(00:05):
Welcome to Overtime, the only radioshow to receive a Michelin Star, which
is weird because that's an award theygive to restaurants. But nonetheless, I'm
devastatingly handsome and humble. Host Justinmccisac. On today's program, I've is
in UNH Media Football Day or footballMedia Day, however you say it either
way. A bunch of the footballdudes where they're talking about the upcoming season,

(00:25):
and I talked to a whole bunchof them. We're gonna check in
and on the UNH football squad twoweeks from today. UNH kicks it off
at stone Hill. I could notbe more fired up for the upcoming season,
and we're gonna get you fired upfor it as well. We also
talk to you representative at Dave Lunoof the Hopton Bow area about the insanity
that was the prayer you stuff, and that's an issue that's continued because the

(00:49):
board of the State Board of Educationtabled this for a month. So in
about three weeks this is gonna comeup again, and I think they're hoping
everybody forgets about this. Well, guess what I may have had like four
or five concussions, but I don'tforget everything, just most thicks. So
we're gonna talk about this and whyit's important to keep a Prager you stuff

(01:11):
out of the New Hampshire public educationsystem. If you don't know who Dennis
Prager is, look him up andthen just just you you'll be face palming
for the rest of the day. This guy is a moron and creates his
content called uh. In my opinion, he's a moron. I don't know
if he's factually a moron. Iwant to say that that's that's my opinion,
just so just so libel and theslander laws don't get invoked here.

(01:33):
But I think I could probably proveit because he makes statements like January sixth
is a smokescreen, like the Nazisused the like stock fire. That's all
it is. So you say thingslike that, you know, I feel
safe in saying that you're an idiot. But anyway, that guy puts out
stuff that states like Florida have usedin their education system. New Hampshire U

(01:55):
State Board of Education is trying somethingsimilar. It got shot down last week,
I think mostly because people were like, hey, this is dumb and
put a spotlight on it. Sowe're gonna keep the spotlight on that to
make sure nobody forgets that this issomething that's trying to be slid under the
doorway here. But anyway, firstup, we're gonna talk to a whole
bunch of the un age players. We'll talk to coach Rick Santos, the

(02:17):
head coach the United football team.Get you fired up for un H football
season that's coming up. Next, you're on overtime, keep it here,
we'll go back to overtime and areyou ready for some football. As of
this morning, we are two weeksaway from your and H kicking it off.

(02:38):
They start off on the road atStonehill College, then go to Central
Michigan for their annual FBS game.First home game is September the sixteenth under
the lights against Dartmouth for the GrantedBowl Trophy, in a game that we'll
have some bad blood involved in.The two teams had kind of a half
of fracas last year after the gameended when un H shut out the big

(03:00):
up in Dartmouth last season. Youand H Media Day was this past week,
and I got a chance to talkto a whole bunch of the players
for this year's un age football teamand of course coach Santos as well.
In fact, let's start off withcoach Santos had a little scrum with some
of the media, talk to myself, also a public address announcer and Exeter
legend to Sherp Schester the Voyage ofGod Sherbchester. Roger Brown was in there

(03:23):
as well asking questions. So here'swhat it sounded like a media day with
coach Rick Santos. Coach Rick Santos, I was just talking to some of
the guys. Spotlight last year maybenot so bright, people sleeping on you
and h this year there's really nohide and how do you how do you
change the or is there a changementality coming into this season? Well,
the goal is to have it tobe the same, to make it about
ourselves, not our opponent. We'vetalked multiple times in camp it's it's me

(03:45):
versus me, not me versu you. And what I mean by that is
having our guys kind of strive tobe the best you and age football team
we could be and let all thereporters and the pundits and everybody kind of
telling us how good they are, kind of leave them out there. And
let's write our own story. Andreally it's up to this seniors and the
leaders of the organization right now toleave a lasting legacy on this program.
And we constantly talk about, youknow, the guys that have been here

(04:06):
for four or five years, someof them six years with COVID, like
it's your team now, kind ofhow do you want to define yourself?
And and I think those guys havedone a tremendous job during camp. You
know, we have a lot ofguys coming back, which is awesome.
It's been really competitive. Uh youknow, there hasn't been one day I
think where on one side of theball is completely dominated the entire day.
It kind of changes throughout the courseof practice where offense will have a really

(04:29):
good team period and then the defensewill come back and the next one and
vice versa. And I think they'rereally buying into teams as well. So
I'm excited about it. I mean, it's one thing to prove everybody wrong,
and we did that last year. It's a whole another thing to prove
everybody right. So you know,we can't we can't read the press clippings,
we can't listen to hell, everybody'stelling us how good we are.
We got to continue to go forward, and you know, for us,

(04:50):
it's just finishing camp the right wayand then obviously getting on the stone hill
and the opener. I'm just gonnaask you, biggest successful year at you
went into the quarterback? Yeah? And now is the head coach the development
of these quarterbacks that you have inthe system. Yeah, tell us about
how it's going along. It's sincei'd your tootla. It's a lot of

(05:11):
fun. And obviously it starts withwith Max Brosmer and have the ability to
have him when I was coaching quarterbacksas a true freshman, uh, you
know, and he was the firsttrue freshman ever to to get playing time.
We've had a handful of a redshirt freshman, but he played early
in his career. It was atestament to him and how he prepares.
And now kind of watching him growthrough our system transition, you know,
between new offensive coordinators, we changedsome verbiage and we used to be you

