Run game Sometimes you die by the one run game,
and tonight the Rangers died a slow and painful sort
of death in a one run game. Hi there, and
welcome into the early early morning edition of the Rangers
DLLs Rangers Podcast. It's John Raddigan here with Jeff Wilson.
(01:02):
We're both at home doing this, as is the profit
of life to Smith. We hope that you are at
home too watching this as we try to put it
into some kind of decent perspective. Jeff, this is this
is one of those classic gut punch losses.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
So yeah, you know, they they the Rangers gave it away.
You know, you can you can point to the ninth
inning and then the mistake that Taveries may but of
course in why at Langford lost that fly ball in
the third inning that that eventually led to two Oakland runs.
But you can point to other things too. The Rangers
(01:38):
loaded the bases twice, granted with two ounce and didn't score.
Luke Jackson walked a guy who's mat in one sixty
seven in the ninth and you know, and and and
to Graham, well he was great. He had a chance
to get out of the inning without any damage done,
and he hung a slider. Luke Jackson had a chance
to get out of the inning on the slider. So
(01:59):
you know, there are a lot of things, a lot
of a lot of ways, a lot of fingers to point.
That is what I'm trying to get to. And then
you know, the the offense only scored three runs, and
and and you know they did all in one inning
on three solo homers got to score more than three runs. So, yes,
the Leodi mistake is glaring, and it's a pattern because
(02:23):
he's he's done it a couple of times this year
and and you don't like to see it, but it's
a it just they just gave it away in a
lot of ways they did.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
That is sort of one of those things though, in
combination with the other mistakes which seem Leodi make up
there in the you know, it seems like actually most
of them have actually been on the road. But I
don't think that has anything to do with it. I mean,
in this case, it just seemed like he took his
eye off the ball, Jeff. And that's that becomes a
(02:57):
concentration thing, and it's got to be a frustration, uh,
you know for obviously for management.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Well, I'm sure he was trying to see where the
runner was going and all of that stuff. And you know,
because I think every outfielder thinks they can throw the
guy out no matter how fast he is or what
situation is. But it was just a a bad mistake.
You know, he really wasn't in front of the ball.
(03:26):
You know, if you had me, it might have hit
off his leg and might have kept kept the runner
from from getting the second, you know, and then you
have first and third, let's say, and you're looking at
a tie game and not a loss, and you're looking
at extrading. So you know, it's uh, it is somewhat
of a concern. I mean, and after after the game,
(03:47):
they Dave Raymond was talking about how Leoti hates the
cold and and you know, you think of the mistakes
he made. The one was in Chicago, and I don't
I can't remember if you made one and sel or not.
But these are cold their venues and you see these
you see these outfielders A Doulas and Lowrence Butler on
the other team, you know, like it's snowing three feet outside.
(04:09):
You know that's that's the way they're dressed. So you know,
there there is a thought in baseball, and you know,
David Ortiz was a big proponent of it. He said
he did start hittinguntil he got warm. Well guess what
the cold weather games count too. So I don't know
what they're going to do though, you know, I know
I saw the chat before we came on, and there
(04:32):
it looks.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Like I may be on again. So we'll keep but
forging through this as somehow late this late at night,
it doesn't seem like there'd be a lot of internet
traffic out there, but the prompt here telling us that
maybe there's a little too much internet traffic. Maybe that's
because of what else was happening in sports on this night,
(04:52):
a draft night as it were. But the Rangers had
us all poised to celebrate. That was about to be
the kind of win that you could really celebrate, and
instead it becomes the kind of loss that you really
just you'd love to forget. But it'll be one of
those that's hard to forget, you know. Jacob de Gram,
(05:14):
Jeff uh did, he had he had two earned runs.
In some ways, it almost seems like those runs should
not be earned. I get that that's not an error
out there when you lose a ball in that kind
of a sky, but and and look, this is a
young player and it's a brand new place for them.
But that's that's a very you know, that's a tough
(05:36):
way to earn two runs.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, and it's it is strange that it happened in
the third game of the series, and you know, in
what my back Mike Massik says, real, you know there's
there there's a tricky sky right at dusk, you know,
and and not having a third deck that that's something
that that is legitimate, you know, it really is. And
(06:00):
maybe the lights aren't very good. A lot of minor
league parks don't have great lighting. It's really a problem
for night games in spring training. You'll hear guys complain
about not being able to see them balling in night
game the spring training. So you know, surprised stadium doesn't
look all that differently from Stutter health Ballpark. Er Sutter
(06:20):
health Ballpark, what the hell is called? So yeah, I
mean this is a screwy series, no excuses though it
should have won the Knight's game. Bottom line is they
should have won the Knight's game. And you know, you
wonder the lineup shure looks like it's missing Corey Seeger.
I know it's only been two games, but I would
(06:41):
have liked to have seen him back there instead of
Jock Peterson in the three hole. Just just some things
that went wrong, and unfortunately they went wrong at a
really bad time there for Leody Tavares and Luke Jackson.
But know, so some people in chatter, ask them, will
(07:03):
you know, what are you going to do with Leod's defense?
Call up Evan Carter. Now, look, Evan Carter hit a
three run hover tonight. That's awesome. He went one for
five in his.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
So lots of mistakes in this one made and not
just made by Leodi Taveres and Wyatt Langford. But Jeff
mentioned it that and mentioned it at the top of
the show. I don't know that you'd necessarily call them mistakes,
but the big picture, it is a mistake to leave
that many runners stranded when you get the bases loaded
(07:35):
in more than one occasion. The reality is, Jeff, all
three of the runs scored on solo home runs. I mean,
if Josh Young hits his bomb two innings earlier, it's
a Grand Slam. But you know, in that at Battie
popped out to the second basement, thrilled that he came
back and got a home run. But sometimes timing is
(07:56):
very important on that too. And if it gets to
four nothing first inning, this is a different ball game.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Yeah, that that that's not scoring there early on was
was costly because you had a chance to get this
This guy who's making his third start of the season,
h J T Gin and it looked like he kind
of settled in there until the until the home runs.
