Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yes, sir, thank you very much for having us. We're
excited to be here to be part of what is
going on in the community and hearing all these great
coaches and the plans that they got going forward. I've
really enjoyed just being here and being part doing to
talk about Southern Christian Let you guys know sort of
who we are, what we do, and we're an eight
(00:22):
man football program right here in this area.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
We've got kids.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
From all the way up in Harrison County, Georgia, David, Alabama.
And we are primarily a homeschool based organization, so we
have homeschoolers that play with us, and we have some
of the virtual learners in this area that also will
come and play.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
They'll play ball with us too. We started in two thousand.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
During the COVID pandemic and we've battled our way through
our first year. This is going into year six for
us now, and we're very grateful for this community and
opal like and in particular like in Auburn. There's just
really no other place for football like this community and
(01:08):
being part of it. We actually play our games at
the old historic More Stadium in Oplaika. We get to
play over there in the old stadium and it is
our home and we love it. And they were wanting
to move us over to the to the brand new
field at Floral with the turf and everything, and man,
I just felt like Moore Stadium was our home. So
(01:29):
we got a lot of help from the mayor and
the park board to keep that facility open for us
so we could play. And we're very, you know, very
grateful and thankful for the mayor and the park board
and city council for doing that for us.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
And you know, my hat.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Is off to you guys for allowing us to play there.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
We're glad.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Southern Christian graduated most of our line last year and
that was pretty much it. We had one specialist that
graduated as well, but we graduated our entire offensive and
defensive line, with the exception of our center.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Who is back this year as a as a senior.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
And so going into the season, just to hit a
couple of points, it looks like we're going to.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Be really young on the line. Our line will.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Be mostly sophomores, a couple of upperclassmen, and we've got
some hard working guys. We've got young men coming in,
you know. Defensively, we're gonna have, you know, more speed.
We're gonna try to focus more on speed in our game.
In eight man football, speed is key on defense. It's
(02:38):
not necessarily about size, especially defensively. The where we've had
the most success is when we have really fast defensive
ends and they're able to charge through and create a
lot of chaos. That's kind of the name of the
game with eight man football. Sometimes we have to play
on the big field. So our fields, some of you
guys don't know, our fields are are forty yards by
(03:01):
eighty yards in dimension, and that's a standard field. But
a lot of the teams we play, actually they have
to rent their fields, so we end up playing one
hundred yard by fifty yard fields and that's a lot
of space for an eight man team on the edges,
and so speed is vital is key, especially on the
edges for eight man football. I think we've got some
(03:23):
great speed on the edges. We've got some of those.
One of those guys that are here on the edge,
I want to talk to about my eight seniors real quick.
Gabe Fenny is my returning center. Gave Fenny's from Phoenix City.
Branden Jerkins tight He plays tight end for US. He
also plays basketball for US. Luke Rudd actually recovering from
(03:46):
an injury he got during the baseball season, and he
should be back about what three weeks.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Or so something like that.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Luke Hampton is from Smith Station, Alabama, and he'll be
playing slot receiver for US a lot. Lawton Kerran, he's
eight Man All American last year and he plays half
back and in the offseason, Lawton likes to be a cowboy,
so he didn't play any other sports with US. And
then Elijah Bailey over here, number five, he's an eight
(04:18):
Man All American last year quarterback, outside linebacker, and he's
one of.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Those speed guys on the edge.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Elijah had a lot of active ages in eight man
football last year, nineteen and forty one total yards, nationally
ranked player for US, and he's actually from about an
hour and a half away from Harris County, Georgia.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Way over there.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Jagger the Senior right here, a number fifteen, two time
All American eight man football player last year, one hundred
and twenty nine tackles, fifty one I'm sorry on one
hundred and seventy tackles.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Sorry, that's the next one.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Twenty three hundred all purpose ye so it had a
great year last year and we're really looking for a
lot out of Jagger this year. And our last senior,
Jed Scott, number seven wide receiver, cornerback, and Jed had
one hundred and twenty nine tackles, fifty one passes defended
last year, and twenty two yards per catch. So these
(05:19):
guys are this is the core with one more Lowton current.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
He is the core of our team. They all started
together when they were in junior high.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
And here they are all seniors, and we have big
expectations out of these guys. The big team in our conference,
which is the Alabama Christian Sports Conference, is the evangel
Lightning out of Alabaster, Alabama, and they tend to dominate.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
We've beat them every time we played them in jv ball.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
We just haven't been able to square up and beat
them in the varsity until this year. And we're wanting
to uncrown the Lightning this year. That's the big goal.
