It does continue the streak, and I'm telling you not
just the winning streak, but the streak of very stressful games.
Hi there, and welcome to the DLLs Rangers Broadcast. It's
the podcast that is the postgame edition. John Radigan here,
Jeff Wilson joins in a moment, We've got the profit
(01:12):
on today, and Happy Father's Day to each and every
one of you. And I don't mean to say that
these games were stressful, but over the course of the
last like Friday, I had a complete, a full head
of brown hair. Okay, not really know you know better,
but I swear it could have turned a brown head
gray this weekend. The Rangers, of course, had the bullpen
(01:36):
game on Friday. They win it three to one, their
first extra innings game of the season. Yesterday they win
it five to four, and then of course the two
to one victory today with a bullpen that was just
absolutely on fumes and they win that. That's called a sweep.
That's called four wins in a row. That's seven wins
(02:00):
in the last eight games. That's three straight series wins.
You'd say that the Rangers are in a bit of
a role right now, and that's an awfully nice thing.
I mean, the way things were going from the middle
of May until the early part of June, things weren't
looking great.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
But they are headed.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
In the right direction now despite a seeming lack of
scoring against a White Sox pitching staff. And we can
talk more about that momentarily. Jeff joins us soon as
he will tell us what he's heard in the clubhouse
down there after this sweep. But the Rangers do get
it done today and the story of the game, the
(02:40):
hero of the game, and there are many, but the
main one has to be Kumar Rocker. He came up,
got called up, and did exactly what he needed to
do for this team. Mike bask said at the beginning
of the game, he's got to get fifteen outs.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
He got fifteen outs for this team. It was tough.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
You know, at the end that final inning, he had
to down three different bottles, little vials almost, but they're
actually bottles. They're packaged that way, bottles of pickle juice
in order to alleviate the cramping that was going on.
It was a It was a hot and humid day,
even in a stadium that his climate controlled, with the
(03:25):
nerves going, with a huge crowd on hand, and and
then you know, with the opposing team being a bunch
of major league hitters. Yeah, Kumar Rocker got hot, he
got sweaty, he got cramped up, but he got it
done and that was absolutely fantastic. A scoreless outing for him.
(03:45):
As Kamar Rocker goes five innings in this game, and
in that time he allowed the four hits, but no runs,
no earned runs obviously, one walk, and six strikeouts. We
saw him run over to field his position a couple
of different times, even though it didn't become necessary. Although
(04:06):
one of the times when he was cramping Jake Berger,
the ball was hit to first and Jake was close
enough to bag to take care of it himself. But
Kamar was on the way. He was doing the things,
some of the things that were bedeviling him prior to
being sent down. Chris Young said before the game, look,
in our perfect world, we wouldn't be calling him up yet.
(04:29):
But the injury to Tyler Molly has necessitated this. So
Tyler Malley is going to go on the fifteen day
disabled list effective today. And that meant that that allowed
for Kamar Rocker to come back, because once you've been
sent down, you have to be down there for at
(04:49):
least ten days unless there's an injury, and of course
in this case there wasn't that. The way the Rangers
were able to bring Kamar Rocker back, Garson Garavito was
let go today and so we'll talk to Jeff about that.
There's gonna be nobody happier about that than Jeff. He's
(05:09):
been calling for that for a long time. So there
was a plethora of moves prior to this game to
get this team set. And so if you look at
the sweep of the White Sox and say, whatever, it's
just a White Sox, you have to factor all of
those things in. Essentially, you had a bullpen game. Then
(05:33):
you had the bullpen because you went eleven innings yesterday
taxed way more than it was expected to be on
the day that you know, Jacob de Gram was pitching.
You had to use a lot of the bullpen yesterday
and then today. The second hero of this game with
Luke Jackson. Luke Jackson coming in there in three straight
(05:56):
days and basically nothing was biting. He didn't have the
normal break on his curveball, his slider was in biting,
his velo was down. He had to get the bottom
third of the White Sox order with location, location, location,
and he did it. He got it done, a fantastic,
fantastic victory. I saw his interview after the game with
(06:20):
Laura Stickles and he was talking about how all the
guys that pitch today were dogs. He said, they're dogs.
He's a dog too. Dog's a good thing, by the way.
He's a dog too, and it should and does feel
very happy about what happened here this afternoon at Globelife Field.
(06:41):
It was a great way to celebrate a series sweep.
The Rangers definitely wanted to do that, and you do
have to give credit to Will Venible and the Chicago
White Sox because they made this difficult on the Rangers.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
In some cases.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Yesterday the Rangers made it difficult on themselves with two
blown saves. But this White Sox team was game and
they fought hard, and the Rangers were able to fight
just a little bit harder. So offensively, you know nothing
that you love today, evidenced by the two to one score,
(07:18):
but you did get a lot of production from guys
that you don't normally get it from. So let's start
with Ezekiel Duran. Zeke was on base three times today.
Zeke had two doubles and a walk, and Zeke had
an RBI in the game, the first run driven in
in the game and gave the Rangers the one nothing
(07:41):
lead that they would never lose. And that was his
first hit since May May the twenty first so fantastic
game by Ezekiel Durant May eighteenth, actually to be exact,
and so it was a fantastic game by Zeke, and
it was a good enough a win by the Rangers
(08:02):
to get themselves back to five hundred, and that is
where we find that date of five twenty one. The
Rangers haven't been at five hundred since May the twenty first,
so awesome, awesome job. And speaking of long streaks without
that Luke Jackson save that he secured today was his
(08:25):
first save since April the twenty fifth, so lots to
celebrate in this game. Once again, not much of it
was offensive, but like I said, you got critical offensive
performances from guys at critical points, and you got hits
from Marcus Simeon, you know, who hadn't been hitting, from
(08:46):
Jake Berger who hadn't been hitting. Unfortunately, the guys behind
them were unable to pick up those other guys. Four
times in this game the Rangers actually sent the first
first guy, first hit her of the inning actually got
on base, and none of those four were able to score.
