Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, good morning y'all. Again.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
This is the fourth year I've been here with glen Wood,
so it always this time of year.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
You know, it's.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Football time when you come to media day. So thank
y'all for having us again as always. D Mark Van iHeartRadio.
Can't say enough about what y'all do for our kids,
for our program and for this area with high school football,
and it means a lot to me just what y'all do.
So again, thank y'all so much. Just kind of get
started with glen Wood football again. Always excited to start
(00:30):
a new year. Got a whole new group of seniors,
a whole new group of players, so it's always exciting.
First off, I just want to say to our administration,
thank you so much for everything they do for us,
for our program and give us the resource that we
need to be successful. A little bit about last year,
not gonna talk a whole lot, what a great first
year for us, coming to a new league and everything,
(00:52):
being able to run the table, go down and know
when the region, awesome, awesome accomplishment for our program played
really well, got in the first the playoffs, and I
take full accountability for it.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
It's my fault.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
We blow a ten point lead in the fourth quarter
and we get beat and not something we ever thought
would happen to us. We played really really well for
the nine ball games up to up to that point,
and played really good and that in that game also
for three quarters, and we turned the ball over the
fourth quarter, did some things we.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Didn't do pretty much all year.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
And in football, when you got that kind of recipe,
you're gonna kind of lose ball games.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
So not the ending we wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
We we we expected, you know, to make a deep
playoff run. We thought we had the team to do it. Uh,
the kids put in a lot of work throughout last season.
But you know what a great first season, like I said,
to win the region and to go on to feed
in the regular season. So kudos to that team, and
they kind of just laid a solid foundation for our
program moving to three A and to a new league.
(01:48):
So this year we got a lot of the same
faces back. We did lose seventeen seniors from last year.
This year we got sixteen coming back. So got a
lot of these guys that are up here with me
right now. This this's been with me for four years.
It's played been in our program. For a long time,
so excited about their senior class. Also got a good
junior class coming up with right at, you know, fifteen kids.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
So we got a good.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Foundation from the juniors and seniors coming up. And I'll
introduced these guys right here to my right. We got
offense defensive lineman Aaron Carter, number seventy eight. We got
our center here, number fifty, a Ethan Henderson. Then we
got two kind of veterans over here that's been women
for a long time, Number two receiver Cal Lawrence and
number one, you know, running back linebacker Forrest Carter. Judis
(02:30):
so expecting big things from our guys this year. I think,
you know, for us this summer, we just kind of
been back to work since June and it's just been
a grind.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
It's been very, very hot.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I don't know if it's just me kind of getting
older or if the heat is really just that hot,
but it's been definitely hot for us this year, so
kind of had to adjust some things we did.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
And kind of practiced a little bit early in the mornings.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
So but it's just been all business, all working out
and then we're looking forward to get started August fourth
and hopefully we can come out and do what we
did last year in the regular season and you know,
get back to the playoffs and make a deep playoff run. Hey, coach,
going into last season, you had eyes on you because
you were the newbies in the HSAA.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
But now you have a target on your back going
into this season because you went undefeated in the regular season.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
So how are you going to handle that pressure.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
I don't think, you know, our system and the way
we do things will change it all. We're gonna put
the same amount of work in. We're gonna, you know,
be in the building and do what we got to do.
I think the hardest thing, just being at previous schools
that have been successful, it's kind of easier to get
to the top. It's very very difficult to stay at
the top. So you know, you just got to work,
and I think that's the only thing our kids know
how to do. I don't think we have to change
(03:37):
who we are. I don't think we have to change
our recipe because obviously it was successful obviously with your personnel,
and you know, you're gonna change and tweak some things,
but our systems do not want it won't change, and
we're just gonna come out and try to play gloom
our style of football, and we try to play extremely
fast on offense and try to play aggressive defensively, so
the mentality will be the same.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
We definitely got some very tough ball games to start
the season this year, playing you know, a couple of
classes up with Valley and the Hive.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Let it they're going to be this year.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
So we're just kind of excited to get back, you know,
out there next week and put the pass back on
and it'll be a two and a half three week
grind and then we'll see it up and see where
we're at and get ready for reach of play.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
Yeah, coach speaking to that, like you just said, knew
last year to this league. But having the performance you
guys did last year, a lot of the games were
well in reach of winning that kind of thing. But
to have that kind of performance last year, how much
confidence does that give you in the team entering your
second year in the HSUAA.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
I think that a lot of people on outside may
not had confidence in our guys. I really and I
said this last year, you know, after we beat Valley,
I think everybody in our building knew exactly what we had.
I think they knew that the coaches we had, they
knew the roster we had. So for us, it was
kind of more of just going out proving ourselves. And
you know, we were able to do that and not
only able to beat Valley early, but you know, one
(04:55):
of the biggest games for our program last year was
going down to Elbon and having to stop Alvin Henderson,
that quarterback. And you know, our guys played, they accept
the challenge and we play phenomenal and so that kind
of kickstarted the season in the region play and it
just you know, I got You're right, our guys did
gains some confidence. But I think, you know, I think
in our building last year, I think we knew. I
think the coaching and I think our team knew we
(05:16):
had a chance. We put the piece together have a
really good football team.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
Hey, coach, I've also exposed to athletes from last season,
So what are some of the challenges that go into
trying to replace those guys and maintain that same level
of production from last year until this year.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I just think the biggest thing for us as a
program is always trying to build depth.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
So I mean, you know, you always see the frontline starters.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
But we know in the back of our our mind
when we had three four running backs last year that
we could have went to if we had to the
same way at quarterback and at other positions. So you
try to build a program with depth and that way
when you have turnover the next year, it ain't like
you know, it's it's a whole new team or a
whole new system and things like that. And you know,
the way we practice, We're going to practice a lot
of players. I don't believe in kids standing around, So
(06:01):
you know, we kind of try to build our depth
way we practice.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
And you know, our mentality right now is next man up.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
And we got some good young kids coming up that
you know, they don't have a lot of planning experience.
