Speaker 1 (00:05):
Lake life, all kinds of music you hear coming out
of these boats while you're cruising along any lake in
the state of Ohio. It's a great way to live
and I'm so glad that we are doing this. We
are also talking about today it became a kind of
a controversial subject, Christopher Columbus, this statue that was here
in the city of Columbus for years.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
They decided to take it down.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I believe the year was twenty twenty, and now there's
an effort to possibly bring it back. So I'm half Italian,
My mom was one hundred percent Italian. Carmela Nancy Benedetto.
Obviously this subject, it hits so close to home and
it means something to me, and it means something to
a lot of the great Italian people throughout central Ohio
(00:49):
and beyond. So now they're trying to decide where to
put Christopher Columbus, this beautiful statue back up.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
We do have a couple of callers.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
We have Lynn, we have Kendall and Londa, who is
so familiar with this topic, is going to give us
a bit of a background with this as well. First
we're going to go to Lynn. Lynn, you have a
suggestion of where you think this statue should go.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Well, as far as the statue, I think it should
be put right back where it was taken from. I
think it is part of our city's history. And yes,
it should have never been taken down in the first place.
I think that's agree.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I agree with you, Lynn.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, I think that it was during a time with
this country was just taking down every type of controversial
statue with no rhyme or reason. They just wanted something
to make a statement, and I think that's where this
Christopher Columbus statue fell in line with Yeah, I think.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
We do need to preserve our city's history. Mindy, I
do have a tip for you about lake life, Yes,
and your dog falling into the water. Yeah, they make
a ramp that floats on top of the water and
you can just attach that to the dock and then
if the dogs I have an above ground and I
have one of those because if my dogs fall in,
(02:03):
they can't get out of an above ground pool.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
That's a great idea, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
And it just it's yeah, look into that. It's a
dog ramp for the water. And yeah, anytime they get in,
they'll be able to climb out on their round. No
more mindy jumping.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Lynn, bless you. That's a great idea. I'm so glad
you called. I loved your opinion on the statue and
I love that tip. Yeah, if anyone wants to call
in with advice about lake life, since now Randy and
I are our new lake Lifers, we will take all
the advice we can get. Lynn, thank you for calling.
We're going to send it over to Kendall. Kendall, you
also have a suggestion of where you think Christopher Columbus's
(02:40):
statue should be built again or not built.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
It's all built, it should go up.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I wanted to weigh in on the property tax, but
what I will say about the statue is yes, it
should never have been taken down, and I think the
Italian community should have had a loud voice outcry about that.
I had neighbors that were two doors down that were
full Italian on both sides, and I never heard a
(03:05):
word out of them. Somew's something.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Listen, growing up half Italian and seeing my Italian side
of the family, that's one hundred percent. I can't believe
you never heard a word.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Out of them.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Because if Italians are one thing, and trust me, I know,
I'm half They're loud. Italians are very loud. We talk
with our hands. We're very excited and emotional people. And
I'm surprised you didn't hear a word out of them.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
But i'd heard on the news media or anything like that.
I mean, to my knowledge, i'd just shame that.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, okay, well we're talking about it now, that's for sure.
I want to get to landa. But you had one.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Quick word about property taxes real fast? How is that?
Speaker 4 (03:43):
What I wanted to say is I live in southern
Delaware County in the only Tangi school district.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Uh huh.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
And this was at least ten years ago, and I
dug into it, and I wanted to find out because
I knew prior to that the Supreme the Ohio Supreme
Court said you cannot use property tax to basically fund
the bulk of schools. Okay, but they were still doing it.
And so I called around and this one office I called.
(04:11):
The woman said, the reason that it was still going
on even after what the Supreme Court of Ohio said
was because no one will enforce the law.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
So and then when we had a levy levy past
year and a half it failed, And in almost forty
years of me living up here, there's only there's been
two levees that I'm aware of that failed for the
Old Tangy School district.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
And then just let me say this real quick. The
superintendent got on TV. He looked like he was going
to sit down and cry. Really, they're top heavy in
administration to begin with, you need to do something the
taxpayers cannot keep paid.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
We are absolutely, absolutely, And then if you go inside
their schools. I was a substitute teacher in Old TANGI listen,
they're great schools. So yeah, I mean there there's a
lot of money being spent for sure. Listen, I'm glad
you called in, Kendall, and I think a lot of
people feel like you do.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
One hundred percent. Thanks for calling in.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
We're gonna send it over to Londa now because back
to the issue of the statue of Christopher Columbus. Londa,
you are so involved in this, are you not? And
you have been since the very beginning. Do we have
Londa on the air on the line. We're gonna try
(05:43):
this one more time, reaching out to Londa about the statue.
