(00:00):
Banks in the morning on see oneoh one, A little bit of hell

(00:03):
you and I don't care anymore.Well, here's a bunch of people who
care a whole lot. I've gotBran Yoder on the phone with me right
now. We're talking about the twentytwenty three Battling Barbecue Championship Cookoff. Am
I am? I? Is thatthe correct title? That would be it?
That would be it? That's correct? Yess ser man. This is

(00:23):
a huge deal and you guys arehelping kids that are battling cancer. From
what I've been reading right here onthe on the website, what do you
have to do to enter? First? You need to be somebody that doesn't
ruin a whole lot of meat oris it necessary to ruin meat on your
way to greatness? Yeah, wellsometimes you gotta ruin a little bit.
But no, I mean basically,I mean, even though it's a state

(00:46):
championship, anyone can compete and stillwin, you know, money and prizes
and all that stuff. Basically,as far as the entry, basically go
to our website and register your teamto enter. It takes about three minutes
and as long as you do itbefore or Friday afternoon, you're good to
go. And you guys made itsuper simple too, because I just I
just googled battling barbecue and it comesright up right there. It gives you

(01:10):
all the details about the the theentry and the cookoff being held an ingle
side over at Simmons Park. Youget a map of the park, all
the specifics on who can be onyour team, how many you guys have
this down to how much space thatyou have to barbecue in, what you
can use to barbecue, what youcan actually use to fuel your fire and

(01:32):
to start your fire, and generatorsand all kinds of I mean, you
guys covered everything on this. There'sreally no no brisket was left unturned when
it came to details on this thing. I feel like I learned a lot
just by checking out the page.I was also taken back when I when
I looked at the children that havebeen sponsored throughout the years, I mean,

(01:57):
this whole thing. How do youguys help help kids that are battling
cancer? Explain that aspect of itto me. Uh. The basis is
is every year we have an openenrollment. Basically, anyone that has a
child under the age of eighteen yearsold and they're in within our area.
I guess you say Tri County Iriper se. Yeah, we take applications.

(02:17):
So what we do is we'll raisemoney with you know, with the
event, you know, whether itbe money from beer sales, vendor sales,
you know, competition itself, cornholes, you know, anything that that
we get. We give one hundredpercent to these families that that we sponsor
every year, and that money doesn'treally always just go to their insurance because

(02:38):
a lot of people, Man,when you talk to these families, a
lot of them say, man,you know, it's real hard because my
wife had to quit work. Wehave she has to go to Houston every
so often. We have to stayweak or two you know, the kids
week, and there's a all kindsof things that happen. So it's it's
just a it's a pitfall for thesepoor families. And there are organizations that
help out with rooming and board, but in reality, we try to give

(02:59):
them a a financial buffer tour. They can relax a little bit, enjoy
their time. They don't have tobe just you know, frantic and just
losing their mind. They can actuallykind of sit back and enjoy some of
their time. I've been worrying aboutdang bills. You know, that's the
worst part about the whole thing. It is stifling the fact that if you
have a child that ends up battlingcancer, it can financially ruin you.

(03:24):
And that is that's just the worstthing, well, the second worst thing
I can think about when if youif you go through any kind of battle
like this, anybody that's ever seena medical bill that that's over three hundred
thousand dollars, I mean, ohyeah, it's unbelievable. I've got a

(03:45):
one of my oldest sister was inan accident when when I was a kid,
and I remember my dad actually showingme a bill that was over three
hundred thousand dollars and there were stillbills coming in and this wasn't cancer.
This was a terrible accident. Butyou get it is absolutely shocking what happens
to families because nobody's prepared for thistype of a diagnosis. So it's wonderful

(04:09):
that you guys are helping out.Got that right, And you've got a
sponsored child this year. Yeah,So this year's sponsored child, that's Soraya
Hernandez from Corpus Christ. She's twoyears old. And is diagnosed in July
with leukemia. Why God, buther family is high spirited. You know,

(04:30):
she's just now going through chemo Ithink starting this week, but you
know, and they're going to tryto make the event. If not,
they're sending family to the event tojust like represent them. But that's not
even part of it. It's youknow, they know that people are behind
them and that it gives that gratefulfeeling and though they can pretty soon after
the events over they can kind ofsit back, relax and just have they
enjoyed, you know, enjoy thepeople you know that has their back,

