Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jonathan. He's on the Fox Sports and sometimes if I
don't have a bet down and Jonathan likes a particular horse,
then I'll just call up Twin Spires and bet the
same horse.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Well, hopefully that works out for you.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
It has worked out okay so far.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
There you go, a hight Jonathan were.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Saturday Pregnance Freakness. Who do we like in this race?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, it's interesting. Yesterday morning, Monday morning, I'm not sure
when this will air. Yesterday morning, Monday morning, it was
announced that Journalism, who was the Kentucky Derby favorite and
they weren't sure if he's gonna run, who ran second
in the Derby, decided he was gonna run. I'm sure
your listeners have already heard. Its Sovereignty, the Derby winner,
has decided to skip the Freakness and train up to
(00:55):
the Belmont, which is unfortunate. I think that Racy would
love to see it opportun for a horse to take
a chance at a triple crown, but that's not in
the plans for Sovereignty. So we're happy to have Journalism
running who I liked in the Derby, who I thought
him more. Sovereignty would win the Derby and I think
Journalism is the best horse in this group, and although
(01:15):
he'll be a short price, I think he's definitely the
horse to beat. And there's an interesting one and Goal
Oriented a very lightly race horse. He won on the
undercard of Kentucky Derby Day. But the one thing that's
holding me back with him a little bit is I
feel like it's a little bit too much too soon.
He's coming back off of fourteen days, just like Journalism is,
but this will always be his career start. And with
(01:37):
Goal Oriented his ownership group, I don't think they were
planning on running him here. I think that they had
a horse called Cornucopian who ran at Aqueduct a few
weeks ago. They thought was gonna win that race to
set him up nicely for this one. He was beat.
And then they had a horse Rodriguez, who they were
gonna was supposed to run the Derby, had a little
bit of a foot injury. Then thought they were going
(01:58):
to run him here. They couldn't on him here, so
now it just felt like the ownership group was like, well,
let's just go to the third stringer. And I don't
think Goal Oriented is necessarily a third stringer. He might
be the most talented of all of them, but a
third stringer in the sense that he's a little bit
late to the party. So I think he's a little
bit interesting. But like I said, journalism is definitely the
horse to beat. Oh yeah, we talked about it.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I think sovereignty. It didn't run because Shake Muhammad just
doesn't need the money.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
No, I don't think it's just I mean, I think
Shake Mo probably more than anyone wants to win these
big races, right, So I don't I don't necessarily think
it's a it was a financial thing. I think that
Bill Mott can occasionally be considered a conservative trainer. His
whole idea was why rush this horse back in two weeks.
It doesn't necessarily change his value. If we run in
(02:48):
and we win win the Belmont in five weeks, that
could be a more significant thing. It's probably gonna be
easier on the horse, It'll probably allow the horse potentially
to have a longer career. That's that's all. I mean,
that's that's just possibility. I guess when you when you're
you know you're saying it. I don't think there's anything
wrong with running a horse back in fourteen days. But
(03:09):
I don't know. I mean, you know, and there's the
other thing too, is like you know, I mean the
horse might you know, be a little sore or something,
and and you know Bill Mott's not streaming at the
top of the lungs. You know, the horse is sore,
We're not going to run it back. There's probably a
lot of reasons we don't understand. Fortunate, Like I said,
but I don't think to answer your question that has
anything to do with with Sheik Muhammad and his financial situation.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Jeff and I were talking about the during the break
before the after the show, a live show, But how
long do you think did it normally take for a
horse between races of this count I mean, yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Mean you see it a lot in some of the
lower level races where horses will run back on a
week's rest. Back in the day, horses used to run
back on week's rest all the time. I mean, I
don't have the numbers in front of me, but I
you know, some of the biggest horses we've ever had
in racing have come back and done things five seven
days later. The modern day trainer has found and I
(04:10):
think probably because of the perse sizes, has found it
to be more more of an opportunity, more opportunistic to
wait five or six weeks for to get a big
performance for a big purse, and a lot of times
that's kind of where the game is gone. But you know,
you ask a horseman that if a horse you know
can run back in two weeks, you know, I don't
think it's any problem. And you look at the record
(04:31):
of Kentucky Derby winners that run in the previous it's
pretty good. You know, how many horses come back and win.
