12:01):
Question on the Mexican ship that hit the Brooklone Bridge,
why didn't they drop the anchor when they realized they
didn't have any power and he had a current that
was pulling him under the bridge. That's the first rule
I would think that the ship would do is to

(12:22):
drop the anchor to stop moving in a direction they
don't want to go.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
That's a great point, and I know there's going to
be an investigation. Now I don't know anything about ship sailing,
so I'm not sure it would have worked or they
could have dropped an anchor that quickly, but there will
be an investigation, and if that could have happened, believe me,
we're going to hear about it in the next couple
of weeks. By the way, Natalie gets to decide what

(12:52):
talkbacks make the air and which ones don't make the air. Yeah,
so let me just give you a tip on how
you can get on the air. You leave a talk
back like this one, Natalie.

Speaker 13 (13:04):
Last week your daughter graduated college graduations. I want to
let you know that Larry, Jacqueline and Chris praised you
so much for everything you do and everything that you've
always done. I just want to make sure that they
tell you while you're there and not just while you're
at a graduation.

Speaker 10 (13:25):
Good jolly, I have.

Speaker 13 (13:26):
A great thank you.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
I can't do that. That's good. I love to say
nice things behind people's well.

Speaker 6 (13:38):
I just wanted to say thank you because I actually
got a text from somebody who was listening saying that
you were saying nice things.

Speaker 12 (13:44):
So thank you.

Speaker 10 (13:45):
And yes, I was at my daughter's graduation as she
graduated with her masters last week, and we're very proud.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
I know. That's wonderful and I'm glad you got to
go to that real quick. Let's talk about Penny the
chihuahuah being attacked. Did you all see the video, by
the way, have you seen the video of this dog
being attacked? Oh my god. Two pit bulls that were
not leashed attack this little chihuahua and the fact that
it survived is incredible, and of course everybody was outraged,

(14:14):
including members of the New York City Council.

Speaker 6 (14:17):
Why is it then a dog can attack another dog,
nothing get done, So we need to change out long.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
The NYPD needs to be able to take a report
on dog on dog attacks and that way we can
take that report to file civilly if we need to.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
Right, that was, uh, well, I don't have the names
right here. Hold on, I'll get the names for you.
But the uh that was two people that had a
news conference just the other day in the park and
this is another person that was there. They do have
this name, Jennifer Raj Koman, who is a member of

(14:53):
the City Council.

Speaker 14 (14:54):
Real criminal penalties for people who let aggressive dogs attack
other dogs. It'll create consequence for leaving the scene of
an animal attack. It will crept down on people who
keep letting their dogs off fish illegally, over and over again.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
The other two council members who do deserve to be recognized,
and I'm sorry I wrote them down. I just couldn't
find it. Gail Brewer and Carlina Rivera. They were the
two This is gonna fly through, by the way, that
right now. The reason that they need a bill is
because the poor woman, Lauren Claus who, by the way,

(15:32):
co owns the dog with her ex boyfriend. They have
custody together. I don't know if one gets it on
the weekends. I'm not sure what happens, but you know,
it was horrendous. The attack was horrendous. And we found
out that these pitbulls have attacked other dogs too. There's
video online over that. And there's nothing you can do
because in New York City and State, a dog is

(15:54):
considered property and so nobody can be criminally charged with that.
And that is about to change if this goes through.
But Lauren Claws talks about the frustration she had in
trying to get something to do something about her dog.

Speaker 12 (16:11):
I'll call an organization and then they'll say, call this
organization which has called.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
This organization, which leads back to the NYPD, who goes, sorry, yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
And the NYPD will say to you, there's nothing we
can do until the law changes. Well, that law is
about to change, and someone who lets their dog without
a leash and just run through the park and that
dog attacks another dog can now be charged. And so
that's well, after you see that anything law, I think

(16:41):
it should be called. I can't believe that dog survived
and and the stitches down the back and stomach of
that dog are just horrible. So Penny the Chihuahua is
a hero. I know she went through a lot, but
she's going to help save lots of other dogs in
New York City. Now, let's get the news at eight
thirty with Jacqueline Carl Jacquelin.

Speaker 6 (17:02):
Good Morning. New Jersey Transit trains will start rolling again Tuesday,
following an end to the engineer strike.

Speaker 10 (17:09):
The strike started on Friday and was over before the
end of the weekend. NJ Transit President Chris colorI announcing
a deal between the agency and the union representing hundreds
of engineers following a wage dispute.

Speaker 7 (17:21):
A series of concessions that came together by way of
a work rule that will eventually end up paying for
the fair wage that the unions have asked for.

