(00:07):
Welcome to Overtime, the only showI voted most improved player in Major League
Baseball in nineteen eighty seven. Youcan look that up. I'm devastatingly handsome
and humble host just Becauisen. What'sa day's edition of Overtime. We're gonna
talk to you with Sama Californ Defectordot Com wrote a really good piece about
Deon Sanders and how he's changing collegefootball or already has changed, in how

(00:28):
college football might be revolving around him, at least at the FBS level.
Also going to check in with awhole bunch of UNH football stuff. As
as you hear this, I amin Michigan getting ready for UNH at Central
Michigan. As longtime listeners of theprogram, No, we record the whole
thing beforehand, which is why I'mable to be in Michigan, and so'll

(00:49):
talk to you through the radio throughthe magic of technology. So this week
got to talk to a few ofthe players and coaches for UNH football.
Started off talking to coach Randall JetYou're gonna hear this at halftime of the
game. So if you tune into the game later on, if it's
halftime, you feel like you're hearinga rerun kind of you are. But
Randall Jet coaches the defensive backs forU and H football. He played football

(01:11):
a U Masks in college. Alsohad a cup of coffee with the Green
Bay Packers. So I talked tocoach Jet about what it's like being a
coach and I'm making the transition fromplayer to coach and all that stuff.
So why don't we take a listento that? Right off the bat,
here's coach Randall Jet. So whatthe folks listen to? Know? What?
What do you do with with thecoaching staff. I was hired in

(01:33):
February. I'm the cornerbacks coach. So Casey DeAndre was previously that we had
a good rapport prior to me cominghere. We spoke, we met,
and Kary Gilley though would be agood fit if I joined, And you
know, Casey moved over to thesafeties. And that's kind of how it
came about. You played your footballat U mass If I recall correctly,
you got a U Masks, wasn'tplaying Unah at the time. You were

(01:53):
FBS, right, correct, Somy my redshirt freshman year was the last
year. That's twenty eleven was thelast year of the Colonial class, which
I wasn't a part of a redshirt, but yeah, that would be
the last year. So there's nobad blood coming in it, right,
No, But I know put putSantos and them they see it differently.
But yeah, for me, youknow, it's all love for me.
Yeah, that's that's hard to findaway for coach Santos and them. But

(02:15):
so, what's the biggest transition fromplayer to coach? You you had to
stand with the Green Bay Packers. You played a very high level at you
mask what's the toughest transition going tobe at a player to being a coach?
Uh? The basics fundamental teaching, you know, understanding that you can't
just show everything. You got toactually teach and talk it out and and
you got to be a fundamentalist. So it's it's easy to be like just

(02:36):
watch this, but then when you'reolder and thirty and you can't do it,
you gotta you gotta rely on youknow, words and teaching. So
I don't know, I come froma teaching background as well. You know,
my mom she's teaching, So youknow, you just got to really
make sure they understand like you understandand they don't know it. It doesn't
matter how much I know. Rightwhat point did you decide coaching was around
you wanted to go down? Iwould? I mean I tried it out.

(02:59):
You know, I had to graduate, so I got cut in sixteen.
I had to finish a course. So I went back and helped out
with coach Whipple. You know,I liked it, didn't love it.
I still wanted to play a littlelonger, So you know, I did
a couple of workouts with a coupleof different teams, and then I got
into med device sales, and Iwas coaching high school ball at Sabarian and
I was just leaning more towards thecoaching side. So I res out to

(03:21):
all the coaches I had and said, hey, I would like to be
a college coach like you guys were. And obviously there's steps to it,
and you know, it finally gotme here. So you're you're one of
the probably one of the young coachingstaff, but you were one of the
younger guys in the staff. Ithink, do they do you still show
the players that you got moves outthere? Or do they do they try
to see what you got left inthe tank? Or I mean, I
wear cleats by trying not to doanything past fifty percent. And I tell

(03:44):
them that, like I wear cleatsjust for me my safety, but I
don't try and do anything over fiftypercent. The Mike Murphy Achilles injury has
rocked everybody's world in NH. Ican see did you did you ever play
the head Coach video game when youwere coming out to do you see yourself
as a head coach? I'm yeah, that would be my ultimate goal.
And you know I sat down withCoach Santos and I expressed that, and
I wouldn't they came here if thatwasn't you know, if I didn't want

(04:08):
to learn from him and everything likethat. So you know, I do
my research on every opportunity I mayhave, and this was this was a
great fit for that. And youknow, especially with this culture, even
coach McDonald who recruited me and everythinglike that. So I know what New
Hampshire is and the program being fromMartha's vineors, so you know, this
is a good spot. I'm happywhere I'm at now, learning the fundamentals
as a position coach and everything thatworking under Coach Gillick, so down the

(04:30):
line. Yes, yes, Ido see that. So it's good to
learn from Coach Santos. And ourfinal question, do you feel that when
when you showed up and teamed upwith the coach boarding and won the cornhole
tournament, do you feel that gaveyou instant credibility with the rest of the
staff. It was. It wasgreat. Yeah, I'm talking staff wide,
it was. It was awesome. But I you know, I I'm
humble, but you know from theviney so I knew that was gonna be
a win many of each days playingcourt hole, so it's tough to be

(04:55):
humble, right, Yeah, yeah, I was in the beginning, but
once I won, everybody knew Iwin. Coach Jet, thanks for doing
this, Thank you, Thank youfor having me. Now this you're gonna
hear or the pregame show of theUNH football game. This is a really
interesting dude. I actually only hada few minutes with Nate Kapongo, but
really would like to spend a littlebit more time learning about his story.