You know, he thought. I thought you kind of found
(08:26):
a groove there and that you you lament making the mistakes.
And then the A's bullpen was really good, a bunch
of guys you really never hear of unless you're a
really good fan of the American League West, and they
got they got the job done, and the Rangers bullpen
wasn't looking like it was getting the job done and
(08:46):
just didn't or didn't at the at the worst time.
I do wonder you know that. I think that's the
first time Luke Jackson has gone in any plus, I
thought that was a little bit interesting, you know, going
with him there. You could have gone, I guess, with
Armstrong in the eighth to get out of the eighth maybe,
(09:07):
you know, it looked like the slider was the pitch
against Brookers, so you know, good call there, I guess.
But did that affect Luke Jackson, I don't know. And
again he didn't pitch terribly, but that walk was it
was pretty costly.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yes, it was. Of course it came back to bite
the Rangers and the and the a's take the series
two games to one in this case, and it's it
shows once again, Jeff just sort of the game of
inches nature of this game. But it also shows that
the offense were as excited as we were on Tuesday
(09:43):
night and the way things went. And granted, Corey Seeger
at least at the start of that game was in there.
But you know, this, this offense is not fixed. It
looks like maybe it's getting better, but it's not healed.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
No, it's not. You know, I thought Jake Berger had
a decent game, even though he was hitless. Uh the
Jacob Wilson kid robbed him once and and and made
another decent play up the middle that to prevent another
hit Josh Smith lined out, you know, and and to
(10:21):
end one inning. And I thought he hit the ball
well there. So there there are signs within within the loss.
But gosh, you know, after the eight runs the other night,
you're thinking, who these guys are? Here they come, but
you know, your your momentum is only as good as
the next day starting pitcher and uh Sears was pretty good.
(10:42):
And then this guy again tonight was good enough. I know,
he gave up the three solo homers and they got
him out kind of early. But nevertheless, you know, he
didn't he didn't give up the six or seven runs.
You know that that that we were right to be
given up. He made pitches that pitching made the Josh
Young Josh Young swung at a two huh fastball and
(11:04):
jammed himself. You know, it's uh and and some of
that is being overly aggressive. You gotta you know, you
got to know your your your zones in those situations
and where you're hot, and if the ball's out there,
don't swing all right, you know, wait for your pitch.
You're still ahead in the count, it's still you're still
in the driver's seat there. But yeah, again that's that's
(11:25):
I don't want to say nitpicking because those things all
all all play a part in it, but to not
to not score early on, to not have a chance
to widen that lead or create a big margin that
ended up coming back to buy the Rangers as well.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah it did. And it's in some ways it felt
to me just watching like Jacob de Gram and it'll
be interesting to hear what he says, because I know
he's very critical of his performances. But it felt to
me like he was really hitting his spots tonight. Now,
granted that that low part of the strike zone was
(12:03):
was you know, something that was was well utilized tonight
by our own plate umpire. And that was fine because
Jacob Brum lives down there and it favored him some
that said, it felt to me like he was really
hitting his spots.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Yeah, I mean, he is hard on himself, but he's
he will and I'm sure he said it to the
group there. The pitch he threw to Soderstrum in the
drove and the runs in the in the third you
could tell he was discussed. You could see it in
his reaction. He knew he made a bad pitch and
(12:39):
and he'll he'll be accountable for that. He won't blame
anything on why at Langford, you know, he'll he'll be
he'll be like, well, I you know, I let the
number eight hit or get two hits off and you know,
I you know, that's that's stuff's on me. So but
he he did pitch well again, you know, I mean,
and it keeps it keeps getting better, I think, and
(12:59):
uh uh you know, And and that's another thing. If
that play is made, all right, let's say that play
gets made. Jacob de Gram probably finishes the sixth, right,
so you know, he had to throw all those extra pitches,
so he probably gets through six. Maybe he gets into
the seventh, you know, and and and can you know,
(13:20):
you you have more options later in the game there,
so you know, don't don't overlook that aspect of the play.
And you know a lot of outfielders have been there
and they hate it, and it's a helpless feeling, I'm sure,
and and we know why at Langford and he I'm
sure was really upset about it. But you know, there's
(13:43):
there's still other ways to pick a guy up and
and again, and the groam missed on the on the slider,
and and then then the offense didn't score after the
fourth inning or before the fourth inning. They only scored
in one.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
You know, yeah, yeah, yeah, you need to spread those
runs out a little bit more. And you can certainly
see that. You know, as Mike Bassikt talked about, you
mentioned that not having that upper deck, that ball gets
into that sky so much more quickly, and that's where
you lose it and where why it was you know,
(14:22):
really wasn't even a lot of times guys do that
and you're almost afraid the ball is going to land
on them because they don't see it, and they hit him.
He was he was aways away from that ball. It
seems like almost he never saw that ball.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Yeah, I mean he missed. He was like twenty feet
away from it. It wasn't even close, and uh, you
know it was, it was, but he he so catially
went over there. I guess you go where you think
it's hit and then well.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
He could never really pick that one up. It's uh,
it's a tough one. It's a tough one to take
for the Rangers who lose it today tonight, I should
say this morning, as it were, by a final, by
a very unfortunate four to three final. So we've got
more coming up as we continue to try and break
this one down. We'll also look ahead to the series
(15:10):
coming up in San Francisco. But we first pause from
talk about some of our favorite people here on the
DLLs Rangers Podcast, and we want to tell you about
that Lone Star Smokeout. Man, what a weekend. Next weekend
(15:35):
will be around in and around Globe Life Field at
and T Stadium. The Lone Star Smokeout is a combination
of a barbecue competition and country music and a huge
happy hour and an early Sinco de Mayo celebration. It
is an awesome opportunity for each and every one of
you to go do some of your favorite things in
(15:57):
the world. Watch baseball, eat barber, drink beer, listen to
country music. It's all right there in walking distance at
the Lone Star Smokeout. So make sure you go on
to the website there and get yourself and take it
to the Lone Star Smokeout. It is next weekend at
at and T Stadium, and we are awfully proud to
(16:18):
be partnering with the Lone Star Smokeout and telling you
to get over there, have yourself a good time next weekend.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Yeah, and you know I can. I haven't done it yet,
but I could. I could pull out my sleeper money.