Speaker 10 (17:31):
The Engineer's union have been working without a contract for
more than five years. As for today, with trains still halted,
there's extra J transit bus service, including at four parking
ride locations. I'm scappringle wr news and.

Speaker 6 (17:43):
The world's largest retailer is being told to quote eat
the tariffs. President Trump posted on truth social over the
weekend quote that Walmart should stop trying to blame tariffs
as the reason for raising prices. Walmart's CFO says they'll
try to work with suppliers to keep price is as
low as they can for consumers. And this next story
affects everybody. According to dermatologists, we're showering all wrong. There

(18:09):
is an order we should be showering in for maximum cleanliness.
Step one, wash your hair first. Gives the shampoo and
conditioner more time to work their magic. Gives you a
chance to rinse any of that off your skin, which
is really important for those with sensitive or acme prone skin.
Step two, lather your body with soap. After your hair,
it's time to wash your body Overwashing can strip your

(18:31):
skin's national barrier so not too long. Step three, then shave.
Save this until last, so the warm water has a
chance to open up the hair follicles and your skin
is softer. And don't take too long in there. Five
to ten minutes is all the time it takes to
get clean. Any longer and the hot water can strip
the skin's natural oils and potentially make skin conditions like

(18:52):
egzma worse. It takes me at least ten minutes to
prepare to get in to the shower. I could never
take a five to ten minute shower. Are you guys
showering right?

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I just wrote everything you said down and that's exactly
what I do me too.

Speaker 6 (19:08):
I do everything same order, five to ten minutes.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Yes, yes, really, I can't stand to be in the
shower for a long time in.

Speaker 6 (19:15):
The morning at three am, I'm trying to get out
as fast as they can, because if I can sleep
in extra ten minutes, I will take a ten minute
less shower.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
Well, shower at night and I take my talk.

Speaker 6 (19:28):
I really say that. And you know why it's good
to shower at night too, especially if you have allergies.
It gets all the pollen out of your hair, so
so on your pillow.

Speaker 12 (19:35):
It is true.

Speaker 6 (19:36):
But regardless, I can't even imagine, Like when I see
in the movies where a guy comes in and he says, oh,
his wife says, don't you remember we have that dinner night,
and he's like, give me ten minutes. I'm gonna hop
in the shower and change. I'm like, that is just
a magical thinking. Who could do that?

Speaker 5 (19:52):
Right?

Speaker 1 (19:52):
Well, I get it. He's not just a woman thing either.
My son, my eighteen year old son, falls asleep in
the shower. Oh, it drives me crazy. That's that good
pounding on the Are you in there? Are you in there?
Coming out? That's like at forty five minutes later. So
thanks a lot, Jacqueline Carl. In the past several years,

(20:13):
as you've watched these basketball games, the three pointer has
taken over the NBA, and legendary sportscaster Warner Wolf has
a problem with that. Warner is up next plus tickets
to see The Brotherhood of Rock Tour at AH twenty five. Also,
in a candid, hilarious, and unexpectedly moving new episode of

(20:35):
On Purpose, Jay Shetty sits down with comedian, actor and
podcast superstar Bert Kreisner for a conversation that goes well
beyond the jokes, as Jay and Bert dive deep into
the real stories behind the spotlight. Open the free iHeartRadio
app and search for on Purpose with Jay Shetty and listen.

(20:57):
Now a lot going on in so let's get right
to Warner Wolf, legendary sportscaster. Warner Yeah, Hello, Hey, you're
on it.

Speaker 4 (21:07):
I thought you're going to ask me a question.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
No no, no, no, no, I here.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Too, Warner.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
You're well prepared. I get right to you.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
Ok, well you gotta ask, you know. Aaron Boone keeps
taking out Max Freed. The guy is six and oh
he should be ten? And oh is Aaron run averages
one point twenty nine. Man, if they had to vote
for the cy Young, he would win it right now.
So last night he takes him out of a two
to two game, which the Yanks one eight to two.

(21:38):
Two other games he took him out of. You allowed only
one run in each game, and then the opener, he
took him out after four and two thirds. One more
out and he gets a win. Let him pitch man.
He may be the best pitcher in baseball. Change the role.
The three point shot has made a joke of the game.

