but don't let your passion die before.
Speaker 6 (01:58):
Good morning and welcome to Peace to you from Peace
Lutheran Church in Arvada, Colorado. There's a yearning in all
of us to do good. Jesus pointed out that if
a juke can help a Samaritan, then we too can
help one another, regardless of race, creed, or color. Meeting
them where they are and showing them the power of
(02:18):
the helping hand and living water. Just one person can
make a difference. Now here's Pastor Paulison.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
I was listening a couple weeks ago to a podcast
an interview with Jason Alexander. Jason Alexander, you probably know
him better as George from Seinfeld, and actually Jason Alexander
is not even his real name. He had changed his
name from his original name because he wanted to just
(02:49):
kind of start over because of his beginning part of
his life. He said, when he was six years old,
three things happened that changed the trajectory of his life forever.
One was his uncle passed away from a heart attack.
His uncle, who he was the closest to. Second, his
father had a disease, a heart disease, and it took
(03:12):
months for him to recover. Third, you see, he live
in New York City. He was a latch key kid.
He come home every day from school and go into
his parents' apartment's family's apartment. One day he came home,
he opened the door and everything was gone, everything, clothing, appliances, everything,
(03:33):
And he sat down on the floor of the apartment
thinking that his family had abandoned him. And he didn't
know until after his mom and dad got after work
and came home that what had happened is there have
been people who had been casing him and following them
for weeks, and they came that day in mover's outfits
and literally took everything in that apartment. I was a
(03:56):
counselor at this camp in upstate New York, well Camp Pioneer.
In first summer I went and stayed at this camp.
Well one night we had these teenagers there and they
were all older teens, and a seventeen year old boy
was there who had been kind of forced to go
there by his parents, and he said to me that
(04:17):
one life cannot make a difference in this world. With
all the billions of people in this world, one person
cannot make a difference. And everything inside of me, I've
got to tell you, rose up and got angry, and
(04:39):
if I'm honest with you, there is truth that I
have partially lived my life and served in my ministry
to prove that wrong, to prove that one life could
make a difference. I'm not talking about just a Martin
(05:03):
Luther King or Mother Teresa. There are those people that
stand out that have much broader effects on the global world.
But I'm talking about right where you live and right
where you are. Ten years ago, I got challenged by
(05:23):
God to leave the ministry and leave my church to
go to a third world country. And most of you
know the story, and it's in the book. If you
haven't to a country that I never wanted to go
to too dangerous, too poor, and I knew my heart
couldn't stand watching kids die. Now, I take people from
(05:45):
around the country, have taken thousands of people down with
me on trips, and I have one mantra that I
live by. My goal in my ministry is to wreck
your life the ordinary. Now, I got to tell you,
when you go with me on a mission trip, you
have to go through six weeks worth their training because
(06:08):
I got to teach you the culture. I have to
help you start thinking like a missionary. I have to
help you understand what's going on where you're going to
be immersed for the next week or two. And when
I first say this, people kind of chuckle and laugh. Now,
I gotta be honest with you. I saw this from
Bill Bright, but I'm being very honest with this. See,
(06:29):
when you go with me on a missionary trip, my
goal is to take you to one of the poorest
parts of this world, one of the most destroyed parts
of this world. Live with me for a week or two,
and pray that God changes your life so dramatically that
you can't go back to the ordinary, that you're stretched
(06:51):
so far that you never be the same. Now, listen,
I'm not saying your life has to be wrecked like mine.
You're not called to go there full time. And to
be honest with you, I have no desire for you
to have to have the images that I live with
daily in my mind that I've seen in your mind.
