Speaker 2 (00:38):
Thursday is the first of May. Many will celebrate that
tradition by happily dancing around the may pole. It's May
Day for the Rangers. It's different. It's May Day, May Day,
May Day. We'll talk about that next. It's a DLS
Rangers podcast. Oh yeah, there was a bad loss, so

(01:00):
we'll talk about that. Yet might have been the worst
of the season. Heck, it might have been the worst
in a long time. I haven't thought about it in
those terms. We will here in a minute, Jeff and I.
It's the DLLs Rangers Podcast and we're happy to have
you with us. We're glad to be here in the
podcast studio today and we've got your comments coming throughout

(01:23):
the show. Jeff and I are here. The profits over there.
We appreciate it if you will like us and subscribe
to us, and start by doing yourself a damn favor.
Get to this thirty six dollars, die hard deal. Today's
the last day to do it, and if you do
it today, you have full Look at there, there's a

(01:43):
skipper bringing us cake. It's Pop Pop's birthday. If you're
a fan of the Cowboys Show, it's a good looking cake.
If you're a fan of the Cowboys Show, you know.
Pop Pop is our old friend Clarence Hill, who's a
baby at sixty. Just turn sixty. That's cute.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
And so I've known clar it's probably half his life,
almost thirty years. Yeah, okay, from our time together and
Fort Worth. So yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah, I probably known. I mean, you know, I was
covering the Cowboys when he first got here for Channel five,
so I've probably known him and certainly known of him
for for around thirty years too. So anyway, happy birthday
to him. Happy home stand for the Rangers, we hope,
because things didn't go well again on the road, and

(02:31):
so you know, we've got a lot to dissect and
a lot to talk about. The reality is there there
are some reasons for optimism, Jeff. Even even yesterday Bruce
Bochi was talking about after that horrifically bad loss, a
silver lining.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Uh. Yeah, you know that's what you gotta do. Uh,
you always got to keep moving forward. And you know,
there are the ten hits, and I think nine of
them came with two strikes, so you know that's that's
that's good hitting right there. You know the problem is
that they didn't come with runners on base and scoring
position and all that jazz. So there is that, you know.

(03:11):
I I poured myself a nightcap last night and I
sent a picture of it to boach'es bourbon and I said,
I made it a double for you, and then he
texted me back this morning. I drank a whole bottle.
So it's definitely a tough a tough one uh, and
a tough road trip and just an aggravating time as

(03:31):
they wait for the offense to do something. And you know,
but to his point, I guess you know, you kind
of look at this team still above five hundred at
home for seven games, so you get a chance to
clean it up, and you know the proverbials sleep in
your own bed and feel feel good, but home cook you. Yeah,
but you kind of look at the Rangers. They've played

(03:53):
nine teams so far this season. Their opponents are one
hundred and forty one and fourteen. That's uh, that's probably
and hundred and forty one and one forteen. Okay, so
their opponents are twenty seven games above five hundred. Uh,
there's only one team, the Angels, that's below five hundred.

(04:16):
They have a combined VRA those teams of three point
nine to six, so not bad. Now, the Rangers have
the ERA of three twenty two, which is better than
all their opponents that they've faced, either collectively or individually.
But then there's the non silver Lining, which is last
in runs in baseball right at eighty six and twenty

(04:36):
ninth and on base percentage at two seventy six. So
they kind of go hand in hand. You're not getting
aybody on base, you're not scoring any runs.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
The Rockies have won four ball games this year and
have scored more runs than the Rangers.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
I mean, it's it's it's just it's just terrible. And
then you go and look at the Rangers walks fifty eight,
second worst than baseball. You know, thank God for the
age on the on base and the walks. Yeah, So
it's just it's just that's where that's where it begins.
You're just not getting guys on base. Their batting average

(05:10):
isn't great obviously at two twenty five, but you know
it's it's uh like twenty fourth in the league, so
it's not like the worst. It's not great, but of
course it's so it starts with getting guys on base.
And if you're not going to get base hits, you
got to get walks. And this team's just not doing

(05:31):
that for whatever reason.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Right, Yeah, And that's it's frustrating, and it's it's hard
to explain. And then you look at things like even
on this road trip, granted they had you know, one game,
the first game where they scored eight runs in a victory.
The other victory came in a two nothing game, Jeff.
So even the wins, you're only scoring two runs, right,
and and they're the eight was the biggest, you know,

(05:53):
run total of the season thus far. So there haven't
been any of those ten twelve, fourteen, which we kind
of expected, right, We expected so much offense that, you know,
and in the past, the kind of offense that could
outslug the opponent, outscore the opponent because in the past

(06:13):
the Rangers didn't have much pitching. Now they do. But again, eventually,
like it all works in cycles and waves, and eventually
the pitching's not going to be quite this good. The
hitting has to.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Pick up, right, And you know, I was trying to
think back to like twenty three because it seemed like
the Rangers scoring ten runs every other year they did,
And so what's different from twenty three? Who is who's different? Well,
Nathaniel Lowe is not with the team anymore, and Mitch
Garver's not with the team anymore. And Garver I only
missed the first three months of the season or whatever,

(06:50):
and was a big force in the second half in
the playoffs. Lowe was kind of was good until about
September or you know, but still not quite good enough.
And know now he's off to a really good start.
Garver is still struggling. But it's just it's a lot
of the same guys. Jan Kowski played a lot that
that first half and was was good.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
It was good.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Ezekiel Duran was really really good. But you know, you
look at it, it's like, Okay, well, Josh Smith has
replaced Iran. You know, you have a combination of guys
who are playing in the outfield and playing pretty well
with light at Langford, and you know you're getting a
nice production from Dustin Harris. Unexpected I would say production
from Dustin Harris. But like a Doulas is down seekers

