Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's your Metallica with fuel on see one on one
REX in the morning. You know what I think about Metallica.
I always think about Angela Reyes. How Angela Johnson Reyes.
Is it weird for you to have three names now
that you're married and have a baby and everything.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I know? Listen. I was Angela Johnson for so many years,
like branded in my stand up comedy. Then I got
married and I was like, I don't want to change.
I don't want to add my name, and so I
was married for ten years before I finally added my
husband's last name and started using Reyes. And the crazy
(00:39):
thing about that is I grew up Mexican American with
the last name Johnson, and I always wanted a Spanish
last name, Like I always wish that I had like
the last name like Rodriguez or Gonzalez or something. But
I was Johnson. And then I get married to a
Spanish last name, and you would think I would be like, yay,
(01:00):
I'm going to use this immediately. Na I waited, like
ten years. I'm already brand Angela Johnson.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Forget it was that like a thing that did y'all have,
like a was it was? It jokey, jokey the whole time.
Or was it kind of like I could tell I'm
hurting him.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, it was. Actually it was really just like all
business moves. Like we knew I was branded Angela Johnson.
People do me as Angela Johnson. Yeah, And I was like,
I don't have a reason to like confuse people while
I'm just touring. And the real thing was, I said,
you know, I'm going to wait until I have like
a big TV show or some big kind of announcement,
(01:39):
then I'll add the name to like make it worth it.
It turns out it took me ten years to book
something real big that I needed my name, and that
was my book. I came out with the book and
I was like, all right, well I'm going to add
Johnson Reyes to it, and and that was my book.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
How's that? Now? The book is selling huge, right, I
mean it's they did like hard back in paper now,
I mean you can get it pretty much everywhere, like
on Amazon. I was reading a little bit some of
the stuff you've done. I mean we've talked, you know,
plenty of times. Last time we talked, we talked extensively
about the fact that you you had just had your baby,
I mean you would it was like brand new baby stuff.
(02:17):
You were still like, ah, what do I do now?
I mean, do you still have those moments or has
everything gotten really easy now?
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Oh? Nothing's ever easy? No kidding me, no, way no.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
When it comes to a baby.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
And constantly the second you learn her, she changes, you
know what I mean. And it's like, Okay, we're about
to start potty training. I'm so nervous about that, and
it's just it's happening so fast, and like, I want
to keep you in papers forever. And you would think like, oh,
who wants to be changing diapers forever?
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Me?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I do? I want to change diapers forever. I don't
want to do partty training. I'm scared.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
See, my girlfriend's daughter had a baby about what's maybe eight,
so I'm so connected eight like eight months ago something.
And so when the babies here, I've had to install
that big plastic swing that everybody gets, you know, the
one that you hang off your pergola or whatnot. So
we've done that, but the playpin when they come over
(03:13):
has gotten bigger and bigger. Like what moms have to
travel with is absolutely crazy. The amount of stuff that
you have to take with you just to go from
one house to another. I mean they pack the car
like Tetris when when the baby's coming over. So you
(03:33):
you're totally familiar with that. And and of course you
know all the toys. I love them, Like I'm like,
where was this stuff when I was a kid. I'm
playing with this like baby Einstein aquarium thing where everything moves.
Do you have like the dancing daisy? You can say
stuff to it and it says it back.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Oh, that's my daughter's best friend, really, and it's her
best friend. She loves that thing. It's a can't imagine
lugging around all that stuff all across the country. Because
that's what we're doing. We jump on a bus and
we got her playpin, all her toys, all her books,
and we just go all across the country with all
(04:12):
our stuff.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Well that's great. I mean I couldn't imagine, you know,
you being a mom and not being with your baby.
Like hey, everybody, I'm on tour. Baby's back in you know,
babies back in Nashville, Like here I am in Texas.
I mean, that's really cool.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
It would be too hard for I couldn't do it.
I know, there's I think about, like military moms who leave,
just like military dads leave. I couldn't imagine, Like that's
so hard and all respect to them, because I couldn't
do it. I have a rule for me personally, and
I don't leave my daughter for more than three days.