(05:33):
know, all up tempo would spreadand shotgun and wide open, and we
were a lot more pro style lastyear and we're actually even going to kind
of expand upon that this year.Give him a lot more flexibility at the
line of scrimmage to do some chechome stuff and put us in the perfect
call. And he has aspirations toplay in the NFL and he has the
mental IQ for that. He studiesthe game. So we're gonna we're gonna

(05:56):
empower him to do a lot moreat the line of scrimmager, which is
going to be good. It's beenexciting seeing kind of the maturation process of
him. And he's got some playmakersaround and that make him better. But
I think he leads by example. He's everything you want in a quarterback,
and I think those is one thingabout being talented at that position, which
you need to be to be successful. But I think if you can really
have a guy where there everybody elsein the locker room kind of looks at

(06:17):
him, knows he's a leader, they buy into him, they believe in
him, that's when something special couldtruly happen. And that's what we hope
to happen this year. Absolutely right. We talked about when a little bit
in the fall from the spring,Yeah, what's it like to have him?
Now? What's he mean to theteam in the secondary And was there
ever a concern that you didn't haveroom for him. Was that ever a

(06:38):
problem or interest? No. Ithink when he you know, originally thought
he had kind of done everything heneeded to do. Obviously, in his
mind he was going to leave ontop with a championship, and you know,
came in here as a walk on, earn a full scholarship. He
just a lot of the different thingsthat he was going to measure his career
in terms of being successful. Hedid that last year, so it made
sense why he wanted to walk away, and we always wanted to back.

(07:00):
So when we got that call halfwaythrough spring, was elated. It was
very happy, and some of theguys, the younger guys were really doing
a good job stepping up during spring. So we told him, hey,
listen, like you know, you'restill gonna have to come back and earn
it. You know, we're notgonna we're not gonna hand deliver anybody's spot.
He didn't bock at that. Hesaid, listen, I'm gonna go.
I just want an opportunity to competeand go get that job. And
he was confident in his ability thathe was going to win it, and

(07:23):
he hasn't missed a beat. Heactually came back. You know, he's
bigger, faster, stronger. Eventhough he wasn't enrolled in school, he
would sit down and you know,he would still kind of log in with
some of his teammates, log inand look at film and prepare and do
all those things as he was here. So it was a testament to him
that he realized, Hey, Ididn't want to miss out on my last
year of eligibility. And now Ithink, you know, him and and

(07:45):
Oxyden are gonna be an incredible onetwo punch. And I think our defensive
backfields as deep as as we've beenin a long long time, and expect
expect Joe to have a huge, huge impact on that defense this year.
But about a two and a halfweeks till the first game. Who's surprised
you in a good way at campso far? This? Uh, I
guess it's not spring, it's summer, So it was surprised you, I

(08:05):
guess, yeah. I mean, obviously they're the handful of stable guys that
we're going to talk talk about thatbase some impact last year and you guys
can kind of figure out who theyare. But some newcomers, I think
Logan Thomlinson the transfer wide up fromWesleyan's the tremendous jobs he's earned our respectives
coaches, and he's our starting X, our boundary receiver right now, So
we'll kind of move Corkrant to thefield. And those guys are kind of

(08:26):
interchangeable. They can both play acts, they can both play Z. But
he's someone that's really stepped up.Big, strong, hands, great at
the point of attack. He's physicalin the run game, very cerebral,
smart player. So coming into anew system with a lot of verbiage in
it, he picked it up ratherquickly. So excited for him. Another
New Hampshire native. I think, you know, we're talking about Joey Eickman,
but I think Kolbe Gramshaw someone that'sreally impressed us. You know,

(08:50):
he put on twenty five pounds andmuscle this offseason. He was someone who
we felt like showed flashes last year. He just he simply needed to get
strong enough. He's got a greatframe, He's dedicated himself in the weight
room. He's an elite worker. He wants to be great, you know,
he just has that that will abouthim. So he's somebody that's gonna
go in in those twelve personnel setsand contribute early. So we're really excited

(09:11):
about him, you know, onthe defensive side of the ball, really
excited to get Zach Aaron Bacco anduh, you know, everybody talks about
the two All American dms, andrightfully so and Flex Reeves and Josiah Silver,
but I think Garon is going togive us, you know, the
ability to be very multiple. Youknow, he's gonna be somebody early in
the season that teams aren't really goingto have a game plan on. He

(09:31):
hasn't played in a few years,so he's twitched up. He can rush
the passer. He's somebody on thirddown, you know, in some of
our packages where we're gonna get alittle bit lighter when we want to rush
the pass or He's definitely something that'sgonna be in there and he's gonna have
an impact for us. So reallyexcited about him. And then Brandon Perkins.
I think some at the second levelhas done a really good job.
You know, Bryce Shaw obviously andRyan to Scottoll the last couple of years

(09:54):
have been awesome. Brandon Perkins isreally turning heads and he's making it hard
for us to not put him onthe field right now, So really impressed
with his development as well. Roger, how about Peyton Strickland the way talked
to him, He like the injuriesand whatnot. He he was a little
behind. Yeah, you know,I had to play catch up for sure.
Where he had now is his lastthree practice where the best he's looked

(10:16):
since he's been at you And huh, it's it's been one thing after another.
I feel so bad for him,and I'll give him credit. He
stayed positive through some adversities, hada couple of nagging injuries, you know,
and he came back in great shapeafter winter break, but he had
a little you know, a skiingor snowboarding injury that kind of hampered him
a little bit and he wasn't fullgoing spring practice. He put that all

(10:37):
by the wayside, had a reallygood summer training regiment that we had there
with the team, and then youknow, he came in again. It's
just you have to take those repsto kind of get comfortable. And I
think obviously you guys understand like thisthis level, you know, it's vastly
quicker than a Hampshire high school fotball. So I think it was just a
little bit of a culture shock forhim and kind of how hard you need
to work to get on the field. But I give him credit me up.

