(00:05):
Welcome back Daily, take a chumbraseJohn Janssen with you here on a Wednesday,
Let's set out to the Gambler hotline. Joe Tansy going to join us.
Be sure to read him across thebroad dot com Jay Tanzy nine to
zero. Now, Joe, beforewe dive into this sweet sixteen conversation,
I have to ask you a PhiladelphiaUnion question because we do have some breaking
news. Uh, cave On,how do you say his first name?

(00:29):
Cavin? There be cool if itwas Cavon. Anyways, Cavin Sullivan is
an absolute beast. He's fourteen yearsold, younger brother of Quinn Sullivan.
His brother's playing pretty well too.His brother is playing really well if you're
checking out the quads Quadzilla apparently.So. The news is is that Cavin
Sullivan now will join Man City atthe age of eighteen. He's fourteen now.

(00:54):
I never expected to see him playin the Philadelphia Union uniform. I
know he's playing for Union two.I don't know. I just thought,
Okay, he's gonna sign, he'sgonna go across seas whatever it may be.
Didn't know that there was some agenonsense that they have to deal with.
Anyways, long question here is willwe see young Sullivan in a Philadelphi

(01:15):
uniform before he joins man City atthe age of eighteen. Yes, But
I think we need to focus onthe key thing here. He's fourteen years
old. I think we do that. I'm not talking this year. I'm
not talking this year. What aboutnext year though? When he's fifteen,
Well, kid's ridiculous. What I'mabout to say, it's gonna apply exactly

(01:42):
that next year too. We didthis thing in soccer right where if you're
the next big thing, we haveto hype you up, and it's our
job to hype you up. Andif you don't live up to expectations by
the time you're what seventeen, you'rea bust. And it becomes I mean
really, just like, where's thesekids down? And look, I think

(02:07):
the hype is definitely deserved, rightManchester City's on him and some people have
called him the most talented player inthe world at his age. But I
think we also need to kind oftake a step back and do realize,
like, he is fourteen years oldand there is a ton of pressure that

(02:27):
has been heaped on this kid forat least two years. I mean,
I've heard Jim Curtin mentioned his namemultiple times in the last few years.
This isn't just the thing that justpopped up. So it's hard, right,
because you want to see the besttalent come through and you want to
see them play in Philadelphia. Buthe's also fourteen years old playing a rapidly

(02:53):
potentially playing in a rapidly evolving MajorLeague Soccer and Quin Sullivan his brother who
just turned twenty today. I mean, how long has he been with the
team. Yeah, it feels likehe's been there forever, and it's taken
multiple years, not just on thefirst team roster, but playing in MLS
to get to that point. Imean, how much hype did we put

(03:15):
around Brendan Aaronson, Well, Paxtonwas even worse. We put so much
hype around Paxton, right, Yeah, and unfortunately Paxton did didn't get a
chance to to play a lot offirst team that's re union. But with
Brendan, I mean, hell,we the second he signed a first team
contract, the load of expectation weput on him were insane, right,

(03:39):
because you have to be the nextbig thing, you're just prodigy all this
stuff, and it took him awhile and it's still taken him awhile the
just to other leagues in Europe,so like, and it's so hard for
me, Like it's exciting without aquestion, right, But yeah, I
think we we we we lose theperspective on this in like the real world

(04:02):
so fast. Right, We're spendingmultiple hours of our day talking about a
fourteen year old. He's fourteen yearsold. I mean, think of where
you were when you were fourteen yearsold, just exactly. Yeah, but
I'll push back. Come on,I don't know where this is coming from
because I'm not talking about them allhours. I'm just trying to find out,
Like what I mean, there arecertain people stalking out the Union two

(04:27):
games just specifically to talk to him. Well, I would say it's exciting
that this kid who's being discussed withthe top clubs in the world, the
Union player like Brendan Erison can't sniffthis kid. Let's just be honest.
The clubs that we're talking about hereare the best of the best. Yes,

(04:47):
this kid has come up to theranks. We can't talk about this
kid enough. I agree with everythingyou're saying in terms of behind and how
exciting is but like, what happensif you were to did they threw one
in the MLS s field tomorrow? But they won't and they shouldn't, and
they like I trust Jim Curtain,I trust him. I trust Jim Curtin

(05:10):
more than anybody to handle this theright way. I can. I agree,
but I can name about twenty fivepercent of MLS teams that would do
that. Okay, that's fair, but we know how Jim operates, right,
And that's what it's like. Iapproach it with caution because I mean,
he's gonna play for us next year. No, I asked that.

(05:31):
I wasn't asking if this kid's gonnawin the Golden Boot or anything, but
I think it's what I didn't thinkwe were gonna see Union Soccer podcasting like
a week, so this has beenlike what okay, But we did the
same thing with Freddy I do rightagain. Freddie Adu wasn't being discussed as
Manchester City and and and Byron Munichor yeah look Barcelona, you name it.

