(00:05):
Hey, Cheryl, Paul Allen, how you doing. Congratulations on the victory
last night, Cheryl Reeve. I'msorry, Pia, I forget to lift
you off. Wow. I mean, that's about the worst thing a racetrack
announcer, a play by play voice, or a radio show host could hear.
(00:26):
Pa, I'm sorry, but Ihave to take you off on the
way. That actually would be mutingyour ear. But you understand what I'm
saying. No, that's okay,And I put you on that buttercake tw
too. I mean I'll quickly theyforget all right? Three two? Cheryl
Okay, hold on all right?Three two. Cheryl Reeve, coach of
the Minnesota Links Red Hot and alsopresident of basketball operations, joins nine to
(00:50):
noon. Now, congratulations on thevictory last night. You get the money
for a second consecutive game without yourbest player. What'd you like about the
win last night? Well, welove the collective, you know, That's
what we talked about. It's reallybeen the strength of our team all season.
But it becomes even more important,as you mentioned, without Kyle,
you're and everybody just do a littlebit more. Doesn't have to be any
(01:12):
one player, try to play outsideof themselves and be extraordinary. It's just
the collective and we've got good playersthat now their number is being called,
you know, to play a littlemore, do a little more. And
they responded to that, I thoughtvery well. I thought we defended at
a high level, which we haveto do on the road. So they
really brought, they bought into thatend for sure. Why and maybe I'm
(01:36):
missing something here, Cheryl, Butwhy are there? Why are all the
games in the day today? Imean, you got Liberty and Connectic get
fifty three fifty one late in thethird quarter, Washington and your favorite team,
the Fever. They're underway at theend of the first mystics lead Kate,
excuse me, the Fever twenty sixseventeen. Wow, Atlanta and Angel
(01:57):
Raese they're underway. Why why everythingin the day today? Well, it's
just and I'm sure it's very mucha coincidence, but we are in a
day game season, as schools areout, et cetera. It's always been
a big, big game in ourleague with regard to you know, call
it camp day, you know, kids day, whatever you want to call
it. But that's what you seetoday is I think that's pretty uncommon I
(02:21):
don't know that I've seen that tohave this many games be that particular day.
So on the West Coast, it'seight am, nine am the game
started, So we were excited. You know, we get we get a
chance to see it before we traveltoday. But that's what you see.
Our day game is next Wednesday.Well we'll play at noon, and so
that's that's kind of what you see. That's that's the uh, you know,
(02:42):
that's the part of the season. It is for us. I got
it. Eighty two sixty seven, they get the money. Last night,
twenty nine to sixteen. Y'all scoredthem in the first quarter. I mean,
hanging a thirty in a quarter isfantastic, but one two you had
nine different players scoring the first quarter, didn't you We did? We did,
And that's why I say I reallyliked how we came out in the
game. You know, we reallytalked about setting the tone in the first
(03:06):
five minutes. Every team says thatthat's how they want to come out.
But we really committed to playing highlevel defense, and we knew that we
could play in transition that that hasbeen a strength of ours, and so
you know, we just we justreally bought in and and we have the
opportunity to you know, get playersoff the court, and when the when
the bench came in, they wereproductive and uh so the first quarter and
(03:29):
then and then really into the youknow, the second quarter as the second
team worked through you know a littlebit of a run at them. It
was a good experience for them.So but I like the way we started
the game with a high level ofdefense and really sharing the ball offensively.
And am I the only person inyour life who when we chat weekly or
text before that, where like I'mcomplaining about this TV bit it's it's a
(03:52):
loser's lament, okay, and it'smy ultimately it's mayl But I was excited
all day yesterday. So if Iwere a Prime video and watch your game
last night at nine, and thenwe got this regional broadcast terrorism, so
I can't get it. So thenI go to Bally Sports Extra, of
course I can't get it. Ilistened to it on the radio, which
is great. You know, it'sKFA n whnd THEA Leap's getting a no
(04:13):
him and stuff like that. Butam I the only one in your life
that complains about this? Uh?Well, I guess I'm confused because it
was with the Twins right now,we were available on all the Ballet sports.