The Christopher Columbus statue.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Are you there, Londa? Nope? Do we have her? Do
we not have her? She just disconnected.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Okay, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna take a
break because I really want Londa. I want to give
her enough time because she has been so involved with
this issue right from the very beginning. Let's take a
break and we will talk to Londa on the other
side of the break, and then we'll push our discussion
with city school districts asking for voters for more money
(06:20):
following that.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Does that sound good? Everybody? All right? You are listening
to her all on six.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
TEN Wutvn always protected by The Undefeated. Tattletale we'll be right, back,
everybody all, right, folks as we're. Back boots is off,
today but we are live on His facebook, page so
you can still chime in that.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Way leave us comments as you are listening to the.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Show one of the big topics we're talking about and
it's kind of a resurgence, again and we already had
a couple of callers with great opinions on.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
It AND i love when.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
People call in if you have an opinion on anything
we're talking. About this show is always more fun when
we include you as, well AND i think we Have
londa On. Landa we were just talking a couple of
people called in and we were talking about the, statue
The Christopher columbus, statue beautiful statue that stood in Downtown
(07:10):
columbus for how many?
Speaker 5 (07:12):
Years, yes it's with sixty five, years six year, seventieth
the anniversary of the statue's.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
INSTALLMENT i don't know if you were, listening but we
had a couple of people call in and they both
said it they should have never decided to take this
statue down in the first. Place so was it taken
down in twenty twenty and what was the main reason for?
Speaker 6 (07:36):
That Thea mayer, said the main reason was because the
statue is a work of. Art it is not just some.
Statue this is an expensive. Piece it is a gorgeous.
Piece it was a gift to The italians Of columbus
and a gift To, columbus and they felt that it
was going to be damaged and that was one of
(07:58):
the reasons because they said the base it was not as.
Steady you, know over the, years there were some disturbance
to the installation of the, statue and they felt if
they removed it they could keep it because they were
fearful it would be knocked down over or.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Worse that's why it was taken.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Down it had nothing to do with the riots of
twenty twenty and The George floyd situation and all the
other statues across the country coming down at the.
Speaker 6 (08:24):
Time it was because of the riots and because of
everything that was going on that they felt that statue
was ear. Mark it had already had paint dumped on, it.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Okay that, way so they were trying to preserve.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
It then, supposedly oh, supposedly all, right tell tell us
what you think of all this because You're, italian, Right.
Speaker 6 (08:44):
Oh, yeah one hundred percent both, sides.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
AND i you, know come from one hundred Percent italian
mom and her.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Parents and was this upsetting to The italian community in your?
Opinion it?
Speaker 6 (08:57):
Was and part of the reason that MAYBE i heard
one of the colors saying The italians weren't involved as,
much it was simply because it was done so. QUICKLY
i got a call actually at about two to three
in the morning Of july, first saying it's coming down
in an, hour and literally jumped down there with my,
(09:19):
husband called some, people, texted some people BECAUSE i knew
we were on alert it was going to come. Down
but we were there and kind of was shocked to
see how intense the project. Was and you, know they
were beautiful in taking it. DOWN i, mean there's both
sides to every, story and they were. Careful nobody was
slamming it.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Around where's the statue now.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
OR i know where it? Is i'm not permitted to actually,
say because we want to protect, it but it is
in a city. Garage let's just say that laying down
on a.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Blanket so it was my understanding that there was a
meeting yesterday With pete people ready to voice their concerns
about where they think the statue can go back. Up
and it was originally placed in this location, downtown but
they don't want it there, anymore so it's going to
be moved somewhere.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Else is that?
Speaker 6 (10:13):
Right so here's what's really going on the the there
was a group the two million dollars was given from
The Mellon foundation to a city derivative to see where
we should have The Columbus christopher's, statue where it should
(10:33):
be if it should. Return that was the study for
the past two.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Years we're back up for a.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Second did you say they spent two million dollars on this.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
Study it was given from The Mellon foundation In. Philadelphia
let's get that. Clear it was not from the city.
Money so they are doing this across the. Country it's
called a lot of. Money, yeah it was called The monument.
Foundations that is going on in, many many, cities not Just.
Columbus we won two million, dollars that's what was going.
ON i have been on the, Committee Christopher Columbus Statue
(11:04):
committee along with Another, italian a local, Attorney Jamie, cisto
from twenty to. Twenty we are the Two. Italians there
were other individuals that were on this. Committee Native, Americans, Blacks, Orientals,
chinese just everyone that you can think of was on this.
Committee it started out very. Large it started to kind
(11:27):
of AND i wouldn't say, disintegrate but let's face, it
The italians were the one that. Stayed The Native americans,
stayed and The African americans we stayed on all this.
