Speaker 1 (00:00):
And it's time to start talking about back to school time.
We have three young ladies in the studio right now
along with doctor Cohen, Doctor Brian Cohen of Cohen Orthopedic,
who are getting ready to go back to school? Girls.
Are you ready? Yes? Oh? We have one yes and
two no's. Yes. Scotland, the friend of Libby, says yes.
(00:24):
Why are you ready for school?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Because I get a new teacher.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
He didn't like you last year's teacher. I did, okay,
but you just want something ready for change? And what
great are you going into? Or third grade? Is such
a fun year? Libby? You said, no, you're not ready
to for summer to end? Is that what it is?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (00:42):
What was your favorite part about summer?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Everything?
Speaker 1 (00:46):
And ice cream? They're eating ice cream right now? Is
that ice cream pretty good?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yeah? School lunches though, are they pretty good?
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Well there? Oh oh new school? Oh yeah. And then
Emerson near a whole other issue that we need to
talk about. You guys, keep listening because what she went
through was kind of right up doctor Cohen's alley. So
you're going into what grade? Seventh seventh grade? Now? Your
school is sixth, seventh and eighth or no, yeah, that's
(01:14):
how ours was in middle school. Sometimes it's a little different.
You have some some.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, my old school is preschool through eighth grade.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Oh okay, wow, really tiny eighth Yeah, that is tiny.
So now you don't get to be the head of
the school though. Usually eighth graders is like that big
year where you get to be the and then when
you're a freshman, you go right back to the bottom
of the total pool. So you're right in the middle
in seventh grade. Are you looking forward to it?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
So you walk in here and these girls are just
just beautiful, beautiful daughters of you, doctor Cohen. And she's
in a boot. And when you're a daughter of an
orthopedic surgeon, you're in a boot for a pretty good reason. Right.
What happened?
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I was tumbling on the track and I fell because.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
You're a cheerleader. Yeah, how high up were you?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Oh? I was tumbling, So I.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Thought you meant tumbling like a stunt. Okay, so you
were doing back handsprings and things like that. Does that
ever happened before?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Did you know right away that you did something bad?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Oh? Well, like I did it and then it hurt
really bad, and then I didn't want to get yelled at,
so I kept doing it.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Oh, doctor Cohen, I got to bring you into the conversation.
How many times does that happen to athletes though? Where
they do injure some part of their body and they
just keep on going for fear of getting in trouble
or to show everybody I'm tough, I can handle this.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I mean, it happens all the time. It's it's it's
a mindset that we're kind of brought up with that,
you know, you keep going till you can't go no more.
And you know, it's weird that it would be in
a twelve year old that that feels that pressure. But
obviously I think this was their first practice outside, right.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
No, it was our first time tumbling, Okay.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
So it was the beginning of something new. She's it's
starting a new team, she's going to a new school.
I'm sure all these things are in her head that
you know, she doesn't want to be.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
She wants to suck it up exactly. Yeah did you cry? Yeah,
you did cry very hard.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Well. I was like, because like we do tumbling and
tooke motions, and then like my friend was sitting out
because she heard her back and I like started like
crying while I was doing my emotions, and then the
coach told me to like go and sit down.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
So the question is when did Dad get the call?
You know, he does this and deals with this his
entire career. He does this every day, but not with
his own daughter. So what happened? Did you have your
phone with you? No? No, she didn't have her phone.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
No.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
The coach called Carrie, okay and before, and Carrie was
very concerned based on what he said. He's like, you
have to come get your daughter. She hurt herself, you know,
not like it just seemed. It seemed like it was
a big deal. So when she called.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Me, so I didn't give you the details or Carrie
the details. You didn't know the specifics. Just come get
your daughter's side and hurt.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
And then you know, it was Friday morning. I'm in
the middle of surgery. My phone rings, and we always
I always have somebody answer because it could be a patient,
it could be you know, something very important. Obviously Emerson
getting hurt is very important. But it's like I can't
do anything, and carry hadn't seen her yet, so it
was more like, well, go go see her. And see
how bad things are, and then we'll decide what to do,
you know, take her to the er, go to the office.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
But as we discussed before, she had plans for a
Friday evening. Emerson did so bigger than her. Her foot
was her plans for that evening, which was Morgan Wallen
with her friends for her birthday up in Cleveland.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Well, you still got to go to that, right, you
know what a big ticket that was Morgan walland it
sells out wherever he goes anymore. And to sell out
two nights in a row in Cleveland. What was it like?
It was fun, that's it. It was fun.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
No, No, it was really fun.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
What's your favorite Morgan Wallan song?