(07:35):
hurt as he was in the first half of twenty three.
The big difference to Symey and Simmy had a great
April and twenty three, and so did Josh Young and
so you're trying to make up for for that. Berger
has has he showed some signs a lot over the weekend.
Jock Peterson, of course did. I mean Jock had a

(07:57):
nice little series.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
It seems to have maybe got an RBI first of
the year. He got a double and a triple, got
stranded on base both times.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
But I guess my point is if twenty three is
not that long ago, and it's a lot of the
same person there.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Right, And so what you hope for then is Jake
Berger to be more like himself and ultimately right, you
think he can be offensively at least what Nathaniel Lowe
was and ideally more right, more and more power exact
power exactly, all right, And then you need Marcus Simeon
to be more like he was. Obviously he had a

(08:34):
great April and a good year, I mean a good year,
third an MVP vote, yeah, yeah, yeah, And then you
need a Dooley's right, I mean you just you know, look,
he's mercurial, right, he has ups and downs. He's that
kind of guy. But man, they just need to figure
away that's one that that's one that worries me a

(08:55):
little bit because again, he's such an emotional player and
if he's way down down emotionally, I just you know,
I hope they can figure out a way to unlock
that and get him back to his confident and you know,
and it's chicken in the egg, right he starts hitting,
He's back to the confident, uh, celebratory, infectious guy. But

(09:17):
until he starts hitting, he's not that and it's a
stark difference.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
Well and and you know we we've talked about this
with Bruce Bochi. I mean he was Adules was really
down on himself at times last year. Yeah, and it
was a it was a factor, and and you know,
maybe you start to see him chasing those situations. I mean,
he wants to be great, obviously, I'm he he loved
that postseason run. I mean, and who wouldn't love it

(09:42):
all that he did and the hero, the hero that
he became, and you know, but yeah, he needs positive results.
And uh, I just keep going back to that at
bat in the sixth inding after Peter sits triple, It's like,
just put it in play, Yeah, right, put the ball
in play. Yeah, No outs runner at third strikes out
on three pitches that were out of the strike zone. Taste, yeah,

(10:05):
and not like just off the edge, no, in the dirt.
So you know, you you wonder where he's at there.
And you know, he made the changes in the off
season and it took a little while for them to
click in spring training, and they did and you felt
really good about Adules coming in and then he had
a nice couple first two weeks, and now it's now

(10:27):
it's been back downhill. I know he won the game
last weekend against the Dodgers, but you know, you really
need your big guys to deliver, especially when Segars on
the injured list. I know it's it should be over
with this weekend Seegers, I ll stay. He'll have right
back into the lineup. I don't think they'll make him
go do any anything in Frisco. Maybe they would, but

(10:49):
he doesn't need to. He's he's proven that before. So
you know, maybe you get hole again and things start
to click. But it's just it's just I'm still stuck
on it. How it's not. It just seems impossible that
this team is as bad offensively as it is.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
It really is. It's difficult to believe. But if you know, again,
if you look for those silver linings, the fact that
Berger is looking better at the plate, the fact that
Peterson is looking better at the plate, and the one
thing we know about offense even more so than pitching.
They say it about pitching, but I think it's more
true about offense.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Jeff.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
It's it's contagious, right, and when the guy in front
of you gets a hit, you know, you come up
there and you feel better about your opportunity to get
a hit, and it just it kind of snowballs in
a very positive direction when things start going. Now, did
that happen yesterday? No, because there were ten hits and
ten men strant right or they were two for ten

(11:51):
runners and scoring perction. I mean, come on, they've got
to do better than.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
That, right. And again, they both came in the first inning,
and the first one did not score of the run,
it just advanced the run right third, So you know,
so basically they're one for nine, you know, if you
really want to and and and again it's it's the
guys that you're counting on to produce doing that sixth inning.

(12:15):
I mean, you're not counting on Nick Ahmed. He was
in the game because Young was hurt. Uh And Young
has said that he's playing today. He told Bruce Bochi
that after the game with the cut on his finger,
and Bruce Sposer was like, he couldn't. We weren't sure
if he could even bat again with the finger and
the curt and the bleeding. Okay, that's great, that's that's fine,

(12:36):
you know, And and but it was unfortunate timing because boy,
you would like to have had Josh Young up there
instead of Nick Ahmed and but still at least Simeon
put it in play, but he hit it, just got
to hit it up the middle, not to the first basement. Yeah,
and it's it's aggravating things like that, you know it

(12:57):
Really the Rangers, I'm sure they are. They're embarrassed. They've
got to be embarrassed. No, especially yeah again, m v
P runner up, he's on the injury list. I get it,
third place finisher in the m v P. He's active
World American League Championship Series m v P he he
just misses right there, you know, Josh Young in and

(13:20):
out of the lineup. I think Josh Smith might be
wearing wearing down, you know, he you know, he's just
moving around the diamond and he's going to need days off.
I think the catchers have been okay, but Jonah wasn't
wasn't very good yesterday. And you know when you're when
you're getting when your hottest hitter on the day is
Jack Peterson and Leote Taveres, who've been m i A

(13:43):
at times this year, and for Jock pretty much the
whole season. You know, you get you get contributions from them,
but then everybody else goes dry. It's just it's just
it's a head scratcher.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
It really is. And it's one of those that again,
will be out there talking to Boach about today and
he like, there's no firm, solid answers, because if there were,
they would have already implemented it obviously. So it's one
of those things. They'll keep scratching their head and they'll
keep scratching and crying. And you know this, nobody in

(14:17):
the room, mentally or physically certainly is given up on
this thing. So the offense will get better, and with
any luck, the pitching will stay as good as it
has been. We talk more about the pitching next as
we continue with the DLLs Rangers podcast, but first we

(14:38):
want to remind you about our good friends at Empire Today.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
Big weekend at the ballpark with the Mariners coming to
town and then right down the street at at and
T Stadium. It's the Lone Star Smokeout featuring barbecue and
country music, maybe the two most Texas things out there.
It's coming. It's Friday through Sunday. You get to try
barbecue from fourteen teams and decide for yourself who's really

