We've got spirit, Yes we do. We've got spirit. How
about you? It's Spirit Week here at DLLs. We're trying
to fire you up and we're feeling it. Hope you
are too. It's the DLS Rangers podcast starting now. Maybe
(01:16):
that upward trend contribute to our spirited miss right now.
Missed us says it feels like summer, and it does.
It feels like the boys of Summer are finally playing
like the boys of summer. As we welcome you into
the DLLs Sports Studios. It's the DLS Rangers Podcast. John
Radigan here, Jeff Wilson there, and it is Spirit Week
(01:40):
here at DLS. We're happy to be a part of it.
Today is the day when it is our chance to
show off our favorite DLLs merch and it's interesting, Jeff,
we did not compare notes. Yeah, but we both have
a similarly you know design shirt.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
Well, you know, full being fully transparent. Here, my favorite
shirt's in the wash. Is it really okay? The Texas
shoe or the gue ard. I can't choose between the two,
but I like this one. This is actually a cowboy shirt,
not a Ranger shirt, and this is the Cowboys d
OLS flag shirt and it was clean. John, I know
(02:21):
you got the wings flags.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
I got the wings. And again my thought is this
one represents our group. So with the flag visible, people
can see what this is all about for a long
way coming. So anyway, today's favorite t Shirt Day. Tomorrow's fun,
It's Mystery Guest Day, and I've arranged a mystery guest
for Jeff Musical Chair Show on Wednesday, which means Jeff
(02:47):
will beyond MAVs, I'll be on Cowboys, so that's going
to be wild and fun. And then Big Brothers Big
Sisters Day on Thursday. And along the lines of the
Big Brothers and Big Sister we want you to know
that all this week we're teaming with Big Brothers and
Big Sisters of America. In fact, we've joined forces with them.
(03:08):
It's an incredible group that creates life changing mentorship for
kids across the country. We have a goal this week,
our Spirit Week, of ten thousand dollars, and we'd like
to smash right through that. You can help. Please donate
if you would, using the link on the video description,
And if you want to make an even bigger impact,
(03:29):
you could also become a big a Big brother or
a Big Sister, and that that link would be something
we'd appreciate you utilizing on this day because in all week,
because I think that goal is actually modest. I agree
with the writer of that little promo I read. I
think we can do better than ten grand and help
(03:51):
a wonderful, wonderful cause. So, yeah, it feels like summer missed.
I agree with you. And maybe that's because there's a
little joy in my bill, Jeff. I mean, we can
we can feel good about the way the Rangers are
not only you know, achieving or you know, succeeding or
the results, but actually the method of achieving those results.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
Yeah, they're they're they're playing baseball. You know, you look
at I know they only scored two runs yesterday, but
one of the runs the difference maker was on a
sacrifice fly There they are hitting the long ball, which
is always fun to see. But you know, three three
hits in an inning, you know, that's that's what a
novel concept, you know, right, or two in a sacrifice
(04:36):
fly er, a single, a walk, and you know, an
aggressive read on a ball in the dirt and a
ground out. Hey, you know, there are a lot of
ways to score runs, and the Rangers seem to have
figured out or have been reminded of that. And maybe
that's Brett Boone, maybe that's Bruce Bochie, whatever it is,
you're you're definitely seeing it. I think hitters are using
(04:56):
all fields better. So the offense is doing so. The
starting pitching has remained very, very good. I know there's
some concerns that I've seen that Ali was losing it. Well,
we now kind of have an explanation as to why,
and that maybe the pitching's gonna regress. There's always going
to regress. I still think it's going to regress. But
even if it regresses, let's say half a run, you
(05:19):
know what, it's still gonna be one of the best
rotations and in baseball, and the bullpen keeps figuring out
a way to get it done. So and the good
news is help. His help is on the way.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, there's no doubt about that, and that we're gonna
get into more of that in the timetable of things
like that. But this streak, you know, we talked about
it multiple different times over the course of the last
week or so. The streak really started on the last
homestand when the Rangers played Saint Louis, right and they
had lost a game where Josh Smith let off the
(05:55):
game against Toronto with a single and then they got
no hit. I mean, it wasn't officially a no hitter,
but it might as well have been. Twenty seven up
and twenty seven down after that Josh Smith single. It
was abysmal, man, it was such a depressing game. It
was a game for which we did a postgame show
(06:16):
and we were just beside ourselves. It was just it
was awful. And Jeff was in the clubhouse that night.
It was a home game and everybody showed up and
he felt like the mood was such that we gotta
turn this around. Yeah, and lo and behold. Really for
that Saint Louis series, they win the first game, lose
(06:37):
the middle game, but then win and both the both
of the wins, there was an offensive difference, right. There
was production like we hadn't seen.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Yeah, and it kind of you know, it was kind
of when when Simeon started to get hot. Was it
was that series and you saw Kamar kind of getting
a mental breaks, kind of like even the Rangers are like,
all right, we gotta we gotta fix this. And so
he's been really really good since he's come back. Yeah,
(07:06):
he has been and and Simeon has remained productive. And
then you started to see Josh Smith get hot after
a mini slump. Evan Carter's contributed after you know, returning
to the Majors and and finding his footing. Jake Berger
has has done some stuff. There are a lot of
guys that have done stuff, and and again it hasn't
(07:27):
just been the long ball. Then they had that one
game where they hit six Okay, great, sure, but they
also did a lot of other stuff in that game
to get to the sixteen run mark this weekend. Not
not a huge offensive display, but you know, enough to
get the job done because the pitching was so good.
It's just it's just, you know, like like you know,
(07:48):
you said, you've heard complimentary football where the defense helps
the offense and all on special teams contributes. Well, kind
of look at it that way. You know, everybody is
doing their job and doing it, especially the offense, doing
it better than they have all season. So I would agree.
It's been two weeks running here. Yeah, and now the
Oils are coming to town, losers of six in a row.
