Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning till you've led morning, guys, excited to talk
about some of the games that happened on Friday. We
had a lot transpire in the Birmingham area.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
All right, Well, where you want to start, big boy?
How about Hoover and Hewitt Trussell.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
That's right, Yeah, we were there for that game on
location at this past Friday. We also had a few
other games, you know, in the Birmingham area. For Class
seven A, we had the Stavia Hills, Hillcrest Tuscaloosa. Thompson
played Oak Mountain. But yeah, no, this Hewitt game, Hewitt
beats Hoover seventeen to fourteen. Freshman quarterback for the Huskies,

(00:40):
Jack Floyd, the youngest son of Josh Floyd, leads Hewitt
to the victory there, and they looked really good. That's
a that's a tough loss to Hoover, that drops them
to one in three and Hewitt stays undefeated. They've won
a few good games in a row. Now, you know,
last week beating the Stavia Hill They have Hillcrest Tuscaloosa

(01:02):
next week in another big regions matchup. And I'll tell
you what, dve Mark, they looked really good.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Well, they must be they must be. What's going on
with Hoover.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
I don't well, I don't know how to I don't
know how to describe it. You know, last year it
was it was such an emotional season, which ship English
after everything that happened with Drew Gilmer and you know,
him getting fired, English getting promoted to the interim head coach.
I thought that that Hoover team played with a lot
of fire last season that I just didn't see on Friday,

(01:34):
to be honest, de Mark offense looked pretty flat. Outside
of Jonah Winston. He was defense did a really good job. Obviously,
Hoover is down their top running back, four star CJ. Cowley,
and they really lacked much of any running game. And
you know, at all on Friday, I thought the defense

(01:55):
did a good enough job. But you know at the end,
you know, when when he was trust well to make
a play and when they got down to the goal line,
they converted their chances, and whenever Hoover had a chance,
they didn't. Quarterback play Cale Fremont for Hoover was a
little bit iffy. I thought, you know, it left much

(02:15):
to be desired, and you know, overall, it just it
just doesn't seem like Hoover is as good this year
as they were last year. Like I mentioned, one in three, Uh,
the stretch doesn't get any easier for them. They they
they've still got to play Thompson, they still have to
play with Stavios. They have Provville next week and if

(02:35):
they can't convert at least two of those games, they're
gonna miss the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
De Mark, Well, go ahead, def your no.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
I was I was gonna. I was gonna ask you.
They have a full was everybody is there back.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
That they're missing? Is he did?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
He did?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
They losing to graduations injured?

Speaker 1 (02:54):
He's injured. They they lost him right before the Spain
Part game.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I believe he got injured in the i MG game,
which would have which would have been their first one
of the seasons. So he came over from Spain Park.
Had a really good season last year at Spain Park.
Like I mentioned, four star running back. Any offer you
could throw a dart on the United States and he
will have an offer from that state. You know. It's

(03:21):
it's he's one of those guys. He's just Cali and
that he was supposed to be a really big part
of that offense. This year, and you know, his lack
of presence showed. You know, there there wasn't much running
game outside of Jonah Winston at Wildcatter Jonah Winston on
a screen pass. It was a tough watch.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
All right, what else you got you want to talk
to us? A question for you is Bob Jones? Are
they for real?

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Oh? Yeah? This is this is an interesting one. We
released our VP power eight, our weekly power rankings for
Class seven A and thinking it, number eight was Bob Jones.
They've been the most convincing team to come out of
Region four. And you know, d Mark, I've told you
this for hey, maybe two years now. All I'm waiting

(04:11):
on is one of these Region four teams to absolutely
dominate all the other teams. That's what it takes to
prove that, you know, hey, we can beat one of
these other regions come playoff time. And I think Bob
Jones is a line to do that. Last week, very
very convincing win over James Clemens. You know, the Madison Bowls,

(04:34):
such a big rivalry game there, and they absolutely dominated
that game. And then you look at this week, another
great win for the Patriots, and I think they're legit.
I think that they, you know, just continue to win
games the way that they're supposed to win games when
you need to be ready to come playoff time. You know,

(04:57):
they they've got it. They've got a very prolific offense.
They are. They're air raid down to the tea. You know.
They they'll they'll line up in these three receiver sets,
four receiver sets, and they love to throw the football
and they've got a lot of ways to get it
to their playmakers, and that they do have playmakers.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
They had a good offseason too, aren't they playing with Then?
Why an't you telling me that the James Clemens quarterback
is now at Bob Jones.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
That's correct. Yeah, so James Clemens is backup last season
is now the starter at Bob Jones. He's he's a
big kid, he's got some mobility, and he's got he's
got a heck of an arm on him. I remember
during the James Clemens game, he would, man, he would
throw that thing deep and he'd connect. They're they're not
afraid to stretch the field vertically, whether it's through the

(05:44):
slaughter on the edges. And you know, they've done a
really good job scheming, scheming these receivers open. You know,
when you when you run an air raid offense like that, uh,
the the the quick game, the mashes, an extension of
the run, you know, just just getting the ball out
to everybody and getting the ball out in space. They've

(06:05):
done a very good job of that so far through
four games, and it shows with them being undefeated.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Jeffrey about to ask him something else.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Yeah, I was thinking about Central Phoenix City there. I
think they may be for real. Also, of course they
are every year, but you know the way they beat
Dothan and then then how Dothan beat Enterprise and before Yeah,
so wow, And I mean, what thirty five points in
the first quarter.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
What was it? Fifty six at halftime?

