Speaker 1 (00:00):
So what gets you into the Christmas spirit the most?
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Is it those favorite Christmas movie or show like Rudolph
or Frosty, Christmas music or lights that helps?
Speaker 3 (00:10):
No traffic would make that Christmas better. But other than
that on Friday, oh gosh. But I will say this
Christmas spirit for me is actually I would love to
go old school shopping in a small town like Wheeling
where I grew up. The area I grew up in,
that's all gone now, and I don't think the spirit
of I remember freezing and talking to the tree through
the window and thinking of it was real and Santa
Claus and all that. I don't think the kids get
(00:32):
to enjoy like we did back in the seventies.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
What about a good old fashioned Christmas show with great music.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
That would be awesome.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
That's what's happening at Valley Dale this coming Friday and
in studio right now. We're so excited because we're about
to have a live performance.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
It's kind of a preview of the show.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Marilyn Melendez and Ben Lucas, you guys do duets together,
and it just started really coming together here recently. But
you're going to be part of this Christmas show at Valleydale,
tell us a little bit about it, and we're gonna
give Awa tickets too.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Hi, Mandy, Hi vooths Hi.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah, somebody take that mic.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
It's so great to be on the show. Thanks for
having us, and fun to have Ben with me.
Speaker 6 (01:10):
Yes, thank you so much.
Speaker 7 (01:11):
So.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
The Rick Brunetta Big Band is performing a huge Christmas
show on the twentieth on Friday, and there's four singers
that rotate regularly with the Rick Brunetto Band.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Myself and Ben are two of them.
Speaker 5 (01:23):
And we did a Halloween show the Mystic Saw there
and we ended up singing a couple of duets, and
so now for the Christmas show, we're both singing several
songs by ourselves, we're seeing some group numbers, and then
we're doing a few duets as well.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
So there's four of us singers, tons of Christmas music.
It's twenty dollars at the door.
Speaker 7 (01:41):
You can give some information, Yeah, twenty dollars seven thirty
to ten thirty. The historic Valleydale Ballroom, fifteen ninety Sunbury Road.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
And it's beautiful, Yes, that ballroom.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I don't know if you know this, Ben, Mary Lee
knows this, but I got married there oh you did,
and then had my twenty fifth year anniversary celebration there. Yeah,
Boots grabbed the mic and talk to the crowd for
Randy and myself. But you may recognize you may be
listening to Mary Lee thinking I've heard that voice before.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Mary Lee and I worked together at Spectrum News one.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
She's like the big dog like, she's like the main
who everybody loves, and she's just just beautiful if you
want to see what she looks like.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Along with Ben, we are on live on Facebook.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
And it's your Facebook page, right, Bootsy.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Yes, it is. Go to Facebook and then we'll repost
it over on what matters.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
But this is fun for you too, Ben, because you've
been a lifelong Is your mom listening right now?
Speaker 6 (02:30):
She is say hi to your mom. You've been a
lifelong listeners my mom and dad. Yes, six ten listeners forever.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Isn't that cool?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Though? You said your mom always listened to Rush, Oh
she did, Yeah, my mom did too. Like religiously, Religiously
Rush would be very happy.
Speaker 6 (02:46):
With the election.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Now be stoked.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
So when you guys first work together, I know I
understand when you are your own solo individualist and singing
and you don't have to worry about anyone else's art.
That's kind of easy, right, compared to working with someone
and having to get everything right.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
I think performing in theater for me for so long.
I love singing with other people and doing harmonies. But yeah,
it's always fun to sing by yourself.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
You have more control.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
But when we started singing together, it just kind of clicked.
Speaker 6 (03:17):
It flowed. You know, when you have that connection with
another vocalist, it just works.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
That's life.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Chemistry is chemistry. It's hard to have someone in your
world that you click with so well. And it seems
like you guys already looked at you like almost.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Like a married couple. Over how you guys get along
so well.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I like to see it's like Randy and in this
one here there was like the Pip.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
We just practiced outside for the first time.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
We have rehearsal tonight at the Valley Dale with all
four of us singers and with Rick, and we just
practiced out in the hallway for the first time and
it was just like, all.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Right, we got this.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
So landa obviously head honcho at the Valley Dale, she said,
there's going to be surprises. She said, there's going to
be a fabulous show. There's gonna be food for everybody.
What are some of the things that people will hear
without giving too much away of why they want to
go to this Christmas show?
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Do you want to say the songs that you're singing?
Speaker 6 (04:13):
Yes, I'll give you a couple.
Speaker 7 (04:15):
So, and one of my favorites and Rick adapted the
arrangement of it is Wham's Last Christmas but big band jazz.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Mom's favorite Christmas song.
Speaker 7 (04:24):
It's a good one, but it gives a whole different
flavor to it with a big band style. And then
this year I'm doing Sinatra's arrangement of Santa claus Is
Coming to Town, which is a favorite of mine. And
then I'll also be performing one of my original tunes
that I recorded down in Nashville that a singer songwriter
couple wrote for me that Rick adapted for his band.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
So your your what's your regular job? Are you all
times performer or you have.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
A My day job is I work at an Indian
rug gallery, Grandview, So I do rug and carpet sales
and then so that pays my bills right, and I'm
not doing that, I and perform.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Music American, I know, anything like that of your phone
anything I have.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
Not I've been told to try out for the voice,
but because Judge, now.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
That's the one I would do if I were to
do any of them, the voice, I just.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Think of that sometimes you think, you know what, I'm
just gonna take a chance, because really life is all
about taking chance.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah, you roll the dice for me.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
It's just so fun to be able to perform again
because it had been years. Aside from singing in church,
I used to perform professionally all the time. But it
was because of Mindy going to her twenty fifth wedding
anniversary that even met Rick and that all this happened
for me. And now I'm performing regularly again. So it's
just been a huge blessing. But I'm singing Mariah Carri's
All I Want for Christmas, you know that's a big one. Really, Yes,
(05:40):
I'm singing a Winter Wonderland.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
And what else am I singing? I'll be home for Christmas?
Oh that's a sad way.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
We're singing Seasons of Love from Reent and we're singing
baby it's cold outside.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
Oh yes, of course.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
And you're allowed to sing.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
Arrangement Yeah, it's not cancel anymore.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
They're bringing that back.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Longa said something also about Vulnerability is going to be performing,
is that right.
Speaker 7 (06:11):
Yes, one of their core groups, and they've been performing
for like the past two weekends at the Ballroom for
their annual Christmas things. So they're coming back this coming Friday.
Their their choir is going to sing a couple of pieces.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
So what's If you haven't.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Been inside the Valleydale Ballroom ever, you need to see it.
It is so historic and they have the walls just
decorated with history with people who.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Have performed there. Frank Sinatra.
Speaker 6 (06:34):
Yeah, they all stood right there, right there on.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
That stage, which is very special to be able to
get to perform there. And I just say everything about
that I do, Oh, I do all the time. I mean,
I'm such a music nerd.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
And with that history and I love Frank Sinatra, that
screams Christmas to me as well, turning on Frank Sinatra Christmas.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Music and cooking and making cookies. That's decorating.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
And yes, so when I first walked in there, I
just started doing laps around and looking at all the pictures.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
And then to be able to get to sing there
is just so special.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
My parents have come to the shows and everyone that
comes like this is such a great experience. It's so
different from anywhere else too, which just has so much history,
and you just kind of get swept away there and
you kind of get lost for a little bit. It's
a little escape, it's a little logical place.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Back in time.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
We're going to break what's only taking us.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Out with No, we're gonna come back, and they're going
to perform after the.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Break, although we'd sing that one break, No, you can
do that, but.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
They probably have to warm up their voices there.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
Thank you and me.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
Well, we'll tease ahead and say we're gonna we're going
to sing baby it's called outside Nice.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
Okay, thank you.
Speaker 2 (07:35):

