Speaker 1 (00:00):
Fox Sports fourteen fifty am our usual Tuesday night get together,
Jonathan Schaeffer here with Kim Coder Roeblisz off the top
of the hour, our special guest Josh Jone number ninety one.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Josh, how's it going, man?
Speaker 1 (00:14):
We've had a scrunch of games as of recent you
guys had a workout day today and what you've been
doing for the rest of the day getting ready for
the game tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah, it's good to be here, thanks for having me,
and not too much. I think, just kind of laying
back today. Think about six games and nine days, so
it's obviously a lot, and try to get your rest
when you can. So today's workout day, get home, try
and say a little bit active, but at the same
time just relax and let the body recover.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah, and you know, I feel like lately we've been
playing better when we have these scrunches of games. Actually
have a good stat Well, we have to play four
games in less than seven days or in seven days
or less. We're nine to two on the year. So
what's that kind of helped with us? You know, obviously
you'd say when you're feeling when you're on a hot streak,
you want the next game to come quickly. But what
(01:06):
has that helped us in this stretch of games to
you know, keep the body healthy, keep the workouts going,
but not doing too much to where we're too exhausted
for the next game.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I think one of our strengths is our ability and
our endurance to kind of push through stuff like this.
And we practice and train really hard as a group,
and we focus a lot on that because at the
end of the year, it's it is going to be
be a heavy, heavy load.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
And that's just kind of how it goes in this league.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
So we've prepared early on in the year to be
really good throughout stretches like this. And I think that's
that's one of the things that we've set ourselves up
for us having success and in a lot of games
in a short period of time, which it becomes a huge,
huge benefit of times like this right now. And you
when you play a lot of games in a little
bit of time. So you got a credit credit Parker
(01:53):
and the coaching staff for preparing us for for for
moments like this. And I think we have we have
confidence and our abilities when we when we come to
the rank and play in these kind of moments because
we are ready and prepared for it.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
And I think we.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Got to give a lot of credit to to our goaltender,
Matthew Vilalte, who has started all of these games, and
it just he just looks like it doesn't phase him
at all out there, And every time you talk to
him or a coacher or one of his teammates, you
know he loves to play these games. But he's playing
his best stretch right now. Two games in a row
with a shutout. Just how big has that been for him?
(02:27):
Because you know, earlier this season the results weren't coming there,
The wins weren't coming there for him, and that's the
biggest thing for a goaltender. Now we're seeing it and
how is it big? How big has it been for
him in the locker room and just seeing him perform
out there for you guys, Yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Think the first thing is is he never changed his
mentality and and and we all knew this was going
to come at some point. I think he was a
little bit frustrated obviously with the results at the beginning
of the year and some of the balances that were
going in or there's end wall rims that were coming
in deflecting off than that that he could do nothing about.
So it was kind of a matter of time before
(03:04):
he he started putting up numbers like he did last year.
And there's not a guy in the room that's not
happy for him because of who he is and what
he means to this group. So I wish I could
tell you I'm shocked by what he's doing now, but
I'm not because I've seen it on a daily basis,
and I watched it all year last year, So I
think watching him roll right now is really fun and
(03:28):
I'm excited to see to see what he can do
in the next couple of games.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Here, Josh, I'm going to ask you a few kind
of silly logistical questions before I get into the silly
non logistical, non hockey questions, So just a heads up.
So lately, I feel like, and it probably happens all
the time, and it just hasn't caught my eye as
much as it has recently. I feel like there's been
just a lot of sticks and helmets and gloves and
(03:53):
everything on the ice. It's a totally hard sale. Is
what's exactly the process of when you lose your stick
and you're out there. If you're on D how do
you decide who's deciding? Okay, you're going to stay out
there as long as you possibly can. Just do what
you can do. Like, what does that look like from
your standpoint on the ice if something like that happens.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, I think it's It depends on where on the
ice it happens and who it happens to. If Maddie
V loses his stick, then the closest guy gives him,
gives him their stick, just so you can feel comfortable
in his stand still. Obviously a player sticks a little different,
but it allows him to feel comfortable. If a D
man loses a stick in the D zone, then a
(04:37):
forward supposed to give him their stick, and then that
forward fails in the middle and kind of and then
you kind of play like a penalty kill with with
a forward standing in the middle without a stick.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Okay, but I've been.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Todd that if you lose a stick, as a forward
or demon loses a stick and you give up your stick,
then to go to the bench and get a new one,
because you'll play that penalty kill for five seconds and
then you get a fresh body back with a stick,
which it's hard to defend without one, so you're basically
useless anyway. So it's one of those things where it
(05:10):
kind of depends on where on the ice and who
it is.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
That loses it.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
Okay, all right, that's also. That's super helpful. I appreciate that.