(05:57):
He was. Come on. Alot has changed since Freddie you do
It feels like this is something different. I'm not saying I'm not saying he's
gonna be bad I'm not gonna sayhe's gonna be a boss. I'm just
saying, like, let's let thekids live his life, and like if
he's can you get to continue toprogress in soccer and get better. It's
gonna be awesome to see him developon the field. Like Jim Curtin preached

(06:20):
the exact same message at the startof the season, Like he is fourteen
and he's done this with a lotof the products that have come through,
which, to your point, Ithink is a great reason why the union
are well equipped to handle a situationlike this that they're gonna let him.
They're gonna let him live his life, not put the leaps and bounds of

(06:41):
expectation that everyone on the internet hasput on him. Like it's I'm not
saying he's got a bad head onhis shoulders. I'm just saying, like,
relax a little bit. Let thekid be He's signed the contract.
Is that is that? Joe?Let me let me ask is that for
today? Is that really for today? Come on, man, this was

(07:02):
just came out. Why are youI actually do I actually do that?
That's not for today? I knowI actually do that for a single because
this isn't something that happens in Americansports, though, is approved to play
for the Philadelphia Union, and youguys are like, don't talk about it.
No, it's not to talk aboutit, but it's it's what are

(07:24):
the experts, like, what shouldwe expect from a situation to play out
like this? I think that ismy question years old because he's being discussed
with the top club in the world. He is going to sign with one
of the clubs that have the mostmoney with Man City, that have continuing
to compete for the EPL Championship,if not more Champions League and so forth,
and like, you guys are like, hey, let's put not put

(07:45):
too much pressure. So it's notokay. So I'll ask this question then,
and from maybe a different anglers perspective, what are the chances Joe that
he actually does make Demand City andhe's good enough to make the Man City
by the time he turns eighteen?Like, what do these situations because it's
a fourteen year old A lot andchange from fourteen to eighteen years old.
You know, maybe you don't developthe right way, or we've seen this

(08:07):
with I think the best example iscollege kids when in eighth grade, when
they get a scholarship. We haveheard those stories before. They're the weirdest
stories where Elane Kiffin is given aneighth grade kid a scholarship to be a
quarterback. And I think the onlytime we ever heard that, I think
it might have been Sills who endedup actually being a wide receiver in college
and a wide receiver in the NFL. Like things change so much, so
what are the chances, like whathave been previous cases before to show that

(08:31):
he is now at fourteen years old, actually going to make it to Man
City by eighteen and he's going tobe a man saying you, look,
it's not one hundred percent that's right. No one's going to tell you that,
right, Like it really comes downto individual and like how everything is
is built up. I mean,I'll give you the perfect example that's going
on in soccer right now is Enrichthe Brazilian who's seventeen years old, is

(08:58):
doing the exact same thing and issigned for Real Madrid. Like he's playing
for the Brazil national team. Everythingand anything about him seems like he's on
that trajectory. He's going to playfor Real Madrid for a long time and
all that that is the best casescenario, right, and we've seen that
happen. I mean, look atall the like eighteen to twenty three year

(09:18):
olds that are thriving at big clubsin Europe. There's no doubt that can
happen. But there's also know theother part where how many I've seen it,
And I think I'm approaching this thiscaution because I've seen I've been in
the American soccer bubble, probably waytoo long than I want to be,
but I've seen I've seen cases likethis, so not to the Manchester City

(09:43):
signing him at fourteen extent, butI've seen cases where the player gets hyped
up when he's a youth prospect,he goes overseas, and then we forget
about him for two years and thenhe pops up somewhere and we're like,
oh, good for him, Buthe was a bust and we just we
just discarded him from everything that wedid years prior. So that's why I

(10:07):
approach it with caution because I've seenit. I'm not saying he'll be a
bus I'm saying like, it's greatfor the club, it's great for the
union. I think the union willbenefit greatly from this because if they develop
him properly, and if Jim Curtinand Ern Standard and then every Marlon LeBlanc
is the Union too, everybody developshim properly and he becomes a star at

(10:30):
eighteen years old. The amount ofyoung prospects they're going to want to come
to the Philadelphia Union because they handledthings properly, they developed these these players
properly is going to be tenfold.Like there's no doubt about it that the
spotlight on this team, it's academyand how it develops players is going to

(10:52):
grow. And this is the bigtest case. Now they've had the Aronson's,
they had Mark McKenzie, how Austintrust. It took him to that
extra stop in MLS, But wheredid his development start? Started with the
Union and he signed with Arsenal. He's never gonna play for Arsenal, but
he signed for Arsenal. Excuse me, he's playing for them in the Premier
League with Sheffield United. So Imean I would trust the Union to make

(11:16):
sure he gets to that point. And I'm not saying it's not exciting.
I'm just approaching it with caution becausehe is still fourteen and you put him
on an mls Field today, heprobably gets dominated rightfully so, but then
what does that do for like theplayer's mental health, you know, or
how he develops all this stuff. All of those things I think will be

(11:37):
handled properly by the union because they'vefocused and excuse me, they focus so
much on the player and they they'vecultivated that environment. I'm just saying,
like, there there are like humansize to this other than he just signed
for Manchester City. Hey, allI know is that's not the answer.