(11:00):
He kept pushing through and the lastthree or four practices he went out
there. He caught a touchdown ina live situation yesterday in the red zone.
It was all out pressure, quarterbackdrifted off his back foot and you
know, he jumped up and madean unbelievable catch show athletically, it's a
no brainer. We're gonna have tofind creative ways to get him the ball
because I think matched up against outsidelinebackers and safeties and he's somebody where it's
going to be advantageous for our offenseif we get a match up in the

(11:22):
right situation. So definitely someone who'sa huge line up In the last couple
of weeks. I want to piggybackoff that. Yeah, you get some
new Hampshire talent on the team.Schoolboy camps are started. Now you get
sophomores. We'll put it at thesophomore level, trying to make it to
the varsity level. Yeah, yeah, and someday maybe make it right here
yea wildcast, right, what's someadvice as a coach yeah, that those

(11:43):
guys that are listening to this potbroadcast. Yeah, well, first and
foremost, I think work to bethe best leader you can possibly our new
team. We want to recruit highcharacter young men. So we love to
recruit captains. We love to recruitguys that are leaders in our organisation.
I mean, obviously you have tothere's a certain level of demarcation in terms
of how talented you need to be. But after we watch the tape and

(12:05):
we say, okay, this kidis good enough athletically, the first thing
we're doing is calling the high schoolcoaches and and Gotten's college was everybody in
the area that will talk to usand kind of what makes this young man
tech? What's he all about? So that that's first and foremost, kind
of work to be the best leaderyou can be. And then yeah,
then I think it's just you getso overwhelmed sometimes about kind of focusing on

(12:26):
all the external stuff. Just becomethe best possible football player you can be,
and you know, work to bean all state, all area type
kid. And I think that's whatwe want. We'd love to keep the
top talent in New Hampshire in Durhamevery single year that that's part of our
recruiting philosophy. Who've done a reallygood job in the last couple of years
and we hopefully to continue to dothat. Also got a chance to talk
with Max ox and Died, veterandefensive back for the un H Wildcats.

(12:48):
Well, I almost didn't recognize henormally has his hair giant, he has
his hair braids. At media day, I was like, who's the new
guy? We're a number one,and I realized it was Ox. Barely
recognized it. But I got tochance to talk to Max about beat a
sixth year senior, what that's likeand what do he thinks of the upcoming
season for your an H here inMax ox and Dying of the un H

(13:09):
Wildcats and ox Uh, I askedsome of the other guys this last year,
people kind of sleeping on the Wildcats. There's no sleeping on the Cats
this year. How do you approachthe season knowing the spotlight's kind of on
you? Guys? To be honest, the same way we approached it last
year. We don't really look atthe rankings. That's not really important because
it just depends on what you're doingthe field, like when the game time
comes so going into the season justlike we were last year. I mean

(13:33):
last year we were ranked I thinkninth preseason, this year second. So
the same mentality, we just goout there every Saturday and do what we
do. Was there is there abitter taste from how this season entity even
though it was a conference championship. Some of the guys said, you know,
still thinking about that loss to holyCross even though it was almost a
year ago. Do you do youstill think about that or you there is

(13:54):
it a clean slate this year foryou? No way, it's a play
slate. I cannot wait to seeholy Cross again. I know we're gonna
see them again down the road, and I just can't wait for it.
It didn't end the way I wantedto last year, so we're definitely excited
to see them again. You guyshave done the program has done a really
good job of keeping guys, uh, you know, from transferred. It's
like a transfer portal world. Now, why do you why do you think

(14:15):
this is Why do you think guysstick around and Durham. It's not it's
not a big city. It's notlike you know, bright lights or any
of that. But the guys seemto stick around here. Why do you
think that is? I think it'sjust like we're a family. Man.
I know my class. I'm asix year now. So the class that
I came in with, we havea lot of the guys that are that
I came with that are still here. And we're just still here because,

(14:37):
uh, we were all on thesame recruiting visit together. Actually, like
we all came in like Ohs,Dylan, Charles, me, a lot
of us were all on the sameexact visit and we all committed that day.
So it was just like we justdecided to stick together. Finished when
we started. So you got youmentioned Charles's He played one game I think
last year, one or two gamesin the in the secondary, and I

(14:58):
think he's defensive back this year.Well, how's he doing back there?
What do you what do you expectfrom him this season? Charles is a
jack of all trades man. Heplayed really well with wide receiver for a
few years. Then he has beendominating special teams. He had a block
last year a touchdown, uh blockreturned for a touchdown as well. And

(15:18):
now he's a defensive back and heactually led the spring in interceptions. So
we're looking for Charles to definitely getsome time at dB this year as well,
and we think he'll fit in perfectly. You're a six year guy,
so you're not as old as me, but you're getting up there in years,
right, not not not the eighteenyear old buck that came out of
high school, right, But howdo you how do you keep yourself right

