Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thank you, Ann.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm extremely, extremely proud to be here today. It always
lets you know the football seasons right around the corner.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Uh. There's two things.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
That go on around here to let you know football's
almost here. One of them is the great American Treasure
has been found. So I mean, do you hear that
every day on the radio and of course in the
media days. It lets you know that football is right
around the corner, and which is uh, which is our life.
We're extremely excited about being here. And I'm telling you,
the older I get, the faster these years go by.

(00:33):
When I was in high school, a day in high
school and football practice seemed like a last month. Now, man,
you turn around and the season's over, it's time to
start again. It seems like we just got off the
field last year with Real Town. Seemed like that was
last week. But it's been over a year. So extremely
excited about being here. I want to think. I think

(00:53):
the Fox Sports News, iHeart Radio, the Orth Beeedy Clinic,
which I'm sponsored by today if you'll can see this
on the foot up here, they take good care of
you if you got any injuries or Peter Clinton the
place to go.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
H D.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Mark Mitchell and Jeff Sasser.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Thank y'all for what y'all do every morning on the
radio for high school sports and other sports topics. Van Riggs,
thank you for what you do in high school sports.
I don't know where you are out there, but thank you.
Jerry and Eddie Friday night football after games, man, we
appreciate what y'all do. People love to hear talk football
and talk about the kids, and uh, we appreciate everything
y'all do. All the TV stations, all the newspapers, a

(01:30):
news all you guys. Uh, you're about to get busy again,
and we appreciate everything y'all do for us. Again, you
take care of our kids. You right about our kids.
They love to see them name of the newspaper and
love to hear the name on the radio. So thank
all of you for what you do and taking care
of high school sports and everybody in the area.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
We're coming off our.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
First year in HSAA from the AI s A. We
went five and five h you know, to us, that's
average to the least. Got we don't do average very well.
So these kids went back to work in the summer,
in the spring in the weight room, on the field,
trying to prepare for another season of tough football. We

(02:09):
don't have off weeks in AHSA. We play three a ball,
whether it's one, A, two, eight, three A seven A,
you do not have an off week. Everybody you play
on Friday night can beat you if you don't play well,
and we had five last year that we didn't play
very well in so we've got to improve on that.
That's our goal again is to get the playoffs. Matter

(02:29):
of fact, I talk to kids this morning. We had
our one ten test run test this morning, and the
last thing I told them was to get in the
playoffs and then see what happens. But you got to
play well each and every week. The only off week
we got is week five and we play open. Other
than that, it's a tough week every week on Friday nights.
You got to start preparing each and every day. And
they understand that now after going through a year of

(02:51):
it and seeing what we play.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
They're ready.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
And of course they're still getting ready, but what they
got to understand and people understand that this might not
be good English, but we're out athleted every week. We
have to do things the right way. We have to
do run Chris browse. We have to do everything little
things make a difference in our league, and they understand that.
And I was a little lax last year on the

(03:15):
little things, you know, Uh, but I told them it's
gonna be harder on this year. We've got to do
little things right and if we do that, we can
be successful.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
But that's all on us. So we got to take
care of our own business.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I want to I want to talk about a coaching
staff real quick, because as a head coach, you're only
as good as your staff. And in my case, that
makes me pretty good because I have a great bunch
of men that take care of our kids.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
They they they.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Love the Lord and uh they work out, get kids
out and they work hard and uh you know they're
they're they're special men to me. But start with is
our offensive coordinator, coach Rick Wade.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Coach Wade I think is starting his forty first or
second year and coaching football.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Uh D c is Jacob Osmond.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Uh. I pulled coach Osmond out of the classroom when
I first got to Lei Scott and made him start
coaching football. Now he's a defensive coordinator and does a
great job with our guys. Excuse Uh Clay Safford. Uh,
Clay went to Lei, Scott played there.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
He Uh.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
He coaches our wide receivers and DB's uh coach Dwayne Drayford,
I think coach Drake for starting his thirty eighth year
of coaching.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
He's our d line coach, our our life coach, whatever
else you need. He is a great man and kids
love him to death. And we got a couple of
young guys are starting with this year. This year Dawson Locklear,
which actually played at a c A and Montgomery, which
is our first game this year. He is helping with linebackers.
He's also a fireman in Auburn. Great young man. He's

