Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey guys, Hey, thank you guys for having.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Us here, inviting us down from Roanoke. And you know, we.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Really appreciate the Orthopittick Center, John as our athletic trainer.
It comes and works with us and he does a
lot for us, and we thank you guys what you
do for high school football.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
You know they told you my name is Chris White.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
I'm taking over for coach Larry Strain, pretty much a
legend in high school football in Alabama, and I'll be
a little promotion for you. I think it's a guy
when we need to get into Hall of Fame. He's
a hall of fame high school football coach. Big shoes
the field, but excited to fill the shoes. I've been
with coach trained for six years at Roanoke, and before
that we were together up at White Plains.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
With me today, I got.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
A Cole Davis plays offensive line force. Kavian Allen, we'll
call him k Man, that's his nickname, plays running back force.
And Ridge Nelson who'll play defensive line some tied end
force this upcoming year.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I went seven four.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Last year we had lost a huge group of seniors.
Matter of fact, we'd graduated twenty two seniors the year
before us.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
All these guys got playing time.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Last year, finished two in the region and then we
got put out of the playoffs first round.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
We had to make a trip.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
I mean, so we was three in the region, had
to make a trip down to Saint Michael's, down to
Fair Hope and got put out with it to a
very good football team. We've got a lot of returners
coming back. We've got seventeen coming back that saw a
lot of action and so we're looking very forward to
the season. We didn't do spring balls, so we've already
had two practices under our belt this week. Matter of fact,
(01:31):
we have practiced this morning and got in the vehicles
and headed down this way from media day, and so
you know, we're really excited for the season. We changed
up a little bit offensively, and I think it's a
good change for us. What we're gonna do. And the
one thing we hadn't changed is handley. We are known
to be physical, run oriented, and that's what we are
gonna do. And defensively, we're gonna be a team that's
(01:52):
gonna run to the football and you know, and put
our face on g that's what we want to do
or at the old school ways that I was taught.
We're gonna put them on you and that's what our
guys are all about. And we've had a lot of
excitement so far as we've gotten as the change it's
tookn place in January, hit that weight room very hard.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
We incorporated a little bit more of a nutrition program.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
We do a lot of protein that we do before school,
after workouts, and we eat a lot with our meal plan.
And we've got some guys that have gained a lot
of weight. Matter of fact, we've got a couple of
guys has gained better than thirty pounds since January.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
And it's some nice muscle on our guys.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
And you know, we have a really good workout facility
and our guys work extremely hard to be very successful
in For a football.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Coach, I know you're no stranger to handle. You've been
around for a while and I know you you also
head coach and other.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Sport right, Yes, sir, I was the head coach of softball,
been the defensive coordinator for the last six years.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Talk about are you still going to continue to coach
softball as well?
Speaker 1 (02:52):
No, sir, last year, this was my last year of it,
so because I can dedicate more time. This past spring
was pretty challenging in the head softball coach and also
doing football workouts at the same time. It's pretty challenging
because you know, softballs are a good, big deal at
Hanley too, and I know.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Watching Hanley football just from from Afar, it seems like
the community really comes out in sports. It every year.
Everybody the Friday nights or an event talk about just
Hanley in general and the town coming out.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
And we have a great community.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
I mean a quarterback club meetings already that they're taking place.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
There's a lot of excitement.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
We got a you know, got a fundraiser coming up
in a couple of weeks. It's been it's already taken off.
People are excited about that.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
We'll do them. Meet the Tigers on August eighth.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
We'll do a scrimmage there at the stadium and we'll
have a big crowd out of the community who'll come
out and just watch us in our in our first
scrimmage under the lights. But you can guarantee on a
Friday night in Road not town's gonna shut down and
it's gonna be crowded, and they gonna get behind the
Hanley Tigers. There's no doubt about it. And you know
football is very big in Ron Oak. They there's very
(03:57):
high expectations not only from us a coach, staff, from
its players, b O community expect a good product building field.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Coach, you you start off with a pretty huge challenge.
You stuff up in class and play one of the
best teams in the state every year in five A.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
How do you approach that game? All?
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Right, Well, they're no stranger to us by any means.