(15:39):
in the off season? Do youjust is there like a regiment you follow
or are you just what are youdoing in the off season to get right?
It's not the same as it waswhen I was eighteen, for sure.
When you're forty five, Yeah right. I come in now and I
stretch before and after every practice orwork out, just because, like you
gotta stay ahead of that stuff whenyou get older. And when I was

(16:00):
team, it was no stretching.I just went out there and I can
run all day. So definitely justmaintaining and just staying ahead. So we
call that prehab here, so that'slike what I take. I've been profen
before I go golfing. Prehab right, yeah, yeah, exactly, yep.
How excited are you to get tohit someone in another jersey? It's
you got two and a half weekstill Stone Hill. You guys have been

(16:21):
working hard in cam How excited areyou? Man? I cannot wait the
ones. We don't really get alot of live reps, so we don't
get a lot of opportunities to reallytackle or hitting me one before we get
into game weeks. So just everyrep that we get, we're taking those
and we're really going as if they'regame reps and just sticking to it just
so we can be ready for stoneHill week one. Ox thanks loll I

(16:45):
appreciate it. Thank you. Bythe way, how quality of the nick
name is ox? I know it'shis last name ox and died, but
still if people called me Ox,I'd feel really good about myself or at
least better. Anyway, coming up, we will talk to you more of
the UNH players from media day.Got a chance to sit down with a
pair of defensive ends who terrorize opposingquarterbacks. You'll hear from them and a
few of the other players as well. It's coming up next here on overtime.

(17:07):
Keep it here, Welcome back toovertime. Got a chance to go
to a media day for you anda football this past week. Got a
chance to catch up with some ofthe players. Been a few practices,
but you know they're busy at practice. They're practicing doing stuff. Don't really

(17:27):
get a chance to sit down andshoot the breeze with them about the upcoming
season. More about absorbing what's goingon. And I will tell you I
think I said this last week.Watch him practice. Everybody's kind of doing
the same thing where they don't wantto say it too loudly, but they're
kind of looking at each other likedamn. This team might be real good
and a big part of that willbe two of the defensive ends. The

(17:48):
two starting defensive ends, Dylan Ruizit goes by flex and Josiah Silver.
Those guys are an absolute terror onopposing quarterbacks running backs you day. But
I sat down with the pair ofthem at un H media day talk about
the upcoming season and whether or notwe can give a nickname for the defensive
line for UNH. All right herewith Josiah and Silver and Dylan and Ruiz

(18:08):
of the UNH Wildcats and coming upa couple of weeks first game of the
season. Josiah, how about howexcited are you? I'm finally excited I
to bounce back from this Holy Crossl I moved to a different, different
focus. Now move on this stoneHill. Finally get to play football,
this spoint that we all love.Just get back to the grind of a

(18:29):
long season. What about you,Dylan, how excited are you for the
coming season. I'm pretty excited. The schedule this year is we got some
good competition these upcoming weeks. Youknow, we got stone Hill, so
we're prepping up for that. Afterwe finished camp and Josiah, you talked
about the Holy Cross, you guys, is that you know, is that
the focus? You know, bouncingback from the l even though that was

(18:51):
what I was back like Thanksgiving weekend, right, But is that still in
your mind? I wouldn't say it'slike a bouncing back, but like really
that's the last time that all ofus played football, so it's like that's
still in the back of our mindsof like, yeah, like that's how
I season ended last year. Andit's like, I like, we don't
take it as a loss because likein life, you don't really lose.
Everything is like a lesson. Sowe're just trying to have that game teach

(19:12):
us lessons of how we should preparefor like this upcoming season. And it's
just like just things like that,Like I wouldn't even mentioned it just because
like that's the last time we allplayed football and that we're excited to get
back to it. All right,Dylan, what's the what's the toughest part
of camp? I know it's agrind. I've been out of practice a
few times. I know you guyswork hard and try to have fun with

(19:33):
it, but it seems like it'sa grind. But what's the toughest part
for you? I want to saythe toughest part is after practice, you
know, and you go to lunchor you get treatment, you kind of
mellow down and you're you're tired, and then some some like offense might have
left and you know, you don'treally get that nap in, and the
defense might have left so they won'tget the nap in. So I think

(19:55):
after practice, just that a fewcouple of hours where you have meetings and
lift it's the toughest part, Okay, Josiah. You know last year before
the season, a lot of peopleare sleeping on the Wildcats. You know,
I think it was picked ninth inthe in the CIA. Uh.
Great year last year ended up withthe you know it splitting the conference title.
This year, there's there's no hidingright from the media spotlight. So

(20:18):
what is the mentality different coming intothe year like this when the Wildcats might
have a target on their back.I say, it's very different. So
last year were trying to put ournames back on the map. This year
we're just trying to keep our crown. So like coach Coach Antos has the
same, We're hungry but humble, like so it's being like, yeah,
like we're not We're not going toprove anyone wrong this year. We have

(20:40):
to prove everyone right this year.So like I mean pick second. To
me, I feel like we shouldhave been picked first, but that's just
our mindset. But now we justgot approved why we're the number one team
in this year. So it's likethings like that. We're humble, but
we're hungry at the same time becauselike we haven't achieved our goals yet.
So it's a different mindset, butstill we have the same outgoes. What

