(00:00):
Smoot, Kimmy and Otis. Weare joined. This could be a lot
of fun. Today we got alittle private VIP show in the Dunkin Music
Lounge here at the Atlanta Studios. We've got rising star Drew Baldridge and Drew.
You we talked yesterday on Instagram. But I think you have a fascinating
story which really shows like just thepower of like not only you being a
(00:20):
talented singer and songwriter and country music, but also like connecting with fans and
people that connected the music over socialmedia. Yeah. Man, you know,
my world's really changed over the lastcouple of years because I had a
record deal from twenty sixteen to twentynineteen and put music out and had singles
of radio, and then that allkind of just went away in twenty nineteen,
(00:40):
and I didn't really know what Iwas going to do. And then
one of my really good friends Isaw her posting these these videos and I
was like, what are you doing? When it was Laney Wilson, and
she was like, you gotta geton TikTok, and she said a lot
countrier than that TikTok, you gottaget on it. And so she's like,
it's changed my life. So Igot on TikTok and it literally it
(01:02):
changed my life. And you know, since then, we started putting out
songs. We did a whole tourover covid where I just posted on TikTok
and Instagram and Facebook and said,I'll play in anybody's backyards it wants to
have me, And we went aroundthe country and played in over three hundred
people's backyards, which was a lotof fun. And then we put out
this song called She's Somebody's Daughter thatmy wife actually danced to with her dad
(01:23):
at our wedding, and then weposted it and just went megaviral and now
it's our our single to country radio. It's been life changing. When you
pulled up at those yards where they'retithing, you're like, whoof, we
should have done a little more research. WHOA, There's definitely a few of
those. But one thing that Ithat I learned over this whole thing is
you know what you put out onsocial media and who you are and what
(01:44):
you stand for. Like, youknow, I'm very small town, I'm
very you know, family oriented withmy wife and my baby, and almost
what I realized is who you know, what you put out or who people
that follow those are the people thatfollow you. And so most people that
I went up to, I wouldhang out with them on an everyday base,
especial when you're hold the curtain backlike you do, you know,
being authentic. I think that's thepart of it. Like you know,
(02:04):
it's easy to flex on social media, but if you go look at the
people you really connect with the peoplethat you look at and you're like,
oh, I do that. That'ssomething that happens that is me. Well,
some of your biggest songs, Reboundyou had senior year was a big
one for the seniors a couple ofyears, and you guys were a big
part of that too. She's Somebody'sdaughter. We're going to talk about that
one. That's going massive viral rightnow. But you wrote a song that
(02:25):
connects with me because we're both middleof nowhere Illinois kids. That's right,
And that's the cool part about countrymusic is we're country, but a lot
of us come from different country. We came from cornfields you were, you
were like, I guess they hateto reference the Cowboys and Plowboys song.
Luke Brian and John Party just putout, Yeah, we were in the
farms we were And that's one thingI've learned too, is that, you
(02:49):
know, my town is a townof five hundred and fifty people and graduate
high school with twenty two kids. And sometimes when I try to write songs
about that be so specific, sometimesit's almost even too small of a You're
like, people know exactly who you'retalking about. Yeah, yeah, I
could do that, really, butI just think there are there are different
kinds of country. But you know, we had a song called Middle of
(03:09):
Nowhere Kids that was all talked aboutthat also about just growing up in the
middle of nowhere, and it mademe, you know, it's all part
of what I create now, iswhere I come from has a big,
big part of that. She's Somebody'sdaughter was written about your wife, about
as your impending marriage had and youknow you've been married for a couple of
(03:29):
years now. I was there forthe wedding, and you wrote this song
to tell her, like I seethat there's another man in your life that's
always going to be more important tome. And that's what I love about
the song. Yeah, man,I wrote it literally after meeting her dad
for the first time, and Iremember driving back to Nashville, and just
kind of thinking to myself, like, man, you know, if I
break her heart, I'll be breakingher mama's heart and her daddy's heart too.
(03:50):
And I just want to write amessage to myself to never forget that.
And so this is the song.I wrote it, and it was
always my wife's favorite. You know, when I put it out, it
really didn't do much like we putit up, and I had a record
deal at the time we put itout and nothing happened. Well, then
we got married, and it wasalways my wife's favorite song. I was
like, well, I'm going tomake this a wedding version. So I
(04:11):
made a wedding version for her soshe could dance to it with her dad,
and we were on our honeymoon. She danced to with her dad.
At the wedding we went on ourhoneymoon. We were in Hawaii. We
were standing in line to get shavedice and the line was like a quarter
mile long. I have no ideawhy people want to get weight this off
the shed dice. They love it. And so I was like, hey,
you you wait in line, I'mgonna go get make a TikTok,
(04:32):
and she was like, really, you're gonna leave me in this line,
go make a TikTok that the wasa millennial thing. Ever, right now,
I can't just sit here my wifeall the time. Yeah, and
so I was like, She's likereally, and I was like, it's
gonna take me five minutes. Igo make this TikTok. I come back,
We eat our shaved dice, wedriving around the island, and we
wake up the next morning and thevideo has almost ten million views. And
(04:55):
the song came out that next dayand it was top twenty five viral in
America, number eight in Norway, number seven in Sweden, trending on Shazam
and South Africa, and it wasjust all over the world and it was
just wild. It happened in likea day's time. And then since then
it became a daughter trend on TikTokand and now you know, we're taking
(05:15):
it to country radio and it's andit's in a really cool way. And
since so many people streamed it,it's organic. Yeah, it's organic,
and we got to create. Icreated my own label in this video.