(08:10):
They are bringing some pretty good starting pitching, so might
be some more low scoring games. But I think the
Rangers feel really good about themselves. I think this is
probably the best that they've played, and you know, they're
back to five hundred half game out in the wild
card race. I just think there's a lot of reasons
to feel good and to feel like things are heating
(08:31):
up to go. If missed as a summer sensation.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
There, yeah, no doubt about it. And the reality is
so that's sort of how the streak got going. And
other than the brain farts in Tampa, excuse me in Tampa,
you know, they've been winning series. They won the Saint
Louis series, got swept in Tampa. Again, easily could have
won that series, but didn't. They got swept, but then
they won. Now they've won three series in a row
(08:56):
since that series. One on the road that Washington No. Oh,
two on the road Washington and Minnesota, and then one
at home when they swept the Chicago White Sox. But
then you look ahead, right and you think, well, okay,
so they you know they've won, you know, four out
of five series. How many can they win? Well, they
play after this Kansas City series, which the way they've
(09:19):
been playing is very winnable, they go to Baltimore, they
go to Pittsburgh and then Baltimore, Jeff. So now you're
looking at three more right, So now you're saying, you know,
if they've won three out of four, now that's six
out of seven, right, then they come home after Baltimore
for Seattle, but then Baltimore comes right back right, so no,
(09:41):
and Seattle's fading. So now you're looking at the possibility
of you know, five, six, seven series in a row
that are so winnable, and again you still got to
get out there on the field and you still got
to do it. And now the Rangers are starting to
run into some of the difficulties the troubles that we
knew were going to happen, mostly injury, right Nathan Ivaldi
(10:04):
coming back from injury. We'll update that a little later.
Tyler Malley, you know, how long will he be down?
We'll update that a little bit later. But the reality is,
even without those two guys, because again Evaldi will be
back soon, I think there's enough here as long as
they keep doing those things offensively. And to your point,
(10:25):
it's not just I mean, I think that the mindset
becomes for a lot of these teams. You know, again,
one of the true outcome things, right, hit, a home runner, strikeout, Well,
that's that's not the mindset right now with this team.
That's not the mindset that Bret Boone preaches. That's not
the mindset that Bruce Bochi preaches, and so what we're
(10:47):
seeing is a team that is playing baseball. And I
think that's why we're seeing this streak.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
Yeah, and again, you know, winning, winning cures a lot.
It really does makes everybody feel better, and it makes
it just makes the crowds feel better. I mean, they
had some good attendance this weekend. Yeah, a couple of
sellouts in there. They stayed to the whole game, they
were in it, and it's it's just kind of a
(11:17):
good vibe right now. And again, winning cures everything. And
remember the Rangers were eight and two at one Pointe's right, Yeah,
and and nobody was complaining, you know, at the time,
were like they need to score more runs. When we
were like, oh, of course, are good. What are you
talking about. Well two months later, it looks like they're
scoring some runs. But I you know, Chris Young, I
(11:40):
think kind of sets the theme with what he says publicly.
You know, I believe in this team. We're in it.
The best way we can get better isn't necessarily a trade,
but you know, continuing to make our own internal improvements,
and there are internal improvements, you know, I wouldn't say
that Gari he is, you know, about on his way
(12:04):
to three hundred. You know, Josh Young is struggling and
got a day off yesterday. I thought Jake Berger getting
a hit last night or yesterday afternoon of the eighth
was a big deal because he'd had a stretch of
pretty lousy at bats. There, you know, so they're there.
It's not perfect, and no team has all nine hitters
going at the same time for an extended stretch. There's
(12:24):
always going to be a guy or two in there
who aren't getting the job done, at least as far
as getting hits. But again, you can hit a sacrifice fly,
you can move a runner over with a groundball to
to the second basement, just you know, productive outs. Be
a baseball player. If you get on the bases, you know,
be aggressive, try to steal a bag, or go first
(12:45):
the third, get a good read if there's a ball
in the dirt, like Seger did the other day. So
they're just there are ways for the even struggling players
to contribute, and and they are doing that. Josh Young's
defense has been good, yeah, Jake Berger's been good offensively too.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
So one problem yesterday that was actually called a kid.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
Yeah, I thought that it was. It was a tricky ball.
But anyway, you don't have to go four for four
every night to help your team win.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Nope. And let's get to the one topic that's popular
in the chat right now. We've got a schedule for
later in the show. We'll get to it now, and
that's Craig Kimbrel. And you know, people are calling for
him to be brought up immediately, and let's get rid
of Web and he'll bring kimber Look, he had a
good game, Jeff, and he's been good since he's been
a triple A with the Rangers. Yeah, but he's not
(13:32):
major league good, not yet. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
You know, he's had two scoreless innings, which is great. Hey,
he struck out the side last night in their game.
He's he only he sat ninety two and topped out
at ninety three. I don't I don't know if that's
much better than Jacob Webb right now, right, be honest,
And I would assume that, you know, Kimberle is relying
(13:55):
more on breaking stuff anyway, and maybe you know the
slider is is better than Webb's change up. But I
know when we when we asked Bruce Boch you about
it to start the weekend. He's like, we're gonna let
him go down there and pitch. So it didn't sound
like there was an urgency there.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
The one thing I would.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Bring up, and I guess there was some conversation Johnny
were telling me about it during the ninth inning on
the telecast, is that Chris Martin he didn't pitch yesterday.
Luke Jackson was the choice for the ninth and I
was I just I think we all thought Chris Martin,
it's going to be his day, you know, he didn't
pitch Saturday. And then I guess Bassett had talked about,
(14:36):
you know, a guy who'd pitched, you know, three out
of four would have been a lot to ask of him.
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Of Martin, so the.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
Day off, that's possible too, But it just kind of
struck me as as odd that that he didn't pitch.
So anyway, let's say Chris Martin is back on the
injury list, Well, then maybe you do Kimberle at that point.
Although Luis Curvello has been pitching really nicely too, and
he does not throw ninety three, he throws ninety five,
ninety seven, so we'll see, but I don't the latest
(15:05):
information I have is that Craig Kimberl is not packing
his bags for.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Not immin acting, not imminent. So we've got lots more
topics like this to discuss, including I know I also
saw the chat people suggested I forgot to ask Jeff
yesterday about Garson Garabido, but we know how we feel.