(21:02):
about you dealing. I mean, like you know, last year, you
know, everybody you know sleeping onthe Wildcats a bit. This year,
you know picked in the some polesat top ten, some poles at top
fifteen. You guys in particular geta lot of focus because you had such
great seasons last year. How isthe mindset different this year coming into this
season? So the way I thinkabout it is I kind of just like
take a step back and reset everything. You know, last year we want

(21:25):
to ring. My name was kindof brought out in the spotlight, but
that don't matter to me no more. I kind of already forgot about it.
So every time I go into anew season, I just have the
mindset like I want to prove somethingand like make my mom a proud or
something. So that's how I gointo every season. All right, just
say what do you What do youguys do the offseason to kind of like
reset? Do you like, doyou just try to chill? Do you

(21:47):
do you do you work even harder? Do you just like try to reset
your mind? What do you doin the off season and to kind of
kind of get yourself ready for thecoming season. So for me, it's
it's hard. It's hard for meto really say a reset because I'm I'm
a big film guy and I'm mybiggest I'm my biggest critique, So like,
if I think I messed up likelike this past season, I feel

(22:08):
like I could have I left alot on the table, like I was
badling injuries, like I put inmy groin, Like I'm my biggest critique.
So like this whole offseason I've beenwatching I probably don't watch every game,
probably ten times, watch so manygames like film to see like what
I could have done differently, whatshould I have done here? Things like
that. So my mind isn't reallya recess, really a refocus of like

(22:33):
trying to make sure I could likeways I can improve, So like I
work hard. Luke cares old,I knew defensive line coach. He was
really with us like me and doingall summer and like his expertise of like
telling us different techniques and things likethat. It's like that helped me shape
my off season. So it's likeit's just a read. I might trying

(22:55):
to just get better as a playerevery day. What about you telling you
do anything in the off season toreset or you like Jo Sorry, you're
just eating tape the whole time, just not chilling out at all. I'm
not exactly like Joe Sigh, youknow, he watches more film than me,
But I definitely get I definitely geton the field, so it's not
really just chill him this summer.Me and him, we kind of stayed
up here all year. I didn'treally go home, Like we both to

(23:18):
like a week or two to gohome, because you know, everybody really
needs that, but we was uphere just grinding. All right. Just
sorry, do you guys listen?I feel like you guys need a nickname
on a defensive line. All right? Maybe maybe if the whole defensive line,
maybe just the two of you guys, can we can we workshop this?
Can we get Murph on that orsomebody to get you guys a nickname?
I definitely agree, we definitely needa nickname. And then just for

(23:41):
the audience, I need people tostart putting more respect on my man flex
his name. Like all these preseasonpolls, like all Americanists and him not
being on one of these top Forcetop four teams. I just think that's
like really disrespectful because like the yearhe had, Like I think me and
him are the best, we're thebest two dns in the country, but

(24:02):
we have to go prove it.But I just feel like the disrespect with
the preseason is just I think it'scrazy and we're gonna shock the world this
year dealing. He stays humbled. But do you bust his shops walking around
calling him mister all American and stufflike that, or how do you handle
it? I kind of tease hima lot. You know, he's he's
he's really knowing around campus. Notin a bad way, but like you
know, he's the face of Uand A. So I'll just go around,

(24:26):
you know, tease him. Butit's well deserved. You know,
he worked hard for it, soyou know, I definitely I never had
a lot of catching up to do, and I think I still do have
a lot of catching up to doto be on the same level as him.
You dan here, it used tobe mister un H. Now,
Josia Silver, this's mister un H. Would you say, yeah, as
Joe Joe Reckless all day? Allright, thanks guys. Oh oh oh,
we got one more comment, onemore volley? What do we got?

(24:48):
Mister U and H is definitely doinga lobby. He's come on,
he scores touchdowns. You know, offensive players get way more loved than defensive
players. So daling lobbies, misterun H, if you ask any one
of us, you gotta get somedefensive touchdowns this year then right, you
right? I need I need flexto get a strip sack. I need
to recovery getting the end zone whenwe celebrate together, all right, hopefully
we're gonna make it happen. Nicecat, I ain't gonna lie. Josiah

(25:11):
Silver might be my favorite kid onthe team, And there's a lot of
candidates, because there's a lot ofgood kids on this team that are that
are funny and smart and thoughtful.Josiah, I don't know, I don't
It switches from minute to minute, but Josiah's right up there. Dillar Ruiz
as well. He's a little moreserious, uh and understated than Josiah,
but he is a wrecking crew overon defensive end as well. The two

(25:33):
of them together on the same line, Oh look out, defensive line is
going to be doing some work thisseason. Got a chance to talking with
the Wildcats center O Show Ohma Yanniabout the difference in the approach to this
season. Last season, the Wildcatsreally weren't expected to do a whole lot.
Had a great year this year, ranked to the top fifteen and most

(25:53):
FCS poles and pick second in thec A A talked to oshow about what
that meant to Yeah, way,in my eyes, it's just the next
one. Just instead of having anextra motivation, revenge tour, whatever you
wanted to call it, this year, it's about avoiding complacency, you know
what I'm saying in the estimate anybody, which was pretty easy for us last

(26:15):
year. But we still got allthe confidence in the world. It's just
basically the same team, just alittle bit more refined, and it's just
about going weeks a week, takingit day by day and and just getting
better that way. I think it'sfour starters returning on the offensive line this
season. How important is that? That continuity where you know you're the you're
the center, so you're doing alot of the communication. How important is

