Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Spanish War there.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Good morning, Ben, you want to tell us how y'all
doing today?
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Doing good?
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Ben?
Speaker 1 (00:06):
We did did good weekend? How was your weekend?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
It was busy, It was busy, But I can't complain
too much. I had some stuff going on Saturday and
Sunday that high school wise that I had to report on,
so I didn't get a whole lot of time to
rest up and get ready for week two. But that's okay,
that's what we do.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah, yeah, you had a busy night, by the way,
just to get off you, it was twenty one to
twelve last year.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
At least got big poked on that. Ok, at that score.
We were going over some local games of interest, But yeah,
you were busy. Friday night. We had a couple of big,
busy games.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
We saw it goodiere at Bulldogh Stadium, Benjamin russelling op
like it was a goodie here Friday night, and you
got reported on a lot of goodies in your group.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
But yeah, I mean we had some Yeah, we had
some exciting games. Of course I was keeping track and
trying to keep track of all of them. But down
down here especially, we had two games that were one
on two point conversions on the last play of the game,
both with the same score, ironically twenty nine twenty eight.
So Saint Paul's and Ums and the Battle of Olshell Road,
(01:09):
first first UMS game without Terry Curtis in twenty seven years,
goes into overtime and Ums scores first and kicks the
extra point, and then Saint Paul's gives it to the
big Oregon five star commit Tank Jones, who scores, and
then they said the heck Weather, we're going for two,
and they give it to him again and he gets
(01:30):
in there for the for the victory. So they win
twenty nine to twenty eight. And then crazy game between
Daphne and McGill two and McGill Twolan score with fifty
seconds left to go up twenty eight twenty one. Daphne
comes right back down the field throws the touchdown pass
with eight seconds left, think about a thirty yarder, and
they go for two as well, and they win twenty
(01:51):
nine twenty eight.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I rolled that.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I don't know, yeah, I mean it was good. I
mean it was I don't know why people don't go
everybody doesn't go for two in that situation. Now, still
that the Auburn Alabama overtime game that you know, that
was ten ten going to overtime and Alabama scored first,
then Auburn scored. I still, I still think, why in
the world did they go for two right there instead of,
you know, just I'm a lot better off losing the
(02:16):
game I could going for it then playing four overtimes
and losing. You know, yeah, didn't get it. But good,
some some good games. Obviously, the big you know, one
of the big ones down here and the big ones
across the state was Sarah Lane Jackson. The big news
obviously with EJ. Crowell, the Alabama five star running back commit,
didn't play, suspended for that game and it hurt him.
(02:39):
They turned it over five times, didn't run the ball
very well against the good saara Land team. I was
expecting even without Crowell, a lot more offense than that game.
Saarland ends up winning seventeen to six. There was some
rain and two good teams. But Crowell will supposed to
be back this week against Demopolis, and I think Jackson
will play a lot better. I still voted the number
(02:59):
one and four eight even though they lost that game.
So those were Those are a couple of games that
grabbed my attention.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
All right, how much would it have matter that Jackson
had some turnovers? Didn't they ben five of them?
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I things, M, yeah, that that killed him. I know
they had four fumbles and I think maybe they had
an interception as well, so that that obviously hurt him,
and it was I would have liked to see the
game full strength, with Crowell playing and not not reigning.
I think it would have been a much higher scoring game.
I'm not sure. I'm still I picked their land even
(03:32):
before I knew that Crowell wasn't going to play, So
I'm I'm not sure they wouldn't have won the game,
but certainly, I mean, this guy is uh maybe the
top running back in the nation, and so if he's
not on the field, it's gonna hurt you.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
M big crowd there. You didn't get to go, though,
I know I wondered what it was.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
I didn't get to go. Randy Kennedy went, Yeah, it
was packed. I think they had coached Borden Hoyd had
told me they were tapping the ticket that I think
forty one hundred. I think forty five. They could hold
forty because you know, then once you take the bands
out of it and passes and stuff like that you
get down to forty one hundred. But yeah, it was
a big crowd from both sides of his environment for
(04:12):
high school football.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
It was let's see what else down there was a
biggie I I get so many scores I look at
I'm trying to think.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, I mean those those were probably the biggest ones.
Theodore and Baker was a good game. Theodore trail most
of the game, came back and took the lead with
two minutes left thirty one twenty eight, and then Baker
ran to kick off back for a touchdown. So Baker
Baker beats him again. I think that's at least a
second year in a row. Bakers won that game. The
(04:43):
Hall of Fame coach Steve mask Is I think probably
kicking himself for they've lost a lot of close games
in the couple of years he's been there. So those
those were all the good games. Saint Michael one big
which didn't it didn't surprise me. Gunnar Rivers had five
touchdown passes, so he's also a good start in his
junior season. And I guess you know elsewhere across the state,
(05:06):
like you mentioned, Oplhaika, Benjamin Russell. That was a hard
game to pick for me and turned out to be
a good game. It looked like I saw that D. D.
