Speaker 1 (00:00):
Glenn Mason said a long time ago at the University
of Minnesota, you need a Pair and a Spare.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Thank you, PJ.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
It is indeed time for another edition of the Pair
and a Spare podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
I'm justin guard from Kfan.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
We've got Chipskoggins from Football Across Minnesota and the Star
Tribune and about to head down to Phoenix, where I
currently am. Ryan Burns from Gopher Illustrated dot Com. Happy
Rate Bowl week, guys, it's no longer the guaranteed rate Bowl.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're on your own.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
If you want to guarantee they'll give you a rate.
They're not sure what it's going to be, and neither
of you. But we've got Golphers and New Mexico just
a couple of days from now. How's everybody doing a
couple of days before Christmas?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Chip?
Speaker 4 (00:36):
You strike me as the guy who did his Christmas
shopping back in July.
Speaker 5 (00:42):
I don't do a lot of the shopping. My wife
does because she can do it by her phone.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I still like to go to stores and look around.
We went.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
I did have to get it done early because I
did the Vikings Giants game in New York over the weekends.
So I knew it was going to be gone for
part of the at so I think it's all done.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yeah, okay, well we had to get it done Burnsey
because we had to we had to come to Phoenix.
We have I can't talk too loudly because I've got
multiple children and other people's children all over this house
that we're staying at. We had to pack two suitcases
of presents. You brought them all down because Santa had
to show up.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
I'm sure.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, we didn't bring all of them, but we brought
a substantial number. And so there's two suitcases. I don't
even know where they are in this house that they
are packed away and tucked away for family Christmas tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
We'll do that on Christmas.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Even then, Yeah, Santa comes on Christmas morning and we
got to open the presence and check out of this.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Place somewhere in North Scottsdale.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
So that's how I think you should should regale our
listeners here with how gigantic your house is there in
Scottsdale for Christmas there and how tough it is to
you go from the west side of the Cities to Scottsdale, Arizona.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
The house isn't that big. It's nice.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
I'm not gonna lie. It's in one of these you know,
retirement communities. It looks like where every other house is
an Airbnb or vrbo, verbo, whatever you prefer. And so
we've got I don't know, we've got seven kids here
and ten adults. I think is what we have between
my parents, my sisters, their husbands, and my family. And
so right now they're either playing pickleball, swimming in the pool,
(02:20):
or doing some mini golf, which is all available in
the backyard. That's what they're doing right now.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
And as you can see, i'm a backyard by the way,
for those of you who didn't hear that, clearly, all
of that is just in his backyard right now.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, it takes up all the yard. It's not like
there's a great citting area. Well there actually are a
couple with a fire pit. But honestly, this was and
I guess I've gotten some texts today. I guess the
powers at Morning show has been talking about this all
morning that I'm in some you know drug dealer's mansion
in Scottsdale somewhere. It's not quite it, not quite exactly it,
(02:53):
but I will say in one of the Airbnb capitals
of the world. This is a nice setup for a
big family, and it was cheaper then just get in
a regular hotel room. So I'm in the video game room.
As you can tell, this is our bedroom. I slept
on the bottom bunk of a bunk bed over here
last night, and I don't know if you can see this,
but I forgot I was in the bottom bunk and
I slammed myself up at about two thirty in the
(03:15):
morning and just smoked my head, just absolutely smoked my head.
And so that's going to leave a mark that will
probably still be there for the go for pregame show
on Friday night or Friday afternoon. But yeah, this came
together and like, remember how much crap I gave you
for the JW.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Marriott And look.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
At where you are now, Look at.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Where I am now.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
None of this was in the plans until about ten
days ago, and I called my mom and said, what
if we did this? She said, I'm in call your sisters,
let's get it done. So we're doing a guardsy family
Christmas here, which has been fun only multi only, like
ten fights. In the last twenty four hours. I've had
to officiate. But I'm ready. I'm ready for media day tomorrow.
I'll be there burnsy, hopefully with no more scrapes on
(03:56):
my face head.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
Did you draw blood all the night?
Speaker 1 (04:00):
No, it doesn't looks like I saved it. But then
I was worried. I'm like, God, how hard did I
hit it? Like? You know, I had a concussion. It's
I smoked it pretty good. I was impressed with my
my core strength to just fire up that quickly.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well, the athlete you are.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
I'm just trying to figure out who hit their head harder.
You on a bunk, better me on a surfboard the
night before my wedding surfboard.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Pretty close. It's close.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, I didn't need any like touch ups, you know,
with a broken nose like you had.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
But I will say for anybody that's coming down that's
making the trip, you're gonna be glad you did because
the weather is spectacular. Remember a couple of years ago Burnsley,
it was kind of chilly, it was a little cold.