(11:58):
Break What was like, is thekid gonna play? Like thinking about I'd
like, I'd like see this playout of like the last week or so,
and just like, yes, it'sfantastic, but you also have to
like approach it with caution because like, this is still a fourteen year old
human being we're dealing with. Andlike the amount of pressure that is now
heaped on Calvin Sullivan is it's immense. Like everyone has been talking about him

(12:24):
for years and now this is it'sfinally here. Oh now, this is
that this is an extra magnifying lastThis is like three four times now just
highlighting cave Calvin Sullivan. This isthis, get him up, it's here,
Let's get the top club. It'llbe playing with his brother. He's
in a great situation. Jim's coachdoesn't get any better than that. Like

(12:46):
I said, Calvin and Quinn dominating, I didn't know the dang that's crazy.
Is there a chance to Yeah, there's definitely a chance that we're gonna
have two sets of brothers, Sullivan'sand Aaronson's for Team USA and yere's the
cup. That's insane. That's absolutelyinsane. That is incredible. All right,

(13:07):
look there there's there's a there isa chance. I'm not saying this
will happen because the positions and age. Oh we we already know where you're
going, Yes, we we Wegot the vibe for today. All right,
Calm down, relax expectations. Thereis a chance that six of the
eleven starters on the national BI atone point could be developed by the un

(13:28):
Geese. Wow, that's about unbelievable. That's unbelievable scenario. If the Sullivans
reach their potential, if the Aaronsonsreach their potential, and if Mark McKenzie
and Austin Trustee continue on their trajectory, you could positions in age. Of
course, it will all have toalign perfectly. But you could have now

(13:50):
a dream scenario maybe in say fouror five years where they could all be
in the mix if they continue upwards. That's why that's where I was going
with that. Be positive, PhiladelphiaUnion Soccer factory up there, baby in
Chester, that's what it's all about. Actually be the Academy and King of
Prescia just send the USA team toChester. That's the way they trained.

(14:11):
Now they're all together in Chester withthose brand new fields out there. So
you're right, all right, Look, it is exciting. I just didn't
know the rules and what's what andwhether or not this kid will have an
opportunity to get out there play forthis team, whether or not the sign
him. They could sign him tomorrowand they go play on Saturday against so
they could. They're not going to, but they could. Next year will
probably be the year that he'll ifif that's the case, then he'll get

(14:35):
in there. Do you think theymight get him up to the big club
this year if he's playing Union two? Why not? It's got a shot.
I mean a lot of things haveto fall in line for it to
happen. But I mean, maybeI'm not saying start off the bench the
way the way the Union's bench attackingoptions are going. Yeah, look,

(15:01):
you know, as far as asfar as that's concerned, right, I
didn't think he was getting See again, from my perspective, I have no
idea what I'm talking about when itcomes to this stuff. I didn't think
he was going to be playing anygame minutes except for Team USA or whatever
it is that he's under fourteen whateverit may be, under twenty one whatever.
But I thought it was like, hold up, we gotta get him

(15:24):
signed, so he's not playing anything. Then I see him catching minutes for
Union two and I'm like, okay, well he's playing. This is cool.
And now that he is signed officiallyso it's like, hey, we're
going to keep you in Union colorsuntil you turn eighteen. Yeah, he's
definitely gonna catch some minutes here.So it is it's really cool to see
he ended up doing the right thing, the right thing by allowing to stay

(15:48):
in Philly to develop, because whatMANCID usually does is they got a bunch
of feeder clubs that they could havejust said, hey, we'll sign a
pre contract when you're sixteen, comeover alone out to Belgium or whatever.
Club they want to and then whenyou're eighteen come to Manchester City that speaks
volumes about the union. Then rightif they if man City are comfortable enough,

(16:10):
hey just stay there till you're eighteen. You know you'll develop, Yeah,
franctly well also also I think dn y CFC deal had something to
do with it, right, Likenobody wanted to see that happen. That
can't be right, and of coursethey did. You know, he signs
with man City, well, theclub that they were mentioned to being lonely
with a team in Belgium because hecould play at sixteen in Belgium, but

(16:33):
you can't because of all like thewalls and everything England. He could play
until eighteen at newn City. It'sprobably Yeah, Well, I don't know
what's better for him and what's not. You know, this kid's got the
world, But that's that's kind oflike a big turning. We don't know
what's best for this kid. We'rejust outsiders talking about soccer. I want
to see him play though, atleast at least at least we're talking about
soccer. How many would want tosee? How much? How much this

(16:56):
does this boost? I like tosay tickets sells. But how much would
this boost maybe the spotlight on theunion? Now if you were when he
whenever he does next year, acouple of years, whenever it is.
I mean, how much of aspotlight would this put a man city signee
that could be on the field forthe Union? How much would that boost?
I guess the spotlight on that eyeson that I absolutely would boost it.