Morgan had a big game for Benjamin and Russell, so
that's good. And Auburn crushed their opponent from Florida. So
then IMG I'MG took care of Hoover. That was the
other big game that was on a national TV. So
(05:27):
big game this week up in North Alabama though, Hustling
and Columbia. You asked me, why is that a big game?
Speaker 1 (05:32):
But yeah, a.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Ninety two game losing streak, uh, and this may be
their best chance to break that losing street. So we'll
see because Huffman hadn't been very good either, although they
beat him last year, so that'll be be interesting to watch.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
So A and Russia's team lost. I thought they won,
Now they lost.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
They were up seven and nothing, I think, and that
now they're playing a pretty good team. I know, he's
count of Georgia. I think gets pretty good. I think
they lost twenty to seven, twenty one to seven or
something like that. So it was close, and that's another
interesting game. Of course, they host Peale City this week
where Rush was for a year. You know, between KUSA stops,
I guess you would. Yeah, so that so that'll be
(06:16):
that'll be an interesting one for those. Nick Gentry, who's
now the coach of Peale City, was on was Russia
to d C when he was there for that year.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Tell me this any did you hear a bunch of
penalties being called in some games?
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Face mad, I'm not about mouthpieces and knees. Have you
heard any of that?
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I have not, no okay thing about that.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
We had some of.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Those probably trying to probably trying to crack down early
so people know, you know, to watch for it all year.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
I would guess, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I mean I thought that maybe I mentioned what I
that I had to work a little bit Saturday. I
think maybe the best story in the state was the
situation that happened at Silicago. You guys from Yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Talked about it while ago. That's incredible, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Oh my gosh. If you hadn't read my story or
not because I wrote it, but just because of you
know what happened, I'd encourage you to go on ail
dot com and read it. I mean, if you guys
talked about it, there's no use going into it. But
you know, basically, one of the officials had a heart
attack and another official jumped into action and started doing
CPR right away, and from what Coach took Coach Smelly
(07:25):
told me the guy died, the official, Joey shell N
that was his name, died twice on the field, but
they brought him back and he's in stable condition now
from what I understand, or at least last I heard,
and was face to facing still facing bypass surgery. But
the cool thing is just listening to the spectators talk
about the presence of God that was there going on.
(07:48):
Coach Smelly told me that they have a DJ there.
He started playing the Goodness of God at a low tone,
and I heard multiple people kind of told me that
you could almost hear the prayer going across the stadium,
that type of that type of atmosphere. So anyway, I
(08:10):
thought that was a you know, a terrible story that
turned into a great story because the hero is a
heroism of the one of the fellow umpires. I talked
to him on Saturday. Real nice guy, a real humble
guy that I'm not a hero. I just want to
get air back in my buddy, you know. Yeah, so
he acted quick Ben, Oh my gosh, you know. And
(08:32):
the funny thing was guys that he saw. I said,
you know, and I asked coach Smelly, like, soay, y'all
finish the game. It was just happening in like the
second quarter. I don't know how far around in the
second quarter. But he said, yeah, you know, once once
he was, everybody knew that he was, you know, okay,
or at least, you know, had not passed away. They
(08:53):
resumed the game after about a twenty minute delay, and
I asked Lou Murphy as the official, that that saved him,
and I said, did you go back and officiated you
take the night off? He's like, no, I went back
and did it, he said. I. You know, my mind
really wasn't on it, and I was probably throwing penalty
flag that at plays that weren't there, but I was.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Doing my job.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
And I said, what the good news is, surely none
of the coaches could have got after you after a
bad off. You just saved man's life. They can't. I
that's a whole Oh never mind, that's the guy who's
sake somebody's life.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Yeah, well he shouldn't have been throwing flags. He didn't see.