December is always kind of a crapshoot. It is phenomenal.
I mean we're talking.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Looked at the weather here going forward, especially in and
around Christmas.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Time I have not I have not been.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
It's going to start raining here and it's going to
drop down into the low seventies, upper sixties. So I
get to come into town and it's going to be
seventies and low seventies, and I think there's going to
be some rain on Christmas. So just like everybody pictures
in the hills, that is Phoenix, Arizona.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, it's nice right now. We're going to enjoy today.
I know that.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
All right, where do we want to start. Let's start
Gophers and then go national. Let's do that today because
there's some Michigan stuff to get to. There's college football
playoffs stuff to get to. There's coaching search stuff to
get to, a lot of stuff.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
To get to.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
But Burnsy, why don't why don't you give us like
the three minute elevator speech on New Mexico Because I
read your stuff today from Albuquerque Journal. Guy, I know
you did the full deep dive. For people that really
want to dive into it. As I always say, go
to the Gopher Great Iron podcast because Luke and Burnsy
do a great job with it. And I'm going to
try to listen to that today in between pickleball sets.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
And you know, train museums.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
I don't exactly, but this is what I like about
this game because the biggest thing in bowls Now is
and this has been the case for a while, who
actually cares that they're there? Who is expected there? And
I like the fact that the Gophers always cared her there.
That's one of the things I appreciate about PJ is
that even if they have a few opt outs, and
(06:05):
I know we have some, I like the fact that
there's my.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Wife back from a run.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Hey, you want to say hi here on now, well,
you shouldn't.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Have come in that podcast you want to say hi, you.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Shouldn't have come in. It's like it was a pretty
good jog getting behind the scenes there. I've seen that.
Good luck the rest of day. Speaking speaking, she just
came in for a water. We got to sink outside.
Not my fault.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
You just guaranteed you're going to be in one later.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
The bottom bunk again to night.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
I appreciate that the Gophers always want to be in
the bulls right, and New Mexico is clearly thrilled to
be here, which I think is great. And they don't
have really any opt outs. I know they have some injuries.
Burnsy and So is a team that's trying to build
off one of their their best seasons ever, winning nine
games and they've never won ten. And so I like
the fact that it sets up to be a game
(06:58):
that two teams that are actually happy.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
To be here.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
I mean, you look at Minnesota, they've won eight straight
bowl games or six and Zer under Fleck. This is
a team that has historically taken these games very seriously.
You know what, I know what anybody knows that this
team is taking this Bowl very seriously because on the
flip side of things, you're going to be facing a
New Mexico team who went nine to three. I'm told
that Richard Patino does not coach the New Mexico Lobos
(07:26):
football team. It is a Lacrosse, Wisconsin native by the
name of Jason Eck.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Why is that important because he went to UW Madison.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
You don't think the guy who played football at UW
Madison doesn't already hate the Golden Gophers in his blood
and then professionally just take out the personal aspect of it.
He is on the short list to be the successor
to Luke Fickel if it goes pear shaped again next year.
If not, I mean he might even be in the
Michigan discussion here later on. I've seen more national punits
(07:57):
throughout his name. He's only been a head coach for
four something years. He's got a very strong background here
in the Midwest, from Minnesota state man Cato to UW Madison.
So whether it's in a personal capacity that he is
in Madison grad so it doesn't like Minnesota, or he
knows that patting his resume with a Golden Gopher victory
(08:17):
looks pretty good to Chris McIntosh over there at UW Madison.
Next year, they're going to be taking this game very seriously.
From what I understand, they don't have many opt outs
at all. They got the reigning Mountain West defensive player
of the Year, Jackston Eck, who is his son, came
over with him from Idaho. They've got one of the
best pass rushers in the entire Mountain West number one
(08:39):
for them. So on the Minnesota side of things, I
think you've seen now as more and more photos are
coming out from Phoenix that guys like Coy Perrich and
Anthony Smith and Darius Taylor all down the line, they
made the trip they're planning on playing, so you're going
to see I don't know what the football is exactly
going to look in this game, but I can assure
(09:01):
you both teams are going to be giving it their
best efforts, which welcome to That is the bar to
clear now on bowl games in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
Yeah, that's I've always said that about ball games guards.
He's right, and my experience covered him. It's which guys
are most excited to be there and play, not which
guys are excited to be there and have.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Fun and the vacation and all that.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
And I gotta imagine you know, I can't speak a
lot about their talent and who they have or schemes,
but it's a chance to knock off a Big ten team,
So you know New Mexico is going to take that seriously.