Time that's what was kind of cool about it in.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Respect, yeah it was a very diverse.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
Group and with The Melon foundation, money what they did
was they put an all call bulletin out to, say
who would like to work on this? Project many people,
applied a wonderful. Committee i'd have to Say Designing local
was a great group of. People we have variant, perspectives
but they were marvelous and what they've done and the
(12:03):
execution of it is a beautiful. Job you can't say
anything about. That, now let's go back to the very
first meeting with this group and the city guiding. It
And i'm going to tell you the very first statement
out of the box for this evening in a Cold
January february, night opening. Statement, Ready just to be, clear
(12:25):
And i'm paraphrasing, here The Cole Aristopher columbus statue will
never be returned To City hall. Campus, okay you have
a room full Of. Italians you have a room full
of every ethnicity and lovers Of. Columbus your Classic columbus.
Sites they are in The Columbus Municipal library, downtown The
(12:45):
Columbus Public. Library and that statement is. Hit what do
you think the room thought if you would have seen the,
eyes the darting The. Italians one person stood up asked
the question like did you really say what you? Said
that gentleman wants. Down he goes that's. It it's all,
over gang and he walked. Out so there was your first.
Moment and The italians were like kind of. Speechless but
(13:08):
we went through these cafes all and the cafe means
that you were actually talking with individual. Communities and this
went on for a. Year they were wonderful until after a.
While The italians were, there but we. Weren't so that
is something that we would.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
See it.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
Blossomed The Native americans had, there had a beautiful day
in a garden and they talked about various things that
The African americans had their. Day The italians had a
day BECAUSE i went to them and had a lunche
and complained Like i'm not when is our day? Coming?
Oh well, Yes but they had these invitations out to
(13:49):
everybody in the city for everyone else's with The. Italians we, said,
okay we'll do something at The Ohio History. Connection please
invite who you'd like and make sure It's. Italian what
about the invitation to the. City that's not really going
to happen on this.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
One we had.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
It it was very small and went, back what's going on?
Here they, said all, right well pick a. Place so
we picked An italian, location and we had again we
were asked to bring in all The italians we. Could
we probably had forty or fifty that, came but it
was not again published to the. Public that is the
biggest dissension in this entire. Movement everyone got there say
(14:32):
publicly The italians Were so what quarantines.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Is. Disappointing And i'm and you, KNOW i, Mean i'm Half,
italian you're one hundred. Percent italians can make noise if
they want to and.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
When they're given a. Chance but it doesn't even sound.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Like they were given much of an opportunity.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Here we're running out of, Time.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Londa but the bottom line is it is too bad
that city hall doesn't want it.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Back so where will it end? Up what do you?
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Think and when is there a timeline of when they
can put the statue back?
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Up there's no timeline and there's no. Money the money
has to be given from the. City the plan that
they have is. Beautiful it's a beautiful. Park it's a
five acre. Park But i'm going to tell you, This
Christopher columbus is, positioned but he is in a place
where quote, unquote if you don't want to see, him
you don't have to he is not. Prominent AND i
(15:24):
said to, them, look if we're talking about sister, cities
And Jamie sisto said this, also why don't we have
something from all the sister. Cities let's turn it into
a park like this as. Well and they were, like,
maybe But christopher will be, first and he's not in
a beautiful. Location what they did was. Beautiful we talked
(15:45):
about different things design, wise are architecturally for this, statue
but he's not where The italians would want. It and
that is the sorrowful even when it comes. Back that's
a sorrowful part of.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
This, yeah it's kind of a slap in your. Face,
really would you want it one other thing that we
got to get a? Break would you want it back
at City? Hall is that where you think?
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Gette?
Speaker 6 (16:07):
YEAH i mean that you know that that is are they?
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Saying are they saying why they it will absolutely not
go back? There did they give you a reason for?
Speaker 6 (16:14):
It because it's? OFFENSIVE i mean they're coming the, offensive
but they're not letting The columbus sites who love it
and it Represents columbus to. Them let's start about. That
if we take it all the way and the history
Of columbus has still never been laid out. Properly there's
so many books that were not, read and we're not. Studied,
Remember Christopher columbus Was, italian, Right, okay he was hired
(16:38):
by The. Spaniards all of the people on his ship
were released as the conquistadors were released from prison In.
Spain so that's who he had on his. Stretch let's
not forget. That let's not also forget that these men
on this ship didn't he wasn't, royalty he wasn't he Was,
catholic he wasn't, royalty and he Wasn't. Spanish do you
(16:59):
think they're going to lift to? Him, well those things
are not. Told people are not understanding the whole, story
and that's the sorrowful part of This.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Landa you are fired.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Up we're going to have you, back but you keep
us updated on if and when they ever decide to
put this Beautiful Christopher columbus statue back. Up we want
to know about, It, landa thanks for joining. Us when
we come, back we are going to talk about school.
Levees are you sick and tired of taxpayers continuing to
face these?
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Levees do you vote for?
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Them do you vote against them because there's a main
one coming up in the city Of. Westerville what do
you think about. It we're going to talk about that.
Next you're listening To roll right here on six'. Ten