Speaker 2 (04:54):
I like all of them, but I like his old
songs because I feel like I haven't heard his news
song like as much.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Were you there when Kid Rock walked out with him?
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Oh my gosh, did the crowd go crazy?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah? Well yeah, but we all meet. My mom said
that it was Snoop Dog and then she she refuses
to say that she didn't say that, but I know
she did.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Mom's you know, that's just a mom thing. Libby was
there too, Libby, you got to do you what's your
favorite Morgan Wall song? I don't know, you don't know
what was it the cool concert? Was it crowded? Like crazy?
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (05:34):
What does it deal with Morganwall in these days? Like
people love him, Doctor Cohen.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
I mean I like his music. Yeah, I just think
that you know, he's I mean, if you think about
kid rock back in the day, Yeah, he's almost like
a kid rock type, you know, country rock singer.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
There's a little he's kind of a little rebellious too. Yeah,
you know he's a little checkered past. Yeah, and I
think that's intriguing to people. So back to the injury,
because you know how many parents are probably listening and
they've gotten those calls before their son or their daughter
is injured, either during a game, at practice, at school
and gym class. It's one of those calls that we
(06:11):
never want to hear, especially when you don't know the
details of it. And then when your dad's an orthopedic surgeon,
it probably intensifies a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Yes, well, obviously you go to the what's the worst
case scenario and then you kind of work backwards, you know,
is this a fracture? Is you know how bad it is,
and then obviously, you know, you just feel terrible. You know,
obviously you want to absorb the pain that they're going through,
but you can't anything.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah, and absolutely anything, even if someone's mean to them
at school. Correct, You never want that to happen because
I always have felt like parents take whatever their kid
is going through. It affects a parent ten times worse
than how a kid is feeling about it. Libby, do
you think that if somebody's ever mean to you at school?
You think it bothers you or your mom more my mom?
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (06:57):
So usually kids don't understand that. What about you, Scotland
anything so too?
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Ever, does anyone ever mean to you at school?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Sometimes?
Speaker 1 (07:04):
All? Don't you hate to hear that? You hate to
hear that.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
There's no reason for it?
Speaker 1 (07:09):
No, No, but that's you know what, especially being a girl,
You're just gonna deal with situations. It's just you know
what comes into play the most. Do you know why
other girls are mean to other girls the majority of times? Everson?
What do you think is the number one reason talking
to any guesses?
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Because they're jealous?
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Jealousy Jealousy, they say, is the root of all evil.
If someone isn't nice to you girls. Chances are they're
probably jealous. What do you think, doctor Cohen?
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I agree, and it's just it's one of those that's
in life.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
In life, Yeah, but it does start early. Don't you
think it starts earlier with the school age girls than
it does with boys. I don't think boys even care,
you know what I mean. They just don't care as
much as girls do about different things. What they look like,
what they dress, what do you have in your hair,
your clothes, you're wearing your shoes?
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Well, you know, it's interesting you say that because, like
we said before, Emerson and Libby are both changing schools,
and in their old school they wear uniforms, so they
didn't have to so everybody wore the same thing. So
it'll be interesting to see how how this changes.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
That is a huge change. That's a big deal. Emerson,
I'm gonna ask you first, did you mind wearing a uniform?
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Uh? Some days I did, just because it was annoying
wearing the same thing every day. But like sometimes you'd
have like dressed down days, But then like those days
are kind of annoying because I didn't know it's where
now I have to pick out now for every day.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
There was talk across the country about all schools going
to uniform because I don't think that you think, you
don't think. Well, this was their argument was like, if
everybody is in a uniform, then you don't know how
much money a family has or doesn't have, because everybody's equal,
they're all wearing a uniform. I think you're right, though, Emerson,
(08:58):
I don't think it will ever come to that, but
that was one of the arguments to say I think
all schools should be in uniform. I will say this
when Randy, my husband, taught and coached in Catholic schools
and he's back there in another Catholic school. Now, when
you have dressed down days like you just brought up,
kids act differently when they're not in uniform. They kind
(09:19):
of let their guard down when it comes to behavior.
Do you see what I'm saying, doctor Cohen?
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Yeah, well, I mean, and also it lets that personality
shine through a little bit.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
It does that as well. And You're not all the same,
but they act a little when I'm not in uniform.
I can just there their behavior wasn't quite as good
as it was when they were in uniform. Lebby, do
you like wearing uniform? You're excited to not have to
wear a uniform anymore? Kind of Scotland. Did you wear
(09:47):
a uniform before? Never? Never? Are you glad you never
had to wear a school uniform? Of course? All right,
So when we come back, doctor Cohen, it is that
time of the year where high school football is going
to start up, cheerleading, everything that goes along with it.
