  • TikTok Sparks Panic Over a “Cousin Shortage”

  • OpenAI May Be Creating Its Own Social Media Platform

Yes, Apparently There’s a “Cousin Shortage” Now

It sounds like a punchline, but the New York Post says there’s now a “shortage of cousins”—and it’s all over TikTok.

A Millennial mom went viral explaining how kids today just don’t have the same cousin-packed family gatherings that she did growing up. Why? Declining birth rates.

While the math checks out—Millennials are having fewer kids than their parents did—people are losing it online over how different family dynamics look now.
Instead of a dozen chaotic cousins at Thanksgiving, her kids have two or three cousins total. No shortage of viral content, though.

OpenAI Is Reportedly Building a Social Media Platform

Move over Instagram—OpenAI might be coming for your screen time. According to The Verge, OpenAI is in the early development stages of a new social media network based on its image generation tools.

It’s still unclear if it’ll be a standalone app or part of ChatGPT, but the concept seems focused on AI-generated visual content as the centerpiece.

This move comes shortly after Elon Musk offered $97 billion to buy OpenAI—which Sam Altman declined, offering to buy X instead for the same amount. Petty billionaire energy at its finest.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Give us three minutes and we'll give you everything you
need to know for the day with Nina's what's trending.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
There's a new shortage America is facing, and it's when
I didn't think we'd ever talk about. Kind of makes
sense though. There's a shortage of cousins, So there's sad
there is a cousin shortage. Birthrates have been declining and
so now kids don't have as many cousins as they
once did. You remember running around with millions of cousins

(00:24):
on both sides of your family. Now people are having
one kid, maybe two kids, and so the families aren't
as large as they once were.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Your wife.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
Family are you living? It was a kissing cousin, and
then if.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
The kids are all cousins, why.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
It feels real familiar in those.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Just a stick.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
This is so funny to me because my little eight
year old niece got a lot of sass. She'll put
her hands on her hips and she looks me and
she's like, at Nina, when are you gonna get me cousins?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
I'm like, wow, So I'm getting hit by you and
my mother as well.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
I'll just send them this article and let them know.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
It's not just me, So that sucks, and dating pools
are getting smaller.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
I guess, hey, man, it's hard out here and it's expensive,
is what it is.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Also actually family planning, it's expensive and saying not everybody's planning.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Some fancings just happened. But you know what I'm saying, That.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Is so sad though, because my cousin's like my best friend.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
She's my best friend growing up.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
So thinking that like my kids eventually will never have
like cousins like that because of her will probably already older,
it's so sad.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Well, you don't know that they won't because if your
cousin ends up having kids and they got those cousins,
you know what I'm saying, you'll probably have I think, Victoria.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I don't know what you're saying. Your name is Victoria Remirez.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Well, yeah, like coming from me.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Right now, open ai is looking at getting into this
social media game. Oh this makes me a little bit
nervous though, because open ai is looking to do this
and it's coming from the chat GPT's image generation. So
this makes me feel like everything that's on this particular
social media platform will be made. Yeah, doesn't it feel

(02:20):
like that's what it would.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Be called the dead Internet theory. What does that mean
that ninety or maybe it's eighty percent of everything you
see on the Internet was made by not humans? It's
all bost whoa what. It's been a theory now for
about fifteen years or so, But the idea is that
a minority of content will be made by real people.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Well, we want that though. We don't want that.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
I don't want that. Oh okay, it's been a thing
that we've been getting closer and closer to it. As
long as the content's good, yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
I mean you can usually sell it.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
It's not.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Do you ever watch a video and you're like, this
person sounds like they're saying something interesting, and then you
watch their mouth long enough you can.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Tell it's AI.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
If you just glance at it, you don't really notice.
But if you take the time to look at at it,
you can tell when it's AI.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
The real concern here, though, is what we already have
with humans doing it, which is just bad information. Yeah. Yeah,
if you get all your news from TikTok because you're
a dummy, okay, you're gonna be led astray.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
There is art also to creating AI. Art.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Sure.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
I was trying to do something with AI the other
day with a picture. I wanted to make it into something,
and it was.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Not that easy with all the prompts.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
The first one looked okay, and I was like, that's great,
now take that, but then make the text white. And
then it just evolved and then it gave me a
different picture, totally different. But and it just came and
I was like, no, okay, I'm gonna go thumbs up
the one that I like, Okay, okay, great. You know
me and my A talk all the time, thumb use

(03:47):
this the exact same thing that I just put the
thumbs up on, but just change the text color. And
again it did a different one, and finally just inter
me being like I'm gonna do it myself in photoshop.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
With a did you tell chat TBDD like I'm going
to do this myself in photoshop?

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Yeah, I did.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
It did not.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
That's dangerous, very angry.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
So I probably should buy it something on the way
home to sorry about yesterday.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Here's a snack. That's what's trending
