(00:00):
Hello, Hello, Hi, it'sLeslie High. Hi. This is better
if we just go Okay, canwe just go and be on the air
together, we can go. I'mready ready to thank you. There we
go Rex in the morning on seeyou one on one. See Leslie.
I just don't want to prepare whenI talk to you. That's work,
(00:23):
that's work. I also, Ijust woke up, so you are more
prepared, you know, than meon every level. I'll tell you what
I did for show prep. Ipretty much stalked your Facebook page. That
was about it. You know.Oh wow, I'm honored. Yeah,
you're a very you're very successful.Do we say do we still say comedy
(00:44):
ann or what was that a thingthey did in the eighties? You know
what's weird? I haven't heard thatword comedy comedian They used to do that
instead of comedian. They were likecomedian. Can I think comedian is genuinely
just easier? Yeah? Yeah,I think probably because I'm old. I'm
going to be fifty seven in January. Oh yes, but you should feel
(01:11):
what age do you feel you shouldsee me? I'm smoking hot? You
know, well I can't confirm Iwell because this is audio, but you
just head over to my Stephen RexGabriel facebook page and you'll see the evidence
I should have stopped to you. Also, I have great genes. I
was raised by my mom, mygrandmother. My mom had like six sisters
(01:36):
and wow, so I was aroundwomen and I learned at an early age
to moisturize your skin. Ah,I'm so happy for you. I'm just
so happy you know the secret. But look the secret earlier on. Look,
I've only been talking on the radionow for thirty four years. At
one oh one, I did thisas a fluke. I came to town
(01:59):
to get chicks at the beach andhere, I am. I made a
freaking career out of it. Butwe need to talk about you. They
already know about me, is itokay? So it's Leslie lao am I
saying it right? It's lew likemeow like me. That's what I like
to tell people. That says heresays here that you're not currently in a
(02:23):
relationship, which I know is abunch of crap because I'm looking at you.
It on my Facebook. It saidit somewhere here in your Facebook or
on your Netflix thing that they say. It also said that you worked at
Netflix and I'm like, no,this is not the person that I talked
to. Oh that is true, that is true. Yeah, so you've
been doing comedy for how long? Now it's been seven years, and it's
(02:46):
weird because you know, with thepandemic, I feel like it's technically six.
But yeah, I started seven yearsago. Did you gain instant popularity
or was the or was that thatweird awkward struggle where you look back now
and you go, can't I saidthat, you know on stage those years
ago. I definitely did not gaininstant popularity. I think before this this
(03:07):
year has been like my favorite. But there's so many things happened to me
this year that I'm like, thisis hilarious. I can't believe like the
cool things that have gone on thisyear. Before I was just like in
I started in La. So Iwas in the shadows of La doing one
am open mics for four people. No one knew me, and that was
(03:30):
fine. I just was working onit. But I think this year I
kept meeting people that were giving theopportunities and I kept saying yes, And
now it's like here, I am, I get to do this interview.
You know, like people want totalk to me for some reason. But
yeah, and you know, socialmedia does help. I'm not going to
(03:52):
pretend it doesn't help accelerate things. But it's different these days with the internet.
Well its in the world, andthat can be a positive and a
negative because you know, if you'redoing something great that people love, perfect
and nine people hear about it immediately, if you do something bad, a
billion people try to cancel you.Yeah, you get pounced on quickly.
(04:15):
So that's sort of the bad thingabout social media. But you are doing
a Netflix multi comics stand up specialseries, it's called Verified Stand Up.
Tell me about that. Yes,So that is a special that is currently
out on Netflix as we speak,so for those who have it, you
can go watch it dabble in it. But Netflix is known for these amazing
(04:39):
hour long specials with these like amazingcomics, so they're just trying a new
format. So this is ten comicsdoing ten minute sets and it's split.
It's like, I don't know ifyou go to a lot of comedy shows,
but it's like, I think itreplicates a night out at your local
club where you see like ten comicsin a row just doing short sets working
(04:59):
on stuff, and it's like theybooked a really hot lineup. Like the
lineup, it's likely that you don'tknow all of these names, like they're
up and coming. But if youwatch it, then like to discover your
new favorite comic. That's the vibe. It's like, and it's it's an
easy watch. It's like ten funnypeople right in a row. It's it's
I mean, I'm biased, butit's great. That's really cool. Hang
(05:23):
on for me for two seconds. Here, we'll be right back on Sea
one on one with Leslie Meow. There's Disturbed and Stupefy on Sea one on
one. Leslie's favorite song, Right, Leslie, my top my top five,
Play me some disturbed ex Gabriel,do it for me now? Now
(05:44):
you were I'm seeing you were selectedto be the new face of comedy at
Montreal's prestigious just for lat Do theysend me this stuff in case I don't
have something to talk about with you, because I have, Just like I
said, I have a laundry listof awesome things that you've done, which
is really cool. I mean,you've got a resume already that's a mile
and a half long and a bunchof show dates. But yeah, I
(06:08):
send that to men before a date, I go read this, get impressed,
get intimidated, and get ready. Are you in a relationship right now?
