Speaker 1 (00:11):
Oh man, it sure is cold out there, isn't it.
James James James, huh, oh, you must have got lost
in the storm. Well you know what that means. It's
another solo episode for On the Go with Jacob and James.
I'm your host, Jacob Dan Tone. Let's get to it.

(00:44):
Hello everybody, and I hope you're having a wonderful day.
I am having a I'm having a pretty okay day. Actually,
I think my roadcaster is not connecting connecting to my
laptop very well. So I had to like struggle with
that like ten fifteen, twenty minutes before I could even
record the day. But you know, it is what it is.
The show must go on. And unfortunately James wasn't able

(01:07):
to make it. He seems to have gotten snowed in somewhere.
I imagine he's building a snowman, singing a song. You know,
you know things that James normally does, right, you know, James,
James James does that kind of thing. I have decided
to try to record another little solo episode, probably a
little bit more put together than the last time. Probably not, honestly,

(01:29):
if I'm being honest with myself, I'm wiging this I'm
wigging this real hard. I was thinking about what I
could talk about and since I don't really I still
don't really follow any any new TV series or shows
as much, you know. I mean, obviously I watch movies,
and James and I talked about movies and we talk
about like I think I talked about Creature Commandos last

(01:51):
week or something like that. So I do follow new things,
but I'm not not a hardcore devour of media as
I used to be. And with that said, I've kind
of gone back to the well, so to speak. And
I've started watching The Connors. And I don't know if
you know what The Connors is, but it's a spin
off show from Roseanne. And if you don't know what

(02:14):
Roseanne is, it's probably because Roseanne herself has been canceled
for many a year. At this point, she says something
racist on the Internet, as celebrities sometimes do, and she
lost her job. She's she's not on the show anymore.
Was named after her. I think she up started. It
originally aired in like nineteen eighty eight, the original Roseanne show.

(02:35):
And you know the show. It's a sitcom, right, I
used to watch it at nick and Night. It's not
anything special or crazy. It's just like this dysfunctional middle
class family just trying to make it and no matter
what kind of differences they have, they seem to come
together and you know, be a family. And you had
wholesome you had wholesome lessons there, and they were just

(02:58):
kind of like off the cuff. They weren't like full house,
they weren't you know, herkle. They were a very different
breed of sitckcom family. But I always kind of enjoyed
watching Roseanne when I was a child for whatever reason,
and I've kind of found myself going back to it.
I don't I don't know why. It was like over
the Christmas holidays, I was just like, you know what, man,
I want to watch I want I First of all,

(03:20):
I want to see the new season of Roseanne, because
this she had one season. They all came back, like
John Goodman, Sarah Gilbert and all the other actors actually
came back for the series. And so I wanted to
see the first new season of Roseanne to see how
different it was or where it picked up off of

(03:41):
the like where's the family at and all this stuff.
And I gotta say, like that first season, you know,
people talk about, Oh, they're putting politics and all these things,
and they're they're doing this and doing they're doing that.
Roseanne did the same thing. They did it kind of
opposite because Roseanne's family or Roseanne herself and the show
was more of our right wing, you know, matriarch of

(04:02):
the family, and I mean Roseanne in real life is
also very right wing. In fact, if you follow what's
been going on lately, she's very maga. But we're not
here to talk pologics. I'm here to talk about Roseanne.
So right off the bat, it's very political. You know,
Roseanne voted for Trump. It's hinted at Roseanne voted for Trump,
and her sister Jackie voted for Hillary, and they're kind
of like at odds and they're kind of squabbling about it,

(04:23):
and they don't say they voted for Trump for Hillary,
but it's very heavily implied. That's what's going on. And
it's funny because after Roseanne got canceled and you know,
kicked off the show, that kind of went away, the
political undertones went away. And Sarah Gilbert is Darlene if
you're familiar with the show, and she's grown up and

(04:45):
she's got kids of her own now, and there was
an episode where her son's kind of like androgynists, you know,
he likes to wear skirts. And it's you know, very again,
very modern day, right, it's a modern day problem for boomers.
Roseanne gets kicked off the show, decide to keep it
going with the Connors, right. John Goodman plays Dan Dan Connor,

(05:06):
and he's now the patriarch of the family, and it's
it's the same shtick, like they're dysfunctional, but they come
together and there's so many like there's so many heartwarming
lessons to it. There is just like the underlying thing
of like, hey, we're family, and you know, we all
love each other even though we don't understand each other,
and and we still at the end of the day,
we still eat dinner with each other. And it's it's

(05:26):
such a I don't know, it's weird, it's not. It's
not a feel good show, but it's a very realistic show.
I feel like for most families, right because you know,
you watch Full House or you watch any other sitcom
TV family and they seem to be a little too perfect.
You know, they might have issues or whatever, but there's
there's something like not realistic about them and the the Connors,

(05:49):
and to you know, a greater extent, the original Roseanne show.
It feels very like, oh, that could be a real
life family somewhere, and that appealed to me. And it's
interesting because I think Shameless to show Shameless also appeal
to me that same way. Shameless is a horrible, horrible show.
It's like a train wreck. It's like three train wrecks