I could take my wife and kids and John, probably
you and Kaffe and they have a good time over
there at the Smokeout. But I am. I am in
a little bit of a rut this week. I'm having
a tough week. I was undone by Cole Reagan's and
(16:46):
growing today. That didn't help. So that kind of stinks.
But that's that's that's no problem. It's fun the sleeper.
It's it's daily picks. They're known for their fantasy now
it's daily picks. With the NHL playoffs, the NBA playoffs
and MLB all going, it just heightens your sports experience
and you may win a little money and you can
(17:08):
do it for as little as a dollar. So Sleepers
here to help you. DLS Rangers. They will match up
to one hundred dollars on a first deposit.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
So they call it a shoulder impingement, Jeff. And that
is what will send Kamar Rocker to the injured list,
and he was sent there today. As a matter of fact,
Gerson Garabido was recalled to take his spot on the
active roster. And it begs the questions. Certainly, first of all,
(17:41):
did that and it likely did right have something to
do with last night's performance by Kamar.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Well you in sure to think so you know it, Yeah, again,
it's not summertime, Sacramento. It's a little bit chili Sacramento.
He had to work really hard in that sitting. I
think he threw thirty six pitches, maybe thirty seven. That's
a big number. That's a big number. And so uh,
(18:10):
he started to feel it, Bruce Bochi said during the start,
maybe that was when he threw some more on the
second inning, and you know, twenty seven, it just it
just wasn't good. And so if his shoulder was hurting,
whether it's a significant thing, and this sounds like it's
not significant, sounds like he's going to miss one or
(18:32):
maybe two starts, then then take care of it now.
And and I wrote over at our website if you're
a if you're a diehard, you can read it kind
of a I don't know, me just thinking out loud,
this might be a chance for him to get his
mind his mind right to or to let you know,
just kind of kind of catch up on everything. So
(18:53):
because he is a rookie, you know, he is a rookie,
and he is in you know, going to ballparks. He's
never pitched at. He's doing things he hasn't done in
a long time. I mean, keep in mind here that
this guy hasn't had a full season since twenty twenty one,
(19:15):
and it was in college. Okay, he's been hurt, he's
been pitching in it independently. The redo is a draft stock.
Then he gets hurt again. So he hasn't pitched a while,
and then if you want to go all the way
back to spring training, you know you have had multiple
people say that he wasn't ready to pitch. He might
have been in better shape, but he wasn't ready to pitch,
(19:35):
so he had to play catch up there. It seems
like it's been a race here and sometimes maybe you know,
on the road, it's where he's been the worst. He
has a fifteen seventy five ERA on the road and
three road starts. He's been fined at home. John, you
know that Brookies have trouble on the road sometimes. So anyway,
this il stretch, while it's going to get his shoulder
(19:56):
fine or better, maybe it gets his head better. Maybe
he can maybe he can just kind of digest all
that he's been through, catch his breath, organize his thoughts,
realize what's working what isn't. He can work on his mechanics.
He's not going to be throwing, but you can still
work on your mechanics. You can look at video, you
can you can figure out what's been working and what
(20:19):
hasn't been working, and then watch the game. Watch how
Nathan evolved me in Jacob de Grom pitch, especially on
the road. Watch how they handle environments, Watch how they
go out and get ready and when they do it,
so that you know when you come to the dugout,
the timing is still the same as if you were
starting at home, you know, and it's it's a lot here.
(20:41):
You foremost is the health, of course, because the Rangers
are un healthy. But I really think he can take
advantage of this. Really, it happened with white Langford last year.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
You know.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
White Langford heard his hamstring in early May last year,
had it go on the injured list. When he came back,
it just seemed like he was a different player. So
hopefully there's some ancillary he benefits to this aisle set
for Kamar.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
Yeah, and look, when you think about what he's dealt
with thus far, as we mentioned several times, it's been
very much an up and down season. What he needs
to concentrate on is are those ups right? Especially the
start prior to this one in Sacramento that was by
far as best as a professional, and he really had
(21:24):
that slider working. He was really landing it, and we
really need, you know, he needs to really concentrate on
what he was doing there to see if he can
replicate that when he comes back. It does in the
short term, I guess, you know, for lack of a
better word, Jeff, it simplifies things a little bit. For
the rotation. Now, we were talking that during the thirteen
(21:47):
day stretch there it may be necessary or certainly possible
to go with the six man rotation. But he's out
for fifteen, right, isn't a pitchure automatically go to the
fifteen That's right?
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Yeah, fifteen, So you.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Know it may not be he may not even be
eligible until such time as they're they're almost through that
thirteen game stretch.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah, but you know, may they only have three days off.
You know, they're in a stretch of I think twenty
six games and twenty seven days something to that effect.
But yeah, I mean, Bruce Bochy said before the game
that they were planning to use a six man rotation
here when when Lighter came back, and now they can't.