(07:15):
And I realize your call may not be to these
various parts of the world. See I have another mantra
that says, give me your volunteers and I'll give you
back missionaries, and that I take you that part of
the world and for two weeks you spend with me
and I breathe into you daily. What is God doing
(07:36):
in your life? What is God showing you? What does
God challenging you to I want you to see that
God is challenging something inside of your heart to stir you,
to move you to reach out in the world. See
here's one of my goals. My goal is to convince
you that your life matters to God, God and of
(08:00):
this world. That you have a calling, not just I,
but you have a calling in your station in life
to make a difference in this world. That you are
baptized into immersed into God, so that God could live,
operate and move through you in whatever way he chooses. See,
(08:30):
there's a passion. This is a passion that I've had
since I was young. But one of the things, and
especially older, I've come to realize, is we kind of
think that passion belongs to youthfulness and it doesn't. Passion
is that inside of us. It's that burning desire to
(08:53):
make a difference in the world. Now, a lot of
us have that. A lot of the city here listening online.
You have this desire. You want your life to count
for something, You want your life to be used for something.
And believe me, I gotta tell you, I'm not talking
about some age span. I've taken people from fourteen to
(09:17):
eighty four to Haiti and watch God use them. You
want you to do at eighty four, in a country
where the men average lifespan is sixty years old and
a woman's average lifespan is sixty two, you come to
be a grandma or grandpa to our kids, our orphans,
(09:39):
because they've never had one. I tell them, I don't
even need you to work. I'll put you in an
air conditioned building and all you do is let them
come on your lap and read to them and show
them how much you love them and why you're there.
I want to take you to story in John chapter four.
(10:01):
We read part of it a few minutes ago. I
want to pick it up at verse five. So Jesus
came to the city of Samaria called Sigar, near the
parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
And Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from
his journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was
about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria
(10:23):
to draw water, and Jesus said to her, give me
a drink, for his disciples had gone away into the
city to buy food. Therefore, the smart woman said to him,
how is it that you, being a Jew, asked me
for a drink, since I am a smart woman, for
Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and
said to her, if you knew the gift of God,
(10:46):
who says to you give me a drink, you would
have asked him and he would give you living water.
Let me set this up for you. Jesus is traveling
with his disciples, and it says in verse four that
he had to pass through Samaria. The actual truth is
he didn't have to pass through Samaria, in fact, because
(11:08):
Jews did not want to interact with Samaritans. What typically
happened is the Jews had another pathway around. It was longer,
but that's the one they typically took. So why does
it say he had to pass because there was a
God ordained moment here, because God wanted him to be
(11:30):
in this location. And it says that Jesus came to
a well. And I got to tell you, there's two
wells near the city of Sicard. There's two wells and Jesus.
Jesus goes to the furthest well away. Now it says
that he is physically exhausted. Now in the Greek, I
gotta tell you, this is one of the times that
you see Jesus being very human, because the Greek it
means that he's wiped out. It's one of the few
(11:53):
times it says that Jesus has nothing left inside. So
he sits down to tells the disciples, you go into
the city and let me be here. So they leave.
Now it's in the afternoon and a woman comes to
this well. She had a bad rep. She didn't want
(12:18):
to go to the well in the morning because if
she showed up, everybody be talking about her, everybody be
pointing fingers at her. Everybody knew her story, and it
wasn't a good one. In fact, everybody had given up
on her, never thought that she could mount to anything.
And the reason she stayed away from the well is
(12:40):
because she didn't want to be the center of everyone
else's attention. So Jesus is sitting by the well. She
goes to the father's well, so if somebody does come out,
they're going to go to the closer one. So she
goes to the well. It's called the Well of Jacob,
and Jesus is sitting there. Now she's probably approaching. She
sees a man and he's a Jew. She wants nothing
(13:04):
to do with anybody, so why does she go up?
Because she probably thought he's a Jew, he won't speak
to her. That's typically what happened in these days. She
gets there, she starts getting her water, and Jesus says,
I thirst. Now she shocked. What's the Jewish guy speaking
(13:26):
to me? Why is saying something to me? And she
even says why, And he said, if you knew the
one who was asking you for water, you would ask
him for the living water that literally leaps up inside him.
(13:46):
And I gotta tell you, the word leap here is
written twice. There's only two other times in the Bible
this word is used. And it's an axe and he
acts three and acts fourteen, and it's when it said
the two healings occurred, and after they were healed, they
jumped up, they left up. And what Jesus is saying,
just like these crippled people leapt up to walk again.