(05:16):
Nate Copongo is defensive linen for theUNH Wildcats. Moved from the Democratic Republic
of the Congo to Westbrook, Maineas a sophomore in high school and then
learned English, learned how to playAmerican football, and suddenly he is like
one of the most important pieces onthe defense of a team that maybe headed
to big things in FCS football thisyear. Uh is a Division one football

(05:41):
team, you know, one DoubleA they used to call it. Now
they call it FCS. I thinkthey've been calling it FCS for like fifteen
years now, but everybody still callsit one double around here. So anyway,
the point is this, the dudenever watched or watched some clips of
football, never played American football, moved to a completely different continent, had
to learn a whole new land, which I had to learn how to play
this game. And he's on aDivision one football team and he's a pretty

(06:02):
damn good football player. So uhyeah, I'd like to hear more about
his story at some point. Buthere's what you're gonna hear in the pregame
show today with Nick Capago, defensivelineman for the Wildcats. I stall sophomore
year high school was more of alearning because I was learning English, so
I learned both kind of the sametimes. But yeah, what you you

(06:26):
come to us from Maine? Wherewere you before? Made? And what
I'm original film did the r C. The Congo moved to Maine in twenty
sixteen. So and what was thatlike? Because Maine New Hampshire, the
weather here when you first get here, I mean I lived in my whole
life. The weather's not great, especially in the winter. So what was
that like for you? Well, but definitely not fund was not really fall.

(06:46):
The weather and especially man is verycold. So I really I struggled
a little bit with that. I'vebeen here forty five years. I tell
my wife, we are not doingthis in like ten years. So I
can't imagine how you felt. Thatwas crazy. That was crazy. Yeah,
he gotta embracest. What sports didyou play growing up? Soccer and
basketball? Yeah, it's not notreally American football much. Hu never had

(07:08):
you seen it on TV or anythingor a couple highlight? I only heard
about Tom Brady and kem Ya.And what was your best sport? Soccer
or or basketball? Soccer? Yeah? What did you play? I play
I played like midsfielder okay, yeah, and my favorite player was well not
NDO and Christanna will Now they're growingup so kind of like to play like

(07:30):
that. I can only imagine somepoor forward seeing you in the middle just
waiting to you know, with astout tackle, you must to terrorize some
dudes. Yeah, but I wasnot as heavy at him now I was.
I was like, um, eightyfive. I get a lot of
ways since then. All Right,So what's uh when you moved to me?
What's the what's the uh the partabout living in the States you'd like
the best since you moved here?Uh? Literally everything, I enjoyed every

(07:56):
moment of it. I'm very gratefulfor it. But everything else was pretty
pretty interesting. Yeah, it's anew culture, so I gotta learn it
in embracing. Yeah, what wasthe weirdest thing to learn when you were
learning how to play American football?Uh? This stance? I didn't know.
I understand anything they're talking about.Three stands to sixtens. I was

(08:18):
lost. I was lost soft forth. My coach Jim Marman really stock and
really helped me too to kind ofget it together. What's uh? Do
you have a pregame playlist and what'son it? I listened to literally everything.
I listened to E EDM to rapto afrobeats, So it's literally just

(08:41):
depending on my mood. No countrymusic, right, I don't like country
music. Last Night that's a littleI don't know if you guys know the
Last Night? But is that aband or a song? It's a song
by who's a singer? Again,I have no idea. I don't know,
but it's it's a pretty good song. A lot of people know it.
People tell me they like country music, and I'm like, I don't
know. It doesn't deal for me. That's probably the only one song that
I listened to. But yeah, who who would you say is your funniest

(09:05):
teammate? Uh? Iron or Isaac? Okay? Isaac? See? Yes?
What's they just sell jokes? Theyjust bust on people. How how
they funny? Well? Iron toa lot of jokes. Isaac is small
funny like dancing and just messing around. Okay like that? So, uh

(09:26):
do you play video games a lot? A lot? What's your video game?
Cut off duty? Call of Dirty? Who's the best Call of Duty
player on the team? Is ityou? M? Noah Stansberry? Okay,
it's pretty good. Is he likejust camping out waiting for guys?
Or is he a sniper? Whatdoes he do? Uh? He's a
you like you like to rush?So like he's just moving fast. That's

(09:48):
my style as well. So okay, just like on the field, the
two you're just moving fast and beingsmooth, right yep, make make it,
make it fast. But everything's juston the go, all right,
Naker Pongo, thanks for doing this, man, Thank you, thank you.
So you got Nick Capago a reallyinteresting kid, really nice kid too,
a really huge kid. So wecome back. I got more you
age football stuff. We'll check inwith Rick Santos his weekly press conference this

