Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to KFI AM six forty on demand.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
This is Michael Monks Reports Michael Monks from KFI News
with you live on this Saturday night in southern California. Hello,
is this thing on?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Hello?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Can you hear me out there?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Or is everybody tuned into the Dodgers game on our
sister station, A five seventy LA's Sports.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
If you're not, don't worry.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
There's still plenty of news to talk about, and that
is exactly what we're going to have in store. And
it just so happens that the Dodgers and the Blue
Jays in Game two of the World Series right now
are making news international news. In fact, this World Series game,
this series is affecting international trade and we're gonna get

(00:48):
into that a little bit tonight because we're basically in
a trade war now. That was prompted by the fact
that an American team is playing a Canadian team and
a little commercial that was produced by a government out
of Canada. It is really ticked off President Trump and

(01:09):
now there may be more tariffs. So we're gonna talk
a bit about that tonight. So if you are listening
to the news tonight, we're glad to hear from you,
and you can always share your thoughts on everything we're
talking about by opening up the iHeartRadio app and clicking
on that talkback button. We'll play some of your comments
about everything we talk about tonight as we go through
the show. And we do have a lot to talk about.

(01:31):
Not the least of wish is the World Series. Of course,
the Dodgers got beat up pretty badly last night eleven
to two. I was driving around last night and Hollywood
and Koreatown back to Downtown, listening to the game, flipping
back and forth between five to seventy and listening to
Andy Reesmeyer here on KFI, and boy, that's sixth inning
just would not end Toronto, really laying it on the

(01:54):
Dodgers in a butt whooping fashion. And then earlier today
the UCLA Bruins, the football team which had been surging
after a very bad start owen Vour head coach fired.
They got a little mojo, put an interim coach in place,
I got some other coaches getting a lot of attention,
won three in a row. Then they headed off the Bloomington,

(02:15):
Indiana today, and boy, they got sent back to Los
Angeles with their head between their legs fifty six to six.
Number two ranked Indiana defeated the Bruins today.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
So it was a.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Rough span of about thirty six, well not even thirty six,
twenty four hours or so twelve hours for LA sports fans.
Dodgers getting whipped in Toronto, Bruins getting whipped in Indiana.
But the Dodgers right now appear to have turned a
corner here in Game two. They've shaken off the dust
Yamamoto on the mound three to one. Right now, the

(02:52):
Dodgers lead heading into the top of the eighth, so
that's a good position to be in, but it's still
a couple of innings to go. Toronto will bat lasts
as they are the home team, and then of course
the series comes west regardless, so we'll have some Dodgers
action here now, as is tradition, kind of a weird
tradition in sports, especially with the news that came out

(03:15):
of the NBA this week and the FBI and the
investigation into some illegal gambling. Local officials in whatever market
is competing in the championship like to make these friendly
little wagers, and that has certainly happened.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
As the Dodgers take on the Blue Jays.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
So we do have three bets to talk about, involving
local officials here and officials in Canada and Ontario, and
so here's where we are. The police chiefs have also bet,
and Police Chief Jim McDonald here at the LAPD and
Toronto Police Chief Myron Dimq have bet that the loser

(03:56):
has to post a photo of themselves wearing the opposite
team's jersey.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Hey, Chief TEMPQ, I hear Toronto's feeling bold and I
respect that. But when it comes to October baseball, the
Dodgers don't play around.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
So here's the deal.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
When our Dodgers win the World Series, you'll be the
one wearing a Dodger's jersey like the one here while
taking a photo and congratulating the city of Los Angeles.
And once we bring home the trophy, you can always
go back to this and of course go Dodgers.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
Hey chief, back to now, when the Toronto Blue Jays
winning World Series, I want to see you wearing this
jersey and I want to see your post a photo
online celebrating our win here in Toronto. Go Jays go.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Little disrespect there on.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Chief Jim McDonald as Toronto Police Chief, dim Q called
him Chief McDonnell. Not a bad pronunciation, I suppose it
a little more exotic.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Mere Bass is also in a the action.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
She has made a wager against the mayor of Toronto
and they are also getting the jerseys involved. So Mayor
Bass says to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, whichever team loses,
that losing mayor has to put on the jersey of

(05:21):
the winning team and bike the number of miles that
equal the number of runs scored by the winning team
in the final game. Mayor Bass posted a photo on
social media with a Dodger bobblehead and a Dodger jersey,
and then Mayor Chow responded.

