Speaker 1 (00:00):
That are joining us today.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
And obviously Seattle is a huge basketball city. And our
next guest is a man who has been the voice,
the play by play voice the San Antonio Spurs for
the last twenty four years. He's been a part of
four NBA World titles. Bill Shooning joins us here and Bill,

(00:22):
you have some Seattle ties as well. I believe your
son spent some of you were salary has gone towards you.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Dub. Yes, I love you Dub like I'm a big
Sunny six Killer fan. If you go back then, Oh,
my original entree into college football was watching Sunny six
Killer play on Saturday afternoons.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I love those old UB uniforms back then. Oh those fonts,
you know, they was really cool.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Anyway, my son wanted to be a meteorologist, so he
told that the University of Washington was a great place
to go. So yeah, he finished number one in his
atmospheric sciences class. And the University of Washington has been
with the National Weather Surface in Salt Lake City now
for fifteen years and doing a great job. But yes, Seattle,
there's a lot of connection Seattle basketball wise. For US,
we had the Jonte Murray of course, who's a Seattle

(01:05):
kid and a great story coming on, you know, very
tough background.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
And so PJ.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Carlismo still lives in Seattle. He was, of course a
long time assistant for the Spurs and still works I
believe for Westwood one.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yes, yes, great job.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
And just he's a good friend and he's been part
of the Spurs organization off and on for a long
time and a dear friend of drag Popovich and so yeah,
and we missed the Sonics, and I really do and
I mean this, and nothing against Oklahoma City. I would
rather fly four hours to Seattle than one hour at
Oklahoma City.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
That's a little secret right there? Can you for my boss?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
And not only that, but all the millions and millions
of people right now listening live on Sports Radio ninety
three to three KGRFM in Seattle and throughout the PNW,
can you repeat that last sentence, you would.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Rather do what? Well?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
When the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City, we were all
upset because going to Seattle is one of our favorite cities.
Nothing against Oklahoma City, but the restaurants in Seattle you
can't even compare.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I think one time I asked, it's like appearing as
a coach Danny Hurley to Bobby Early, I off.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
The concierge for a good Italian restaurant, well and the study,
and they sent it in Olive Garden.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
No, no, no, by the way, one of my built
one of my uh sort of sources of pride. I've
never seen one Fast and the Furist movie, and I've
never eaten at an olive garden.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
There go, so there. So there's that.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
I want you to tell the fans out there, especially
for people who are under the age of twenty five,
like this, this young gentleman from West with one who
chaperon you around, how amazing of a basketball city Seattle
is it really is?

Speaker 1 (02:39):
And Key Arena? I love here.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Well, by the way, now it's climate Pledgerina, ok, okay,
all right, well, and it's a whole new thing.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
So yeah, it's given me completely revivals.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
I will tell you, I haven't been to the Chase
Center in San Francisco. You have, so you and you
haven't been a climate pledge. I had a guy last
night in the plane with me who was coming from
a private school in San Francisco. He's here at the
NABC trying to move up in the coaching ran and
he was saying, well, I don't know, it's Chase Center.
I'm like, listen, I would eat off the floor at
Climate Pledge Arena. And it's one of the coolest things too.

(03:07):
We're joined by Bill Shoning here from the San Antonio Spurs,
the voice of Spurs for nearly a quarter of a century.
And you can watch the Kraken games from the outside
if you're standing outside Seattle Center.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I was at the Kracking game on Saturday night. We
are chomping.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
I listen, Bill, I've only been Seattle for eight weeks
two months, is that right?

