(00:05):
Welcome to Overtime, the only radioshow to appear in six different Stanley Kubrick
films. You can look about theshows in there. I don't know how
we made it out there, butwe did. On today's episode of over
in time, Craig Healey, whois basically the guru of FCS football,
which a lot of people know isone double a football still even though they
change the name like twenty years ago. He's gonna come on and talk about
(00:27):
what he thinks will happen in FCSthis year. That, of course,
is the division that you and hcompetes in. Lot going on in FCS
football. The Dakota is usually strongand this year will be no exception.
We talked to Craig about that, then we joined Antoine Cwright will join the
show. Antoine is a democratic strategistworks as don't company called Blueprint Strategy LLC.
(00:49):
Also does stuff for CBS News, writes a whole bunch of different places,
and we kind of talk about howracism making a huge comeback, especially
especially the j is slavery. Slaveryis having a moment with Republican politicians and
they're suddenly suddenly into it, whichis uh, Yeah, that's that's kind
(01:11):
of disturbing. So we talked toAntoine about that, who was a you
know, we in New Hampshire thatthis is a pretty white state. Antoine's
a black dude, and he hasa unique perspective on that. He has
some thoughts he might not hear listeningto traditional or reading listening or reading two
traditional New Hampshire media. So alwaysgoing to get Antoine's thoughts. Very very
(01:32):
smart dude. Always loved talking tohim. This week was wild when it
comes to speaking of like racism.Praig or you was in the news because,
uh, the New Hampshire part ofEducation Frank Kettle Blue is the Commissioner
of Education Drew Klein, who we'vedunked on on this program before, and
this week we kind of threw somewindmills down deservedly. So not just out
(01:55):
of nowhere and not just like meand not just Chris Ryan, but other
people that came on the show hadhad some thoughts on on Drew Klein and
his how do I say this withoutwithout sounding too low brow? His idiocy.
This week, Drew Klein was reallycaping up for prager you to have
a financial literacy program take part ofin uh new New Hampshire school It's Drew
(02:17):
Klein is like the chair of theNew Hampshire Department of Education. He also
hosts a radio show and a competingradio station, and he worked for the
Josiah Bartlett Center. It's got alot of got a lot of stuff going
on, which raised a few eyebrowswith some folks. But anyway, and
they wanted Pregger You to UH,which is not a university, it's not
(02:37):
a school, it's not credited. It's basically this guy Dennis Prager, who's
an extreme right wing dude. Theywanted his program on financial literacy to be
a part of New Hampshire schools. This cost some controversy because a lot of
the other preger You material is quitefrankly racist, sexist, productive. It's
it's it's some really some really outthere stuff, like even for or the
(03:00):
far right, it's kind of outthere. There's a video that circulated about
uh. You know, there's acartoon Christopher Columbus that tells, UH,
selling these cartoon kids slavery actually wasn'tall that bad because you know, you
know, at least at least thepeople are still alive, and you know,
if you read any depictions of slaveryor first hand accounts from slaves,
they all pretty much to a personsaid, yeah, I probably would have
(03:22):
rather been dead than been a slave. But anyway, so there was that.
There's some videos of of of mentelling women, you know, if
you just smile more, you you'dbe more productive, and you you know,
women are made to be wives andmothers, and that's pretty much it.
So that's I mean, it's reallyit's it's you know, the the
gender stuff is like some nineteen forties, nineteen fifties stuff that prager you puts
(03:43):
out, and you know, therace stuff is some real like seventeen hundreds
bs. And the argument coming fromfolks like Drew Klein and you know Jason
Osborne who's the majority leader in theirHampshire house, who was using the N
word well into his thirties pretty casually. The argument for those folks was like,
you just ignore all the racial stuffand the gender stuff of prag are
(04:09):
you and we're none of that's beingis we're just using the financial literacy stuff,
which is to me is like sayingif you went to a restaurant and
then they're one part of the restauranthad rats in one dining room, but
you were in a dining room onthe other side, Like, just ignore
the rats that are like on thatside. The rest of the restaurant's perfectly
clean. Everything's fine. It doesn'tmake a whole lot of sense. Now,
(04:31):
I'm just a dude that had kidsin public schools, who used to
get hit with chairs for a living, who happens to have a radio show
and talks about sports and politics alot. So I don't know. Maybe
I'm missing something. Maybe I'm asimpleton. Maybe when something like prag or
You espouses all sorts of wildly likeracist and sexist stuff, I feel like
(04:51):
you shouldn't use any of that. That shouldn't be the State of New Hampshire
shouldn't say, yeah, we're we'rethis is our brand pragor You. We're
gonna use this instead of teachers. We're just gonna have our kids watch a
Racy's huestube channel. Maybe maybe it'sjust me and I feel like that's a
bad idea, but look, that'sthat's how I feel. Drew Kline even
(05:14):
put out some on his Twitter feed, said here watched these videos about financial
literacy from pragor You, and ofcourse you can't watch them because you have
to subscribe and give money to PragerYou to watch these stupid videos. So
that was while the depart of Educationvoted to table this for further study,
which was also interesting because Drew Klindespent the entire week telling everybody how great
(05:38):
Prager You stuff was, and thenhe voted to do further study on it
when he was, you know, kind of he was there John the Baptist
this week, but apparently he hasn'tlooked at it. So which one is
it? Are they great or doyou need to look at him more?