(16:04):
the best. I mean this is these guys take this
stuff seriously. Then you get to pair that with stuff
like Texas' biggest happy hour Derby Day Kentucky Derby on Saturday,
and then the Cinco de Mayo a day early because
it's the it's the fifth on Monday the fifth, but
they're going to celebrate on the fourth as well they should.
And then country stars like Cody Jenks, John Party and

(16:25):
Midland are all going to be performing. Stay tuned to
DLS for more information. We're gonna have a VIP ticket
giveaway for each day of the Smokeout and kids ten
and undergive free tickets started to sixty eight dollars go
to lone starsmokeout dot com.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
So Patrick Corbyn tows the rubber tonight for the Rangers,
and then it's De gram of Valdi and Malley. So
this is this is a chance, right, this is an
opportunity for the Rangers to extend that ten and improve
upon that ten and three record at home. If they
had actually gotten to eleven and two, Jeff, it would

(16:59):
have tied their best thirteen games start ever, which is
you know I mean. And they were on the verge
of possibly doing that in that last game against the
Dodgers and didn't quite get it. Get it done. But
the point is they they've been really good at home
and that's but I mean back to the last segment,

(17:20):
not that much better offensively at home. I mean, there
hasn't been that much of a difference. That said, they've
pitched so well at home that they feel pretty good about,
you know, every time they walk out there, they've got
a pretty good shot to win.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
Yeah, and you know they probably feel that way right now.
You know, a three point two two overall era with
the team, and yeah, guys like grom And who looks
like he's finding it, a Valdi who's had it the
whole time, and then Maley who's just been one of
the surprises in the league. And Corbyn's been fine, he's

(17:55):
been keeping it in, keeping them in games. He has
gotten some run support. I guess if any starter can say,
you know, I've gotten a little run support, it's Patrick Corban,
you know. And but they they need to give more
to They just need more. But I'm looking forward to
to tomorrow's game. I haven't seen the Graam pitch in

(18:17):
a while scheduling conflicts and whatnot, so I'm looking forward
to seeing that. It's just it's gonna be It's gonna
be a good opportunity for the Rangers to win a
series with who they have lined up to pitch. You know,
we just saw the a so there should be some
familiarity with the guys that they will roll out of
the bullpen and the starters and whatnot. It goes both

(18:39):
ways though, because the just saw Corban and de Grom,
now they didn't see Valdi or ma or Malley, so
that'll that will help work to the Rangers advantage. I
think they the A's are still looking for a starter
for Wednesday. I think it is with j T. Gen
now on the injured list, so maybe Es tomorrow. Whatever,

(19:01):
the Rangers have a chance here to continue playing well
at home, and you know, Rufe will probably be close.
I'm guessing today it's pretty windy, very out there. You know,
just take advantage of what the game presents to you.
And you know this series guy has been tough on them,
but it doesn't mean that seeing him for the second

(19:23):
time in a week, you can't make an adjustment and
figure something out.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Yeah, that's the thing, you know, we always talk about
that that you know that you don't love to have
your picture face the opponent in this case, Corbyn, right,
you don't want him to face them because they all
saw him. Well, the Rangers pictures all saw the A's
I mean the Rangers hitters all saw the A's pictures too,
So it works both ways. The Rangers need to do

(19:47):
a better job. They know it. That's all that's going
to be talked about out there today when your offense
is that bad. And it's really amazing when you consider
where they do stand. I mean again, they've fallen into
second place because the Marin has got a victory yesterday
and have moved to sixteen wins and moved into sole
position of first place in the American League West. We'll
talk lots more about the West coming up in just

(20:09):
a minute, but the reality is the pitching has been
the is the only reason they are where they are,
and once they come around offensively, it should get even better.
You know, Jack Lighter yesterday came back from the injured
list and he had a thirty seven pitch first inning

(20:30):
and he was really having trouble landing the slider and
he kept going to it right right, and that was
an issue, and he finally realized, all right, I have
other off speed stuff. I may have to try some
of that. He walked four in his outing, and that
was largely due to the fact that he was you know,

(20:52):
kind of getting stubborn, I think, lack of a better word,
in that first inning, well, yeah.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
And if you know, if we're if we're being completely honest,
the Rangers gave away the gave away the two runs
while he was pitching. You know, he he walked three
in the first inning, and he walked one guy in.
Then in the fourth inning when the run the other
run scored, he was out of the game and scored
against Jacob Lantz. But Lighter had walked, had walked a

(21:19):
batter Ramos, and then allowed Ramos to steal second base,
just kind of losing track of the guy. And so
it only took you know, a single to get to
get him in. And you know, they gifted the Giants
two runs there. You know, everybody talks about the last run,
which was you know, a huge gift, ridiculous gift, but
those those two runs that the Giants scored were basically

(21:42):
handed to him. And so the you know, when you
talk about, you know, the Rangers pitching has been very,
very good, and it has it could have been better.
Yesterday it really could have been. You say, well, the
offense needs to help them out. You allowed, you allowed,
You'll have three runs. You shouldn't lose all the time.
And that's the truth, that's the truth. But you know

(22:05):
you've got to tighten things up sometimes too, and wider
could have been better, and and going forward, you know
this is he's had three starts now, two good, one
not so good, and and so it needs to be better.
I'm sure he'll make an adjustment, he's maybe get his
timing back whatever it is that you know in his
mechanics that was off yesterday. I'm sure that he'll have

(22:26):
another day to work through it and pick something up
and move move forward and be better. But you know,
it's not like, yeah, and this is a kind of
like sounds like I'm the the you know, attorney for
the offense. Well, it's not like the pitching was great,
you know, because because they did give away two runs,