Speaker 1 (03:30):
I just got there. You're so passionate about it.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
No, because listen, I think it's one of the single
biggest travesties. And I don't care even if I wasn't
lucky enough to be employed by one of the greatest
sports talk stations in the world, KGr, which you know
has been around forever. Again on the station a few
times you have been Yes, yes, there's a guy you
might have spoken to by the name of Dave Softy Maller.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
You might know him. I've been on Zofi show too,
so you know it.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
So I just like, for me I'm like, that's just
like when you look at it from the outside looking Bill,
it's been.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Seventeen Yeah, it's crazy, crazy.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
You know, And you think about it, like Sonics draft Rant.
They had him for one year. He lived in Mercy
and Westbrook too, but no Wes West Bookers drafted in
June of two thousand and eight, and then they moved
a couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Later exactly, but officially he is drafted by the Seattle Supersonic.
Last night we played Denver and and I was going
through his bio and I said, this is how long
he's been in the league.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
He was drafted by the Seattle super Soon. Unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
And by the way, who do they following year James Harden, Yes,
that should have that part of that is Sam Presty.
Dan Presty was an assistant GM for the Spurs and
a young kind of under wonder kid, and I knew
that he would do very, very well wherever. He's still
to this day is drafting guys that other guys pass
up that are successful. You look at the Jalen Williams kid,
and there's all kinds of good examples in Oklahoma City.
I think they're gonna win the West, and I thought

(04:51):
I and I'm moved here. And one of the reasons
why is Sam Presty because he put that team together.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
He's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
By the way, my guy from Arkansas, Isaiah Joe is
turning out to be a hell of a one of
the best three point shoers in the league.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
The other Jaylen Williams not so bad either.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
JDub and j Will juw and j Will so uh
and and what was it like for you all the
years that you came to Key Arena. Just tell me
about like the experience for people out there, Like I'm
trying to reach the young'ins out there and the kids
who have never experienced what it was like to go
to a Sonics game at KI Arena.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
It was an awesome atmosphere.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
The first playoff series I ever did was between the
Spurs and the Sonics.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
This how long ago it was The first round was
best of five? What near?

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yes, that would have been oh one o two, okay, okay,
so that would have been two playoffs and just just
an awesome atmosphere. I remember Bruce Hornsby played the national
anthem and just you know, weird things you remember, right,
and kind of kind of crazy things stuff like that.
Ray Allen of course was playing for the Sonics at
the time. Yep, so right before he got traded to Boston.
That's that's right, real quick story back in that era.

(05:50):
The Sonics a little bit after that, I think had
a center named Petrog Drobniak, and Throbniak was from Serbia
or someplace over there, and I thought maybe I'd get
an interview with him, because I always liked the interview
the foreign players, because we had a bunch of foreign
players in our team. They're always interesting stories. And I
went to interview him and his English wasn't very good.
And they had an assistant coach to the Sonics at
the time named John Demopolos, and he called me over

(06:10):
and he said, next.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Time we want to interview one of our players, make
sure they speak English.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Bill showing me the voice of San Antonio Spurst year
live from Radio Row to Final four in San Antonio,
Curtsey of Westwood One, Mark James M.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Jay in the Midday.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
So, Bill and you talked about that, and I mean,
but you obviously your knowledge goes I mean, I go
back to I mean X Man and Debt Live Shrimp
and Jack Sigma and and all that, and then and
then you come to you know, the nineties where it
like I tell people, I'm like, man, if it wasn't
for Robert Pack and d Ken they Mutambo in nineteen

(06:45):
eighty four, it would have been Nick Sonics. So that
would have been the OJ. It wouldn't been Nick Rocket,
it would have been Nick Sonics. And you think about
George carl and you think about Pink Floyd, like the
like run like hell when that was the theme, you know,
when they came.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
Out, it was like it was just so unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, and the atmosphere was great in there, and that's
one of the things I think David Stern was really
kind of wanting to get Seattle back in the picture.
And it's not out of the realm of possibility hopefully.
Oh no, it's happening soon. I expect, who knows what's
gonna happen in the future, but I think expansion certainly
is on the horizon.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Well, we're all hoping.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Bill Sheening voiced to San Antonio spurs Here on MJ
in the Midday that Adam Silver, who does his State
of the League address, usually before the playoffs, So coming
up anytime soon now, in a couple of weeks, that
there's going to be an announcement. And you know, I've
heard words that probably the beginning of the twenty twenty
seven twenty twenty eight season that listen, it's been gone
way too long. Even at that point, Bill, you're talking

