(00:00):
Hey, what's up everybody? Iam Johnny Wizzo. I'm sitting here tonight
with mister Chris Beckins. He's thepresident of the Long Old Debate. He's
been a long time motorcycle writer. He likes to do long distance, short
distance, whatever it is. ChrisBeckins loves it and he's part of the
(00:21):
Motorcycle Mayhem radio show. So youall listening to Motorcycle Mayhem Radio and I
got mister Chris Beckins with me.What's up, Chris? What's up,
Johnny? How you doing? Man? The weather has been beautiful and what
Oh it's crazy, It's awesome. So now riding season has started. I
mean for some people who never endsa right like, what do you what
do you consider a fair riding seasonfor a normal writer? From what month
(00:47):
to one month? From what monthfrom one month? Well, depending on
the snow and the weather. Um, I mean, I say, from
January to December. Yeah. Haveyou ever been all twelve? I do?
I have? Yes, absolutely,I've been in the snow, I've
been in the ice. I dida lot of Biden, but I prefer
(01:07):
me personally sixty five. Between sixtyfive and eighty two, it's perfect weather.
For me. There you go,you know, I mean, I
mean, I mean I've written inlower and higher weather obviously, but a
perfect weather is abound sixty seven anda half. Well, if you have
a jacket on, yeah you cando that, you know. Yeah,
I mean I did cross country. It was like ninety degrees. I still
(01:30):
have my leather on. You know. It's it's when you're moving, it's
not too bad. But a minuteyou take it off, you gotta toss.
So you stop off, you absolutelyhave to. I mean I think
cycle Fish has it. The chart, yes, where where the weather chart?
Like wind temperature the wind temperature chart, right, that's pretty intervesting stuff
too, right, Yeah, it'sactually pretty neat. And and what,
contrary to popular belief, when you'rereally fast, it doesn't make you any
(01:52):
warmer. No, definitely not,it doesn't. So you've written all over
this country, right, it meana lot of places you've written at to
California from New York. Absolutely,So you know what, let's dedicate this
show to your ride of course country. I mean, I've done some runs,
but I don't think i've done asmoney as you have. I know
I haven't. I know you riddento California. Well, now, how
(02:15):
did you How did you come upwith this trip just to California. I
guess, you know, it justhappened. It's something I've always wanted to
do for my fiftieth I just decidedto put this together. And we started
out with five of us. Twoof us were older and have experience with
this trip once before. They didit ten years prior. It was Uncle
(02:36):
Freddy and his cousin and it wasit was awesome. We we started out,
we went here in Long Island,we went down to Virginia, We
picked up Uncle Freddie down to Virginia, and then we proceeded down to forty
and took forty across the country. It was yeah, it was really nice.
The weather was great. It wasit was the end of May,
beginning of June. By the timewe got back it was June. We
(02:59):
spent twenty three days on the bike. You know there were days three days.
Yeah. Now, let me askyou a question. That's twenty three
nights as well, twenty two nightsactually right, yeah, Now every night
hotels? Did you do a roughcampus hotel that every night you get that's
a that's an expensive trip, man, Believe it or not. It's not
as expensive as you think because whenyou're going across country and you got three
(03:21):
people, when you're sharing a room, you know, you split it.
So if it's even if it's seventyfive dollars for the night, you're not
staying in the taj Mahal. You'restaying in hotels on the side of the
road. As long as you don'thave any uh uh extracurricular activity, you
know, it's not that bad.You know, twenty five dollars a night's
not a lot of money for aroom, you know, and you're only
sleeping there. I mean, you'reon the bike. That's show probably about
(03:42):
twelve hours of the day, youknow, so when you're done, you
want to get something to eat,you want to crash or shower, a
crash and then and that's it.You know. Now, how many miles
a day were you doing about? It was a hard cell. It depends.
There are days we did four hundredand fifty and then his days we
did one hundred and twenty. Okay, well, depends on where we went.
I mean, I think that's thebeautiful part about being on a motorcycle
(04:03):
because they like you're driving a car, and you're doing these miles and you're
falling asleep and it's boiling. Likelike you said, what's your famous word?
You say, just slang your termabout ding a motorcycles like being in
a movie. Right when you're drivinga car, you're watching the movie.
When you're on a bike, you'rein the movie. Absolutely And you know
(04:26):
what me before, Like my bigtrip, I did two big trips in
my life. My big trip wasI rode from Long Island to a middle
beach. Nice. We did thatthe right way, and the weather wasn't
good, but we did it theright way. We it was four of
us me U you do, Luckyfrom the Vets right, Me, Lucky,
Mikey and a friend of mine thatpassed away, Darlin. We we
(04:47):
left on Saturday morning, I remember, and we rode down the Jersey Shore
all the way to the big ferryin Kpe May. I took that ferry
down to the bottom of Delaware andthen we rode around getting into Melton and
we spent the first night there. So we really did a lot of miles
a day. It was a greatride. And I remember we saying that
(05:09):
it's really really bad hotel, andit actually bront down now for what I
heard. And then they had umthey had. We had a nice little
dinner and then we hung out, like you know, it was really cool
outside the hotel rooms. Yeah, you drink a few beers. You're not
riding anymore. You're don't ride itfor the day. So you got your
beard, you're hanging out, yougot your feet up, and you're telling
(05:29):
funny stories. You're reminiscent about theride, which is an awesome night.
