Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now it is time to go to the Hamilton's hotline
for Ben Thomas Hamilton's and two locations to serve you,
Magnolia and Overtree, two fine places to dine. Every Monday
we go to this Daphney Spanish for therea to bring
in our good friend, the Guru, Ben got game Thomas.
Good morning with ail dot com.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning Ben, Hey, gentlemen, how are y'all doing good?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
How are we doing? How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
We're doing good? And we uh got through another week
and uh sunny down here on the coast and uh yeah,
getting getting ready for another week. There you go, there
we go.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Well, it is a beautiful day here in the neighborhood,
so we glad to have that. Your family doing.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, doing well. We uh you know, celebrated what would
have been our granddaughter's first birthday. Yes, ah, Ben, that
was kind of a hard day. But we know where
she is, uh and she's in the arms of Jesus
and we'll we'll see her again soon. Wish she was
here with us, but that's okay, Well, we'll see her

(00:59):
again soon. But yeah, everything everything's good.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
All right, well, good good, all right. Where you want
to start being We got High Schoogle Lore and we
had some games Friday night, a bunch where you want
to go.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Uh, well, I don't know, I guess just off the
top of my head. Hoover lost again again. Yeah, anytime
they lose too straight, especially in region plays, a pretty
big deal. You're Trustful four and oh Josh Forde team's
looking good. Uh there, you got to stay along with
Thompson Central Phoenix City right now, they're one of the
top contenders. Probably it's not the top contenders for the

(01:33):
seven eighth Staate title. So ye, Hoovers, you know that
that lost last week to Hillcrest really hurt Hoover because
I'm not sure Hillcrest is is great, but I think
Hoover invested. I mean, I think you at Ves, Davia,
and Thompson are all really good. So they're gonna be
uh it's gonna be in a must win situation for
them coming pretty soon here, it's not already.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
I know, I've noticed that. I thought that Tuslas County
loss was kind of shocking, myf not that you know,
things don't happen, but yeah, that was a shocker. I
wondered about that. And then Hugh at Trustwell obviously is
very good, as you said, and we know Thompson is
good and Central's good, so it does appear that those
three are the front runners.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
I thought the Central game was interesting. I mean we
talked last week. I think we talked about it. Dosan
ran up six hundred yards and ten touchdowns against the Enterprise,
who I thought was a pretty good team, and so
I thought they might come in there and give Central
a pretty good game. But that was not the case.
Central jumped on them early and just ran away from them.
So that tells me a lot more about Central. I

(02:37):
knew they were good, but uh, you know they've been
They moved up to number one when Thompson lost that
great game the Grace in Georgia. Uh so that's that
tells me they are once again a legit contending to
get to the championship game and maybe win it. Although
we know the playoff situation is going to be different
this year in seven eight, so there'll be some hurdles
maybe before they get there. But Patrick Nixon has got

(02:59):
an a good squad.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
He does he really does it. Wash. I was like you,
I saw where you know, I've seen Enterprise play. They've
got a young team, but I did expect more from
from uh Dothan playing Central Central. I didn't think they'd
win that game then, but I didn't think it'd be
like it was. You know, I tell you another team
in that group, and I don't know how good they
are because their schedule, But Carver's playing good football too.

(03:22):
I think they're unbeaten.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, they I think the hardest part of their schedule
comes into second half. Yeah, it does. They they haven't
played any of those we just mentioned yet. You know,
when they get when they get around Phoenix City and
Auburn and Opelaca, we forgot, you know, And then I
hadn't mentioned opake Iman there.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
No, I forgot about that.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, over there, Brian Moore continues to do a good
job there. So yeah, that region too, I mean it's
the same story. Region two in y'all's area and then
Region three in the Birmingham area look to be the contenders.
Although you know, if you look down here, you got
Mary G. Montgomery in seven eight that's still undefeated. There's
clearly the class of the Region one down here, and

(04:06):
then up north you have Bob Jones sitting and undefeated.
And we know that this year the way the seven
eight playoffs, this system's gonna work. The teams from Mobile
are going to play the teams from Huntsville in the
first round, and the teams from your area going to
play the team from Birmingham. So that means you're gonna
have some some big time quarterfinal, semifinal type matchups in

(04:27):
the first round of the Class seven eight playoffs, which
I'm sure those coaches in your area in Birmingham aren't
too fine. It's gonna be It's gonna be fun for
the rest of us to watch.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
No, it'll be fun. It'll be very interesting, there's no
doubt about it. Ben Thomas with us with Al dot
com talking high school sports. You are right, it will
be very very interesting. Jackson. They're really good, aren't they being.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
They are, you know, and they got Jackson's schedule. They
got three of the biggest games in the state at home,
I know, and they got to be Cody Fournoid's got
to be loving that Gate money that he's going to
get it there. I don't know. I don't know what
the crowd was like this week. And they beat Baker,
who's I think a very good seven eight team. They
are right behind Mary gim down here, uh in that