I mean, when you play Class Central, we know what
we're getting. We're gonna get hard nosed, physical football, and
they're very close to us in proximity.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know, it's it's it's a good rival game.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
You know, it used to be a Week ten game
and now we've moved it to Week zero. But it's
really a good really it's a great starter game for
us because we know we want to be a physical
football team and it kind of sets the tone of
how we want to be for the season. So as
our mentality is going in that, we know usually your
(04:50):
training camp is gonna be very physical, and so that's
really good for us that we can have all this
physicality and training camp and go into that football game.
So we know we're gonna get two in wishbond run
right at you. And that's good for us because that
sets a tone because you find out real quickly if
your players want to.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Be physical, if they don't want to be physical, you're.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Gonna find out that people want to play football, the
guys that want to stand on the sideline. So the
mentality is, you know, actually, starting tomorrow we get to
put shells on. We're gonna get to finally pop somebody
a little bit. We'll start working toward that football game.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Let's have the players come up. All right, guys, if
you'll give your name a couple of questions. It's interesting
what AHSA does in allowing you to either play a
spring game or start early.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Which do you prefer?
Speaker 4 (05:42):
And what has a playoff loss last year motivated you
to do?
Speaker 2 (05:48):
And what are your goals for this year?
Speaker 5 (05:50):
Cole Davis olon, I think being able to start earlier
as a team helps us because we get to this
practice a lot we get we just start practice earlier
to build a bond with the team and just go
a lot harder and just get a little bit extra time.
Uh and that the loss last season in the first
round of the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
I think it really lit a fire under all of
our guys.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
We've been working real hard in the weight room this
off season, and I think we're we're ready for this
upcoming season and I think we're gonna be I think
I think we're gonna do good things this year.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Okay all us.
Speaker 6 (06:28):
Mkay Van Allen. I played running back. Uh, the loss,
we thought we can go further than we went, but
we knew it ain't gonna be no easy game. We
knew it wasn't gonna be no easy game, but we
did expect to go further. But for this season, we've
been going harder than harder than we went last year,
and we're trying to go further than we went last year.
So I think we expected to go further.
Speaker 7 (06:57):
My name is rich Nelson. I play defensive line. I
think that that loss last year really gave us a
spark to be able to go far. I don't think
we need to look back at something that that could
hold us back really and I think that this year,
if we were to play them, I think we could
lay smack down.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Coach real quick. You talked about you know you've already
started fall practices now underway. What did you do during
the summer? Did you do a lot of seven on
sevens as you do any OTAs or anything like that
during the summer.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
So we took a little different approach, you know, we
wanted to work on our mindset.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Only we worked on us.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
All we did was was a lot of weight room,
We did a lot of install So basically, to be
real honest, we going into these last two days, we've
been in full blong mold of football. I mean, the
only thing we really did not do this summer with
some special teams, that's what we've done the last two days.
So we basically just worked on our mindset, I be
real honest. We we hadn't talked about the skin you
(08:00):
who we're gonna play, and we're not gonna do a
lot of that, And that's no disrespect to the people
we're gonna play, but we want to We just want
to get our mind right, uh who we who we are,
and that's what we've been kind of working on all right.
Speaker 8 (08:12):
Coach, going back to when you were talking about how
y'all changed offensively, how have y'all changed offensively for us?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
You're gonna you're gonna see us a little more uh
old style. We're gonna be an under center team, not
one hundred percent of the time, uh, but we have
we have a lot of guys. We have a lot
of tight end type bodies. We have some big fullback
type bodies. So you're gonna see us kind of get
under center, and I think it's gonna help our quarterback
play a little bit more.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Not saying we're not gonna be in the gun.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
We do have several different gun packages, but we're we
we got a lot of guys who can top the ball.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
We got a lot of guys who can block. Uh.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
For example, would be k Man and the two or
three others. The other day, we did attend one football camp,
Universe said North Alabama. We went as a team and
we had we had several guys that turned four forwards
on the laser. So you know, we want to be
we want to work on handing the football off and
let's hit it and get downhill very quickly.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Well, coach, we certainly appreciate you making the trip down
here today. Best the lucky as you continue with fall camp,
and thanks so much for being here.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Thank you sir