(21:58):
In the nickt Celtics six game series, the Celtics took
two hundred seventy seven three pointers, they made only ninety seven.
The Knicks. Yeah, and the Knicks took two hundred and
two three pointers, they made only seventy one. That means

(22:19):
the Celtics and the Knicks missed three hundred eleven three
pointers combined. I'm saying, change a rule.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Absolutely. Just imagine what would Michael Jordan do in the
game right now? The excitement about was, Yeah, it was
flying through the air to dunk the ball.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
Yeah. I would look at the Jerry West and Oscar Robertson.
I mean all those long shots were only two points.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Yeah, yeah, you're right, You're right, Pete. They always talk
about how how many more points Pete Maravich would have
had because he he could shoot way out there.

Speaker 4 (23:00):
So I'm saying, instead of the current twenty three feet
nine inches and twenty two feet from the corner, change
it to thirty feet around the arc. The twenty two
foot shot would have become a two point shot like
it used to be. So I'm saying, put the basketball

(23:21):
back in the basketball, move the ball around, bring back
the emphasis on the midrage jumper. Wow, stop the game
from just being three pointers and dunks. I think it's
hurt the game.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
Well said, give yourself a bet. Yeah, Bill, there you go.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
Now the NFL schedule released last week. What a difference
a year makes. After showcasing Aaron Rodgers and the Jets
last year, the Jets have only two primetime games out
of seventeen, and apparently nobody wants to see the Giants

(24:01):
and Russell Wilson except for Giants fans. They only have
three primetime games out of seventeen. But don't feel too
bad that Titans, Browns, and Saints have no time. No
primetime games wow, And the Jags and Panthers have only
one and the schedule makers, man, it didn't do the

(24:25):
Giants any favored. The Giants play the Chiefs, the forty
nine Ers, the Packers, the Lions, the Vikings Chargers, and
get this, they play the Eagles twice within three weeks.

Speaker 9 (24:39):
That's a terrible.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
Schedule, all right. So who should the Hall of Fame
committee now vote into the Hall of Fame now that
baseball reinstated sixteen players? Well, of course Pete Rose, and
especially now with even baseball telecasts and voting ads for

(25:00):
betting and bookies and casinos. That should be a no brainer.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
First batle guy, what a first ballot for Pete Rose?

Speaker 4 (25:10):
It should be. I don't see why not. He didn't
cheat the game like Bonds and a Rod and Clemens
and others, they cheated the game. Rose didn't shoat the game.
He just bet on the Reds to win. And now
with all his betting, I mean, it's kind of hypocritical

(25:32):
if he doesn't. And those eight White Sox players nineteen
nineteen banned from the series. Joe Jackson hit three seventy
five in the series with no eras he should get in.
And the third baseman, Buck Weaver, almost a three hundred hitter.

(25:54):
He didn't take part in the fix, but he was
banned because he refused to report the bribe. So I
think those two from the White Sox situation, the other
six are not going to get in the first basement.
Chick Gandle, he's the one that took in the gamblers.

(26:16):
That's who the gamblers got to. Then you had this
reserve third baseman, Fred McMullen. He told his teammates, cut
me in on the deal, or I'll squeal, he's not
getting in. And then the shortstop Swede Risberg, here's a
pretty good hitter. You know what he hit in the

(26:37):
World Series point zero eighty Wow. And the last guy's
not going to get in. Lefty Williams was a twenty
three game winner. He suddenly went oher to three with
an run average of six point sixty one. So they
ain't getting in man all right. Time Now for the

(26:59):
three stooges. All right, we've got two lying stooges and
a dumb ass stooge. The first lying stooge, The first
lying stooge Iran UN speaker Ali Reza miro Sufi, who
says Iran's nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Peaceful purposes,

(27:23):
then why keep out the nuclear inspectors if you have
nothing to hide, Man, don't do what the rest of
the world did in the nineteen thirties, just sat back
and watched as Hitler built up the military for Germany
despite the vers Ill Treaty, which banned the military for Germany.
Stooge number two at liar number one former FBI director

(27:48):
James Comy, who was questioned and testified questioned by the
Secret Service last Friday, and said he just happened to
find a bunch of seashells in the sand while he
was walking along the beach of his vacation home in
May and that spelled out the numbers eighty six and

(28:13):
you know eighty We used to say, hey, eighty six,
the guys, you get rid of him? And forty seven,
which happens to be President Trump, the forty seven president
of the United States. Komy took a photo of eighty
six forty seven and put it on Instagram. You know,
Comy was the head of the FBI and he didn't

(28:35):
know what eighty six forty seven stood for. On then,
and the third stooge of the week, Anni Semitic Zoram Mandanny,
who was running for mayor of New York City. First
he wouldn't sign Israel's right to exist on the seventy

seventh anniversary becoming a state, and then he refused to
recognize the Holocaust. Hey, dumb ass man, Donnie, you ever
heard of the Nuremberg Trials? If there was no Holocaust
murdering six million Jews and five million non Jews, where
did the eleven million people go?