(04:53):
the community. And the best partis, you know they can actually take
this money and go, hey,you know what, maybe you know,
when she gets a little bit better, maybe we can go to Slitperbum.
Can we do that? Yeah,it's your money, man. If you
want to use that money to goit on a little nice little mini vacation
through all this mannasure going through,do it. I encourage that. I
encourage that, I really do.I can't. I can't imagine having a

(05:15):
two year old going through chemotherapy. That's just I can't either. How on
earth have you ever had anyone inyour family that battled cancer. I cannot
say that I have personally. Andthat's another hard thing is, you know,
I talk to these families, Iget all the applications. I speak
with these families. Yeah, andthey really put it down in like a

(05:36):
real easy to understand, heartfelt way. It really gets me going every year.
Sometimes I'm just like, man, this is a lot. Do I
really want to keep doing this? And when I get that call, I'm
like, oh, I'm all in, man, And I have all these
friends that become board members that gotmy back, and they have helped me
make this into a really big thing. And altogether we can keep doing this

(05:57):
year after year. We try tohave more than one or two sponsored children.
We hope to hopefully, you know, have three at one time if
we can financially. Yeah, that'sour goal, and we're going to keep
going. I also saw right hereon the page where you can donate to
the cause. And anybody that's everhad that phone call or dealt with the
reality of cancer. When I wasa kid, my mom uh had breast
cancer and luckily she beat it,and a few years back my father actually

(06:21):
died from esophageal cancer, and itjust you look at that and you just
go, oh, I I wouldn'twish that on my worst enemy. It
is absolutely the it's a it's awhole different type of fear that gets unlocked
in you. You're like, wow, I have no idea, but it's
nice right through. And on thewebsite, like I said, you can

(06:42):
donate to the cause too, ifyou want to make a donation. They
make it super simple, even ifyou can't get out there and barbecue.
That's right, that's right. Youknow, we we have we have we
sell raffle or we have a rafflelist that we are doing raffles online to
let me be there to win youwin the raffle. We call you,
hey, come pick up. We'vegot amazing words, I mean for raffles.
Man, it's it's We've had alot of companies come up and hey,

(07:03):
reverse smoker, Hey we got youknow this, We've got a duck
hunt. You know, all theseall these sponsors of ours are just being
they help they help us tremensely. It's not just the people, it's also
the companies that help us do itand their owners and it's just amazing have
all this all this come together andmake this happen. Well, the clock
is ticking, so if you wantto enter your team, time to do

(07:24):
that is now, because it's comingup on October the twenty first in Ingles
side. That's right, very that'swhat I mentioned. We also have,
you know, cornhole competition starts ateleven a m whole things for the public.
We've got professional wrestling, we've gotbands, we've got vendors, we've
got beer cells, got kid activitiesof course, the barbecue competition. You
know. All I thing we don'thave is karaoke because god, I don't

(07:46):
think I can handle that. Youknow, that's a little bit too much
for me. We don't want to. I even noticed you guys. So
when you announced teams, the teamactually gets their own walk on music.
Oh yeah, oh yeah. That'sgot to be a lot of fun right
there. There's a lot of peoplethat like that ac DC thunderstruck. I'll
tell you that much. See,I'd go in a completely different direction.

(08:07):
I end up having like you know, Katie Perry roar, so you will
you won't not here if you angerto hear that here? Nah is so
great man, Well, I willdefinitely share this on my Steven Rex Gabriel
Facebook page. It's already shared atSea one to one dot com, or
you can just google Battle in Barbecue. Just go to www dot battle in

(08:31):
Barbecue dot org and get all thedetails there. Man, thank you so
much for joining me this morning andand and spreading the words so we can
help out these families that have thesekids that are suffering. Yes, sir,
I really appreciate you having this onagain, and we'll doing it,
and hopefully we'll do it again nextyear. We'll have the same conversation with
hopefully a little bit more upbeat andmaybe have some maybe two or three this

(08:54):
time, you know, and alittle and a little more, a little
more I'll back it with Katy Perryor while we're actually it'll come. It'll
beef up the entire day. Iwas gonna say Miley Cyrus wrecking ball,
but then I shut down the entireradio station. Hey man, have a