(06:09):
on fire, and it can't look away no matter how
hard you try. Awful things happen to that show, but
for some reason it's entertaining and it's again, it's kind
of the same thing, like the whole family is messed up,
but for whatever reason, they come together at the end
of the day and they still have dinner. And I
don't know, something about that is appealing to me. I
don't know what it is. I don't know if that

(06:31):
says something about my childhood or the way I grew up.
You're not my therapist, so it's not your job to
tell me if I'm right or wrong. Where it's not
your job to tell me what I'm feeling here. But yeah,
so that's that's kind of what I've been been watching lately.
I don't, you know, it's weird. You know, James and
I we talked about comic books, We talk about pulp culture,

(06:52):
and Roseanne's just kind of a nice break from that,
and I think that I think that's also why I'm
drawn to it. It's just, you know, it's not like, oh,
this version of Roseanne is not as good as this
other version of Roseanne, or like why are they rebooting
Roseanne for the hundredth time, or why are they you know,
why are they doing this sitcom cinematic universe with Roseanne

(07:15):
and Erkele and all these things, Like that's not happening.
You know what I mean is it's very just cutting dry.
It's very such a simple reason to enjoy this television series.
And it feels good. It just feels refreshing. And sometimes,
you know, we get we get so wrapped up in
what's going on in pop culture, and like we're following
Fantastic Four and we're following Superman, and we're talking about

(07:37):
James Gunn and how he's rebooting the Superman franchise, and
we're talking about how, like, oh, Fantastic four, that's really
gonna that's really gonna do it. Otherwise, Marvel's gonna fail.
Marvel's not gonna fail. Like Marvel is gonna put out
a movie, and if not enough people go see it,
they're gonna put out another movie. They they make millions
every movie. Marvel's not going anywhere, no matter how much
you want it to, is not going anywhere, you know

(07:59):
what I mean, Roseanne, The Connors is going somewhere. The
Connors is ending. It's been going seven seasons since it began.
So it's a sitcom. You never know when the end
of your time, end of your days is, you know
what I mean. Like, you could have one season come
out and you're canceled. You could have half a season
come out and you're canceled. It's very very seam of

(08:20):
the pants on the fly. We're winging it. We're trying
to get as far as we can and however, however
long we go, great, awesome. I'm excited about that, and
maybe that's why I enjoy it. I don't know, but
that's just kind of what I've been watching lately. You know, Hey,
if you have a favorite sitcom, or if you have
a sitcom family that you like to think of or

(08:41):
that you like to go back to sometimes even no matter,
even if the lead actress is kind of problematic, but
you know, hey, they got rid of her, so the show.
You know, you don't have to feel bad about watching
the show, you know. Just email us at on the

Let us know what's like sitcoms that you like to
watch and you like to enjoy. You know, what's a
what's a guilty pleasure or what's something you grew up
watching and you haven't seen it in forever, but maybe
you're gonna go back to it one day and it's

(09:22):
gonna feel like nostalgic in a way, you know. Again again,
I know James and I talk about nostalgia, but this
is a different kind of nostalgia. This is a a
nostalgia bait. This is cut and dry, straight nostalgia. Why
do you always wait to the last minute to tell
me these things? I've got a lot too. You know,
It's not like I don't have nothing to do. I'm sorry,
what do you want me to do? Throw myself off

(09:42):
a bridge? Yeah, and take your brother and sister with
a you go. We're in the shower.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
With Jacob and James.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
I'm going to move on here to the Manga Minutes,
everyone's favorite segment featuring me talking about manga. And by
a favorite segment, I mean I think we've only had
the This is like the third time I've had it
on the show, and this is only the second time
I've done it by myself. So for the Manga Minute today,
I'm going to be talking about the Poetry of Ran,
written by Yuske Osawak, and it's fairly new. It came

(10:26):
out in twenty eighteen. It's a short series, two volumes.
I think it's about ten chapters in total, so not
very long. And I appreciate that it was a Christmas gift.
Joel got it for me. Joel and the Monkey got
up for me. And you know, I told them I
like short manga. I want something if I'm going to
read a physical book like a manga series, I want

(10:49):
something short and sweet that will fit on my bookshelf
without me having to collect fifteen different volumes of because
let's face it, that's a lot of books, and I
don't like a lot of stuff. I really don't. I
want to try to declutter my life as much as possible,
but as we all know, it's hard to do that.
So he bought me this poetry of Rand story. And

(11:09):
the story is quite simple. I will read the synopsis
for you to Ru is a young bard looking to
make a name for herself when she encounters the monster
hunter Ran at a sleepy village. Ran is a child
of impurity capable of slaying monster is called karma, taking
their evil indto himself so it doesn't pollute the world.
Ran is feared and shunned, but always puts his own

(11:31):
life on the line to do good. So Toru decides
to write a poem about him. And that's pretty much
the series. You know, I mean, it's interesting because it's
a it's your typical anime manga series. You know, you
got the badass hero. He's a chosen something or other
or in this case, child of impurity, so every time

(11:51):
he kills a monster, it kind of kills him.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
It's nothing. It's something really new to the genre. But
it's interesting because it's it's pretty much from the point
of view of one of the side characters, right, So,
like I towd the bar, she would be one of
the girls on the adventure. She'd be like a side character,
like the second second lead or something like that, and
it's quite interesting to have it from her point of view.