And you know, when you've got one on anywhere and
(09:09):
nobody out, you know you want to get that guy home.
You get him over, get him over again, and get
him in. But that didn't happen in those cases. But
the Rangers got two white Sox had only one. And
the next thing, you know, yeah, you feel pretty good
about the way they're playing right now. Four straight wins,
seven out of the last eight. And there have been
(09:31):
plenty of signs throughout this whole thing of offense. Adolice
Garcia back on base three times. I think aduls was
on base today. He had a walk, he had a double,
and he reached on a fielder's choice. But he was
on base three different times today. Nice to see that,
Nice to see him coming out of it. His numbers
(09:52):
are just ridiculous. His average is over three hundred since
his five day layoff. Remember it was two oh eight
when he went on that.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
Five day layoff.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
And maybe the best news out of all of this
is the fact that the Rangers get tomorrow off. They
need this off day. The bullpen more than anything needs
this off day. And for the first time all year.
This is one of those really weird little stats, but
the guys who travel a lot, or who have traveled
a lot like myself, keep track of these. It's the
(10:26):
first time all year the Rangers have played a home
Sunday game and not left on a plane that night
for someplace else.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
So they take.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Tomorrow off at home, only their second off day at
home I think since April, like April fifteenth or something.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
That's two months. Two off days at home in two months.
Not great.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
But they take tomorrow off and then they welcome the
Kansas City Royals coming up later in the show. We'll
talk a little bit about that series. We'll get you
the pitching matchup in that series, and we'll talk about
Royals team that suddenly is struggling. They just got swept
by the lowly Oakland or whatever they're called, Sacramento West
(11:10):
Sacramento Athletics. So the Royals are going to come in
feeling low. The Rangers, conversely, will be feeling very good
about themselves. And should I know, again, I know it's
just the Chicago White Sox that's not a great team.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
But I also know there were lots.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Of things stacked against this Rangers team in this situation.
You know, one of the current concerns is certainly the
fact that the Rangers are beginning to get those what
were inevitable and are now happening, those injuries to the
starting pitchers. You know, obviously we still don't have the
fullest or the clearest picture of Nathan Valdi. Jeff will
(11:51):
give us more information on that. And now Tyler Mallee
joins him on the injured list. Malley is going to
be gone for at least fifteen days. We're talking end
of the month for him, is probably not going to
be until July the fourth or so. That Cody Bradford
is back. Josh Bores, I think they're still thinking about
(12:13):
after the All Star breaker, right at the All Star break,
So there are a lot of injuries to be considered
here right now, and the Rangers are nursing their way
through this. And again it was something we knew was inevitable.
But the fact that Kamar was called right back up
after they really wanted him to get some more seasoning
(12:37):
at the minor league level, that fact is indicative of
the fact that the Rangers are very thin in their
depth at that starting pitcher position. But to be back
to five hundred, interestingly, the Rangers are exact opposite. At home,
they improved to twenty three and thirteen thirty six wins,
(13:01):
right and then I mean thirty six total games, and
then on the road they are thirteen and twenty three,
thirty six, and thirty six. So the reality is, obviously
it's very clear they've got to get better on the road.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
They prove they can.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
They won that series in Washington, they won that series
in Minnesota with tremendous offensive output. So you know, there's
there's it's definitely in them. The offense has to be
more consistent. We do know this, there are no style
points in baseball. So three to one win that the
(13:41):
White Sox had a chance to win in the ninth inning,
a two to one win that the White Sox had
a couple of different chances to take the lead in
it doesn't matter. Rangers got the win. They don't give
you style points in this game. So we'll take the wins.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Let's move forward.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Let's move on and hope that the Rangers can continue
this streak of success and this streak of good play
when they take.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
On the Kansas City Royals. Coming up.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
So, speaking of coming up, we are going to have
Jeff Wilson join us here momentarily as Jeff will give
us the latest from what Bruce Bochi had to say,
what some of the guys in the clubhouse had to say,
that's coming up also an update on just about everybody
and everything that's hobbled in the Rangers lineup right now,
(14:31):
and our cleanup segment, which will include a preview of
that Royal series. It's all coming up. It's the DLLs
Rangers Podcast. Ah, but first we want to tell you
about mon arc money. Monarch money is your friend. Believe me,
you need monarch money, especially this time of year. I
(14:53):
think it's easier when you've got lots of outside activities,
right going here, going there, more eating out, more going
to the beach or to the pool, or on a
two day vacation to Galveston or whatever you might do.
Money is flying out a little bit more this time
of year. Monarch money will not only help you keep
(15:14):
track of your money, but it will help you grow
your wealth.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
That's what they want to do. They want you to
basically not have to.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Worry about your money anymore, and they've got plans in
place to do that. So I find it super important
to just track your funds in any way possible. Monarch
money is the best way possible. They'll keep you honest,
they'll keep you in check, and eventually they'll make you wealthy.
(15:42):
And isn't that really what you would love to have
at this point, So Monarch Money. Go to Monarch Money,
use the code DLLLS and they will take care of
you for six.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
Months for free. So be a fantastic deal for you.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Also, I was out at the ballpark on Friday, and
we've talked about this before, but somebody in the you know,
the gangbang, we call it the group interview session of
Bruce Bochi, they needed their Mando. I think I might
start carrying around that little pack of Mando wipes that
(16:18):
I have and just tell somebody, you know, use a
couple of these under the armpits before the next time
we have one of these. Anyway, it's a fantastic product
that will help you in those situations. We encourage you
to go to Mando dot com and use the code
d l LS and you will get five dollars off
(16:39):
the starter pack, which gives you everything that you see
on the screen if you're watching along on YouTube. Suffice
to say, if you're not, it's everything you need to
smell great, feel great, feel clean, And we encourage you.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
To go to Mando dot com.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
All right, so the rangers, like we say thirty six
and thirty six on the Sea, and this is a
fantastic way to celebrate Father's.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Day with a victory. Jeff.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Now, you know, I've been kind of saying to everybody, Hey,
it's uh, you know, it's just a White Sox.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Oh hey, there aren't style points, man. They slept them.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Right, A three one game, a two to one game.