(10:09):
week. Also check in with HeronMorrisso, one of the wide receivers.
You caught a sixty nine yard touchdownbomb in last week's game. You'll get
you a little bit more ready foryou and H Football. Also gonna talk
with us samra Caliph of Defector dotcom. And I'm gonna rant about some
stuff later on in the program aswell. How's that for a big market
tease. All that's coming up hereon overtime, keep it here, Welcome

(10:35):
back to overtime. Getting ready forthe un H Central Michigan football game.
I'm your host, just in theshop. It's the game. We'll kick
off. At what time we're kickingoff? One thirty. We're on the
air and at one pm for ThePretty Game Show. Cam Beale is my
tag kee partner this week and alsothis week checked in with un H head

(10:56):
coach Rick Santos Une taken on CentralMichigan. You may recognize the name of
the quarterback of the Central Michigan chipplewasif you're an old head like me,
yeah, you're familiar with the BurtEmmanual rule. Burnamanuel played wide receiver for
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among otherteams. The Burn Emmanuel rule came into
effect after the Buccaneers kind of gotscrewed in the NFC Championship game against the

(11:18):
then Saint Louis Rams. Burn Emmanuelwas called for a fumble on a catchy
looked like he had completed the ballhad touched the ground, but he had
possession of it, but a fumbleor it was called incomplete. I probably
should have looked this up for theshow, right, but you know how
our role regardless, the rule waschanged so that the ball could touch the
ground if you had possession, itwould still be complete, and it was

(11:39):
thus known as the Burt Immanual rule. Well. Burn Emmanuel Junior plays quarterback
for the Central Michigan Chippawas, whichI have to say too, they're probably
zero NFL players listening to the show, but on the off chance there are.
When you name your son who goeson to play college or pro football

(12:00):
all your name junior, like BertaMaydeville Junior, Asante Samuel Junior, it
makes me feel old. It makesme feel very old, and I don't
appreciate it, And so do allyou NFL players or future NFL players.
If you plan on having a child, and you plan on having a child
play at the NFL, come upwith a different name, because when it's
h your name junior, I feelold. And that's you know that,

(12:24):
really the entire universe revolves around me. So I would I would appreciate that
that consideration. But anyway, thepoint is this. I asked coach Rick
Santo's about bert and made Wild Juniorand what he brings to the table as
far as a quarterback for the CentralMichigan ship was. Here's what he said.
Yeah, he's a dynamic athlete,you know, a duelthreit. Guy's
got a strong arm, can kindof throw it all over. But I
think they like to to run him. They like their design. QB runs.

(12:46):
When you turned on the game againstMichigan State, you know, that
was a very close, hard foughtgame up until halftime. I think it
was about three points with under acouple of minutes left. They scored and
then Michigan State pulled the way.But five or six times he scrambled in
that game burna Manuel did where theyyou know, the defense had him dead
to rights and he found a wayto kind of evade them and go.

(13:09):
And I think in those unscripted playsthat are always tough, you know,
so we have to have a gameplan. We're going to spy him,
do different things creatively to put anet around him. But at the end
of the day, he's a dynamicathlete, so certainly have to be really
good with our run fits, ourgap integrity, no exactly who's going to
be responsible for him on every singleplay. And yeah, I mean they're

(13:30):
they're explosive offense. I got astable of running backs as well. They're
big upfront, you know, physicallyimposing offensive line. So I think stopping
the run is going to be It'sgonna be huge for us work to get
him in obvious passing situations. Ilike our matchups out wide. I think
our guys, you know, havea good opportunity to to cover some of
these guys, you know, sowe got to make sure that he can't
beat us with his legs. Alsochecked in with coach says about the number

(13:52):
of penalties you and h Chad lastweek, which was a lot. It
was fifteen penalties. I think approximatelya million yards of penalt least, which
you could kind of get away withwhen you end up winning fifty one to
seventeen. But if you're in closegames and you're taking a ton of penalties,
that's that's none ideal. Brian Espinett, who was in the booth,
would me last week, said youactually want to get a few penalties out

(14:13):
of the way of the first gameto kind of get that out of your
system. I could buy that forWarner two. Well, when it got
to fifteen penalties, I kind ofwas giving them the side eye on this.
So I asked coach Shantos what hethought about the number of penalties and
how he addressed that with the teamthis week and all that sort of stuff.
And he takes a nice little shotat Espo in the beginning there,
which is fun. Maybe that's becauseBryan was used to get in some fifteen
years themselves. No, I meanit's a fine line where we wanted to

(14:39):
match their intensity. We knew frompregame warm ups they were chirping a little
bit. Our guys were chirping alittle bit. We felt like that was
going to be a pretty kind ofhighly contested game, and it was contentious,
it was chippy, It certainly wasall that. So I worked hard
to try to get them into themoment pre game and try to be disciplined.
But obviously that message didn't get throughto them. So I think that's