That's an opportunity to anytime you have a lower level
team getting a chance to face a power to team,
they're gonna be engaged competitively and want to throw their
(09:48):
best punch. So but you're right, I mean, PJ. We've
seen his staff. They you know, I'm sure they allow
the guys to have fun. But when it's the come
to game, time they do take it, so and you know,
it's it's another chance for this team to I don't know,
(10:12):
it's not going to define your season by any stretch,
but just just play together for some young guys that,
you know, maybe show what they can do going into
the next season. I think anytime Drake Lindsay can play,
that's an important step in his development. So so there's
some you know, important factors for it. That's an exhibition game.
(10:34):
That's basically what you know, let's call it what it is.
So there are some important markers there.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Well, I also think you look at it just x
as an Owes standpoint. They've got the number one defense
run defense in the Mountain West. The Gophers are the
worst run offense. And then I look at what Darius
Taylor has done in bowl games the last two years,
and he's gone nuclear in both games to the point
where they're averaging giving him thirty touches per bowl game
the last two years. They're well that he doesn't have
(11:01):
to play football for another nine months and he's gotten
three four weeks to rest his body, and he doesn't
have a ton of touches on it. So I'm going
to be very very interested as I'm sitting there in
the baseball press box to see how many touches does
Darius Taylor get? How much receiver does Darius Taylor play?
Because so many receivers aren't going to be playing in
(11:21):
this game. I also am very curious to see if
Chips guy Koy Perritch sets a new season high on
offense because they've had multiple weeks to prepare him. I'm
pretty convinced at this point Lamecky Brockington is not going
to be playing in this game. Same thing with Malachai Coleman,
Kenrick Lanier. That's three guys at least from your rotation
this year that won't be in there. So how can
(11:43):
they move the football? But the overarching point, and I
want to get your guys' thoughts on this is too
We've seen between whether it's Big ten and Group of
five or just Group of five and Power four here
in Bowl season where Washington took on what I thought
was a pretty good Mountain West team State and they
just obliterated them. And then you look at what even
(12:04):
all missing Intulane did in Part two, or Oregon versus
James Madison when Oregon cared I think one of the
things I've learned, at least this season so far, is
that the discrepancy between Power four teams is getting smaller
and smaller. But the discrepancy between the Group of five
(12:25):
and the Power four, I think is widening a little
bit every year. And this is not the same group
of five that it was when PJ. Fleck coached there
now ten years ago. So go ahead, Chip.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Sorry in ruct you as I'd say, it's because the
good players there are making a lot of money for
the power for us, yeah, exactly, they're going to make money.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Hey, I'm gonna.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
Circle back to the thing you said on Koy. Do
you think that comes back into the fold the offense
next year?
Speaker 4 (12:51):
I think that's up. I think again, you go back
to that col game. Part of why they fell apart
as Koy Parrich had the worst game of his career.
I mean, he has the muffed one where that changed
the entire course of the game in that third fourth
quarter there, and I think it got to be too
much in the non conference, which is why Fleck eventually
took it back off his plate. Now he added just
(13:13):
a titch towards the end of the season, but that's
gonna be up to Koy Perridge, and I know that
there's been some chat here behind the scenes as Minnesota's
going through contract negotiations with all these guys for twenty
twenty six. Is I'm sure Koy does want to play
all three fast sets again. But my point to the
peerage representation would be, that's fine, but you're gonna have
(13:33):
to handle it a lot better than you did to
start in twenty twenty six in September for that say,
Eastern Illinois Mississippi State game, et cetera, et cetera. I
mean that's up to Koy Perridge. How much can he handle.
I mean, I think you also have to put more
on the plate of the offensive receiving coaches to make
sure that he is ready to go with stuff like that,
(13:55):
and he's not thinking too much because you want to
have Koy Parritge playing fast. But I think for this
bowl game, I'm gonna guess that we see more Koy
Parrots on offense than we've seen.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
I agree, yeah, I mean bowl game, that's you know,
why not experiment with everything?
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Who cares? You know? But I agree, I think he
needs to prove that he can be.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
A really great defensive back first and feel comfortable with
that because I think we all saw it and guards you,
I thought you made the great point.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
At the time.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
It's like he's getting spread tooth in. He never got
a break, and it just he got to a point
where I don't know he was good at any of
the things he was doing at that time until he say, okay,
you know, to the credit, say let's let's hip pause,
you know, establish yourself being a great defensive back first.
And so you're right, I mean maybe another year, maybe
(14:46):
a different I don't approach or thought on that, but
to me, I would be more inclined to really go
out and hit the portal hard with the receivers so
it doesn't have to I don't know if they were
depending on him, I don't. I don't know if that's
(15:07):
the right word to help out on offense. But I
think we all got carried away with, you know, the
hunter two point zero and thinking he's going to be
dynamic in all these different positions. I think we just
kind of jumped the jump the gun way too.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Much on that, No doubt we did. Yeah, and he
never sat down on the bench in those first few days.