So I don't know if you don'thave the app. Are you one
of those guys that can't do apps? No, I can do I can
do apps. But after dropping thenumber I dropped monthly on Comcast, I
(04:35):
ain't paying a dollar more. Soit's I understand I went to but hey,
so we could have helped you withthat, because Ballet's helped us out.
It was getting this downs et cetera. Okay, well lead yeah,
who yeah, I do have aleague pass. But it's again, it's
the regional clip where see what I'msaying, I went, I went to
(04:55):
where I was supposed to go atnine oh five last night, and I
was shut out. So to hearthat, that makes that really that just
can't happen. And I'm and I'mwilling to concede. I may be making
a mistake here, but you knowwhat, to find my favorite basketball team
playing, I shouldn't need Rand freakingMcNally to go up and down my my
(05:16):
my my channel choices. Anyway,we're gonna get that out of the way.
Cool, And I don't want tohelp you because I love that you
that you that you that you lovewatching our team, and I and for
all those that are sharing your payingI love to I'm going my way to
help all. I'm glad you saidthat. You know why, because there
are one or two ways to go. It's either you know, I'm glad
you fit you feel that way,Paul, because you're excited to watch our
(05:36):
games, or we've been around almostthree decades. We were here before Caitlyn
got here. Where the hell youbeen? I mean it was one of
two ways. And yeah, youwith the prob. I don't think I
don't think you're watching PA because ofthis rookie class. I think you actually
enjoyed the Minnesota Links team this season. So again I appreciate that. And
it has been a journey. You'vecome a long way, and I love
(05:57):
it, and I want to makesure that we're you know, accommodating you
make sure that you you know youcan really because I do say, I
do you think you love the product? And I think that's awesome. Yeah,
I'm watching so much that I continueto mix up Jewel Lloyd and Jackie
Young. Okay, now I knowyou're gonna get Jewel on Friday, and
I know you beat Jackie recently. And what I liked about last night's when
(06:18):
you know, all of zero secondsI saw of it, but I listened
to most of it on the radioand of course read the recap. Is
that La Sparks team record wise? You know, maybe you know, without
breaking stuff, you know, maybeconsidered a terrible team. But I watched
them beat Las Vegas and snap likean eight nine, ten game losing streak.
Maybe they got something against Vegas becausethey beat Vegas at Vegas and then
(06:42):
lost a million in a row andthen stopped it by beating them again.
And then their game against Phoenix.I mean, they pushed that team right
to the wire. I mean, you know, you guys beat that team.
The team's not great, but it'sa pretty good team. So you
beat a specifically with a handby withthe way she's playing, now you beat
it. You beat an improving teamlast night, didn't you. Yeah,
(07:02):
we did. And I'm glad you'reyou're mentioning that, and you know you
are investing in your following to beable to, you know, ask these
kind of questions, the detailed questionsthat team has been playing well. The
Sparks the Sparks have been playing well, and that's why for me being down
Collier and not not sure where offenseis going to come from every night sort
(07:23):
of thing. And even our defensewith Callier, uh, you know,
her absence, a team that wasplaying well, a team that we've already
beaten twice, and to come inhere as well as they were playing coming
off you know, the massive winagainst it. They played terrific, uh
and playing well, Like you said, Hanby, you know, a top
five player in the league, andso it's an exceptional win for us.
(07:43):
I mean, you know, uh, the staff kind of reminded me after
the game, you know, Igot to get my virgo mode and I'm
like, you know that fourth quarter, you know, and I started complaining
about you know, they're like Cheryl, and they kind of went through the
things that you just said. It'sa terrific win for us, and let's
let's let's bag and let's uh,you know, we'll improve on our fourth
arter hopefully next game. Yeah,I mean, I think that's fantastic.
