Speaker 1 (00:00):
Derek Lee and the house as well. It was time
to go to the Hamilton's hotline, as we do every Monday.
Hamilton's has two locations to serve you on Magnolia and Ogletree.
Ben got game Thomas Rice for al dot com. He
is our sports authority when it comes to high school
and he is live from the Spanish Fort Daphney area.
Good morning, mister Ben.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Good morning guys. Yeah, it's good to be home for
a couple of days anyway, after a long three or
four days in Birmingham. But hope you guys are doing well.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
We are. Thank you, Ben, Thank you for your concerns
about our pastor and well nice comments on that. I
certainly appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, I hated to hear that. Obviously, I didn't know.
I may have met Pastor Myers on DA but you
did it. Didn't know him real well, but that was
that was a shock. That kind of put a damper
on Jason Calwell came in and told the group of
us when we were eating during the Super seven about it,
I guess on Friday, and that was that was a shock,

(00:58):
even though I didn't know him real well. Yeah, yeah,
it's a sad sad time for us left here. But
you know, just like I said with my father, he
wouldn't want to come back now if he could.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I know, I know.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
In the arms of Jesus where we all want to
be someday. And I hate it for those that those
of us that are left that I have to kind
of pick up the pieces and live without him. But hopefully,
hopefully we'll see him again.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Dear Mark, Amen, his wife Tracy, and sons Marshall, George
and JJ and Jonathan. So there you go, a good
job being. He was a lot of people Super seven
knew andim he entertained a lot of schools when they
came through here, including Thompson. Mark Freeman wrote a nice
tribute to him. So it's good to see the amount
of people that he touched across the state reach out
and you as well, being So anyway, thank you for that.

(01:44):
Jason is a member of our church and the board
of member of the trustees. And so I mean, deacon,
excuse me, Deacon, so's he knew Mars as well as
I did. So there you go. All right, Ben talk
about Super seven, my friend, what was your thoughts?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Well, it wasn't as competitive as I was hoping it
would be. Honestly, I thought when you when you look
at the teams involved, in the fact that they were
all ranked, there was really no Cinderella teams. I mean,
Opelaka may have been the biggest Cinderella, they were number
ten in the final pole, but all the other teams
were ranked basically in the top five in their final pole.

(02:22):
So I thought we were in for a very competitive
two for seven. We always have a you know, one
that gets away or two, but I mean we really
only had one extremely competitive game. That was the Cousa
Christian victory over one given Coach Props to eighth state title.
That was a good game down to the end. Cousa
scored late to win twenty nine to twenty two and

(02:45):
give Coach Props another title. But the rest of them
weren't very close. I think the average margin of victory
was like twenty five points or something like that, and
that was a little bit disappointed.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Yeah, I agree with you. There wouldn't I guess Mars Hill,
I mean not Mars Hill, but shoot, Cousa Christian was
the closest game, wouldn't it.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, that's what That's what I just meanted.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Yeah, you go there, you go.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, I mean that was of course, there's several several
storylines around that. I mean I talked to coach Broke
after the game, and uh, well he's a treat he
don't change, never change coach. I mean, he's uh, he
is a treat. He He said De Mark that he's
going to coach somewhere he liked to coach for the
next six to seven years, whether it's the COOSA or

(03:31):
somewhere else. And uh he said De Mark. I loved
his quote. He said, I'm open for both. So Rush
will be somewhere. You know, that's an interesting decision for CUSA.
You know they rushed ironically, Rush got the coach because
Mark O'Bryant was suspended so they could be in the playoffs.