I don't know. It was itwas a little contradictory, but that's been
tabled for a month. When it'sgonna come up again, I have no
(05:58):
doubt that these folks will vote topass this because the type of folks we
have in charge of the Department ofEducation right now are it's It's not great
us. It's really not great ifyou speak to public school teachers or parents
who have kids in public schools. You know, my daughter just graduated from
high school last year, so Iguess technically I don't have kids in public
schools anymore. But that's that's moreof a recent development. But if you
(06:20):
talk to teachers in public schools, parents and kids in public schools, they'll
tell you, like freak guttle Blueand the folks in the Department of Education,
New Hampshire have done pretty much everythingthey can to screw up public schools.
Now, thanks to the work ofteachers and administrators, i'd say you're
here for public schools still do apretty damn good job. But I mean
they're fighting a battle against you know, the people that should be helping them
(06:42):
out, not trying to tear thingsdown and privatize education, which just seems
why when you privatize education you getthings like preger you and I don't think
that's that would be good for anybody. It's it's wild. It shouldn't be
having. You expect these stories outof Florida where they use all all the
prager you stuff, you don't reallyexpect it to happen in New Hampshire.
(07:03):
So that was a little disturbing thisweek. But you know, the motion's
been tabled for now, it'll comeback up at some point, which just
goes to show you, Like peopleask me, you know, how do
you kind of how and why doyou pay attention to all these news things
when most of it is depressing,And I say to them, ay,
(07:23):
that's a very good point. Mostof it is depressing, U B.
People will try to sneak stuff likepreger you by you. They'll try to
oki doki with that when you're notpaying attention U And you know, in
the middle of summer when most peoplearen't vacation in August, this preger you
stuff got brought brought up at theState House or the Department Education, like
right after school's got out in July, when they thought no one would be
(07:45):
paying attention to it, and theywere going to vote on in August,
when you know most people are onvacation. So really this was this was
pretty suspicious. But that's why. That's why you gotta watch all this stuff
so someone doesn't try to to okidokyo with some pregger you b as.
But anyway, when do we comeback, we'll talk to Craig Hilly about
FCS football. That is on theother side of this break. This is
(08:05):
over time, keep it here, join us today on overtime. He is
pretty much the voice you look toowhen it comes to FCS Football Craig Heiey.
He is the senior writer and editorand stats beforems FCS and the analyst
dot com. Craig, thanks somuch for being on the program. Let's
(08:26):
appreciate it. Pleasure to be herejustin thank you, thank you and U.
Yeah, the summer, the summergoes by pretty quick, and we're
we're three weeks away, maybe alittle less for some teams from football kicking
off FCS is what we focus onhere. We have two FCF teams of
the state. I of course doradio for the University of New Hampshire.
But yeah, that's an exciting timeof year, isn't it. It feels
(08:48):
like Dylan Lowby was just racking upall those yards in the playoffs and suddenly
here we are on the next season. Yeah. The last game you and
age played was at a forty fivemile an hour wind and Holy Cross in
that press box that's a less ofthe size of my dining room. But
anyway, so here we are. We're ready to go. The top twenty
(09:09):
five polls are out, no surprise, defending chimps South Dakota stately, the
coaches poll and your poll as well. Could anyone challenge them? This year.
I mean North Dakota States obviously ateam you think of. Uh you
know, we of course would liketo think you and Ah will have to
say about that. I thought HolyCross might have been the second best team
in the country last year. Whatdo you think. That's a great question.
I think as long as South DakotaState stays healthy, they're they're gonna
(09:33):
repeat justin. I mean, theyare so loaded on offense, not just
with returning players but NFL caliber kindof players. They have enough on defense,
they had the system down. Theyactually have a four game winning streak
against the Bison, which nobody elseeven comes near. So yeah, I
(09:54):
think they've separated for this year fromfrom North Dakota State, which is sort
of over coming some player losses, some key player losses. So Montana State,
I think is a definitive number threegoing into the year. But boy,
I just think South Dakota State wason another level last year and seems
to be going into this year. It's uh, yeah, it's going to
(10:15):
be. It's interesting in FCS becauseeverybody knows that Dakotas are are usually among
the favorites. I feel like Williamand Mary who un hs split the CIA
title with last year. Uh,definitely has a ton of talent, and
it doesn't play them again this year, last year and this year in the
in the what's now the huge CIA, you know, the scheduled cycle.