How important are those physicals that kids get before their
sports starts and how busy are you? And we need
(10:09):
some words of wisdom on those backpacks. I saw a
post that you guys created for co orthopedic backpacks can
really do a lot of damage on these little bodies, can't.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
They, especially with I mean, I think it's changing now
that they're going to more computers and stuff as opposed
all the books that are true. Yes, I think we'll
see a shift from this concern. But yeah, definitely in
the past with all those books they recirement, it's definitely
not good for them.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
All right, we're gonna continue this back to school conversation.
We're so glad you're with us on this sunny Sunday
here on raw on six ten WTV and always protected
by the undefeated. Titletale. We're back in a moment, can
you guys sing? Go ahead? Keep singing it. You got
(10:56):
a little Morgan ballin. These ladies all got to go
to Cleveland two nights in a row in Cleveland, Morgan Wallen,
and they got to be there When Kid Rock walked
out on stage, not Snoop Dogg, but Kid Rock walked
out on stage? Did everybody roar and go crazy? Though?
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Was it?
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah? I can only imagine which I love that song too,
not by Morgan Wallen, completely different song altogether, But anyway,
it is back to school time, ladies. Some of you
are ready, some of you aren't ready. Ready. You know
what the favorite thing was about going back to school
when I was your age? Could not no, I did no.
I didn't even like back to school shoping. I didn't
like shopping at all. It was just I was always
(11:36):
excited to see my friends. I couldn't wait to go
back to school to see the friends that I didn't
get to see all summer. Right, you're looking forward to
that yet not any friends except Oh you got a
new school, but you don't know anyone that goes to
that school.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Only one because they all got redistricted. Hey yeah, yeah,
but still.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
You know what, it is a little intimidating for any
grade to start at a new school. And I don't
mean a new school because you're becoming a sixth grader
or a freshman. I mean this is going to be
a whole group of new friends. But I think it's
great opportunities. Do you guys have great personalities. You're going
to meet so many friends. You're gonna love it.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
The nice thing about is that it's in the neighborhood,
so there's people that Libby knows that she may not
realize her in her class so so or in the.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
School at least.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah, so it'll be it won't be as bad as
she thinks. But it's definitely, like you said, it's a
new school and it's a new situation.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
New situation, new challenge. But look at it this way.
You already have all of your old friends through the years,
going to the Catholic school, going to the school that
you had to wear that uniform. Now you're going to
keep those friendships. You're just going to build onto that
and make new friends and you can bring everybody together
on one big group circle and have a big old
party at doctor Cohen's house. How's that?
Speaker 3 (12:54):
So?
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Yes? Good? She's yawning. She's yawning here.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
She's still tired from the concert.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
So I just learned something about you. Am I allowed
to tell everybody what happened to you? And you can
tell well because I asked Emerson as we were going
to break she's in a boot because she injured herself tumbling.
I thought, when you meant tumbling, you guys are doing
duo stunts stuff and they were throwing you up in
the air and I don't know how hard you were,
how high you were up in the air, but tumbling
and on Friday, right before the Morgan Wallen concerts. So
(13:24):
now she's in a boot. So you really won't know
the extent of it till win tomorrow, till tomorrow. But
you get that call and you think, you're oh my gosh.
There's so many parents that deal with the situation because
you dread having that call your son or daughter has
been injured, come pick them up. But you got the call,
you dealt with it, and you're going to have a
lot of those calls because football season is about to begin.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
You know.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
It's interesting even the ramp up to the season is
just as kind of injury prone as this season itself.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
You know, oh yeah, you got double two days and
they're out in the heat. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
And you know, unfortunately, we had a couple of female
athletes that we took care of with ACL tairs. A
couple like going back a couple of years ago that
came in with injuries to their other knee and they
repeated an acale town in their opposite and it's it's devastating.
They go to this whole recovery, they're just getting back
into their season and they get reinjured and it's their
other knee and they got the same thing.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
I've always heard that girls are more susceptible to ACL tears.
Why is that.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
It has to do with There's a lot of things.
It's hormones, anatomy. I mean, there's a lot of different.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
It is true.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
It is true.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
So anyway, I was asking Emerson if her boot, if
her foot itches, or if she's in any pain, and
she said, yeah, it does itch. But then you diveulged
a little secret about your dad because you have something
at home. What do you get to use?