(22:47):
you know, and then you know, the could say, oh,
well the office did enough. If Lighter hadn't done what
he did. But again he scored, he scored three times,
and you holding him oponent to three runs, you should
win the game.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Yeah, you should certain you know, absolutely, and that was
two in a row, by the way, where they you know,
they're not at it too going into the ninth inning.
It's just it's not enough offensive production. And again that
also speaks to how well the pitchers have done. I
love the fact that Jack like was able to rebound

(23:25):
from that thirty seven pitch inning and come back out
and shut him down in the second inning, and and
you know that type of thing there you see the
final numbers on the day, but the fact that he
was able to you know that that showed a sign
of growth to me and some maturity that because in
the past I think he's down on himself, and you know,

(23:47):
it's kind of a spiral.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
Right right now. Then you brought a good point. The
second inning was fast and clean, gave up I think
a hit or a walk in the I guess would
have been a hit in the third pitch around it,
and then you know, kind of ran out of bullets
that Yeah, he was at seventy four pitches in the
fourth and his first time back, they were they weren't
gonna let him go much further than that, so he

(24:12):
should be able to, you know, go ninety to one
hundred next time out, although you know he won't have
that extra day of rest, he'll be on four days
rest normal rest. So maybe maybe they don't let him
go to one hundred, but if he's more efficient, he'll
go deeper in the game, and you know, give the
Rangers a chance.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
And that's the one thing he was his first two starts.
He was a much more efficient pitcher than what we've seen,
and he was he was really in command of those games.
So you know, fingers crossed on that front, and you
know the again, then then you get to the bullpen,
and yesterday they were they were taxed. They were put

(24:53):
into a position where you know, they really had to
use use everybody pretty much the Navy, or they weren't
going to use the high leverage guys because they had
been used too much. So that's part of this juggling
act that Bruce Bochi has managed so well, and you know,
not just here for his whole career. He's considered that

(25:15):
guy who can really manage a bullpen well. And when
you consider the the fear lack of a better word, right,
the wailing and gnashing of teeth that we were all
doing headed into the season based on what they did
or did not acquire as a in the in the
Relief Corps. It's been amazing. Jeb uh.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Yeah, you know, these these they really went into the
season thinking they had three guys they wanted to pitch
the seventh, eight to ninth, and it's held. You know,
it's been Garcia Martin and Luke Jackson. Now Hobey Milner
I think is right in there, Yes, I really do.
And he's he's just been so good and and you know,

(25:58):
you saw him used to get a lefty out a
couple of times on this road trip, but then he
you know, he came back in and faced uh some
some tough right handed hitters on Saturday and and got
through them. And it's fun to watch. I like all
these guys that that throw the way he does, and
that Rogers for the Giants, holy crap, you know, dragging

(26:21):
his knuckles on the ground, he gets bloody. That's crazy stuff.
But it's fun. It's different. It's you know, you don't
see these guys anymore. And and Mike Maddox has always loved,
always love to change a pace guy like that, and
so I think that he that Milner's really somebody that
they trust again, and you know, if Garcia has to

(26:41):
be off today for whatever reason, then you know they'll
very confidently go to Hoby Milner.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Sure absolutely, he's earned that opportunity, certainly. And and again
it's left hander, so that's you know, that's also there's
not just a plethora of lefties either in the bullpen
or in that starting rotation right now.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
Yeah, you know they're they're they're with Milner. And then
Lats is a guy who but he's more of a
long reliever. So it's it's it's it's a valuable city,
valuable guy to have. You know, if you know, if
if Lats is a long guy, I know he worked

(27:24):
the ninth inning or on Saturday or in the ninth
gave up the winning hit because they were out of arms.
They weren't going to throw Garcia there. But uh if if,
if you can have two lefties who you trust to
throw in the back to go off the two rights,
and I still think that that Web and Armstronger are trustworthy.
I think Web maybe a little more so than Armstrong

(27:45):
because Web's better against left handers because of the changeup.
But you know, you're talking about five guys right there
who you can who you can swap in and out,
and you know, I would I would suspect that, well,
Jackson only threw one pitch, so I would, Yeah, I
very much suspect that he's he's ready to go today.
But I would also think that Martin and Garcia could

(28:09):
go back to back. But if not, for whatever reason,
they've got guys.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
Yeah, yeah, that's fine, and they've got options, which is
great and and that certainly helps. And that's that's that
depth in the bullpen that Bruce Bochi has you know,
cherished and has used very well over the years.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
I'm not to cut you off, but I do wonder
if they they go get an arm today because core
Maker hasn't been going deep into games, and would they
would they want just some protection there, so would they
you know, you probably would option Lats, maybe bring up
cole Wynn, who's been really really good at Triple A.

(28:49):
I don't know. That's just something that that I was
thinking about.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
And by the way, we haven't mentioned Bosley, but he's
probably down today, right I.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Would think, so, yeah, he's But Mike Mannix, Mike Maddix
thinks that the guys who had the two best springs
were Caleb Bosley and Patrick Murphy, and Murphy just unlucky
timing on an injury. He's in Arizona throwing. Uh, finally
it's taken a little longer, and they thought, but Maddix
fell and fell in love of those two guys, and

(29:22):
rightfully so. And Bosley has been great. I mean it
was pitching what was it the seventh or eighth an
seventh in You're like, he's what's he doing in the
and and.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
They needed length out of him. Yeah, I mean they
needed him and he gave him length. So uh, good
for him, and but again probably down today because he
did give them length. All right. So the American League
West is the opponent for the next two on this
home stand, and of course they they just finished with
that series against the A's uh previous to the Giant series,

(29:53):
So lots of games against the American League West, a
division that some think could be the deep in baseball.
We talk about that next. It's the DLS Rangers podcast.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
You know I talked about I was in a slump
yesterday on Sleeper, but ended up going two for three yesterday.
I'm back in the game. I'm feeling good about it. Sleeper.
You probably know them as a fantasy outlet, the leader
in fantasy sports, but they're they've transitioned into daily picks
as well. And you know, it just heightens the sports