Now. If I really wanted toget into the weeds and kind of flex
(08:07):
right now, I would ask youwithout Talbot, how did they perform but
nevertheless, we're focusing on call year. That's that's actually great. That's actually
great because Talbot, she she wasplaying well. She was a big reason
why they beat Vegas and so butyou know, she had I guess some
sort of foot injury that she's youknow, had to kind of miss miss
our games. So I don't knowhow long she'll be out. But but
(08:28):
that's a factor for them for sure. But but overall, just again,
you know, we're down a goodplayer. They're down a good player,
you know, and we played well, we played well. Now Seattle,
you get Seattle Friday night. Wouldyou happen to know if that's an Ion
game? Uh, I will findout. It's not your job to know
(08:50):
that, it's mine. I apology. It's like it's like you asking me
what do I do with the downpick on passing game when there's a you
know, when when when the ballsdeflected? I mean, I oologize for
that. Well, it's just Igotta, I gotta, you know,
get Rand McNally and set up myFriday night where it's going to take me
a half hour to find I on, but I'll find it. Then I'll
watch c S I Miami and I'llwatch Criminal Minds and then I'll lat Yes,
(09:16):
okay, great, I'm in uh. And and because the is you're
going to get the local broadcasts andit is the worst broadcast team if you
are an opponent. Now here's theI love you guys so much. I'm
driving to Hudson, Wisconsin simply tofind a bar where I can watch it
(09:37):
on ion. Then I'll drive backhome. But but Seattle up until late
see, I mean, they justweren't losing at home. And it's not
that they weren't losing, they werejust killing teams. I mean this thing
on putting this prime video bit atnine with them, it fits perfectly into
my work schedule when I'm calling races, get home, watch the second f
and I'm like, damn, Imean this this team, this team is
(09:58):
sharp. Now they there will beregressions to means, which I would imagine
just happened a little bit with Seattle. But this this uh uh Jewel Lloyd
for them first first overall pick inthe twenty fifteen draft. And that that
lady has some bulldog to her. She's just tough, isn't she? She
really is? Uh? And shewas a big Kobe person in terms of
(10:20):
spending time with him and uh,just just learning offensively and you know,
just you know, great angles timing, just as fastened mentality. Uh.
And so Jewel has become a prolificoffensive player. Uh. She's also you
know, impactful defensively. But shereally I think has really put herself in
(10:41):
position to kind of be their franchiseplayer as Brianna Stewart departed and Super retired
and it became Jewels team. Anduh, you know, she's a big
time challenge in terms of when shegets a certain spots on the floor,
you can play great defense and she'sshe's scoring on you. She's a national
team player. And you know,I'll get a chance to be with her
(11:03):
in Paris, and I'll tell youwhat Seattle in Seattle, you know,
I'm so impressed that there. Uh, their their fan base and you know,
when the when the they've always beena good franchise, but sometimes when
you you don't know what's going tohappen, when you have retirement of the
great like Shue Bird, or youhave a departure of free agents. Uh,
they came out and supported them evenmore and in that tough year last
(11:26):
season, and uh then they wentand you know, had a great,
uh great free agency class and andand they're you know, they're they're a
really good team, and they're reallygood at home. And they are currently
on a nine game homestand don't playnine straight at home, which is a
crazy number. That's they have neara fourth of your season all in one
(11:46):
threatch and so you know, wehave our work cut out for us.
I mean, they we've beaten them, uh three times, and so that
that's a hard game. That's areally and I love it, and I
love how challenging it's going to be. It's two great defensive teams, so
it's going to be a knockdown, drag out. So scoring is you know
that that's gonna you know, that'sgonna be the premium in the game.
(12:07):
Is can we get a bucket?Because both teams just defend at a high
level. And so I don't know, I don't know, you know if
you like that random basketball, butthat's what you should expect on Friday night.
You're living right right now. Cherylh best player goes down planner fash
Hopefully she comes back soon. Whendoes she come back? By the way,
has that been announced? It hasn'tknow she's day to day okay.