Speaker 6 (05:39):
Last night there was on the phone with the Mayor
of La Karen Bass, and she issued a bet East
versus West Kansas team. Of course, I won't dodge a bet,
but in the sphere of good sportsmanship, we're focusing on
what we have in common with both cyclists and competitive
So the terms off the bet are simple, the losing mayor,

(06:02):
where's the other team's jersey? And bitd the number of
winning runs in miles.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Now I will accept.

Speaker 6 (06:11):
Kilometers because I'm confident in our team. Bet Mayor Bass
and go Chase.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
That's Toronto Mayor Chow agreeing to the bet with La
Mayor Bass. But there was one bet that is now
in a way, been heard around the world. It's not
exactly the video that has reignited a trade war between
these two neighbors, these two longtime allies, the United States
and Canada, but California Governor Gavin Newsom and Ontario Premiere

(06:44):
Ford had a friendly bet as well and made sure
to mix politics with that bet.

Speaker 7 (06:51):
Hi, Governor Newsome, it's official. The Blue Jays are heading
to the World Series to take on You're Los Angeles Dodgers.

Speaker 8 (07:00):
That's right, Premiere. Two great teams, two proud places. Sounds
like a perfect time for a friendly wager.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
Okay, Governor, you're on. If the Blue Jays win, I'll
send you some of Ontario's finest maple syrup and a
proper can can the way it's meant to be enjoyed.
The tariff might cost me a few extra bucks at
the border these days, but it'll be worth it for
a Jay's win.

Speaker 8 (07:22):
That's a switet offer, Premiere. But something tells me that
syrup is staying north of the border when the Dodgers win,
and when they do, I'll send you a bottle of
California's championship worthy wine. And hey, can you do me
a favorite? Think you can put it on the liquor
store shelves.

Speaker 7 (07:37):
I don't think so, buddy. Talk to your friend in
the Oval office. I can't wait for the Jays to
bring it home. Either way, it's a win win, great neighbors,
great friends, and a little cross border competition.

Speaker 9 (07:52):
We could agree more.

Speaker 8 (07:52):
Here's the great baseball and some friendly bragging rights Go Jays.
As a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, Go Doude. He's
tariff friendship between Ontario and Galifornia.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
So tariffs made their way into the bet between Governor
Newsom and Premier Ford. And tariffs are also playing another
role in this game because the government of Ontario has
released an advertisement against tariffs and that is not sitting
well with President Trump. Will get into that next. We'll
play part of that ad. They invoke the words of

(08:30):
one President Ronald Reagan, who spoke against the widespread or
reckless use of tariffs. President Trump says that was either
taken out of context or faked completely. And now he
says he plans to hike tariffs on Canada, and both
the President and the Prime Minister of Canada are off

(08:50):
to Asia to have this international group world leaders meeting.
They're supposed to meet. Trump says he's not so sure
that's going to happen. This thing got ugly. We're going
to dive into that next. But we've got a lot
more than that to get into today. There's a new
fire chief in Los Angeles and the city still faces
litigation because of the wildfire back in January in the Palisades,

(09:13):
and there was a vote at city hall this week
about upping the amount of money they're paying an outside
law firm to defend against some claims related to that,
and Boyle boy it looked like nobody on the city
council had any idea what was going on with this.
We're going to play some clips from that meeting to
show how unorganized that whole situation appears to be going.