(07:40):
twenty years of a top eleven market in America without
the heart and soul. One of the best basketball cities,
I'll tell you right now, other than New York City Chicago,
I don't know many better basketball cities.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Now.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Obviously, I know you're loyal to San Antonio, but with
all due respect, then Seattle and people or Bill, I
was at a thing a couple of weeks ago. It
swin Amish Casino, and uh, there was an event Sean
Kemp was doing an autograph signing two hours.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Yeah, I'm a two hour line. Unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Yeah, that was a great era of SODICX basketball. It's
a shame because you think about all the great teams
and the way that the city supported it.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
You know, it just didn't deserve No it happened.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
There No no go to be so happy that they
still have the green and Gold. They protected the Green
and Gold, so nothing against that. Again, nothing against the Thunder,
but I'm happy the Thunder, Blue and Orange whatever they
got going on. Yeah, but whenever a team does come
back in Seattle, they're gonna work great.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Absolutely, Bill showing. So let's talk about the San Antonio Spurs.
What a trade for de Aaron Fox. Yes, he comes
in the team. I thought in year two this was
gonna be the year where Wenby. I mean, you guys
are in thirteenth place right now in the West, so
I mean you're kind of on the outside looking in
unless you would make a major run to the plan.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Yeah, the injuries really hurt.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
When Wemby's at the final thirty games of the year
with this said, deep veing throng Bosos, de Aaron Fox's
for the rest of the year.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
He broke his face. He had a pinky figure that.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
He was playing with all year long, and they finally decided,
you know, let's let's just you know, go to the
surgery now. So he's ready for next year. So when
you look at this year, it's kind of like it's
a tough thing. But Steph Castle is probably going to
get Rooie of the Year he's really coming on right now.
He's had a chance to play a lot more and
a lot more responsibility on him with the Aaron Fox out,
and he has really responded very very well. He's just
really playing good basketball right now. And I knew he