If I have a work trip that's more than three days,
(04:50):
then she comes with me. Yeah, But other than that,
I couldn't do it. It's too hard.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Now everybody already knows who Angela Johnson Reyes is, And
do you still find yourself going no? On YouTube? Look
me up? And then people come back to you like
are there people who don't know who you are? And
then you tell them about like the nail salon bit
and they go, oh my god, I've been jogging with
my friends for years about this thing.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
One if I meet somebody, like on an airplane or wherever,
and the conversation always comes up, oh you know what
do you do? Yeah? Cool things? And depending on how
long I want to be in this conversation, is how
I answer that question. Like I could keep it real
basic and be like, oh, I'm in the entertainment industry
and leave it like that. And other times if I
feel like talking and be like, oh, I'm a comedian,
(05:38):
because the second I say I'm a comedian, all the
questions are going to come a comedian, Oh have I
seen any of your work? And they'll not know who
I am. And then the second I name the nail salon,
they go, oh, my gosh, I used to watch that.
Blah blah blah blah blah. I've seen you da da
da da da. So it's funny how like you'll be
(06:00):
staring at me, talking to me for a whole conversation
not know who I am. In the second I say, oh,
the nail slaan, they go, oh, oh my goodness, and
I know exactly who you are.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Brilliant. That's got to feel fantastic, though. I mean it's
like I'm making a living doing something like this and
now I have, like, what a bajillion sold out I
was looking at the numbers on your on your shows,
like one hundred plus of shows sold out for your
theater tour. I mean, this has got to be a
huge stream for you. You're going to be here, of course, Saturday,
August twenty third, American Bank Center at the Selena Auditorium.
(06:33):
It's Angela Johnson Reyes, Can you hang on for me
for just a sec. Yeah, all right, there's your Bad
Wolves and Zombie on Sea one on one REX in
the morning talking to Angela Johnson Reyes. How are you
this morning?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Doing well? Thank you so much. Man.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
You're going to be here on Saturday, August twenty third
at seven pm. You can get your tickets for Angela
Johnson Reyes American Bank Center Arena. You've been to Corpus
several times. This is about like what once every year
and a half or so, or is it?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah? Yeah, and people maybe every two years.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
And I see people they post about you NonStop on
Facebook and they and they still have like, uh, you know,
their favorite comedy bits that they get on YouTube of
yours that they that they still share. I just recently
saw one being passed around from Say I Won't. Is
this your your latest stand up comedy special?
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, my most recent hour specials called Say I Won't.
It's on YouTube. We filmed it in Nashville at the
Ryman Auditorium, and uh, that that's my special where I'm
talking about beat a fish out of Water, a California
girl moving to the South, and all the things that
I had to learn living in the South from you know,
very simple ordering an iced tea automatically comes with three
pounds of sugar in it. And you know they call
(07:48):
it sweet tea. I call it diabete. Just had to
learn a lot. That's that special Say I Want? And
now I'm working on my new hour coming with a
family reunion tour and this is going to be the
new hour that I tape at the top of next year.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
That is really cool. The specials called say I Won't
with more than five million views and growing, Tell me briefly,
I know you got to go. You got other interviews
and stuff. Tell me about the book real quick here
so people know where to get it and what it's about.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
You can get my book on Amazon on Audible. You
can listen to me read the book to you and
my own voice. And it's the story of my life.
It's called who Do I Think I Am? Stories of
Torola wishes and Caviar dreams, and it's from childhood all
the way to how I got to where I am
today and some of the things that I've been through
in my childhood to crazy stories of when I got
(08:37):
to Hollywood, going to Michael Jackson's house, like just wild stuff,
and I just share it all with people in my book.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Was actually reading the audiobook? Was that harder than you
thought it would be? Or you just like, oh, I
read a book, and then once you start doing it,
you're like, I have to pronunciate everything.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
I mean, it's so hard. It's not only just pronunciate,
but like if your mouth is made mouth noises, you know,
and you're like, you got to drink more water. You
got to watch what you eat on the days that
you record, like, don't eat anything too salty. That's gonna
make your mouth dry, because then your mouth makes noises
that give recorded. It's just a whole thing.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
I always tell people it's a lot harder. I've had
friends go, oh, you should do audio books, and I'm like, no,
I've got a couple of friends that do that, and
all I hear are their complaints about having to go
and google words that they don't know how to say,
and I'm like, no, I'm good. I got other things
I want to do today besides a recorded audiobook. But
you know, doing it yourself, you would think that that
would be super simple, but I didn't think about, like, hey,
(09:38):
your earrings are making noise you know.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yeah wow.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Angela Johnson Rays Saturday, August twenty third. Grab your tickets
for the American Bank Center Selena Auditorium. I'm sure if
it's not selling out already, it's going to. You're always
fun to have on the show, so thank you so
much for giving me a shout.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Thank you, thanks for having me.