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, I'm guessing he must have played everybody on the
team for Dosan to come back to twenty you know,
they still doubled them up fifty six twenty eight.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
So yeah, And you know, I I think that this
is the best resume. Central has the best resume so
far out of Class seven eight. They came in as
our number one team, ahead of Thompson in the power ranking.
Obviously Thompson with that loss to Grace and you can't
put too much weight on it, but that really is

(07:06):
the difference. Thompson lost their out of state game, Central
won it beating the First Academy a few weeks ago,
and as region play has opened up for the Red Devil,
this is this is probably the most impressive win that
we've seen yet. This is a doping team that hung
what was it, what was it sixty nine points on

(07:29):
on Enterprise a week ago and they were almost shut
out in the first half, only scoring fourteen. You know,
you look at that and you go, hey, how can
you not see the Central team as a state title
front runner right now? You know? And you look at
bj Coleman and Donovan Crow and you know, just some

(07:49):
of these weapons that have had to grow up that
weren't in starting positions last year. Who are you know,
having to take the reins now? And you look at
that receiving core with Mike Bass and know all those
guys that Bobby Coleman has to throw to, and it's
a it's a really impressive group. And you know Knicks
always has one of those, but especially now more than ever.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
He does, and he's the best team you've seen be Thompson.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Well, I haven't seen Phoenix City yet. But yeah, right now,
I would have to stay Thompson. I think that they still,
you know, have everything that you need to win a
state championship. They they defeated Oak Mountain forty one to nothing,
and then they beat Tuscaloosa County sixty nine to nothing
the week before, So their their defense is as good

(08:41):
as ever and they're winning the region games that Freeman's
been winning here since yeah fifteen, you know, and it
will get tougher for them. Vestavia Hills coming up next
on the schedule. I think that'll be a big test
for Freeman and his Warriors. You know, Vestavia a team
that historically has played Thompson pretty close. You know over

(09:02):
the past four to five years. They always give them
a good game. They always have a good game plan
coming in and you know, at the end of the day,
it just comes down to execution. I remember a few
years ago it was a mush punt that costed the
Stavia Hills and hands at the game. You know, whether
it's an interception, you know, a few like it was
a few years ago. So they've they've been in these

(09:24):
games with Thompson before, especially come playoff time, but they're
yet to be able to beat the Warriors, whether it's
at home or on the road.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
All right, man, my man, I was Yeah, we had
a little some confusion in the studio.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
I was trying to get Blad Battiste with Baba preps
with us. All right, Glad, where else you want to go?
You talk to the big scoos.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
You got any small skools if you want to bring
up some smaller classifications that's been playing well.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Well. You saw you know what Donaho canceled their game
against Wadley. Yeah, I mean, I don't know how you
do that. That's a region I know, I know, you're
just not gonna play it.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
They didn't play it. They said they were too physical
and didn't have enough coach.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Washman's and here have you ever heard of that coach Wassmer?

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Oh yeah, yeah, have you heard of that? What well done?
A hole forfeited?

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Yeah, they should get a heavy fine too, That's what
I thought.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, I don't see. I don't see how you can
do take.

Speaker 4 (10:23):
Them out of the you take them out of the
playoffs and find them and because you don't want to,
you don't wanna take them out of the complete season
because it affects all the other teams on their schedule.
But you just don't do those sort of things. If
you've declared to have a team, you have a team,
and you beat for the championship. Play absolutely meah, I agree.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
We yeah, a few other ones in one AD that
were pretty surprising. Spring Guard and loses to what Bill
forty one to twenty six and Barry Fayette really good
running back there in Lake Norrith. They end up falling
to Hubbardville forty four to twelve. A couple of big
lower class upsets down there in one A. The number

(11:10):
one team in Class one A according to the Sports
Riders Association was Tucklus to Academy. They lose to Isabella
twenty one to nineteen. Everybody else handles their business. We
had another big game in Class two A between Pleasant
Valley and Pisga. This was a Pickham's game for us

(11:30):
this past week and it was a really interesting one
to pick. We knew it'd be a close game, but
Pisga still looks as good as ever. In two A
is you know they'll have to run through Kousa Christian
in the North there as well as Diligent, but they're
getting themselves ready for another great run. If you remember
Demark they lost their head coach to Boaz Luke Pruitt,

(11:55):
who's over there trying to get the Pirates in shape.
But it seems like Pisga really hadn't skip a beat.
And then when you go to class six days, some
of these other Birmingham schools, you know, really top heavy,
with Parker and Clay Chalkville and Saine Park. They all
handle their business. And and I think the biggest one,

(12:16):
you know from the Birmingham metro is is Mountain Brook
losing the pell City ten to three. I saw that that,
you know, that was that was an odd game, and
it seems like coach Gentry there at pel City has
been able to rattle off a few, you know, I
think I think the Panthers can be a playoff team
this year without a doubt. And I don't know, I

(12:38):
don't know what happened to Mountain Brook. That was very
very unlike them in that football.