(26:36):
that for you? Yeah, it'sit's we got a bunch of the same
guys just moved around, but theroom as deep as a whole. It's
really easy to lead those guys.Between me and Oni and DP, we
got three like basically seniors within thegroup, and then we got a bunch
of people who who know and havefallen in line for a couple of years.
So now it's just like, youknow what I'm saying it's a it's

(26:57):
a very veteran team, is Santosays. But I think my room especially,
we got a super super good thinggoing on chemistry wise, not only
just with the five starters four starterscoming back, but just within the whole
two deep those ten guys. Youknow what I'm saying, you can plug
and play anybody with anybody, andit's gonna be like, you know what

(27:17):
I'm saying, as close as theycome. Yep, what's the what's the
tough start of camp for you?I know it's a grind, but what's
the toughest part for you personally ofcamp? I would say the toughest part
for camp. Let me say somethinggood. Truthfully. I would say,
like, the toughest part for campfor me is just, you know what

(27:38):
I'm saying, stand up with yourbody. You know what I'm saying.
As I get older and stuff likethat, and you re injure the same
injuries, it's like it kind ofjust speeds up your aging process. So
you know what I'm saying. Youfeel good for a couple of days and
then you go to sleep and wakeup there next day and you're like,
oh my god, I fitting god, treat me yesterday Will forty five and
picking up the mail hurts. Yeah, you feel me. So it's like
that would say, honestly, likeand that's whatever old man thing to say,

(28:02):
but to be truthful, it tothat. You know what I'm saying,
because you get a whatever, anew little nick which I mean is
gonna come and camp for anybody. But then it's like, as an older
guy, you got all this otherstuff that you were dealing with. So
as you shift your focus to thatnew thing and forget about the old things,
the old things now become the newthings again, and it's like a
cycle you can't get out of.Yeah, it doesn't that now now.
Like I said, picking up themail hurts me. But getting out of

(28:25):
bed sometimes I'm like, in mytwenty two or are my fifty right?
Who's who's surprised you in camp?So far? This year? Surprised me
in camp? Okay, let megive two shout outs. I'll give two
shout outs to some freshmen and thenI'll shout out somebody who's being here.
So my first shout out goes totwo nine, my man Denzel, he

(28:47):
played running back. I just thinkhe one of those guys who The one
thing I say to my line allthe time is just trying not to make
the same mistake twice. And youknow what I'm saying, I feel like
he epitomizes that, like I'll goout there, he could play next play,
mess something up, come back tothat the next day. It's two
good plays in all. You knowwhat I'm saying, And that's what you
like to see. And as anold lineman, I like the fact that

(29:08):
him got a problem stepping in thereand sitting on a block, you know
what I'm saying. And then asfar as the other freshman is in my
room, it's Luke Swayne Man Schwayo. That's my that's my young bull right
now. He got a shot tobe really good, and he got a
shot to be real good right now. So we just try and get him
up to speed, to try toget him in the mix a little bit.

(29:29):
But yeah, I got a lotof love for that dude. He
puts in a lot of work andhe shows up ready to work every day,
which is what I love. Andthen my two players that are being
here that are six nine, myman Mason Davis. He continues to surprise
me. Man, he just getsbetter and better every day. It's like
every period I see him, hegets better. He's a stud and he's
someone to look out for and thenshout out, tell my man, nay

(29:49):
good bro number twenty one bro.Coach Scott says it all the time whenever
he flashes on tape. But he'slike the perfect example of just putting your
head down and going to work anddoing stuff the right way. And I'll
say this thing that, like myroommates and anybody who I feel like it's
going through something, I just say, stay down until you come up.
And I feel like Googli epitomizes that, you know what I'm saying. He

(30:10):
wasn't trying to rush his you knowwhat I'm saying, his blessings and nothing
like that. You just keep yourhead down and keep working and you gotta
trust that good things is coming youaway. And he's bawling, Oh,
appreciate you good luck this season.Appreciate that, man. It's always a
blessing. By the way, forthose of you that don't hang out with
college football players all the time, you don't realize how not big you are
until you're around the starting center forthe you and age Wildcats these are big

(30:33):
dudes. I know, I knowI called kids because like they're the same
age as my kids. But theseare big dudes. And another big dude,
Kyle Upkowski, tight end for yourh Wildcats get a lot of preseason
recognition as well. Talk to Kyleabout this upcoming season. All right,
Kyle Upkowski is here tight end forthe Wildcats. And I asked all the
other guys this, I'll ask youtoo that last year people were sleeping on

(30:53):
you and Hick ninth in the conference. This year, you know, eleventh
in the country and some poles secondin the conferences. Is the mentality different
coming into this season? I don'tthink so. I think the guys we
have, we have a veteran group. Priorities are the same, I mean,
expectations are the same. We thethree and eight season I think was
a fluke and I think we're areally good season team that we've don't want

(31:15):
to win a lot of games. And you got some some preseason recognition yourself,
I mean, what is that likewhen you see your name pop up
in like those those preseason you know, All American or preseason All Conference or
what is that like? And doyou just try to ignore that or do
you do? You embrace it?I mean the preseason for a reason.
You know, you got to proveit during the season, and it's always

(31:36):
nice to see that, but youknow, you can't listen to it too
much. You can't listen to thegood stuff, can't listen to the bad
stuff. You gotta just stack oneday on top of the other, and
you know, you just gotta dowhat you're supposed to do, do your
job, and the wrest will fallinto place. I don't training camps at
grind. What's what's the toughest partfor you? You know, getting through
these weeks, you know, withthe regular season on the horizon, what's
the toughest part? You know,I've learned to love it, you know,