And then I was wondering, what is your pregame routine?
I get to see you a tiny bit before the games,
and it kind of know, like a teeny tiny part
of what you do. But it looks like you guys
are very like, very regimented and the things that you
do before the game. So what does it look like?
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, I'm one of the guys that is as laid
back as it can get before a game. Okay, whether
it starts in the afternoon, after after meetings, I'll come
home and hang out with my dog and.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Then I'll go, oh, that's right, you had a puppy
last year.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, go figure now.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
But I will hang out and then I'm living with
Big Doug and Greggy right now.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
So Curtis will make pregame.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Know he's he's quite the chef yet, so he'll make
us pre game meal and then well we'll come to
the rink a little bit earlier, get everything I need
to get done, and then the rest of the game
is we play. We play a couple of games and
then listen to music. So it's there's a lot of
guys that are are pretty dialed in, and like Sam
(06:20):
Loupkin will be.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
He'll be dialed in from about four o'clock on on.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
A game day basically, yeah, and he's pretty pretty laser focused.
Cam he bigs another one that'll stretch for a long time.
But I just like to enjoy it. It's it's to me,
the best part of playing hockey is game time, So
just enjoy that that process and everything leading.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Up to it.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
I definitely should not be playing soccer with you guys anymore.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Kim.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
You you don't know this story. So it was yesterday's game.
I'm going to interview Steve Pavin. Josh calls me over
to go. It's what's the game you guys call it?
Speaker 4 (06:57):
That called to touch or sewer all depending on that.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Okay, So, and I was explaining the rules a little
bit today by Parker Poor but so I was brought
in because you need a new guy to keep the
game going or something like that. The ball was kicked
to me, and I tried to do some cool backwards
kick or something and I completely fell in front of
everybody and fell on my side.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
I'm okay, I'm okay.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
The best part though, is you haven't seen it, but
it's probably happened the four or five guys before in
the exact happened to me last year, happened to it's
it's you had an awkward and awkward ball coming in
and it just it got the best of Johnny there.
But I mean, I don't know if I might be
calling you back in we haven't lost.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah, yeah, I know.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
I was ready for tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I think I got to
redeem myself, right, so I might just plug myself in
if possible. I think the best part was is like
I'm the one in the full suit, right and you
see a guy in a full suit completely wiping out.
But uh yeah, I played it off, but honestly, it
hurts so bad.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Like I was, I was hurting. I was hurting for
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
But wait, did you fall on the floor? Did you
fall onto something?
Speaker 2 (08:15):
I don't know what I fell on. It happened.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
I got up so quick, like I was, I was
not trying to be that guy who falls over and
just lays on the ground, because obviously I wanted to
make sure everyone knew I was okay. I wasn't, but
I got up as quick as possible to make nor wait.
Speaker 5 (08:30):
Playing a pre game was chaos yesterday, y'all were unhinged, Josh.
It was not okay, Like because I saw kyler Yamamoto
go flying into the pipe and drape. He took down
like I don't know how many stands of pipe and drape.
It was amazing, and he was fine. But there's no
way he was fine because it looked like he fell
on a coffee table.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Like it's intense. It's intense.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
Is there a winner at the end of it?
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, but when a new player joins, everyone is allowed
back into the game.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
That's why they That's why you called me, so were
you were you out?
Speaker 4 (09:05):
I was already eliminated, So that's why you asked. A
couple of the guys.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Were out, and they sent me on a mission to
find someone walking around to get them to do and
Johnny and Johnny played last time so we could ask
him again.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah, because I played the I think I played the
Saturday game.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
You got sewered by accident.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Yeah, that was fine because I had to go.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
And then the most recent time yesterday is when I
completely wiped out.