(03:52):
But he's only he was only suspended for a year
so he could come back, I assume. And so CUSA
I think has a decision to make there, whether they
want coach to come back or whether they want to
keep coach props, or maybe Coach Brokes has other offers
that he's listening to. I'm not sure, but that's a
good point, interrupting. Unfortunately, you know, they had an injury

(04:13):
late in the game. Their best player, Kylon Johnson, got
hurt late in the game.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Quarterback, wasn't it No, he was does.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
About everything for him. He's a running back, wide receiver,
but he's not their quarterback. Back long as their quarterback,
but he tied the game for him at twenty two
twenty two with a touchdown and a two point pass.
And then he was playing cornerback and he just I
was watching to play and the pass they threw pass
to the receiver on his side, and it went over

(04:42):
the receiver's head and there was no contact at all,
and he just pulled up and it looked like a
stip injury or something, and he just took his helmet
off and just stood there and they came up and
helped him off the field. He still won the MVP
and it was really needs to see. Some of the
teammates carried basically to the MVP stand and helped him,

(05:02):
get him a trophy and carry him back. Hopefully that'll be. Yeah,
he's only a sophomore, so hopefully he'll be he'll recover
and have a full recovery. But other than that, that
was the most competitive game by far.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, it was and it started out with seven eight
was not a good one. They kind of took care
of of OPEC and marsh Hill took care of business. Gosh,
there was a lot of taking care of businesses, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
There was? You know, marsh Hill came. It was competitive
into the fourth quarter. I mean it was seventeen fourteen
into the fourth quarter, which is more competitive than any
marsh Hill game had been this year against Base Side
Academy based out of Academy had a great yere Barrett
Trotter did a great job with those guys. But it's
just in the end those they had those two running backs,

(05:51):
DeMar Jackson Penn. I think it's going to Troy rush
for two un earned six yards and three touchdowns and
Hudson Higgins coaches Son rushed for one hundred and ninety
five and two touchdowns, and you just they just grounded
on you. They had a pretty good job of holding
them in the in the first half, Like I said,
it was only seventeen to fourteen going into the fourth,
but just couldn't couldn't stop him in the fourth quarter,

(06:14):
and they were able to pull away win that game
thirty eight to twenty one. But but other than the
KUSA game, that was the closest game of the seventh.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
You're right, You're right. What'd you think of that last
seven A game? I mean the six A game, the
last game.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
I was surprised. I thought Sarah Land, I picked fair Land.
I thought fair Land. You know, coach Kelly's been there
now six times. I think he's or seven times. I
think he's won in six in the finals. I thought
they would haven't lost the last two after their state
championship in twenty two. I thought they would find a
way to win that one. But it just too much.

(06:50):
They could not block Clay Chalkwell. That Clay Chawkwell had
eight sacks and they just couldn't block him. And they
had a chance to stay in that game. You know,
Clay got up to a seventeen nothing to lead Saara Land.
To cook Kelly's credit, went they were down inside the
five and at the end of the first half, instead

(07:11):
of kicking a field goal, he opted to go for
the touchdown and they got the touchdown on the final
play to cut it to seventeen to seven. And then
Clay got the ball to start the second half and
they were in a second and thirty two, and I thought,
you know, if they hold him here score at seventeen
to fourteen, we got a game. But they ended up
picking up not only picking up the first down, but
scoring a touchdown to go up twenty four to seven,

(07:34):
and sara Land never got closer than ten the rest
of the way. Just you know, Aaron Fry the quarterback
from Clay was great. I think he had about I
think he totaled five touchdowns running in passing, and just
it was cold mismatch. I mean, Clay was just better.
Sair Land. The quarterback is excellent, Jamison Roberts, He's only

(07:55):
a junior. And the wide receiver that was committed to
Duke for a long time. I'm gonna end up signing
with Auburn. He will be. He will be Auburn fans
will love him. He is not too big, but he's
a great player. And those were the two guys they had.
It really wasn't a typical sair Land team. I wouldn't say,
but it's just the bottom line of this game was

(08:17):
you know, you got to compliment sair Land for being
as consistent as they've been and getting to the championship game,
but this game was more about play. Chapel was just better.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Yeah, they were. Their defense was relentless.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
It was.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Jeff Kelly Cayan's a cool points was his situation while
you know what I mean, yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Yeah, he had told me that their offensive line was
you know they he was just they had a lot
of inexperience, a lot of guys that have played a
lot of small guys, and they'd found a way to
kind of win despite that. But you go up against
the front seven like play presented, just like they did
against Parker last year. I mean, he couldn't buy those
kind of these and they had some monsters up there,

