Speaker 1 (00:00):
Glad. Everybody with us is. It's a very comfortable Thursday.
Don't forget that. Eight oh five Lieutenant Governor will Ainsworth
will join us. Lieutenant Governor Ainsworth wants to reform the AHSAA,
and we're gonna hear firsthand his why and all that
when we have him on at eight oh five. Terry
Rose though at eight thirty. But right now we're going
to the Hamilton's hotline. We're going to zip over to
open like high school with the dogs are getting ready
(00:22):
to take on the panthers over in Smith Station. I
got Brian Moore, the head coach, waiting on the Hambleton's outline.
Good morning coach, more, Good morning, dear Mark.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
How are you guys man?
Speaker 1 (00:32):
We're good in the neighborhood. How about you?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Good? Good dropping off at school, getting ready for packing
and you know, getting ready to do your stuff together
and have meetings and breakfast and all that stuff we
do on game day.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
There you go, what do you do on game day?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well, we uh at eight, you know, the kids a
little bit later morning. For our kids, it's one of
the two mornings they come in later. We come in
on Tuesday morning at eight and then on morning at eight,
and we have a packing list this morning we'll go
through uh and UH just doubling triple check. Everybody's got
two cleats and two net paths and all that good stuff,
and so each kid brings it out on the turf.
(01:11):
We go through that. Then we go have breakfast uh
Miss Elaine in the cafeteria, Miss lenn Lee and those
folks UH feed us. We eat alongside of pre k
which is pretty cool for them. Get to see our players,
okay on on game days. And then uh and then
at at eight pot fifty, we have a special teams
run through. Uh and then we have a captain's meeting.
(01:32):
So the kids don't know who the captains are until
this morning. So uh, it's really cool. We we started
doing that a few years ago and it's we brought
it to Opalaika and it's been a cool deal. And
and honestly, UH, you know, guys are picked on like
a Sunday and their week has to be perfect. And
this week we had one of our captains, a younger guy.
(01:53):
We picked some scout team captains too, that had a
little detention and so we removed him. He is, but
but we removed him and he got replaced. So you know,
you got to have a great week. You gotta be
right all week in the classroom. You know, obviously got
to have a great week of practice. And so it's
been a cool deal and our kids to celebrate that.
And then our players wear a Sea for Captain on
(02:15):
the back of their helmet, right and they represent our programs.
So it's really cool. I like that.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I like that. Good for you. That's a way to
recognize and honor those men that have young young men
that have earned captain. Brian Moore Withthers talking little dog
football coach, you had a good win. We talked to
you about the win over last week. Let's talk about
Smith Station. The Panther's not where they want to be there.
They've got a new coach. He brings a lot of
you know, a big resume with him, knows how to win.
(02:40):
You talked about it on the Coaches Show. He seems
to be trying to run the clock, build this program
and get some confidence in this football team. Talk to
us about Smith Station. They're coming off a forty seven
zero lost to Carver, But Carver's got a good football
team too. They play Central and Carver back to back,
So tell me a little bit about what you're thinking
about Smith Station.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
First, Coach Harrison's done a really good job. I mean
I'm not just saying that. I text with him yesterday,
taught with him last week. I can see there playing
hard that what they do is an issue for people.
It kind of helps become the equalizer because of again,
like you said, run the clock, slow the game down,
limit your possessions on the other side, and keep everything
(03:22):
in a box. I mean, they're gonna at times have
all eleven players in in a ten yard you know space,
and so you got to pack in there and you
got to be right in your run fits. And it's
been difficult for people. De Mark. I mean, you watch
the central game. They took the first drive eighty yards
and scored a touchdown, two big explosive plays pass plays. Actually,
(03:44):
you know what's crazy about this scheme, this wing tea stuff,
is you know, you worry about trap and buck sweep
and speed sweep and all the things as far as
you know the true wing t folks like coach is,
but the thing you worry about the most is sneaking
guys out of the backfield. You know, wheel routes, coming
out of the backfield because you may get ten, eleven,
twelve runs in a row and the next thing you know,
(04:05):
your eyes are in the wrong spot as far as
the dB and the guys running right by you and
you can't see the ball. Like that's the problem is
you can't see the ball, you know, and guys are
you know, are running you know, clean down sideline. So
twice in the central game they had the wheel route
from the wing back wide open. Once they scored from
(04:26):
thirty one yards out. They hit a big post in
that game. So the discipline it requires to play a
team like this makes it really tough. And once again
we just don't see it. So it's hard to simulate
it at practice. It's hard to simulate the speed of it.
And again they have done just a just a really
really good job you know of you know, doing the
(04:47):
things they needed to do to be successful. So coach
has done a good job. You watch them on special teams,
they do a good job with it. They're really disciplined.
