(00:23):
Vikings Country for more info and afull schedule. Vikings lost yesterday twenty to
seventeen. You heard some of thehighlights and low lights from yesterday's loss at
the Bank Home and season opener forthe Purple. The head coach, Kevin
O'Connell addressed the media earlier this afternoon. Let's hear a portion of that conversation.
Injury wise, brad Berry with theback, dar Saw with his ankle,

(00:46):
and Davenport they'll really all be dayto day. They're in, you
know now getting you know, differentphases of recovery and starting our preparation on
Philadelphia. So we'll see how thoseguys do and and you know, see
how the lineup looks for Thursday.Yeah, who know this is kind of
water or game or if you wantme to fill the exist shake A lot

(01:06):
of teams, including the Vikings incamp up look about a step WAF or
step behind where you go, boy, it looks like that they could have
gotten through some of that in thetraining gamp, but they had to play.
You know, said, do yousee that at all? That?
I mean, yeah, I don'tknow, you know about the you know,
the turnovers or you know, aspecial team's penalty here and there.
I don't know if that's the case, but my expectation is that some of

(01:30):
those things, whether they got repsor not, that that really uh,
you know, twelve reps here, ten reps there. I don't know if
that would have you know, solvedthat. I think we were you know,
we were close in the first half. If we finished that late and
a half drive, you know,to have a chance to go up seventeen
three, you know, that mighthave gave us an opportunity to be very
similar to we were to the spotwe were going into the locker room a

(01:53):
year ago and the opener. Butthat was not the case, you know,
didn't didn't get that drive done, and then uh, they're able to
go on a drive about a nineminute drive there to start this third quarter
and tie the football football game up. So a lot of things that we
can improve on and things that, like I said, self inflicted, but
also things weekly coach better. Youknow, our players just be a little

(02:15):
bit cleaner in their execution and anduh, you know, give ourselves a
little bit better chance to to notto set ourselves behind the eight ball so
far. Yesterday you mentioned a coupleof the un scouted pressures. Yeah,
extend early. You have basically preparefor the same from the Eagles. Yeah,
I think you know, shoot, this is gonna be you know,
this is one of the best defensesin football, one of the best fronts,

(02:38):
if not the best in the leagueright now. And we have a
ton of respect for you know, not only the guys that you'll see in
their starting units, but they've gotyou know, kind of a first and
second wave of of problems defensively.Uh. Yeah, there's always gonna be
some things where you know a teamcan get you, especially you know,
in the opener of the four thingshave been really put on tape yet based

(03:00):
upon game plan and something that maybethey've done in the past and just giving
you a little bit different look.We got to find ways to survive those
downs and not turn the football over. And that's all eleven guys out there,
that's not any one particular player. We made some adjustments and we're able
to handle uh, you know, that pressure moving forward in the game and
and turn it into you know, some positive conversions later on. But across

(03:24):
the board, we think our youknow, our rules and responsibilities. You
know, we handle a lot inour protection schemes, and my hope is,
you know, we really limit thoseuh you know kind of free runner
looks and you know, first thirddown of the game, Uh, they
run a really good kind of noteyou know, te stunt there to the
to the three big side, andwe didn't handle it very well. And

(03:45):
then we you know, we cameback and did it a little bit better
later on in the game. Buthow many times can we just go out
and execute those on the initial opportunitiesis what I'm looking for, and getting
off to a faster start will becritical. We'll have to do some of
those things to have a chance todo that against a you know, like
I said, one of the bestdefenses in our league. The fans and

(04:05):
the media tend to overreact after weekone. How are you going to make
sure your your players in locker roomdon't overreact or or do you want them
done a little overreact from us?Yeah, I think it's a little both.
Look, we uh, you know, no opportunity in this league,
regardless of when it takes place. You know, you don't want to underreact
to anything because it's our job toacknowledge the truth, acknowledge exactly what happened,

(04:30):
and that's us having a little bitmore information about the what. But
I totally understand that reaction, especiallywith the excitement building for hopefully this football
team. We didn't get it doneyesterday, and that's where we've got to
go back and acknowledge on a shortweek the things that you know, both
we caused ourselves, the things thatthe opponent caused, and then what opportunities

(04:54):
did we miss possibly in the gameon you know, any one of our
three phases that the outcome would beendifferent. So I think there's all the
above involved in as we comprehend, you know, yesterday with a mindset of
moving forward. And uh, youknow, no better way to feel better
about what happened yesterday than to goplay a really good game on Thursday and

(05:15):
and go try to win a gameon the road in one of the toughest
places to play against a really goodteam. But I've got nothing but confidence
in our football team, you know, and maybe even more so after watching
the tape yesterday and knowing how closethings were to being maybe a different result,
but you got to give Tampa credit. And you know, we can
talk about could what it should asall we want, but ultimately that result