(05:11):
seven eighth Region one, but they got a good quarterback
Take Graham, and a good running back, Eric Scotts Uh.
In his first season as the head coach there. He
replaced Wan Clemens who left and I'm sorry Wan Johnson.
They left and went to James Clemens and they they
were undefeated coming in there, and Jackson took care of him.
So think about Jackson's schedule. They opened at home with

(05:32):
Sarah Land lost that game. Obviously we know e J. Crowell,
a great running back, didn't play that game. They didn't
get Baker at home, and then in a couple of
weeks they getting undefeated and number two ranked Saint Michael's
team was Gunna Rivers coming in there. So I mean,
I can't imagine anybody has a more high profile home
schedule than Cody Fournoy in his game. But I think

(05:55):
there's some good teams in four A. Man, I'm not
ready to give him the title yet, And and part
of that has to do with if you just don't know.
And Coach Borno himself has told me this. They got
all those stars on that team, at least five of
them already committed to power five powerful what do we
call it now? Power forward.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Is what I say.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Oh yeah, so big time SEC A SEC programs. And
you never know how those what those guys are gonna think.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
You know.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
So Crowell's come back with a vengeance since the suspension.
I mean, I think he ran for one hundred and
seventy nine the other day against against Baker, which is
very very good, very fast Baker defense. But you never know,
you know, if they're gonna, you know, what what they're
gonna do when when it in a really tight game,
if they're gonna just keep playing, or if they're going

(06:43):
to be ready to go on to college. Now that
all indications are they're really competitive if they won. You
know a lot of those same guys run one two
straight basketball titles. They won the football title last year,
So it'll be fun to see st what Saint Michael
can do when they go up there in the next
couple of weeks. I mean, they're gonna have to outscore them.
I mean that sounds stupid, because of course you're gonna

(07:04):
have to outscore them. It's gonna win the game. But
I mean it's gonna have to be a high scoring
game for them to win because they're not gonna be
able to stop Jackson offensively. I don't think so, uh,
that's gonna be That's gonna be a game. I think
all eyes in the state are watching. And then you
got you know, West Morgan team up North in four A.
So there were some good teams, but clearly, clearly Jackson.

(07:25):
We knew that going in there. You know, they lost
to AirLand. It's still remain number one in the Class
four A poll. And I would have I might have
had they lost the Baker, I might have still voted
number one in the Class four It might have been
a little tougher, but they they look like they're rearing
into form here.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
What about skipping to one A where we had a
forfeit team said they couldn't play widely because they were
too physical and didn't have enough. It's that interesting? Did
you see that? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
It is. I wrote a story about that.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Did my bad?

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Just Yeah, you need to be on al dot com.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Well, I am, but I can't get them all, Ben,
I'm sorry. I try to get every one of your articles.
I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
No, I'm just kidding you, man. Yeah, So, yeah, I
talked to Bill Smith as the coach at Donahoe. He's
been around the state for a long time, coach a
lot of different places, and obviously Dake Rivers is the
coach at Widely. I talked to Bill and he was
just like they had he said, they have so Donahoe
is a really small school, even smaller than the school
my son goes to Visual Christian. He said they had

(08:31):
a roster of twenty five I think seven through twelve,
and he just said, look, two of them are two
of my two way players are out with concussions. I
got another guy who's got mino. So he was basically
down to I guess of almost about twenty players and
a couple of them eighth the ninth graders, and he

(08:52):
just didn't feel like, you know, Widely he said was
probably the most physical team in one A. And I
don't know if that's solely based on the quest Will
who looks like a giant out there running to get
those guys, you know, the big six five Auburn commits.
But he was worried that he said he was worried
anyway about you know, being some some serious injuries, and
so they did forfeit. I thought. Dave Rivers talked to him.

(09:15):
He was very nice about it. He said, look, it
is what it is. We understand. We just continue to
work on ourselves and try and get a little bit better.
Uh this week. So I hate it. You know, we
got and we kind of got used to that stuff
during the COVID. I know you guys remember so during COVID.
Obviously they they allowed teams to forfeit without PILM because

(09:37):
because of COVID, but we had, you know, kind of
an underlying controversy was a lot of people thought you
were forfeiting games against good teams and kind of making
up the fact that you had COVID just because you
didn't want to go in there and get get get injured.
That was kind of a controversy in those days. I
don't know, I hate that. Did he even get to play?
I kind of understand it because, like I said, my

(09:58):
son goes to a school that's in the similar numbers,
uh predicament then than Donna. Then Uh okay, I forgot
Donahoe Yeah, Donahoehoe Yeah, Donahoe is so. But the other
thing is, you know, according to a h s A rules,
if you forfeit a required game, which a region game