And then you just stopped dropping likeflies. This one's tied. That one's
time. And I remember waking upthe next day about six story in the
morning, not my choice, bythe way, And we had across the
Chesapeake Memorial Bridge and Tunnel. Awwhat a ride because you're riding and you
(05:54):
see a ship right in front ofyou, right in front of you,
and you get a run of rightinto it. Also you go down on
the water up and they come backoff the other side. It's just behind
you now, ye, I mean, it was such an outrageous ride to
experience all that, you know whatI mean. Funny story about that bridge,
Okay, people actually pay to havepeople drive them across that bridge.
(06:14):
I heard about that it's a certainphobia. I don't know what it is,
what it's called. Well, butpeople pay like fifteen dollars bushes.
Back in the day, it waslike fifteen dollars to be we're driven across
in your own car. Wasn't thatbridge like forty miles long? It's not.
Don't know if it's forty miles long, but it's long. Yeah,
it's definitely well, I mean fromend to end. I mean going over
land and then over the water. We gotta google that one day, I
(06:34):
know, what's I know, it'sbig. You know, I'm so he's
gonna google it right now. pHAbsolutely, But um, we crossed that
bridge and tunnel. Did you crossit when you got there? Yeah,
we gotta cross that bridge when wegot there too. Yeah, that bridge
when we get there, and Iremember the only problem that we had is
it rain the whole time, allright, And that wasn't fun. That
(06:56):
wasn't a fun part of the trip. That's not a good time to be
on that bridge. No, it'snot. I remember it was windy.
I got a video of it someway. I gotta find that video to
actually seventeen point six months I wasway off. Yeah, A little bit
because it was rainy and you weregoing really slow. Maybe it was that
long felt that way, and Iremember we had to pull up at ring
gear on, but I remember gettingto the other side and then we had
to go through the bottom of Marylandbasically like the Ocean city and all.
(07:20):
That was really awesome. But thesand was a factor because the sand would
blow in the wind and would hitus, and and it was it was
bad. It really was. Youknow, well, it's good for exfolio
in your face. Yeah, absolutely, And but it was a fun trip
because it was four guys that wanteda rush, you know what I mean.
So we stopped, got a ringgear on, and did all that
(07:42):
stuff. But I'm gonna have moreof this story, and Chris gonna have
more his story on his trip toCalifornia when we come back from break.
I am Johnny Rizzo. I'm sittinghere with Chris Beckins tonight. We have

(09:28):
with Chris Beckins, we are MotorcycleMahem Radio. Definitely check out our website
at Motorcyclemahem radio dot Com. SoI want to sit again talking about some
rides that we've taken over the years. And I was telling a story.
I will get back to Chris's storythe California in the second. I kind
of took all of them. Butanyway, Um, so Chris said,
we got over the bridge, andI am saying, We're riding through Ocean
(09:50):
City. Looked like a really funspot to hang out. Now. You
see all like the boardwalks, yousee all the game rooms, you know,
the peers, a lot of stuffthat I'm dying to do a bike
week down there. At one timethey had that bike week done there that
I would love to get to.So I remember that not that night.
Now, we had to make itto the out of Banks. That's what
(10:13):
we were doing. So what wedid was we got to uh, what
was the name of that town? You remember? Ah? But anyway,
we got to this town where wehad to take a ferry and that's good.
No, no, no, theyhave to came in Maryland, now,
don't we're going out there. We'regoing out to the out of Banks
because we took the out of Banksaround, you know what I mean.
(10:33):
So we went to Um, somethingkilled I can't remember the name of it,
but whatever. Um. So wewent around and around all these ferries
that were waining the whole time. That was the only bad thing about this
trip. So also we get tothe last island that we had to go
on and we had to take aboat back to the mainland. Okay,
(10:54):
So what happened was we're getting onthis boat and I'll tell you something.
You ever take the ferries from theisland. Yes, not much bigger than
the hat And there's the same kindof ferry where the bikes were outside,
and they had that one where thecaptain thing is inside with a little cabin.
No bigger than this rumor in rightnow. So I remember we got
on this ferry. It was thefour of us and the weather was so
(11:16):
bad because they were saying there wasa hurricane that was hidden outside. I
gout in the ocean somewhere over thecoast of North Carolina. So the waves
were like eight foot waves that werein and the captain said, guys,
you do have to stand by yourbikes. You can't leave the bikes alone
because they're gonna fall over because thisboat. And my friend Mikey did not
(11:39):
like water, did not like boatsat all. He was, and you
couldn't see land. You couldn't seethe land where we were. We were
that fall out and it took usabout four hours if I remember correctly,
because of the weather to get backto the mainland. And Mikey was inside
the cabin is laying down. Youcouldn't look. I don't want to see
what's going on. And I'm like, Mike, you gotta come outside.
(12:01):
You're gonna get sick in here.So what happened was, um, we
finally land are more Head City,North Carolina, and we're getting the bikes
off the off the boat and Mikey'sbike is flooded because it was on the
water because the water waves are comingover the boat. It was, it
(12:22):
was. It was bad. Sowe had to do a an operational well
not macause I can't take it tothis, you know that. But the
guy who mechanically inclined fixed his bike. They got his bike on it.
Whatever, they got a run.So we ended up at this hotel I
forget. It was called the Buccaneer. This hotel was a big ship looking
boat. It looked like it wasa hotel. So we spent the night
(12:43):
there and that night, we justwe just parted it the whole night and
it was an amazing night. Foundthe best pizza Rea over there that we
all went nuts over. And Iremember waking up the next day and we
all took all like we got tworooms because there was four of us to
two in his room. Two androom. So we found the bucket.