They kick the ball around everywhere. It makes it tough,
and so it's been a tough pref this week.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Okay, we're talking Smiths Station Football Panthers no black of
playing tonight at smith Station. Only two times the Smiths
Station beat up like in the series, but that really
doesn't mean anything because they square it up hope, like
us had an incredible run against the Panthers, but we're
talking about that. How has your team been this week, coach?
They had the big blow big blowout win last week.
How does your team responded this week in practice?
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Well, I think it's I think it's been our best
week of practice. I know you know that again, coaches
say that every week, but it's been a really good week.
We were starting to get healthier. We're not healthy by
any means. You know, at one point the season, we're
missing seven starters.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yeah, you didn't make a big deal out of that,
but we did.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
You're right, right, and and so you know, I mean
it doesn't matter, you know, nobody you know that's an excuse,
so we don't use it. But we were we were
missing a lot of guys. We're having those guys return.
You know, you could see Blake Johnson tonight a little bit,
which is an absolute game changer for us, has been
for two years. You will see Kobe Key, He'll start
the game tonight. You know, I just wann't clear the
(06:01):
air a little bit on Kobe. You know, a lot
of when your quarterback miss his games, a lot of speculation.
Kobe has been sick and and and so we we hate.
I won't, you know, discuss the exact what's going on,
but I just hate for him. You know that he's missed,
specifically the Auburn game that means a lot to him
as a player and to his family, so that was
really hard. And then he missed the jag game as well.
(06:22):
So you know, we're excited to get Kobe back. I mean,
obviously he's really talented, but not only is he really talented,
he he can do so much mentally, you know, he's
really smart. He's he's obviously a major player. And then
the other piece, offensively, we've missed really two more, but
one that could be back has been at young. He's
getting a lot closer to one hundred percent. We'll see,
(06:43):
you know where he's at game time. We'll make that decision. Uh.
And then Jeremy Dillard, our left guard, we'll we'll miss
him tonight. He goes back for reevaluation next week to
see if he can play. So we're starting to get healthy.
You know, last week again missing four stars on offense
was was tough, but it was good to see some
guys step up. And I expect, you know, us to
have a role for those same guys again tonight. And
(07:04):
then defensively, Lakeeddrick Burt's has been out with a rest
and so he'll be gone for about six weeks and hopefully,
you know, everything's going well with his recovery. So again
it's been good to build depth in that way. The
silver lining is a lot of kids have played, but
but again it's nice to be healthier. And the week
has been really good. I think a lot because of
the excitement of guys returning to play.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Coach you, thank you. Football team is getting.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Better, I do. I thought, you know, the first three games,
you know, the only way I can characterize it just
we weren't us. You know, we weren't clean, we weren't
extremely disciplined with like penalties, and we had so many
self inflicted ones. Like I know we've talked this to death,
but you can't turn the ball over four times against
(07:49):
Auburn and expect it doesn't matter who who's playing, like
it doesn't matter who who your opponent is. You don't
beat one region team if you turn it over four times.
And so last week we had no turnovers on offense,
it was a lot cleaner. We felt like we were
efficient in the run game, and we're starting to see
the average archs per carry d mark. You know, a
(08:10):
lot of people have asked me this year about, you know,
being able to spread the ball around and all that
kind of stuff. Obviously having our starting quarterback back tonight
will help with that, but we haven't been able to
throw the ball as much down the field as we
want to because we're in a lot of second and eight,
you know, and we haven't been able to get the
second in four, you know, and make fine or to
carry well. We saw that last week. And when you
(08:30):
do that, as you saw with with Cooper, now, then
you can put the ball in the air, you know,
on a second and two, you know, because you've got
a third down that's manageable and so againt. A lot
of factors have come into play this year, and I
really thought we were going to be extremely explosive on offense,
and I still think we can be. And maybe there's
a blessing in disguise of these injuries and things. Again,
(08:50):
as far as building depth, but but we've got to
throw the ball down the field, create explosive plays. We
had a ton of them last week, and that trend
has to continue for us to get easy oars and
be able to spread the ball around to a lot
of people. So you know, again, we're excited to have
some more pieces back. Uh, and we'll be looking forward
to to what Kobe does tonight and again another step
(09:11):
forward for our team.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
All right, coach, anything else before we go, buddy, you
want to bring up anything?
Speaker 2 (09:16):
No, I mean I pre First off, I appreciate you
guys and covering us. Yeah, extremely, you know, excited about
going back to Smiths Deve Mark. You know you you
said before you know this was a rivalry. I guess
that went away a little while. Yeah, six and seven eight,
So I always really enjoyed playing them, you know, and
and enjoyed that that rivalry and enjoyed being able to
be part of this series. So I know it'll be
(09:38):
a really packed night, you know. They they'll pack out
their side and then easy drive for our fans, and
our guys always go and travel, so we're excited about
that too.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Good deal, Good luck, Thank you for taking time to call.
Best of luck to you and your team and safe travels. Coach. Okay,
thank you, Yes,