Y'all know their names right now, but hopefully here in
about a month you'll be saying, well, that's just the
next guy.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Coach Coach Daniel at least got Academy mentioned a definite
speed difference moving from AI SA to A it's just
a double a ball. Was that something you guys dealt
with when you first started playing, or you know, obviously
nine and one a great year.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Yes, I think yes, and no, as a coach, not
really because I spent you know, pretty much my whole
career in that league, so I kind of knew. But
we got some guys in our building. They can run too.
We got some athletes. We got a lot of multiple
sport athletes. Y'all saw our baseball team this year, how
well they did, and our basketball team also, So you.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Know, I think speed to speed.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yes, when you start talking about the seven A the
big Dogs, Yeah, that that's kind of that lead speed
the six A's. But you know, with us, yeah, we
faced some fast guys. Like I said, Alvin Henderson is
one of the fast guys we've facing the state. So
but you know, we were able to sit there and
like I said, we got some guys that can run
and able to kind of boggle him up a little bit.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Hey, Ryan, that first game with Valley last year, it
was I know, it was a crazy one. So I
guess is it a good opener for you guys? You know,
because that's all through fall camp, that first game, it's
kind of circled. Are you looking forward to that game
and what do you remember from last year? And and
is it a motivating factor expecting maybe another close one
this year.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
I can tell you this, when we kicked the ball
off last year and they took it about ninety eight
yards so open to kickoff, I didn't think I didn't
think it was the right game, So no, but it
was a good, clean rivalry. I got a lot of
respect for their program. They got a lot of great athletes.
Coach Hunter does a phenomenal job over there, and I'm
expecting them to be really good.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
But it's a good measurement stick for us.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
So I'm not one of these coaches really that's gonna
shy away from playing anybody really so, and that's kind
of the way we preach things that aren't building every
single day. So it is a challenge for us because
our roster's probably doubled in us. But I think you
saw last year when everything kind of calmed down and
we weathered the storm and we got to just playing football.
Meanway through the second quarter, the game changed, so and
(08:07):
I think we were able to wear them down a
little bit in the second half last year, but you know, look,
the ball fell all the way at times, so you know,
you take them how you can get them. But it
definitely will be a big challenge for us to go
on the road and play it in the first ball game.
But it's one that we've been talking about this summer
and our kids know and we're just we're trying to
go get it back here in the back. Well, coach
(08:28):
Dunbarbi coming back and helping with the program this year,
say that one more time. Oh yeah, see, you'd definitely
be back with us. And so I know he's he's
taking a new role at the church were at right now.
So we love coach don bar He's done a phenomenal
job for us last year and we expected him to
come back and at least service some kind of role
for us this year for sure.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
Good question, though, Coach, let's have the players come up,
introduce yourself and talk to us about how the off
season has been after one year in a hs AA
and how motivated you are because of going undefeated in
(09:09):
regular season and not doing well in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
My name is Ethan Henderson.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
Playoffs getting cut short last year that it was a
big blow to our confidence. I think starting out at
nine to zero, we expected to just go up there
and we walked in the game with a little bit
of we're real calm, going in no sense vergency. I
think that's what killed us in the end. It's this
off season we're definitely pushing. We're we're working real hard
(09:39):
and to make sure that we follow through throughout the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
And hopefully win state.
Speaker 8 (09:44):
You can definitely see a change of attitude coming in
weight room first week. It was great see everybody moving
around wanting to be there. I think that's a that's
a big shift from last summer.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
We walked in it was kind of old.
Speaker 9 (09:57):
But, uh, can you repeat the question again?
Speaker 1 (10:04):
I look you forgot. I'm sorry.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
First of all, your name, Oh, my name is Aaron Carter.
Speaker 9 (10:08):
I'll play old line.
Speaker 7 (10:10):
How does a loss in the playoffs after an undefeated
season motivate you? And how have you worked harder this year?
Speaker 10 (10:17):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (10:18):
That loss and motivate motivates all of us, cause we
all take football series here in Glenwood. But stuff in
the past we really can't control anymore. We can control
what happens this season now. So it's really when we
get around playoff time, we're all focused around what we
have in our room and stuff like that.
Speaker 10 (10:40):
Uh my name is Cayl Lawrence. Uh, play wide receiver
that lost last year? You know they were a good
team and you know we're we went ten and oh so,
I mean it hurt our confidence. You know, we thought
we were gonna go all the way. But you know,
you can't do nothing about it now.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
And we're we.
Speaker 10 (11:01):
Fuck in the building. We forgot about it. You know,
we're still working hard. We're working hard every day and
you know, I think we're gonna we're gonna go all
the way this year. Uh card Judah running back, and
I think it really motivates us to do better than
(11:21):
we did last year. And just that's all we can do,
is just do better than how we did last year
and fix all the mistakes so we did from last year.