(10:37):
Un h misses them, which Ihave to tell you it's not breaking my
heart. But who who could yousee maybe making a run from the outside
this year? Is there anyone that'skind of maybe lurking off the radar that
might be able to make some noise, if not win the whole thing.
Justin You're right about William and Mary. They're they're there. I think they
were. They should be everybody's numberfour choice going in. They took a
(10:58):
lot of beating with their fans andjust from nationally after they lost, you
know, by a decisive amount amountin the quarterfinals at Montana State. But
or if you have a running gameand a physical style deep in the trenches
and they were number three, youknow in rushing last year in the FCS
and most of their runners are back, uh Darius Wilson obviously you know at
(11:20):
quarterbacks of running style quarterback, Ithink they're definitive number four going in.
And yes, I mean their schedulesets up very nicely in the CIA.
They kind of avoid some of thekey players, you know, key teams
that is, so I think youhave to put them in the mix.
Holy Crosses seems like they return onveteran team every year. They did lose
(11:41):
a few this time. They maynot have that same record going into the
playoff. Last year they were undefeatedbecause they have two FBS games. Maybe
they win one, you know, get an FBS win for the third straight
year. Yeah, I think they'rein the mix, But I would put
the top four that we've mentioned.I think New Hampshire. They were a
number eleven in our stats Perform youknow, FCS preseason poll. I think
(12:05):
that's a little light. I thinkthey're a top ten team going in.
They have so much back. Ithink generally there's five or six teams that
have a legitimate chance to win itall, and then you have a nice
top ten that are very strong team. But with the Dakota is being so
good, South Dakota State, NorthDakota State, there's very few teams that
you can actually say they can navigateand win in Frisco. We're talking with
(12:28):
Craig Keiley from stats Perform FCS,the analyst dot Com pretty much the guru
when it comes to FCS football inthe US of A. So let's let's
talk a little bit about the CIAadded a new team yesterday. We're recording
this on Friday. We got actuallyhad dinner with Mike Murphy of UNH last
night. When I got home,I saw that Bryant was in the Coastal
Athletic Association for Football starting next year, or another on New England team.
(12:52):
The CIA is usually considered either oneA or one B when it comes to
FCS football. It's usual league slotsin in that one be spot. I
think nationally that's what people think whatthe league is. Uh. It's added
North Carolina A and T this year, Campbell, Uh, it's it's really
a fun league. Where do yousee you and H stacking up? Obviously,
(13:13):
I think most people think William andMary is the class of the league.
You and H maybe is one stepbelow that, But I'm of course
biased. I think we could givethem a game. But how do you
see the CIA stacking up this year? I do think William and Mary is
the favorite, as you mentioned justin, but I think New New Hampshire's,
you know, the second choice.I don't think their their schedule was that
ridiculous within the league. I thinkthey'll come out of non conference with with
(13:37):
a lot of momentum, maybe evenbeat Central Michigan. And you know,
I think you know that game atDelaware, which I believe is the opening
game for the CIA schedule, youknow, going to Rhode Island's tough,
but you know, I do thinkthey should. This is a team that
could be you know, nine andtwo going into the playoffs. I just
think they have that much back.So I think they're right there. I
(13:58):
think you know, there's about seventeams, eight teams maybe that have a
legitimate chance. I mean, obviouslyDelaware for a playoff bid. I do
think William and Mary maybe sweeps sweepsthe whole league, you know, Rhode
Island, Richmond, Delaware. Youknow, Villanova should be back in a
big way. I think, youknow, they really disappointed last year.
(14:18):
But you know, they're a verytalented program. Elon has been you know,
terrific at times, especially last year. If they get strong quarterback Plague,
you know this year that they'll havethe run game. So I think
it's a wide open, you knowleague after William and Mary as far as
going into it. I just thinkthat schedule for William Mary sets up nicely
(14:39):
as they as long as they stayhealthy healthy, they could probably go undefeated
in the league. Let's talk alittle bit, just for a moment about
some of the HBCU teams that weget to see. North Carolina Central in
Durham last year, and I thinkyou and H might have overlooked him because
they came into Durham and they puta good thumping on the Wildcats, which
you know, you and H endedup being a pretty darn good team.
(15:00):
Who do you see is the favoriteamong the HBCUs of course have the option
to playing and the celebration ball ifthey're one of the top teams or going
into the playoffs. I really likedNorth Carolina Central. I was glad they
when they when they they won lastyear. The celebration when they beat on
Sanders, that was that was fun. Who do you see being the class
of the hbc USED this year,Well, they had a great year North
(15:22):
North Carolina Essential and they have agood amount of stars back maybe about fourteen,
which is a lot going into theyear. That Davis Richard, who
you got to see a quarterback lashyear he can. He's so good.
He's dynamic. I mean he's alwaysrunning, you know for touchdowns, and
and he can throw the ball too. He's got size, you know.