(12:30):
Uh, you know, as wedeal with the planner and she's feeling good
and we're just we're just not goingto put her out there and uh,
you know, too soon type ofthing. Yeah, I mean I understand,
you know, beat those Sparks withouther, hold her out against Seattle,
and let her out of the barnon Sunday at home against that team.
Okay, I get it. Youguys. Uh, you guys,
(12:52):
So you're gonna go to Seattle todaybecause I was like, you know,
why wouldn't you stay in Los Angelesinstead go to the cappuccino Capitol where it
always rains. But it's it's holycow, you're living right eighty four and
sunny today, no humidity, eightyone and eighty two in sunnay the next
two days, right next to thePuget Sound. I mean, holy cow,
(13:13):
things are going well right now.Yeah, we've had some we've had
some great trips to Seattle where wehad some extra days in between. Now
we're not going to do anything thistime because we're you know, we're in
the midst of a pretty pretty biggrind here and just you know, taking
taking time and recovery, et cetera, and not doing extra curricular things.
But we've done the Puget Sound. We you know, we've kind of done
(13:33):
the last year, we get thegroup together and we did a boat cruise.
It just absolutely beautiful, beautiful city. And on that cruise we got
to go, you know, justsee some really cool things. And my
favorite thing to do. I'm goingto nerd out on the end. This
is what I do. We talkedabout different cities that we go to.
My favorite thing to do is togo to oftentimes on walk to Lake Union.
(13:58):
And at Lake Union they have thehyger planes right where they're taking off
and they're flying to the islands ortouring or whatever. So take off and
landing and I sit there island outsideplace and I eat, which is my
favorite thing to do on a city. Find a great restaurant, do my
thing, watch my video and watchthe hydroplanes land and take off. That's
my happy place in Seattle to dothat a couple of times. Union or
(14:20):
what. Yeah, Lake Union,it's a tall lake just just right off
the oh wow, you know, just outside the city. Yeah. I
think maybe this year when we goto Seattle for the ninety fifth time in
my play calling career. We'll skipthe Fishermen's area of the market where they
throw the passion got the stop. It's cool and everything, and that that
little that's a tourist area. Yeah, but that little upstairs breakfast spot when
(14:43):
you and I'm sure you've been there. Really, you know, I'm talking
about overlooking the future. Shoo fantastic, but I I need some of the
President of Basketball Ops money to payfor it at the way prices have gone.
Now, let's hold on eleven thirtyseven Sheryl's in the Los Angeles.
Our team never loses all of asudden, and they're off to sea.
They play on the Storm on Fridaynight. Watch it on ion if possible.
(15:03):
And Indiana is here this weekend theIndiana Fever. For those who may
not have watched them this year, who was their best overall player? And
why? You know, I mean, I hate to say this, but
I don't know the stats on them, but I would say that their best
overall player from what I can telland what I've read, would have to
(15:24):
be Caitlin Caitlyn Clark, just interms of her overall impact with the last
game. I think it was lastgame they might have played since then,
but the triple double. And wesaid this when you know she was in
college and I know everybody loves thelogo three and all that good stuff,
but her passing is just next leveland the things we never talked about.
(15:45):
And you know, if you've beenaround me, the thing that I love
is rebounding. So a guard thatrebounds, and so she's been impactful in
those areas for that team, andso for me, I would say,
as much as the Leah Boston isa great player, as much as Kelsey
Mi Solos really come on and mighteven be their leading scorer, I think
Caitlyn impacts impacts them in the waysthat I would probably call her the best
(16:07):
player. Yep, the fever herethis weekend, that league leading turnover number,
I think it's five and a half. It's actually down one over the
last week. But I mean,I don't know if you watched the games.