(31:59):
like anything else. Freshman year wasdefinitely a lot tougher because I didn't
know anybody up here, but thegroup of guys we got here, like
you know, everybody messes in thelocker room, and I think it makes
it really easy, you guys.I mean, with the practice the way
it's structured now, I think wedo a good job to take care of
our bodies. But you know, some of those practice could get a little
hot. The rain comes down andmakes a little harder catch. So we

(32:21):
just gotta keep keep focusing on whatwe need to do and we'll keep pounding
away. You know, it's kindof a college football world where guys have
one big year and then they're inthe portal. They're going somebody else.
That doesn't seem to happen at youand h one, why do you think
that is? You know, Ithink it's a group of guys. I
mean we have we have probably twentyplayers that could have gone last year,
and you know, we saw whatwe could do last year, and we
knew we could do better. Soif we just banded together and kept kept

(32:45):
this program where it is now andjust keep climbing, I mean, sky's
the limit. You know, we'regoing for the national championship this year.
So and how excited are you justsee a different colored jersey on the other
side on September second, rather thangetting hit by your own guys, are
hitting your own guys in practice.Yeah, you know that. It's always
refreshing because you gotta go hit yourguys out on the field and then you
come back in the locker room andthey're your best friends. So they've been

(33:07):
they've been keeping us on our toesthe defenses. You know, we're historically
known for our defense, so theydo a great job changing the looks and
making us really work and as anoffense. So I will be excited to
get on the other side of theball with a couple of guys. But
Klavkowski, thanks lit Man, thankyou very much. All Right there you
having some of my conversations with someof the un h Wildcats from this past
week at media day. Got moreovertime coming up next, keep it here,

(33:40):
turning me today on overtime. Heis a representative in New Hampshire House
representing Hopton and Bow also the rankingmember on the House Education Committee. Yeah,
Representative Dave Ludo joins us. Dave, how you doing, Hey great,
delighted to be with you today justinthanks so much. Yeah, I
appreciate it. And uh, lastweek I talked a little bit about this,

(34:04):
just kind of ranting on my own. So I figured I'd get somebody
that knows something about these issues onthe show for a little bit. Not
that I know nothing, but Iknow next to nothing. So it's always
nice to hear informed voice. ButI had huge concerns with the State Board
of Education trying to push through uhsome uh some programs from prager You,
which is it's I hesitated to callit a program. It's more like a

(34:27):
in my opinion, it's more likea racist YouTube channel. But but the
issue was tabled by the state Boardof Education. There is going to be
uh personal financial materials I guess usedand the whole rest of prager you stuff
seems to be wildly problematic. Asas someone who decides the laws and for

(34:49):
our state on these things, whatwas your view and what do you think
is going to happen in the futurewith this? Yeah, no thanks,
thanks jump And this is this isreally really a hot stock right now.
But it's and it's really timely sincesince it was you know, the the
I mean, it's really it's reallyoutrageous. The Commissioner of Education really tried
to slip this in to a youknow, sleepy meeting in the middle of

(35:12):
August in two hours notice, youknow, hopefully slided and well nobody's nobody's
looking. But people are all overthe state are watching this stuff. And
and when we see stuff like prageryou, and I don't even know what
the use stands for. I thinkthey probably try to pretend that it's Prager
University, but you know it's nota university. In fact, it's not.

(35:36):
It's got nothing to do with meditation, you know, I think you
you teed it upright. I meanit's about written, you know, mostly
racist propaganda, and you know they'renot accredited, they're not a school lithing
like that, and their videos rangefrom I would say, misinformation and garbage
all the way through through to youknow, really racist propagation and and just

(36:00):
the idea that that you know,Commissioner ed edel Blood would would find this
this type of information to be tobe appropriate for for public rules in New
Hampshire, public school students in NewHampshire. It's just it's just outrageous.
Yeah, I think you you hiton an appoint an important point there.

(36:22):
This is kind of slipped in tothe agenda, you know after uh,
you know, summer breaking happened formost schools, so maybe a lot of
teachers were on you know, vacation, not paying attention to beting schedule for
August. If you're anything like me, August is just like yeah, I'm
gonna go to work, but mymind's not really going to be there.
Most people in August just kind oftrying water, so really kind of trying

(36:42):
to slip this, uh underneath thedoor jam, and you know, Frank
edel Blue kind of pushed this through. We also saw Drew Klein, I
think it's the chair of the EducationCommission and Full Disclosure is a talk show
host on on a station that's notthis one. But he was really beating
the drum, really kind of keepingup for this thing. And then I
think the public outrage kind of forcedthe the tabling and a vote for next

(37:06):
month. It's something I hope doesn'tleave people's uh, you know, the
front of their mind because this isreally wild. This stuff could be pushed
here in New Hampshire. Yeah, yeah, And and you know that's uh,
that's you know edil Blood's m ohere and and you know he's tried
to do this before. Uh he'syou know, he's done it in the
House Education Committee by you know, pushing proposals to to cut things like industrial

(37:30):
arts and language and theater and musicfrom from public schools across the state.
And he wants to you know subin uh this this garbage and racist propaganda
from from places like a Praguer youand you know, I know I'm probably
over using the word outrageous here, but you know, another another thing to