We're going to talk about that next. We're going to
talk about a Kamar Rocker, who I thought was one
(15:30):
of the heroes of the game yesterday, and so much
more about what's happening with your team right now. It's
Spirit Week on the DLLs Rangers podcast.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
You know, John, Spirit Week. We gotta show some spirit
for our favorite, our original og sponsor, Empire Today. You've
if you've seen our show or any of the deal shows,
you know that Empire Today is the number one source
for flooring and they want to give you the home
field advantage to make your house look look fantastic for
(16:00):
when you have guests over, or maybe give it a
refresh after your kids have destroyed the floors for a
number of years. Whatever it is. They're there for you,
and by they're at your house, you can do this
all without leaving the house. Schedule an in home estimate.
They'll bring out one of their stud specialists to help
you pick the colors and match your furniture and find
(16:23):
out what floorings best for you. And they can start
as soon as the next day, which is pretty remarkable
because it's a little bit of a project. So if
you need new floors, go to Empire day dot com
slash ds and you get three hundred and fifty dollars
off your new flooring.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
And if you need new employees, you know where to go.
Go to LinkedIn LinkedIn Jobs. It's a fantastic site for
you to post a job. LinkedIn's new feature can actually
help you write the job description, which is so critical,
it's so important, and then you quickly get your job
right in front of the people who will be most
(17:01):
app to bite right, and this is people with deep
candidate insights. Okay, you enter your job for free or
you pay a little bit, and then your job gets promoted,
and promoted jobs get three times the number of qualified applicants,
so that's worthwhile too. Based on LinkedIn data, seventy two
(17:25):
percent of small businesses using LinkedIn say that LinkedIn helps
them find the right high quality candidates. So we encourage
you to do the same thing. Post your job for
free at LinkedIn dot com slash rangers LinkedIn dot com
slash Rangers. All right, so let's get to Garson Garavedo
(17:47):
for I'm gonna say a month, maybe not that long.
Jeff's been saying, yeah, they're gonna need roster spots, and
Gerson Garabritos still unexplicably on the forty man. No more, Jeff,
He's headed to Korea.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
I've been saying it since he made his MLB debut
last year. Yeah, all right, this guy, nice story, nice finding.
Great job by the scouting department to find a guy
who gave him some innings last year and even a
little bit this year. But he's not been very good.
And uh, it's just, you know, I just thought that
I know he has options and young, you know, young
(18:24):
pictures with options are always attractive to other teams. But
I think I think they would be okay without I
think Gerson Gerributo would have made it through waivers as
it is. He asked for his release so he could
go pursue an opportunity in Korea. So, uh, I don't
know how to say anything in Korea, but uh, buenote. Uh,
mister Garibudo, I hope you have a successful and long
(18:46):
run in the KBO. And you know, I liked I
liked him. He was a good guy, you know, no, no,
no personal animosity here, but just the fact that he
continued to take a forty man spot. Uh uh boggle me,
you know, boggle my mind. They they got rid of,
(19:07):
they got rid of Owen White. Yeah, Garrison Garabudo. Jonathan
ornellis so Garrison Garabudo and that one, that one didn't
make a lot of sense to me.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
But even Dane Dunning, I mean, yeah, he keeps well,
actually he's not. He's been with the club, but he's
not back on the foot.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
But I mean they could have kept him on the
forty right, Yeah, all right, And so there's a spot
right now. Then there is an opening which you know,
the Kimber could take, you.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Know, so could Dane Dunning though at the moment.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
Could Dane Dunning who's been with the club? Uh? And
and and to miss his question about the starters for
the Royal Series Lighter is starting Tuesday, and then they
aren't sure which day Corbyn is going to start very
Wednesday or Thursday, which would indicate that they need another starter,
So that's where maybe Dunning comes in to play here.
(20:03):
But I think that you know, if you're I don't
think they want to do a bullpen game because you're
at the start of a nine game stretch here without
a day off. You know, that's that's pretty tough. So
I don't know how they'll go about it. But yeah,
you could add Dunning because there's a forty mans spot open,
and you know, just because it's open doesn't mean you
have to fill it. No, that's right, and the Rangers
(20:24):
are going to have to fill one eventually here in
the about three weeks for Cody Bradford. Josh Spores will
be right behind him, and then John Gray at the
end of the month, so end of July, not this month.
So there's three forty man spots that have to be
created as they come off to sixty. So we'll see,
(20:44):
we'll see what happens with that spot. But I mean,
I think if they would add Dane, they would probably
quickly remove Dane right And you know, the the their
security blanket there is that he is making two point
six six million dollars. He won't get claimed, so they
don't think he'll get claimed. Although now it's he's probably
(21:05):
down to about I mean, you're about halfway through the season,
so you know he's.
Speaker 4 (21:09):
He's went three.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
Yeah, it's probably about one five right now. So maybe
somebody would want to pick that up. I mean, it's
a if you know, you know, you need a starter
for a while, because he has been better to see
J Jay's point at Triple A. You know, he had
his second child and you know there's a little turbulence
that comes with that, but he seems to have found
his footing and so anyway, yeah, there's there is an
(21:33):
open spot. I just again, I don't think it's going
to go to kimberl right this second.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
All right, let's talk a little bit about Kamar Rocker
y yesterday's performance. We talked about him obviously a lot yesterday,
but one of the things I noticed and saw as
I was doing a look back was the pitch mix
Jeff and you know, we have said it and again
even Basic said on the show yesterday, because everybody wonders
(22:00):
is it a splitter or a cutter? Right? And what?
And he calls it a curveball, right, So it's like,
what is it? The reality is he needs to throw
more pitches. He's only had one game I think now
in the major league, at the major league level where
he had double digits in four separate pitches at least
(22:21):
pitches that stat past recognizes as four separate pitches, and
that was yesterday. He had four. He had double digits
in four separate pitch categories. And that, Jeff is the
is the key. And again, I know the White Sox
aren't necessarily like the greatest MLB team. There's a there's
a you know, you can definitely make a case they
might be more of a four A, uh even three
(22:43):
triple A. But the reality is that's how you keep
major league hitters off balanced. They can't be sitting on
a two pitch pitcher.