(09:33):
We'll also talk a bit about an investigation that Mayor
Bass and Congressman Robert Garcia, a Democrat from Long Beach,
have called for involving federal immigration agents here in southern California.
We've got two hours together on this Saturday night. If
you're not watching the game, thanks for spending it with us.
We got a lot to get to and we'll do
just that.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
You're listening to KFI AM six forty on demand.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
This is Michael Monks Reports on Michael Monks from KFI
News with you until nine o'clock on this Saturday night
in southern California. The Dodgers have added a couple more
runs in the top of the eighth and now lead
Toronto five to one. They're headed to the bottom of
the eighth now a couple innings left for the Blue
Jays to get.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Back in this.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Otherwise, if the Dodgers win, they'll come to LA with
the series tied one to one. Will continue to monitor.
I know if you're listening to us, you're either not
interested or just passively interested in this game. If you
are missing the game, it is of course playing on
our sister station, AM five seventy LA Sports. But we
will give you little updates throughout the night until that

(10:39):
game is over. I know we'll all be excited for
the World Series to return to Los Angeles next week. Meanwhile,
an ad that ran and we'll continue to run for
at least tonight on behalf of the Ontario government has
really upset President Trump. It uses the words from President

(11:00):
Reagan against the use of tariffs. Here are some parts
of that advertisement.

Speaker 10 (11:06):
When someone says, let's impose tariffs on foreign imports, it
looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American
products and jobs. And sometimes for a short violet works,
but only for a short time. But over the long run,
such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer. Throughout

(11:28):
the world, there's a growing realization that the weight of
prosperity for aign nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting
fair and free competition. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation
by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
So President Trump did not like that he posted online.
Their advertisement was to be taken down immediately, but they
let it run last night during the World Series, knowing
that it was a fraud because of their serious misrepresentation
of the facts and hostile eye act. I am increasing
the tariff on Canada by ten percent over and above
what they are paying now. So here's some more from

(12:08):
President Trump's reactions, as well as Trump administration officials and
some reporting on what has transpired since the release of
that ad by the Ontario government.

Speaker 11 (12:19):
Canada got caught cheating on a commercial.

Speaker 12 (12:21):
Did you believe it?

Speaker 11 (12:23):
Ronald Reagan loved tariffs and they said he didn't and
I guess it was AI or so they cheated badly.

Speaker 13 (12:31):
President Trump has abruptly ended trained negotiations with Canada. He
says he's angry over a TV ad airing in Canada
that used the voice of Ronald Reagan to criticize tariffs.
Trump accuses Canada trying to interfere with the Supreme Court,
which is considering whether his tariffs are legal.

Speaker 11 (12:48):
We have a deal right now that's very good for US.
Any deal that would have been made that would have
been better for them than the one they have right now.

Speaker 14 (12:56):
The White House is saying that President Trump will meet
with Canadian Prime Mark Carney here in Asia this week,
but President Trump is saying that for now that's not happening.
This comes after Trump declared he's ending all trade talks
with Canada, furious over an ad from Ontario Province that
uses audio from former President Ronald Reagan where he criticizes

(13:16):
tariffs for driving up prices and job losses.

Speaker 11 (13:19):
I just as soon believe it the way it is,
believe it the way it is. It's very good for us.

Speaker 15 (13:24):
The Canadians have been very difficult to negotiate with, and
you look at all the countries around the world that
we've made deals with, and the fact that we're now
negotiating with Mexico separately reveals that it's not just about
what one ad that there's frustration that's built up.

Speaker 11 (13:42):
I'm satisfied with the deal we have. We have a
deal right now that's very good for us, and any
deal that would have been made it would have been
better for them than the one they.

Speaker 9 (13:51):
Have right now.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
Canada's Prime Minister, sounding resigned.

Speaker 16 (13:55):
We can't control the trade policy of the United States.

Speaker 17 (13:58):
Trump's tariffs are now beginning to effect the prices we
pay for everything from furniture to close to groceries. A
new government report shows inflation is picking up, prices increasing
three percent from last year. The typical American household is
now spending an extra two hundred eight dollars per month.

Speaker 16 (14:15):
But we can also control, or at least heavily influenced.
Is developing new partnerships and opportunities including with the economic
giants of Asia, which is the focus.

Speaker 10 (14:26):
Of this trip.

Speaker 18 (14:28):
They're going to continue airing this ad through the weekend
because of the World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays are.

Speaker 12 (14:34):
Playing the Los Angeles.