(17:19):
It just takes that everything we justtalked about and try to explain it
to a casual four performance, rightexactly. Yeah, they'd be like,
what the hell are you talking about? Oh god, yeah, no shot.
Yeah. So like that's that's thewhole thing, where like if you
promoted it, hey in like twoyears, Hey here's this sixteen year old
phenom. But wait, he's notgoing to play for us after next year

(17:42):
because I think they said there's aclause that if he develops past the MLS
level that although can take place. So yeah, there's like all sorts of
which is why it probably took forthis done. But like, yeah,
that's the hard part, right becauseif you go to like you try to
explain this situation that somebody at thebar, they'll be like, well,

(18:03):
let's move on and talk about nothingelse. Right, Well, that's what
I'm going to tell you right now, let's get on over to Sweet sixteen.
I no, look, I getit. I understand like you are
the one that's invested in this. You've been paying attention to it from the
day one. I just see akid with a blonde you know, duye
job who is balling for I don'tknow. I thought this was pretty cool.

(18:27):
The MLS Next, which took placein Austin in twenty twenty three,
and I see these baby Union kidsjust out there looking like a FIFA video
game, and it was so cool. And at the top of the chart
is this kid who is Quinn Sullivan, who's a badass in his own right,

(18:47):
his young brother. Well, youknow, like I'm fired up now.
I didn't like, Like I seeTanawad's tweet in front of me,
Joe where it's like, I didn'tthink that this had a chance in hell
at happening. I thought it wasUnion too, and he signed somewhere else
money coming in for the Philadelphia Union. Lookout another another product shipped off and
they cash in, but the fanloses. And that's the way I viewed

(19:10):
all this. I get it bigpicture, you have to understand it.
But we lose out by not havingBrandon Aronson here. We lost out by
not having Mark McKenzie here. Welost out by by not having of course
Paxton what we're discussing and who elseknows what's rolled through these academy, through
this academy over the years, andI get it. The Union are making
money and it's a great deal forthem. It would be nice to be

(19:32):
in a running on some of thesehigh priced free agents that are out there
with all this boot coool amounts ofmoney that you're getting from this talent that's
coming through your academy. I'm sureI'm singing a same tune that a lot
of Union fans are singing. Soif we can get this kid out there,
whether he produces or not, Ihope he does. It's exciting,
it's cool, and I'm fired upfor it. Of course, Union coming

(19:52):
up on Saturday two o'clock kick againstMinnesota. They got Minnesota on Saturday.
Minnesota. I'm fairly certain we justrecorded an episode a Union Soccer podcast.
So what welcome Welcome back to theI actually was going to say that I
want to get back recording Philadelphia. How about that. Now he wants back.

(20:15):
Now, now this kid signs andBrace wants to take his spot back.
He's kicking me out of the hostchair and he's going to take the
spot back. There it is.I've been waiting for that. It's like
it's like the Red Hot Chili Pepperskicking out. It's like the Red Hot
Chili Peppers kicking out the guitars thattook over for John for Shane. Now
we now John I don't know.I've said Cavin Sullivan for years. All

(20:36):
right, I don't know who whatever, the guitarist that they kicked out John
Fanshanti for Shore, I don't evenknow. I can't even remember. But
Fushanti came back and they said, yeah, you're out, go ahead,
you can take your spot back forsant alright. That was that was That
was a butcher's name. I didn'teven know. That was a great segue.
Dave Navarro Josh, Yeah, yeah, that's the guy. That's the

(20:59):
guy. That's the guy. Ohyeah, they've they just said, yeah,
thanks for your services. Button bandsanyway. What's that? Dave has
been like fifteen thousand bands anyway.Yeah, yeah, I say he hosts
like a tattoo show. Yes hedoes. Let's talk about the Sweet sixteen
because I tweeted out that we're goingto talk about twenty minutes ago, so
now I'm actually gonna come over thetop of that tweet. No, actually,

(21:21):
now we are all right, andthere's a great video. Chili Pepper's
overrated. I always thought, no, John, always come on now,
dude. I really didn't. Theyhad a couple of cool songs like years
ago, and I was just it'san iconic rock band and like they just
do the same song over and allright, let's go Sweet sixteen. John,

(21:44):
You're overrated.