The buckets are garbage pails, putthem the shampoo in there, and we
(13:05):
washed all the bikes. And thelandscapers were there that day, so we
were able to dry the bikes offwith their with their blowers right. So
it was a great and it reallywas a great trip. It was a
learning experience for me because the guyDarwin who passed away, Now, like
Johnny, you earned your water wingsbecause we rode in a lot of rain,
through puddles all that stuff. Sothen we get to the next day,
(13:28):
we get the Myrtle Beach and wespent four days there whatever it was.
So now we're gonna come home.So Mima and mint Adam have a
plan. Okay, the plan isit's Friday. We're leaving Myrtle Beach on
Friday. We're gonna get to Baltimoreto the Inner Harbor. No, no,
(13:50):
it was Thursday. We left Friday. No, no, Friday,
we're leaving Myrtle and Friday night we'regonna be in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore.
We're gonna spend the night. Youever got into harbor? Yeah,
it's outrage. It's like kind oflike Times Square put on the water.
It's awesome over them. So ourfirst night is to be at the Inner
Harbor. Boom, okay, nice. We're gonna hang out and party there
(14:11):
all night, and then Saturday nightwe're gonna go to All City Saturday night,
Alan City, and Sunday we're gonnaride home. Wow, that would
have play, dude. It rainedso hard, It rained so hard that
we had to get a hotel room. We didn't want to do. We
never made it at like we madeat us South Carolina. We got into
(14:33):
what was that movie um with Robertde Niro. That's where we stayed for
the night. What was that moviecalled I don't have a bad memory today?
And we stayed in North Carolina tonight and we tried to get the
bikes into the hotel room. Iremember we tried to get him into fit
into the room. That hard,so basically, we spent the night there
(14:56):
at eight dollar those pizza or whatever, and then the next night we got
to the Baltimore Harbor on Saturday night. We never went to Last City and
we got home on Sunday. Itwas a great trip. It was a
great learning experience for me. Andyou know what the best part about it
is we stayed off the big roadson the way home. We got a
nine to five is bailed, youknow, but I think of a trip
like you took, you know, you took forty. Of course, was
(15:20):
there any alternatives like taking smaller roads, like like a route one that route
won't take down to the south,I know, but you know, you
know what, we actually didn't reallydeviate from it because we kind of had
a set amount of days to beback and I had to be back for
work. One of the other guysI was with had to be back.
So we put a time limit oncoming back. We had to no matter
(15:43):
how long it took us to getout there, we had to be back
at a certain time. Okay,So we took our chance, you know,
we took our time going out there. We stopped a few places we
would rotate places of interest. Yeah, that's school, so we're gonna get
more on your story. I wantto finish up. There's next segment where
your trip to Californ Only it soundslike it was an awesome time, so
I'll stick with us, guys.I am Johnny Rizzo. This is Months

(18:00):
us Tonight? I got Chris Beckinswith me in the studio and mons like
a man radio and he's telling usa story about he took his trip to
California. So continue what you weresaying, Christ You know the roads that
you chose to take on the waydown there, Well, we decided forty
forty was a pretty easy ride goingback, even though it was in this
interstate. There was a lot ofthings along the way that we could use
(18:22):
to stop at because we each tookturns as to like points of interest.
Since there was five of us,we each rotated things that we wanted to
do and see on along the way. But that's the big thing, my
dear, five people, and whogo to the bathroom, who needs gas,
who's hungry? You know what Imean? And to do a ship
like that, twenty three days isn'treally that long. You learn a lot
about people in twenty three days,I can imagine, I can imagine.
(18:47):
Right, So, you know,so you did you have any problems with
the pikes from anything? Not untilabout three quarters of the way through,
actually the two thirds of the waythrough, we were fine. We stopped
along the way, we went downTomarillo. We had a couple of interactions
with some of the local working girls, which is actually very funny, really,
Yeah. She one girl was listeningwith my friends while they were back
at the hotel, and I gotI was out getting dinner with two of
(19:10):
the other fellas, and it was, from what I heard, very funny.
Nothing ever happened, but it wasvery funny. You know what looked
like a beautiful hotel because we alsorotated who picked the hotel? Really,
so my one friend or one friendpicked this really awesome sleep America hotel,
I mean marble and the lobby I'mbecome beautiful turned around a corner you were
in like Bayrout. You know, the hotel was sleazy. Every horizontal surface
(19:34):
had a burnmark in it. Ohmy god. You know, dirt parking
lot just like ten feet away fromthe parking spaces. So it was really
a less than desirable facility. Buthey, it had a bed, the
sheets were clean, and most partthe plumbing, the plumbing works for the
moment, Yeah, well that thewhole day, I mean, doing the
trip with five guys. You know, who picked dinner tonight? Because I'm
(19:56):
sure I'm gonna move a pasta.I'm gonna move for ribs. You know,
I'm sure that was any I'll giveme so long the way without fighting
it all, no real fights, but there was definitely some personality interactions,
right right, Yeah, I expectthat though, you know, yeah,
it's odd. I recommend going awaywith an even number of folks, yea,
out of what you do, becausethere's always one person left out when
you have an odd number. Butwe had a great time. We stopped
(20:18):
it. Like I said, Amarilla, we we we battled tornadoes. Hal
really yeah. We got we gotlost. We separated in Texas. We
got separated. You're hearing these sirensgoing off, and it's like tornado warnings,
you know which. We have noidea. We're from Long Island,
New York, have no idea aboutthese things. The next morning, after
we finally hooked up and got aplace to stay, it was like coming
(20:40):
out of the day of the dayafter of you know, apocalypse. I
mean, the sun came out ofbeautiful. You're riding down the road track
to trailers and just laying on theirsides because they got they got blown over.