(09:24):
was going to be a great player coming out of Ukon.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
You knew it. He's a tough kiss. Yeah, yeah, he's
one of these guys that he does.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
He's listed at six five, two ten, and I always
kid with our assistant coaches from Australia, Matt Neilson, I said,
is he really two ten? Because I you know, I
covered football for a long time. He looks like a
strong safety this kay. He looks like he's about two
twenty five, two thirty, you know, maybe even bigger than that.
And he says, you know, I only know kilos, I
don't know pounds, so I'm not quite sure.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
On that quick say.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
So it's his rightway saying, yeah, maybe he's a little
bit bgger than two ten, but a very aggressive kid
gets the free throw line and understands angles, and he's
learning what he's twenty years old, so he's got a
very right break future. So if he comes back next year,
you're healthy and ready to go, and Wenby is healthy,
and Darren Fox, and they'll get at least one good draft.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Pick, maybe two. Devin Vessel. Devan Vessel is Lauta state.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, yeah, he didn't play last night, but he's averaging
about sixteen and a half per game. And so with
all these other pieces that they got a chance to
really make a move forward, they'll probably try. I would
think to get a big man, get some help for
Wemby inside, because you know, Wemby's not a typical five guy.
You know, he can play a couple of different positions,
and he's not always in the paint.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
You know, he loves shooting outside.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
But I think that you know, as he progresses and
he gets stronger and understands the game even more. I mean,
he's averaging twenty four and a half points per game
at eleven rebounds, and he's just scratching.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
The surface of what he can do.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Do you think Bill Schening is joining us here, the
voice of San Antonio Spurs for the last twenty four
years on MJ in the Midday Life from Radio row
Here in San Antonio courtesy of Westwood One. Do you
think that Wemby his game can be somewhat different, certainly
a better defender, but somewhat along the lines of Nikola Jokic. Yes,
except Jokich is a completely different player.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
It's so hard to compare Jokic to anybody, right, the
most unique player ever, So he is an anomaly.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
He's what's the appurtennis sister game? The other night? Sixty
one point triple double.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, and he wanted to play last night, which is
the second night of the back to back, and coach
Michael Belongs says, you know, you played fifty two minutes
last night.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yok yah, Yeah, let's let's sit down tonight.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
So anyway, but yeah, I'm still ober for the playoffs,
and I hope that series happens that we were talking
about earlier. I was with Minnesota. Minnesota and Denver could
be an opening round opening series.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
How about Yeah, the other night was unbelievable, So h
what about the status in terms of you talking about
the health So whenmy you'll come back healthy completely next year?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
We're hoping. So yeah, okay, and.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
You got dear and fot and then that is a
nucleus of that is a team that if you're gonna
invest right now I'm bullish on the Spurs.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
What about the health of Greg Popovitch, the head coach.
That's the big question mark right now. We really don't know.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Steve Curve visited with him the other day when the
Warriors were in town. He said he looks great, so, uh,
you know, we'll just have to wait and see. I
know he wants to come back and he's worked very
hard to kind of rehab. But yeah, you know, hopefully
he's feeling God. That's the main thing now, no question
about it.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
And it would be interesting to see him and him
come back in that form after been a part of
the going back to the Admiral David Robinson and Avery
Johnson and then the Tim Duncan, Jenoble Lee Parker era
and then to see this new era ushered in. And
if I'm not mistaken, a guy I think up the road,
I think it's north of here.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Came from the great Popovitch coaching tree. Emyudoka, he Mayodoka
now is with the Houston Rocket. I know he played
with us twice.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
He had two stands, the player Addison as an assistant
coach and I've really doing great things with the Rockets
down at it ten. Yeah, he was a really really good, tough,
tough minded coach. Always was a tough defensive guy as
a player. He's one of those guys that as a
player he became a coach and he had the same personality, right,
and he definitely has a pop disciple. You know, he's
got the same kind of mindset as far as defense first.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
So this will be five straight losing seasons for the Spurs,
might be six. Let's say there's sixth out of the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Yeah, wow, So how have the I mean, listen, you're
not in the market where like that was in New
York with the Knicks or Philly with the Sixers.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
You know, heads with roll. But but you know how
the people just you know come to that.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
I mean, because you're talking about a franchise that's one
as many titles over the last twenty plus years as
the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
If you get a chance to go through downtown Mark,
you'll see all these murals of Victor wembin Yama everywhere.
The future is Wemby, So they're building around him. The
future is bright because of him and because of all
the other pieces they have. So I think the optimism
about the Spurs future is centered around this frenchman that's
seven to three with an eight foot windspan.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
And by the way, I'm my mother's side of the
family is French. I'm very proud of like France now
producing these great players coming and Wemby is just unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
And of course it started with Tony Parker. It did, Yeah,
it did at the age of nineteen when he came over.
My rookie year was Tony's rookie year, so I got
a chance to see him kind of grow up.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
And his dad's big blues and jazz fan.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
I live up in Austin, so who would come up
and hang out and we have to listen to music.
You know, Seattle's a great music town, but I live
in Austin, which is also an awesome music town, and
so we get a chance to go out and hang
out and listen to music.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
From when you took over twenty four years ago as
the voice of the Spurs to now, the game has
changed exponential. Yes, obviously, if I look at one player
who would be the face of changing the game more
than anybody, and I know him very well from my
time in Charlotte when I used to host on a
station there and we would be live at the Curry
Golf Classic at Davidson.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
And it would be Steph Curry.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Do you think the game has it changed for the better,
has it changed for the worst, or is it just
evolving in a way that you could because not to
name drop, there was a guy on my flight last night.
Everybody knows one of the greatest players who played above
the rim.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
Doctor J. Julie Serving, was on my flight last.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Night, and I'm like, wow, I wonder how doctor j
would have played in an era where everything is played
beyond twenty four feet.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
And I think the three point shot obviously has changed
things and Steph has a lot to do with that
because and analytics coming in studying while the three pointers
worth more than the two pointer. But the thing that
I miss most remember my first years were one to
oh two and David Robinson was playing for this Burst
and Tim Duncan was playing for this Burs. These were
teams built on defense. They were given up eighty five
points the game. They were allowing Bruce Bowland, Bruce Bowling