Speaker 5 (22:51):
Yeah, okay, so so for you know, four seemer, all right,
he does throw a sinker on occasion. Yeah, what he
calls a curveball. It has slighter characteristics. So now he's
throwing what is like a cutter, but he said is
a slider. So it's a little bit harder. I mean,
(23:16):
it's it's not a little harder, it's it's pretty significantly
harder than his than his curveball. So that's why people
are thinking it was a cutter, but he's gonna call
it a slider, you know, so I'm just just throwing
that one is great, you know so and that's part
of the maturing process.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
You know.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
You can see you don't see a lot of two
pitch pitchers starting pitchers. A lot of them have three
plus pitches, and then even more of them have four,
you know. And de Graham doesn't throw his curveball very
option but often, but it's a plus curveball, sure, you know,
of all these pitches are all plus and he throws
like five. So it's it's it's something that he has
(23:58):
to do and has to realize it has to be.
Hitter is a different look give you know, put put
an extra thought in their head, like, oh, he might
throw this here, He's done this in the past or
this last start. He did this, so it's it's good
to see, uh, you know. And and he he was
you know, we didn't say what the hell happened to
the Tampa Bay game, but he you know, there were
(24:19):
questions that suggested, what have you learned since Tampa Bay?
And and he said, yeah, you know, I gotta take
care of those did some of that in triple A
and so.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
Yeah, you know, and.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
There's there's a building block there. But again, I'm always
going to be a little cautious. Hey, he had five
scoreless innings against the against.
Speaker 6 (24:39):
The White Sox.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
Okay, yeah, let's see five scoreless innings against the you know,
or six Seattle. Yeah, Seattle, six scoreless or you know,
two runs and six against Seattle.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
Yeah, because Pittsburgh right now, isn't isn't much more of
a test, right than Chicago? A little more? Uh, Baltimore
is a little bit more of a test than Chicago.
But anyway, yeah, let's see it against Seattle or someone
of that ilk. He did have low pitch totals, which
is so good to fourteen nineteen, fifteen, fourteen and twenty
(25:13):
in his last inning. But again in his last inning,
what did you say, he had a couple of those
pickle bottles even before he went out there, and then
three more out there. He's got more pickle in him
than the blood at that point.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
It was interesting because he talked about how even at
the dinner of the night before and all day Saturday,
he was just chugging fluids and you could tell how
much he was sweating out there. But it's like, gosh,
you know, I kind of jokingly said, you might need
to get an IV before your next start, and he's
(25:46):
like that that might be the next step. Wow, okay,
you know, just get some fluids in you like a
football player does. And hey, if it works, it works,
you know, keeping him on the mound, if he's gonna be,
if he's gonna if he is gonna pitch like he
did against the White Sox, the Rangers want to see
that for more than five innings, so you know. But
he also he had only gone four in that one
(26:08):
triple a start, so but Bochie suggested that he probably
would have kept going considering the state of the bullpen.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Yeah, yeah, which makes sense. And he absolutely felt like
other than the fact that he was, you know, needing
pickle juice and cramping up, you know, he had enough
right other than that thing. So but they couldn't they
couldn't risk it. A dooleys Garcia came through. Jeff mentioned
that he's not going to hit three hundred for the season,
and that's true. I mean, he started too slowly and
(26:37):
played that way for too long. However, he is hitting
over three hundred since his five days sitting down, right,
I think he might be at like three eighteen since
those five days the Rangers gave him off to figure
it out and to collect himself, So that certainly worked.
That was a method that Bruce Bochi has employed very
(26:59):
sparingly in his career. But it worked for a Dooleys
Garcia and it's been great to see he's added, you know,
slug two that wasn't there obviously prior to the sit down.
But anyway, the point is A Dooleys came through with
that clutch. I think it actually was a single that Yeah,
(27:20):
it goes down as a single at the game winner
in the eleven inning game on Saturday. But our buddy,
the Profit was actually at that game. He works on
the side for MLB, and I'm afraid either MLB or
Adoles Garcia are going to hire the Profit away from us, Jeff,
because Adoles had the walk off.
Speaker 5 (27:41):
That's right, had the walkoff. Homer, Yeah, he had to
walk off.
Speaker 4 (27:44):
But I love these pictures at the Profit and look
at why at Langford and then this is just the classic.
I mean, there's no better feeling for any of these
guys than to get spilled and look at it. He
can barely Breathe ran the basis, got doused. I love
that great job by the profit on the still shot
reminders of that night. And again, it wasn't a very great, memorable,
(28:06):
wonderful game, but the outcome was just fine.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
It would have really been memorable if they'd lost it,
but they ended up winning it despite the dreadful numbers
of runners in scoring position and just all the all
the opportunities that they were given by the White Sox,
and they finally did take advantage of them.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
So that was good.
Speaker 5 (28:30):
But Adulus in his last seven is batting three twenty one,
three twenty one. It was last seven games with five homer,
I'm sorry, one homer, seven RBIs three walks. A lot
of those nine hits in twenty eight bats. Maybe not
a lot, but in my mind, I think three have
been to right field, which is a good indication, and
(28:53):
they've been doubles, so he's, you know, using all fields.
I thought he had a good would walk last night
or yesterday afternoon. They tried to pitch him away with
a slider and he actually laid off a high fastballs
and a slider that was off the plate while ahead
in the count. Usually he just is you know, you'd
(29:15):
get a Doulas Garcia up three or three one in
the count or even two ozho and he is taking
a hack wherever that pitches. So I thought that was
that was as impressive as one of his opposite field hits.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
It absolutely was. It's great to see him, you know,
becoming that selective guy again. It's not like he's never
been that, but it is that's his you know, that's
sort of his anthrax, and that was what was absolutely
troubling him before they finally had to sit him down.
He was swinging at that you know, pitch just outside
(29:47):
the owe almost every time they knew that's where they
could throw it, and he'd chase it, and he chased
so many of them. But the chase rate way down.
The Dole's way better right now than he had been previously.
I want to talk about a couple of more streaks.
The Rangers have an extra base hitting streak. They have
some walk streaks that are very interesting, and Marcus Simeon's
(30:09):
streaking as well. That's coming up, and there's lots more
to talk about. We kind of do a Ranger's clean
up segment. That's good next on the DLLs Rangers podcast.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
You know, Frosty's still with us. Our good friends at
Wendy's are back for another week of helping out our
shows with their new Frosty fusions, and they're good. And
this one, this one's kind of almost shaky because it's
been it's been out, it's been feeling the summer heat.