Wow, with no skid marks,no nothing. It was just like
one of those things. Get offthe road. Hope's too late. Sorry,
by click on your side. That'sit. Wow. You know.
We stopped Grand Canyon and then wedropped down to ten went into southern California.
(21:04):
You know, and there's there's eacheach segment of this trip has a
story. Yea, somewhere somehow there'sa story, whether it's us getting lost,
almost running out of gas. Also, who didn't almost make it to
the bathroom. We did make itto the bathroom and blew it up this
stories? I mean, we couldtalk, I mean twenty three days.
Why the stories. Each segment ofthis show could be a story of a
(21:26):
day because there's always something who's gettingmad at me for driving too long because
they want to be in the hotel? Who's going too fast? Not a
fast thing? Wasn't so bad. That wasn't a big big topic. That
more about the darken than wildness.Because when you're out there, you're doing
eighty miles an hour in the interstateand you got like buffalo. You know,
you don't hit a buffalo. Youbecome part of the muff and the
(21:48):
two years don't fare that ride verywell. Now, that's that's the problem,
my dere But it was. Itwas amazing, It really was.
Northern California is absolutely beautiful. Wewent on and off Coast Highway pretty much
all of californ On you we gotto one area where there was a mud
slide forty miles in we had toturn around and go back, you know,
so then we had to go backup another forty miles on I think
it was one on one, um, you know. And then we took
(22:11):
ninety after we went through the redWoods down to set to eighty and then
eighty and to seventy. We tookseventy back into Virginia and dropped Uncle off
and then came home. Wow,but it was, it was, It
was absolutely amazing. It's it's definitelyonce in a lifetime thing. You got
to do it, you know, after all my bucket lists get out the
California. We could have doubled thelength of this trip and still had not
had enough time to do everything. But there's so many things if you seriously
(22:33):
put your mind to it, there'sso many points of interest across this country
that nobody even knows exist. Ican only imagine. I mean, just
a place that you can stop andsee and experience. And twenty three three
days isn't really that long of atime you think about, No, it's
not. It's a living over threeweeks. You know. We standing on
the corner winds of Arizona. Youknow that was kind of mean, and
(22:53):
you don't know, don't you know. That's also the thing because there could
be things that could be fifty milesthat way and fifty miles that way.
I can throw you off a wholeother courts. So what would you gotta
do? Go left to go right? And they got five guys. I
want to go this way, Iwant to go that way. That's that's
something that you have to have meetingswith, sit down, have dinner.
(23:15):
This is what we're doing, youknow, John mcgraff, I do you
know my friend John mcgraff. Hewas big with the hogs of Miracle Mile
and all that stuff, and heum he did a trip out of California,
and I remember I never got todo any watching him like that because
they were gonna be gone for monthsat a time. And I remember sitting
in a couple of meetings were justwe're friends, were my neighbor, and
(23:37):
watching all these guys and he wouldhave everything witten out, but he was
strict. It was like to themile through the gas down. You know,
this is what we're doing. We'restopping here. Yeah, And I
see I'm the same way. Youknow, when me and my buddy just
did that trip to um Wisconsin lastJuly, and we had new plan.
(23:59):
All we knew that were really gohere, we'll go there, we'll go
there. How long is it gonnatake us, dear? We had no
idea and you know, did wewant to stop somewhere along the way.
So we did it. That's thebest part. Now, if you have
like a full month to do thistrip. How long did I actually take
you to get to California? Ittook us about seven days? Yeah,
seven eight days, Yeah, becausewe stopped at Grand Canyon. We you
(24:22):
know, we did some sight seeingthere. We looked for the Cadillac Ranch
and realized we passed it. Um, it was really it was. It
was a good time. You spenta lot of time. We actually took
us four days to get out ofCalifornia because we had family there. We
were visiting. Okay, you know, my one friend's niece was there's um
you know, she's in southern calOver and Ventura, and then my friend's
(24:44):
mother buddy's daughter lived there. Solike that's the day. We did one
hundred miles. Okay, we spenteight hours hanging out with everybody each time.
Before you know it, it wastime to go to bed. Yeah,
there you go. And California isa big state. Oh absolutely,
So we're gonna actually continue this conversationwith Chris about his trip to California.

eight days to get to California, right, took us another four days to
get out of California. So whatyou did? You went down in southern
California, rode up. Yeah, yeah, we went down from forty dropped
it down to town. After weleft the Grand Canyon, we were gonna
go to Tijuana. Unfortunately some ofus were not prepared for that. I
understand. Um, no papers,we had no papers, we had no
(27:33):
no border crossing that you're not coming. We opted out of that. But
yeah, then we did. Wedid the Coast Highway thing, you know,
San San Francisco. Actually it's prettyfunny. We went over to Golden
Gate Bridge. We stopped to takea picture. We became this probably most
popular people on the bridge because thelaw enforcement was there. You can't stop
here. You can't take pictures ofthe bridge. You know, it's like
(27:55):
a federal offense. They have signs. They got very offended by that.
They all signs on the wash somebridge about out. Yeah, yeah,
camerons. Well I figured that's GeorgeWashington. You know it's a bridge.