There were a lot of subplots for the Rangers too.
This was a good suite.
Speaker 6 (17:26):
I mean, I think anybody would take three close wins
over two blowout wins and a loss. I mean, this
is three wins. Who cares? You know, you you play
the schedule in front of you. You try to win
the games they're ahead of you. And the Rangers did that.
And yeah, it took a little more than maybe you
were expecting, but you know, especially Saturday, the White Sox
(17:48):
did everything in their power to give the Rangers the game,
and they did. The Rangers and turn did everything in
their power to not win it. But they didn't win it.
So Hey, three and ohero four straight wins, seven of eight.
They're back at five hundred, their half game out of
the wild card standings. I mean, this is this is
(18:09):
when the Rangers are supposed to get healthy. This series.
Now the Royal Series will be a little tougher, but
they're struggling right now, are one hundred percent struggling. And
you go to Pittsburgh and Baltimore, you think, okay, those
are probably last place teams have a chance to do
some good there. This is a big stretch and you know,
it's a story I just wrote. I didn't even mention
the schedule, but just kind of where the team is.
(18:30):
Everybody feels like this is trending the right way, even
though the pitching staff is dealing with some injuries right now.
The bullpen's worn't out. The offense, despite scoring twice today,
has been terrific the last nine or ten games. It's
really the era was pointing up. And I don't care
if you know, don't complain about a win. You know,
(18:54):
never complain about a win. I think is the right
tenor there. I mean, you know, especially the team that
again has underperformed and dragged along and and driven people crazy. Well,
guess what they're they're back to even steven. They have
a chance to to kind of take off here. And
so that's that was my that's my takeaway from the series.
(19:15):
As far as today. You know, Bruce Bochi commended the
bullpen what they did. I think, I think, you know,
cole Win probably not the role the Rangers envisioned when
they drafted him or even after the twenty twenty two seasons,
but he's getting he's getting big out. I mean, that
(19:35):
was a that was a big performance today. You know,
if the bullpen is out of juice, they had nothing today,
and uh for for them to prevail on this one
with you know, a guy who some people thought was
a bust as a draft pick, with Luke Jackson, who
you can some people might also say it was a
(19:57):
Rangers draft bust. But guess what they got. They got
nine big outs or eight big outs and and and
the Rangers ended up winning the ball game. So hats
off to the bullpen. Cabar Rocker, you know, was was
pretty good. You know, he's I'd like to see it
against a better lineup. I don't know that he got
(20:18):
out a bunch of major league hitters today, if I'm
being perfectly honest, But he got out the batters he
had to get out.
Speaker 7 (20:24):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (20:25):
He fought through the camp the cramping issue. Turns out
he had had five total pickle juice shots there because
he had two when the Rangers batted in the fourth
and then he had two on three on the mound.
He just wasn't able to shake the cramping. And it's
(20:45):
something that you know, he had to leave a start
earlier this year because of hand cramps, and he said
at the time that he'd had too many power drinks,
not power drinks, energy drinks, and so he needs to
find something because you could you could tell he was
working hard. The powder blue shirt suddenly has a darker
(21:06):
hue of shirt as it was soaked with his sweat.
It's a big it's a big man out there, and
you know, it's seventy four degrees inside here and he's
sweating like it was one hundred. So that's something that
he needs to work on. But overall, you know, he
did things better today. Didn't have a ton of base runners,
but he held him better. He got over to first
(21:27):
base on a play with the cramping, you know, an
injury to insult, but he got over there. So you know,
I don't want to get too excited about it just
because of again it was the White Sox. However, I
think that he's got a chance to to hold down
a rotation spot because the Rangers are really kind of
(21:48):
in no man's land.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
You know.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
I talked afterwards to Nathan Valdi. I need to update
my story, but he's going to throw a bullpen this week.
He's going to throw live batting practice Saturday at Pittsburgh.
At least that's what he says. The plan is. Chris
Young kind of differed and said that Evaldi was going
to throw live batting practice next So we'll have to
see how that goes. But it may not be until
(22:10):
the Baltimore series now when Evaldi returns, but we'll see.
Maybe it does change, maybe he feels great and they
just say the hell of it, let's throw live and
get him back for Pittsburgh. But any event, there are
a couple opportunities here for Kamar Rocker to, you know,
maybe grab a little bit of a foothold at least
until Malley or Cody Bradford comes back.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
Sure, let's get back if we could profit to that.
I love Misty the Leon super chat there. We appreciate
you so much. Leon as always always by the channel
and always supporting us. And the question Leon's wanting to
us addressed, wanting us to address here, Jeff is well,
why didn't media outlets report adules walk off.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Was his sixth with the Rangers.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
Sure, it was his sixth regular season walk off, but
he also had game one of the twenty twenty three
so seven combined.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
Yeah don't, I don't.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
We weren't reporting it yesterday. So I mean sometimes sometimes though,
you do see those statistics and don't realize that that
they are only regular season statistics, right, correct.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
And you know the game notes today six walkoff hits
tied for ninth and Rangers history second most. It's twenty
twenty one. These totals do not include his walk up
homeer in the twenty twenty three World Series Game one
versus Arizona. So there you go. There's your answer.