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Game, christ the Central pretty good, aren't They've led?

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Christian? I'm sorry, yes, yeah, no, they're they're they're they're
as good as ever right now. They beat Faulkville twenty
sixth to nothing, and I will we we should see
them as a continuous playoff team and you know, now
they've got to rush out the helm the season and
you know who knows.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
Right, Yeah, that was my most surprising score was the
Mountain Brook losing to Pale City in three A.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Though, mars Hill's got to.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Be the cream of that crop right now, don't you think.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Yeah? Absolutely, Coach Higgins is won at every classification and
when they're in four A in a few years, I
don't anticipate much change. You know, It's it's tough. I
think I think three A to four A is probably
the toughest one of the toughest jumps you can make,

(13:42):
because you know you'll have the Jackson, the Saint Michael.
You know, Cherokee County just just schools with a lot
of size, and it'll be interesting to see if mars
Hill can match that size. You know, Emont has an
off week, Geraldine handled business, t R. Miller handled business
as well as five. So there, I mean, there's still

(14:03):
a lot of competition in that three A North. You know,
you look at Gorda as well. They get a win
over number ten Winfield thirty five to twenty one. You know,
Gordo was really interesting this season. A lot of unbeaten,
a lot of dominoes to fall. But you look at
Mars Hill and they're still just the most impressive team.

(14:25):
Hudson Higgins, Darryl Higgins's son, the lead back there, that
option offense. Man, they continue to roll. They've done a
very good job.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
You know.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
The first year they played for state championship, of course,
was in one A and it was in Auburn.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
They had the biggest offensive line, that biggest one there.
It did. Yeah, they had the biggest offensive line, you know,
and you know they're you know, pound for pound exercise men.
They're in a perfect spot in the state too.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Oh yeah, they can pull talent.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
From Tennessee and Mississippi.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Yep, they can. They can pull a lot of those talents.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
Although I I talked to a parent he said they
were all homegrown. Then I was like, yeah, really and
he lived in Tuscobia.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Well, I don't know how you can be homegrown when
your football programs only existed for five years. I know,
I know.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
There you go anything else, plad you want.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
To hit on, man, I don't know, it's it's it's
shaping up to be a good year. I I do
want to give a shout out to the Stavia Hills.
They did beat Hillcrest Tuscaloosa forty four. Anniston beats Alexandria,
that was a really great win for them twenty to eighteen.

(15:38):
The Bulldogs look really good and Bessemer City looking to
take control of that region, you know, with Huey Town.
They beat Central Tuscaloosa twenty eight to seven. Really good
win there for the Bestmer City Tigers is. They're trying
to you know, win a win a region championship. Another
interesting game and the last one I'll mention d was

(16:00):
Penson Valley in Oxford. This was a close game. For
the longest time. Penson Valley was up for a big
portion of this game, and you know, you look at
the trajectory that both of these programs have been on
in the past five years. It's been Oxford up and
Penson down. But this was a great rivalry game and

(16:21):
a really close game. And it it actually ended with
two missed extra points that would have forced overtime, but
two penalties on Penson Valley on both extra points. Oxford
converts the third one and ends up winning the football
game as time expired. So you know, coach Adams is

(16:42):
obviously having a tougher time this year than in previous years,
and we'll see how Oxford finishes out.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
All right, Glad, tell everybody where they can read all
your materials, Ladd and get.

Speaker 1 (16:51):

Speaker 2 (17:13):
All right, buddy, thank you very much. Blad, have a
great week. What's you go on Friday night? Where you hitting?

Speaker 1 (17:18):
It's it's tough. I'm undecided right now, you know, And
this might be one of those weeks where I hit
a lower class game as well, you got it. There
should be some of those, you know, really good ones.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I will tell you this.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
I do think on the twenty fifth, a few weeks
from now, I'll be headed to glenn Wood and Wadley.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
All right, you know.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
We'll see, if you know, we'll see if you know,
everybody doesn't want to play them. I assume Glen would
play that game.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
Ain't no doubt about that.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
I don't know what's goo will be, but Ben would
will play them.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
I'll assure you of that. So all right, Blad, keep
up the good work. Thanks for what you do. If
I won't see you Friday, we'll talk to you next week,
my friend.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
Okay, we'll do it. Thank you, Mary, you got it.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