Uh. They have a player ofthe Year on defense in their leg Baker.
(15:45):
There their cornerback, Khalil Baker. In fact, they're the only team
in the FCS that has the thethe offense on defensive conference players of the
year returning on their own on oneteam and to have no back is tremendous.
Those two h Richard and Baker.Yeah, I think they're the team
to be among HBCUs. Florida AMMhas not been able to get over that
(16:07):
hump with Jackson State. You know, Jackson State, you know, obviously
lost Dion as you mentioned, butthey also lost a ton of talent,
you know, transfers out. Someof them followed Dion Sanders to Colorado TC.
Taylor's are new coach, he's youknow, from within the system,
so they're gonna be very good. The swack seems to be whoever wins the
(16:29):
Florida A and M Jackson State game, which actually opens the schedule for Labor
Day weekend on a Sunday. Ithink Florida A and m can get it
done this time. They haven't thelast couple of years, so I think
they're the SWACK favorite, and thenthey'd play North Carolina Central in the Celebration
Bowl in the end. But again, the SWACK has a decent amount of
(16:51):
teams between Adding and Jackson State andAlcorns State Southern, So I think North
Carolina Central is definitely the favorite inthe MEAC, although Howard's a pretty good
team as well. Yeah, NicholsonBench, I think Howard has also joined
the the Hampton I'm sorry, Hamptonjoined the somebody teams and somebody at conference
(17:11):
realignments going on. Craig generally FBS, but a little bit FCS. It's
hard to keep track. Finally, before we let you go, can you
ever see a scenario where the IvyLeague schools decide they're going to enter the
playoffs? I mean, this isthis is like a debate every year.
You know, they start a fewweeks later than everybody else. Un H
plays Dartmouth this year, and it'salways a converse. I do some sports
(17:33):
for Darmouth as well, for youknow, basketball and soccer and all that.
Can you ever see a scenario wherethe Ivy league says, Okay,
we do playoffs in every other sport. We're gonna enter the FCS playoffs or
do you think that's just not onthe table. I think it's inevitable.
I think the people involved in footballin the IVY League are gonna wear down
the presidents. The presidents make thecall here and say they don't want the
(17:55):
student athletes to be playing a playoffgame adding zam time, but that happens
all the time, as you mentionedother sports. All the other sports go
to NCAA tournaments. I think Ithink the hidden factor over time is the
presidents want the season to end witha Harvard Yale kind of weekend. And
now some of the other rivalries areplaying that weekend, but Harvard Yale kind
(18:18):
of overwhelms everything that final weekend. They want the season to end right then
and there the spotlight, these hugecrowds. They don't want the champion going
off playing Thanksgiving weekend in front ofthree four thousand fans in a small venue
where the FCS struggles to get acrowd for that playoff weekend over Thanksgiving.
I think that's the reason, becausethere's really no other reason when the other
(18:42):
sports are sending their student athletes awayon trips during exam time. I think
they just want the season to endright then and there. Thanks with the
rivalry weekend, but everybody in footballin the IVY League wants to be playing
players, coaches. It's a soretime topic with them because yes, it's
it's been a long time. Everybodysays, this doesn't make sense. Yeah,
(19:03):
there's some IVY League presidents that wouldjust wish the athletics would go away.
There was some day I think wouldbe in favor of it. But
yeah, it'll be certainly interesting towatch down the road. Craig Keiley stats
Perform FCS the Analyst dot Com.Thanks so much for being on the show
and hopefully we can check it againduring the season. That would be great,
justin because you and h is gonnahave a tremendous season. Knocked them
Well, that's me knocking on wouldSo there you go. Thanks Craig for
(19:36):
us y are an over time comingto us from Mississippi. Today is a
twin c writing the CEO of BLOOPERDStrategy. I'll see it. Also a
CBS News contribute. Hint, how'sit going today? It's good Man in
the words of that modern day hiphop philosopher Drake what the time to be
alive? You know? But it'salways good. It's always good to be
(19:59):
in New Hampshire, you know it, Like for the last I don't know,
eight sevent eight years. Now,every day I'm like, well,
I can't get more ridiculous than this, right, And you would think I
want to learn my lesson by now, but I have not. And every
day there's something new that I justgo what and then I rattle off a
string of curse words, which you'retwo upstanding a gentleman to say, but
(20:19):
I am not. But the latestthing that really caught my eye. And
you, as a democratics tragist wholives in the South, has to deal
with this kind of foolishness all thetime. But Florida has apparently decided to
teach their children that there were somebenefits to enslave people from being enslaved.
Now, I thought to get yourperspective, you as a black man that
(20:41):
lives in the South that has todeal with it, Like I can have
my own opinions about it, butthey're not nearly as informed as unfortunately,
what you've had to go through.Edge. Do you feel your ancestors gained
anything from possibly being enslaved, becauseI feel like the answer is probably know.