(37:51):
really be be you know, extremelyconcerned about is is you know the state
board there Drew Klein said, allright, well we'll table it because we
actually want to learn a little bitmore prager about how they're going to isolate

(38:13):
uh certain curriculum like fprinal financial Literacy, which is the starting point of all
this from their other you know, you know, you know, blocks of
this propaganda and just the concept ofthat like, hey, you know what
it's okay for the State of NewHampshire to be doing business with with racist
propaganda bills is just it's just incredible. And you know, I don't think

(38:37):
that's what what what granted staters thinkabout when you know, when they're paying
taxes for them to operate their publicschools, that that that their schools are
going to be you know, pushingyou know, this type of of a
propaganda to their you know, totheir to their kids. We're New Hampshire

(39:00):
representative representing a bow in the Hoptonarea. Yeah. The metaphor I use
was like if you went to arestaurant and the back of the restaurant was
filled with vermin and rats and whatnot. You're like, you know what,
that's that's not great, But we'rejust gonna go to the bar. I'm
sure the bar is fine because that'sdifferent than the rest of the restaurants.
Like, no, the whole theplace is infested. What are you doing?

(39:20):
But that's you know, maybe I'ma simpleton. That's that's just how
I see it. But what what'sbeing done? Or can there are there
things that can be done in thehouse to kind of stymy this or is
this just a board of education? If they want it, they're going to
vote for it, and that's there'snothing much people can do. What can
be done moving forward? Yeah, that's a that's a great question, and
you know, I think you know, that's what we're looking at right now.

(39:44):
Are are some things that that couldbe done to assure that that that
there's quality educational programs offered in publicschools and that's always been the been the
standard in New Hampshire because curriculum andinstruction is basically left up to locally elected
school boards, which obviously have superintendenceworking with them, and you know,

(40:08):
teaching faculty and and uh, andpeople that know what they're doing. But
but you know, it's it's abundantlyclear that that's around the state Board of
Education, including the commissioner, don'thave a don't have a clue about quality
of public schools and curriculum. Uh, certainly things that are appropriate for for

(40:30):
students and the expectation that we havehere in New Hampshire. So you know,
I would I would say for toall granted staters when you know we're
coming obviously into into an election year, but make sure you know where your
candidates stand on this stuff. AndI think a simple, you know question

(40:50):
is where do you stand on Prager? You and do you think prager your
curriculum belongs in our public schools?Yeah, And for those who don't know
who Dennis Prager is, he's basicallya talk show ho And if you if
you want to go ahead and throwthem into your Google machine, you'll see
some wild stuff. He said, for example, January six is a smokescreen
like the Nazis used the right stockfire. That's all it is. Things
like that. So if that's theguy you want to decide your your kids

(41:15):
education, I don't know what totell you. But for the rest of
us. I think we just gotto make our voices heard and and make
sure the State Board of Education knowsthis is not acceptable, right right,
right, right, So we go, We've got to we've got to keep
that, keep that up. Youknow, I haven't seen the agenda yet
for next month's state you know, school board meeting, whether they're going to

(41:37):
have this on the agenda and considerit. But but uh, definitely keep
the keep the energy up against thiscut of stuff because this is this is
really not the New Hampshire way ofdoing anything. Certainly actually not the way
for to be teaching our kids inpublic schools. And and you know,

(42:00):
and I want to put a shoutout to justin too, you know,
all of our school board members andpublic schools and teaching faculty and support or
daff and and administers around the statebecause they just they do a great job.
And and you know, New Hampshirehas a great reputation nationally when it
comes to public schools and student outcomes. We're among the best tops in the

(42:21):
country on that. And uh,and that's saying a lot to given the
lack of state funding for public schools, so to be able to as well
as we do means that our localproperty taxpayers are open up their wallets and
say, hey, you know what, I'm going to pay this, but
I expect strong outcomes and that's whatwe're delivering. But the state needs to

(42:47):
to step up. It's it's financialsupport for our public schools, particularly the
ones that have the hardest time, you know, financially lost. My good
friends are public school teachers in theRochester school system, and uh, a
lot of people who might have thewrong idea about teaching and what teaching entails.

(43:08):
I would struggle last ten minutes doingthe job they do. It's a
it's a difficult job. They're notdoing it to get rich. Uh certainly,
I can tell you because I haveto pick up the check half the
time with them. But it's certainlya rewarding profession for those who go into
it. And uh yeah, wegotta do some more more to support our
public school teachers and administrators. Well, Dave, I appreciate you checking in

(43:29):
on this, and hopefully we cancheck in again into the future and keep
us updated on this. That'd begreat. Would love love to join you
anytime justin reach out and and Ihope, I hope all of your listeners
enjoy the rest of the summer andschool will be starting soon. Indeed,
Rep. Dave Luno from the Bohaktonarea joining us here on overtime. Thanks

(43:51):
all right, we're just about runningout of show, but thanks to all
my guests, all the un agefootball players that spent like a whole lot
of time in mediating. It's awhole day and I don't think it's their
favorite thing, but they're very generousfor their time, the coaches and players,
so big shout out to the unedge football team. Also to Dave
Luno, representative from the Hopton Bowarea for checking in on the Prague or
you calamity that is still ongoing.Remember it. We were just fourteen days

(44:15):
away from UNH football season kicking off. College football kicks off next week Week
zero. We'll see you next week. Don't forget kids. Hippies are bad
people pretending to be good. Punksare good people pretending to be bad.
I'll catch you later.