Speaker 18 (14:35):
Dodgers in the World Series, so that could be a
potential significant number of eyeballs that we'll be seeing this,
But the statement from the Ontario government says they will
pull it starting on Monday so trade talks can resume.

Speaker 16 (14:48):
We stand ready to pick up on that progress and
build on that progress when the Americans are ready to
have those discussions.

Speaker 18 (14:58):
The Reagan Foundation the Live Ray has said that this
is misrepresenting what this speech was, but it does match
the audio and the transcript of what the President then
said at the time about tariffs, talking about how this
could lead to job losses and tough times for the economy.

Speaker 16 (15:14):
For months, we have stressed the importance of distinguishing things
we can control and things we can't control. We can't
control the trade policy of the United States. This decade's
long process of an ever closer economic relationship with the
United States.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Is now over. Is now over.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
That's Prime Minister Mark Karney, who is at the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations Nation Summit in Malaysia, a scene
they call it, and President Trump is there too. Now
they were supposed to apparently meet, but now Trump has
told reporters that we're traveling with him that he's got
no intention of meeting Prime Minister Carney there. So there

(15:57):
you go, and add that is run during the World
Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto
Blue Jays has gone global. It is affecting international trade.
It is really upset to the President and he has
taken action, and we'll continue to monitor because more tariffs
on Canada means prices could go up on things that

(16:18):
we get from them, and it's a major trading partner
for the United States.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
Dodgers up five to one.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
As we head to the top of the ninth inning
in Toronto, we'll see if they can hold on to
that lead and bring the series back. Even as the
two squads come to Los Angeles to continue the series
up next, President Trump threatened to send more military into
San Francisco, just like he did in Los Angeles earlier
this summer.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Then he backed off on that.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
Meanwhile, here in Southern California, Congressman Robert Garcia, a Democrat
from Long Beach, and Mayor Karen Bass have called for
an investigation by the House Oversight Committee in two federal
immigration agent's efforts.

Speaker 6 (16:58):
Here.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
We'll get into both of those things coming up next,
as Michael Monks Reports continues.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Here, you're listening to KFI Am six forty on demand.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
This is Michael Monks Reports.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
I'm Michael Monks from KFI News with you live on
this Saturday night in southern California, talking about the news.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Thank you for listening. We do believe some people are listening.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
At least Bill Is he's weighed in on the Trump
Canada tariff situation.

Speaker 9 (17:29):
Hey, Michael Monks regarding the supposed video by Ronald Reagan,
I don't even know if that's legit or not, but
if it is, Reagan was talking in the nineteen eighties
and it was a totally different economic landscape worldwide in
the nineteen eighties because China was not a major player.
We were the major exporter. And the world is a

(17:51):
different place now and to get a level playing field,
I think Trump is smart to use tariffs.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
Thank you, Bill.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
We appreciate you taking the time to call in by
opening up the iHeartRadio app and clicking on that talk
back button. All the rest of you are welcome to
do the same, even if you just want to let
us know you are listening, and then we're not just
shouting in the void. We're not the only ones who
aren't just sitting and watching the Dodgers, who, by the way,
are up five to one in the top of the ninth.
Two outs Dodgers are batting right now. Will continue to

(18:20):
monitor and keep an eye on this situation. Looks like
the third out has just been made by Toronto to
send this game to the bottom of the ninth, so
the Blue Jays will hope for a miracle. After drubbing
the Dodgers last night, LA leads five to one over
Toronto heading into the bottom of the ninth. We'll see
if that holds up, and of course, the series comes

(18:42):
to LA starting next week. We'll all look forward to that. Meanwhile,
President Trump has said he was canceling an immigration enforcement
surge in San Francisco after friends of his called him
and then the mayor there, Mayor Lurie, convinced Trump that
progress is being made on the city and its situation

(19:03):
involving crime and other issues.

Speaker 19 (19:06):
When President Trump assured San Francisco's mayor that he was
calling off plans for now to send a surge of
federal agency and it wasn't clear if the President meant
only in San Francisco or the entire Bay Area region.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Agents have been in the area.