Well, first of all, whenyou think about the bottom, there
is no bottom when it comes tothe right wing extremists who now hijacked the
(21:04):
Republican Party and are making multiple attemptsin all shapes and forms of sizes that
power graphing in this country. Thelatest was in Ohio, of course.
But when you think about what's goingon ecosystem wise, and you think about
Florida, somehow another there's this ideathat black people benefited from slavery. Well,
(21:26):
I'm thirty eight, first gen collegestudent on the second gen high school
graduate. Grandparents were sharecroppers. There'snothing about our bloody and painful history that
says that slavery somehow benefited our community. Black women were raped, black men
were forced to work under some ofthe most harsh conditions, treated like second
(21:49):
class citizens, lack of things likebasic access that we sometimes take for granted
today, like indoor plumbing, lackof access to food and water, in
many cases, separated from their families. And to be told, justin if
slavery is such a good thing andsuch a beneficial job training program, then
white in hell did more white peoplesign up for it? Right, you
(22:14):
would think with the way schools wouldbe intrigued in Republican dominated states, they
would be a slavery program now becauseyou learn all these skills. Right,
according to ron de Santis and thek and then the other part, it
act as if these black folks whomy blood flows through their those same veins
at some point in time, didnot come to this country with predeveloped skills
(22:36):
that they already need to have forsurvival. Right. And so when people
like when right wing white nationalists inthe form of governors like Rohn de Santas
and his disciples try to implement policiesas a direct result of the consequences of
elections, you have to remind yourselfhow important every single election is, up
(22:57):
and down the ballot. And asI always advocate for, the closer your
government is to you, the moreimportant it is for you. And they
don't just stop with the idea ofbenefit from slavery. They want a whitewash
history. They want to ban books, they want to suffocate our votes,
they want to take away critical decisionmaking opportunities for not just women, but
(23:21):
for people. And they want totell you that somehow another that it's okay
for folks to decide that a qualifiedantron U should run the risk of not
being able to admit it to collegejust because a qualified justin uh may not
look like a qualified antron. It'sabsolutely nuts. Uh. And it's a
(23:45):
friendly also a friendly reminding how thiscountry is teetering on the edge of repeating
a dark place in history that we'veseen once before. Yeah, there was
you know, when I was growingup, like, you know, things
were you know, we're not perfect, but I thought we all had a
common sense of like, okay,we uh you know, uh, slavery
was bad. Racism still exists, but we're slowly moving past it. We're
(24:10):
you know, a prejudice still exists. But for the most part, people
that ad that that advocate for thesetypes of things are shunned or looked down
upon. Not always, but mostof the time. Now we're at a
point where these people are are pullingthe levers of power. They're they're governors
of states, they're you know, their former presidents trying to become presidents again.
It's it's it's really an amazing timewhere like, like you said,
(24:33):
we're in danger of slipping, notjust a little backwards, but very far
backwards. I fear well, justinthe reality of that is, we once
thought that some of these things weredead, when really and truthfully they were
just buried on life support. Andnow they're starting to rear their head again,
but just re manicured in different ways. And so we have them in
(24:56):
the form of suppressive efforts when itcomes to legislation, we have them in
the when this place of rallying callsand cries like the insurrection on from January
six. We have them in theform of doctors, lawyers, politicians,
coaches, teachers, business owners,et cetera. And it's a scary thing
(25:18):
for us as black folks because sometimeswe're the ones who who give this country
the benefit of the doubt, andwe're sometimes the one that we have to
do a little more to get justa tad bit farther. And when things
happen that when America is experiencing asmoke scene, the black community experience in
(25:40):
wildfire. And I think if you'renot black, or if you don't have
the perspective of the African sea andthe American son and daughter. You'll never
have companionship with this idea of ourlife experiences talking about the right join us
here. If originally from South Garbaright now he's in Mississippi. I feel
like Bob I once said, whenwe when they go low, we go
(26:02):
high. And I understood what shewas saying when she said that. I
feel like there's been and I wantto get your perspective because you're much more
intrenched in the political scene. I'mjust kind of an observer and a commentator
and and uh, you know, joke teller for the most part. But
I mean, but but I feelDemocrats have done a little bit better job
lately of calling out you know, racism and bigoted policy and things like that
(26:26):
when they accord when they occur, rather than just saying that we're gonna set
the example and let let people seethat and try to live right. I
feel like, yeah, some ofthat's okay, but you also got to
call it out when you see it. And do you feel the Democratic Party
has done a better job of thatover the last year or so. Well,
I think people are just paying moreof a tent than to our responses.