Speaker 5 (09:30):
Wait and who kicked it to you yesterday?
Speaker 1 (09:34):
I don't know, but they start targeting you when you
when you come in, especially me. I I'm not I
never played so why have played soccer before?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
But that was years ago, like a long time ago.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
I'm not good with the feet and the ball just
starts going to me and then I don't know. I
was trying to do something cool and it did.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Not work out.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
But uh yeah, but no, I appreciate you guys calling
me in and maybe we'll uh, we'll see about tomorrow
me joining you guys again, hopefully not falling over this time.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Yeah, Josh, what is your favorite thing about playing hockey?
And it seems like I think I know the answer
to this question. But is hockey fun or is it serious?
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Hockey's fun?
Speaker 3 (10:14):
I think that's my biggest thing, is just having a
good time and get an opportunity to play a game
at a high level with your best friends and the
whole process throughout that is just something that you have
to enjoy. And obviously scoring goals and that is really fun,
but at the same time, it's the process of getting
there with being on the bench and laughing and stuff
(10:37):
happens in the game where it's there are funny things
that go on, and if you take it too serious
and you don't think it's funny while you're playing, then
I think it's it honestly hurts you a little bit.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
Then we've got a group.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Now where where Kylie Yamamoto and I and a couple
other guys were kind of giving it to each other.
We're almost chirping each other more than the other teams
during games at this point, so it keeps it light
and I think it's part of the reason that we're
having success and having.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Fun right now.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Yeah, so you're on social sorry, Johnny, but I sung
on socials with with Leyton Moore and just Sporting Water straight.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Moorees is a part of that group. Ben McCartney's another
one who's in that group. Were just he's always given
it to people.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Maddy Volta's he's just straight troublemakers.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Yeah, the most unhinged player, yeah the team, and he's
in the net so it kind of makes it a
little bit a little bit more fun. To play the game,
because he'll come come to the bench and say the
most ridiculous things ever and then go right back into
the net and make it an unbelievable save and everyone
just laughs because it's like there's there's no way his
mindsets where it is and he just made that save.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
I Johnny, we need to mike Maddie up at some point,
like really soon, because when he was telling us that, like,
I don't know, Josh, if you we did an interview
with him and he told us that when he's out
on the ice and he's he's bored or just waiting
for something to happen, he starts reading the signs on
the dasher boards and like making little rhymes for himself.
And I can't even imagine what else is happening in
(12:07):
that brain during.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
The Yeah, I believe there's nothing good going on in
that brain. But the same time, he's pretty entertaining.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yes, yeah, and Josh, you know, I'm not gonna say
any names, but I've just heard from other organizations and
we've seen it on the news too, of like you know,
NHL locker rooms and maybe some American League locker rooms too,
of just you know, like you said, hockey is a
fun sport and we should have fun playing it, and
you know, we have our serious moments sometimes we want
to win games. But I think a lot of teams
and maybe you know, just locker rooms, the coaches are
(12:39):
maybe too hard on the players and they guys say like, well,
now I'm not even having fun playing this sport anymore,
and that's resulting in losses. And I think for us
it's a completely different story. How important is it to
just have maybe the coaching staff of Steve Poppin and
slants and stores to you know, help us win these games,
but also keeping hockey fun and you know, making it
(12:59):
enjoy to come to the rink every day and be
a part of this of this team.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Yeah, I think they've done a really good job of
kind of finding that balance of how how to keep
it light but at the same time making sure the
group is ready to play. And that's one of the
harder things I think in all the sports, is finding
that balance where you're not making the game too serious,
but you're also not making it to where it is
just a joke all the time. And I think that
(13:24):
that comes from the coaching staff, that also comes from
our leadership group with Austin Paganski and Travis Barron and
Kevin Cannan, some of the older guys who do a
good job of making sure we're kind of in the
guidelines of what we can and can't be doing before
and during the game, and there's always a time and
a place for certain things. So I think we've got
(13:45):
a good group in just handling it. But it does
stem from the top down, and I think they've done
a really good job of helping us kind of kind
of find our way through the the ins and outs
of that process.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Yeah, and for you, you know, you signed back here
to Tucson, had a good start when six games with
no scoring, and of course, you know sometimes you just
it goes and flows, right, and now you're on a
really great tearror as of recent Just how has the
experience been for you, like to be back here in Tucson,
be back in your home state. Your parents have been
in the crowd a couple of times these past few
(14:19):
games as well, So what's it been like to be
close to close to the family while just working your
way back to eventually get back to Utah.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Yeah, I think the end goal obviously is to get
back to Utah.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
But at the same time, when when I'm here, it's
enjoying the process and having fun with the guys and
getting better. And I think that was the biggest thing,
is that the big club put a lot of trust
and the manager to put a lot of trust in
me being able to come down here and get better again,
because I do come down here and I have fun
and I enjoy myself and I work on things and
I try different things that will help me grow as
(14:52):
a player. But yeah, it's it's been awesome to play
in front of family again, and play in Arizona and
play for the fans that I I got a play
in final last year and get to see some familiar faces.