(05:38):
was what it was. And nowit's how we handle that as a football
team and an organization moving forward thatI think is the most important thing.
Because Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell withthe media earlier today a chance to reflect
upon yesterday's loss, but yesterday itwas it was infinitely more immediate in the
locker room following the loss, andTatum Everett was down there to chat with
a few players, including running backAlexander Mattis. Was the reason for the

(06:00):
struggles today, one of the bigthings, you know, beating ourselves.
We just have to make sure thatwe eliminate those plays. You can't win
close games, or rarely do youwin close games when you lose the turnover
margin by that much. So cleaningthat up and not beating ourselves something that
we have to make sure we emphasize, and you know, look at everyone,

(06:21):
look at look at the man inthe mirror, and look at what
we can do better to avoid thatgoing forward, because that was a big
reason why the ball didn't roll ourway this time. How much of that
could be because there weren't so manypreseason reps like game reps for you guys,
like, is it harder to getinto that rhythm when maybe you hadn't

(06:41):
really been in that environment before. It definitely is just like kind of switch,
you know, you go straight frompractice to game mentality and something that
you have to just too but youknow that it usually takes, you know,
a couple series of get going.I think that we started off pretty
good. We just turn the ballover and that's where you know, you
lose momentum and you kind of startback at square one again. You have

(07:03):
to get the field for it again, you have to get the confidence again.
So yeah, that's just kind ofwhere we have to make sure we
fix It's Alexander Madison with Tatum Everettand sticking with the offense. She also
got the chance to chat with tightend t J. Hawkinson. Eight catches,
just thirty five yards on the dayfor him, But among all the
negatives versus being traded and starting midseason with the Purple a year ago,

(07:26):
at least he was here from minuteone and able to settle in through a
full off season and training camp.Yeah, no doubt. Obviously not the
results we wanted, you know, just a long time in camp and then
being able to come out and playin front of these fans. Obviously,
it's very disappointing for us, butyou know it's it's nice to get the
season started and you know, we'relooking forward to to turn this thing around

(07:49):
from here and going out and getsome wins. Why do you think it
was so hard to develop a rhythmagainst that front today? Uh, you
know, they're just throwing a lotat us. We kind of knew that
coming in that they were gonna, you know, bring some some blizzes from
the edge. You know, thetheir their flood and all that. But

(08:09):
you know, I mean it wasit was just one of those things.
We got heated up a couple oftimes. Things took a little longer to
develop, and you know, wewe weren't able to execute the way we
wanted. So it's a short week. So one of the things Bud Great
needs to say all the time, and he told this to Kevin O'Connell pretty
often, was short memory. Soyou have to really file this one short
memory. And and how do youapproach this week with that mindset? Yeah,

(08:33):
I mean you can't think about this. Uh, this is too long,
you know. I mean we gottaflush it. We gotta watch the
tape on our own because we don'thave time to watch it with together,
you know, So watch this onour own, get ready for Philly and
you know, Thursday night game, primetime game. We want to go out
and give us give it what wegot, you know, show show the
world what the Minnesota vacuums are. It's d J. Hawkinson and then finally

(08:54):
Vikings safety cam buying them. Spenda couple of minutes with Tatum and here
he is highlighting some of the unatticwhich she us on the defensive side of
the ball. It ultimately contributed toa loss. I would say, just
small things. They're a little smallerthere. We're in a lot of big
plays, but a lot of thesmall completions that they had, maybe whether
it's someone getting out of their zoneor any of us maybe shaking one tackle.

(09:18):
But those are the small things thatreally added up to really give us
that disadvantage that we want we didn'twant, and that's the exciting part about
the loss though. It's really smallmistakes that we're able to fix. We
felt good, especially in the firsthalf. We played well, but we
have to carry that into the secondhalf and play better. What are some
of those small things that you needto clean up? Really just things like

(09:41):
quarterback vision and being in our zones, being more a lot a lot quicker
to the ball when the ball whenthe quarterbacks, and tensions are there,
because especially if we're sending pressure thatwe know that the ball has to come
out fast. So just that understandingof when we're playing aggressive, when we're
playing a little more pa. Wegot to be able to see the difference

(10:01):
in that and be able to playmore aggressive on certain things. How did
it feel playing this scheme out therein real, you know, real game
like situation for you guys, Yeah, it was. It was really fun.
I think there's a really big upsidefor us, and I know that
it's gonna be really effective. Especiallythis is our first game, so not
that we expect any mistakes, butwe know that that's obviously gonna happen.

(10:24):
It's our first game in a newscheme, and I think we're in a
good spot. We just have tocarry that aggression and the execution through the
whole game, because we did itwell in the first half, but coming
back after half, we didn't playas well. Gam Buy them with Tatum