(26:48):
The spit and the aroma of JimCrow, white supremacist, white nationalism
is still a very loud set thatlingers in the faces of black people for
every single day, every single stepalong the way. But what happens,
or what you're starting to see happennow, you're starting to see other communities
that don't look like ours. Seehow we are dressing this head on and
(27:11):
holding folks who don't look like usaccountable for their friends and neighbors and for
their actions and their deeds. UH. And so when I am so when
I'm so proud to see the Vicepresident go down to Florida, and I
would say a word but simply beatback at Rond de Saidez and his reckless
(27:34):
policies uh and his reckless Uh.I think opportunities to elevate racism, bigotry,
and hate. It's a proud momentwhen the keyboard thugs go online and
tweet what they want, to saywhat they want, and we have multiple
voices UH kind of batting those thingsaround with the Louisville slugger UH called out
keyboard. I think it matters. And so I think it's not only up
(27:56):
to us to push back and beatback on some of this stuff. But
I think Jessin. It takes you, It takes folks who look like you.
It takes those of us who don'thave our life experiences who literally say
this is not right. We've hadto do something about this, because that's
what the American experiment has always beenabout. This has been about a collective
effort of people coming together to addressthe needs and concerns of our collective community.
(28:22):
We're talking about Anchwine c right herein Antwine, i Hampshire. This
past week there was an effort toget some Preger University materials approved by the
state Board of Education. Frank edelBlue is the current Education Commissioner. He's
an extreme right wing and candidy thinkingabout running for governor in the next cycle.
The Chairman of the Board of Education, Drew Klein, also was advocating
(28:45):
heavily for Pragor University or prager you. It's a university, it's basically a
racist YouTube channel, but for prageryou materials to be used in New Hampshire
schools. There was enough of anoutrage about this so that the motion was
tabled to get the financial literacy programsfrom prager You not put into New Hampshire
curriculum. But this to me justseems like a trojan horse to get some
(29:07):
of these things into New Hampshire schools, which if you've seen Prager New materials,
I'm sure you're familiar with. Ifthe audience is it shows like cartoons
of Christopher Columbus saying slavery actually wasn'tthat bad, and cartoons Frederick Douglas kind
of you know, making, youknow, making it's seen like things weren't
so bad in the eighteen sixties andbefore that. So but I mean,
(29:29):
you know, not to disrespect differentstates, but you almost expect that in
states like like Arkansas, or Florida, or or or Mississippi. But in
New Hampshire we're like, whoa, what the hell is going on here?
I mean, we're gonna see stufflike this trying to be implemented in nation
mine, aren't we well? Andthat's the thing. Racism, bigotry,
hate and extremism has no boundaries, both geographical boundaries, and they have no
(29:53):
limits on what they would do inorder to accomplish their goal. That's why
I went Margaret Meat so eloquent. It said, never doubt that a small
group of thought will committed citizens canchange the world, because indeed it has.
That's why it's important for small groupsof thoughtful, intentional citizens to step
up and push back against its rightwing, foolishness, extremism, and every
(30:18):
which way they can, never communitythey can, so that we can indeed
change the chemical makeup of this country. Forget about the world, this country,
because we got to start in thiscountry. Because the racism, biggerture,
and hate finds legs and muscles, and then a skeletal system to exist.
The skin would come easy, andthat will then march all around this
country and before you know it willtake over this country. Let's let's talk
(30:41):
about something positive for a second, because I spend most of my time dealing
with what Babani Jones calls recreational sadness. I'd like to talk about something positive.
I feel like the about season iscoming. That's that's positive. Football
season is coming. Are you collegefootball sad? Because I can't remember who's
football saying? Well? I cheerfor all the South Carolina related teams.
(31:04):
Okay, so mainly Game Cox andClemson, but we have several other teams
from Wafford to Coastal to South CarolinaState to we have several college teams in
the state. They're cheerful. I'ma Carolina boy heart. That's hey,
you can't I can't hate on it. Wafford. I do radio for the
University of New Hampshire. I thinkthey they play Wofford or Furman when they're
(31:26):
in the playoffs. So hopefully we'llget a playoff trip down in her way.
Hopefully when it's cold appears so itcould be warmed down there. But
but no positivity wise, I thoughtit was good that the Biden administration has
started like posting signs, uh,you know, next to the efforts being
done by the infrastructure bill, becauseI think a lot of times Democrats do
(31:47):
a bad job of kind of pointingout the good things they do. They
just they they get stuff past andit's good, and they're like, all
right, let's look, let's moveon to the next thing, and things
like the infrastructure Bill isn't it isn'tsexy, It isn't you know, it
isn't a bumper sticker type thing, but it's something that really helps people.
So do you think that the Bidenadministration and Joe Biden's quest for reelection will
(32:08):
start to do more this kind ofpointing out like you know, hey,
hey, look at this here eightWell, I don't think this is the
bid administration. I think this.I don't think this is the Biden campaign.