Speaker 5 (23:39):
Yeah, yep, there you go.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
But we always appreciate you Leon very much, So thanks
for hanging out with us.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
And that look that was in some ways, Jeff, as
bad as that.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
I felt terrible about that game overall, except the end, right,
And well I shouldn't say that the ground part was fine,
and then but then the things just kept going and
you knew the bullpen was getting taxed, but then you
love the way it ended.
Speaker 5 (24:06):
Uh, and you're sure.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
We're hoping for a little bit of And I know
momentum is only as good as the next day starting pitcher,
but still you were hoping for a little bit more
of maybe some momentum carried through from that one to
this game today.
Speaker 6 (24:22):
Yeah, I don't you know, you're right And and Aaron Savali,
I would call him a great starting pitcher by any scratch,
and especially with the ordeal he's been through the last
week where he demanded a or asked for a trade
from the Probers and they're like, okay, we'll just send
you over to the White Sox. Take that, you son
(24:43):
of a bitch.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Careful what you wish.
Speaker 6 (24:46):
Yeah, so, uh, you know, but he you know, his
velocity seems down to me from what I remember it.
And uh, I mean, it's entirely possible have him confused
with other bygone Tampa Bay Ray starters, but uh it
was it was effective enough, I guess. And you know
the lineup with with with Duran, who had a great game, Yeah,
(25:09):
you know, a little bit uh watered down, maybe trying
to get Josh younga men will break burger. It was
good to see, uh that hit that he had there
in the eighth because he'd he'd had a rough go
this weekend, and you know, uh, just trying to you know,
I don't I don't think anybody here is willing to say, oh,
(25:31):
our offense is fixed, because it's not. But there are
going to be days where you run into a guy
you can't hit or a guy who's great, and you've
got to figure out how to win those games. And
so I guess, you know, the takeaway is that the
Rangers have played so many close games, maybe they finally
learned how to win them. You know, I mean the
winning run what turned out to be the difference maker.
(25:52):
Can't want a sacrifice fly, you know, the Rangers kind
of manufactured or run there. You know, those don't extend
the innings necessarily, but it's better than nothing. And you know,
you're talking about the team that went four for twenty two,
was it yesterday, four for twenty three with runners in
scoring position, Yeah, which is a just a shocking number.
(26:15):
But they still managed to win the game. And you know,
they scored a run on an air, they scored a
run on a wild pitch, They avoided trouble in the
tenth when the damn pitcher had a bat for the
White Sox because they were out of position players. Just
one of those things. So yeah, the off the offense, though,
(26:36):
big picture wise, you know, is more consistent. That's that's
going to happen. You know, you're going to get shut
down every once in a while. But if you look
at the you look at the National Series, they got
shut down in the first game, the Twins series, the
second game, not great necessarily the series, and still win
ball games. So I do think that the offense is
trending the right way. And again, don't don't don't scoff
(27:00):
at three w's.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
No, that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
Don't scoff at seven of the last eight in the
win column and three straight series victories, right, those are
all things that again in the middle of May, the
middle of May through the first of June, you know,
everybody it's a fan of the Rangers was just you know,
yearning for and now they're delivering. And like Jeff said,
(27:24):
some of the struggles early in the season had to
do with the fact that, you know, early they were
playing more teams that were over five hundred than I
think anybody in baseball. And now they get a chance
here to play some teams that are under five hundred,
and you know, Nationals included.
Speaker 5 (27:42):
I don't know where the.
Speaker 4 (27:43):
Twins exactly were when we got them, but you know
this team included.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
Pittsburgh's going to be included, you know.
Speaker 4 (27:50):
So and a team like Kansas City, who will talk
more about later, who is struggling mightily right now, having
been swept by the by the athletics of all people.
So we've got that story yet to talk about. We
want to get to some of the updates and some
more specific details that I know Jeff has gotten in
(28:11):
the clubhouse today about guys and how they're progressing and
what the next step is. He mentioned what's happening with Evaldi,
Let's talk about spores, Let's talk specifically about Bradford. Let's
get more of your thoughts in the game in this game.
If you'd love to, we'd love to have you. It's
all coming up. It's the DLLs Rangers podcast. Oh and
(28:36):
it is time to talk about game Time and my
friend Nicole. So many beautiful concerts that are coming to
the area right now, and we encourage you to go
to game Time and get tickets. Now that said, the
first thing, the lead on the Game Time app right
now is the Rangers Royals series, and you can still
(28:57):
get tickets. You can get tickets for the Wednesday game,
it says here for twenty six dollars. So there's all
kinds of deals there. The thing about game time is
they're guaranteed, right, there's so many fewer fees. There's hardly
any fees involved, and you will have the opportunity to
(29:19):
find your seat that you want, right. They give you
this map and you can see exactly where the seat is.
And again, it doesn't matter quite as much at Global
Life Field as it did at Globalife Park because you
knew if you'd ever been there before that you know
there were some seats in the sun at certain times
of the day. I don't have to worry about that
(29:39):
too much here, but you still like to know where
you're sitting game time. Go to the app, use the
code DLLs twenty bucks off your first purchase with the
best secondary market ticket app out there.
Speaker 6 (29:54):
Yeah, and go ahead and take the money you're saving
there and head over to Saturday Knee On. Our friends
who the college buddies who started this, well, you know,
a Neon sign company, but they're not just it's not
just the old gas signs that get hot and burning
when you touch them, and are fragile and easy to break.
These are a led Neon sign, so they're durable, they
(30:15):
last forever, they're they're easy to handle when they're on,
it's not hot, and and and they're cheap seventy five bucks.
And Saturday Neon has has partnered with them around fifty
Division I programs and college sports. A lot of them
in our area, a lot of them in the Big twelve.