It's been feeling in the summer heat. That miss has
been talking about mine's leaking, but it's so good.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
Mine is.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
That is the Oreo one, because I'm a big Oreo guy.
But the Wendy's Frosty Shop, it's their new take on
the old favorite, the Frosty. You can still get the
old favorite, but you can get these new kick ass
flavors like Brownie Batter and the Caramel Crunch, the pop
Tart Strawberry, the Oreo Brownie brownie Batter. They're really really good.
(31:06):
I mean, and god knows, John and I have tried
them all. Anyway, whatever flavor you're craving, odds are we've
got a Frosty for it. So clock in for a
sweet treet anytime, including midnight or later at participating us.
Wendy's hours may vary by location.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
All right, so game time and Nicole got the email
out to me today. I appreciate her getting it here
just in time. You know who's coming to town, of course,
the Rangers and Royals are always there on game time.
Pick your seat from the map of Globe Life Field.
They're fantastic and they're wonderful and they have lower fees
than everybody else. But here's some of the acts that
(31:43):
are coming to town. Oh Luke Bryan, Oh Luke Bryan's
coming to dose Eki's this Friday. I don't know Tray's work,
but Trey Songs, that's with a Z of course. Oh yeah,
Trey Songs. Trey's coming to the Toyota Music Factory. That
also is this weekend, Saturday. And this one these guys
(32:03):
I do know coming to the Bass Hall this Friday.
The Ojays, Jeff, the Ojys. Yeah, who knew they were
still touring, But the Ojays are coming. And then the
one I wanted to show you was, yeah, no, here
it is peach Pit. Peach Pit comes tomorrow. Peach Pit
(32:25):
at the south Side Ballroom tomorrow. A couple of young
looking fellas. So anyway, peach Pit, go see him. Anyway.
We love game time. We hope you will too. Now,
let's go to a couple of these streaks that I
was talking about and the walk streak. There are two
of them, Jeff. One of the walk streaks is pretty
(32:48):
significant in that it involves one Corey Seeger, who has
walked in ten straight games and it is the longest
streak by a ranger of walks in consecutive games since
Rusty Greer did tell in nineteen ninety nine. Wow, can
(33:09):
you imagine? And beyond that, Corey Seger doesn't walk. I mean,
he's just he is the epitome of that aggressive hitter
at the plate. He swings at the first pitch, you know,
almost every time, and you can't quarrel with it because
he does so well typically with that first pitch. But
right now his timing's off a little bit. He's still
(33:30):
working on getting back. Just love that he's added this
element to his game seemingly easily.
Speaker 5 (33:37):
Yeah, and you know, I do have a few thoughts
on that.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
It's good.
Speaker 5 (33:42):
I think overall, it's good, I really think, and it's
why it's important that these other guys have finally gotten going.
I really think that teams think that the only guy
that can beat him. Is Corey Seeger right? You know
the guy that the guy that if he comes up
you know, open bass, he's not gonna get pitched too,
(34:05):
or he's gonna get pitched around. And good for Corey.
Good on Corey for taking those pitches. You know, the
Rangers do not have a lot of guys who walk,
and that's a you know, they're not going up there
looking to walk. I don't think a lot of hitters
do that. But you know, with Evan Carter and Corey
Seeger just finding ways to get on base. You know,
(34:27):
Marcus Simeon was it was, was the team leader and walks.
I don't know if he remains so, but you know,
get on base any way you can, especially when your
team is struggling. And you know, Corey's been scoring runs too.
You know, I don't think it's a coincidence that he's
walking a lot and scoring a lot more runs. So
this is this is a good thing, and you know
(34:48):
he's gonna get his You know, you saw some of
the balls he hit in the series that turned into outs,
but were you know, just cannon shots.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
He had won the double, I.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Believe fridayears Saturday, that was just a laser to right field,
so the guy still got it. But this walking is
a very nice surprise.
Speaker 4 (35:09):
And wasn't it wasn't it yesterday? Was it yesterday that
he scored on that ball in the dirt? Or was
that Saturday? That was Saturday Saturday, which yeah, yeah, fantastic.
You got to get on base to get moved over
to third base to be in position to do that,
and the walk definitely helps. In the last four games,
the Rangers of it as a team, have walked twenty
(35:30):
six times in four games. That two is a streak. Now,
the streak doesn't go back nearly as long, but they
never had twenty six walks in four games all of
last year or the first half of this year. And
in fact, you got to go back to September of
twenty three to find the last time the Rangers had
this many. They had twenty seven during that stretch, so
(35:51):
not significantly more, but at the end of twenty three
and you know, they had a similar, you know, trend
where they were walking a lot. But again it shows
the chase is becoming a thing of the past, and
the chase is the thing that was absolutely haunting and
bedeviling this club. Offensively prior to this this recent STRATEGYEF.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
Yeah, you know, and we've talked about Adulas's struggles, but
he wasn't the only one. And then furthermore, you know,
there's there was a stat out there where they they're
like one of the worst teams at chasing in a
three to two count, right, you know, a weird thing,
but something that they're trying to work on. And you know,
(36:37):
I think Josh Young is kind of the poster boy
for that one and talked about a guy was struggling.
So you know, they're just ways. And I've had a
conversation with Breboon. You have to and he you know,
he the one he told last time I talked to him,
he told me, you're not going to take a fifty
walk guy a year and make him a hundred walk guy. Right,
But if you make him a sixty walk guy, you know,
(37:00):
that's ten fewer outs and ten ex or base runners,
you know.