(15:02):
on the perimeter against Kobe Bryant. I mean, what a
great matchup that was. Was it semi dirty at times.
Maybe you know, I get a little edgie, but that's
what they let him play back then. Now you can't
breathe on a guy without a foul every play. It's
in my in my opinion, right now, it's too much
in favor of the offense. They allow the guys on
offense a little bit too much freedom. They allow palming,
which and I'm not saying they got to do the
old style Bob Coosey dribble, but I'm just saying that

(15:23):
sometimes you gain an advantage by carrying the ball pass
the defender who thinks you're picking up your dribble. It
puts the defender on skates, basically, And so I think
that the offensive player has an advantage now in the
game that maybe back in the day when they let
you bang a little bit inside, that didn't happen. And
I'm not going back to the Bill Lambier eight bad
I'm going back to there. I'm just saying, when they
let you, you know, get really physical side. I joked

(15:43):
with Sean Kemp a couple of weeks ago at swim
Mish Casina. I was telling his son, he's like twenty
three years old, and I said, you have no idea
your dad played when these guys were gladiators. And I'll
tell you right now when some of the fouls that
are called now as a flagrant one or flagrant too,
Anthony Mason is rolling over in his grave as we speak.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
You know what I'm talking about, Bill, Like he would
be laughing at what they call flakrant felt.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
I see Rick Mahorn on a regular basis because Rick
is the analyst for Detroit Pistons Radio.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
And Rick's a bigger guy now that he used to be.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
But anyway, every time I see Rick, I try to
give men elbow and you know, I try to start
a little someelthinge with him. Obviously not starting hand there
with Rick Mahoran, but no, but back in the day,
you couldn't come in the paint against those guys.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Remember those guys.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Like if you go back and anyone can YouTube this,
especially for the youngs out there, and you know, you
look at the goat Michael Jordan, and you look at
I mean, Bill, it's unbelievable. In eighty eight, he lost
in five games to the Pistons. In eighty nine, he
lost in six games to the Pistons. In ninety. They
absolutely the Pistons the bad Boys. If you watched those games,

(16:50):
went to seven in that series in nineteen ninety. What
they did to him was criminal. It was felonious. They
should have been locked up and arrested. But that's the
way the game was played. But Michael actually credits he said, listen,
the Pistons were Doctor Frankenstein, and then they created the
Monster who then swept them in ninety one and then
went on to win six of the next eight titles.

(17:12):
So it's like you look at that, You're like, wow,
the game has changed so much in terms of I
want to just get your final thoughts on this. Seattle
and if the Sonics come back, what that would mean
for not only the people who have had it will
be twenty years by the time and this is just
hopefully they come back in the beginning of the twenty

(17:33):
twenty seven twenty twenty eight season, but what it would
mean for the city that was robbed of a franchise
in one of the best basketball cities in the world.

Speaker 3 (17:43):
The announcers around the Lady are already and we're ready
to hop the next plan to go to Seattle hang
out and what's that really good Italian restaurants A Third
and Stewart.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
But can you let me know because I'm looking for
good Italian r I don't.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Know Burton Stewart, Yeah, somewhere, Okay, Yeah, well, I want
to go to El Gaucho when I get back. That's
a great steakhouse there in downtown, so I'm gonna go
to that. Listen, Bill shehoning. I really appreciate you joining
us and listen. If there's anything that you know, uh,
in terms of the San Antonio Spurs or anything that
you want to promote, let me know.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
We're good.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Oh yeah, yeah, I do have a book out story,
Sports and Songs that's on Yeah. During COVID, I wrote
a book, so it's basically about the career, about my music,
and we've had a lot of fun, you know. Basically
instead of writing one long story, what I'd decided to
do Marcus are three hundred short or three hundred pages
of short stories.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
So it's one hundred short stories. And by the way,
I just like that.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Yeah, well it makes it an easier read, you know,
it's more like readers digest kind of stuff. But like,
for instance, you have real short story about meeting Larry
Bird and interviewing him.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Yeah, just different things like that.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
And you know all of our international players through the
years from all these different countries and all the different
experiences with those guys, And yeah, I got to cover
every game in Monution Obli's career with you know, sixteen
years Hall of Famer, you know, seven twenty one winning
percentage of best all time. So a bunch of stories
like that, unbelievable and and you continue to do it. Well.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
I'll tell you what we hopefully in a few years.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
Beginning of the twenty twenty eight season, I'd like it
to be sooner, Bill Shoning, we hope to see you
when the Spurs are coming to town and the victor
Wembayama and who knows what they're going to do in
the front office. But I said, maybe he can bring
back one of Seattle's own, Polo Bancaro back to back
to Seattle I from Oday High School, bring him back.
So we appreciate thank you very much for joining us,