(08:58):
and that was that was the difference in the game.
And I just couldn't get any anything going.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
I was trying to think Moody looked good, and I'm
hearing's maybe a change at the guard at Moody and uh,
Pale City you hearing that.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
I have heard that. In fact, our buddy who want
to state championship on Wednesday night told me that, and
I thought, well, that doesn't seem to uh, that doesn't
seem to go together, but.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
We'll go ahead, go ahead.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Uh. The the news came out yesterday that coach Gentry
had stepped down in that city, so, uh, that may
be in the works. I tried to call the A D.
Marty Smith, as the A D at pel City, and
he's usually very good about getting back to me, but
he did not get back to me yesterday. So we'll see,
you know. Obviously, Moody is uh, you know, did a

(09:46):
good job winning state championship, but they're they're getting a
lot of negative feedback about you know, pictures that surfaced
on social media following the game into the locker room
with the kids smoking cigars and all that stuff.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
So see, but yeah, who's wayman to do?

Speaker 2 (10:01):
What?

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Now?

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yeah, you hadn't seen this?

Speaker 1 (10:04):
No what?

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, there's been a bunch of pictures posting on social
media with the players smoking cigars and the players, the
Moody players.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Are you kidding me? In the locker room at Birmingham.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Yeah, in the stadium.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, oh my lord, I did not know that.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Yeah. So there's uh, and you know, in the Moody
football account, I don't know who runs that, tweeted out
something about sorry about the sorry about the locker rooms
in the bill to the City of Moody or something
like that. I mean, it was not great behavior. We'll see.
I actually just emailed the principle to see if he

(10:45):
had any any thoughts on it. But it was not
a good look.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
So no, I didn't know that. Of course that I
don't like that man.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
But yeah, I've heard those thing rumors. We'll see. In fact,
I'm my told me there was gonna be announcement this morning.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
I heard today. That's what I was gonna say. I
heard today.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I don't know. I'd love to know what's going on
there because Nick Gentry did a good job.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
He did, you know he did.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
He replaced he was on Russia's staff when Rush was
there that one year, and then replaced him and they
were seven and four this year beat beat mountain Brook,
which is the Lestone got to the went to the
playoffs both years, lost in the first round. But you know,
they seem to have it going after some tough, tough years.

(11:31):
So I'm not exactly sure i'd be interested to know
what the what the situation is there, But whatever it is,
we know that Nick has stepped down and we'll see
what we'll see if that's he'd comes through.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
But let me just remind you nothing official. Time will tell.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Time will tell time will tell, and we had you know,
I came back as trying to recover a little bit
rested up, and so I got that news. And then
I got the news that Pat Thompson was retiring at
sweet Water, which I've heard before. He did a good
job there, you know, replaced Stacy Luker. He's been there
for twelve years, won two state titles, and he's retiring

(12:09):
and he's gonna look for it. He says, he's gonna
coach again, probably maybe in private schools or in Mississippi.
So he's he They was there twelve years and this
was the only year they missed the playoffs. They went
six and four. But Sweetwater is a you know, traditional one,
a power wonder. There's you know, Drew Luker. Stacy Lucer's

(12:29):
son is his d C. So I wonder if we
may get another.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
One, another Luker as the head coach might do Sweetwater.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
So and then also something else i'd heard but finally
was able to report on yesterday, Blunt is open again.
Blunt and coach Raymond Nelson, according to the principal, agreed
to part ways, so they're looking for another coach and
Blunt is a they falling on a hard time. This
is a team that won five championships in the nineties
and they haven't had a winning season, only made the

(12:58):
playoffs since Lev Holly's last season at twenty twenty. So
they're looking for somebody to come in there and reinvigorate
their program. Obviously, they always have athletes there, so we'll see.
But yeah, there's a I guess it's that time of year.
I mean, we've already had some openings and.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
We're gonna have some more.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
We have even more.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
We'll being Merry Christmas. We'll talk to you next week, buddy.
Thank you so much. Okay, all right, Merry.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
Christmas and prayers up to all my brothers and sisters
in the Opalaka community.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Thank you being you're good man, God bless you all right,
Ben Thomas