Speaker 19 (19:19):
They've been amassing at a Coast Guard base in Alameda,
across the Bay from San Francisco, But now the Alameda
County Sheriff's Southa says it has been told by the
Trump administration the entire operation Bay Area wide in the
region has been called off by the President.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
Alex Stone Ebcinas Now.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
The National Guard did come to Los Angeles earlier in
the summer to help with some of the protests that
had been taking place against federal immigration enforcement. They mostly
just protected federal buildings, that was their task, but Governor
Newsom was not happy about their presence here and local
officials were not happy about their presence here. Now there

(20:01):
is more anger for local officials about federal immigration enforcement efforts.
Earlier this week, La Mayor Bass and Democratic Congressman Robert
Garcia from Long Beach calling for a congressional investigation. They
have described federal immigration agents' actions as unlawful and unconstitutional.
They say they have detained citizens and immigrants without a

(20:24):
judicial warrant or a probable cause. Now, Congressman Garcia serves
on the House Oversight Committee. Of course, the Republicans are
in charge of the House, so they tend to have
control over these committees as well. But Congressman Garcia thinks
that he can force some hearings, and he would do
so here in Los Angeles. Here are some remarks from

(20:45):
Congressman Garcia and Mayor Karen Bass.

Speaker 20 (20:48):
And so today I want to announce that the House
Oversight Committee Democrats are going to record and create an
investigative unit here to ensure that in Los Angeles we
look into every single brutal misconduct.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
That ICE is committed.

Speaker 20 (21:03):
We know that right now Donald Trump and Christineum are
terrorizing immigrants, working people, the people of Los Angeles and
of our state. Every single day. They violate the law
and they violate the constitution. Over one hundred and seventy
citizens are being arrested. Why because they look like me,

(21:25):
because they are of Latino origin. We know that right
now in these detention facilities, a majority of the people
that are being detained have not committed a crime. We're
beholding the very first hearing from Oversight and the Senate
here in Los Angeles when we win the majority and

(21:47):
have the power to subpoena and have the power to
get any document, have the ability to bring anyone forward
to our committee. We are not just only going to
hold Christineum and Stephen Miller what they've done.

Speaker 21 (22:01):
We said at that time that LA was being used
as the laboratory and that the egregious, unconstitutional behavior from
our federal government was going to start here and spread
around the country. Who in Los Angeles are Angelinos?

Speaker 3 (22:17):
Because we don't make the distinction.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
That last remark you heard from the mayor was in
reference to illegal immigrant. She says she does not make
a distinction between those who are here illegally and natural
or American residents who are here in LA. No distinction
whatsoever between the two. And you also heard Congressman Garcia
say when Democrats retake the House, they will be able
to request all the documents they want, subpoena folks that

(22:43):
they want, and you can bet that if Democrats take
the House that will happen. One key element to the
Democrats retaking the House could be whether voters in California
pass Proposition fifty in a couple of weeks, Wish will
redraw California's congressional districts, likely to favor more Democrats being

(23:05):
elected here. There is new polling showing that that is
very likely to happen. But it's not all bad news
for Republicans in the state wide races next year. We'll
get into that in the next hour, but in the meantime,
we'll keep an eye on this possible House Oversight Committee
investigation into federal immigration agents actions. Congressman Garcia, who is

(23:29):
the ranking Democratic member on the committee, says he will
hold hearings here in La. It was not just Congressman
Garcia and Mayor Bass who were in support of this.
La City Council members Unices Hernandez, Isabelle Herrado, and Hugo
Soto Martinez. We're all there at city Hall for this
press conference. A councilwoman, Hernandez says, Angelino's are being beaten, terrorized,

(23:51):
and detained without due process. She says, we must fight
to keep democracy alive and hold federal immigration enforcement account
for every abuse. Coming up next, we've got a new
fire chief in Los Angeles. We're going to hear from him.
He has a message for the people of Los Angeles,

(24:13):
especially those who feel that the fire department may have
let them down back in January when the wildfire broke
out in the Palisades. But because of that fire in
the Palisades, the City of Los Angeles is facing litigation
and people are obviously going to sue over the city's response.
The City Attorney's office is not handling all of this

(24:36):
litigation on its own. City council has to pay money
for outside law firms to come in, and these things
are not cheap. They do the same thing with litigation
related to homelessness, for example. They've just had to up
their budget millions to cover that tab.