(19:19):
Bill Shoning right here on from the voice that San
Antonio Spurs also want to say this as well.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Who is a big thing right now?

Speaker 2 (19:27):
NABC Coaches versus Cancer is partnership between the American Cancer
Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches unites coaches, fans,
and members of the basketball community in supporting the American
Cancer Society work to improve the lives of people with cancer.
From somebody who has lost his father into grim mothers
to cancer, I can tell you you know someone out

(19:49):
there who's been affected by this.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
We all know that.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
So it is what it is, and I will tell
you American Cancer Society Coaches Versus Cancer program is so
important because what it does is able to raise critical
funds to improve the lives of cancer patients by advancing
cancer research and providing patient support and advocating for those
affected by the disease.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
So please do.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Whatever you can and you can visit Coaches dot cancer
dot org to learn more. All right, on the other side,
we will have a lot more from Radio Row live
here at the Final Four in San Antonio on MJ
in the midday on ninety three to three KJR FM, Seattle.

(20:33):
Actually we're going to be joined by the head coach
of the Oklahoma Sooners, Porter Moser, who led Cinderella Loyola
Chicago to the Final Four back in twenty eighteen with
sister Jean, who is currently one hundred and five years
old and still alive. Sister Gene, yes that Porter Moser,

(20:59):
he had a horrible, well not horrible, but a tough
loss yesterday. Jeremiah Fears the QD who just turned eighteen
years old, was I believe all SEC team as a
freshman declared for the NBA Draft, So he is on
his way to the league. Will be a top ten
who knows, maybe even a top five pick. We'll talk

(21:19):
to Portermoser next And why is the SEC so much
better than everybody else? Hey, you need more data so
you can stream your jam mix on a loop. Switch
to straight Talk and get real unlimited data on a
reliable five G network. Straight Talk available at Walmart or
straight talk dot com. Porter Mooser from the Oklahoma sowers

(21:42):
in so much more next hour, the head coach of
the Oregon Ducks, Dana Altman and Dallan Cuff from ESPN
live from Radio row MJ in the midday ninety three.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
To three KJRFM.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
His gambling as sharp as they come, Princeton educated, so
at least one person on the show will be smart,
not me, but we'll talk to him next hour.

Speaker 1 (22:05):
And yeah, so it's been it's been fun out here
so far.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
There's a there is an electricity with four to one
seeds and you get a feeling kind of what iin
Eagles said yesterday about it really being the best four
teams in the country. You know, Auburn, Florida duke in Houston.
So looking forward to that. Hey, trust your game, trust
your wiring with Wago Electrical Connectors. Gear up at wago

(22:31):
dot com slash hoops for your next electrical project.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
All right back.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
Here on MJ in the midday, right here on Sports
Radio ninety three to three KJR FM, live from the
Final Four Radio row in San Antonio, courtesy of Westwood One.
Mark James here with you, and right now we are
privileged to be joined by one of the better coaches
in college basketball from the best conference by far and away,

(22:58):
according to j.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
Billis.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
And you will get no argument from me because I
went to school in this conference, the SEC fourteen teams
in the tournament. We are joined by the head coach
of the Oklahoma Sooners, Moser and Porter coach. I could
tell you this right now, this place, San Antonio has
got to bring up some special memories because you were
here about seven years ago, taking a small Catholic school

(23:22):
out of Chicago.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
To a Final four.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
And let's just say that those T shirts don't look
to what they do right now with all the one
seeds in shock, do they?