(04:42):
gonna he's gonna do a lot for us. And then
we have Trent Mace. Trent works uh at Grid I
think is the workout place he works for.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Uh, he's gonna help us.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
He's gonna coach a little wide receivers and some dbs
gonna do a great job.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Fine young man.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Our junior varsity staff is William Johnson head coach, Jared Cook,
Weston Vaughn, and Sean Price. Shawn's new with us this year.
He helped out with baseball last year. But he's going
to do a fine job for us also and our
pee Wee program. Pee Wee's head up headed up by Robert.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Eazel, the head coach. Been there. I don't know how
long he's been as long as I have.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
And uh, you know, he keeps telling me he's winning
his coach in pee Wee history, and tell you that
real quick. He know his brother in law sitting right
out here. I see him laughing. And then Al Henry
and Brent middle is going to help him. So having
having a program in pee Wee's, we're fortunate to have
that on our campus.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
So where they start learning our.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Offensive defense, and then when they go to middle school,
they already know the basics. They they're talked more day
and when they get to us, they already they shouldn't
know everything because they run the same offense, we run,
same defense. We run not as detailed, but they line
up in the same formation.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So proud to have that group with us.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Our middle school does a great job, and uh you
know that's that builds on our success and helps us
in the future on the varsity.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Uh introduced the players.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
To my media left over here on the far end
is Max Shiver On fifty one. Max plays offensive tackle,
defensive tackle, and he likes to eat, as you can
tell beside them. Number fifty four is Davis MCCASAC. Davis
also plays offensive line and defensive line, a little bit
of center.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Uh to my right over here, Max Hammer.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Number twelve is our quarterback, big arm, big kid runs
the ball well, so you're gonna see a lot at
him this year. And then on the far end is
Easton Gregory. Number two is a wide receiver and dB.
These guys are four of nine seniors we have. Last
year we had eighteen seniors. We graduated eighteen seniors is

(06:34):
a lot in a five A school much less than
that three A school with small numbers, so a lot
of guys are replaced. These guys are doing a great
job with the leadership.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
They are.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
They're leading in the weight room, they're leading verbally, they're
doing it all so they're they're picking up with the
guys left off last year. Expecting big things out of
these guys this year. Our schedule this year, the only
change is the opening game on all twenty second. Coach
Phillips at XL and myself talking on the phone back.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
In the spring.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
We both just agreed, you know, he wanted to play
somebody a little closer, and we really didn't want to
drive three and a half hours, so we just, you know,
agreed to end that game we could find somebody else play.
He found somebody, so we got ACA out of Montgomery,
which also gives us another home game.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
So that was big for us to get.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Five home games and five road games, so we'll be
playing ACA. Other than that, it's the same tough schedule
we had last year. We're looking forward to it. There's
a lot of really good football teams on our schedule
and just looking forward to the season and ready to
get started.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
We'll open up now for questions.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
Hey, coach Jereb berverro for the High School Scoreboard show.
When you and glenn Wood went into the public school sector,
and I was a little hesitant. I didn't know how
y'all could compete with the public school. But after the
first four weeks you and glen we were combined eight
to o. Glenwood never lost a regular season game. You

(08:11):
guys lost five out of your last six games, but
two of them were state champions. You lose to Wadleigue
twenty nine to twenty eight, where they won the state
championship game thirty seven to seven. And then you lose
a real town in a real competitive game twenty six
to nine, and they blew out their opponent in the

(08:32):
state championship game forty nine to thirteen. So my opinion
of you guys are the guys that came into the
public school has completely changed. You guys are real competitive
and I expect big things out of he can. I
ask Max? What's your middle name? Max?

Speaker 1 (08:52):
You need to be like Charles. You could be mc hammer,
but that's pretty good.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
You got a big offensive line from what I've seen.
Those two kids, are you among us?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (09:03):
They try to be golfers, but they're I know they're
better defensive, I mean offensive lineman. But uh. I talked
to coach Eazel, the greatest coach ever at at least God.
He said that you lost a lot of key players. Uh,
could you give me some numbers how many players you
got coming back? And and uh, what is your strong

(09:23):
point on your team? What? What are you most concerned
about about your team going to the first game.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah, like I said, we had eighteen seniors last year,
which is hard to replace on a big school.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
We got.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
We got nine guys coming back as senior. We have
ten seniors. One head surgery, so we can't play right now,
so we have nine that are actually playing. Uh, we
have nine returning starters.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Now.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
When I say that, I'm talking both sides of ball.
So that's really not a whole lot we have. We
had a lot of guys replaced those eighteen guys that
left last year. All of them I think played a
key role. The majority of them were starters. So it's
hard to replace that number of guys as that leave
in the small school. But you know, we're gonna be
We're gonna be strong offensively again. I think we've got uh,