(30:36):
So they'll even make you one if you want to
have one custom made, they'll do that for you. So
they're there are friends. They could be your friend for
your man space or man cave whatever they're called, just
your office or bar area. Maybe you want one in
the bedroom whatever. I'm not going to judge anyway, Saturday
Neeon dot com use a codells you get ten percent off.
Speaker 5 (31:01):
All right.
Speaker 4 (31:02):
So some of these pitching injuries, Jeff and we knew
they were inevitable, and they've begun to come.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
Nathan Valdi, you know, I.
Speaker 4 (31:08):
Think it was you, and I remember it was the
day we were talking to John Gray and I said, well,
you know it's not if, but when guys start to
get hurt and then that night Nathan was pitching, and
I'll be darned, I wasn't trying to jinx him, but
apparently I had. He hasn't been able to come back yet.
Now we have the news on Tyler Malley, which was,
you know, we pretty much knew was coming as of yesterday,
(31:32):
but it was sort of the lead of today. This
roster move Rocker for malle So what's the expectation here.
This shoulder fatigue has put him on the injured list
I think three or four different times already in his career.
Speaker 6 (31:48):
Yeah, you know, he h it's a different injury from
what he had last year. Last year it turned out
to be a stress reaction, which is, you know, essentially
a stress fracture in his shoulder, and so this isn't
entirely different. Chris Young said, fatigue, and he said a
little bit of an impingement. All right, So you have
an impingement. That's what Kamar Rocker had earlier this year
(32:09):
after the start with at at Sacramento. All right, that
took him five weeks. The Rangers hope this isn't quite
like that, but they're they're just going to wait for
it to get out, you know, it's got a whatever
it is, has to be gone before it resumes throwing.
One person told me it would be more than fifteen
(32:31):
days that he's out, So I think while they hope
it's the minimum, I think they are braced for more
than that. And yeah, the kind of the old rule
of thumb is for every day you're down, that's how
many days it takes for you to rebuild. So if
he's down fifteen, you had fifteen, that's thirty. Yeah, that
kind of puts you right around the All Star break,
(32:51):
so hopefully sooner than that. But in the meantime, you know,
Cody Bradford is expected back in early July. Uh Gray
is going to be more like late July early August,
so you know you're you're gonna, in theory get Bradford
back again. What we said in the first part of
my first segment about uh A Vauldie on the road trip,
(33:16):
it sounds like is the best timeline. I have to
clear that up on Tuesday with with the guys after
the off day. But you know, but you're right, it's
not it's not it's not an if it's a win.
And so if you're wondering why they're limiting Jacob de
(33:37):
Grom to round eighty pitches. Well, you know this is
probably why you you you know that, because they're in
similar low places. Malley and de Grom both coming off
their first season of Tommy John surgery. So uh, de
Gram says, he feels great and he's just gonna he
wants to He's not worried about going out and throwing
(34:00):
one hundred pitches. He wants to make his starts. And
right now you could argue that Jacob Degron is the
Rangers' most durable starter.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
Yeah, amazingly.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
And Mally uh was the winning pitcher in one of
those sixteen run games in Minnesota.
Speaker 5 (34:16):
I can't remember.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
Was there any indication after the game that he was
having some some issues.
Speaker 6 (34:23):
No, I think we were all surprised yesterday when Bruce
Bochy said, I, we're kind of watching Mally here now.
He wasn't great, but he threw more than ninety pitches.
He did give up four runs, yeah in the in
the start, and maybe his stuff was down a little bit.
Speaker 5 (34:40):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (34:40):
He you know, he worked pretty hard in the Tampa
Bay start also, so you know, a couple a couple
of tough starts to start the month and maybe maybe
it's okay, you know, maybe maybe you know, with in
this day and age, this is just going to start
being the norm. You know, team the are hyper sensitive
(35:01):
to two injuries to their investments and also their chances
and if they're you know, the Rangers again feel like
they have a chance. Well, you know, you're gonna need
Tyler Malley, a good Tyler Malley down the stretch. So it's, uh,
it's not necessarily a precautionary move because again it sounds
like there is something in there. But the Raiders did
(35:23):
consider just skipping a start and seeing what would happen.
But instead they're gonna they're gonna go ahead and pull
the plug here for you know, maybe up to a month.
Speaker 4 (35:33):
So Cody Bradford was throwing pitches to in sort of
one of those simulation type games. Uh, to Souna and
to Ezekiel Duran yesterday and and uh, what how do
you come out of that?
Speaker 5 (35:47):
How how do you feel today? What's going on there?
Speaker 6 (35:51):
Yeah, that all's good. The next thing could be for
him should be a rehab start. You know, they want
to get them to five innings and they think they
can do it. Fourth of July so, but you got
to start soon, you know. He can't take much longer,
and with the team headed out of town next weekend,
there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for him to
(36:12):
throw live batting practice anyway, So maybe they could do
it again, maybe use a live batting practice to replace
a rehab start. But he's he's headed the right way.
He should be back pretty soon here. And again he
doesn't he doesn't feel any discomfort with the elbow after
(36:33):
throwing fastballs and change ups and his curveballs and sliders,
So h that that seems like it's on the right track.
And he he's also announced I think yesterday or his
wife did, that they're gonna be parents. They're gonna have
the first year coming. So maybe he's got a little
more to pitch for me now, I don't.
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Know absolutely, And if I read correctly, Jeff Bores also
threw to those two guys yesterday.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
He did.
Speaker 6 (37:03):
Not not as many pitches as Cody threw. It was
just one inning, and you know, the the shape of
the pitches, everything looks good. He just needs more velocity
with his fastball, and that's going to come as he
builds more arm strength and Also, Mike maddags point out
to me adrenaline getting back into games. Yeah, we'll add
(37:26):
a mild power too, So he's he's a little further away,
but I think a rehab assignment isn't too far off.