Yeah, funny about that, huh. But yeah, they didn't take that
too too kindly. So we endedup having to leave there. Um,
and then like you said, wewent up to the Redwoods. The Coast
(28:15):
Highway northern California is absolutely absolutely amazing. It is. You know what's amazing
is you could be on the coastand it's forty five degrees and you go
inland and it's ninety happen. Itis so crazy, and there's no spots
in California. You see mountains therestole on top. Absolutely California's only state
you can definitely ski and swim inthe same day, right, that's amazing
(28:36):
stuff. Yeah, it's pretty well, that's amazing stuff out of the try
that one day. But the tripsounds like it was an awesome trip.
It was. It really was amazing. We we, like I said,
we rotated. We each had stuffwe had to see. We wanted to
see along the way. On theway out there, we wanted to go
to or should say, I wantedto go to um uh that's it called
tom Nashville and what's the other oneNeshville and Ellis lives. No, the
(29:03):
other the other foodie not Nashville. What's the other one in New Orleans?
No? No, that that wouldhave been great. We would probably never
left. But yeah, I wantedto go to Nashville and Memphis. That's
well Elvis lives. Yeah yeah, well he's dead so he doesn't live.
But uh yeah, we wanted togo there. But unfortunately it poured.
Oh yeah, yeah great, Sonow you're on the bike. Now you're
(29:23):
gonna get off the bike, stayin the rain, walk around the town
and like this isn't fun. Sowe just went down to Beal Street,
took a couple of pictures and split. Yeah, what actually gotta do?
I mean, it's that's a bigyou know factor in a ride like that
is the weatherly And you have tobe mentally prepared for a vide like this
too, because you know you're gonnabe go off for twenty three days,
(29:44):
yeah, and twenty two nights. Is you know sleeping out somewhere? Well
did you? Did you have aand that plan? Like, we know
we're gonna make it to this hotel. We pulled the hotel. Know the
two that was with us that didit ten years prior they did that,
they actually set off. It waslike it was a romantic trip. The
two of them went out there andthey brought tan stay, We're gonna rough
(30:07):
it. They were gonna have agreat time. After the time they stopped.
The second time, they found theups store, sent the tents and
stuff back, and they started hotelingit. Yeah. I don't blame them,
but they are very structured, veryorganized, So they put plan the
night before what they were doing. That's not how we worked, right.
We got the term the name freestylersfor a reason. We'd get up in
the morning, have breakfast, I'dlook at the map and go, okay,
(30:30):
this is where we're gonna go mayberight right, So we get about
halfway there. How you make anout We're doing good, all right?
Yeah, we gotta stop soon,or we're gonna keep going, or we
keep going to talk about it,then get yelled at because we passed the
tell that should have been fifty milesback right right right? Yeah, you
know what I mean. A triplike that you can't plan because you never
know what could happen. Who amI get a blowout? Well not guess
(30:52):
you never know. We got storiesabout that. We've got a bad stomach
that day, we bit chicken thatnight, stories about that. I mean,
you got them. You got thestories. I mean, but you
know there is the problem is it'slike somebody like me who one of the
reasons why I got into writing isbecause of the movie Wild Hogs. So
people think that's the way it is, that's the wild house is the way
(31:15):
it's gonna be. When you geton the road. It can be,
Yeah, it could be, butit cannot be. Yeah you know what
I mean. I mean, rememberthey redid those shots over and over again
before they got it right. You'regetting one shot at this, yeah,
you know what I mean. Yeah, and you're out in the middle of
nowhere. So if something happens ifsomething goes wrong, you know, you
got to think that the consideration. You know, vehicle maintenance. You got
(31:36):
a plan that along the way, because it's eighty five miles. You're not
gonna go there and back without doinganything to your motorcycle, right, you
know, oil change or something,Yeah, definite oil change. You know.
You want to make sure you're tired. You always got to check the
bike over before you get on itevery day because you're on it for the
whole day, you know, soyou want to make sure the bike is
in tiptop shape. You want tomake sure you're you're in good shape.
And you also gotta be alert.Yeah, well you gotta get a good
night's sleep. You gotta get rest, you know. But the week before
(32:00):
you try to like not stay uplate and wear yourself out. You try
to get rested because when you're onthe bike, it's all game, it's
all all bets are off. Yougotta be safe, you gotta be aware,
you gonna be alert. What wouldyour speed do you think you were
averaging doing that ride? You know, it depends out west. It's there's
been sometimes we were doing eighty ninety, you know, but so is everybody
(32:21):
else. Right, you know, you're out in the middle of nowhere,
Texas. There in spots of Texasthere is no speed limit. Wow.
Really yeah, we didn't actually geton that road, but there's nothing out
there. You're doing eighty miles anhour and attracted trails going by you like
you're going backwards. Wow. Youknow, so you gotta watch you gonna
be careful. I felt that whenI did the ride out there Wisconsin.
You know, I I found myselfdoing ninety five miles an hour. You
(32:43):
don't feel it, you don't realizeit because and then when you slowed out
to the actual speed limit, you'relike, wow, this is really the
speed limit. Yeah, but youknow, you don't realize how fast you're
going. You don't you look downand speed hominant And then no, I
don't know about you, but Ithink a stupid things in them riding like
I'm And also they started worrying abouta deer jumping out of funny. Yeah,
then you start went, well, what don't they get a front blowout?