Speaker 4 (23:30):
No, it's nostalgic. Trust me, I would I would rather
be rolling into town on the team bus rather than uber.
But it was such a magical time. And I always said,
I've been in the profession. I got done playing at
Creighton in ninety ninety one and I got into the profession.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Right there.

Speaker 4 (23:45):
I knew my abilities could not take me to the
next level, so I jumped into coaching. And I've been
coaching since ninety two. So every seams, like five six years,
it's in San Antonio, and every year I was like,
San Antonio is the best destination.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
It is my first time here. It's the best.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
The riverwalk, how they embrace it, it's just a cool
the weather, it's just adding up. And then for us
to get there in twenty eighteen, to be in San
Antonio and that run we had, it was a special
and you're looking at it now too, to be honest
with you. You see the Sweet sixteen this year with Nil
and the transfer Portal. It's the first time ever all

(24:21):
sixteen teams were power forward, and you just wonder if
those kind of runs can happen with kids being able
to transfer it all the time.

Speaker 2 (24:26):
Well, that's why I'm even surprised that you're I'm so
happy to see you because it was like it's portal
season right now, and not only do you have to
go after you know guys that are out there, and
there's Jeff Goodman said one four hundred players.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
Have entered the portal. The whole game has changed. Coach.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Last year at the Dick VI Tal Gala in Sarasota,
I was lucky enough to go to it for two
years in a row, and I ran into someone you
know very well, Hall of Fame coach Jim Beheim, and I.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
Said, Coach, do you miss coach?

Speaker 2 (24:57):
And before I could say ing, he said, not at all,
he said, and he said to me, he goes you
look at me, Mike coach, k Roy Williams, J Wright,
and then you threw in Nick Saban and Urban Meyer
and he said, we want nothing to do with this
in al.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
So how has it been for you because.

Speaker 2 (25:13):
You've been around and you were at Arkansas Little Rock
and then you were at Loyal Chicago and now you
were in the N I L Portal era.

Speaker 1 (25:22):
How much has that change from then till now?

Speaker 4 (25:24):
Well, first of all, those guys got championship rings, so
I want jewelry. The other thing, so you know, the
first thing is you. It is it's it's changed so much.
Everything is changed and you have to lean into it.
But what it is, it's just the the there being
no guardrails. I'm I'm okay with and I really believe

(25:46):
that student athletes should be compensated.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
It's just there's been no guardrails and with everything.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
And so I've been such a coach of skill development, retention,
you know, every getting guys. Now it seems like you
have to sign nine or ten new guys every year
because if they do do well, they're going to go
in the portal.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Did you ever watch the show Don't Do Well? Did
you ever watch the show? And you're too busy, so
you probably haven't watched this show American Horror Story.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
I have not.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Okay, Well, every year is in the anthology. It has
nothing to do with the previous year, so it's not
a continuum like the Sopranos or breaking back.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
That's college basketball.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Now you just lost a guy who's going to be
a top ten, a lottery pick in Jeremiah Fears. He's
going the Pros and kudos to him. He will be
awesome in the Pros. So now you've got to replace him.
Then you gotta also, like you said, retention, you got
to keep the guys that you just had this year
that took you to the tournament.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
Think about this.

Speaker 4 (26:39):
So we we just we took a high school, reclassed
up Jeremih Fears and now he's gonna be a lottery
but our point guard the last two years as we
started refreshment of sophomore is starting for a Final four
team Houston Milos Usan with Bish.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
Two years and by the way, great.

Speaker 4 (26:53):
Player, positional size, a point guard. And then also that
started along with him for two years with another freshman
that was all As Taga away at Kentucky. So I
started him for two years and we weren't able to
retain them with nil great kids.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
They've done. They've done great. Frustrating, but it's part of it.
It's part of it.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
You just have to go and I'll say this, they're
all privileged problems but I look at the mid majors,
the Missouri Valleys of the world, the Atlantic Tens, and
you know, you go in and you get you know,
you see those leagues. They get a freshman of the
year and they poured into that freshman and he's moving
to the high major. It's just it's a hard cycle
with that. And but this, this this tournament right now,

(27:32):
you're seeing four elite teams. You know, I think the
last two years we've seen Yukon. I thought Yukon was
head and shoulders above everybody, yep, and it showed with
all the double figure wins every game.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
This year, I thought there was like eight teams that
were just head and shoulders.