They got to go with five. Yeah, they could if
(22:33):
they wanted to give Caleb Boslia a spot start do
something like that. You know, Garabido, you know, he can
provide some lengths and Jake Lats was really good, was
really really good last night. So they could do something
like that if they wanted, and two of those three
three guys have options, so you could replace them the
next day something of that effect if it's that big
(22:55):
of a deal. But yeah, now now it's kind of
a crunch time thing for for these pitchers who've been
I wouldn't say they've been taking it easy because they
haven't been, but there's been off days and time to
rest up. Well, now now's going to be a challenge
here for these guys. Really. You know, you have to
go back to the very start of the season where
they played the what the seven in a row to
(23:18):
start the year. They haven't haven't had that that issue really,
so they're gonna have to do that pitch on four
days rest like they've done their whole career. It might
be a bigger deal for for a lighter and Rocker
if Rocker we're healthy, but anyway, just because of the
minor league schedule these days, but you know it that
(23:40):
so the injury disrupts that. But there are ways some
maneuver it massages. But I mean, the good news is
that Patrick Corbman, you know, you probably want to see
him start again, you know, I mean for being perfectly honest.
He's been just fine. And uh uh he he can
get you into the fifth or extending you know, that
(24:02):
helps save the bullpen a little bit. He kep. He's
given the Rangers a chance to win every time he's
been out there. It's only been three times, I know.
But uh they they they're they're two and one and
those starts they should be three and oh. So it's
you know, it's a big deal. But it's not a
big deal. I guess. I guess the timing could be
(24:23):
better though for this injury.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Yeah, and it's probably the kind of thing you wouldn't
even bat an eyelash at, except that there are so
many guys who's the Rangers are trying to limit their innings,
you know, Tyler Malley.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Well, it looks like John locked up guys. But John, John,
you're there, You got us, you copy him ego, all right.
I think where he was with some.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Of that, you might have otherwise than able to give
some of these guys that time off or that that
little extra spot here and there where they're not putting
so much pressure on themselves and they're thus giving themselves
an opportunity to be available and to be ready later
on in the season. So right now it looks like
(25:22):
the profit is saying I'm frozen. Is that you.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Were you were, you were frozen, but you're back. So anyway,
that's fine. But I get what you're saying. You know,
you have you have guys who can go deeper in games,
but they're also at the same time guys who are
coming off of surgeries, and you don't assarily to want
to want to cook them early. And again that's yeah, yeah, well,
(25:48):
and that's why you have some relievers who are an option.
So you know, if you want to give these guys
a five inning start one day, limit them to five,
just eat it and say you're only going five e's
a day. Bullpen's gonna work. You can go get somebody
the next day. I mean, there are ways to do it.
But also, you know, they've looked pretty good the few
(26:11):
times they have had to go on five, and I
think of all these had to do it, maybe Malley
had to on the last home stand and was really
good the second time. So you know, I think you know,
these in his case and a Grom's case, they've both
thrown two hundred Indians in their career. So It's not
like they don't know how to do it. It's just you
(26:32):
want these guys solid at the end of the season
and that you still wanted to have bullets, to not
be going on fumes because the Raiders still have these
gray aspirations and I don't Hey, they can absolutely still
get there, there's no question about that, despite these kicking
the nuts losses they've had that looks like you froze again. Yeah,
(27:01):
so I'm going to talk about Evan, Oh, are you frozen? Gun?
Speaker 2 (27:04):
Are you backed out? That this team is going to
still be a contender. They have struggled on the road,
obviously winning their first road series of the season in
Cincinnati and then losing the next three, Right, so they'd
like to rectify that in San Francisco. That's going to
be a tough place to do it. We'll talk more
(27:26):
about the Giants a little bit later, but right now,
the concern is that series, and the concern is getting
better offensively, and the concern is getting better on the road.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Yeah, no, that's a big one. These guys are you know,
they're not very good on the road. They gotta they gotta,
you gotta fix that one too. You know, if you're
going to go places, you have to be at least
five hundred on the road. That's that's that's the minimum.
I And and you know, Seattle has been tough for them.
(28:03):
We get that. Yeah, you're in and out, but Seattle's
Seattle has been tough. Sacramento has been tough. At least
it was this time. Uh Rangers got to straighten it out.
You know, they can't have these losing road trips road
trip after road trip. And you know the next one
is Boston and Detroit. Well those are two good teams,
(28:26):
and yes, so so and then and then it's the
Yankees White Sox. All right, so maybe you do okay
in Chicago, but you know, Yankee stadiums Yankee Stadium. So yeah,
it'd be nice that they could get at least get
it turned around and closer to five hundred on the
road by the end of May.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
Yeah, and that's it. I mean, that's really the goal
right now, as well as this team's played at home
almost top too, all right.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
I think we allows him this time this time for sure.
Well that's good timing though, because we're about to go
to an ad read. But when we get back from
the ad read, we're going to go and we're going
to talk about the giants, but also we're going to
talk about the bullpen. And I'm going to get to
all these Evan Carter answers because John's John's technical difficulties
(29:29):
keep cutting me off. But anyway, all that's coming up
on the DLS Rangers podcast. But first, LinkedIn is here
to help you. If you own a business and you
don't have time to go through these job applicants and
(29:53):
get the word out and all that jazz, well, you've
got to go to LinkedIn, all right, because LinkedIn they're
like you're hiring part or LinkedIn jobs. When you clock out,
LinkedIn clocks in. They make it easy to post your
job for free, share it with your network, and get
good candidates. You know, I mean there are a lot
of a lot of hirable people out there on LinkedIn,
(30:14):
and and they do it all at one place. You
don't have to go to a bunch of different websites.
It's great, it's it's really you know, these things revolutionize
things for small business owners who who already have their
their hands full. So you you post your job, uh
and and and you can write your job description and
get in front of the people you want to get
(30:36):
in front of.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
And and here's the deal for you. If you post
your job at LinkedIn dot com slash rangers, that's LinkedIn
dot com slash rangers, they'll let you post it for free.
Terms and conditions apply.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Yeah, and of course game time. Don't forget about game time. Yeah,
it's NHL playoff time and there is there is almost
nothing better than the drama of an NHL playoff game.
Those things can It's like a pitcher's duel in baseball
in game seven, a game seven in the NHL playoffs.