(15:01):
that's something that we're going to battleevery single week because I want our guys
to be relentless. I want usto be gritty. I want to have
an edge about us and a demeanorabout us. You know, we say
play to the echo of the whistle, so that's right up into it,
you know, till it blows. But hopefully we got to be the point
where the agitators and then the otherteam gets you know, they're the ones
that throw the first punch and geta fifteen year of penalty against us.
So it's that fine line, andI got to do a better job of

(15:22):
making sure that those guys understand it'sunacceptable. It's going to lose us games
in close games. So uh,for us to continue to do this thing
and play at a high level. And as this goes along, we're playing
against really championship caliber teams and wehave to win these games late. Those
hidden yards are huge and we can'thave those silly penalties. Yeah, so
lots of penalties not good. Playingup to the echo of the whistle,

(15:45):
that is good. I think thatwas the message the players got this week
from coach Santos. Al lessels Isthe press conference as well the UNH Insider.
He asked coach Santos about, youknow, the opportunity to play against
an FBS team. Last year,UNH kind of came out of the gate
tight. I lost to Western Michigan, not Central Michigan, trying to get
all the Directional Michigan's in, uh, you know, within a certain amount
of time here. But I lostto Western Michigan forty four seven. If

(16:08):
you look at the scory like Iwas a blowout. Your age got behind,
but they kind of played well afterthat once they got too far behind
for it to matter. But coachSantos, who when he was a quarterback
for the Wildcats beat a bunch ofthese FBS teams as quarterback. Of you
and H talked about the opportunity theWildcats have taking on an FBS squad like

(16:30):
Central Michigan the Rutgers was kind ofneat, I think, just the first
opportunity to really start and to play, and didn't realize kind of how big
of the magnitude of that game wasthem winning a top twenty five game beforehand,
so that was a lot of fun. And then you know, maybe
maybe senior year as well against againstMarshall, just because we knew that was
our last our offer for the seniors. We weren't as explosive that year without

(16:55):
Dave and some of the other guysthat had left. So you know,
we played put a pretty pretty allI thought first half, you know,
offensively in that game, and thenthey came back, but we found a
way to kind of hold on toit. So those two, those two
stick into it, and I thinkthat's hopefully I can kind of pull from
that and get to the guys thisweek is like, you know, I
don't want to look backwards, butat the same time, we just had
a ton of fun with it.You know, everybody expects us to lose,

(17:18):
and that's a great place to be, right, You can play free.
And this isn't a make or breakgame by any any stretch of the
imagination for what we want to getaccomplished for the season. Right, So
it's just for us to be nationallyrecognized to go out there, and if
we beat these guys, you know, everybody's gonna know exactly kind of what
it took to go into it.And you know, I think I looked
at the stats, so think rightnow through week one, FBS is forty

(17:41):
two, FCS is zero. Solaw of averages is saying it's gonna come
back to the mean, and it'sgonna come back to the middle, right
there. So some FCS teams aregonna win this weekend. Why not us?
Why not us? Indeed, youand h and Central Michigan later on
on these fine stations. Also thepress conference was hard also cut that sixty
nine yard bomb for a Max Brosmerin the last game against stone Hill College.

(18:06):
Morrisso played for Yukon before he cameto UNAH, so he has some
FBS experience and somebody the press conferenceasked him you know, what are the
big differences play at the FBS levelcompared to the FCS level. And here's
what heron had to say. Whatcomparing FBS and FCS. Mainly upfront is
the main major difference in terms ofheight and skill. In terms of secondary

(18:29):
it's it's I would say the skillguys is around the same, but up
front for sure in the trenches, that's where things definitely become to be like
a chess match in terms of howathletic can you move at three thirty or
whatever. You know, if you'replaying the align and you're specifically going against
somebody on the offensive end, justseeing really how athletic they can be at

(18:51):
the size that they're at. That'sthe main difference. For the most part,
games a little bit faster. Alsoon the FBS level, asked Horn
as a wide out, everybody wideout thinks they're open at all times and
every wide that wants the ball atevery play. And last week Max Bros
were completed passes to eleven different receiversin the win over stone Hill. So

(19:11):
I asked Moro, so caught twopasses and I don't think anybody caught more
than three passes last week, Iwas looking at the stats and it was
pretty amazing. Everybody had kind ofthe same amount of catches, and everybody
almost except for Harad who had thesixty nine yard touchdown and another catch as
well for not as long of agame. But except for Mori, so
who I think at the most yardsreceiving, everybody kind of the same number

(19:32):
of yards received. It was reallyit was kind of eerie the way the
stat sheet kind of shook out.But anyway, I asked more so what
it does for him as a receiverwhen there's eleven different dudes that can make
catches and in fact, five differentguys caught touchdown passes last week. For
you and h how he feels aboutthat as a wide out personally in the
way I see it, If Ieat, we all eat, and vice
parsa. So if Logan Thomason getsa catch over the top, then I

(19:56):
got a catch over at the top. And that's exactly the brand of football
that we play here, especially inthat wide receiver room. We're very,
very very tight. As you said, there's many options to go in many
different directions. But if eight scores, if nineteen scores, I scored as
well, and I think as ateam that's what we do as well.
I'm sure when you see one ofus score, you see the whole sidelineline

