Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ray already for close season atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning, coach, Good morning, Good to see you man. Yeah,
it's great to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Good to see the shoulder moving around.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good over there. Yeah, and didn't take me long to
get tired of the sling.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Are leaving four seasons, federal crediting you and.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Good morning, our good morning, morning morning.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
We were wondering where you were at to Jeff. We
thought this was your day, so good morning. I didn't
remind you, but I'm glad you came in so good
If you all right, coach, Jeff, I know you got
some good stuff up. You had a tough meat last
week coach with LSU, although you had a good score.
They scored well too, didn't.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, but the last two home meets are against the
last two defending national champions. Yeah, just get a rest,
go ahead.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Had a road trip to Alabama there too.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah. So we're looking at that score as being your
top score.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Cant that's the top counting score. Yeah, you're a high
score you have to throw out. Yeah, so it was good.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah. Do you think you perform at the level of
your competition?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
And yeah, I think I think it's I think if
there's that focus you know to go out and you
know you have to be at your best. I think
that challenges great athletes. So you know, that's the benefit
of the SEC is every meet, every every matchup is premiere.
But it was senior night. It's a little something special

(01:17):
with you know, it being the last night in the
arena for eight of our athletes and you're bringing the
defending national champion in and and nobody's hiding from the
fact that they know you need a score. Our team
knows we need a score because we're in a dogfight
for that for the last two spots in the in
the SEC Championship meet. So you know, just great, great

(01:40):
response from a young team. And we challenged him a
lot during the week, but they stepped up to everything
we challenged him with. And you know, honestly, I think
we prove to ourselves that we have to be really good.
But when when we are really good, we can compete
with anybody in the country. And you need that when
you lose a couple of all rounders during the season,
you need that confidence with the new lineup.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
You feel like you in the SEC when you're going
into the SEC tournament, like this coach or meet you're
pretty much facing the best teams in the country in
your conference. Yeah, I know there's some good teams, you know.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Well in the top right now, the SEC owns half
more than half of the top sixteen teams, So you know,
the whole rest of the country is fielding eight teams
that can compete with the SEC, right, and the SEC
hasn't missed on one, you know that. I think that's

(02:35):
the difference. Yes, you're you're you're competing against the I
mean we talked about this off air, but Arkansas did
not make the SEC championship and they beat number two
and number three in the country this year. Wow, there's
no other conference that's the that's the conference champion in
every other conference, you know, So it.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Is tough here and they and there's only two wins.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah in the conference conference wins were yeah. Yeah, it's
just you pay a price if you're not consistently on
your game in this conference. But you know this, our
young team just really happy with the fact that they're
they're able to put some of this adversity behind them

(03:18):
and continue to push and have proven I think we've
all proven to ourselves that we can compete with anybody
and if you can do that, a young team that
believes is a pretty dangerous team. So we got one
more opportunity. This is still both this this is postseason,
but it's also the last regular season score that you
can use. So the SEC meet is important. It does

(03:41):
affect your postseason seeding.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
You going that you're looking at you're looking at your
hashes are not not one?

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Yes, that's the highest accountable one accountable. Yeah, we got
to beat that. I mean, that's gonna be tough. That's
gonna be tough. What we we got to do is
get in the one ninety sevens. If we beat we
we could jump all the way to eighth in the country.
If we beat that one ninety seven five, if we
beat last Friday's score, and if we don't improve at all,

(04:14):
if we go have a bad meat, we could drop
all the way to fourteenth. So and those seating positions
matter right now, those those things are important.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
So ideally to score a one not better than the
seven seventy five, because you could count the seven seven
five after that or fall in between then and then yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Really anything above a one ninety seven one or something
like that. If we can do that, we're going to
be ecstatic because we'll probably move up in the rankings.
Right now, we're twelve, so we're the lowest three seed
in the country, so you want to stay a three seed.
So we'd love to be ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth is fine,
Thirteenth is fine because number twelve and number thirteen go
against each other. You just have a different rotation. So