Speaker 1 (29:19):
Excellent, very good, Warner Warner Wolf legendary sportscaster with his
commentary at the end, which was perfect. Up next, we'll
get the latest on the investigation into the Mexican tall
ship that crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge from WR correspondent
Rory O'Neill. Well, thanks so much for your talkbacks. You've
been talking a lot today about the Mexican tall ship

(29:42):
that ran into the Brooklyn Bridge. Yeah, Dave here in Laura, Manhattan.

Speaker 8 (29:46):
Chucky Schuimer's up to his old tricks again, this accident
with this Mexican tall ship smacking into the Brooklyn Bridge. Yeah,
he turned that into he had a press conference and
he turns it into was screened against Trump and how
him cut the coast guard and stuff and somehow this
accident was Trump's fault and this and that, and guy's

(30:07):
just a real low life.

Speaker 7 (30:09):
You know.

Speaker 8 (30:10):
I hope it gets replaced not by AOC, but so
somebody better.

Speaker 1 (30:14):
Yeah. The Coastguard, by the way, has come out and
denied that. So Chuck Schumer again looking bad on the
public stage. Now let's get the Rory O'Neil WLR national
correspondent who has been covering the accident at the Brooklyn Bridge.
Rory what's the latest.

Speaker 5 (30:32):
Well, we're expecting an update from that go team that
was dispatched to the scene after the accident Saturday night,
so we'll probably get some information, but I'm just going
to warn you to lower your expectations when the NTSB
does these emergency responses. Typically the initial press conferences.

Speaker 1 (30:50):
Who, what, where and when?

Speaker 5 (30:52):
The why is still going to be some time off.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
So what do we know so far about ex exactly
what happened?

Speaker 5 (31:01):
Yeah, we know that the ship was on its way out.
It was supposed to be leaving Peer seventeen on a
trip to Iceland when for some reason, it started going backwards.
Now we've heard everything from power failures to rudder issues
a combination of the two. But if you haven't seen
close up video, you may not realize that the whole
crew was up there in the rigging among the masts

(31:23):
and yard arms, essentially for a big showy display. As
they left. You know, the full Mexican flag was unfroled
out back. This was supposed to be the grand departure
for the ship that had arrived there at Peer seventeen
back on May thirteenth, So this was supposed to be
a festivication as this training ship was on its way
to Iceland.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
There are so many questions. We've been getting them from
listeners all day. You know, where was the Coast Guard
in all of this? Why weren't there tug boats that
were out there to help them? Why they didn't just
drop anchor. I guess that some of them may get
in through a little bit later this morning from the
go team.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Well right, and especially those questions about the anchor. In
the video you can see there's a tugboat nearby. What
was its assignment? Was it supposed to be escorting that
sailing vessel? Those are all still unknown questions. And you know,
I know it's a big old It looks like a
big old sailing ship from a few centuries ago, But

(32:23):
this ship was actually built in nineteen eighty two, and
it's got design plans that are very similar to the
ship plans for the Eagle, that's the US Coast Guards
version of this kind of bark, and it was built.
It was built centuries ago, and we've took it as
war spoils from Germany. That's another whole story. But hopefully

(32:46):
with the three masts that were broken here, they can
ultimately be repaired because it's a relatively new ship compared
to many of its compatriots out there.

Speaker 1 (32:55):
Explained, can you get an explanation of the men and
women that were up on the mast when they were
going towards this bridge? Was just that? Was that just
for show?

Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yes, it was pretty much you know, well, think of
it today when there's an aircraft carrier that comes or goes.
You can see the sailors all lined up at the
very edge of the runway as the ships are pulling
into port, same kind of thing that's been done for centuries.
That the crew will scramble up the masts and go
out to the end of the yard arms and just
stand there, typically with their hands behind their backs or

(33:25):
holding on to whatever they can hold on to. And
that was one of the complications because after Saturday night's collision,
several people got caught up in some of that rigging
and the sails, and it took almost a half an
hour to get some of them down because they were
so strung up there among those those ropes and sails.
So it's a pretty complicated system. Again, this is why

(33:48):
it's a training vessel to give some of that old
maritime training. But these ships also act as ambassadors good
willed ships that go all around the world their recruitment platforms.
And you know, you've seen these ships come up into
New York Harbor so many times for those big events
like we saw in the content ealand like we'll probably
see in the next year.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
But I haven't seen them all lined up in the
mass like that. Rory O'Neil, thank you so much. WR
National Correspondent. Let's get the news at eight o'clock.