(10:18):
is required game, you may be not may not be
eligible for a championship and maybe and maybe in the
next classification.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
I didn't know that.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah, now there's some gray area there because we had
the incident with White Planes a year or two ago
under mister Briggs and that that they ended up allowing
them to qualify. I don't that year or the next year.
I don't know when, but so we'll see if that.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Was on now.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Look, Donahoe's going four right now. The chance of them
get the playoffs this year, we're not. We're not very
good anyway. But you know, if they if they were
to rule them not eligible for the next two years,
that would be that would probably not be worth forfiting
in one game.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
I will say that, No, it would not be. I
just I hate it for the kids, for both teams,
certainly hate it for widely, you know, not getting to play.
So I don't know, it's just a tough situation all
the way around, you know, it is.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
It's a hard situation. Yeah, I said, I feel for
both teams because I know what it's like to have
limited numbers. We have a lot of schools right now
with limited numbers that are just trying to play. You know,
our base shore team plays Saint Luke's this week, and
you know, we got about thirty players on the varsity team.
I think I think Saint Luke's was so low in

(11:31):
numbers during the summer that they thought about not having
a team, but they were able to get enough out there.
On how many they have now, but that's going to
be should be a pretty even matchup because I think
both teams are, you know, in the twenties probably on
their roster, which is that's hard to do it. It's
hard to put an eighth or ninth grader up against
juniors and seniors. You know, they're just not physically ready
to play. I mean I would be afraid for my son,

(11:53):
who's in eighth grade, to go out there and play
a varsity game against anybody. I mean, he's clearly not
physically mature. There's a few that would be, obviously, but
for the most part, you're an eighth or ninth especially
in eighth grade, you're probably not ready for varsity competition yet.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yeah, it takes a it takes a rare person to
be ready. And we had one winter state championship one
in eighth grade, but there ain't any that can do that,
is it, Ben?

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Yeah, but even you know, even Trent you're talking about
Trent yea at Thompson, but he didn't start until the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
I know, that's what I said. I know, No, I know,
I'm just saying no, no, I get it. I'm just
saying it's special players. I don't mean that.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, now he is rare. I mean, yeah, he's one
who probably could have started in the regular season. Another
quarterback in there who was who had already been the starter.
But yeah, but you're talking about and maybe and quarterback
is special because you got to know everything. But you
talking about like an offensive defensive lineman going up again
up against might who's been in the weight room for

(12:49):
four or five years. That's a that'd be a hard task.
So yeah, wild we'll be back on the field this
year this week, and you know they got I don't
know they play. I think they played through Christians this week,
if I'm not mistaken out of Pail City. But you know,
Maplesville is really good, yep, really good as well, So
we'll see, we'll see how that turns out.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
You know, I can't remember the scored his brush win
this past weekend because I think he did.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Rush did win. Yeah, he did win this week, Okay,
so he should be at officially.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
One two ninety eight victory oadcast Okay, two ninety eight,
so he's got two more.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I think he had two ninety six coming into the season.
Now obviously he'd already passed three hundred one he had
that was taken away Valdosta. So but yeah, he'll I
think I think they won two games this year, right,
and I think.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
That that's what I got him at. Yeah, I can
look it up.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
He should be at two ninety eight. He needs to
get back officially.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
But I hope he does it for him, you know,
me and you, he'll do it. This, he'll do it.
Let me see.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
You know. It'll be in the next two weeks. And
I don't know who they play.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
I'm gonna pull it up right here. Yeah, be uh.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
He'll definitely get it in the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
Yeah, cousa Christian, we're talking to them. Ben Thomas with us,
he works with al dot com. He's on the mark
every Monday, all right. So they've won two in a row.
They got Susan Moore and Blunt, so the Blood will
beat tough but Susan Moore they ought to handle.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
I don't know how to Blunt will be I mean
Blunt obviously there's six a program.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
Uh there're two and one, I mean one and two
good point, yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Yeah, but they beat Murphy, and Murphy's really down. Okay, okay,
I mean I think Murphy scored maybe ten points all year.
That's Sherman Williams. You know, it's taking over Murphy and
they're just I don't know what it's gonna take to
get that team up. I once a proud team, a
store team in the state of Alabama. I don't know
what it's gonna take to be able to get them back,

(14:46):
you know where. They're just not an embarrassment. I mean
it's just been bad so far, so they could they
might be the favorite cause Blunt's got to go up there,
so I mean they might be. They're probably the favorite
to beat Blunt so he can win the next two weeks.
What do you think about this discussion? Uh, de Mark?
What should Rush be in the Alabama High School Hall
of Fame?

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (15:08):
You think so?