(31:13):
You know, every trip down the ice, one of the
teams or the other, it could change everything about the game.
So you need to get yourself some tickets and get
this as the tickets. Even for these high leverage playoff games,
there are tickets available on game time for these Stars,
Avalanche or whoever they might play in the next round.
Oh I'm putting them through the next round already. But anyway, Ah,
(31:36):
you know, you can get tickets to those games. And
the closer you get to game time, the cheaper the
tickets become. So go ahead, roll the dice and get
yourself some seats at one of those Fantastic Stars Avalanche games,
two of them have gone to overtime already this series.
I'm a huge fan of the NHL Playoffs. I know
(31:57):
most of you are too, So go to game time
and use the code DLLs and you'll get twenty dollars
off your first purchase on game time, although you may
have already utilized your first purchase. So, Jeff, we talked
a lot about the Bullpen. It almost worked, didn't it. It
almost was like just how you lay it out right
(32:21):
with you know, Garcia and Martin and in different order,
but you know, you almost had everything clicking. Martin then Garcia,
then Jackson, after Hoby Milner, who's inserted himself into this
into this mix a little bit, and so gosh, it's
(32:42):
unfortunate the way the bullpen will to probably take a
shot for this game. But they were right on the
verge of doing just exactly the job they're called to do.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Well. They have no margin for air, you know, when
it's when it's three to two, they give up a run,
die game, they give up two runs, team loses. So
but Milner came in did a really nice job. He's
I really like like the way he's pitching, you know,
and we talked about it how bad he was in
(33:15):
spring training, but he's been terrific. Martin just seems to get,
you know what, what wherever he fits best, whether it's
the seventh order, the eighth or even both. Just you know,
kind of if you looked at the innings and you
could kind of see how how it was being planned out,
(33:36):
because the A's had some some pretty hefty left handed
bats coming up that fit Garcia in the eighth better
than Martin in the seventh, and and so it all
it all worked out. Uh, and the ninth, you know,
you know, they even brought and Luke Jackson there to
get to get Garcia out of the out of the
ninth or eighth, and then we all know what happened
in the ninth. But again there's no margin Freyer and
(33:59):
there was a big air and that that just led
to a lot of complications and issues and ultimately a loss.
But I think when you look at the bullpen, considering
all the nail biting and and uh, you know, hair
pulling that was done in the off season in spring
training because the Rangers didn't get a big name guy,
(34:20):
uh to be the closer. Gosh, this group's been so good.
They've exceeded expectations by far. You know. The one concern
if they're going to keep playing these close games is
how do you pace these guys? How do you make
sure that you're not killing them and that they still
have stuff left at the end of the end of
the year, you know. I mean, you look at you
(34:42):
look at tomorrow's game, and you wonder who's gonna available available.
I don't think they tax themselves too badly because they
didn't pitch Wednesday. Uh so maybe they're the four who
pitch tonight are still available, but you know, probably not Saturday,
and then you'd have them for Sunday, but then you're
not going to have them for Monday, So I don't know.
It's it's a heck of a situation. The Rangers have
(35:05):
put them in and and and we'll be frank, it's
the offense issue. If the offense was scoring runs and
giving these guys a chance to to not have to pitch,
you know, give these guys a day off, then then
you're going to be better. But all these close games
and you want to win them, obviously, so you're going
to use your best arms, and they're gonna work a lot.
(35:26):
So you know, they got they got to a win
a couple of blowouts, and b figure out a schedule
that that paces these guys because using four high leverage
arms a night, it's not gonna work.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
No, No, that's way too much. They've got to get
more out of more, more out of different guys, meaning more.
And but to your point, we never expected that Hoby
Milner would be a guy in this type of situation
right where he's one of the guys you call on
every night. Hopefully, you know, Armstrong or a Web could
(36:03):
step up in a similar fashion to what Hoby Milner
has done. And then now you've got that depth in
the bullpen to have confidence in a number of different guys.
Right now, I think Hoby Milner obviously has established himself
as a guy they feel fully confident in and and
well they should. I mean, you know, he throws that
(36:26):
sweeper and it really it doesn't matter if it breaks
in on the right hander or away from or in
on the left hander and away from the right hander.
It's it's just deadly well.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
I thought his best pitch snight though, was the fast
falling through to get the strikeout to end the sixth.
I mean it was it was eighty seven paint on
the inside corner. I mean, and it was. It was
a great pitch. And you know, I guess, I guess
if he's thrown in these Frisbees, eighty seven looks like
ninety seven, you know, it just sure it's his fastball.
(37:01):
Seems to have characteristics and it just seems to surprise
a lot of hitters, it really does. And that's that's great,
you know. And and it was Miguil Andrew harr who
who took took it looking there and so yeah, great,
great for Hoby, and you know, doing it for his
hometown team, I think that's pretty cool. But he is
(37:24):
a he He really is a kind of a throwback reliever.
You know, he would be like a lefty specialist if
this was ten years ago or fifteen years ago, twenty
years ago, a guy who would come in and get
one batter five days a week. You know, this face
one tough lefty and get him. And Bruce Bochi had one.
He and Mike Myers on those Giants teams. Kind of
(37:47):
a similar guy funky arm angle, except Toby Hoby's pretty
good against right handers. He's actually got better splits against
right handers, so I think they feel comfortable with him
getting both guys out, but especially lefties. And and he's
a Mike Maddics kind of guy. Mike Maddox always loves
to have a change of pace, funky guy who can
(38:07):
just come in and kind of screw things up. So
good for a good job for the Rangers identifying Hobie
as a rebound candidate, signing him on the cheap, And
obviously we've got a long way to go. We're still
in April, but he's been he's been a wonderful little
surprise for the Rangers.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Yeah, you know, you mentioned that April thing and the
ops really you know, the home series, all of them,
the home every home game, every home series has been
you know, so high, and other than that Cincinnati series,
the road series have been so low. It feels like
we've had a lot of season already. The reality is
(38:48):
there's not much, but the highs and lows I think
make it feel like that there's there's you know.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
Other they're they're tight ball games, and and they're they're
kind of stressful. They're stressful to watch. They're stressful I'm
sure to manage. I mean, Bruce Bochi had said, uh,
early in the year he was he was asked about it,
and and somebody said, uh, hey, hey, Boach, what do
you think about Boach? What do you think about these
(39:21):
close games? He goes, I hope they're not close. We
need to start scoring runs. We need some blowouts. And uh,
you know, because it's stressful on him, a guy who's won,
you know, more than two thousand big league games. But
he he knows it's taxing. He knows it's mentally taxing.