Speaker 6 (37:04):
And if you have a guy who strikes.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
Out one hundred and thirty times a year and you
get that trim to one hundred and twenty, well that's
ten more balls put into play. Or maybe that's maybe
that's a couple walks and a couple of hits. You know,
there are just little ways to do it. You're not
gonna change who a hitter is, especially not in season
and likely not ever. But if you can just make
(37:28):
little incremental changes, it's going to have a big effect
over the course of a season.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Yeah, it definitely is. And the reality is it was
Boach that was talking about that. I heard him on
one of the pregame shows talking to Eric Eric Nadell,
that is, and and he was saying, you know, I
three to two our chase rate, and this was I
think this was the last game of the road trip,
so this was the last game in Minnesota, and we
(37:54):
were watching it closely. And A Doles in particular in
that game had to two instances where he was at
three to two and didn't chase. I think one of
them for sure, he walked, and I think the other
one he put the bat on the ball, put it
in play at least, but didn't chase. And so in
any event, it's something they're cognizant of, and it's something
(38:15):
that they're working on and and those those kinds of things, right,
that's where the analytics and all that really do help, Right,
they come into plow Dame. I didn't know about this.
I mean, boats was like somewhat surprised, Like, man, we're
last in chase rate on three two pitchs. Well, we
got to stop that. And then you focus on it,
and you concentrate on it.
Speaker 5 (38:34):
Yeah, and those are things you can fix. You can
put it in their heads. Yeah, yeah, you know, this
is what this is what we're doing. This is what
you're doing. And the other team knows it.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (38:46):
The other team's not gonna probably isn't, may not. And
I let's say certain batters, you may not see a
striking for you two because they know you are going
to chase station. Sure, absolutely, there you go. That's that's
just a little movement part of this uptick. All these
things are or or or. It's still a place where
(39:06):
they feel like they can grow and get better, which
in turn will continue the upward trend. So it's not
like they're not working. It's not like they aren't finding
things that are wrong. And you know, some of them
are glaring, like Josh Jung has been in a slump
for I don't know the last fifteen to twenty games.
Jonah him is slumping right now why at Langford looks
(39:29):
like he's coming out of it, but still probably not
to the level that the Rangers would like him to.
Speaker 6 (39:33):
And Jake Berger, like.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
I mentioned, you know, he had that nice hit yesterday
that I think really helped. But you know, they've struggled
with guys with runners in scoring position, Simeon excuse me,
kind of being the exception. So there are areas where
they can always improve. And again, and you know, I
know the maybe people are getting tired of hearing it,
but the old the adage these guys will be what
(40:00):
they are in the back of their baseball cards at
the end of the year, and Bruce Bochi believes that.
And it's a long year. The Rangers have played seventy
two games, so you know what, they've got ninety to go,
more than half of the season remaining to get this
thing turned around completely. And again there they've won four
in a row, what seven, seven of eight or is
(40:22):
it eight of nine? I think it's eight. It is
going the right way. And hey, they're not playing the
best teams out there right now, that's not their fault.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
Nope, take advantage of it.
Speaker 5 (40:35):
They advantage of it and get healthy, get healthy. Against
these teams, you know, and hey, that's what they're doing.
And then again, it's a long season, and that's why
some people weren't panicking at all. There was some panic
on the offense, but like Elvis Andrews, we'd see him
off camera and last time I talked to him, he's like, Oh,
(40:56):
we've been through this before. This is no big deal.
And these players get it. They don't like it, they
don't like to be stinking, but they understand that, you know,
this is a long season. Things will get turned around.
So I'm not saying that this is the turnaround. But
you know, you remember the twenty three season, they started
out forty and twenty, finished below five hundred the rest
(41:16):
of the way.
Speaker 6 (41:17):
Yeah, well in the World Series.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
So that means they were under five hundred for one
hundred two games. Yeah yeah, yeah, under five hundred over
the course of one hundred two games, and they won
the World Series. So, speaking of streaks, Marcus Simeon is
on an eight game hitting streak. And the reality is,
Jeff We've talked about this, the fact that he's playing,
(41:39):
you know, like the All Star player that he is
and has been especially hitting that way because he pretty
much always did it in the field, but when he's
hitting like this, it seems like the old hitting is contagious.
The other guys follow. And right now that's happening even
despite the fact that Corey is not hitting like that yet.
(42:00):
So I think that there's even more what contagiousness, you know,
that can that can be bred here. We can, you know,
get that little beaker goal, put.
Speaker 5 (42:09):
All those infections in there and call the call the
people in Wuhan see what they can come up with,
right exactly.
Speaker 4 (42:15):
So anyway, Marcus Simeon's streaking doing really well during that
time as well. So lots of positive things on the
Rangers offensive front. I like this one we've we've told
talked before about the fact that the the opening or
the debut game for a player, uh, they take a
(42:36):
pat they put a patch on his jersey. Then they
take that patch and they turn it into a baseball card.
And of course every player would love to just happen
upon their baseball card with the patch on it. You know,
we heard about the offer to when they found schemes,
the kid and the kid in La found schemes and
(42:57):
you know the pirates were offering you know, see and
tickets for life and all that. But the kids from
LA and and anyway, h Wyatt Langford's patch was found,
and whoever found it cashed in Jeff one hundred and
eighty three thousand dollars was the winning bid for the
Wyatt Langford Rookie Debut patch card. So I guess the
(43:22):
only question is is why at one hundred and eighty
three thousand dollars later in his wallet? Probably not? Probably not.
Speaker 5 (43:30):
That doesn't seem like an expenditure.
Speaker 4 (43:31):
Why it would, No, it doesn't.
Speaker 5 (43:33):
Maybe maybe if it came with some hunting gear or something,
he might do it. But those cards are cool, you know.
And and again the Schemes chase was a big, big deal,
And I mean, I don't remember what that kid sold
for like three million or so.
Speaker 4 (43:47):
I think he did, yeah, and I think he did one.
Speaker 5 (43:49):
Of the auction houses or something to that effect. But
it was through auction, so he probably had to pay it,
you know, a commission to the hounce. But whatever, that
kid's going to go to college now thanks to Paul Skins.
Speaker 4 (44:01):
And drops and along those lines, I actually thought a
buck eighty three was a little low for a while
at Langford Car it's hard to see. I mean, I'm
not a card collector at all, and I wouldn't ever
pay that kind of money for any sort of collectible.
I feel like I have enough of those. But anyway,
I don't know, just in that world that seems low
(44:23):
to me.
Speaker 5 (44:24):
Well, it's the only one, right, No one else is
ever gonna there's not gonna be another one, so that
adds to its value. It was great at a gem
mint ten, which means it's it's perfect. It's autographed by Wyatt,
and you know, he is a potential budding superstar.