But other than that, I guess it was good. But
you know what I mean. But yeah, that's a that's
a I got chill bump for reading that, you know
what I mean.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
And uh so big big night. Yeah, God that night
to step in and do that. And I'm glad that
the reaction of the crowd. I didn't know that about
the DJ. That's that's pretty.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Cool too, That's what Coachelli told me. Yeah, yeah, that
was a good story. But otherwise I thought it was
a good, you know, good first week. Didn't hear too much,
too much controversy anywhere here obviously. Last week the big
controversy after you, after we talked was the situation at
Jackson with the running back.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Oh yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
I think that probably I think that probably worked out
the best it could. I mean, you know that it
was possible he could have been suspended for much longer,
maybe the whole season. Right, somehow they were agreed agreed
upon one game, which was meaning really meaningless in the
grand schemes when a reason getting so.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Good.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
He's a good HEJ is a good guy, I think
from very humble beginnings, and I think you'll see him
still have a big year still maybe being there in
the race for mister Football.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Yeah, I agree, And I think the way Jackson handled it,
being proactive and being the way they you know, went
after it proted, you know, self reporting and communicating with
HSA all week.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
I think that was a part of it too, and
get it right for the Keys.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Yeah, I did talk to So I talked to hith
Harmon late last week, and uh, he said something that
was interesting. He told me that normally, you know, they
sent the investigators out maybe in October, just to review
things that people had, you know, schools had turned in
self reporter or whatever. And he said, he actually sent
those out last week. So we're trying to get ahead
(11:17):
ahead of it. You know, we don't want anybody to
lose games that you know, could could affect the playoffs
or whatever. So he actually, you know, I had the
investigators go out, and I'm not just talking about Jackson.
I'm talking about any other schools that maybe you know,
wanted to check on the eligibility of a player at
there on school or wherever. And so they went out
last week and we're checking. He told me. He told
(11:38):
me that Kayla Ross both told me it was like
the busiest two weeks they've been a part of just
trying to make sure everything was you know, was straight
with that. So hopefully they'll have a easier week this week.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Well that's good, nothing wrong with that. Be proactive, do
it right, get it right, you know what I'm trying
to say.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
So I like the way things were handled with the
Jackson situation, and you know, I hate.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Any he got suspended. I don't like it.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
It's not but it sounds to me like you and
I both know it could have been a lot worse,
and it sounds wound up being okay.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
You know, yeah, definitely, I definitely think it could have
been worse. Now Jackson felt like he didn't didn't do
anything wrong, played, but you know, you know, I don't
know where the you know, there's two sides of each story, obviously,
that's right, that's right. I think him being ineligible for
one game and then being able to come back and
(12:28):
play this week and the rest of the season, because look,
it would have it would take a monumental upset for
them not being the championship. I agree, I think so.
I mean, he's still got probably fourteen games left there.
You got injury that he can play this year.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
There you go, being anything else you want to go
before we go, Buddy.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Man, I don't know. It's busy week, about to start
start working on this week. But you know, Thompson some
good games this week, Thompson and Grace and Georgia. Yep,
will be a big game down here. I mary g
Montgomery and Golf Shores as one of the bigger games.
And then and then uh Huffman and Columbia, like I
(13:06):
mentioned earlier. You know, can Columbia in that big street.
So well, I gotta I gotta get my mindset and
move from week one to week two.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
There you go. I'm sure I'm.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Still trying to I'm still trying to pull the braves in,
you know, get them to the You know, we were.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Gonna make it without talking about them, but you brought
them up. I wouldn't. Hey they won yesterday, Ben.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
I know. Hey we beat the Mets eight to five
in the season series.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, okay, that's good. Yeah, Hey, I tell you that.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
I tell you the other thing that bothers me before
we move on. Auburn playing on a Friday night of
high school.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
I hate it. I can't stand it.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
It's terrible.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Terrible, terrible, terrible.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
I have to, Uh, I'll just record a game or
something because there's no way I can be invested in that.
And still, you know, do what I do on Friday nights.
I just think, why do we have to? You know?
And it's a Fox deal. They started last year putting
some of those Uh yep, is that conference out there
with Baylor whatever, They're kind of putting those games on
Big Big ten. I guess it is or this on
(14:06):
the Yeah, I hate. I hate for anybody to play
on Friday, I mean Friday nights high school football. Why
do we have to? Why do we have to take
away from that?
Speaker 1 (14:14):
No idea what it is, but yep, but.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
I just hate it. But anyway, just deciding to.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Hey, before I go, I got a listener and he's
one of my favorite Excuse me about this, he's one
of my favorite two. Justin John's got him a big
win at roberts Dale in his first game.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
About that he.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Did, Actually, you know, I'm gonna go down there they
play win. They play this Thursday against Alberta good, so
I'm gonna go see Justin. But yeah, they got a
big win against the Floor and he's optimistic, uh about
the season. So it should be congratulations to coach. He's
gonna I think he's gonna do a good job down there.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Yeah, I do too. Glad he won anything else, Ben
before we.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Go, that's good. Just keep Jeff straight.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
Yeah, I know at Ben Thomas preps on X and
a L dot com. I mean read you all the time,
can't the Ben.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
They can do it and you can just subscribe. We
had a you know that story about the official was
we it was notice that you can get that without subscribing.
But I hope you subscribe. I hope we get our
newsletter we got. I think I don't want to brag
on myself as mainly my team. I've got a lot
of good stuff going on. I think each week so
good deal. People are reading it.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Good deal being take care and have a great week.
We appreciate what you do, buddy.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
All right, thanks guy.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