to our producer Ashley, and you guys will see you.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
At the show.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Do you guys feel that Christmas songs are so harmony
friendly that you just love them? Like granted, I like
Back and Black by a CDC, But when I it's
not a Christmas song and Willie Nelson any other traditional songs.
But when I think about Christmas songs are just always
harmony and always I don't know words, I'm not a
music guy, but it amazes me how they're just so
(09:34):
spiritual and make you feel.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
Good when you hear them.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
They all have great melodies that you along to. It
kind of just warm your heart.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Even the worst singing person you have in the car
with it, he can sing Rudolph pretty good.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
So it's always ulf today.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
To give out because you hear and you see Mary
Lee on Spectrum News anchoring the news in the evenings,
and you, my friend men are on the radio right now.
Speaker 7 (10:00):
Yes, So thanks to Michael McCoy with iHeartMedia Columbus. He's
been playing my Christmas recordings these past four years on
three three the Bus, including my newest single that I
recorded with a friend of mine named Ashley Krinn.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
It's a beautiful duet.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
So tune in throughout the next couple weeks before they
make the switch back to regular music and you'll be
able to hear some of my tunes mixed in there
with all the greats. Is that so crazy?
Speaker 1 (10:22):
When you hear your it is weird, like you're driving downtown.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Do you know the ratings almost double during the switch
to Christmas songs?
Speaker 6 (10:30):
Yeah, I believe it.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
It does earlier and earlier.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
All right, let's do it.
Speaker 6 (10:34):
Are you ready?
Speaker 1 (10:35):

Speaker 1 (10:38):

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Scooky? Please don't hurry, maybe just a few minutes more.
Speaker 6 (11:17):

Speaker 1 (11:19):
You really can't stay.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
Baby, don't hold out.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
But it's cold outside, baby, it's cold?
Speaker 4 (11:29):

Speaker 4 (11:43):

the voice.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
You need to what's the other one?
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah, American idol?
Speaker 4 (11:52):
You said you can't do old American idol? That's old.
About the pants on the ground guy, he went pretty far.
Remember he was like sixty two years old.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
I don't think he got to Hollywood.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
No, he didn't get a ticket, Merrily, What do you
like better anchoring the news or singing in front of
a crowd, because you know, one crowd, but one there's
a live audience.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
If you've seen my commercial, it's all about storytelling. It
runs of the time.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
But there's those parallels with singing and telling stories, and
then with being able to anchor the news and tell
Ohio stories.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
But I like the combo.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
Actually, I was so focused on my career for years,
and now that I'm able to sing again, it's just
very fulfilling now to get.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
To do both. So both then, do you like to
sell carpet.
Speaker 6 (12:35):
More or sing? Live? Route? Much prefer singing.
Speaker 4 (12:39):
I don't perform selling carpet. How happy could you be
doing that? I don't know. It's like I guess, I
guess if you get the right customer, are you.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Sing Aladdin that magic carpet ride? When people come in?
Speaker 4 (12:51):
There you go?
Speaker 1 (12:53):
If you sell some more?
Speaker 2 (12:54):
No, you, guys, you can hear these two live in
person this Friday at valley Dale Ballroom. Tickets are on
sale now, so just look up Valleydale and twenty dollars tickets.