I just gotta I keep talking abouthim like he's a new car.
I just got a new boyfriend. So he still has that new boyfriend smell
yeah, yeah, and he's awesomethat it's new. Yeah. And so
(06:30):
is there any suspicion there because you'redoing comedy and there's lots of cute boys,
and you're out of town, andyou know, are y'all doing a
lot of FaceTime kind of stuff whereyou call him and say FaceTime me,
so I know you're not at atopless bar. We FaceTime all the time,
even when we're both in La Okay, that's how kind of dorky we
are. We live five minutes fromeach other, but we FaceTime five times
(06:54):
a day. But I know travelingis going to be hard. Yeah,
Like I'm going to tour a lotsoon that year. But truly, I
think traveling and working sounds glamorous, but it's really not. Like I'm in
the hotel a lot. I lovebeing at hotel by myself. I love
a little coffee shop. Yeah, you know, you're out at the club
(07:15):
but I'm also like in the greenroom or on stage or at my hotel.
So it's you know, to somepeople that sounds glamorous, but it's
definitely not like a rock star. It's really not good because you're sitting there
a lot of time in the greenwood. You're going, Okay, this guy's
going thirty six minutes and I'm justgonna sit here. Oh and then and
(07:36):
then you get to hear that jokethat they're ending with. Okay, cool,
Now I got to perk up andgo do my thing. I mean,
it's it's not it's a lot ofwaiting when you're when when you're a
stand up comedian, it's a lotof it's a lot of waiting for the
other band to finish before I cango out and play my music. Yeah,
it's a lot of you know,it's a lot of being on standby,
Yeah, and losing laundry and thingsthat are important to you when you
(08:01):
travel. It's like I could askyou about your collection of phone chargers.
I always have with me a phonecharger, like it's wallet, keys,
phone phone charger. Got to haveyour stuff. Yeah, I wear it
around my neck like a necklace. Now you've done some comedy shows that include
all women. I mean, Imean, I guess there's people out there
(08:24):
that love seeing female comics. Wasthat done just sort of say hey,
we're over here being really funny too, I promise, I guess, Meaning
like there are shows I've done inLA that showcase all women there. I
mean, there's so many shows inLA, and there's so many comics in
(08:45):
LA, so I think a lotof shows and producers try to make a
show that stands out like it hasa gimmick, Like I did a show
recently where the audience will put theirsecret in a bucket, like their deepest,
darkest darkest secret. What a greatidea that it's a great idea.
There's a comic Steve Cherry that runsit in LA and it's just like a
(09:05):
fun and it's a gimmick but it'sfun. But I mean, I bet
you read some quicy stuff from upthere. It's the best. So every
comic will reach into the bucket ofsecrets and pull out a secret and we'll
just riff on it and everyone islike laughing because it's like these bizarre things,
like I cannot say on the radio, like bizarre things and the end
(09:28):
the If the audience member wants toadmit and claim that that was their secret,
then we'll buy their tap. Wow, the tab is on the club.
So do you have a lot ofpeople that do that or there's some
that just go u uh, I'msitting right next to her. I've done
the show once and the person admittedit. Actually, two people came up
(09:48):
really to admit their secret, andit was amazing because everyone was like it
was liberating. They're like, youknow what, live your truth be out
in the like, so that wasfun. Anyways, I'm ambling, but
I've ten women line up shows becauseI think it does help in LA to
have a slight kind of what's thehook of your show? What makes the
(10:11):
show different than every other show?Just you know, five comics. So
there's some really good all women showswhere there's like diversity in that line up
alone, but they're all women. There's always like some some hook to the
show that makes it extra special.Well, tell me when we can.
Can we watch the Netflix comedy standup series Verified Stand Up Now that you're
(10:31):
on? Can we watch that now? It is out now? It is
on Netflix right now. If youdon't want to watch it while you're cleaning,
you know, on the toilet, which I know you can go watch
content on you know, it's it'sout now. It's like a quick,
really fun, easy watch. Butit's available. And we can find you,
of course on like Facebook and TikTok, and you're on YouTube. You're
(10:54):
all over the place because your videosyou have are growing. Yes see,
you have found me on Facebook andI'm on the so yeah, if you
search me, I'm on all thosethings. And it's Leslie. It's Leslie
pronounced like meo lao and the lastname is l I a oh. If
(11:15):
you want to Google her or findher on social media, or you'll find
her right there on Netflix. Thankyou so much. You've been the biggest
joy ever this morning. Thanks forthank you so much hanging out with me
much, so much. All right, we'll talk to you too. Thank
you so much. Thank you somuch.