H it's taxing for the bullpen. And uh, anyway, they're
they're still back. John. We're going to talk about Evan
(39:43):
Carter now, because there are a lot of questions about
Evan Carter. And you know a lot of people who
based on I guess Leod's error, and and and and
and Carter did hit a three run homeward tonight, So
obviously the next logical thing to do is to designate
Ta Varius for assignment Carter. Let's kind of tap our
brakes here on Evan Carter. I know he's the future
(40:07):
in center field. I have no question about that. He
hit the home run tonight, which is awesome. He went
one for five, all right, he's batting one eighty now
he's on basis three forty nine. Okay, good for him.
He is stealing bases. He hasn't played back to back
games this actually, he hasn't played back to back games
(40:29):
since April ninth and April tenth and April tenth. There
was just a pinch hit appearance. Okay, he's not ready.
I think the Rangers are still trying to get a
hold of this guy. And you can't have a guy
who you're going to count on who can't play back
to back games. You know, they don't want to call
Evan Carter up until he can be an everyday player
(40:52):
and even a four day a week player. He hasn't
been that yet. He played three times last week, you know.
Now he's on he's kind of trending the right way
this week to where he's gonna play more than three days.
But maybe not. You know, who knows what's going to
happen this weekend between apparently visiting specialists and and and
(41:13):
just managing the workload. But to his credit, he does
have hits I think in uh seven of his six
of the last seven. All right, he is drawing walks,
which is good reaching base, but it's still not quite
there yet. So before anybody gets too excited about Evan Carter,
(41:36):
need to need to look at the whole picture here
and realize that that I don't think and I'm based
on conversations I had last week, Evan Carter does not
seem to be ready to come back and join the
join the big league club. And I don't know that
the Rangers are ready for him. They just need to
figure it out still, and he needs some things to
(41:58):
figure out. So you know, you you're going to be
if anything is going to happen, it would be Pullar
playing more, maybe a defensive substitutionally, or Dustin Harris playing more.
You know, I would have mind, you know, I guess,
I guess Leodi hadn't played in a while, so so
Dustin Harris was sitting tonight. But what wouldn't have been
(42:19):
bad to see Dustin Harris there either, So it'll be
interesting to see how it shakes out this this weekend.
But you know, it's not like you're not going to
punish the guy, you know, for for making the mistake.
It wasn't like he wasn't hustling to make the mistake.
Just you know, it's not like that. You know, it's
not a field goal kicker who missed three kicks in
(42:41):
one game. You're not going to cut him the next day.
I think that cooler heads will prevail ultimately, and Leodi will,
you know, come back and be on the be on
the bench tomorrow. But Evan Carter will not be on
the bench tomorrow. Depending on who's pitching for the Fighting Giants.
I would if it's a right hander out think that
(43:02):
Dustin Harris has a heck of a chance to play.
So we'll we'll see. The Rangers are bussing from Sacramento.
It's eighty miles, so it's not like they had to.
I don't even know if you can fly that far,
can you. I actually flew once from San Diego to
l A, so I guess you can do it. But
(43:24):
I don't know. Those private planes can go wherever they want.
But anyway, you know, the Giants, we're gonna get to
it in the next segment. The Giants have been really
good guys, and they kind of they started out hot
and they swooned a little bit. But it's it's gonna
be an interesting series, and it's a tough place to play,
tough place to hit. So it's it's gonna be another
(43:49):
tough one and the Rangers, they're gonna gonna have to
gonna have to show up this weekend. They're gonna have to,
you know, figure out a way to hit in a
ballpark where you usually don't hit a lot. And you know,
I don't I don't think they have to worry about
cleaning up anything major from today. The the fly ball
thing was a fluke, and then le OTE's thing, well
(44:10):
it just happened.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
Yeah, And as as I mentioned, you know, he hits
a home run tonight. I mean you have to take
sometimes the good with the bad. He's still a young player,
and like you say, it wasn't an error of uh,
you know, being completely out of place or not hustling.
It was a guy, uh, you know, trying to do
two things at once. He's trying to find, you know,
(44:35):
what the runner is doing and catch the ball, and
he made a mistake. So and to your point about
Evan Carter, I do fear that this back thing might
just be worse than I don't know, maybe even then
they know it seems like he frustration from the Rangers
(44:59):
people about the continuing issues of just sort of managing
this back situation. It's not an injury, obviously.
Speaker 1 (45:14):

Speaker 3 (45:55):
Well, the thing that we got to do and reads
is the time. Elijah. Let's let's oh, it is it's
time already.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
Yeah, it is time, and I'm rapping. I got all
my all my teams represented here tonight as we we
love this merchandise that you can get it all all
there you go as uh we go. We get our
merchandise from a stored out all citynetwork dot com. Uh
and there's so many shirts and so many different things
(46:24):
that you can get there. We encourage you to do.
We love all of ours. Hats are coming soon. I
know that you'll never see Jeff on these airwaves with
anything but a d LLS hat once we get those hats.
Speaker 3 (46:37):
But yeah, we got to get them.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
Yeah, that's yeah, that's step one is to get those
hats and then I'll punch we do. Jeff is going
to be all over them, so we'll be hopeful for that.