(20:18):
up and it's something that we're allgenuinely happy about. So that's how I
would There you go. Good stufffrom Rod Morris, very thoughtful, dude,
and of course coach Rick Santos asyou get a lot of NH content
here on this week's edition of Overtime. Coming up next, we're gonna talk
to Sarah Califf of Defector dot Com. He wrote a piece about Dion Sanders
and what the college football landscape lookslike at the FBS level with coach Prime,

(20:45):
as he's called, kind of dominatingthe narrative last week. I have
a lot of thoughts about coach Prime, but not all of the because a
lot of them are conflicting, andI think that's what a lot of people
are going to be thinking and feelingas Deon Sanders kind of starts to take
over the call football landscape. Butwe'll get into that with Samer, who
writes for Defector dot com. He'sinto Hampshire, dude. He's coming up
next here on over time. Keepit here. Trying to me today on

(21:14):
overtime from Defector dot com is samor klop to New Hampshire, born and
brand now in New York City, but doing great stuff for Defector. How
you doing, Sammer? Great? How are you good? Good? And
uh? You write a whole bunchof stuff for Defector. The piece that
calm I eye this week because I'muh, I'm hip deep in college football
stuff was on Deon Sanders and youknow, for weeks and weeks and weeks

(21:38):
Fox was kind of tuning that firstgame Colorado gains TCU. You wouldn't even
know Colorado had any players. Itwas. It was Deon taking on TCU
all by himself, which he seemedto be out of eligibility. That's a
that's a different story, but itwas an interesting way to hyper college football
game. I really mentioned aname onthe place for Colorado, but it seemed

(21:59):
to have warred. And now Ihave like several wildly conflicting feelings about this
whole thing. But for those thathaven't read a good could you kind of
surmise what you what you said inthe piece a little bit? Sure?
Yeah, So I wrote the pieceafter Colorado had upset TCU on the road

(22:19):
and you could tell that the reactionthat week and was kind of like everybody
was really thrilled to see Dion kindof takedown. It was kind of presented
as this thing where Dion was kindof like breaking college football in a way.
And to me, I'm not likeyou. I do have like a
bunch of conflicting opinions on Deon Sanders, but I don't know. To me,

(22:45):
just knowing how he exited Jackson's Stateand kind of knowing how he put
the Colorado program together, it didn'tseem to me that he was all that
different from any other college football coach. He was only kind of challenging an
institutional mindset and college football. ButI don't necessarily think that he's using completely

(23:08):
innovative tools as he's doing yet.Yeah, it's kind of kind of just
dressing it up different rights. Yeah, we haven't seen we haven't seen an
NFL player that was, you know, a Hall of Fame NFL player go
to coaching and having this kind ofimmediate success, I like you did at
Jackson State and then moving on towhen I was a even before as a

(23:33):
teenager, Colorado was a marquee programand like, in my head, they
still aren't, even though they've kindof been asked the last few years.
But uh, you know, likewhat in my head is still a marquee
program and the Pack two I guessnow, But yeah, it's it's just
kind of a different way to seeall this happen. But yeah, you're
right, it's kind of the samesort of stuff. Although bringing all those
guys from the from Jackson State froman HBCU specifically, you've seen guys go

(23:56):
from FCS teams to FBS college footballteam but not really like a whole horde
of HBCU dudes joining up on oneprogram. That's true. And he did
have Travis Hunter, who is alegitimate prospect in his own right. He
was He's like a two way playerright now. He's a receiver and defensive
back. And also Dion brought hissons, one of whom is the quarterback

(24:22):
and he had a great game,so he does have some talent. And
it's definitely I guess to give alittle more context, Colorado is like the
worst in the Pac twelve last yearthey won one game, so he did
there was there was a reason tobring in new players because clearly the players
that the Buffalo has had were notworking. It's just I think to me,

(24:44):
the kind of interesting point in theseason will be, maybe not this
season, but maybe at the endof the season will be when Deon Sanders
has to deal with players who arestars and not necessarily just like happy to
be playing for Deon Sanders, butlike start NFL draft ready in their own
right. Basically, yeah, it'suh. And for those that are kind

(25:07):
of like just paying attention to football, like you know this week because the
NFL started, and maybe especially inNew Hampshire like me growing up didn't watch
a ton of college football. Ithink that's changed over the years. You
know, New England's always been yougrew up in New Hampshire, you know,
it's like a pro sports area. But so people are just diving into
college football. Colorado was supposed toget waxed by TC and they didn't,

(25:27):
and Deon was really in his feelingsafter the game, and I think rightly
so because a lot of people weresaying how badly they were going to get
beaten. It kind of went afterEdwarder for no reason to say do you
believe? And you bet the tweetin this story and Edward's like in what
you know, so I do peopleare surprised, I think by how Deon