Speaker 10 (24:54):
Well.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
The city Council this week was asked to increase the
budget for one private law firm by seven one hundred
and fifty thousand dollars. It seemed to be a routine
ask until a couple council members read the fine print
and said, wait a second, wait a second, and then
all the proceedings came to a halt. We'll get into

(25:17):
that confusion next as well. As Michael Monks reports continues.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
You're listening to KFI AM six forty on demand.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
This is Michael Monks Reports on Michael Monks from KFI
News with you till nine o'clock on this Saturday night
in southern California. And it's official that Dodgers have wrapped
up the Blue Jays. Five to one is the final
in Game two of the World Series. So La and
Toronto will come to LA for Game three with the
series tied one to one. Mathematically, this means the Dodgers

(25:52):
could win the World Series here in LA if they
win the next three games. Those games are scheduled Monday
and Tuesday and Wednesday right here in Los Angeles, all
of them starting at five o'clock. You can hear all
the Dodgers games on our sister station, AM five seventy
LA Sports. You know, last year when the Dodgers won,

(26:15):
it was the first Dodgers World Series victory that I
got to experience as a resident of Los Angeles, as
a resident of downtown Los Angeles, and it almost makes
me want to root against the Dodgers. I'm sorry say,
because it got crazy down there riotus. A metro bus
was set on fire. I don't know what that has
to do with celebrating a World Series victory, and I

(26:37):
don't know why they choose my already downtrodden neighborhood to
do it. I'm hoping that if the Dodgers do pull
it off again this year, that folks are a little
little better behaved. Our phone lines are open through the
iHeartRadio talkback application. Just open up the app, click on
the talkback button, and we will play some of your comments.

(26:57):
Lisa has something to say on President Trump in the
trade war with Canada.

Speaker 22 (27:03):
This is Lisa from Brentwood, Tennessee, and I do like
President Trump, but he is wearing me out. He's not
aven been president a year, and I feel like he's
been in office for seven. In fact, I feel he's
aging us in dog years and by the time he's through,
we will mentally be fatagued and worn out and twenty
eight years older.

Speaker 2 (27:27):
Lisa, I can tell you you probably didn't even have
to tell as you were from Tennessee. That sounded like
Tennessee in the background, and we do appreciate you taking
the time to listen and to call in. I do
have to say, if you're a Valls fan, I'm a
little upset because Tennessee is really kicking Kentucky's butt right
now fifty six to twenty seven in Lexington. I know
nobody else cares about that, but as a long suffering

(27:48):
Kentucky Wildcats fan, it is it's rough to do this
show on Saturdays. When you get your hopes of that,
maybe maybe they'll turn a corner. All of you out
there who support teams that just consistently disappoint you, you
know exactly what I mean. Open up the iHeartRadio app,

(28:10):
on the talkback button. Los Angeles has a new fire chief.
LA Mayor Bass has announced a thirty year veteran of
the fire department. His name is HAIMI Moore. Here's what
he has to say.

Speaker 23 (28:19):
As your next chief, I will work to implement strategic
changes that reflect what the department needs and what Angelinos deserve.
Those changes include preparation for major disasters, including pre deployment
and staffing, preparation for upcoming world events like the World Cup,

(28:44):
the Super Bowl, and twenty twenty eight Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Improving morale and the culture within the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Ensuring our department is equipped with the essential resources, staffing,
and the support that is needed.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Increasing innovation, adoption of.

Speaker 23 (29:10):
Technology and the use of data to keep Los Angeles
safe and to the people of Los Angeles. The Los
Angeles Fire Department belongs to you. I know this last
year has tested all of us, but I know Angelinos

(29:30):
are resilient and strong. I see it every day on
the job, and I will lead with this same spirit.

Speaker 7 (29:40):
As your next chief.

