Speaker 1 (00:00):
Shine Down Attention, Attention and see one a one Rex
in the morning.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Oh god, it must have been two months ago. I
was thumbing through TikTok and I came across shindowns TikTok
and they were talking about, you know, things that were
going on in their life and.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Started talking about hot sauce.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
And I left a comment and I was like, hey, man,
call me up Rex from KNCN and Corpus Christy. I
want to talk about hot sauce. And look, it actually happened.
I've got Barry Kirch, drummer for Shine Down with me
right now. Good morning, buddy.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Uh yeah, it's a good morning. I'm happy to be here.
I hadn't finished my coffee, but.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, there's nothing like having to do a radio thing
at like seven am.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Is this your normal wake up time?
Speaker 3 (00:50):
You know? I start getting into this time schedule when
i'm home, and I am home right now because my
family gets up early. But I'll be honest with you,
after twenty years of touring, I am not a morning person.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, I gotta tell you, I've been doing this for
thirty five years and I'm still not a mourning person.
I'm actually looking out my back window right now at
our rooster and I'm not kidding and forty hens and
I'm wondering which one we'll be wearing the mango Hobanaro sauce.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
You guys, have you guys? Have you guys have your
own sauces?
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Now, when I say you guys, you're really the one
responsible for I guess what coming up with the idea.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
You're like the band cook.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
How did this whole thing come to fruition where you
decided it's time to release various hot sauces out to
the rock and roll community.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
How did this thing go down?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, It's kind of always been a pipe dream of mine.
I've had a love affair with hot sauces ever since
I was a kid. I've collected them, and even now,
half my fridge is full of hot sauces. And I
grow my own peppers and I make my own hot
sauces at home and a torch. The company we partnered with,
they had approached the label saying, hey, any of your
artists want to collab on a hot sauce? And we
got the email and I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm your guy,
(02:07):
Let's do this really? And yeah, it was just one
of those lucky things where I've always thought about it
and it just fell on my lap. You know. I
guess the universe was thinking of me.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
So and you said, you're together with you're a gardener,
so you you like just grow your own stuff. And
did you were you just kind of working on your
own specialty sauces before or did or were sauces? I
mean you said you had a love of sauces. Did
did you already have some things in mind when you
were approach You're like, ah, I know the perfect combination of.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
This, this and this that nobody's got.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
I wouldn't say that nobody's gone. I mean, there's only
so much you can do with I mean, I guess
you could do a lot with hot peppers, but I
wanted to be palatable and you know, not to blow
your head off. I think for me it was more
just a hobbyist thing and I love to you know,
you get a bushel of peppers at the end of
a pepper season. That's a lot of stuff and you
can only put it in food so much, so you
end up either you know, making a hot sauce out
of it or pickling. And what I do is always
(03:03):
make hot sauce and pickles for the Christmas season for
my family. That's what I do. I give them, you know,
fresh products that I grew out of my own garden
and it brings me joy. So that's kind of how
it started. And then when I got with vid Over
torch Bear, we just started talking about flavor profiles. I
like this, no, I like this, we like this, I
like this. And it took us about five months of
testing and tasting and changing profiles and oh, this one
(03:26):
needs a little more vinegar, this one needs a little
bit more thick, and these need you know, all these
different things, maybe some more garlic. And we came up
with the three that I'm very happy and very proud of,
and they are as well. So it was definitely a
labor love. The last thing I wanted to do was
put shine Down's name on just some generic sauce as
a novelty. I wanted actual, real stuff.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Man, that's really cool that you were able to sort
of explore this, because I'm sure it's really boring being
the drummer for Shining Down, Like you don't have enough
going on.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Yeah, I'm not busy enough. Let me torture myself with
a whole nother project.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
That's really cool eating that you've got the attention attention
Mango Abonaro sauce, and what are the other sauces?
Speaker 3 (04:09):
So we have the attention attention Mango Hoban here. That's
the latest one that just got released. Before that, we
released the Devour Pineapple Jerk sauce, and we released the
first one that we released was the symptom to pull
a garlic sauce.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
You have to like do your own jingles for it.
A symptom to pultake garlic.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, we're not going to do that. I mean, so
one accuses of being sellouts already. I'm not doing that.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
That's cool that.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
You you decided to do the hot sauce thing, because
it just seems like everybody's doing an alcoholic beverage.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
So it's good.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
It's I think it's I think it's great that you
guys went with this, you know, you know, and.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
I would do a beer or something, but I'm the
only one in the band that even drinks beer. The
rest of the guys are sober, so it kind of
be it would feel off to do that, like, hey,
here's our new whiskey. When nobody in the band drinks whiskey. Yeah,
it's just not something we would do.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Well, it's cool, you see, you stay true to your
yourself and the whole thing. And this isn't just you know,
to line your pockets. You guys are giving quite a
bit of the proceeds away too.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Can you tell me who it's going to?
Speaker 1 (05:10):
And I was reading a little bit right here, but
it's you know, people know I'm people know I'm reading.
So rather have you have you explained how this works?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah? We found a charity called Musicians on Call and
it's a it's an organization that basically provides music in
hospitals for the patients, their families, the doctors, the nurses,
everybody in the hospital type situation because music can be
healing and shine down. Over the years, you know, we've
been lucky enough to be around for a while and
(05:40):
I've had many experiences of hey, your music got me
through this, or we played this song at our wedding,
or hey we played this song at our funeral and
it meant a lot to us, all those different things,
and you realize how important music, our music, other music
can be to people in stressful situations and you know,
nobody wants to end up in the hospital, but it
happens in your families, and when you're there, it's scary,
(06:02):
and you know, there's lots of weird noises, and there's
lots lots of hustle and bustle, and it's stressful on
the doctors, it's stressful on the nurses. To when when
you can bring music in there and maybe hopefully give
some relief and some solace in tough times, we just
found that to be something really cool, So we wanted
to partner up with them and you know, help them
expand what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
That's really that's really cool. You mentioned funerals and weddings.
What what is the song that people tell you that
they have played at their at their wedding?
Speaker 2 (06:31):
What is like the number one.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
To number one would probably be I'll follow you.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Oh yeah. For some when you said funeral, I thought
it's got to be the Crow and the Butterfly.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
It's been done, yeah, simple Man, both weddings and funerals
for some reason.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Yeah, yeah, I've I've got a buddy of mine got
married and had simple Man and it was like, you know,
the dance with him and his mom but it's like
a really it's like that songs long?
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Was it like six minutes long or something? Right? And
then yeah, they were dancing and it was like.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Hey, somebody needs to fade out.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
They're getting tired over there doing the the sun and.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
That's what you needed. Good DJ that can say wait
to the next song, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (07:16):
So great? Where can where can people pick up the sauces? Where?
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Because I saw them on Amazon, am I allowed to
say that and the uh yeah, And.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
I mean wherever you get them, you get them. That's great.

you guys many times over the past thousand years at
Sea one on one, and y'all are just one of
those bands that you're easy to talk to. You know,
there's there's people you can go back to and you're like, Okay, cool,
(08:15):
let's sit down for this interview, and you're just like, ugh,
it's like pulling teeth. But it's great that you guys
are in a band that not only have so much success,
but you actually give while you're doing the interviews. They
sort of run themselves. So thanks for making, you know,
our job a lot easier and the music certainly is
a lot of fun to play over here at Sea