(25:49):
Sanders is acting, But I thinkyou can only be surprised if you didn't
watch one minute of Deon Sanders NFLcareer, Like this is how he was
as a player. It's just Ithink it's kind of weird to see a
coach to it, right, Yeah, Yeah, It's definitely something that I
guess, especially in college football, people don't expect from coaches like it's a
it's a big deal when like NickSaban or Dabo Sweeney like dabs of his

(26:10):
players after they went like a titlegame basically, and outside of that,
they're kind of reserved and trying tokeep all of their secrets basically because anything's
an advantage. And then you haveDean Sanders, who, Yeah, his
NFL career was like that, hisanalyst career was like that. His Jackson
State career was also like that. He's just like that's who he is,
basically, and it's uh, Iguess it's it's shocking for college football,

(26:33):
and I understand why I could beseen as like something new. Right,
We're talking to the samakalofava defector dotcom as a story there's a bunch of
stories on defector, but the oneon Jon Sanders specifically we're talking about today.
So my conflicting feelings kind of basicallyboiled down to this, like I
don't like it when coaches kind oftake all the credit for things, uh,

(26:57):
you know, at any level, like the players are the ones that
ultimately have to go out and playthe game. But also the way Dion
is doing this is upsetting the worstpeople in the world, and that really
makes me happy. So how doI kind of how do I gotta reconcile

(27:17):
these two opposing feeling Sammer, Yeah, I'm in the same situation. Like,
for example, Colorado is going tobe playing Nebraska, and it would
be very funny to see Matt Rule, who's the former failed Carolina Panthers coach,
just be humiliated by this guy whojust came in. And it's like
two games into a season, right, But it's yeah, it's a tough

(27:37):
I don't know. I don't thinkit's like a thing where I'm not going
to root for Dion Sanders to belike humbled necessarily because I'm not about that.
But I think it's just really likekind of acknowledging or holding in your
head that college football inherently is kindof set up this way where it's just
like somebody has to fail, butthe person who causes that failure isn't necessarily

(28:03):
a good person either, So it'sjust about enjoying the show kind of.
And I think that really fits inwith beyond sanders whole promotional personality. Yeah,
there's no like big time FCS collegefootball. There's really no our FBS
college Football day. There's not reallyany good guys to speak up. There's

(28:25):
I mean, like everybody roots fortheir their teams and and of course it's
more fun to root against the youknow, the bigger A holes in college
football, but there's no real likeit's like there's no ethical consumption in capitalism,
there's no ethical consumption in big timecollege football, you know. And
I say this as somebody who hasfor the last like six years worked for
an FCS college football team is nowherenear the level of FBS. So I

(28:49):
know there's some hypocrisy, but it'sJason Kirk of the Shutdown Fullcasts like to
say everything's bad, but so yeah, it's it's really it's tough because I
don't think he's going to be ahumbled. Deon strikes me as a type
of guy that, even when,as I predict, Utah will just beat
the pants off of Colorado at theend of the season, just because there's

(29:10):
so much bigger, dal will finda way to turn that into a positive
ish type of thing. Yeah.I don't want to see him humbled either,
but at the same time, I'dlike to see a little more credit
gover to the Colorado player. Idon't know, like this is gonna be
a season long thing trying to figurethis out for me, No, I
think. I mean, for sure, it does help that he has Travis

(29:30):
Hunter, because Travis Hunter is likea legit player, and you can kind
of, oh, well, canyou play two ways? Though, especially
Colorado. You're an age played outthere one year and I walked up a
hill and wanted to die. Now, granted I'm not an elite college athlete,
believe it or not, but howcan you play one hundred and twenty
players at altitude? Yeah? Thatwas that's tough. Like Yeah, and
he was playing for the week onebecause they were at TCU, so it's

(29:52):
like one hundred twenty snaps in Texas. He right, and he's gonna have
to do that the whole season.I feel like they're gonna have to get
him to commit to one side ofthe wall or just like kind of have
people sub in for him on defensebecause you would rather I feel like you
would probably want to have him moreon offense and then kind of shift him
to dB when it's in the likemaybe the second half. But I don't

(30:17):
know. I mean that's like,yeah, that's a I think that's a
good problem to have, for goodproblem to have. Yeah, So where
do you think this goes through?Do you think Dion I obviously I don't
think Colorado is his final destination.Do we think he wants to, you
know, coach in Florida States?Do we think he wants to go to
a bigger time program like maybe inthe SEC somewhere? Is the NFL his

(30:40):
ultimate goal? And how broken cancollege football? I guess college football is
doing a good job of breaking itselfcurrently, But how in what way could
standers break college football to kind ofbend to his will? Do you think
on his way to wherever he's going? I mean, yeah, I don't
know what the end game is forhim. I think he just wants something
larger. Basically, at whatever astep he's at, he just wants something

(31:03):
larger, and I guess I understandthat I would assume he would want FSU
eventually. I don't know if itnecessarily lines up with I think it is
it Mike Norvill is their at FSUright now? Yeah, yeah, I
don't know how it lines up withhow much job security that guy has,
but I guess for like this season, I think the way I would look
at it is, let's see whoDion can upset, both like on the

(31:29):
field and like just like personally. But I'm also like kind of curious to
see what happens in a bowl gamebecause Jackson State at the end of the
season they didn't do that great.I believe they lost both of those title
games. They lost to North Carolinaessential to either go to the Celebration Bowl

(31:52):
or in this I think it wasto go to the Celebration Bowl. Got
it? Actually, I actually tosee that was funny at a rooting interest
that game. North Carolina Central beatthe hell out of UNH last year,
and I really loved their team,so I was I had opinions on that
game as it was happening. Ifpeople would look at me like I had
three heads. But that's that's mylife now, I guess, nice.