Because if you're in form on the first Saturday in May,
then you're probably still in form on the third Saturday even.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Well, I was My comment was the Jeff was if
you asked the owner, they can run every day. If
you ask the trainer, then they need weeks. Part hard.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yeah, I mean I think that I think that I
I think that, you know, two weeks seems I could probably.
I think a week turnaround is probably pretty quick. I
think that it can happen occasionally for some horses, but
I think that, you know, two to three weeks is
probably just fine. But I think that trainers have found
they potentially can get their optimal performances by having four
(05:17):
to five weeks.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Well, it used to be that there were very few
big money races, and now they're just all of all
kinds of them. So if they choose not to run
in a particular race, then there's another one with a
huge purse, you know, just.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Hurt the Preakness. Yeah. One of the things I think
that's hurt the Preakness a little bit is the fact
that our Belmont stakes for the last, you know, last
year in the next couple of years has moved upstate
to Saratoga, and it's a mile and a quarter rather
than a mile and a half. And I think that that,
you know, people see that as a great opportunity. You
get to Saratoga, you're at Saratoga. It's great for the owners,
it's great for everyone. It's the Belmont. It's a mile
(06:02):
and a quarter. And I think that a lot of
times when the Belmont was a mile and a half,
I think sometimes some people didn't necessarily see that as
a target, so they would go ahead and take advantage
of the Preakness being two weeks later to mile in
three sixteenths. But it's you know, look, I don't I
hope they don't change it. It is, you know, with
two weeks and then three weeks to the Belmont. You know,
(06:23):
I I I'm hopeful that they'll just keep it the same.
And it's unfortunate that things like this will happen occasionally,
but that's what makes it special.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, I'm a traditionalist. Let's do it like everybody else
has done. It's just.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
You.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
And if they do change it, then you know, you'll
have to put an asterisk by the the horse.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yeah. And I and look, I'm not one. I'm not
one who in sports who has a hard time with
adjusting to the times, right, I mean, I think that
that's I think that that that the thing I hate
the most is, oh, that's just not how we do it.
I think that's an annoying thing to say in sports.
You know sometimes things of all we learn more about
a lot of different topics and you change things when
(07:05):
it comes to you know, how they protect the quarterbacks
in football. I know some people might find that to
be annoying, but I think that we found that that
they're in a vulnerable position. They're the stars of the game,
and let's protect them so that the sport can can
can thrive. The same with you know, with with hockey,
making the guys wear you know, shield that didn't used
to have to wear shields now where you know, I
(07:27):
just think that adjusting to the times is not is
not necessarily a bad thing. But as far as the
Triple crowd is concerned, I don't think it's falls in
that category.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
I agree agree on what changes did they make at Pimlico.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I mean, I think, I mean nothing that I know.
I know they've done some construction the Maryland Jockey Club,
and I'm not one hundred percent shurre of the details basically,
And and Stronik are first who put on the Preakness. Uh,
they have some sort of a deal worked out where
the race still exists, but it's the least and I'm
not sure on the details of that. But nothing, nothing,
nothing to the nothing to the viewers eyes will be different.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Is anything in particular you like on the undercard?
Speaker 2 (08:09):
You know, I haven't done one hundred percent job on
the undercard yet, and I'm trying to just kind of
pop through to see if there's anything that jumps out
at me. Oh, there is a horse on the undercard
named Booth. He is running in the Let's see here,
he's in the fourth race, the Maryland Sprint. I don't
(08:30):
know what price he'll be, but I think he's probably
one of the best, if not the best sprinter in
the country. So he's in the fourth race on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Very good, fantastic Jonathan, thank you. Which which network are
you going to be on? Uh?
Speaker 2 (08:45):
I'm will be on I'm always on Fox Sports, whether
it be f S two, f S one, or for
for some of the big races on on tick Fox.
But this weekend the Freakness is NBC, so we'll be
we'll be uh, we'll be doing New York racing on
on Fox Sports two or Fox Sports one. Uh, while
the while the Preakness is going on. But then in
three weeks after the Preakness for Belmont will be on
(09:08):
Big Fox.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Fox Fox has the Belmont. So yeah, Jonathan, thank you
for spending time with us. Certainly appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Thanks very much.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Have a good weekend. I hope you do. Take care.
That's Jonathan Kitchen handicapper, Andy Camper Deluxe and it Deluxe handicapper.
Uh what Louisiana, Texas? I think you live in Texas. Yeah,
thank you, I think you're right. We talked about that before,
but thank you for getting they.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
We'll be back on the mark right after this
