Speaker 3 (00:58):
When you start the season and for three weeks and
don't hit a lick, have one of the worst offenses
in baseball, even though the team's been winning, you know,
you can't live like that, And the Rangers knew it.
After three weeks it was time something had to be
done about this offense. So the Rangers went to that
(01:19):
place where well, actually, the team that plays in West
Sacramento will soon play in Las Vegas. So Bruce Bochi
shuffled the deck. Oy he shuffled the deck and came
up with four races. I guess in the first game.
It all worked out just.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Well, the four aces being four home runs and a
season high eight runs. You know, they're the last team
in baseball to that hadn't scored seven runs in a game,
let alone six, So you know, it's it was a jolt,
a wake up call to guys. I don't know what
(01:59):
what you want to call it, but it worked and
you're gonna see it again, and and I think that, uh,
it will take some time before, if you want to say,
order is restored until Marcus Simon is back in the
leadoff spot now if Josh Smith needs a day off,
then I would imagine that that Marcus would be the guy.
(02:20):
But he did pretty well in that five hole. You know,
a couple of hits, a lot of RBI is a
home run in there. I think that it's you got
to ride this one out, you got to let it go.
The problem, of course, is the Corey Seeger hamstring situation,
so that kind of juggles things, mixes things up and
leave you searching for to fill a pretty big hole
(02:44):
in the lineup. And and they'll they'll figure out a
way to do it. You know. The The point that
Jared Sandler made last night after the after the game
of the postgame show is, you know, in baseball, you know,
when you lose your best player, you're gonna have somebody
to fill in who's capable. It's not like losing an
NFL team losing a starting quarterback, right, you know, It's
(03:05):
it's not quite that bad. It's not great, especially with
as good as Corey was hitting. Uh he was batting
three seventy in his previous twelve games, was hitting for power,
had an OPS above a thousand. It's the Corey Seeger
you expect to see and now that he's infirmed, you're
(03:26):
not just going to replace that. There's not a free
agent out there, somebody in the minor leagues. You're just
going to be like, hey, come on up and this
all you have to do is Corey Seeger spot just
be the best hitter or the best hitters in baseball.
So it's not going to happen. But and and maybe
that will will We'll galvanize the lineup. Maybe maybe that
will spark something or or you know, they always say
(03:49):
you don't need to do any more than you then
you you're capable of doing. But sometimes it just happens.
So it'll it'll be interesting to see how everything gets
mixed and match. But to your point, after three weeks,
the status quo was not working and the Rangers needed
to score runs. They've been getting phenomenal pitching, the best
(04:09):
pitching in the league in baseball, you can argue, and
you can't waste that. You know, there's an opportunity here
for the Rangers to take off. This offensive gets going
to the pitching holds hold serve. The Rangers could open
up a pretty big darn lead here in the West,
but they couldn't let it. They couldn't wait anymore. They
needed to do something to spark something no.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Bruce Bochi had said before the game, just after he
posted the lineup the first day that was so drastically
different without Simon in the leadoffs, body said, you know,
if we keep doing what we've been doing, we'll keep
getting the results that we've been getting. And it's that's
sort of the old you know, the definition of insanity
(04:51):
is doing the same thing over and over again and
expecting different results. Right, So there was no more expectation
of different results. There was a change made, and the
change works, and we'll see for how long, and we'll
see how long it lasts. You know, Marcus Simeon isn't
necessarily a prototypical leadoff hitter, nor was he ever really
(05:14):
won before here, so that he doesn't necessarily have to
go back into that spot. If the offense is working,
then Bruce Bochie will allow it to work. I mean
we've always said what he does is he stays with
what's hot or who's hot, right, if there's a Josh Smith,
you know earlier I'm mostly on the last home stand.
(05:36):
But when Dustin Harris was in the lineup and he
was hitting getting hits every day, you don't take him out.
You find a way to play it right. And that's
what boats will do. That's what old school managers will
do too. It's like, I ain't it ain't broke, I
ain't gonna fix it, you know.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Yeah, and he, you know, he, you know, he always
says funny things like, you know, a guy hits two
home runs, next day'll be like, oh, you know, he
had two home runs, so he's automatically back in the lineup. Yeah,
you hit a grand slame, you play the next day.
Things like that. But there's a lot of truth to
it too. And you saw Dustin Harris basically replace Leodi
Taveras on Sunday because he had been hitting the ball
(06:11):
so well. And you know, leodis the better defensive player,
so I think that you could see a scenario for
Leodi where he plays as a defensive substitution, you know,
and some guys, you know, you still need days off.
And he's he's he's not a bad player, he's just
(06:33):
not he's a frustrating player because he's never realized his potential.
There's been spurts of it, and you know, like May
of twenty three and really, twenty three is just such
a great season for him. Him at the bottom of
the order, made the made the lineup work, and and
he had done that at times early this season, it
just wasn't happening enough. And when you get a guy, hey,
when you're not scoring runs and you get a guy
(06:55):
who's helping you score runs, and you have other guys
who are going to be in the lineup because of
how much money they make, and you got to get
him going, well, you may lose your spot. And that's
what's happened to to Leodi because Marcus Siemens is going
to play every day, Jock Peterson is going to play
against against right handed pitchers. They got to get him going,
and they don't. You don't get going by sitting your
butt on the bench.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Nope.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
So Jake Burger is going to keep playing. So it
was great to see him at a home run Tuesday
Tuesday night. These guys are going to play. So it's
it's not like there's a ton the Rangers can do
personnel wise other than maybe Leodi and now if if Corey,
you're going to see some guys get some other chances.