Also we'll be looking forward to polos and quarter zips,
so not really lobbying for so in the meantime, enjoy
(47:00):
these T shirts. Man, it's t shirt weather out there,
and get yourself any number of these. There's some great
ones out there. And my favorite right now, I really
still think tonight. Notwithstanding, my favorite out of all of
them right now is Hello win column. It gets people's attention.
So anyway, stored out allsittingnetwork dot com to get your
merchandise from our little network DLLs.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
And you get one for free when you become a
die hard. And John, I don't know if you knew
this or not, but the NFL Draft started tonight. I
hadn't heard anything about it the last two months incessantly
good lord. Anyway, the draft started, But our deal continues
thirty six dollars for one year. It gets you all
(47:44):
the benefits of being a diehard, which means unfettered access
to my stuff, Cowboys stars, the other team, the basketball team,
and then twenty percent off of our events and the
free T shirt or dot Allcity Network, dot com. It's
such a great deal. I think I think this sale
(48:06):
ends either Saturday or Sunday. So don't don't wait, don't
wait anymore, just go and do it. If you haven't
done it, you won't regret it. I promise you will
not regret it. So become a daughter to day. All right,
here we go, Yes, moving on to the jibts.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
So Lily would love you to do that, and we
think it would be wise on your part to become
a die hard.
Speaker 3 (48:41):
Yeah, I'll be right in this weekend. I'm not going
to San Francisco unfortunately, but we will be covering the
series as we always do. Games on thirty. Games are
games on Ranger Sports Network tomorrow and I think Big
Fox on Saturday, and then Monday's a national game too.
(49:01):
Is that Roku on Sunday? Whatever it is. It's kind
of a pain in the butt. But you know, if
you haven't been to San Francisco to watch a ball game,
yeah I should go. It's one of the better, one
of the better parks out there, right right there on
the bay. And it does get chilly at night. Day
(49:21):
games are really generally very very beautiful and sunny. You know,
it's a fun place to walk around. Uh So I
would encourage you to get out there at some point
if you got the money and the resources and the
time to do it. This weekend, by god, get out
there this weekend. But these Giants, they're they're doing pretty
(49:41):
darn good. All Right, it's just me again. Maybe John
should punt on the rest of the show, just say
it anyway. Yeah, So the Giants they beat Milwaukee again
(50:02):
to the night, six to five. They seem to be
winning in a lot of different ways, whether it's good
starting pitching like they get from Logan Web anyway, they're
seventeen and nine. They're half a game ahead of the
Dodgers in the NL West, half a game behind the Podres.
So it's a heck of a division out there. Seventeen
(50:22):
and nine good club won two in a row, and
the run differential is good plus twenty eight seven and
three at home, so you know, this is a test
for the Rangers. Nathan Evaldi and Justin Verlander tomorrow night
to start it off. That's pretty that's pretty good if
(50:43):
you're a fan of pitching and a fan of baseball history.
And Verlander was better in his last start. You know,
he's kind of had some hiccups along the way this season.
He was pretty good last time out. He kind of
found some velocity that he hadn't been having for a
few turns in the rotation. So good for him. He's
(51:04):
always he's always a tough, tough guy to face the Rangers.
Seems like I'm facing him for years and years and years.
Well they probably have. He's forty one for crying out loud.
But then Robbie Ray, the hard throwing lefty, former Cy
Young winner, He's gonna pitch the game Saturday Sunday. The
Rangers haven't decided what they're gonna do yet. They're either
(51:25):
gonna go with it would be Corbin's turn, but they
could go with lighter. They haven't decided yet. I would
think they would do lighter, but I don't know. I
don't know. I'm not I'm not there to talk to him,
but that kind of seems if there's indecision, it seems
(51:47):
like go ahead and go with the younger guy. But
then again, maybe the finger needs an extraday arrest. Anyway,
he's gonna be facing off against Hicks, who's the former
reliever with the Blue Jays and Cardinals who throws it
or can throw it through a wall. But he's got
a six fifty nine era so far as he's trying
to second year of this bullpen to start or transition,
(52:12):
and it's not going great for him. But again, that
works kind of room me and you never know what happens.
And it's not like the Ranger that are killing the
ball right now.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
No, that park's a tough place to hit, especially at
night though, as that air gets kind of heavy and cool,
the ball just doesn't fly as much, you know, out
of that ballpark at night. Daytime things are quite a
bit different there, but the air gets pretty heavy at night,
and you don't necessarily, necessarily, you know, get the distance
(52:46):
on any kind of a hit.
Speaker 3 (52:47):
So that I mean, well, I was mistaken. The game
on Sunday, I believe is back on the All the
Rangers Sports Network double Check one more Place. I don't
(53:14):
know what's going with John Johnny there. I don't know
what he's doing. But anyway, Yeah, it's pretty It's pretty
interesting when you look at the Giants and you kind
of look at their lineup and you're like, man, they
don't they don't have like a star player, and and
you know, they really kind of don't. Oddly enough, like
(53:35):
their best player right now is Wilmer Flores and driving
in a ton of runs. I think he I think
he might be leading baseball in a RB I uh
and he's a nice hitter, but gosh, you don't think
of him as being this m VP candidate. But the
Korean player they signed last year, he's coming back and
(53:56):
has been really good. Uh. Lee has been really really good.
I know this because he's on my fantasy team. I
also have the Yostremsky, the grandson of T. R. Sullivan's
favorite player ever, Carl Yastremsky Mike. He plays only against
right handers, kind of he's kind of like Jock Peterson,
(54:18):
except a good defensive player. And he was somebody who,
you know, kind of was linked to the Rangers if
if the Giants hadn't pick picked, agreed to, you know,
sign him, tender him a contract this year in his
last year of arbitration. There are some thought that he
would be a perfect fit for the Rangers. As it
turns out, they did tender contract, and he's off to
(54:41):
a nice start for them too, to eighty two batting average.