(30:30):
watching experience. And you can do it for as little
as a dollar. Basically, what it is is, you know
you get such and such there you see right now
on the screen. If you're looking, will Lebron James have
more than two and a half block shots? If you
think he will have more than you hit more. And
you get a multiplayer, I think it's less. It's a
multiplayer anyway, Those multiplayers add up. You hit the button,

(30:52):
you decide how much you want a wager, and those
are your for lack of better words, odds. It's great
And if you use dal Rangers as your code, Sleeper
will match one hundred dollars of your up to one
hundred dollars on your first deposit.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Yeah, that'd be great and I'd encourage you to do that.
I would also encourage you to go to LinkedIn, especially
if you're hiring somebody. If you own a business, you
know that you spend pretty much every waking and sometimes
even non waking hours thinking about it. You know you're
stressing about it. You're worried about it. And one thing

(31:27):
you don't have time for often because you're trying to
make the business success is spending the proper amount of
time hiring somebody. LinkedIn Jobs takes care of that for you.
Post your job at LinkedIn jobs, and you will get
the best candidates available. And we encourage you to do
that because LinkedIn is so vast and they will get you.

(31:52):
They will find you the candidate you need. So you
go to LinkedIn dot com and you use the code
rangers and you get to post your first job free
at LinkedIn dot com with the code rangers. All right,
before we get to this American League West thing, let's
discuss because we didn't in the first segment talking offense,

(32:15):
bring up the possible, most likely possible change. Not that
we think this will happen, but it would be the
change you make if you are going to make one.
And it pairs with Rarity's question to us, would Michael
Young or Ian Kinsler be hired as a hitting coach?
Neither would even consider that job. Neither one would Michael Jung,

(32:37):
Shirley Hell wouldn't.

Speaker 4 (32:38):
No.

Speaker 3 (32:38):
I don't think kin would either. No, neither.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
They wouldn't. It's it's first of all, you know, when
you have made the kind of money those men made
when they were playing, it's not as necessary as it
used to be used to be. Guys needed to get
into coaching because they could, you know, keep a decent
income coming, and they didn't make enough to set up
their you know, their family and their kids' kids and

(33:02):
all that stuff these guys have. And what you just
have to realize, especially with Michael but Ian two, is
that they don't want that lifestyle. You know, coaches are
at the ballpark even more per day than players are, right,
and so they don't and they don't want to travel,

(33:23):
and they don't want a month away or six weeks
away at spring training. Those are the kinds of things
that and there are some even getting out of the
game today who do. But Michael Young and Ian Kinsler
aren't two of them. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
Yeah, I guess you look and see Edgar Renteria and
his role and I'm sorry Edgar Martinez and his role
with the Mariners. This Hall of Fame guy, Yeah made plenty,
Yeah yeah, I did pretty well financially, But anyway, I
don't I don't anticipate that either either one of these guys.

(33:59):
I think that's more a rare exception. You don't see.
It's kind of like basketball. You don't see great players
become coaches, you know, and if they do, they're not
very good. Like Magic Johnson tried to coach. It wasn't great.
Patrick Ewing was awful at yeah, you know, Uh, Penny Hardaway,
where is he now? He's in Memphis. They're doing okay,

(34:19):
and gosh, dang it. The anyway, Vanderbilt just fired it.
Jerry Stackee wasn't wasn't very good. And it's a lot
of work. And you know for those guys like, oh,
we have to recruit, well we I don't know. I
had to recruit, you know, and and recruit and stuff
like that. But the great ones have trouble a lot

(34:39):
of times explaining the game because it was like Ted Williams,
you know, just do what I do.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
Man Grieve talks about it all the time. Tom says,
he'd say, just hit, just go hit, and Tom's like,
I can't you know, I'm not you. And they didn't
say that in those days. You know, you didn't talk back,
but he just you know, it just seemed so ridiculous
to Ted Williams that they didn't.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Just go do what he did, right. And then Eddie
Matthews was the Rangers hitney coach for a while and
he you know, five hundred homers is a Hall of
fame and that that wasn't as successful. So, uh, anyway,
Kinsler is the he was the manager of the Israel,
of the Israeli team and the WC. I'm not sure
if he's uh.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
Yeah, have they announced that.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
I think they have maybe maybe he seems to enjoy that,
but yeah, I don't know that he's.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
But again, that's that's once uh you know, it's like
a month or every couple of years, you know. And
Durosa would probably be a good hitting coach.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
I think he's I think he's eyeing a manager. He's
destined for something. If he's going to leave the MLB network,
I think it would it would be for uh being
a manager. And he's the Team USA manager. He's got
that position locked up for the next WBC, when is
what next year? Yeah, And so I don't I don't
know that he would become a hitting coach, And I

(36:02):
don't really know, you know, you kind of think which
past Rangers players would be a hitting coach. I don't know. Yeah,
And that's just it. It's usually these guys who come
up and you know, aren't aren't great again, aren't great players.
Donnie Ecker playing the minor leagues, but he wasn't great.