If you knew how much I could change your life
(14:09):
and bring fulfillment to the deepest parts of your soul,
you would ask me for living water and everything would change.
She didn't really know what to do with this Jewish guy,
so she changes the conversation. She kind of changed the
conversation about worship. You Jews say we have to worship
(14:31):
in Jerusalem. We say we worship here on the mountain,
which is right. Jesus talks with her a little bit
about worship, but you know that wasn't a real issue.
Do you know a lot of times in the Bible,
when people ask Jesus a question, he doesn't answer it.
He doesn't He instead goes to the heart of the issue.
(14:56):
He said, you've been married four times and the man
you're living with right now isn't even your husband. You
want to feel like you're exposed. You want to feel
like you're just out there. This guy is reading my mail.
He knows everything about me. So what does she do?
She does the same thing that you and I would do.
She changes the topic and that's when she goes on
(15:17):
the discussion of worship, and it's still not the right one.
She met a man who told her everything she had
ever done, and it changes everything about her because her
life mattered to God, and Jesus wanted her to know
(15:39):
in that moment, does she matter to God? Years ago,
actually before I started mission experience in Haiti, I went
off and down to Katrina, I mean to New Orleans
after the Katrina flood, to help them rebuild the city,
(16:00):
training the people to go down there with us, and
we'd walk around the neighborhoods during break time, and if
anybody's neighborhood, we would just offer to pray with them.
And in the training I would do kind of put
my volunteers in some position where they'd have to figure
out what to say. And I said, well, what happens
if one of these people come up to you and say,
(16:21):
where was God when my fill in the blank drowned
during Katrina? Where was God when my loved one? And
we're trained to say was not give an answer because
we don't know, But we do know that right now,
in this moment, God loves you so much that he
(16:43):
took this person who took time off of work and
paid to come down here to be here so that
you would know God knows where you are, and God
knows what's happening in your life.

Speaker 5 (19:58):
God loves you for you here today for those online,
it's saying that your life matters to God. Do you
know that every corporation puts a value on your life?
Every major corporation puts a value on your life. It
(20:20):
said there's about eight billion people now in the world.
Coca Cola says they assume you're gonna drink one coke
at least every four days, so they put a value
on your life over a lifespan. Your work to them
six thousand dollars. So next time you pop the top
(20:40):
of a coke for a dollar, just think of it
as an investment on the money you're gonna pay them GM.
If you're a lifetime customer of GM, your life to
them is worth two hundred and forty three thousand dollars.
If you're a technical user of a computer, your value
(21:03):
to those computer companies is about forty thousand dollars. A person.
If you're not a tecto, it's worth about twenty thousand
dollars a person. They're all counting the costs of your life.
Are you missing the value of your own life to
(21:25):
this world? To the people around you? The amazing thing
is at the end of this story, this woman simply
goes in and she goes into the town. Now, please
understand the culture this day. No one went near this
(21:45):
near this woman because of a reputation. She was unclean,
she was dirty. How does she do it? You ever
go up to somebody who just won something or had
a life changing experience and realize that when you talk
to them, their eyes changed, their eyes sparkled. There was
something deep inside and that was alive, and you wanted
(22:08):
part of it. When this woman came back into the city,
everyone knew everything had changed with her. They saw on
her face. And one woman, one outcast woman that the
world had given up on, changes the life of others. See,
(22:34):
you and I have a story to share. You and
I have a story, a mission experience we went to
with the darkest place of this world. And one insider
in the US government just recently said to me, probably
one of the most dangerous places in the world right now,
(22:58):
and we rescue orphans and suffering children. Now we are
cradle to career. Now what that means is we rescue
kids and we don't adopt out. We have chosen a
different path. And the reason is because people come in,
they adopt, they take the best and the brightest. And
(23:19):
I'm not against adoption. I think the adoption is great.