That was the thing that was interesting. He was just
always standing there has to be a middle ground to
answer the overarching question, Like there has to be three
personnel packages where he can go in a couple of
times a half to run a jet sweep, to do
some kind of bubble screen, to take a deep shot
like without burning him out, Like I don't, I know,
(15:46):
I'm not a football guy.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
Burns that you played.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
It can't be that complicated to figure out how to
get the guy ten snaps a game on offense, Like
it just can't, can't, Like it just can't. It's so
especially depending on who else they bring in and who
else they need, Like he's a dynamic player with the
ball in his hands. It can't be that difficult to say,
we're not going to maybe do everything we did a
year ago, but yes, we are going to try to
mix you in a little bit.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Just that to me shouldn't be that difficult.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
It's just like who's your team's third and fourth receiver,
you know, for an NFL team, Like when Adam Thielam
was here, he was getting ten snaps, Like why can't
that happen? Like that should be pretty in my opinion,
if you have the whole offseason to think about it again,
it should be pretty simple to figure out a way
to get him the ball a little bit.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
I think he as much as that.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
You saw the mistakes showing up in the other areas,
so they said, okay, let's you know, when you had
the miscues at Cow and special teams and some bad
angles and on defense, I think that's where they said, okay,
let's you know, it may not be that much, but
until you feel comfortable, but where he is on defense,
especially teams. But I mean that's something to be you know,
(16:58):
be determined. But I agree with you Bowl game, try anything.
I mean, what did we see last year?
Speaker 3 (17:04):
We saw it? Was it Lindsay threw a pass to
uh yeah something? Yeah, yeah, like those things.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
That's what it's for, you know exactly.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
I think last time in Phoenix I had to watch
for gon Kessie try to win a foot race to
the pylon or was that that Daniel destroys John Michael
Schmidtz's ankle game.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
It was it was that.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
Yeah, the the Quick Laying Bowl was cassage cash didn't
get there. But yeah, Phoenix was foulele hurting John Michael
Schmidz And the best part of that story is he
was planning on proposing to his girlfriend, like the next
day his ankle shredded, So he's got this whole thing
planned like they were going. I think it was at
(17:46):
the team hotel or something, you know, beautiful place to walk.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
And blah blah blah, and.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
He's having surgery or you know, preparing for surgery something like.
I don't remember the exact story, but there was. It
wasn't just that he you know, hurt his ankle. It
was that he had plans after the ball game that
were altered by Daniel fole Le landing on him the
fall a La push push. Is there anything else with
players that we need to talk about before we kind
of pivot and talk about some other stuff, Guys that
(18:12):
have already said they're coming back next year or any
you still feel like they're in a pretty predictable spot,
in a good spot there, Burnsy, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
I think there's a couple of guys they're waiting on.
But I think by the time people listen to this today,
we've already started to see Dinky Town athletes. As we're
recording this has come back and said we've signed Greg Johnson,
who's been an iron Man for them, and I think
is going to be an NFL draft pick in twenty
twenty seven or even just here. Recently, they just announced
(18:40):
John Nester is going to be back to So I
think you're going to see plenty of guys, and we'll
spend next week's episode kind of going through who's back
who's not, because by then we're going to know who's
got intentions to hit the portal. But I think they're
in a pretty good spot player retention wise, and I
think especially by the time people listen to this, some
of the favorite players for fans, they're going to be
(19:00):
coming back.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Bergie.
Speaker 5 (19:02):
Just for clarity, when you say sign, just for clarity
for listeners, you're saying sign dinky Town or sign.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
All at the university.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
They've signed, they've signed their house agreement money thing, and
then they also sign a different contract with Dinkytown Athletes. Now,
is it one hundred percent infallible to get out of?
Speaker 2 (19:24):
No?
Speaker 4 (19:25):
Is it ninety eight percent plus? Yes, These players and
their representation aren't signing these things to where they plan
on them just trying to read an egg on it
back in January. So if they have signed and Dinkytown
Athletes is announcing them. I think that should tell you
about Minnesota Dankeytown athletes and the player's intentions to for
(19:47):
the twenty twenty six season.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Ye all right, well we will follow Goper Illustrated for
all of the info there, Burnsy, there you go.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
I know you will have it. Before we talk playoffs
and talk some other national stuff. We're gonna do a
quick episode today just to get Burnsy on a plane.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Chips.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Got a busy day, mister projects. That's all always how
it works. We got to talk about Jack's Cafe I got.