Speaker 23 (29:41):
I'm determined to ensure that a LAFD always keeps improving
and that the LAFD will uphold our duty to keep
you safe.

Speaker 2 (29:52):
That's new LAFD Chief Heimi Moore, who beat out interim
Chief Ronnie Vianueva for the permanent position. Of course, Vinueva
was appointed after Mayor Baths fired former Chief Kristin Crowley
over the response to the Pacific Palisades wildfire in January.

Speaker 3 (30:09):
Meanwhile, at City Hall this week, the.

Speaker 2 (30:12):
City Council was considering boosting the budget that they pay
out to a private law firm to the tune of
seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars to help defend them. Now,
it looked like at the beginning of this meeting when
they took up this item, that the council members assumed
that this was going to be paid for by the
LA Department of Water and Power.

Speaker 24 (30:32):
Council Member Ramen.

Speaker 18 (30:33):
My question about this, which I just want to clarify,
this is coming from d towp's.

Speaker 12 (30:37):
Funding, right, nobody knows counselor Mike Dundasty the Attorney's office, No,
this would be general fund money.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Okay, everyone's confused. That's not what it says in the report.

Speaker 14 (30:49):
That's why this is confusing to us.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
Confused and you look at this murmuring.

Speaker 12 (30:57):
The report I think described it. I mean, if you'd
like to discuss what we can talk about it in
closed session, I would recommend.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Okay, So the city Attorney's office recommends, what don't we
go to closed session and talk about why the language
has changed? What do he explains is in clos session
means the public can't hear what they're talking about, and
you're allowed to do that if it involves legal proceedings,
real estate purchases, or personnel related matters. So that's what
they did for us for a while, and then they

(31:24):
came back out and it did.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
Not go well. And I'll just just editorial size, Council
President Marquis.

Speaker 24 (31:31):
Sound is the same, but the source of the dollars
is different, which causes a dramatic difference. And you know,
I just want to say, on the public record, Uh,
we got both a report and emotion that identified these
funds as coming back from coming from DWP. As Council
Member Rahman pointed out before we went into closed session,

(31:52):
we got a request after the motion had already been
brought before the Council for this additional language from the
City Attorney's office. Yes, so I just want to one say,
two members, there is understandable consternation on this. We should
I don't understand why this was not known when we

(32:13):
first got when the report was issued, and then when
the motion was introduced. I don't understand why this wasn't
known until literally the last hour. But that's where we are.
All right, let's open on the role on this item
as amended, close the role, tabulate.

Speaker 10 (32:31):
The vote seven ie five nos.

Speaker 24 (32:34):
All right, this motion fails, mister President.

Speaker 14 (32:37):
This item will be held over to Friday, October twenty four,
twenty twenty five person into the count rules.

Speaker 24 (32:45):
All right, what's next?

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Okay, So what's next is after that motion failed by
a vote of seven to five, because you need at
least eight on most things, and there were some members
who were absent, they were not able to get that.
So there were seven in favor of this seven hundred
and fifty thousand dollars payment from the city's general fund
to the law firm Munger, Tullis and Olsen for legal
services related to the wildfire litigation.

Speaker 3 (33:10):
But then there were five opposed.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
They were supposed to hear it again on Friday yesterday,
it got pushed to next week, and I think that's
because other members were absent again and they knew they
would not have the votes. So this situation lives on.
But you get a little view into city Hall and
how confused even members of city Council can be over
the day to day operations the City of Los Angeles.

(33:36):
All right, that finishes up hour one, But we've got
a whole other hour together on this Saturday night. I
hope you'll stay with us. We're celebrating a Dodger's victory
as they even up the series ahead of their return
to Los Angeles with the Blue Jays in tow for
Game three on Monday, and in our next hour, we'll
talk about some very serious situations facing food stamp recipients

(33:58):
in Los Angeles County and ross California. It's not good news,
and a question, does Mayor Bass know where Los Angeles
Downtown Los Angeles is? She spoke to some residents and
I was pretty shocked by some of her answers. We're
going to play some of those for you in our
next hour as Michael Monks Reports continues