Speaker 4 (27:46):
Above everybody, maybe twelve. But this final four team with
all the one seeds, this is an as an elite,
a final four four some that.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
You've seen, no question about it.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
You have number one Houston, number one Auburn, number one Florida,
and number one Duke. Now you are no strangers to
Auburn and Florida and the SEC. Let's just talk about
it right then there, because I know people especially in
you know, I've only been in Seattle for two months,
so I came from a heart of the SEC in Florida.
And I will tell you that this league and it

(28:18):
is when they say it just means more.

Speaker 1 (28:22):
That's not just a slogan or a catch for you
know it. You've seen it. You experience it in Norman
and you go into.

Speaker 2 (28:28):
Bud Walton Arena and you guys beat my boys this
year and you've had our number the last couple of
years since you've been there. Were you going to Rupp
Arena or you know, you go into Knoxville Thompson Boiling Arena.
It's just it's and now it's not at football conference.
It's an all athletic conference, especially basketball.

Speaker 1 (28:46):
But how did it get such it becomes such a
powerhouse in basketball.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
It's just the SEC, the way it's run, the all
the teams and the sports. There's just so much poured
into them. And the thing about it is like you
think about men's basketball in the SEC this year, fourteen
of sixteen obviously got in, but fourteen is sixteen spent
considerable time in the top twenty five. Yeah, fourteen of them.
You have seven teams in the sweet sixteen. And here's
what it is.

Speaker 1 (29:09):
It's it's daunting.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
The physical challenge like to go in like you watch
when you watch these teams that are in Auburn and Florida,
positionally size there's six eleven, six ten, six'. Nine it's positionally.
Size so there is that, physical you.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
Know, thing but it's also mental because you go.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
In we started out thirteen and, zero tenth in the,
country Beat michigan who won The Big Ten, Tournament louisville's,
second and the Acc arizona, second and The big. Twelve
we start out thirteen in a, row and then all
of a, sudden you're going At, alabama At, auburn At,
florida and you're just sitting here, going, MAN i mean,
This you've mentally got to get your guys up because
you can keep taking a punch and falling. Down you

(29:48):
got to get back up because three days later you
got another top ten.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
Team isn't it?

Speaker 2 (29:51):
Unbelievable and it's so like WHEN i always, SAID i,
said you look At March. Madness this, year joined By Porter,
moosa the head coach of The oklahoma stuenters here ON
mj in The Midday line From Radio row courtesy Of
Westwood one In San. Antonio you, LOOK i, Said march
it might be easier to Win March. Madison it was
THE sec tournaments literally, Right i'm telling.

Speaker 4 (30:11):
YOU i also we said it, too like think About florida's.
Run they JUST i remember they won. IT i think
at was it At auburn towards the end of the.
Year then they then to go through the grind of
THE sec tournament and won, that and they won that
and then to turn right around and jump into the
tournament and to win, THAT i, mean there's just a.

(30:32):
Grind it's a metal grind. Too with these are privileged
problems too like, that but for those for the. Guys
but you, know to to bounce back up every game
because it's it's three days, later three days later to get.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
GOING i know you're from The chicago area and AND
i know you AND i have one thing now From,
chicago but we do have one thing in.

Speaker 1 (30:52):

tell you AND i met him a couple of.

Speaker 1 (31:02):

Speaker 2 (31:05):

a little kid and you have Those Air jordan ONE o.

AND i want to ask you.

Speaker 2 (31:16):

Speaker 4 (32:08):

o'clock and he's not, there and there's just such a.
Buzz there's like four hundred and fifty kids that can't
play basketball. All they just had four hundred dollars to
pay for the. Camp and we get in there and
all of a, sudden like there was a buzz and
everyone's looking out and here comes a. Helicopter it landed
in the parking. Lot he gets off the. Helicopter he