Speaker 3 (14:46):
It's like, I don't know what is it. It's a
nice machine. So it runs cold water and compresses around
her foot.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
And that takes the itch away.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Wells a swelling one. Yeah, I think the itching is
from because she was sitting with her foot dangling, so
that the blood flow too was increased with probably that
cause swelling in the foot right now.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
See, well you got look at your dad. He's an
orthopedic surgeon. But the whole funny thing about that little
machine is that she said, well, my dad had it
at home because he fell. Yeah, what happened?
Speaker 3 (15:22):
I fell?
Speaker 1 (15:22):
I tripped at work?
Speaker 3 (15:25):
Oh yeah, I forgot that part.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Yea, and not everybody falls at work. Were you like
in the middle of a surgery? What happened?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I like going to surgery.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Or I just finished the surgery and I was walking
out of the room.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
He tripped on a wire.
Speaker 3 (15:39):
He was pulling on something that was around my feet,
and he caught me and I landed directly on my elbow.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Oh hell you do.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
I tore my triceps.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Oh my gosh. How I wish Boots was here today
just to hear that story, because Boots, we were in
the old studio back at the six' TEN wtvn, Building iHeartRadio,
building and he was walking across the studio and got
caught up in one of these cables and he tripped and.
Fell you know WHAT i, DID i took a picture of.
HIM i was laughing so. Hard it's always been funny
(16:08):
to me WHEN i see people trip and. Fall but,
anyway you got that machine and you kept hold of.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
It, WELL i got the machine because it decreases the
swelling after, surgery SO i had to have it. Fixed
SO i had, surgery so that was part of the.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
Recovery so what's your best piece of advice for all
these young athletes that are getting ready to kick off
another season of high school football and the cheerleaders and
the other athletes involved with. IT i, mean even if
you're a, fan you jump up and down too much
in the, stands you could tear. Something so best words
of with them from the Doctor cohen would be WHAT.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
I THINK i would call, it. Pregame you want to
make sure that first of, all you want to make
sure your condition's. Good you don't you can't just walk
from sitting on the couch for most of the summer
and walk onto the field and think you're not going
to put yourself at. Risk so you want to be,
training preparing yourself for the. Season but that also includes
something that nobody really likes. Doing that includes, stretching stretching,
(17:04):
before stretching, after just so that you're you, know you're
loose and if something does, happen it may not it
may not affect you the same as it would is
if you hadn't, stretched so you may avoid an.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Injury, well let's say you're an. Adult you're not playing sports,
anymore but you work out every once in a. While
stretching is still so important before and after a. Workout
one takes.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
TIME i mean it does.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Take, time and a lot of people don't have time
to even work, out but they, said, Okay i'll go
do a quick. Workout they're not going to spend the
time stretching before and. After but you, say you could
do a lot of damage if you, don't you.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Can, YEAH i mean that's what you're going to get
more of the the annoying injuries like your sprains and your.
Strains you, know it may not cause a major tear
or something like, that but you will it could affect
you just as bad as a tear where you're just
uncomfortable and symptomatic for.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Months and the older we, get the more we feel
it for. Sure, okay real quickly before we go to
break here about thirty. Seconds, backpacks you're not quite as
anymore because you don't you don't have all those stacks
of books anymore in those, backpacks.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
CORRECT i mean you know in the school they had dickers.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Lockers, yeah you put, yourself but you got to carry
him to school and back, home, right.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Yeah but but they mostly they mostly carried their computer
back and. FORTH i, mean my, job my homework last
year was to make Sure emerson's computer was plugged in
every night so that the battery wasn't, dead because she
gets in trouble if it was.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Dead so you took it upon yourself to do.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
THAT i need an. Assignment and sometimes there. Was there
were a few days THAT i, missed, well but not a.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Lot it was over like. Break, yeah it'd be like
we were Finishing christmas break and MY i didn't have
my computer on the counter every. Night it was it
was in the. Mudroom.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Emerson you know, what you got a good. DADDY a
lot of daddies wouldn't look after their kid like, that
to make sure that the stuff is all plugged in
and ready to, go all, right just for you, ladies
and you, too Doctor. Cohen we have really coming up
the topic is what any guesses? School back to? School? Baby, yes,
Yeah and they're kind of easy questions if you, guys
(19:08):
even if you don't know, IT i think you'd be
able to guess some of the things like what's a
girl's favorite, subject what's a boy's favorite? Subject things like,
that how many teachers are there in the, world maybe
not the world with the country back to school? Questions
we Have rusty who's our? Champion who is going to
go up Against? Rusty call us up at six one
four eight two one nine eight eight six six one
four eight two one nine eight eight six fun easy
(19:33):
back to school stuff and why not? Play you get
to win rooster, stuff, roosters bucks and car washes and
all kinds of things like. That six one, four eight
two one nine eight six one