(33:05):
Right now? I'm doing ninety finalsan hour. You know, I
start thinking about these stupid things thatyou know, it's good to think about
it. And then then then youdon't want to slow down to seventy five
because once you do that, becauseyou're thinking about these stupid things, you're
like, well, am I gettingnowhere? Now? I gotta move,
We gotta go, we gotta go, you know what I mean? So
I understand that my trip that Itook was all mostly on big roads,
(33:30):
right, which isn't that fun?You know, to go to Wisconsin eighty
pretty much you want to take fortysix out I'll fighting again. Yeah,
eighty is probably the most boring roadgoing on out there. Do you know,
here's a trivia question for people outthere with the longest route in the
United States is by way? Doyou know what it is? If I
(33:50):
had the guests, let's say eighty. No, it's not ninety nine the
longest because eighty starts in Jersey, right, and ninety actually goes into eighties,
so I guess they count that aspart of it. Yeah, and
then ninety actually started it up inMassachusetts, right, so you know a
lot. Yeah, that's the NorthWay up there in New York. Yeah,
yeah, the way. But yeah, So I love the concept of
riding cross country, and I gottado it one day for me it's time,
(34:15):
so you either take over twenty threeday, three weeks. That's tough
man financially, I mean, yougotta be have money to bank you're planning
on. I mean I got paidpaid vacations, so you got paid while
I went, you know, puta few bucks aside for the for the
incidentals. I mean, I hadmy had my share issues. You know,
I had a bike that had Idon't know, seventy thousand miles on
it when I went cross country. You know, I tuned it. I
(34:37):
spent a lot of time prepping itfor the trip. You know, new
tires. You know, I didthe updated attention is on it. You
know, to know six electric glideand me and that bike have a lot
a lot of miles on it.Um, we had an issue, you
know, we were down the MountRushmore. We lost the lost oil pressure.
Wow, yeah, that's good.No, I thought it was a
sending unit and it wasn't. Andyou know what, you always had to
(34:58):
preparefully unexpected. When we come backfrom commercial I got a story to tell

boom, we are back. Ilove that song. Good stuff, right,
(37:13):
Chris, Oh right, man.So we were talking about Chris's trip
across the United States to California, and uh, call my little stories,
but my little ride, I've takena lot of good stuff. But you
know what, I'll tell you astory, Chris, that's kind of sad.
I don't know if you remember them. I'm not gonna ask you,
I'm not gonna mention no names. But what happened was, um, this
(37:36):
group of guys, like five guysthat think it was four or five guys.
They planned the trip to California,Okay, and they they planned this
trip for months, months, sittingdown, having meetings every week. And
what happened was they shipped their bikesout to California. Oh yeah, I
remember the story. And they flewout there to get the bikes. And
(37:58):
I remember following them on Facebook andit was really cool, like they would
go live, we're doing this,We're doing that. They're on the airplane
laughing, have a good time. And also the next video I see,
you see him walking towards the bike. They got the bike, they walk
to the device and we'll be backand they actually, you know, I
see the post like not even anhour later of the woman saying, my
husband passed away today. What what? That makes no sense? And what
(38:23):
happened was he? Uh? Ithink he had some kind of heart attack
or something. Yeah, it wasa medical event. Yeah, and he
had a head on collision with acar and he died right there. So
now the question I have is therest of the guys, what do you
do? What do you do?And that that that that happened, what
happens next? So I think inhonor of him, they finished the ride.
(38:45):
I was just saying that all dependsbecause you got you gotta know the
situation. You know, there's somuch more to it than that. You
know, it's not a yes orno answer. I mean everything relative at
the time determines what you do next. Yeah, I mean, I think
in honor of him, they hadthe whole thing about sixty six, you
know, then stab the other thingthey're gonna do. They want to stop
(39:07):
the Grand Canyon, all that stuff, And I think in honor of him,
that's what they did, right,And I think that's the right thing
to do. I mean, youknow, this is months of planning,
money spent. You know, you'reout there. I mean, do it
arrive? Yeah, and now yougot you dedicated him? Yeah? Absolutely?
(39:27):
You know. So so you didthis California trip and you're back in
twenty three days. Have you everdone any other trips that come close to
that? No, not even alittle bit. No. Yeah, we've
done you know, long distance rides. I've done Iowa, I've done Indianapolis,
We've done Myrtle Beach, We've doneFlorida, We've done Maine, Virginia.
(39:50):
You know, it's probably thirty Idon't know we've had the guests thirty
eight states so far. Wow.Yeah, it's definitely great. There's so
much cool stuff outside of here,Like when you get out a comfort zone
and you get like anywhere west ofNew York. Yeah, it's so cool.
People is so great. They're sowarm and welcoming. You know.
The motorcycle brings you together, youknow, with these people, you all
(40:10):
have something in common. You stopby the local you know, whether it
be tavern, restaurant, whatever.Yeah, and it's like you're part of
them, except when they open yourmouth and you hear your talk and then
they know you're from New York.Oh yeah, absolutely, the accent that
we don't have that everybody else says. You know, it's a brotherhood and
it's an awesome brotherhood. And asa brotherhood that goes no matta where you
(40:31):
live, you know, you gotyou got something in common, you know,
and it's it's awesome the thing tohave. Oh absolutely. We were
at a couple of places. Oneof them is like the Silver Silver Spur
or something, so a mother daughterbartender, you know, is a local
town. They found out that wewere from New York. Next to you
know, people are buying the shots. We're hanging out taking pictures. You
(40:52):
know, it's like with celebrities, but with nobody, right, just knuckleheads
on motorcycles going across country. Absolutely, and you know what's cool too,
it's like to do what chip likethat that there's events going on to stop
at, you know, like wedid the trip around the Lake Lake Michigan,
right, we wanted to go tothe Holi dealer. That was a
big thing. So we rode andthere was actually a bike event called the
Moskegan Bike Event the water Shore inPennsylvania. Bike Time did one of them
(41:21):
called bike Time what they have there, and they had the other event that
was going on. So we gotto stop there, spend the day there
checking out the awesome bike event thatwas going on and checking out all the
bike shows and all the cool stuffthat was happening in that town. You
know what I mean. Yeah,So just you know, just to experience
all the towns and how all thepeople live and riding around the lake was
(41:42):
a cool thing. And like yousaid, we did it twice. The
first year we went up up northand they came around south to come back.