(32:13):
Nice. Yeah, I'm just I'mcurious to see how it goes in a
Bowl game, because I don't think, like I find it really hard to
believe that Dion would skip town afterone season unless something incredible happened or you
got like an offer, like agodfather offer some sort for at larger school.
But I don't know. I understandwhy everybody's so fixated on it is

(32:34):
because it's such a rare circumstance andyou truly don't know why he's going to
do at the end of the year. Yeah, that would that would be
Uh. I think Colorado I pullout all the legal stops to keep him
in town. I fee because Imean what Colorado tickets are going for?
What an insane them out now there? I mean, oh yeah, I
think Colorado is going to get alltheir money's worth and then some just by

(32:55):
this signing, which you know, even three weeks ago people were kind of
the scratching their that. But onegame in and all of a sudden,
it's it looks like a masterstroke byby Colorado. Yeah, it's instantly like
especially as a PAC twelve is fallingapart. Colorado is an appealing school to
have on the schedule or in yourconference or just on TV. Absolutely.

(33:20):
Uh the summer klop of defector dotcom. What else are you working on
for a defector? Which is?Uh? Whatever gave rosson here? I
like to say, is it gotsto have for websites? You have to
pick and choose what you pay fornow, but defector dot com is certainly
worth the monthly or yearly fee thatyou have to dish out. So what
else are you working on over thereright now? I wrote a thing on

(33:43):
Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon today justto it was a little unfair, I
think because they haven't even played agame. But I'm kind of I'm kind
of, I would say, doubtfulof how much confidence this guy has at
every thing I hear about him. It's just like less and less inspiring as
an NFL coach. But beyond that, I've just been editing some us open

(34:07):
stuff that we have from some ofour writers, So I would recommend people
check that out all right, absolutely, and people can follow you on Twitter
at is it that Underscore Sam orUnderscore or oh just Samer, just Samura,
that's right. Yeah, I don'tknow why I thought of the underscores,
but Samma, I appreciate you beingon the show. I love the
deon Sanders ark Ill, love yourstuff on Defector, and I hope you

(34:29):
can do this again soon. Yeah, definitely, thank you for having me.
Welcome back to overtime, fourth andfinal segment of the program today.
And I did program you man.If I haven't built this into your head
by now, unlikely I will besuccessful in doing so. But you were
rich football. We are in Michigancurrently, well currently I'm in my living

(34:52):
room as I record this, butright as you hear this, I'm in
Michigan and Mount Pleasant. Is thatwhat it's called? Getting great? First
Central Michigan and unh We're on theArt one PM and I just got the
itinerary. We're not arriving to theSteam until eleven twenty, which gives me
anxiety because up to me, we'dget there four and a half hours early
so I can set things up andthen just chill out. But it's not

(35:13):
really how it works. On theroad. One thirty kickoff joined myself and
cam Beeal for all the action.I think you want to just got a
chance in this game. I don'twant to drink anything by saying it.
Some of the nerd websites are predictingUNH to win by seven and a half
points, which you know you can'tdo in football, but they round it
up to eight. So I don'tknow. Pat Collin will have the Wildcat

(35:35):
history. The last two times thesetwo teams have met, they meet every
ten years, like clockwork, thegames have been pretty close. Central Michigan
needed a last second field goal intwenty thirteen to pull off the wind over
UNH. So see if the Catscan get it done today. Maybe maybe
not one hundred thousand yards and penaltiesthat would be That would be a nice
way to do it. As I'mrecording this, it's Thursday. The NFL

(35:57):
kicks off in allegedly an hour intwenty minutes. It's about seven o'clock as
I recorded this, right because Ihave to go to bed at a stupidly
early hour because of the New HampshireToday's Show, which as you know,
I produce, and kind of crackwise on nighttime. Football games, basketball
games, most baseball games are Idon't I have to I have to be

(36:20):
like Robert or I have to showup for the big games like this,
uh, this Chiefs Lions game.I'll watch maybe half of the first quarter
and then I'll be I'll be doingthe old guy not off and that'll be
it that I'll put it on myphone the radio broadcast and pretend like I'm
gonna listen to it as I andI'll hear three plays and that'll be a
rap. And so I don't Ithink it might be a little Mac Jones

(36:45):
why I'm not as excited for Usuallythe NFL season is like the start of
the NFL season is a big holidayfor me personally last year. This year,
like Mac Jones is gonna watch theteam go nine and eight and maybe
miss out on the play offs, and I'll just be swearing at him for
three hours every Sunday, which isyou know, how else would you spend