They did beat us last year. We went seven and
two in the regular season, losing to evangel and East
Central eight and four overall for the whole year.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
We got an.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Invite down to the National Homeschool Conference in Panama City
to play and we actually ended up second there, so
runner up for the eight man Small School National Championship.
We are currently, as it stands, really young. We've got
(06:36):
eight seniors and there's a pretty good fall off after that,
and so we've been working extremely hard with the younger guys,
and we have been practicing limited because of the heat,
but we have been practicing a good bit and I
think that we're going to have one of the best
years we've ever had, and hopefully you guys will. I'll
be talking to d Mark and Jeff and Vanning these
(06:58):
guys on Friday night on the Coaches Show and enjoying
that time together, and we'll be lots of great things
to report going forward. So all right, coach, good job,
do me a favorite go over your conference that if
I know it's in the program, and if you will,
if you'll go over that.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
With his coach.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
The Alabama Christian Sports Conference we are in eight man
football conference. We also play other sports within the conference.
We also compete in the non Big three sports with
the AI s A for state championships, soccer and golf
and all the things, and we have bass fishing, and
(07:39):
all those things too.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
But our conference, we've got et Central, We've.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Got the the Warriors from what's the name of the
word Lighthouse, Thank you, the Lighthouse Warriors, thank you. And
uh we have the Ezekiel Knights out of Montgomery, Alabama,
which is not that far. So there are only five
teams in our football conference. There are there are actually
(08:04):
eight teams all together in our small conference, but right
now we only have five teams playing football, so and
we're all eight man football.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Hey, coach, how has participation been this summer? I know
you mentioned that the heat, it's been hot, but your
players coming from state lines and then all across Alabama.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
And then my second question is travel an issue or
a challenge?
Speaker 5 (08:28):
In your eyes?
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Travel is an issue. Travel is tough for us and
all our all our families. You know, they do all
their own traveling. We're not we're not bus We're not
in a bus yet. So Uh, yeah, that is that
is a really tough thing. And as far as the
way that these guys have worked in the off season,
it's been amazing to watch. Uh, we've had a really
(08:51):
great turnout. We have a gym that we use and
the guys have shown up and gotten stronger. I believe
we've gotten a good bit faster. We're going to be
much more tough defensively. Just because of those things and
the turnout. I couldn't have asked for a better turnout
this off season. It's the best turnout we've ever had
(09:12):
in six years.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Coach, I just want you.
Speaker 6 (09:17):
To know that Jerry Bivarro and I do the Friday
night call in show and we would welcome you to
call in talk about your players. And we've got a
question over here.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Okay, awesome during the off season. How much do you
think your team has grown? Great question?
Speaker 1 (09:37):
So in the off season, the objective was strength. We
knew we were going to be running an incredible amount
once the season started, and so we've seen some impressive
games max.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Wise and strength wise in the off season.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
The guy we had a few guys that you know,
they have to work and so they weren't able to
do nearly as much. But they're working out on their own,
and from what I've seen on the field so far,
it was an impressive game.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
In the off season. We did well.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Yeah, coach, you're mentioning some of the disparities in terms
of field size, that you have to play on sometimes,
So how do you account for that in your game
planning and you know, play design and things like that.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Absolutely so our offensive coordinator Jeff Miller, he's.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
It's misdirection.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
In Amen football and Amen football, everybody knows there's a
lot of space, and so you'll have very very few
teams that will just run it up up the gut
on you over and over.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Lighthouse is one of those teams.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
They'll they'll run three out of plays just up up
in the a gap, just right at your defense.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
But most teams will.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Do a lot of play action RPO very common in
what we do, a lot of option, a lot of
triple option, trying to get to the edge because that's
where you know you've got a skilled player and you
want to put that just like a love of the man.