He probably has a few more lives to throw before
then the partying on what probably will be a little
bit longer of an assignment, just to make sure he
gets the outings. And uh, again is building that velocity,
(37:47):
but he's also made to the be to the point
where he's gonna have to learn how to pitch with it.
But the from what I understand, uh, the curve, the
curveball is still really really good. It's just he's going
to have to you know, can't make as many mistakes
or get away with much with his fastball if it's
only zipping in there at ninety four ninety five and
seven ninety seven ninety eight.
Speaker 5 (38:07):
Sure.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
And then one thing about Cody, and I think we
know this, the fact that they're trying to work him
up to five innings there. Absolutely the plan is to
bring him back as a starter and have if nothing else,
if everybody else is healthy by the time he comes back,
you then have some starting depth.
Speaker 6 (38:25):
Yeah, well, you know exactly that he will be able
to make a spot start even if he has sent
to the bullpen. You're you're kind of looking at things
here the next couple of weeks, and if he does
come back, it seem like Rocker would be the guy
who he would replace. If Rocker is sputtering at all,
(38:46):
or if you can't replicate duplicate what he did today,
you know, because the other guys don't haven't done anything
to deserve being dropped from the rotation. You know, obviously
you're not going to get rid of the grom evolved
the if he's healthy's in the rotation. And then Lighter
has been fine, of course, has been fantastic relative to expectations,
(39:10):
He's been amazing. And so you know, you have some
guys there who have earned the right to maintain their spot.
So if if Mally's not ready when Bradford ish and
the Rangers want Bradford to start, then I would think
would be Rocker who loses the spot. But Cody's willing
(39:32):
to do anything. He would you know, he'd pitch and relief.
He has no problem with that, and then maybe maybe
you know, this gives them the Rangers opportunity to maybe
go into the All Star break with a six man rotation.
You know, it seems like they want to give guys
extra rests or building extra rest in for guys as
often as possible. We'll just make it official, tear off
(39:53):
the band aid and go with the six man rotation
and then kind of reset things at the All Star break.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
Speaking of Patrick KORbin, how amazing that he was out
there in the bullpen sort of just in case, and
Mike Bassett was speculating that what and this happens, and
it has happened to Mike.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
It was his day to.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Throw a bullpen, you know, it was Corbyn's day to
throw a bullpen, and they probably said to him, hey,
you know, don't throw your bullpen until the end of
the game, and then there's a chance we might have
to use you. Did you talk to Maddox or Corbyn
or anybody about that.
Speaker 6 (40:31):
I did not, but that wouldn't have surprised me at all.
I think I was surprised though, that Chris Martin didn't pitch. Yeah,
so I wonder if he's had some herds, more pops
or you know whatever. I thought that maybe he would
be available, but you knew Garcia wasn't going to be
available or Milner for sure. Armstrong didn't warm up in
(40:55):
the eighth even though he threw the three innings on Friday,
so that was a little surprising. We were told even
that Lats was available despite what he did yesterday. But
Chris Young did mention before the game that, uh, you know,
to expect if if Cole Winn got in the game,
it would be in a high liverage situation. And that's
the that's the highest leverage situation he's pitched in his career.
(41:19):
He also, you know, he came into the seventh inning
with a runner on base, and the Rangers are a
little hesitant to do that, but when you don't have
any choice, they did it today. It worked out.
Speaker 5 (41:31):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (41:31):
You know the two hits that the White Sox got
off of him in the eighth, Berger probably should have
made that play at first. The one up the middle
by by Symbion was just a tough play. Yeah, the
hard the hardest hit ball of the inning was the
one the line out to end it. You know, that
was that was the only ball I think they hit
(41:52):
well the whole inning. So but he got out of it.
His ERI is still zero. He's still gonna have the mustache,
but it's encouraging what he's done and the way he's trending.
Speaker 4 (42:04):
Yeah, I heard you talking to him Friday night about
the mustache kind of having a life of its own here,
you know.
Speaker 6 (42:09):
Yeah, apparently the girl from the fiance or girlfriend likes it.
But he's he's ready to get rid of it. I
don't know that though he wants to give up a
run to do that. He's perfectly fine keep keeping it
as long as he's not giving up any runs.
Speaker 4 (42:26):
Yeah, I'd rather get one of them big old Wyatt
mustaches if he asked. There you go, keep that, keep
that e RI at zero. So, uh, yeah, that's fantastic.
And uh they you know, this bullpen on fumes to
have come through like this, and and uh, Laura talked
to Luke Jackson after the game, and of course understandably
(42:47):
he was.
Speaker 5 (42:49):
So did you see it?
Speaker 4 (42:50):
Yeah, he was super excited, and he had a dog
for everybody.
Speaker 5 (42:54):
Everybody's got a little dog in him. Well, hell, Luke
Jackson's got a little dog in him too, doesn't.
Speaker 6 (42:59):
He He does, you know? And I think you know,
Luke gets a bad rap. You know, I'm I'm I
think that. You know, he gave up the home run
on opening Day. I think that kind of set the tone,
and then he was great, and then he gave up,
gave up a lead at Oakland, and then he gave
up the lead at Yankee Stadium and lost his job.
(43:20):
And now you know, everyone like, oh god, Luke Jackson,
he's terrible. You know what, He's a veteran. He can
get outs, knows how to get outs and has has
been doing it. You know, yesterday he was he ended
up being charged with the allowing the tie in run,
but uh, you know, Garcia came in and gave up
a hit to the pinch hitter Taylor. But Luke's fine,
(43:44):
all right, and you see what a good guy he is.
You know, he told in that interview, I'm not going
to talk about me, is talking about everybody else. And
then you know, the first guy you mentioned was Cole Wins,
So Cole Cole apparently is the big dog in this group.
But yeah, everybody had some dog in them.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
Yeah that's great.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
And I did like the fact that he was saying,
you know, the bullpen is really coming together, and that's
something when you put one together as they did this offseason.
