Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, we just heard from Democratic challenger Adam Miller, who
is going up against the incumbent Mike Carrey in the
fifteenth district. Mike is now on the line in joining
the conversation. First and foremost, Mike, I want to say
my condolences to Joeanne Davidson. What a wonderful woman, What
a pioneer when it came to women in politics, the

(00:21):
very first female Speaker of the House for the state
of Ohio, and I think she had overall more than
sixty years of public service. I had the opportunity to
interview her before, and what a lovely woman.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
She was, a wonderful friend, somebody that I first had
the chance to meet back in the nineties, and she
just was a remarkable a trailblazer, and she had the
Joeanne Davison Institute, which brought people into politics from all
across the state. Definitely a big loss for the state
of Ohio, but we also lost a couple of weeks

(00:55):
ago Dave Hobson, Congressman from Springfield, and he was another
trail somebody that was I think the pattern patterned my
career a little bit like Dave's. You know, he was
always somebody that was willing to reach across the aisle
bring projects back into the district, and we lost him.
I think he was eighty seven. We're gonna we're going
to do something in Springfield, I believe next weekend for him.

(01:17):
But just I had a chance to meet with the
family in Springfield last week, his son, his wife, and
his daughter, and he was the first person that I
ever knocked on a door for in nineteen eighty eight
when he was running for Stage.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
So just two wonderful titans and we lost. We lost
just another trailblazer in terms of advocacy and Brooke Cheney.
So it's been a it's been a tough couple of
weeks for a lot of us here in Franklin County.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Well, we want to talk about you because you're up again.
You got a Democratic challenger in Adam Miller, and we
just had him on the line. Some of the things
that he brought up was that you wanted to close
the VA and how you support an abortion van.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
I'll tell you there's that old phrase my dad used
to My dad used to say, some people can lie
when tell them the truth is easier. Absolutely not. And
there's you know I'm a veteran. You know, I went
in and in nineteen eighty nine spent ten years in
so that is just false. I've been a champion for
the VA. So I didn't hear his interviews. So let's

(02:26):
just let's go through each one of the things that
he said and we'll correct them.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Those are the two that really stood out to me. Boots,
what about you?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah, that's I asked him was his opinion as example
of social justices? And he talked about getting all the
kids educated. I look at social justice as give people
free money so they don't have to work hard like
I have and Mindy has and other.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
People that I know, all of us for everything I got.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
I never had any branded to him except for great
parents and a good football coach.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
So why should you stay in office? Why should people
continue to vote for you?

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Mike? Well, listen, I think the first thing is I
am not a career politician. I've only been in office since.
You know, I came in a special election when Steve
Stuivers decided to run the Chamber. And you know, in
the last three years, we've brought back over sixty million
dollars of projects for our congressional district. We've also done,

(03:18):
I think in a very bipartisan way. We've introduced twenty
seven pieces of legislation, many of which are moving things
that have to do with opportunity zones and housing. We
have a bill that we just introduced with the Democrat
out of Los Angeles, a bipartisan bill that will help
our inner cities and our suburbs. And so you know,
I sit on Ways and Means. It's the most powerful

(03:40):
committee in Washington, and I think we've really done some
great things. And look, you know, people can what settle phrase,
people can lie loud. We just got to tell the
truth longer. And that's what I plan to do here
in the next few weeks or the next few days.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
So my big thing is veterans, veterans, veterans. Anything we
do is I try to take care of on or
flight and different things that I'm a part of. And
I'm so proud of that.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
But thank you.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
When I go to the No One, thank you guys.
And when I go to homeless areas with some of
the church's handout blankets and stuff and different things that
we do. It saddens me to see the vets homeless.
Is there anything.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Anything that we can do.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
We know their mentally, Oh, I get it. They got
PTSD and you talk to these young women, they're just
so lost in life and they don't have their ID.
Merri Ginther and his cronies will take a Bobcat when
the Upper Armington people get offended that the tent city's
getting too big, and he goes into the Bobcat and
just mows it all down. Well, they have no driver's license,
no so security numbers. How do we get these guys

(04:37):
back into the grid.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
No, absolutely, I think that's the one thing that we've
got to do a better job, you know. And I
think all of us that have ever worn the uniform
understand that. And there are some things that we need
to do. But I think for anybody to say that
I want to cut the VA, I mean we need
to plus up the VA. And I think if you
look under President Trump, that's exactly what he was trying

(05:00):
to do. I've visited the vas across the country. I've
seen firsthand. But but on the mental health side of things,
we definitely have to do a better job of that.
And I think that that is I think the President
is committed to doing that, and I think once, you know,
once we have the Senate. I mean, we have done
so many bills in the House that are just going
over to the Senate and they just kind of sit there.