(12:15):
And I think that's why the series is so short,
because if this was a main series and Ran was
your protagonist, it would be much longer. You'd have stretched
out arcs, you would have adventures or like you know,
there's a part in the series where they're going to
this mountain where they need to get their like brands
weapon upgrade it, and this is the mound that all

(12:38):
the child children of Impurity go to to get their weapons.
And I feel like in a traditional mango or anime series,
they would stretch that out over a few chapters. They
would be like a like a couple of monsters they
would probably run into and fight, or there would be
like some sort of antagonists they would run into, and
they do run into an antagonist, but it's not it's

(13:00):
not done in the same way, right, kind of I
kind of think the story would have benefited by being longer,
because again, it's only two books, and it's very it's good,
it goes by very quick. The first book you're basically
meeting all your supporting cast, and then the second book
is like, all right, well, now we're off to go
get the weapon, kill a big bad, and kill the

(13:21):
big bad. And it goes by very quick. And while
I do like a short series, I kind of think
it should have been longer. I would have preferred like
maybe a five like a five book series on this
because while while it isn't about Ran so much, it's

(13:41):
about Torue writing this poem about Ran, right, she's trying
to she's trying to realize herself as a Bard, and
she's trying to get like inspiration, and she wants to
prove herself that she is a Bard because she comes
from like a family of Bards and it's an inheritance thing.
I would have liked to have seen like more singular
chapters of just random and adventures and then like her
writing songs about those random adventures, and she does write

(14:04):
a song. The end result of this is she writes
the song and it's it's it's this great poem and
it gets spread across the land, and you know, she
gets she gets everything she wants. And if that's a
spoiler for you, I'm sorry, but you kind of had
to know it was going this way. And you know,
if I were to rate it out of ten, i'd
give it like a solid seven. I kinda I kind

(14:27):
of would have preferred more action, and I probably actually
would have. I would have preferred more adventure and this
as well, because it happens, everything goes by so fast.
You know, even though this was like two volumes, I
still found myself having a hard time, I guess, getting
myself to read it, if that makes sense. Not that
it's a bad story, it's just I knew it was

(14:47):
gonna be over soon, so I'm trying to stretch out
like my my enjoying of this book. But also I
would have preferred more time with these characters that actually
like develop feelings for them and and wanting wanting to
see them succeed in this adventure that they're on. That's

(15:08):
just me. So hey, if you want to check out
Poetry of Ran again, it's called the Poetry of Ran.
You can find it out like Barnes and Noble or
any kind of bookstore that sells mango. I'm sure. And
again it's by Uskswell twenty eighteen. Fairly fairly recent story.
But hey, if you like manga, go pick it up.
It's uh, it's pretty good. And that's that's all I

(15:40):
got for you guys today. You know, it's it's a
short and sweet episode. I don't I don't want to
take too much of your time. I'm not used to
doing a show by myself at all. You know, Hopefully,
hopefully James won't be snowed in next week. That snowstorms crazy, right,
Like we're in the South, what do we what are
we doing? Like floor does got snow, Louisiana's got snow,

(16:03):
Houston's under snow. You know what, San Antonio didn't have
a lot of snow. We we had snow overnight and
then it all melted away the next day, clear skies,
pretty day, nice and cool outside. Actually it wasn't too bad,
you know, I feel, I feel, I feel a little
bad for James over there being snowed. Yeah, Lee, you know,

(16:25):
what are you gonna do? Weather? Weather's weird, but hey,
climate changes are real, right, it's just just a figment
of our imagination, and it's it's it's you know, it's
just the natural order of things, I suppose, But we're
not gonna get into that. If you enjoyed this episode,
you know, leave a like subscribe to all the things
you need to do to keep us in your life. Uh,
tune in next week when when James is back. We're

(16:46):
gonna be discussing the usual, the news of what's been
going on in our lives. We're gonna hear James's side
of the story. How how he was during the snowstorms.
How you know, did he build a snowman? If he
did build a snowman, how big of a snowma. I
don't know why I'm so obsessed with snowmen, but a
lot of people in Houston were building snowmen, so maybe
he did. Maybe he did a snow angel. We'll find out.

(17:08):
So if you're interested, email us on the Go Pod
twenty twenty three at gmail dot com. Ask us whatever
you want to ask and we'll include it on the episode.
We know what. We have a dear listener, Zach, who
asks us things about every week and we always try
to get to him. But hey, without further ado, I'm
on the go. James is not on the go because
he's not here. We are all on the go.