We all got a great tweet from a long time
listener that did their third straight breakfast with Santa. And
that's got to be fun to have the continuation of
every single year going to Jack's, making it a part
of your family tradition. I hope people enjoyed those three
saturdays there was We weren't able to make it because
(20:25):
of you know, Raiz, it's around here, so you can't
possibly miss hockey, swim, tennis, basketball and everything else that's
going on. But we regret that we were not able
to because we love it. It's so fun and appreciate
people that did check that out. And hopefully you have
a family tradition as well. My kids were very bitter
that we didn't go, and so now we've got to
go find a brunch at some point when we have
(20:46):
a free weekend where Santa will not be there, which
is a buzzkill. But Burnsy, you just popped into Jack's
Cafe as well this week for some holiday dining.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
I did just last night, went over to Jack's Cafe.
Brought another friend of mine and their one year old child,
and she was absolutely infatuated with the patio, which we
all are infatuated. I will say this, It was fascinating
to see so many people go from their tables and
they talk to their waiter and they bring you around
the special entrance can get outside onto the patio to
(21:16):
take these pictures. I mean, the food's always fantastic. I
was there probably three or four weeks ago. In my
waitress recognized like was like, hey, you were just here
a couple of weeks, so so glad, so glad you're back.
And I'm like, she didn't have to do that. Everybody
looking at me in my entire life, no is I
have a face for radio and a body for podcasting.
(21:38):
I am not.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
That's why they remembered what you ate. Nomber had to
alert the staff.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
That's the attention to detail that they have there at
Jack's Cafe. We had a wonderful meal, a couple of
great cocktails. So for those of you looking to do
something in and around the holidays here, I know they
still got reservations available. It's at Jaxcafe dot com.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
You talk about the photos.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
We sat right there at the table that was right
on the glass overlooking the patio and you're right to night.
Me and my wife went probably fifteen people went out there.
I was like, think about how many Christmas cards that's
going to be next year that they either did by
that that cool fireplace that Bill asked him about it,
he put that in like fifteen years ago.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
But that the Santa.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Sleigh that they have out there has been in his
family for generations.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
He's at it's a lot of refurbished.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
It is great, But so many people got their their photos.
They're like, yeah, there's a Christmas card coming next year.
Great great vibe, awesome food and it's a perfect spot
for a holiday OUTI right, if you're out and about
doing stuff, pop into Jackson.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
You're going to enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Love it yep, and like we say, support those that
support us, and nobody supported us more than Jack's Cafe,
longtime partnership. Now we appreciate billing everybody there and all
the parents fare listeners that pop in on Jack's.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
He loves it. We love it. Keep going, keep.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Sending us the pictures, keep sending us in tweets, and
like Burnsy said, and make your reservations at Jackscafe dot com.
If you're watching on YouTube, it's right there at the
bottom of the screen Jaxcafe dot com. Biff Pogi made
his push for Michigan coach earlier this week basically said, yeah,
everything you're reading about this place, oh yeah, it's a mess.
And even though I've been here for like all of it,
(23:19):
I know how to fix it all. And I know
what the hell I'm doing. And I do like the
Biff Pog story and that he's just this rich dude
that wanted to coach football, like what a dream. Like
That's what I would do if I won the Mega
Millions or the power Ball. I would just say, hey,
Burnsy and Chip, you got parents, I'm gonna go see
if I'm gonna go see if Nico needs any help.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
I'm gonna go post.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
I'm gonna coach for a couple of years, and you know,
let this five nine frustrated point guard give you some help.
But he was pretty interesting, I thought, talking about how
messed up they are, and I don't think he's got
a chance to get the job, but it's it was
an interesting, you know sermon.
Speaker 5 (23:53):
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if they keep
him on in some capacity because I think I liked
what he said in the manner in which he said it.
You know, he said, let's be honest here this is
I think he called it, Hey, there's your wife again?
Oh is their kids there? There?
Speaker 2 (24:08):
No, I'm not sure why it's so confusing.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
Where he said, uh, let's call it what it is,
organizational dysfunction. And you know, he said he you know,
you can't run from it, and you because people are
asking about it. That I assumeing he talked about recruits
and parents saying hey, what's going on there?
Speaker 3 (24:29):
So I don't know, you know, I think.
Speaker 5 (24:35):
I thought jetfish, if it was gonna be Jetfish, it
probably would be by now.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
So I don't know what they're gonna do.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
The longer this goes and it's could change, you know,
before this thing he post. I wouldn't be surprised if
they gave it to BIF for one year just to
calm the seas, try to get some structure there, and
then go back into the uh uh coaching search next year.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Well the other name, well, there's two other names I
want to broach with you guys that we didn't talk
about last time. One is now retiring Utah coach Kyle Whittingham,
who has made it very very clear that he wants
to continue to coach and that he may be getting
pushed out at the end of his Utah tenure here yep.