(36:22):
I would not hire Mike Napoli as my hitting coach. No,
I think he's got he with the Cubs. Is he
still at the Cubs or is he out of the
game now? But the point being, with all and again
to your point, with all the money that these guys
are making, you really got to look a little further
down the down the payroll list here in the past,

(36:44):
and uh, you know, you look at guys who make
who've been known as good as good hitting coach as
Dave Magotten. He was a nice player, but he wasn't
a superstar, you know. And and uh so I sean
Sean Casey, well there there you go, sport Zone. Maybe
you'd got to get him again. You got to get
him away from the network. Uh and and a mid

(37:07):
season higher would somebody want to drop in, you know
and be like, oh, I've got to save this team.
I don't know a lot about him. Sure, generally these
things happen internally, except, of course, the one that's happened
the season was Clint Hurtle, although he had been working
with the with the Rocket, a special assistant.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
Consultant type guy. Yeah, and you know it begs the
question Skip Schumacher. Yeah again, I don't know that. I mean,
obviously Skip Schumacher is there thinking I'm a manager and
waiting in case boach if and when Boat retires, not
like he you know, is hoping for that or things
that will happen, and he's just there in case. Right,

(37:45):
But do you do us as solid? Right, if we've
decided to make a change at hitting coach or offensive coordinator,
do you do us as solid? And you slide in
there because you know, we know you can be a
great manager, so we assume you can do this job
as well.

Speaker 3 (38:00):
Yeah, but it's still it was Is that his area
of expertise?

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Who knows?

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Yeah? I mean, you know, is he more of a
fielding guy? I don't remember Skip Schumlocker win any batting titles. No.

Speaker 2 (38:14):
The reality is, though that's back to your point of
it's not the great players, like, it's a guy who
you don't you don't remember much. Somebody asked to about
Bobby Wilson. Did he not make enough? He probably did.
I don't know what Bobby made in his career. He
was in the minors a long time, he was, and
he may not have. But the point is, yeah, that's
back of a point in college. Yeah, but the point

(38:35):
is to some guys just they have that in them, right,
They're that teacher, They're that you know. Uh, Bobby Wilson
is like the pied piper. I mean, everybody on that
Rangers charter just loves the guy, follows him around. I
mean he is he is a go to guy for
all the players because he's you know, he's bridges a

(38:57):
gap age wise. I mean, and and again who knows,
but there's there's a large part of him that enjoys
doing what he's doing. Steve Bouschell when he was coaching
for for you know, when he was Banni's bench coach,
I mean, Boo had made plenty of money, but you know,
he really enjoyed doing it and enjoyed being a part

(39:19):
of the game. It was something he wanted. He had managed.
Boo of course managed Bakersfield and then did he managed
Frisco too. I think he managed Risco for a while,
so you know that was in Boo's blood. It's not
in everybody's blood. And it's harder to inspire that if
you are a zillionaire, right, yeah, yeah, it's just harder.

(39:39):
And that's not I mean, Boo is in you know,
Boom had plenty of money, but that's not where players
of his generation were. You weren't getting generational wealth in
those days.

Speaker 3 (39:50):
And then you're you're getting further away from those guys
who you know, it just seemed like a logical transition, right,
you know, and now it's it's like, man, you know
I got kids, now, yeah, you know, I've got all
this money, I got this beautiful house. I don't have
to leave because it's so nice play golf. Yeah, I

(40:12):
just I just I can't. I don't, I don't. I
don't see it.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
No, but again now now, uh and again he had
he's had some issues since that derailed this. The last
player I remember, and he made plenty of money, But
the last player I remember saying as he was departing
that he was really interested in managing was omarvs SkELL
And you know, he just had it in him, right,

(40:39):
he was just and it used to be back in
the day, almost anybody who was that leader and who
was that outgoing, gregarious type at the end of his career,
he'd be like, you have an interest in managing? You
want you want to get into coaching. Now, we hardly
ever asked like, nobody, are you kidding me? Almost all
of them No, I have no interest in coaching. So anyway, Yeah,

(41:03):
there's there's a decent little sidebar to get into as
far as what they might do. And that's a big
if if they had decided to make a change at
that offensive coordinator slash hitting coach position again having just
hired justin Veeeley. I don't know that it's two for one, Jeff,

(41:23):
if they let one go, I don't know that they
let the other go.

Speaker 3 (41:26):
Yeah, yeah, there's probably more years on one contract than
the other, but I don't know. And they don't really
disclose the terms of their coaches contracts, so I don't
know where all that stands. But I think that I
think there's still time. I do. I don't think anybody

(41:47):
wants to make the move, you know. And again it's like,
all right, so who do you go get? You know,
you think them oh, who's their minor league kitting coordinator.
That's Cody Atkinson, all right. He's worked with a lot
of a lot of the young hitters. Could be a
good fit for them. You know, the older hitters seem
to know what to do. But then when we talk
about the team, the struggles of the team, you're talking

(42:10):
about the veteran hitters. So I don't know how how
you unlock them, you know, it seems like they need to. Yeah,
and a lot of them are trust trust their routines
and their ways and have seen what they're doing work.
I don't know if that means they're resistant to change
major changes. I would assume they're absolutely resistant too. But

(42:35):
and and some of it may not be swings. Some
of it just may be approached with like a Doules.
You know, yes, he's worked on a swing in the
off season. He kind of has his own hitting guy.
But but you know, you got to pre you gotta
you still got to have a great approach to make
your swing work. And so it's.

Speaker 2 (42:54):
It's just a tough on well, and it gets even
it gets even more complicated when you consider the fact
and look, Cory's is not the problem offensively, before he
went on the injured list, he was really starting to
fire on all cylinders. But guys like him, really all
of them. Corey has it more daily this but a
different voice, right, a different hitting coach in his head

(43:18):
from the Rangers offensive coordinator and hitting coach. Not to
say he disregards what they suggest or what they tell
him or ask him to do, but the reality is
they probably don't need to ask him or tell him
to do much because he's he's so good at his routine,
his system, and a lot of these guys who have

(43:39):
been so good over the years, they just found that
right little voice that has coached them up to this point.
And they I don't know. I don't want to say
don't need coaching, but they you know, it could be
a more difficult, more complicated process. I guess if you've
got your own personal hitting coach, which most of them do.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
Yeah, they get away from him. I suspect more with exceptions,
but you know, we see Corey in the part of
the routine that he goes through with the the iPad
and how he communicates with his his hitting guy, Adules
has started to do that with his hitting guy, who

(44:20):
in the off season at least was Bobby Wood Junior's
hitting guy. So if there's something going on there, then well, okay,
that makes some sense. But you know Corey, Corey's had
his guy forever, pays him out of his own pocket,
and I think the Rangers knew that when they were
brought in him when they brought him in, and they've

(44:40):
just kind of let it go because it's worked. Yep.