Speaker 5 (44:13):
That can't just happen. It's not automatic.
Speaker 4 (44:16):
It takes a little time for a bullpen, uh to
figure out who it is and and how its personality
is going to be.
Speaker 5 (44:23):
It's generally quirky jet but but it.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
Takes a it takes a minute to get to uh,
to the you know, find the level of quirkiness that
works for this particular pen.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Yeah, well, and I know we got to go to
ads here in a second. But when you have veteran
guys who've done it before, they can suck it up
and get you an out or get you an inny
and and find a way to when when the team
really really needs to find a find a way to
do it. And uh, you know, they'll all enjoy the
off day tomorrow and maybe the Rangers will be like, hey,
(44:56):
let's try to avoid certain guys on Tuesday. But they
know how to to do it, and so that's kind
of a veteran thing there. They know how to find
that extra extra amount of juice to get out when
maybe a younger guy wouldn't know how to battle how
his stuff is affected by fatigue.
Speaker 4 (45:14):
Yeah, that's exactly what Luke Jackson did today, and it's
one of the reasons we're sitting here talking about a
sweep of the.
Speaker 5 (45:21):
Chicago White Sox. More coming up.
Speaker 4 (45:23):
It's kind of a clean up, postgame cleanup segment, if
you will. As we wrap this one up. Next it's
the DLS Rangers Podcast.

Speaker 4 (48:40):
All right, so let's talk first about this series against
these Kansas City Royals. And we have mentioned a couple
of times already that this Royals team Jeff is struggling
mightily and they've they've lost three in a row to
the athletics, and so yeah, obviously again, just like this
white Socks bunch, you can't you know, just say, okay,
(49:03):
well those are automatic wins. But you have to feel
pretty good about the fact you're coming off and off
day and they're coming in here kind of leaking oil.
And you know, I'm saying there's a chance yet, Sure
there is.
Speaker 6 (49:16):
They've lost six in a row. I mean, they you know,
they're they're they are definitely on fume. So they are
they are going to throw three pretty good guys Thought Lugo,
Chris Bubick and Michael Waka.
Speaker 7 (49:28):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (49:28):
They're without col Reagan's right now. But their their issue
is offense. You know, they're they're not a lot better
than the Rangers. They're probably in the same neighborhood as
far as you know, things like runs scored and and
uh awful awful stuff like that. They get very little
production from their outfielders.
Speaker 4 (49:47):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (49:47):
They still have the great Bobby Wood junior. Uh, Salvador Perez,
the veteran, he's kind of having a stinker of a year.
Jack kagleone, the the young stud who hits it a mile.
He's up with the club. So they have all they
do have some guys that can hurt you, but they
and they have some guys on the mountain that can
stop you. So this may be this may be a
(50:09):
good time to bet the under. Speaking of Vegas go
you know, yeah, might be looking at some two to
ones and three to two's here also.
Speaker 4 (50:16):
Yeah, and with the six game losing streak, the Royals
have gotten themselves to under five hundred. They're at thirty
four and thirty eight now, so they had been kind
of flirting with that five hundred mark in a division
where in that American League Central, you know, there was
a time of course the White Sox, I don't think
I've ever been over five hundred, but there was a
time for the first couple of months of the year
(50:37):
where every team was over five hundred. So anyway, they're
not there now and they're four games under, So it's
something you hope the Rangers can take advantage of.
Speaker 5 (50:48):
The reality is, if.
Speaker 4 (50:50):
They get a if they get a series win, right,
you just need to win two out of three at home,
split on the road, and you're going to have a
really good season. Now that the Rangers are back to
e right, thirty six and thirty six, that really needs
to be more of the recipe. I did bring up,
Jeff the irony of their sort of the symmetrical nature
(51:10):
of their records. They're twenty three and thirteen at home,
the Rangers thirteen and twenty three on the road. So
and that's after winning two road series on the last trip.
Speaker 6 (51:21):
Well, I mean, hey, that heads up to five hundred,
you know, And yeah it does.
Speaker 5 (51:27):
Yeah, the.
Speaker 6 (51:29):
You know, it's it's kind of interesting. We had the
opportunity to speak to Chris Young today, who you know,
debrief is owned some of the injury things, and also
he had been on a national radio show and that
show tweeted out. Chris Young was just on talking about
the Rangers at the trade deadline and we're you know,
we'll be in there. So I asked him about it,
(51:51):
and he seemed to think that the he wasn't the
one who generated the trade deadline talk. But if you know,
this is a big much for the Rangers right now,
I mean, yeah, I've been mentioning it for about a
week now. The trade deadline is six weeks away. Uh,
you know, you probably have about five weeks two get
(52:14):
yourself in position to be a player there, and that
you know, you have the All Star break, so you'll go,
you'll go four or five days without a game, so
really it's like four weeks. But you know they have
some games here there series they need to win and
put themselves convinced Chris Young that they need to be
(52:35):
buyers at the deadline, and you know it's it's like,
all right, so what are thinking about? Well, you'd think
a closer, but you know, maybe it's maybe a bat
I don't know, maybe a starter at this point. But
he he he, He is very bullish on the team,
and I think that's probably the the best thing to
(52:56):
take away from it is he still believes, wants to believe,
and if their in position, he's going to be willing
to do stuff to make sure that that the Rangers
improved for the final two months.
Speaker 4 (53:09):
Yeah, and that the one I did see that and
listen briefly to some of that audio, and the line
seemed to be basically, you know, if we're you know,
if we're in it, if.
Speaker 5 (53:19):
We're in the hunt, we'll get bullpen help.
Speaker 4 (53:23):
Is that what what you were referencing with Chris? Is
that what he was talking about.