Where if you're going to go with a one or
two year approach or whatever it may be, would you
(25:23):
prefer Kyle Whitningham or Biff Pogi.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
Kyle Winningham thank coach without a doubt one hundred percent.
That guy is a really good coach.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
I did hear over the weekend though, that Yeah, he's
made it abundantly clear he would love that job, and
I think it's come back abundantly clear the other way
that he's not getting it. So I would be surprised
if they did that. But because you're right, that name
makes a lot of sense because that dude's a stud
and he's sixty six years old. I mean he could
go another five six, seven years he I mean he
looks like he could, you know, bench press the big house, right,
(25:55):
like he keets himself in really good shape, like he
doesn't want to sol on. I'm surprised that Utah wants
to get to their coach and waiting so quickly. But
maybe he just hasn't adjusted to the new hero like
they wanted. I don't know what was the other name, Burnsy.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
Well, the one that our Michigan say has been saying
that has been in a lot of contact during the
last forty eight hours. Is your guy guards he Jeff Brohm.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Where you were going? Yep? I've read a lot about that.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
He took himself out of the Penn State running or
said he wasn't doing it. But that dude's always looking
man like. People think he was always looking like Jeff
brom is always looking and he's at his alma mater
right Louisville, Like isn't that where he's like, man, you're
gonna do your.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Alma mater like that? Like yeah, no, I get it,
I get it.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
But I we'll see. He's obviously a good coach. You know,
he did good things at Purdue, which is a hard
place to win. We've seen it since he's left, right,
they're on their coach now or second since he's left,
And obviously Louisville has been.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Pretty solid since he got back there. He a good coach.
They shouldn't looking at a guy like brom You know.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
The thing on winning him that I was thinking about
this the other day is it sort of reminds me
when Tennessee went out basketball and got out got Rick Barnes.
We had all this mess I say we, I can
say we you know, we had coaching turnover and just
it was a chaotic time for Tennessee basketball. They went
(27:26):
and hired Rick Barnes. I'm like, you know what, this
is a veteran coach who's just gonna calm the waters.
You're going to get a good coach. I thought towards
the end of his career turned out to be the
best thing that's ever having to Tennsee basketball.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
And he stayed.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Now he's got like a lifetime contract and he's like,
well he's not too old to coach this. I mean,
he's been the best thing that's happened to him.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
So if they're looking.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
At Winningham's age and thinking that we really want to,
I mean I wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
I wouldn't hold that up. If the guy's a good
coach and you feel.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
Like he would be a good fit to bring some
order and structure and discipline and all those things at
that that department need right now. I think that would
be a priority for me, is finding somebody who's going
to straighten things out. Well.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
The other thing with his Michigan SERTs that I've seen
reported here by I think local guys in Michigan and
also national reporters is they're saying that they want to
hire by Christmas.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Yeah, Pogi said that even by the Bowl game he
wants to have it where Manual wants to have it
locked in.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
Well, we're I mean Santa's coming to town here in
thirty six hours or if we're going by the bowl game,
he got a few extra days after that.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
But it's New Year's e Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
I'm very very curious because this feels like one of
those where are they still trying to wait out Kailin
de boor is that whole entire thing sale did it
ever even get off the dock to begin with. I
don't know, but I almost feel like when this thing
does drop, is it going to be a name where
it's like, does this actually make sense? Are they actually
going the Intern? Are they actually going to go with
(28:54):
Jeff Brohm? Is it going to be an out of
left field with de boor his Dealingham is now signed
his deal. I am fascinated by this higher because I'm
very curious to see what the domino effects are going
to be elsewhere, because if someone like Debor, say he
does take the job, I mean, now Bama becomes open,
and we've seen how that just continues to go down
(29:14):
the line, down the line, down the line, because the portal,
she doesn't wait for anybody, and she's opening her doors
on January second, and then you're going to see places
like Minnesota even start to host official visitors. Then, so
this thing needs to get wrapped up sooner than later.
The question is going to be is it by Christmas?
Is it by New Years? And who is it going
(29:35):
to be? I am fascinated by it.
Speaker 5 (29:36):
Would you make a deal to him saying now I'll
stay at Arizona State. Now, obviously they're making a big
financial investment in him in the program, so that that
changes things. But again.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Turn out the wrong question with what do I think
of that? What did you think of Dillingham saying we
have seven hundred thousand alumni nobody.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Can give him money? Hey, what I thought of it?
This is how it is.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
He's he's not lying, he's I appreciate the guy's honesty, like.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
Yeah, we need money.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Yeah, I know. I liked it, And I like that
he's staying there. You know what me?
Speaker 1 (30:10):
I like coaches that stay at the spot, like, especially
for a program like Arizona State, you finally get hope
for the first time since you know Jake Plumber and
then this's gonna go coach Michigan. Like, I love that.