Speaker 2 (44:43):
It ain't broke, you don't fix it, and generally that
swing ain't broke. So sometimes the body is, but not
the swing. All right, more coming up, it's our clean
up segment coming next, as we clean things up in
the world of baseball and have news about a former

So stored out all citynetwork dot com, all kinds of shirts.
They're great and you guys will love them and overlooked.
It's a very unique way to represent your favorite team,
the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (48:28):
Yeah, we'd appreciate you doing that. So that former Ranger
who has found a gig is really Jeff's son. I mean,
Jeff almost adopted him. Walter Pennington oh Man, Yeah, well,
you know, we gouse are the same hometown and everything.
We got the Colorado connection. He was He's from Broomfield.

(48:50):
I grew up in Arvada, so I believe they border
at some point. But he also went to the Colorado
School of Mines in Golden which is right down the
street from the last house I lived in in Colorado. Good,
good person. He's just a nice guy, rooted in his
uh in his faith, family guy. And he's got a

(49:10):
hell of a slider. Yeah, he's got to work on
the fastball. But you know, that's what happens when when
you when you sign all these veteran relievers who are
doing really, really well, you you start to chip into
your depth and when you have the DFA somebody and uh,
he hadn't pitched this year, Walt he had been in Arizona,
didn't have a spectacular spring, so he's probably working on

(49:33):
some things.

Speaker 4 (49:34):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (49:34):
He lives in the in Scottsdale, so a home game
for him. But now he's going. Now he's got to
go all the way across across the country. But you know,
you'd rather be in the be on the forty man
roster than not be on the forty man go to
you're just a phone call away, and the Orioles are
having some pitching problem.

Speaker 2 (49:52):
They are. You go to the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore one
of the best ballparks still in the game, and and
one place to play when they're playing well, which they
have been for the past few years, and they seem
to be off to a really wretched start this year.
But man, when they're when they're full of Baltimore Orioles

(50:12):
fans at ballpark is that's a fun place.

Speaker 3 (50:15):
It's a great place. It's a great place to watch
a game.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (50:18):
So.

Speaker 2 (50:19):
Anyway, good for well Walt Pennington. We're very happy for him.
Did you hear about Kevin Gossman?

Speaker 3 (50:25):
I did.

Speaker 2 (50:26):
He had a fifty seven pitch inning. It's the most
in like five years. Yeah, that's crazy. Seven pitches. Forty
is the magic number. He had fifty seven pitches in
an inning and then he freaked out and got tossed.

Speaker 3 (50:44):
Yeah yeah, well another Colorado on h Kevin Gossman. You know,
that's that's nuts. And I'd be pretty hot under the car.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
I would too.

Speaker 3 (50:55):
What about about twenty five, I'd probably are getting pissed.
But fifty and that's one of the biggest numbers I've seen.
I don't remember Rangers pitcher ever doing that. I think
the most I remember Rangers is somewhere in the middle forties. Okay,
but they usually are very proactive and we'll get a
guy out at that point. That's nuts.

Speaker 2 (51:15):
That is that is that's a hell of a number.
It's unbelievable. Yeah, and then he was so frustrated because,
you know, again he felt like he wasn't getting the calls.
And I get somewhat frustrated when fans always blame the
official right, blame the umpire, blame the referee, blame whatever,
because you know, but when a player does, when a

(51:37):
player brings it up, first of all, he probably knows
he's going to be fined, and so he's you know,
out there like right, he's put some financial you know,
some skins down on the table. And then the other
thing is they see so much of it, they know
when they're being wronged. And he just felt like the
bottom of the zone was available. I can't remember who

(51:57):
was pitching against, but the bottom of the zone. Yeah,
the bottom of the zone was available to whoever the
other starter was, and it wasn't there for him. And
he said there were at least five pitches in that
fifty seven pitch inning that he thought would have been
strikes for the opponent. So anyway, a very interesting thing.
And quickly before we go on to the next thing,

(52:20):
Dean checks in from Austria. I saw that, Jeff, I
saw that. So good to you as well, Dean. And no,
I don't think Elvis is a candidate to be the
hitting coach either.

Speaker 3 (52:29):
No, but I do think Elvis, of all these guys
we've mentioned, and yes, he does make a lot of money.
It did make a lot of money. I think Elvis
could could be a coach. I think Elvis feels like
he left some numbers on the table through maybe some
you know, mistakes he made as a younger player, not

(52:51):
being as focused as he could have been. Perhaps I
think Elvis could teach a lot of guys some stuff.
I don't know if it's in a hitting capacity, but
I think it's maybe more of a life a life
skills capacity. Maybe you know, maybe a special assistant who
talks to the players of Latin America and but all players,

(53:12):
because Elvis is English, has always been always been so good,
you know, I think Elvis could help out TLC nine
to four LS. He brought up something that I was
thinking about on the way in. This may be what
these players are, you know, and you know, I Simon

(53:35):
has been has been up and down throughout his career,
but he's usually followed a bad one with a good one.

Speaker 2 (53:39):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (53:41):
But a doles Garcia entered the season as a career
like two forty five hitter, you know. Uh, Jonah him
was in the two twenties or two thirties for his career,
you know. And they're talking about Kyle Gashioka coming in
and off this great seventeen home run season. He still
hit like two twenty last year. Yeah, and you know

(54:01):
is seventeen and amberition Well maybe, And you know, I'm
sure everybody has their opinions about Leoti Tabaris or you know,
he's got a pretty long runway here. This might be
who he is. Offensively, you still don't know about Josh Young.
Burger has been better though, But I mean I thought this,
I've had your thought there, TLC, and you might might

(54:25):
go on to something.