(04:56):
so really, yeah, I won't know what's a good rotation
and I won't know what's a good regional till afterwards
because you never know who's going to have a good
meet and who isn't. But but you do want your
best opportunity. You want to you want to try to
have the highest seat.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
If you don't mean we're talking to coach Jeff Graviy're
on the market. Is thirty one minutes past the hour.
Art Leman's with us as well for as Credit Union coach.
What's a score you're thinking you got to have in
this thing? If you may have mentioned.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
That, well, it's hard with there's sixteen judges on the
floor now, so it's hard to know how that's gonna
you know, we normally we have four judges on the floor,
So what happens is these four judges that are on
each event. You throw out the high and the low,
and you average the middle to so it really gets
rid of the variable where you might get one judge

(05:41):
who missed something and got really low, or one judge
who missed something got really high. R you miss that
gift or that that robbery, you know, so it's more
accurate judging. I just don't know what's in my mind.
We are probably an average one ninety seven three to
one ninety seven four somewhere around their team. If on

(06:03):
an average night, we should be in there. So I
would really I'd love to have a one ninety seven
three or four at me and that would jump you
in the ranking that that would really jump us. I'd
probably put us in ninth.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
Okay, yeah, two thirty Saturday BJCC, it's all stars.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
What a When are we going? When we leaving for Birmingham?

Speaker 2 (06:25):
We leave this afternoon. Okay, we gave. We gave most
of there. As you can imagine, we had a lot
of injuries, so all the people that are rest on
our team have not had any rest, so you know,
we're pretty beat up and tired at this point. So
we gave them yesterday and today off the people who
are competing on Saturday. There are some reserves left that

(06:47):
we're trying to dial up to speed. We'll practice them
right before we get on the bus, and then it's
podium training tomorrow morning, which means you do get to
get on the equipment for twenty minutes on each event.
You know, get used to all the live and the
bounce of the podium because it's an elevated stage. And
then you know, Saturday at two thirty, So Saturday at

(07:08):
noon we start warm ups and Saturday at two thirty
is the teams.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Get done in twenty minutes. Coach, can you run through
everyone that's going to do the vault and everything and
try to go through there.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
We have to practice what you can get done. You
try to squeeze as much as you can into twenty
minutes on all those Yeah, yeah you can. You can
get done more on floor and in vault than you
can on bars and beam.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Because other teams in there are y'all rotating through.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
All four afternoon sessions. We'll all be in the afternoon session.
Will all be in there to the need to watch.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
The other teams. No, okay, I didn't know if they.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Know that sometimes we've done that just this meet, not
so much the next meet, the regional meat. We might
need to know what the other teams are scoring near
the end because you're playing that game to try to
beat them, do you.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
Well, I guess you'd have to look at the routine,
the level of difficulty, the possibility of a really high score,
and say, man, if they throw this, we gotta be
to throw.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Yeah, so you got to watch what they do because
we at the same it's the same with us. We
have some options where we can throw higher difficulty and
maybe get a better score, but higher difficulties higher risk,
so they might just because they throw it doesn't mean
it's going to look as good as there.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
You know, you can get a good, really hot a
good score.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
That's right, And that's why you got to be careful.
You don't start chasing your tail. If you start chasing
the score. Man, if you're behind at the end right, well, yes,
And that's why your rotation matters. And and you've got
to know what the game is because that yeah, the
last two or three. If you have good options and
you have to do it, then you want to be
able to have practiced.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Did you say your rotations starting on beaming?

Speaker 2 (08:43):
We start on beam, so we go beam, floor, vault, bars.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Okay, you're okay with that though, right.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, Well I didn't really have a choice. We we
got to choose our rotation. But in the postseason, we're
either going to have the first round, our second round.
We'll get to buy the first round. So the second
round of postseason, we're either going to start on vault
or start on beam. So we selected to start on
beam to practice. What's going to happen at the regional meet?

Speaker 3 (09:09):
What do you think is your best scoring event?

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Beam should be right now, beams are most consistent and
has been one of the highest scoring events. But I
really feel like floor is capable at a high level
of scoring, and you know, vault and bars, it really
comes down to sticks on those landings. If we have
scored really well, when we've stuck a couple of dismounts
on bars, and when we've stuck a couple of vaults.