Speaker 4 (44:46):
That's the whole thing.
Speaker 5 (44:47):
It's probably not going on somebody's shelf. It's probably going
into a vault and they're waiting for it to mature right,
for him to become an All Star, a multiple time
All Star, and then they can sell it. So uh,
I would love to hit a card like that, a
one of one of a superstar.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
You know.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
Shoot, i'd do cartwheels, But yeah, I would sell the
Son of a Bitch as soon as I got my
hands on.
Speaker 4 (45:11):
I'm not sure. I mean again, if it was Wyatt
Langford's I'm not sure I would either. I don't know
how long I'm gonna live. But I think i'd put
that thing myself. I'd put it in the vault and
wait until he if he has the career we think
he's gonna have, it's gonna be worth a lot more
than one hundred and eighty three thousand dollars. And to
your point, whoever bought it is probably thinking exactly that shit.
(45:31):
One hundred and eighty three thousands are dropping the bucket
compared to what I'm gonna get down the road. So anyway,
that's a little Rangers clean up segment. Next up, it's
our batting cleanup segment, and man, there's a lot to
get to, including a huge, huge trade in Major League
Baseball that's coming up next. On the DLLs Rangers.
Speaker 1 (45:50):

There's eight of them to choose from, well really seven.
One of them is kind of a DLS shirt that
(48:05):
has the letter S in the Ranger script, you know,
the DLS. Yeah, yeah, each Anyway, these are sweet, man,
and I own fifteen shirts from All City, from sort out,
All citynetwork dot com. Even my son has one, so
go ahead go there. Sweatshirts, pretty good hats are coming,
(48:28):
not in time for this sale, of course, but man,
they're just they're just good.
Speaker 6 (48:33):
In it. It shows that.
Speaker 5 (48:34):
You're a a smart fan because obviously you've been educated
by us, and then you know, it's a very unique
way you can't get these anywhere else.
Speaker 6 (48:44):
To show your spirit for your favorite team.
Speaker 4 (48:46):
And you make a good point about let when you
brought up one of your favorites be in the Texas Chew. Yeah,
that's one of my favorites too, And I'm like when
you said that, I'm like, when the hell's mine? My
son stole it. I forgot about that. I'm going over
there this weekend. I got a rummage through his damn closet.
See if I can steal it back. But or I'll
just buy a new one. I do like the Texas
(49:08):
Chew one. And I almost wore the Hello wind Column
one today too, because that really is one of my
We helped kind of inspire that. Sure, so that's one
of my favorites as well. But let's get to this
huge trade as we back clean up today. Raphael devers Man,
he just went scorched earth on the Red Sox. Jeff
(49:31):
and I was talking to John Anderson, who's our Cowboys producer,
but he's from Boston. Used to produce a radio show
in Boston. I was like, what's sports talk radio like
in Boston today? He said, I'm just glad I'm not
working there. I mean, they have got to be so
angry at the Red Sox, so angry at Devers. And look,
(49:54):
there's plenty of blame to go around here. Red Sox
bring in of course, you know, as you all know,
they bring in Alex in the offseason, asked Evers to
move off third base. He is that I'm not moving
off third base. They finally say, yes, you are moving
off third base. Suddenly they have injuries and instead of
being the DH they need him to play a position
first base. Yeah, I'm not going to do that for you. Yeah. Wow,
(50:15):
it's a guy that's got a three hundred and ten
million dollar contract from them. Yeah. It.
Speaker 5 (50:22):
I don't know if you want that guy on your team.
Obviously the Red Sox didn't.
Speaker 4 (50:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (50:26):
I mean, and you know, everybody remembers the season opening
series here.
Speaker 6 (50:30):
Uh he was. He was dreadful.
Speaker 4 (50:32):
He was so oh my gosh, he couldn't he couldn't
like he as far as Chase goes, he made, you know,
and the worst day that the Duleys has ever had
look fantastic. He really did. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (50:46):
And so you know, the trade that saves him a
bunch of money because they're not sending any money to
San Francisco, which is a little shocking. So they they
now have this surplus money so they can go out
and make some uh, make some moves at the trade deadline. Uh,
you know, and they they're they just they just swept
(51:07):
the Yankees, so maybe they're feeling a little momentary. They
got backed over for you don't whip a portrayed in
the hours after you beat uh, you know, complete a
sweep of the Yankees. But you know, and the Giants
are are really bad on offense. They have a very
good third baseman and Matt Chapman. They could use some
help at first base and and but anyway, they could
(51:28):
just drop this this this guy in a d H
and be fine.
Speaker 6 (51:31):
But I'm gonna I don't know.
Speaker 5 (51:33):
I haven't read a lot about what the Giants plans are,
whether he's going to play first base for them. Chapman
is hurt right now, though I don't know how bad
of an injury it is.
Speaker 6 (51:44):
It's hand.
Speaker 4 (51:46):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (51:46):
But Devs is terrible at third I mean that's what
that's part of the reason why they got they got
Alex Bregman because their defense at third base was so terrible.
Speaker 4 (51:58):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (51:58):
And it was Devers so a lot of ways that
that the Red Sox are improving while taking out a
guy who is a hell of a hitter.
Speaker 4 (52:10):
So yeah, I mean, he's a three time All Star
and he's you know young, he's twenty I think he's
twenty eight years old, and he is and he has said,
he has said to the Giants, I will play anywhere
you asked me to play DH or first base, right,
which is basically just you know, f you once again
(52:30):
to the Red Sox who were asking him to do
the same thing. And you know, I mean, I guess
it's like, yeah, you can, you can act like that
kind of a jerk if you can get away with it. Yeah,
and he did well, he did.
Speaker 5 (52:45):
They probably gave him a gave him an inch and
he took a foot, you know. Yeah, if they had
said from the outset, you know, because there was some
talk about well Alex Regman was like, hey, I'll play second.
That's fine, he can keep playing third. They waited until
spring training really to do it, you know, and he's
not the first guy to get pissed off about a
position change. Akale Young got pissed off twice. Yeah, so
(53:07):
you know it's but they did in the off season.