But I'll be honest. As he's going through that, part
of me is like, this is actually sad, Like.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
This is sad.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
This is what has come to.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
Yeah, that you've got this guy who's obviously a good
coach and he's just going, hey, can someone stroke a
twenty million? Because he's right, because you could transpose everything
he said in say Minneapolis in it right, and I
think they're ad or somebody just said he goes look,
we all want a twenty million dollar guy, but we've
also got seven seven hundred thousand alums. Yeah, if they
all just chipped in a little bit, that goes a
long way, because that has been the Gopher approach, right
(30:51):
burns e. Like Derek's even said that, like with the
season ticket holders for Dickey Town athletes, of all of
them just jump in on a basic membership that really
helps you out.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
But I'm just sitting there and I'm thinking, and and.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
This guy, he's got the world by everything, and he's
in front of a podium for like the fiftieth time
now he's finally coming back. His assistants are getting paid,
you know, pretty much like Indiana's are like eleven million
dollar salary pool. And he's just horing himself out for
a twenty million dollar check that, by the way, they're
going to also need like next year and the year
after that and after that and the year after that
and the year after that. And so I don't know
if I if I've just been traveling a lot lately,
(31:22):
and he caught me at a week moment, but I said, yeah,
he's right. PJ said the same thing two years ago. Right,
will be a triple A team if we don't step.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Up, my nancy.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
But part of it is kind of sad that that
is what they're doing because pro sports, I agree with
the coaches. Pro sports don't have to do that like
everybody has. And I know baseball is different and college
is basically baseball, where you're going to have the Dodgers
and you're going to have the Rays and where do
you fit in in between? It's like Tim Conley's not
(31:49):
worried about who's going to stroke a twenty million dollar check,
right Like he knows a Rod and Lourie are going
to spend the cap and that's and then it's about decisions.
I don't know, it just kind of hit me weird
that it was a great SoundBite. It's obviously getting a
lot of run, but it kind of sucks that that
is what it's about.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
Do you know what they're what are they spending on
on rep share the Yeah, they're not spending the full
Do you think they're spending the full thing?
Speaker 2 (32:13):
Sure? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (32:14):
You think you think all all every powerful.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
Bitch at Arizona State who just ponied up to support
Kenny Dillingham. I'm sure a part.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Of those negotiations was we're.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
Going to give you all you can in the repshare amount, or.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
At least doing what everybody else is doing the seventy
five percent.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
I may not do the full twenty but they're giving
football the fifteen percent.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
We're in Phoenix, I mean we should be saying the
same thing we're in Minneapolis, Like there's there should be
a lot of money there to go find and to
go mine.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
And it doesn't have to be a twenty million dollar'd
be great. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
I think Joe Polad should do it and rewrite his legacy.
I don't know if I've said that. I think Joe,
you speak.
Speaker 4 (32:52):
About Joe that way and when we are now a
Tom Pohlad Twins organization, Okay, that's.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
What I mean.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
He's been kicked out of his family business. You want
to rewrite your legacy, Joe. Dickytownathletes dot Com.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Baby, I love it.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
Be the one loved poll at in the in the
whole area. How about Christmas for that family? By the way, it's.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Gonna be awkward, damn Like Succession.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
If if you've watched Succession the show, love that show.
It's a great show.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
But that's all I'm imagining and just the family bickering
in the valley. But I think someone needs to get
to Joe and say, hey, you want to rewrite your legacy.
You want a statue like Carl and Eloise have outside
of Target Field. We can put one in front of
Huntington Banks Stadium if you would just help us keep
some players and you know, get us to the Rose
Bowl one of these years.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
I'm telling you that should be his play, not me.
Speaker 4 (33:40):
The Twins fan in me, not me.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
Let's see it got a couple of minutes here because
we should fly. I know everyone's bitter about here. I'm
gonna paint it this way to let you know my thinking.
Everyone's mad about Tulane and James Madison. You know obviously
they're not one of the best twelve teams in the country.
To me, that's completely irrelevant. I've said it for years.
You have to give.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
If you're gonna ask people, we're just talking about money.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
If you're going to ask people to invest and spend
and do all these things, you have to give them
something to play for. You have to give them at
least the illusion of something to play for. And I
don't know if it's a thing where we do a
group of five national championship one day is I know
everybody's mad about the teams that were left out because
of the teams that were in and obviously James Madison
and Tulane it weren't super competitive in their games. But
(34:26):
as I was coming home from Des Moines this weekend,
I got off my plane and at my gate there
was a plane going to Richmond, Virginia on Sunday night,
and the entire boarding area was James Madison fans that
were making probably I presume, I don't know if they
went Eugene to Salt Lake to Minneapolis out of Richmond,
or if they went Portland right to Minneapolis to Richmond,
(34:49):
didn't ask for the itineraries had to get to Phoenix
like ten minutes later. But that to me is why,
like those fans and those people in that school just
got ride of a lifetime, and I don't at the
expense of Notre Dame getting their five hundredth crack to
do it. I'm sorry, I'm taking James Madison, That's what
(35:09):
I'm doing. So I don't know how you guys feel
about it, but they're going to expand it and more
power forwards are going to be able to get in there.