He homer today, so he's up to four home runs.
Lee is batting three thirty three. They're big off season
sign signing was Willia Domis. He's hitting only two O
two and they have Matt Chapman who's great at third
and will hit the home run, but uh will strike
out a bunch too, So it's really a weird a
(55:04):
weird club. And let's not forget they have Sam Huff too.
Uh he he caught tonight. Sam's hitting two hundred this year,
but uh, it'll be good to see him. I really
like Sam a lot, and you wish for nothing but
good things for him. And yeah, he's on the big
(55:25):
league roster. Had to make the roster otherwise he'd have
to go out on waivers. So good stuff for him.
But you know, again, you kind of look at their
pitching staff. They have the bullpen, they have Rogers, have
Daval who seems to have gotten his head sown sewn
back on straight throws. It really really hard, so uh,
(55:46):
you got to get him early if you can. You know,
ver Lander and Robbie Ray might be tough. It's definitely
tough when Logan Web pitches. But the Rangers are missing
him this time. But the Gives Willa have their hands
full too, with a Valdi and Mally and either Lighter
or Corbyn.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
Yeah, and you know the other thing about Yustremsky, that's
one of Chuck Morgan's favorites because he introduced Mike and
he introduced Carl, uh you know, as a you know,
he introduced one and the grandson you know of the other.
You know, so that's pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (56:26):
Yeah, yeah, and uh, I guess the tr went up
to him and uh last year, I think and I
kind of spoke to him and said, hey, I'm sure
you get this a lot. But I was a huge
fan of your grandfather as Malton greatest player, and you know,
kind of checked in on Carl more than he checked
(56:46):
in on Mike, but uh and tr it kind of
felt embarrassed about it. But anyway, it's it's it's it's
pretty cool. And but yeah, he's not a bad ballplayer.
He's gonna be a free agent next year, and I
would think the Giants would want to bring him back,
especially if he's been this productive and he's making a
(57:07):
nine or ten million this year, so it's a pretty
affordable situation. He's not going to make a killing and
free agency. But you know, it's also you know, kind
of buried the lead because it's happened before. But Bruce
Bochie going back to the Giants where he you know,
won the three World Series and is beloved and you
(57:27):
still see people who even in spring training, who are
wearing Giants Bochy shirts at Rangers games, and you know,
I'm sure he has a ton of ticker requests and
a ton of people he's going to have to to
see and say hello to and shake hands with. But
he is, he is beloved. There there is no question
(57:49):
about that.
Speaker 2 (57:50):
Yeah, there's no doubt. And I was on a trip
his first year to Oakland with him, and I know
he's been bad. I wasn't on the trip to San Francisco.
But even in Oakland, you know, they may be somewhat rivals,
but they love Bruce Bouche and Oakland too, and certainly
any of the media, a lot of those media people
cover both teams at least some and all the media.
(58:13):
Of course, we're glad to see Boach on that very
first trip he made as a Rangers manager to Oakland.
So it's always and it's always special for him. He
loves that area and of course rightly loves his time
that he's spent there. As very fond memories of his
time in Oakland or in San Francisco.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
I should say, yeah, yeah, and yeah, he still talks
about the places he likes to go eat and drink
and fish, and you know he lived there for a
long long time. And but yeah, and this is a
I mean, he's hard not to like, you know, you
just just kind of his demeanor and the way he
(58:56):
goes about things and communicates with people and help friendly
is and stories that he likes to tell. I accidentally
button dialed Randy Galloway today and I told Randy, I said, Randy,
you would absolutely love Bruce Boch. And of course Randy
knows him. You know, Randy knows everybody. But it was
(59:16):
pretty funny. And anyway, yeah, it's gonna be a good series.
And like we said, the Rangers need to figure it out.
They need to figure it out on offense. Hey, you know,
here's another point. Donnie Ecker was the Giants, came to
the Rangers from the Giants, and Justin Veeley was with
the Giants just last year. Maybe they can, you know,
(59:37):
feel some of that good mojo from the good seasons
they had together and get something going. But you know,
the Rangers are just still scuffling. He thought you had
the breakthrough. Maybe Marcus Simeon plays well because he's back
near closer to his home than Sacramento, at least other
side of the base still, but maybe Marcus Simmeyon plays well.
(59:58):
You just hope that there's something there, And at this
point that's kind of what it is. It's hope. You know,
Jack Peterson, he's a former Giants player. Maybe maybe he
figures something out or remember something or feels good being
at Oracle Park or whatever they call it. These days.
So there's a lot of a lot of storylines to
(01:00:18):
follow this weekend, John, but the big one is and
the Rangers need to win on the road.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
They do. They need to figure this thing out. They
won their first road series of the season, they've lost
everyone since and it's time to turn that around, especially,
as you say, with Detroit and Boston staring them, you know,
on staring at them on their next road trips. So yeah,
this one, Oh, look like it was going to start
(01:00:43):
off well. They had that great game in Game one
where the offense erupted for more runs than they had
scored anytime this season, and then it looked like they'd
win another one of their patented one run games today,
and as it turns out, they fall to seven and
two in one run games and the Athletics are now
(01:01:06):
one in five in one run games. That was their
first win in a one run game all season. A
heartbreak for the Rangers. We appreciate each and every one
of you staying up so late with us tonight, and
we of course love doing this as a postgame, even
after a game like that. So we'll be back. I
(01:01:26):
guess the next time we'll see you will be the
post game of that San Francisco series. That one won't
be quite so late at night, it'll be in the
afternoon afternoon, so thankfully we won't be up until after
one o'clock in the morning on that one anyway, And
then of course we're there all week next week when
the Rangers return home. So thanks for joining us, We
(01:01:47):
appreciate you, and we'll see you again Sunday for another
edition of the DLLs Rangers podcast.