You know, they didn't just kind of show up to
spring training and tell them what they were going to do.
They gave him time to put his mind around it. Now,
you know, we we don't know what happened behind the scenes,
but I do think that it's a little bit of
a surprise that Joey Korra or Alex Cora, sorry not Joey,
Joey's Alex brother, that Alex couldn't convince Devers.
Speaker 6 (53:32):
To be a happy camper.
Speaker 5 (53:33):
You know, Cora's regarded as a player's manager, speaks the language,
you know, not from the same locale. But that really
seemed like a maybe maybe that was it, Maybe like
oh well, Coral'll take care of this, and if he
couldn't do it, then maybe they're like, all right, if
you can't do it, then we they got but getting
(53:55):
rid of them.
Speaker 4 (53:55):
And of course it's easy to you know, look at
it and just sort of put the blame on Devers
who just decided I'm not going to be a team
player here and then goes to San Francisco and says
I'll be a team player, right, I mean, so it's
easy to put the blame on him. But where Red
Sox fans have to just be beside themselves. Is that
in the last is it three years or two three?
(54:17):
I think they've traded away Mookie Bets and and Rafael Devers.
One of the reasons they signed Devers to the big
deal was because they had screwed up so bad. And
I know it was different management teams, but they had
screwed up so badly letting, you know, trading Mookie Bets
away and then they're like, we better sign Devers and
they do. Now they trade him away.
Speaker 5 (54:37):
Yeah, well, you know in this and this will come
back to the to the Rangers, Chris Young doesn't sign
guys that have a reputation as being bad teammates.
Speaker 4 (54:46):
Sure the Ranger.
Speaker 6 (54:47):
The Rangers probably would have done the same thing.
Speaker 4 (54:50):
You know.
Speaker 5 (54:51):
I think the Red Sox and the Giants play this weekend.
Oh dude, they really it'll be interesting. Oh that's good,
but it was. It was a stunners. Right after our
show ended, he was walking to the parking don I
was getting all these notifications. Yeah, that's that. That was
a big one. A lot of people by surprise.
Speaker 4 (55:09):
It really did. And so yeah, it'll be interesting to
see how Devers does there but you fee, especially this
weekend if they're playing the Red Sox, you feel like
he's going to be one highly motivated individual. So no
doubt that's. Uh, that's going to be interesting to see. Uh. Meantime, tonight,
Shohei Otani makes his pitching debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jeff,
(55:33):
this is one of the reasons they paid him all
the money that they paid him. And here it is,
he's finally making his debut as a pitcher.
Speaker 5 (55:43):
Right and and it's only going to be an inning
maybe two. I know I saw BC and they're flexing
his muscles, and you know, this is a really interesting.
Speaker 6 (55:53):
Rehab.
Speaker 5 (55:54):
Of course, he's a one of a kind player. Obviously,
you don't want to lose his bat, and you can't
don't really plan a guy's throwing schedule around the team's
off days because they may go ten or twelve games
without an off day. So and I haven't looked at
the Dodgers schedule, but I know they played yesterday and
they're playing tonight, so you know, maybe they are in
(56:15):
a in a spot where they don't have a lot
of off days and they don't want to take the
bat out of the lineup, So they're like, all right,
what we've seen in live batting practice looks pretty good.
Just just going in there and pitching in and you know,
he is going to start the game. He's gonna be
the opener. He's not coming in in the eighth, So
they're giving him their proper routine and time to warm
(56:36):
up and act like it's a normal start. I do
wonder though, if if they if they have rehab assignments
planned for him, rehab starts on future off days, because
I don't know, if you want to, you know, monkey
around with this guy and this investment, it seems a
(56:59):
little risky to just keep doing that every five days
until he builds up to to where you can start.
But then again, if it's spectacular, and I don't know,
it's hard to think that show, hey Tony wouldn't be right,
you know, but you know, like like you know, you
for instance, they could have sent him to Arizona, let's say,
for a you know, kind of a simulated game type
(57:19):
of thing where they can roll the inning. You know,
if he's at twenty five pitches, let's say, all right,
that's it. Everybody off the field can't do that tonight. No,
if he's at twenty five pitches and has only two
outs in the first and you don't want to go
any further with him, you got to go to the bullpen.
So you know, you're using up a reliever here because
you're not going to bring in your your bolt guy
(57:41):
just to get one out right, you know, and in
the middle of a dirty inning. So yeah, it's pretty interesting.
But but but it's it's good to see this step
and to see him back close to being a major
league starting pitcher, get.
Speaker 4 (57:55):
No doubt about him. And it's fun. It's great to
see Apps in the show. And she's joined us multiple
times lately, and we're glad to have Abs back as
part of the team. But she tells us six hundred
and sixty three days since his last major league you
know start. I mean, that's a long time. To your point,
hard to get stretched out if you're only going and
(58:17):
ending at a time, where does the stretching out come in?
But it is Shoho Tani, so quickly we tell you
that gian Carlos Stanton is also making a return to
the Yankees tonight. He's been on the injured list, and
he is not the only home run hitter who is
making news on this Monday. There is a home run hitter.
(58:40):
This is big, This is huge. There's a home run
hitter that made noise this morning. Take a look and listen.
Speaker 5 (59:07):
Henry Wilson, ladies, and look at the mob, Jeff, and
look at the speed around the bases. Yeah, he didn't
get that from us, No, not for me, maybe my wife,
But you know, it was a it was a good deal.
He'd been he'd been struggling a little bit here lately,
went down and hit a ball. The crowd gasped at
(59:27):
how far it had gone. And this tournament had started
on some shorter fenced fields and this would have this
would have easily cleared those fences. As it was, It
hit the fence out of the three hundred foot marker
and Henry, Henry motored around. Is a game changing play
there down three to two, and they ended up winning
nine to five.
Speaker 4 (59:45):
And that would look three run bomber was a three
run homer. Yeah, okay, that's good, and yeah, that's fantastic.
And Henry was mad. He's like, man, if it had
been on the other fields, how to hit it out?
But but it's still a home run And and good
for Henry. So uh. Anyway, that's another home run here
make note of on this Monday. So Spirit Week continues