Speaker 2 (54:26):
No, it's a scary thought because again, what the Rangers
are trying to prove is that twenty twenty four was
the aberration and that twenty twenty three is how they
will comport themselves going forward. But maybe we're all going
to learn the hard way that twenty twenty three was
in fact the aberration and that everything clicked and everything

(54:47):
came together. And look, the pitching didn't click that year.
I mean, they got some good starting pitching, but the
bullpen was bloody awful and to Grom was hurt, right,
Gram was hurt right out of the shoot. Yeah, Valdy
missed a lot of the second half. You know, at
one point I thought John greg would have been an
All Star. He was, he was pretty good.

Speaker 3 (55:05):
Yeah, but it's uh, you know, I guess I guess
that's a possibility. No, I like to think that it's not.
They you know, Rangers pro scouting, everybody that was, you know,
had been giving the amateur side crap about the bad
drafts and whatnot, and they kind of changed their drafts

(55:25):
philosophy to go, you know, maybe a little bit safer
with college of guys. They haven't been as wild. They
haven't taken a high school guy since Cole Wynn in
twenty eighteen. The pro scouts were nailing it for many seasons,
they really were. They're finding guys in the Dominican, finding
guys in Japan. You know, you look at what they're

(55:48):
doing with the bullpen this year, and you know they
tried to target very specific areas this last offseason, you know,
the hitting fastballs and hitting right handed hitters. That's why
Jake burr Her and Jack Peterson were added to the team.
But you needed the internal improvement too, And so did
you misidentify something? Well, excuse me why a Langford looks

(56:10):
like a hell of a player because that looked like
a pretty easy one for the amateur side. And you know,
there's there's no reason to argue with what he's doing.
But and Young and the health and all of that. Boy,
you know, you you like to see the power. You
do see a lot of swing and miss from Josh Still,

(56:33):
Josh Young acquired in the trade. That looks like a
good win for pro scouting. So, you know, I don't
know that. I think the Rangers feel good about what
they've put together. You know, Secrets a hell of a player,
and Simeon has been in the past, but he's got
to get going. Benny here anticipates that that they're going

(56:53):
to be eating a big chunk of simeon salary after
the season. You know, I don't I don't know about
I think we have five more months to let that
one play out. And I probably would suspect that Simeon
would still be on the roster next season, even if
this one's a disaster.

Speaker 2 (57:13):
And no, I don't see him at this point. I
don't see him going back rarities to that leadoff spot.

Speaker 3 (57:20):
No, I don't either, you know, And because he has
had a couple instances on this last road for a
batting fifth where he produced runs and you know, you
just it's just getting guys on base. And if Josh
Smith is the better option right now, you know, at
some point maybe maybe you do consider why Langford. I

(57:40):
know you want to drive him, you want him to
drive guys in. But if he's the only one getting
on base right early, I think he might lead the
team in walks in addition to what he's doing on
the hitting side.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
And with regard to him, as tempting as it might
have been for Boach to play him or even pinch
hit him yesterday, he really wanted him to have a
down day, a day off, right, because he's only a
week back from an oblique injury. Right, And that was
I mean, that was a restraint, right, That was good
willpower from Boach, as tempting as it would be to

(58:13):
get that bat in there at some point somehow.

Speaker 3 (58:16):
Well, you got to manage your players. You got to
keep them healthy for the long run. We talk about
this has been terrible. Offense is awful. The Rangers are
still two games above five hundred and they've got one
hundred and thirty four games left to play. Yep, so
there's a lot of baseball, a lot of things could happen,

(58:36):
but you would think by this point the bats would
be would be going.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
They're ten and three at home, and so obviously they
have a home field advantage. Interestingly, as we continue and
finish up our cleanup segment, a couple of teams with
better home records than the Rangers at home, the Mets
are twelve and one at home.

Speaker 3 (58:59):
Jeff, Yeah, they're they're playing pretty well. I think they're
the new I think in the MLB power rate they are.

Speaker 2 (59:06):
They're the new number one, number one rankings.

Speaker 3 (59:08):
We'll see how long that lasts.

Speaker 2 (59:10):
But and they haven't really gotten Soto on tracked yet. Yeah,
or he hasn't gotten himself on tracked. However, you say
that the other team that's been really good at home
after an eight and two homestand is the Detroit Tigers, who,
by the way, are on the next of the you know,
the schedule for the next road trip for the Rangers.
Tiger's just finished an eight and two homestand they are

(59:32):
thirteen and three at home. Jeff and my brother called
me to Dan. He said, hey, you know, Tigers are
thirteen and three at home. When you guess when the
last time they were thirteen and three at home, wasn't naturally,
I said, well, eighty four, I guess right, they've started
that year thirty five and five. Nope, nineteen eleven. Oh,
my Tiger Stadium wasn't even built yet. They were at

(59:52):
briggs Field in nineteen eleven. Tiger Stadium opened in nineteen twelve.
So it's been a minute since the Tigers have been
that good at home. And who knows, you know, three
straight wins and the Rangers get to thirteen and three
at home, which I'm sure would have to be the
best sixteen game start they've ever had, although at home,

(01:00:12):
I'm sure that will be in the game notes. I
was just gonna say that will in the game notes.
So yeah, there have been some teams that have a
serious and decided home field advantage, and the Texas Rangers
are one of them. They're home for seven in a row,
so that's a good thing right now. And they also

(01:00:32):
have just their their quote unquote murderer's row of pitchers,
you know, facing the the athletics who don't have a
first name here for the next three of the next four.
And Patrick Corbyn tonight, who's been pretty good.

Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
I'm fine with Oakland. I'm fine with Sacramento.

Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
Do you like West Sacramento? I think I heard Eric
Nadel call them that on there. Oh, by the way,