(37:07):
a Sunday? But so not notquite as fired up for. That will
change by like week three. Weekthree, There'll be some dumb stuff that
happens. That's become as I've gottenolder, the dumb stuff that happens in
sports has become my favorite thing aboutany sort of supporting event where there's college
football, pro football, even Formulaone like the we on Sunday mornings,

(37:30):
we spent two hours watching the Formulaone race, and then my daughter and
I spent the next four days sendingmemes about all the dumb stuff that happened
during the race through each other. And uh, my wife and I can
attest this because she gets caught inthe group chat and it's like, can
you guys shot up with this groupchat? My phone's buzzing me at work
and I've had enough of it.But uh, yeah, by week three,
I'll be all in on the NFLseason with the with the dumb stuff

(37:52):
that happens. I did want tomention I touched on this last week,
but I did want to mention thatmy prediction about the the Indy Sandborn thing
has come true as far as UHconservative commentators in New Hampshire not even acknowledging
that this existed. So real quick, if you're not familiar, Andy Sandborn

(38:12):
used to be a state senator wasrunning some charitable casinos in uh conquered Uh.
The Attorney General's office did an investigationbecause he was going to expand one
of them, so they had tolike kind of check their books and make
sure you everything was hunky dorry. As it turns out, they were super
not hunky dory. Uh Andy Sandbornallegedly, i'm gonna say, allegedly allegedly

(38:36):
procured some COVID funds, which you'renot supposed to get a if you're running
a casino, and b you're definitelynot supposed to spend all that money on
sports cars for you and your wife. That's allegedly crooked on two different levels.
So they're not gonna let him runcasinos no more allegedly. Uh So
that's you. Kind of this guykind of has a reputation for allegedly being

(39:00):
pretty crooked allegedly, so it wasn'ta big shock to anybody that knows any
of Indy Sanborne's alleged pass Also, and his wife was like the chair of
the New Hampshire House committee first studyingcharitable gaming, which seemed to be a
conflict before all the alleged crooked hashappened. But she has since resigned as
the head of that commission, whichis probably good, but still his chair

(39:22):
of the Ways and Means Commission inthe New Hampshire House, which doesn't seem
great. That's something should probably bedone about that. But the point was
this, Uh, most of themedia on the radio, most of radio
media and talk news talk is wildlyinsanely conservative. In fact, I think
I'm the only person on a newstalk radio that's that's not a conserve.

(39:44):
Chris Ryan says he's independent. Youknow, he leans to the right.
It's fine, but I predicted lastweek that you know, the guy that
used to work here, and uh, the guy across town in Manchester,
we're not touched this story with aten foot pole. You hear lots of
crying out a shoplifting spreeze at highend stores and let's say Los Angeles,

(40:06):
San Francisco that are highly in short, you hear lots of crying about that.
You hear lots of crying about welfare. You hear lots of crying about
student loan relief. But when Iwhen when somebody in their little club rips
off the taxpayers for almost a millieso he could buy himself and his wife

(40:27):
sports cars and just give himself twohundred thousand dollars. Allegedly, none of
those people had say and it wasnot shocking in the least, but it
still needs to be pointed out asthe highest form of hypocrisy, but it
just drives me nuts, Like like, oh, I had to pay off
my student loans even though I wasrich and I didn't actually have student loans.

(40:49):
Everyone else should have to too, even though student loans is a predatory
system that's set up to rip offpeople when they're at the age of eighteen
and don't know any better. Butno, but my, but me who
was a state senator and is inthe rich guy club with his title or
his former title, he's allowed torip off the taxpayers. Why because that's

(41:09):
just how it got. Like it'ssome sickening, Like if you're gonna like
a it's disingenuous to criticize folks onwelfare and the folks that want student loan
relief. But let's say it wasn'tit's so wildly hypocritical to call that out
and not call out this dude who'sgonna do time. He's gonna do some

(41:30):
federal time allegedly for the alleged crimeshe's done. So I just a little
consistency, that's all I'm asking for, Just a little consistently consistency. Don't
need a ton of it. Idon't expect it out of any form of
media myself, including but just alittle bit. All right, that's gonna
wrap it up for today's show. One more time one o'clock pre game one

(41:52):
thirty kickoff for un H at CentralMichigan. Hopefully we come home with a
w if not. Next week isthe home put her for your H under
the Lights against Dartmouth. That gamegot a little chippy last year. They
couldn't find the Granite Bowl trophy,so the clan's kind of converged at midfield
and there was almost a fracas. But we'll see how it goes this year.
But that's next week. This weekis Central Michigan. That's at one

(42:15):
o'clock and that isn't about two hoursfrom now. I hope you'll tune in.
Thanks I guess Sarah Kaloff for beingon the program today again. Check
him out at defector dot com.His piece on Dion Sanders kind of making
big time college football revolve around himis a good one, as is all
the stuff over at defector dot com. My name is j mcasa. Thanks

(42:37):
so much for listening. I willcheck in with you guys next week.
Until then, remember hippies, arebad people pretending to be good. Punks
are good people pretending to be back