But it's moving the it's manipulating the lineup and and
(07:37):
and maybe taking some pressure off guys. Maybe maybe Marcus
Simeon felt great hit in fifth and not having to
worry about about the fact that he wasn't getting on base.
I mean, you saw the comments John had mentioned him
where he's like, I I don't have any saying this
matter because I have terrible numbers. And uh, he's right,
So now he can change that. And maybe maybe him
(07:59):
batt in fifth is going to be the sparky needs sure.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
And the other thing that Marcus said, and I found
this telling and interesting, is that you know there were
a few games during this stretch when when he was
not hitting the ball, well, there were a few games
where I went, man, that game was so close to
being so different, right, right, a ball that didn't fall.
His batting average on balls in play was like one
(08:23):
fifty six. Well, in some ways, that's just bad luck,
right the player hit the fielder is where you've hit it.
And I wonder after he said that and admitted, you know,
there were games I came in and I went, man,
that could have been so different. That's got to be
what Peterson is feeling some when we see him lately
(08:45):
at least start to square a few balls up and
things like that.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Yeah, there are people who believe in expected batting average
and don't believe in the expected batting average, and luck
comes into play. That's where you hear everybody talking about, well,
you know, he's so unlucky, look at his expected batting average. Well,
you know, you make your own luck a lot of times. Sure,
but you know, if the Rangers are fundamentally doing the
(09:09):
right things, like hitting the ball hard, you know that
that means that that good things are happening at the plate.
And it looked like even even in the the Dodgers
series and against the Angels, the Rangers were hitting more
balls hard. I thought there are a lot of you know,
outs of balls hit more than one hundred miles per hour,
(09:32):
and so that that's an indication that they're doing the
right things. Now, if Peterson he hasn't done that, He didn't.
He did line out Tuesday night, So you know, maybe
that's a maybe that's a good sign. Bruce Bochy said,
it's a it's more of a timing issue with him.
Uh so maybe maybe that was the pitch. I don't know.
(09:53):
They didn't let him back the next time. Because the
left hander was pitching. So we'll see what happens with him.
But you are going to see Jock Peterson. He's not
going to get benched.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
No, he absolutely won't. And the record for the Rangers
slump futility, I suppose was a guy we remember, Chris
Davis who had an OH for fifty nine, Oh my gosh.
And so we'll we'll keep hoping that Jock does not
get to that stage, not to that point. He's he's
(10:24):
sneaking up, but I don't think he's going to get there.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Poor Chris. Yeah, such a good guy.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
I love.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
I love Chris Davis, good dude.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Yeah, and so again, And obviously it was after that
OH for fifty nine by the way, that he you know,
made hundreds of millions of dollars, most of them from
the Orioles, hitting bomb after bomb after bomb there. So, uh,
there is hope after a slump like that, and certainly
(10:51):
there's hope for Jack Peterson.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
One hundred percent. And I talked to him on I
believe it was Friday, about what he's going through, and
I told him, you know, in twenty sixteen, the Rangers
signed Ian Desmond late in spring training. He came in
here and after about the same time you're at same
point you're at. Jock. He was batting forty six and
he ended up hitting three twenty and being an All Star,
(11:15):
and Jock witn No. I like to hear that. So
h you know, he knows he hasn't been good enough
and he wants to get better, he said. Nobody's more
frustrated than he is. So again, he's going to play.
It's just a matter of where he's going to bat.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yep. And again, I think moving him down in the
batting order was good. I was surprised that Marcus Simeon
being moved into the five hole earlier in the week.
It was only the third time he'd played, you know,
batted in that position in a batting order in his career.
I thought. I remember one of the predictions I made
(11:48):
at spring training, thinking that Evan Carter was going to
be healthy, was that Marcus Simeon would leave spring training
as the five hole hitter. I think, I think that's
a good spot for him.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
Well, you know, if guys are on base, Marcus does
hit a lot of fly balls, yep. And he's a
professional hitter. He knows how to hit a fly ball
when when one's needed, and one was needed the first
inning Tuesday night, and he delivered a sacrifice fly. He
had a sacrifice fly in the the Dodgers series. He
(12:20):
gets it, and you know, if you're going to have
you know, the theory would be multiple guys on base
with Smith Langford seeger A Doulas maybe there too, the
theory would be, yeah, he's gonna have guys on base
and a chance to do some damage. Sometimes the damage
is a sacrifice fly. Sure, sure at this point with
the Rangers, and he run his damage, no.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Doubt about it. You get high five when you go
back into the dugout after a sacrifly and even a
productive out sometimes, so we're hoping for more than productive
outs and more than sackflies. But like Jeff said, runs
are runs and wins are wins, and no matter what,
the Rangers continue to win. Thank you pitching, Thank you defense,
and really thank you to everyone from from Chris Young
(13:05):
on down in baseball operations. From getting the right people, Jeff,
but also then putting them in the right places.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Yeah, and then you know it's a team effort. It's collaborative.
It's not just Bruce Bocci and they're you know, drawing
things up. He gets input from all guys and welcomes it.
And it looks like they looks like they got something here.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Yeah, it does. Should be a fun year. We will
be here talking all things Texas Rangers on the DLLs
Rangers podcast.