(10:06):
we got max Is coming in, you know, as a starter,
full time starter. And it throws the ball really well.
So I mean not saying we're gonna throw it every time,
but that that frees up a lot of.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
Things that helps you run game. If we're able to
throw the ball a little bit more concern. Maybe it's
just youth.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
You know, we've got forty one total players, that's nine
through twelve, and there'll be some you know, we get
one of our guys hurt. Knock on wood, I hope
we don't. There'll be maybe a ninth grader out there playing.
It's starting for us, you know, not saying they're not
can't do the job, but you know, as a ninth
grader playing against the competition we play against, that's that's
that's tough on them.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
But you know that.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
I guess the probably the youth is the thing I'm
concerned about more.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
Coach Tyler Edmond wrbl if you could just speak about
the challenges you guys face when you entered the public
school sector last year and maybe some of the biggest
differences from the AI.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
S A now to the AHS double A.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, y'all mentioned it a while ago that you know,
we we face better athletes every week.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
I mean, we just do. It's just being honest.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
We have good athletes, but it's just a it's a
different kind of athlete that we're not used to seeing.
Now after a year, we used to seeing it, and
we know what it takes. We know what to expect
and so we know how to adjust.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
But the biggest thing is just the speed of the game.
I think that that kind of shocked my guys. It
may not be the right word. Last year was the
speed of the game that they're facing. So I think
that's the biggest adjustment and biggest hurdle we have is
just doing things where we need to do it, doing
things the right way, and just competing every week.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Hey, coach, in.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Terms of points allowed, you had some of the lowest
numbers in the region.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
So what are your thoughts on this year's defense? The same?

Speaker 2 (11:37):
I mean, it's not the same guys, but we're gonna
run the same kind of defense. I mean, maye throwing
a couple of twitches here and there, but we're gonna compete.
We're gonna get after it.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Again.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
We're facing really good football teams each and every week.
We don't have the same caliber guys last year. You know,
we we were senior heavy. We're not that way this year.
So we gotta expect a lot of young guys step
up and and just you know, make the same place.
You know, they they played a lot. Those guys that
are are starting this year, they played a lot last year.
They weren't starter, So that's a different role for.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Coach.

Speaker 6 (12:12):
Can we thank you, coach? Can we hear from the
players now if each one ive you'll step up and uh,
you've had one year.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Of a hs A A.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
What are your expectations and how has your off season
been because of those expectations, give us your name.

Speaker 7 (12:30):
My name is Max Hammer. We uh last year going
five and five. Uh, we don't really like to do
stuff like that. At least got we kind of the
seniors kind of took over. We are now we just
do everything.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (12:48):
We work on really emptying the tank every sack, every
single practice, getting to the point where if the fourth
quarter comes in, it's the tight ball game. We're not
just gonna start getting hurt stuff like that. We're gonna
we're gonna play through it. We've really come together. We've
had a lot of a lot of the young guys
buy in and try to try to achieve the same

(13:09):
kind of goals. And we have a lot of guys
who are who are young that are gonna step up
and play big key roles.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (13:17):
That's that's in the locker room and that's.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
On the field as well.

Speaker 7 (13:20):
So I'm excited about that.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
My name's Easton Gregory. Even though we lost a lot
of people last year, I still think we're gonna be
a really good team. We've all worked our tails off
this summer got better, got stronger, got faster. I just
want to see a big result from that.

Speaker 3 (13:43):
My name's Davis MCSAAC and I kind of agree with
what they said just after last year. We don't like
to do things like that, at least got We prefer
to win. So our goal this year has been to
make the playoffs and make a deeper on the playoffs,
and that's shown in the offseason. I feel like everybody
on the team has worked much harder than last year.
Everybody's bought in pushing them from the same side, and
everybody's working hard and we're excited.

Speaker 8 (14:06):
My name is Max Shiver, offensive line, defensive line, and
kind of echo what Davis and coach said. We've been
working hard this offseason and it's gone by really quick.
We've been working hard in the weight room and out
in the field, trying to perfect what we already know,
and for the younger kids, just for them to really
learn the place. And mostly we're just excited. We're ready
to play.