But I have no problem with the group of four
is getting in.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
I just don't.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I think you got to give people something to strive
for and play for, and I will. I'm sorry that
the first weekend wasn't that competitive. Wait till wildcard weekend
in the NFL. You're probably going to see the same thing.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
So I just thought, I agree.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
I like, okay, you didn't have it's not the twelve
best teams in college football. I think that's pretty obvious
right when you're allowing but I I just called it
the bracket from last year. Notre Dame beat Indiana in
the first round by ten points. Ohio State beat my
beloved involved by twenty five points. Yep, Texas beat Clemson
(35:58):
by fourteen points. These are first round games.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (36:04):
So even if we get Power two matchups, there's there's
a good chance you're gonna see a blowout, right, So.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
It's going to expand we know that.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
But I'm I'm fine, I agree with you, Uh, Guardia,
I'm fine with given spreading this out so we're not
just seeing the big.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
Ten versus SEC Invitational, and.
Speaker 5 (36:32):
That's basically what it The people that are arguing this
is basically that's what they want, right. It wants to
be the Big Ten versus the SEC. I can live
without having six Big Ten teams and six SEC teams
squaring off.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
You know, So is it the best twelve?
Speaker 2 (36:49):
No?
Speaker 3 (36:50):
But guess what. I watched the games. It didn't.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
It didn't.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
I didn't even though it was a blowout. I knew
it was going to be a blowout.
Speaker 5 (36:57):
I watched the games and so, and it's going to
expand and more teams, more of the blue bloods are
going to get in there.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
So what do you think, Burnsy before we head out?
Speaker 4 (37:09):
Yeah, I have no issue with it, especially as we
continue to see the Notre Dame situation continue to get
more and more interesting. Since we last even recorded where USC,
Notre Dame is not going to be on the schedule
because USC wanted to play it early in the season,
Notre Dame wanted to play it late in the season,
and now they scheduled BYU, which was the team they
(37:31):
were supposed to play in one of the most prestigious
Bowl games. Now the pop Tarts Tarts. Nothing against pop Tarts, yep,
but seemingly I think there's going to be continuing as
you saw right there with USC and Notre Dame. I
think you're going to see more and more power two
teams look at Notre Dame and say, why would we
play you with the way that you continue to act.
(37:53):
Just join one of our conferences. And the thing I'm
going to be curious to see with it is, I
don't know what the ratings were for Notre Dame on
NBC and Peacock this year, but if they go down,
and I wonder if Notre Dame here in the next
couple of years is going to be forced to play
either a Big ten schedule, forced to join a conference
to be able to solidify itself as what they believe.
(38:15):
I know, home Fighting Irish in South ben Indiana thinks
there should be a college football playoff team. Well, then
play an actual schedule, because that's not the ACC anymore.
Speaker 5 (38:23):
So.
Speaker 4 (38:24):
I have no issue with James Madison or anything of
that nature. Now, do I think you're going to see
some better games this weekend? Sure, But whether it's the
NFL Wildcard weekend or as Chip laid out last year's
first round of the College Football Playoff. Between even his
falls in Ohio State law it's happen. It's still a sport,
still human beings on the field. But now you're going
to be able to see this weekend. I think some
(38:45):
pretty good.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
Games, I hope so, and we will talk about all
of them next week on the Pair and a Spare.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Have a merry Christmas, everybody. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Burnsey will see you tomorrow. We will see you at
the very luxurious Camelback JW.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
Marriott and to see that lovely smiling face of yours
and our listeners.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Yeah, merry Christmas.
Speaker 5 (39:08):
There.
Speaker 1 (39:09):
I will hopefully not be in concussion protocol from smacking
my head on this bottom bunk again or tearing my
achilles playing pickleball out in the backyard, but we will
see it, Jacks. But sometimes you got to put the
kids in their place a little bit here, so we'll
be doing that all right. We'll see all you guys later.
(39:31):
If you're coming down, please say hi. There's a soda
social after the game on Christmas, the day after Christmas.
There's nothing before the game. The soda social is after
the game. So hopefully maybe we'll see some people out
there and we will talk to you next week on
the pair and a spare podcast