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Yes, And if I was on the committee, I'd vote
for him with you. You were on there, You're still
on there. I was on there, I'd vote for him.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
I don't know. If I'm on there, well you were.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
I'm just saying we both were on there. How about
that you you were on there was only three years.
You were on there three years, So I haven't.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
I haven't heard anything about it this year. Usually we
voted goush Right do we vote?

Speaker 1 (15:28):
And I think it's late late late fall because Meryld's
going to the football game. Yeah, it's late fall because
I was going that game.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Yeah, I don't know it's gonna be. That's controversial, and
I think Rush really wants to get in. I think,
certainly on the surface of him being a football coach,
he's one of the best ways had. I just wonder if,
you know, like the Pete Rose argument, I just wonder
if if the stuff surrounding surrounding him will keep him out.
And I don't. We haven't as far as I know.
And when you were on the he was never never nominated.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
While I was on there, I never saw a Rush
post name come up. I always wondered why someone has
not nominated him.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Yeah, I think it's just, you know, obviously he's a
polarizing figure. You can't you can't. Nobody can say he's
not a great football coach. Certainly, certainly evident. But you know,
it's just a matter of if all the other things,
you know, because there's what are how many members are
on that twelve to fourteen fourteen? Yeah, remember yeah, fourteen,

(16:25):
So you got to have eight or nine votes usually
to make it in. So it just depends on if
he was nominated and then you know who, you know,
how many votes he could get in that committee. But
it certainly I think it's an interesting discussion moving forward.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Yeah, and just to let everybody know, in Alabama, rush
Post is one seventy nine and seventy two for seventy
one percent overall. Well in other states he's one nineteen
and forty seven seventy one percent overall to ninety eight
one nineteen for seventy one point five percent. He's gonna
win seventy one percent of his game no matter where
he's at. That's that's as.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Yeah, that's his What do you win five five titles
at Hoover? I think, I mean, turn turn that program
into five five a dominant, you know, the state's preeminent power.
And you know, heck he went he went twelve and
one at al Ma Broyant. I know it has not
been very good at every you know, that's they've only

(17:17):
made a few of the playoffs a few other times,
and that was you know, their their first year. He
had Brandon Johnson, you know, in the backfield they've got
so yeah, you know, I just interesting discussion.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
I just thought, well, do you think he deserves I mean,
we're talking. I never heard anybody bring up morals in
those meetings, but I mean, I'm just talking. Do you
think he deserves to be in the Autumm High School
Athletic Association's Hall of Fame?

Speaker 2 (17:45):
I mean, on the on the surfaces of football coach?
I think he certainly does, you know, I don't. I think,
like you know, when we vote on the All state team,
we we certainly consider, you know, especially if if a
coach recommend its. Like sometimes the coach won't recommend the
guy because he's not a good guy, you know, so
so we don't vote on him, and we don't tell

(18:06):
people that. We just it's just obvious. We have a
we have a we had the five eight back of
the Year last year is currently indicted on a murder
charge who he forgot about that. I don't know that
he's I don't think he's playing anywhere this year, even
though he hadn't been officially you approved getting innocent until
proven guilty, certainly, but you know, had he played, let's

(18:28):
say he played this year and had another big year,
would he would he be voted on the All state team?
Be a tough folk. You know who's been indicted in
the murder? Now? He You know, we're talking about the names.
I don't know why I'm not saying the name that's
out there camping.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
I wasn't has been all over the news, but go ahead.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Who played at Russell Well last year? And he you know,
the the charges are that he didn't actually kill anybody.
That that the so he and another guy allegedly went
to rob somebody and the person that they were robbing
got wind of this and shot the other guy that
Cam was with, and that the young man died. And

(19:09):
so what the what the DA is saying is that
the young man was there Becauseisi he idolized Besi, and
Fisi talked him into this robbery and the other guy
was just acting in self defense. So that's why Cameron
Fonsi is charged with murder in that situation, and it

(19:29):
just last week he was denied a youth of.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
An adult.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
So anyway, that situation is out there. I hate it
for the kid because well certainly I hate it for
the young man that passed away. But you know, CAMPANESI
was one of the best players in the state last year,
and he just whatever bad decisions or clearly bad decisions
or whatever happened in that situation. But I bring that
up to say he would not be on the if

(19:56):
he ran for two thousand yards this year somewhere, I
don't think he'd be there on the office eighteen because
I just think, you know, there's something about you, got it.
I think you gotta take some of that stuff into consideration. Yeah,
obviously that's an extreme taste. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
You know, if you're talking about you know, somebody who
at a high school who was suspended for a bad
grade or you know, something like that, you still you
would still consider that, but obviously wouldn't be to that extreme.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Okay, good deal, Well, Ben, we got to go, buddy.