The second year we went straight ofcourse and went up on the other
side. It came back down southon the Michigan side, which was the
right way to do it, right, That's cool. It's the first time
we did it. We were raisingagainst the clock because we against the ferry
(42:04):
on the way back right, andthat was horrible. Yeah, you know,
I mean the fact it was coolthough, Just the story to tell
though, because when you make adecision to do something like this, anything
that goes with that decision is partof it. So you have to embrace
it exactly. You know. It'sjust the way it is, exactly a
lot you want to have fun,to enjoy it, you gotta roll with
it, absolutely, I agree, and make the best out of it.
You know, sometimes when you ridelike that, just stop and look around,
(42:29):
take a deep breath, and enjoythe moment absolutely, because you know
what, you can take a millionpictures, but nothing going to come close
to the real thing that's happening infront of your face right there, you
know, enjoying the wind blowing throughyour face, the wind therapy that's happening
to you right there, all thecool stuff, the smells smells, Yeah
we're not talking like New Jersey smells. We're talking about food really, I
(42:52):
mean everything from food to the wildflowers to what's now legal in a lot
of states. You know, itis a lot of different friend And that's
like I said, that's like partof being in the movie. You know,
when you're on the bike, youget to feel all that and you
don't you know, the ac crankingin the car with you. You know,
you're old lady smoking a cigarette,or you know you're fighting over the
(43:13):
radio state. You're on your own. You're in your own world and you're
living it. It's awesome and that'sthe best part, you know. Yeah,
and even what the smells I'm saying. Yeah, I like to talk
about food crispy and all that. No, but you're going by the barbecue
place, the fire pits, thesmell of the salt water depending on where
you are, even the forest firesin California. Yeah, even Lake Michigan
(43:37):
has a smell. Oh, absolutely, the fresh water lake. It's all
the smells that you experience and thethings that you can see. You guys
driving the cars boring, man, that's boring stuff. You want to be
out on the open road enjoying everybit all this rod you can. That's
why I do it. And thebrotherhood's amazing. No matter why you stop
(43:58):
the other bikes, you got friends. Absolutely, you got friends and that
and that's the best part right there. You got friends. And if you
break down, how many people willstop to help you. Oh, it's
amazing. It absolutely is totally amazing. You know. It's not like New
York where you break down. Thereare some people that stop, don't get
me wrong, but in today's busylife here it's crazy. You know,
like people will they look and somepeople pull over and hey you okay,
(44:21):
yeah we're fine. Thanks. Oryou get people just like looking, go
wow, that's things and they driveright by you. You know, but
outside of this place start they seeyou on the side of the road,
Hey you need anything, Yeah,we're good, thanks, all right,
cool, and they go about theirbusiness. You want to take care of
you exactly. Man. That's thebest part too about being a biker.
You know, bikers help bikers andthey're a part of the community that it's
(44:42):
there for every charity that you canthink about, the bikers always the first
people to step up, ye right, you know what you put along on
the bait and that's all you dois help people. You want to help
people that have cancer. You wantto help people that are homeless, you
want to help the vets, youwant to help every aspect you can of
what you can do. And thatto me is why I love being a
(45:05):
biker and being part of the greatestcommunity that there is out there, Chris,
you know, and it's absolutely youknow, as a whole, bikers
are definitely the most giving and themost accommodating people. They do so much
for the community, you know, and we get a bad rap. I
mean, honestly, you know thatthey everybody thinks to you that the dirt
bag biker's that the thing. Butthere's lawyer's, doctors, independence clubs.
(45:29):
Everybody's different. We're all on twowheels doing our thing, and you know
what, it's just it's a greatcommunity, really is. Yeah. They
don't get no better than that,my friends, they don't get no better
than this. If we had icecream, it would be better. That
would be awesome. Right now,I'm sweating like a pick here, But

or check that out. And Chris, so, let's finish up in your
California trip. You had a lotof breakdowns and stuff, so tell us
a little bit about it. Ididn't have a lot, but we did
(48:52):
have one notable one and we lostsome oil pressure, at least we thought
was just a sending unit. Wechanged the sending unit and that wasn't it.
The oil I came on for awhile, probably about one hundred and
fifty two hundred miles, and thenit went out after he changed to send
the units. So I figured wefixed it wrong. After assessing the situation,
(49:14):
we realized we really had an oilpressure. Yeah. The oil oil
pressure relief out was sticking and themotor actually started getting a little noisy.
We went up to Mount Rushmore andat one point we had to keep the
bike around three thousand all pm.It's just we could have a little oil
pressures and zero. We ended upcalling Black Hills Holly Davidson, which I
(49:34):
got to give him a shout outbecause they did a dyning my job.
Yeah, they hooked me up.I called them up. They said,
yeah, I bring it in firstthing in the morning, seven o'clock.