I'm not in a relationship, butif I had had that experience, did
you turn around to her afterwards? And was like, aren't you glad I
went and made that TikTok. I'velearned that to not do that. Yeah,
(05:39):
you've got to sudbout your winds andeat the losses. Yeah, I
just kind of look and smile anddon't have to say a whole lot.
If you haven't heard the song oryou haven't seen the video, the cool
part is he lets you in onthe wedding, uh, when it all
went down, when she danced withher dad. There's clips of that throughout
the video, so neat the musicvideo is literally our wedding day and me
(06:00):
and the studio and I actually wentthrough and found home videos of her growing
up. That's awesome and have thosethroughout the video too. So that didn't
take That took a long time. That took a long So there's one cool,
really cool thing about it too,not only just for being like a
wedding song. I know you gota really incredible story about that making a
full circle, but also just thepremise of like she's somebody's daughter, or
(06:21):
this person is something to somebody.I think in this era of that we're
so connected on social media, butfrom such a disconnected, disconnected capacity and
you got people on dating apps treatingeach other like garbage. You kind of
forget the humanity of it all.Yeah, but you're like that human being,
like you said, when you're drivingback, thinking about man, she's
loved by these people, She's importantto other people, Like I have to
(06:45):
remind myself and make sure that Iam not careless with this person because of
how much they love by other people. And I think we forget that as
just interconnected in just as humans.Yeah, and I think, you know,
yes, it's been a great weddingsong and that's been cool, but
it's also it has so many differentmeanings to so many other people. And
that's what I've loved to see is, you know, meet and greets.
I have full you know, grownmen in their fifties and then they're weeping,
(07:11):
holding like hugging me and say, don't tell my wife I'm crying.
That song really means a lot tome. And it's like, you know,
dads and daughters and mothers and it'sjust hitting everybody. And I love
the message of it, you know, and being on country radio of just
saying, you know, treat herright right, women know you're worth too,
And and I think There's not alot of songs that say that right
(07:33):
now, So to know the messageof the song is, you know,
treat treat women right and with respect, and I think that's really important.
Country Born is the album. AndI'm gonna preface this by saying he's one
of my best friends, so Imight be a little bit by us.
Whatever you want an album, ifyou want an album that is that you
can tell your friends like, hey, you got to hear this guy,
like feel like you heard it beforeanybody else. Country Born is that album.
(07:55):
Like I listened to it head totoe all the time a little bit.
One of my favorites. I'm aand Mom and Them I told I
listened to that one. Mom andThem is a good one. But she's
somebody's daughter is on the Country Bornalbum. And definitely look Drew Baldridge up
this guy. He's on the verge, I guess we'll say. And and
just an incredible human being, incredibleartist, and we're so excited to have
(08:16):
you in man Man, Well, thank you guys for letting me tell my
story and talk about the song. And I'm excited to be here in Atlanta.
I wouldn't I wouldn't be good ifI didn't ask you how lyric was
doing. Oh yeah, so thelyrics. My little baby boy's ten months
old and just a couple of days, and so this has been hard.
You know, we're out doing radiotour and for those people out there that
don't know what that is is whenyou send a song to radio, you
got to go around the country andmeet all radio stations. And so I'm
(08:39):
watching him grow up a little bitfrom FaceTime, which is a little hard
on me. But I have anawesome wife and she's a rock star and
taking care of him. But he'she's a lot of fun. You know,
he's like walking almost now, youknow. He can hold onto couches
and walk down and makes me smilejust a lot. Well, thank you
for us being one of the firstpeople you told there. Yeah yeah,
(09:00):
literally, Otis literally came in ourhouse and he was passing through Nashville and
his wife, his wife, Brittwas there, and uh, you know,
we were just talking and I don'teven know how it came about,
but your wife was just like,I think you're pregnant. She predicts.
Yeah, no, no joke,I'm not joke. Terrifying to other people.
And we were like, uh,yes, we are. How did
(09:22):
you know? And she was like, well, I just predicted it so
much. I actually have a babyOnesie out in the car and goes out
and gets it wow and brings inthis baby Onesie. It's crazy. And
she was like, here, here'syour first present. Here's your first baby
Onesie. My favorite video recently isI think Katie put it up. But
he was strumming your guitar as youwere sitting there playing. Oh man,
he loves music. And that's what'sso cool is I can get my guitar
(09:43):
out and it stops him in histracks. And we noticed that because my
wife loves watching Friends, which Ioh my goodness, I've seen so many
Friends episodes. But as soon asthe intro comes on, he's like look
and yeah, exactly, he stopsand he's like, watches all the intros.
So I got my guitar out andplaying it. He just walked walks
right or crawls right over and getsup and just starts strumming my guitar and
hitting on it. And it's justit's really special. All right. You
(10:07):
know. I always throw ideas forsongs out to you because I love I
was gonna stick one of these days, playing my guitar. Just take that
that time. Okay, playing myguitar. I love it. Let's let's
work through that way opening for ittoo, Drew Baldridge. She's somebody's daughter.
It's the one you definitely want tostream because everybody else is. Thank
you, Drew, Thanks guys,