I think this is the Biden administrationeducating the American people on how they're
going to get what they're going toget. Part of the challenge of the
(32:29):
disconnect is not that we don't havea message, and it's not. It's
just we have to message differently. The message differently may not mean showing up
on a TV screen, showing upon a radio program. Perhaps there's more
education saying that this road will befixed because of the bipartisan infrastructure law brought
to you by Joe Biden and CommaHarris, and so as I've been saying
(32:49):
for some time, I may havesaid on this program, at some point,
we've done legislation. Now it's educationand implementation. Because every single one
of the big six pieces of legislationthat have passed, and lord knows,
they've done so much more all thosethings. That two things to come at
one is that they all pull abovefifty percent among the American people. That's
(33:10):
Democrats, Republicans, independence, independentthinkers, and even those who don't always
participate. But two, there's nota constituency in this country who will not
benefit from those pieces of legislation. That means even the Republicans who did not
support it. And so if youare a member, if you are a
Republican member of Congress, you're ina red state, whatever you want to
describe it. And you ride downthe road that's been pot holed up for
(33:34):
all your life, or interstate that'sclogged up for the past three or four
years, and you see a bigsign saying brought to you by Biden Harris,
and you do a little quick searchwith your friend Google and see,
well, whether my member of Congressdo on this issue. You find out
what they can't do a damn thing. You have to ask yourself a serious
question of accountability when you go intovoting booth. So I think it's a
good education outreach effort for the administration. R H one c rights well poorly,
(34:00):
you go. H one. Igotta circle back to this because you
said you wrote for you root forSouth Carolina and Clemson. That usually doesn't
go well for the game cons Whodo you root for when those teams play
each other as they do every season? What do you do there? Do
you just you just kind of adjusting. I do the most important thing any
good sports fan can do when youare torn between two good teams that you
(34:22):
both care about, that you careabout both your root for the winner in
the end. Come on now,h one, c right, my man,
I hope I see you up heresoon. Uh and uh at best
of luck with what you're doing.Find him on CBS News doing all sorts
of stuff writing stuff for the Rootright, Well, I mean you're everywhere
where else you right for the Hilldot com. Well where else can we
(34:44):
find you? And now and nownews one. So I'm I'm I'm excited
to have an opportunity to share myvoice and share my thoughts uh in various
places and non traditional places. AndI'm certainly always overjoyed being your program adjusting
and I'm overjoyed. Have you.Thank you, my man, appreciate it.
Thank you both. Welcome back toover Time. I thanks to Antoine.
(35:12):
See right, you just heard thatsegment with him here on the show.
Antoine's a great guy and of coursenext to Craig Hailey who was on
the show in the earlier portion. We got a few minutes left here.
A few months ago, I hadI had my wife on the show because
my daughter had gone to Disney Worldfor a week with the Spaulding High Band
and Chorus and so, and myson was still at college. She was
(35:32):
a freshman year of college was lastyear. So we had a week of
being like empty nest years basically. And now we're in the home stretch before
both kids will be at college. Now one my daughter's gonna go to college
in New Hampshire, so she won'tbe too far away. But she doesn't
have a license because she's afraid todrive, which is a whole other you
know, the set of details. We've been trying to teach her to drive.
(35:53):
The process. We're getting there. But she won't be like in and
out of day, but she'll beclose enough we can go get her,
you know, if she wants tospend the weekend anyway. So she's going
away, Uh, the boys goingaway to college. So we are we're
about two weeks away from being likefull ass empty nesters. And it's you
(36:15):
know, it's a bit it's abitter sweet time. It's uh, you
know, kids are growing up.It's weird for and I've mentioned this before
it's it's weird for me because hey, I didn't go to college. Uh
so this is all like unchartered theground for me. Uh as far as
like helping them out with like signingthem up for loans. And by the
way, student loans, as it'sbeen covered everywhere else at nauseum, are
(36:37):
are a scam. But that's youknow, when you're working class folks sitting
your kid in college, and that'sthat's the way you gotta go. But
anyway, what was I saying,So it's you know, helping them out
with stuff like this. I didn'tgo through this experience myself. My wife
went to college, you know, twenty five years ago. How old she
scared? Yeah about twenty five, twenty six years ago or so. So
(36:58):
it's uh yeah, it's kind ofwild and and and and like in three
weeks, it's just gonna be me, Renee and the dog. And we're
starting to look at that really, like what do we do now? I
guess we're gonna get another dog isone of the things will do, because
the dogs become the replacement for thekids, right, I jokingly told Renee,
and like, why don't we getan el pack our backyard? Is
(37:19):
the size of a postage stamp. That's that's why that becomes funny. But
it's certainly gonna be an interesting timein our lives. And uh, when
you if you have kids right now, you know, like having if you're
raising kids right, and I thinkI've mentioned this in the program before.