I was at the door waiting forthem to open up. They had me
out the door by one thirty inthe afternoon and they did an oil pump,
the hydraulic upgrade. They did newlifters, a full service. All
three holes went over to bike headto toe and like I said, six
(49:57):
and a half hours and it wasunder two thousand dollars. It was amazing.
Wow, that's incredible. Amazing.Yeah. No, do you think
it's because of where you were thepieces were good or well, it was
a combination of things. Actually,I was told that if it was during
Sturges Bike Week, because Black HillsHolly's Intil Dakota, the labor rate would
have been another fifty dollars an hourbecause they bring in mechanics from all over
the country. They have hundreds ofmechanics there. They sell dozens of engines.
(50:22):
Believe it or not, they doquickling tires and loubes. And it
was amazing. The shop is huge. I mean it must be for a
location like that Black Hills. Howmany people must drive right through there going
to Sturges and continuing to go toCalifornia or whatever They go a lot.
It was a lot of And youknow what, unlike New York, they
(50:43):
actually make considerations for out of towners. You know, they actually keep a
table or two open just in case, you know, if they have regularly
scheduled work. They let the customersknow that, hey, if a guy
comes in off the road, we'regonna jump on him first. And like
I said, it was amazing. They got me in and out one,
two, three. Um. Youknow, if I was a resident in
South Dakota, I don't know thatthey would have been that fast. Yeah.
(51:04):
Man, maybe not, you know, but I'm sure they want to
put the variety on you because youwere out of stating blah blah blahm and
they want to the name. Theyget out there about being a great deal
of out there amazing dealer. Soyou know, a trip like this,
you got like five guys of riding, right, you know, obviously you
all have baggs. I'm gonna assumeyes, right, yes, you're like
one gout like hold of like toolsinto one bag just in case you could
(51:27):
do own tools. How you workedthat Outum, we kind of broke it
up a little bit. You know, I had the most tools with me.
My other friend Jimmy had his stuff. This one had an acho presser,
This one out of boost a pack, this one out of cell phone.
This one had nothing but things alittle tough to laugh about. You
know. One had a spare gascan. You know, so there's always
things even you don't even think aboutit. You've on your own until it
(51:49):
happened. We had some some wildhog moments ourselves where we're riding for like
forty miles on a half a tankof fuel. We got about fifty miles
left to go and the fuel tankand we got about seventy five miles to
go to the next gas station.Wow. So one of our friends,
Jimmy, comes rolling up behind us. He's like, you didn't see that
sign back there did you And likewhat sign? It's like, you guys
(52:13):
don't have enough gas to make it. We gotta go back. So now
we had to go thirty five milesback to where the first gas station was.
And it was just amazing. Wegot this little tiny gas station on
the side of the road. Ithad the antique pumps. You turned the
pump on and it would take foreverto roll on and you had the woman
had to kick the pumps to makethe fuel. I mean, between the
(52:35):
five of us, we got aboutI don't know twelve dollars worth of fuel
out of this pump. Wow.You know, but it was hysterical.
It was just one of those momentsand it just added to the fun of
it. You know, it isexperienced. It something that might be serious
that day and kiss everybody off.You can look back now and laugh at
us. Oh my god, rememberthat. So yep, nobody got locked
up hospitalized. They're pregnant on thetrip, so we're good, especially the
(52:58):
pregnant part. That's good. Soyou know, I'm glad that you had
this trip and it was a goodtime. And uh, it's something that
you gotta get out there. Peoplegotta get out their bikes and experience.
The United States is beautiful here,so many places to go. You know,
you have another thing that you wantto do, another boocket list,
Uh ride Alaska, Alaska. Iknow two people that wrote last ten thousand
(53:21):
miles round trip. See, doyou have to you have to be retired,
you have to be I'm sorry,Well, you got to really plant
planet. Fortunately, I get likethirty four days off a year. That's
not bad. So I could think. At the same time, if I
if it was a special occasion andI planned ahead, they probably let me
because that's what they did. Itold him it was my fiftieth and they
let me take that those three weeksoff, you know, and then you
got weekends too, So weekends you'reonly working five days and you get two
(53:45):
days in between off. So ifyou're taking twenty five days off, you're
only taking twenty work days. That'sso you could take a month off.
Yeah, and that's only five weeks. That's that's And I was I could
do something like that to just toget out there and see the whole United
States. But you know, again, like you said, you gotta be
prepared of what you're doing. Yougotta you gotta know, you know,
(54:06):
would you have would you where you'regoing? You gotta you gotta have every
different thing that can happen to youevery situation. You know, it's weather,
a bad road, conditions, whateverit is. Yeah, there's a
couple of roads we went down thatthere was like caution signs, it was.
They were dirt roads for miles. You know, roads were wiped out.
We're on you know, bluestone fora good half a mile mile at
(54:30):
a time. You know, whenyou're out west and you hit avoid highways,
you gotta be careful because you doavoid highways. You know. I
went down a blue stone road, mccornfields on both sides, and if you're
by yourself, you're screwed. Ifsomething happens, you're not gonna find you
till the next guy goes down ablock. So that that that's something we
gotta take consideration though. Yeah,it's just you have to be prepared to
(54:52):
do it right. You have tobe prepared mentally, physically, emotionally,
monetarily, you know, and yougotta make sure your ring is safe and
ready to go, you know, absolutely, man one percent on that.
So I want to get out thereagain and playing a trip maybe we'll do
a trip together one day, Chris, you never know want seven eleven.
(55:13):