But for there, we decided for us that when we
take a kid in, we're gonna raise them, They're gonna
have a family. I just last or four weeks ago,
was in Haiti and I'm standing in front of orphans
and I said, you know, the world has given up
on you. They say you have no family. You know, mother,
(23:40):
no father, no brothers and sisters. And I said to them,
but you are not orphans because this is your family.
These kids around you, they become your brothers and sisters.
We raise them for eighteen years, we train them, we
equip them, we provide for them. God washed you in
(24:02):
the waters of baptism.
Speaker 3 (24:04):
He redeems you.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
He saves your soul. You take a message of God
and pay out on a Roman cross to give you life.
He's redeemed you he sets you free, but you've also
been set free to be a blessing in this world
right here, right now. It may not be there, maybe
in our vaut of Colorado, it may be in this church.
(24:32):
It's time to step out of the pew and step
into the story that God has for you. It's time
for you to step into what God is doing in
this world. Emperor Julian, into the three hundreds, decided he
(24:53):
was going to kind of put life back into the
worship of the Empire of Rome and all their gods.
The problem with all these people called Christians. Now we're
making a difference, and this quote, he actually is going
to call Christians pagans or atheists because they didn't believe
(25:17):
in the religion of the Empire. But Julian, let me
get to this, says this atheism, the Christian faith has
been specially advanced through the loving service rendered as strangers
and through their care for the burial the dead. It
(25:38):
is a scandal. There is not a single Jew who
is a beggar, and the godless Galileans care not only
for their own poor, but for ours as well, while
those who belong to us look in vain for help
that we should render them. The Emperor looked at the empire,
and so one of the biggest problems we have are
(25:59):
these as Christians who are changing everything, who are not
only taking care of their own people, they're taking care
of ours as well. Now I'm gonna get a little
personal here. I get to leave after this though. It's okay.
(26:20):
I know we live in a divided country. I know
that we live in a country that wants to fight
each other. But you're calling Jesus christ Is to a
higher authority. It's to a higher authority in this world.
You are called to be reconcilers. You're called to be
(26:44):
the message of redemption. You're called to be above that
and be the people of God who people stand back
and are all because you love everyone, because you're making
a difference in this world, because you exist. One of
my favorite Old Testament versus is this one first Chronicles
(27:06):
twelve thirty two. The men of Ishkar who understood the
times and knew what Israel should do. What is saying
is they understood the socio political, economic, what was happening
in the empire in which they lived, and they devised
a strategy on which they should go in. They read
(27:27):
the times, just like you and I should do to
make a difference in this world. Some of you right now,
the Holy Spirit's proud in your heart and you can
feel it. I'm not even asking you to go to
Haiti with me, even though I've taken hundreds and thousands
(27:47):
of volunteers, I can't even take you there with me.
So this is not about you coming on a mission
trip with me. Maybe it's going on a mission trip
somewhere else. Maybe it's just stepping to be a leader
in this congregation. Maybe it's you stepping up into that
you've always had a desire a heart for something and
(28:08):
you haven't done it yet. Maybe that it's time, and
then you need to read it. You see, we need
to begin to view our lives as a short term
mission trip. It says in Peter Peter writes that you
are aliens and strangers in a foreign land. Paul writes
and Philippians that your citizenship is in heaven. You're only
(28:30):
here for a small time. And guys the older, I
get to realize how little time I have left. But
I want to make every single minute cow I want
every minute to make a difference in somebody's life. I
want to impact you for the kingdom. I want to
(28:50):
change the whole way that you view the world and
you realize the God of the universe, who redeemed you,
has a call for you in a place, for you
to serve one life, one call to fulfill his mission.
(29:17):
God is actively inviting you to participate with him. God
is granting you an invitation to get involved. If some
of you have had that burning desire and a passion
for your life to count for years, it's time to
step up. It's not a sin for your passion to
(29:41):
die with you, but don't let your passion die before you.
In Jesus' name, Amen and.

Amen, thank you for joining us.