I know you watched the film, but there have just been so many
passes I've seen her at the rowthat have gone up people's hands and it
wasn't the greatest pass, but shethrows people open and frequently, and not
(16:29):
everybody's ready for that. Right,Yeah, that can happen, especially,
you know, you think about justchemistry and building chemistry and the more they
play together and you know, Caitlynfigure and out who can catch, who
can't catch, and you know whattype of passes needed. All that takes
a little bit of time, youknow, to build that chemistry. And
I'm quite sure from their first weekof games or even training camps and now
(16:52):
that they have markedly improved in allareas. And you know, it's crazy
that we're more than halfway through ourseason and we've yet to face a team
in this case in the Nfever,We've yet to play down. So you
know, we're going to get ateam that's much much better than they were
in the beginning and they've worked reallyhard, and you know it'll it'll be
a great environment. We'll have asellout crowd on Sunday. And you know,
(17:17):
but not a game I'm talking aboutright now in terms of that,
because to be very honest with you, I've not watched and drilled down at
all in terms of any game planning, et cetera. I got you.
And then you'll make everybody's life difficultwhen you play them. That's your job.
And you're quite good at it,or you wouldn't have that handful of
rings. All right, last one, Bridget Carlton joins nine to Noon my
radio show tomorrow at about this time, about twenty four hours from now.
(17:40):
And you know there's an Olympic bentto it with the Canadian Olympic team.
But four for four from three lastnight, and you know, when I'm
permitted the privilege and or honor oropportunity to actually watch your team, it
seems like her energy and positivity isinfectious with your team. Is that a
fair assessment? It really is,And there's just and Bridget has been this
(18:03):
for us from the very first daythat we signed her, actually on a
rest of season contract late in theseason. She had been waived in twenty
nineteen and we just were curious abouther and we brought her in and the
very first time, the very firstminutes that she got for us, she
just does something so basic. Youknow, somebody came to help. She
threw a bounce pant to somebody. It was easy. They caught it,
(18:26):
they shot it, they made itbecause it was easy. That defines Bridget
everything she does. She's the definitionof consistency doing simple things and the value
of that that gets lost on players. Bridget is never going to play outside
of herself. And there's times we'veasked her to. We've asked her to,
(18:47):
hey, get a little uncomfortable, dude, take a bad shot.
What she sees as a bad shot, you know, And that's what we
define for her is like, youthink that's a bad shot, but we
would like you to take that shot. We'll let you know if you take
a bad shot. But her defense, you know, like you said,
it's infectious. Her her energy, she's flying around helping teammates, she gets
rebounds. Literally, anything that wewant to improve on we go to Bridget
(19:11):
for And every season we've said,Okay, this year, you're going to
play some two. All right, next year, all right, when you
okay, this is we're gonna dothis. You got to play some four
for us whatever. Hey, weneed to bring the ball to court,
whatever we need. Bridget is capableand willing to do and always puts the
team first. And uh, youknow, I've I've coached some Canadians.
(19:33):
She's she's top of the list. She's my top Canadian for sure. And
she takes up residency in that rightcorner so much you might have start paying
state income tax wherever. I mean, like she runs from the right corner
every single time, right, yeah. Yeah. She had the nickname in
the in the bubble, they namedher hot pocket. Uh and and and
(19:55):
that's uh, you know, she'svery much been. And that's that is
a location. That's that's a hotpocket right there, that's her hot zone.
You, my friend, are thevery best. I appreciate the elongated
conversations each and every time. Youknow, I genuinely enjoy your company.
It's fun following your team. Bestof luck, safe travels, best of
luck against Seattle and likewise this week, and we'll talk sooner. Right back
(20:17):
to all the above for me.Two, Pa, love love doing interviews
with you. Appreciate your support, and I like, I'm willing to spend
some one on one time to getyou set up so you can watch our
games. We got to figure thisout. One one. Appreciate you.
One on one time is appreciated. One on one President of basketball Operations Monday
to pay for it, that's adifferent story. I appreciate you. See
you later. Cheryl Reeve, coachand president of basketball ops for the Minnesota Lake