Speaker 6 (53:29):
Well, I didn't hear the show, so apparently Jim Bowden,
the former Big League GM was the interviewer and said, well,
I think you guys need a high leverage on Chris Is, Like,
you know, everybody probably needs a leverage on for their bullpen. Yeah,
so you know, but but yeah, I mean the Rangers do.
(53:51):
Now they are you know, sports is going to come back, uh.
Speaker 5 (53:56):
You know, and.
Speaker 6 (53:58):
It'll be interesting to see what adding spores in there
would do, and then what adding I don't know. Again,
there there will be dozens of relievers available, guys that
you would not think of as leverage arms, and they'll
come in kind of like as I've said in the past,
Jake Diekman and Sam Dyson, h we're added in fifteen
(54:21):
and just overhauled the Rangers bullpen, even though they weren't closer,
you know, Sean Toollison remained the closer, but those two
guys came and thrown upper nineties and just kind of
changed the whole dynamic of the thing. So that's that's
that's what would happen, I would think, And then they'll
look at other areas where maybe they can upgrade offensively.
(54:44):
But again, there's not a lot of replacing guys in
this lineup. You know, they're all either high paid or
highly coveted pros, you know, prospects slash young players. And
so I think that you might be looking at, uh,
maybe a certain kind of hitter, maybe a right handed
(55:04):
right you know, right handed hitting an outfield or something
like that, somebody who has an agg forgetting on base.
But I would I would assume then that bullpen would
be the number one priority.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
Sure, yeah, And of course, I mean because again, you've
got to know or feel like you know that you
have you know, they're not They're not one hundred percent
confident in Robert Garcia right now, he's still learning the craft, right,
They're not one hundred percent confident, as they indicated in
Luke Jackson. Chris Martin's better in that eighth inning role, right.
(55:40):
So yes, if you can get help for that, especially
at the back end, of course you will. That said,
those guys don't grow on trees either.
Speaker 6 (55:51):
No, And and some of the guys that you thought
would be available at the start of the year are
now pitching for good teams. You know, I think I
think a name that everybody's been talking about ranger wise
for a couple of years, as David Bednar he seems
to have he seems to have corrected things with the Pirates.
He's still their closer. They sent him down earlier in
the years, but he's back and saving games, which a
(56:14):
few opportunities the Pirates present for him. But he's always
a guy. If the Cardinals were to fall apart, then
Hellsley would be a guy. So yeah, again it's you
can find a guy on every team's roster. I mean,
the name White Sox have a couple of guys that
throw it pretty well you might be interested in. So
(56:35):
you see what happens here. But again, this next stretch,
you know, if the Rangers don't get going, you know,
if they continue to languish in our four or five
games behind below five hundred, and maybe they have you know,
six teams in front of him in the wild card,
(56:55):
and maybe the division lead is six or seven games
an you kind of wonder, I don't know, you know,
but if they are a little bit closer, a little
bit more in striking range than I think, you'll see
the Rangers make some moves at the deadline.
Speaker 4 (57:11):
Yeah, and don't look now, but the Astros have also
won five in a row, right, you know, and they're
forty one and thirty. I mean, they're eleven games over
five hundred and I guess that's five and a half
better than where the Rangers are right now, who have
Seattle's in second. But anyway, the point is, somehow, in
some way, the Astros let all their high priced guys
(57:34):
go and they're still figuring out a way to get
it done.
Speaker 6 (57:37):
Yeah, and they've also played a pretty good schedule at
this point. They've fared pretty well against teams above five hundred.
And you know, they just took care of the Twins
this weekend. After the Rangers took two out of three, well,
the Astros went and swept them. So that's kind of
a kick in the shorts. But you know, the Rangers
still have ten games I think against the Astros, so
(58:00):
that you know, they have a couple of series left
against the the Mariners, so there are opportunities in front
of them too. You know, vanquished their current conquerors. I guess.
Speaker 5 (58:16):
That.
Speaker 6 (58:16):
You know, it's it's it's but it's not like it's
not like they're great teams. You know that Rats might
be playing well right now, but they have a lot
of injuries in their rotation and are getting contributions from
some guys who the league will probably figure out here.
You know, they're still not getting a lot from Christian Walker,
who of course hit a three run homer against the
(58:37):
Rangers in a in a win. But uh, it's not
the same aster as team, and I think that I
think that they're susceptible to being caught here. And then
the Mariners are still deemless of pitching injuries, still can't hit,
so that I mean there there's there's plenty of opportunity
for the Rangers.
Speaker 5 (58:52):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (58:53):
So anyway, the Rangers took advantage of their opportunities this
weekend and swept the Chicago White Sox. It's what we
were saying on Thursday that they needed to do, and
you hate to say that because sweeps are hard. The
Ringers pulled it off with a two run victory and
two one run victories, including their first extra inning game
(59:14):
of the season.
Speaker 5 (59:15):
That one was last night.
Speaker 4 (59:16):
This week is gonna be fun and cool and kind
of crazy. We're gonna be here Monday and Tuesday at
one o'clock doing our normal show. On Wednesday, it's kind
of like a White Elephant type day where I think
Jeff's on the Mavericks Show.
Speaker 5 (59:31):
I'm on the Cowboys show.
Speaker 4 (59:33):
I think you got Jeff Cavanaugh and Bobby Corella from
our Cowboys and MAVs show, respectively, on this show, so
it's gonna be it's gonna be fun. And I know
Stein among others, will be on this on the Stars show,
so it's gonna be really fun during the week, and
then Thursday, I don't know what we got. We got
something else wacky going on Thursday anyway, but we'll Thursday.
(59:56):
We got a postgame show, so it won't that won't
really affect us, so but anyway, we'll be there. We'll
be talking Rangers with you each and every day one
o'clock time for Rangers talk on the DLLs Rangers podcast.
Speaker 5 (01:00:10):
We'll see you next time.