If you're raising kids right, it'skind of like you're you're doing a doing
an eighteen year jail sentence, right, which is not to say you're in
(37:43):
jail, but you're you know, your life becomes a routine. You know,
the you know, September comes around, we go school shopping, they
go back to school. You know, Uh, they gotta week off in
February. They're gonna week off atApril. You're you know, oh,
this sports practice happens, this, this, these rehearsals happen. Now your
life kind of revolves around what you'rekids schedule is, even though you try
to have some sense of you know, being not just a taxi driver or
(38:07):
like, uh, you know, being a mom or dad. Isn't your
only the only part of your personality? I look, I guess for some
people it becomes that way, butyou try to you try to keep some
sense of yourself even while you're doingall these things for your kids because you
love your kids and you want toset them up for success. And then
one day it's like, all right, now, what do I do you
(38:27):
know? For for me, Ido all the sports broadcasting stuff for a
does all sorts of stuff with theCity of Rochester. As I said,
We're probably gonna have like eighteen dogsby the time I'm all said and done.
But you never stop transitioning from onemode to another. You go from
kid, teenager to adult, andthen you're an adult for a while and
you either have kids or you don't, but you know, depending on which
(38:50):
adventure you choose. There you kindof get into a routine one way or
another, and then when something changes, it could be a lot to deal
with. But I think if youface it head on and talking, what
I recommend is having a radio showwhere you can talk about it and it
becomes all of you listening become mytherapist. So that way I don't have
(39:10):
to go see an actual therapist andsaves me a little bit of money.
So I thank you all for that. Shifting gears real quick, we got
a couple of minutes left of theprogram, I am very, very excited
for this upcoming U and age footballseason. We're gonna be talking a lot
of un age football in the weeksto come. The season starts in when
this airs, it'll be three weeks. Opening game is at Stonehill College.
(39:31):
Stonehill was a Division two team forquite a few years. They made the
jump up to h FCS one DoubleA. I think last year was their
first year, or might have thelast year, might have been their second
year. But they used to playthe likes of Santing at some college of
Franklin Pierce, and they were verygood in that league. And now they
are in the n EC of FCSand UNH is playing there for their first
(39:52):
game on Saturday, September second.By the way, you can hear those
games right here on News Radio ninetysix seven and six ten. Well,
I've been sitting on some news.As far as a radio broadcast go for
your and H football, I don'tthink I have to sit on it much
longer. By next week, Ithink we'll be able to talk about it
on the show. But some veryexciting stuff for your boy here as far
(40:13):
as you and H football and theradio broadcast go. So we'll be talking
about that. But yeah, man, nine starters and offense, nine starters
on defense. I mean the lasttime I should say, though, the
last time I was just excited foryou and H football season was twenty eighteen.
They had just come off a prettydecent playoff run. My first year
doing the radio broadcast with Bob Liitmanwent to I Want a playoff game at
(40:37):
home again, Central Connecticut went onthe road and upset Central Arkansas despite a
quarterback injury in the first After TrevorKnight, that went to South Dakota State
and that's that's where it ended.But it was a nice run. A
U and H game back. Thenext year brought a lot of dudes back,
including quarterbacks Trevor Knight, and we'rein some polls. They were ranked
third in the nation and it wasthere was a lot of optimism, and
(41:00):
at Trevor Knight got hurt in thefirst quarter against Maine. They got killed
by Maine. Uh never got ontrack, ended up going four and seven
that year. So I'm very excitedfor this year's you Were and AGH squad
with all the dudes on offensive defenseback. But I also remember twenty eighteen
where we were all just as excitedand the wheels came off quick and I've
(41:21):
had this is I think this isseason number seven, seven or eight that
have been doing you and age footballgames in the radio. And the four
and seventh season was tough. Therewas at least some some wins and losses
in there. The highs are veryhigh, like it's a lot of fun
to broadcast a winning football team.Last year was awesome. The first year
I did the games was awesome. The year they went six and five,
(41:44):
that was a lot of fun too. There was some heartbreak there the year
they won six and five. Theyear coach back unfortunately was was sick and
Rick Santos had to take over, like last minute. That team was a
lot of fun, won a lotof games, should have won a couple
more. The year they started offthree, you know, and then lost
eight in a row. That isnot fun. It is not fun.
(42:04):
Breaking news not losing teams aren't fun, but it is. It is tough
to broadcast games for a team that'sin a skid like that. Dartmouth women's
basketball last year I did their gameson audio. It is kind of the
same thing. They lost like twentysomething games in a row. Man that
is a lot of what I dois a job, but it's not work.
That stuff could be work when theteam's just like not they don't have
(42:29):
it together, and you gotta likemake it sound compelling and not necessarily positive.
But you don't want to sound negativeeither because they're amateur athletes. That
could be work. But all thatbeing said, I'm very excited for this
year's You and eight football season, which kicks off in three weeks here on
the News Radio ninety six seven eightsixteen, also over on Fox Sports nine
(42:49):
thirty. All right, that's gonnado it thanks to my guess Greig Haley
and Antoine ce Right. We willcheck in with you guys next Saturday.