(05:22):
So I think that I think what's going to happen
is the Senate is going to go to I think
we'll keep the majority in the House. I think the
Senate will flip, and I think Donald Trump will be
president and I think you're going to see some very
pro veteran things that we'll be able to do over
the next two or three years. And mental health is
definitely one of the most important.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Mike, there's no doubt that Donald Trump wins Ohio. Will
they say right now? He's up ten or twelve points.
And last election he received more votes than any president candidate,
any presidential candidate in the history of Ohio voting. So
my question is, how did Ohio become not a battleground
state anymore? I remember when we used to be about
ground state, but really it is so read. What happened

(06:04):
Mike along the way that made Ohio so read and
no longer about a ground state?

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, I think there are a lot of things. I mean,
if you go back when I first started working at
the State House as a page back in nineteen ninety one.
I remember that Republicans always won Upper Arlington. They did
really well in the suburbs in Columbus, but they never
had the Mahoning Valley, they never had the Ohio value.
And so you've just seen this change. And I think

(06:31):
people that are concerned about the cost of energy, people
that are involved in the energy industry, you know, they
saw not really with Bill Clinton, but I think they
saw with Obama just a trend to eliminate those jobs.
So I think you're seeing just a whole spectrum change.
And look at West Virginia for example. I mean, so
you know, West Virginia borders Ohio. I mean, I can

(06:51):
just tell you five six years ago, every elected office
outside of Shellingmore Capital was Democrat, you know, and now
you can't find a Democrat in West Virginia. So I think,
I think Ohio, I think it's a regional thing, quite frankly,
but but I think it's also the policies. I mean,
let's I mean, let's look where we are, you know.
And this is what I tell everybody when I go
and to speak, and I have to quote Ronald Reagan

(07:13):
are you better off four years ago than you are today?
Or were you better off four years ago than you
are today? And nobody can tell you that they are.
I mean, inflation still going crazy, interest rates. I've got
a twenty three year old son. I mean, I know
that he'd loved to buy it, so you're right there
with me. So he just actually his birthday was yesterday.

(07:33):
He might be listening, but you know it was, you know,
and he made me a grandfather, so you know, I
just think that there are so many things that we
could be doing, pro growth, things that we could be doing.
And I think that's the big issue moving forward is
you know, if you look at TCJA, which is the
Trump tax cuts, they are sick to expire in twenty

(07:54):
twenty five. So we we in the House and Ways
and Means so the bill will come through. Are the
Ways and Means Committee. We have been working doing work
groups all over the country, ten different working groups. And
this is not just energy, this is affordable housing, li tech,
research development, things that our business does need. And these
are the things we've got to move forward next year.

(08:14):
And that's why we have to keep the majority in Washington.
In the House.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Well, we will be watching this race. Obviously, another big,
big race is Bernie Marino and Shared Brown.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
And he did say it was just with Bernie today.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Cley, I just saw you briefly a few days ago
at Genoa. That crowd was unbelievable, and you know it
surprised me when they asked how many people have early voted,
about three fourths of that crowd voted A resolutely.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
We're having Bernie on next Sunday. I was talked to
him on the phone last night. I'm trying to get
him in here in person. We love Bernie. Bernie is
a straight up guy, and my neighbors hate his signs
in my yard and I love it.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Mike Carrie, thank you so much from the thirteenth District.
One other thing, I'm glad that your grandparent, that your
twenty three year old send made you a grandparent, and
that mine has not done that yet. I want that
long long years down the road. I'm not ready for that.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Well, I'll tell you what, he's a cutie. He is
definitely a cute. Well, listen, I really appreciate you spending
some time with me on Sunday, and I'll be happy
to join you anyside give us your website. Oh boy,
just just Google Mike carry anytime on there.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Mike, we'd love to have you.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Make sure you don't go to make sure you don't
go to the ones that Adam Miller's putting out there.
Just use mine. Okay, we'll do that, all right. Thanks,
all right, you guys take care, all.