You want to with that skill player one on one,
you know, in space with their best skill player and see,
you know who comes out on top.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
And I think that is really the plan for us
going forward.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
We've got guys that have strong enough to run it
up the middle of sometimes and you know, tough enough
to do it. But the idea really is to get
to the edges. To get the ball in the air.
You know, Jed is going to have a great year
receiving this year. Defensively, the way that we account for
it is speed.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
It's what I talked about earlier. Coach Jeff Bailey is here.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
He's our defensive coordinator, and the objective is speeding chaos.
We want to create a lot of chaos, not give
guys time to throw the ball.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
We've got to play Jacksonville Christian. That kid is an amazing.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Quarterback and we put it on him last year and
he's coming back for blood this year, I'm sure, and
so we've really got to get in there and.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Keep him from having time because that's the objective. Chaos. Absolutely.
Speaker 6 (11:59):
Coach fun your players, come up, give us your name,
and I have a question for you, Jacker Scotty, sir,
this is for all of you. How are you preparing
during what may be it seems like one of the
hottest summers we've had in a long time. How are
you preparing and what are your goals for this year?
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Yes, sir, we had a lot of summer workouts coming
in a lot of guys coming from baseball. Had a
good little playoff run there, but coming into baseball end
of the summer, it's really hot. We got a gym
that's pretty hot in there, so we got water going
and fans going, and it really helped us a lot
stepping onto the field. And I think we put on
(12:45):
pads earlier than most teams. Heard somebody mention it earlier
that they hadn't put pads on. But we've been in
pads for two or three weeks now and it really
helped us a lot. Just getting conditioned for the season
coming up because eight man we don't come off the
field like we play both sides, kickoffs, all of it.
So it's definitely helped us and it's really conditioned us
(13:07):
and we're ready. So goals for this year. We fell
short in the playoffs. Last year we played the team
East Central, actually our rivals, so we lost one in
the regular season and then came up short in the playoffs.
So got a lot of goals to go through, So
looking forward to it.
Speaker 7 (13:32):
Elijah Bailey, quarterback, And I'd say for as seniors is
kind of we're already expecting the heat. I mean, we're
used to it. But for the younger kids, is this
kind of hard for them? You can tell even for
the ones that's been in the gym preseason, so as seniors,
trying to push them and I mean, we get plenty
(13:55):
of your brakes, but we're just trying to push as
hard as we can.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
And I'd say our.
Speaker 7 (14:00):
Goals just to make it all the way this year
and not fall short. Last year we lost to East Central,
like Jacker said, and we're trying to push ourselves as
hard as we can to get that win, get the championship,
and do it for the first time for SCA.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Yeah, like they said, we were in the gym like
for a while most of the summer actually, and I
think me and like some of the guys, we started
about three weeks before everybody else did, and that's how
we got acclimated. We don't have air conditioned in our gym.
We have just straight heat, so it's basically summer all
year for us. And goals for this year for me,
(14:46):
I'd say a lot more receiving yards, more pancakes than
I got last year. But I led the team in
pancakes last year, and I would say, well, we want
to win a state championship this year.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
That's my goal. Coach.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
I had one more question for you, So if I
understand this correctly, you can lose the state championship but
still win a national championship.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Is that correct? That's correct, it's wild, so you get
an invite.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
There are two divisions at the national playoff in Panama City.
There's a small school division and there's a large eight
man school division. We played in the small school division
last year and came in runner up. We lost to
a team out of Louisiana River Oaks, which is actually
a public school team in Louisiana that plays eight man football,
and we play eight man teams that are public in
(15:38):
Georgia as well, but we fell short.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
In that game.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
We won our first game twenty seven zero. We beat
a team out of Pembroke Pines, Florida. So there's a
lot of and they're going to expand that even this
year to sixteen teams, so we're going to double the
size of the tournament and it's going to be a
much tougher tournament. So instead of just playing two games,
we may have three or four games if you if
you win them all, and.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
That's over a three day period.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
So it's a lot of football and it's very grueling
on the guys, and it's tough