(09:34):
But right the whole year, floor and beam have been
sort of carrying the water. We get anyone back, Marissa
Neil is almost full speed.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Now. We lost one or two for the season.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
We lost, We lost two all arounders for the season,
and and we've had we've had a lot of injuries
and little injuries and sicknesses. Marissa we lost for five meets,
but to get her back at the month of February
is miserable because we lost three Marissa's and all basically
and all around her for us.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
She's been she's almost one.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
She's only now getting to about one hundred percent. So
we get her back on two events, we just don't
get her back on four.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Which is hopefully to be ready for a regional.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah, yeah, hoping. It just depends on which region we
go to. And you know it's like basketball summer earlier,
summer later.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Okay, Well, I mean that's good luck, coach.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
Yeah, I didn't see anything about.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
It's that sec network at yet two thirty.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
If it's not that, it's plus. Yeah, you feel good, coach.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
You're feeling good about your situation.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
You know, it's exciting when you have a young team
that are our potential is really high. And I'm trying
not to get wrapped up into you know, everybody picked
us to finish dead last in this conference. That everybody preseason,
coaches and the fan poll all picked us to miss
this thing, and we didn't just squeak in. We beat

(11:01):
Alabama into it. So we're seventh. We're the three seed,
not the four seed, so you know, and we lost
two all arounders and everybody picked us to miss it
with full strength. So I really feel like this young
team's overachieved and we got to we got to recognize
that as we're coaching them that you know, they're they're
sort of learning on the job. And to me, that's

(11:23):
fun because the potentials there, we are we are capable
of making it all the way to the final four.
But boy, things got to go right. So it makes
it fun to coach. You know, there's a burden when
you're when you're Bruce right now and you're I see that,
I'm like, gosh, yeah, I was that. I had that
feeling in twenty two. Yeah, that's not that's not pleasant.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
It is it is. That's a good point. There is
a lot of pressure there.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, there's no pressure on us where nobody wants us
to beat him. They all know we're good enough to
beat him, but nobody really wants us to beat him
because you don't want the upstart to knock you down.
So so if We've ruined some nights this year.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
It's been Yeah, it sounds like you've got a good
team ready to relax, ready to go. You feel like
they're ready.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
I think they are. You know, it's we're really young.
So this SEC tournament thing is is going to be
a brand new for some of these sets.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
I mean, you're smiling. Is it that much fun?

Speaker 2 (12:16):
The SEC Championship, this meet, it's the best meat of
the whole year, you know, it's the toughest meat. I've
joked around saying it's harder to win the SEC Championship
than the NCAA Championship, but I believe that's true. We
left out a team that has already been number two

(12:36):
to three too. They don't even have the right to
get in to do this, so it's already the hardest
It's the hardest thing in the country to do, is
to win the SEC Championship. It's the SEC does it right.
They treat their athletes right. They make this thing premiere,
and these young people are going to walk into something.
They think they wanted this when they signed up, but

(12:59):
they just have no idea what it's going to feel
like when you're out there. So I'm excited for them.
It's just a lot of fun. And we've got a
couple of transfer kids who came in and and already
are shocked at the difference between these other conferences and
the SEC. So it's just just fun to coach.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Coach.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Yeah, well, yes.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Well you don't have to worry about whether you're indoors. Yeah,
but it's going to be seven anymore, it could be.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
And the ticket sales are going great up there.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
They said they wondered if it was sold out.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I don't know if it's sold out yet. There are
still tickets available, but they were, they were, they were
talking yesterday that the sales have been pretty brisk.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Your brothers, jam is it in Minneapolis? Twenty eight degrees
there right now?

Speaker 2 (13:38):
Oh? Yeah, I know I texted when it's hot here.
I don't text them, but.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
God, that is that is all right? You know you
don't have to go build a fire under the tractor, like.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
No, I don't have to do that, thank goodness.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Yeah you don't.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, I'm gonna, I'm want to stick around for art
for a little bit. Yeah, yeah, good yeah, yeah, yeah,
but that's question.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
Yeah, we're gonna, We're gonna we might have.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
It Yeah, that's coach coach gravery.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
We're gonna take a few seconds, take a break, come back.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