So it's one of those things where I'm just kind
of enjoying the process right now and and.
Speaker 4 (15:08):
I think it's hard not to.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
But my main focus is kind of just to focus
on on being in the moment down here and not
worrying about any of the outside noise.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
Justh do you want a unhinged question or do you
want a hockey question.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
I'll let you choose unhinged.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Yeah, Okay, here we go. And I haven't asked that.
I just I just was talking to some of the
interns this weekend at one of the games, and a
few of the interns. You guys have to tell me
if you agree or not. I don't agree, okay, but
the intern said that they think that Peter deliberatory looks
like a Disney Prince, and I was I so, I
(15:46):
was just opened up a whole can of worms. So, Josh,
what is your what Disney Prince matches your vibe?
Speaker 4 (15:52):
My vibe?
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Yeah, you're vibe, And then tell me what you think
about Peter, because I'm.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
First, here's just a cartoon character. I don't know if
he can pass the cartoon character, like.
Speaker 5 (16:02):
A SpongeBob cartoon.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Yeah, yeah, SpongeBob or something like that.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
I don't know if I if I qualify for any
of them, to be honest with you, I think, uh,
this would be a better question for for my sisters.
They they'd be pretty dialed in the Disney Princess and
Prince's theme.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
But I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:23):
I think maybe the guy from he's not a prince
thouse It's hard to really justify the guy from Frozen,
not the bad guy, the.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
Other guy, oh guy, I think right, what's his name?
Speaker 5 (16:39):
Not all off.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
I could off though too. I can see a little
bit of Prince.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
I can see what is his name, I can see that.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Yeah, I think that's about the only one. Just he
likes ice or something. So that works.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
We got to get you a little and then yeahs.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
A tomorrow to the rank. So the two christoph energy.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
There you go, there you go. Okay. So then my
hockey question for you is, so obviously you've lived a
different life than most people, right because of who your
dad is, and but you're in Scottsdale and you're learning hockey.
What did what did the ice scene look like when
(17:27):
you were just starting out? Because the ice scene right
now is so different than where it was twenty two
years ago. There are so many not only just options,
But I remember going to Ocean Side and I feel
like I can say this because Ocean Side isn't around anymore.
But like that ice was choppy, It like hurt to
skate on that ice, you know, like it was not fun.
(17:47):
And then you guys got mullet. But yes, I'm just curious,
what did the evolution of youth hockey growing up in
Phoenix look like from your point of view?
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Yeah, I think I was a pretty pretty fortunate to
grow up close to the ice Den in Scottsdale, which
which has become one of the more prominent rinks in
North America in terms of youth hockey development.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
But it's gorgeous.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Yes, it's an amazing facility, and I think that's that's
part of it is is that. But you look at
how many teams are now compared to how many teams
are when I was younger, and my age grange from
when I grew up, or my age group from when
I grew up, is I played with the same kids
from probably eight years old until I was sixteen, which
(18:31):
if you go around the country, that doesn't happen too
often because there's a lot of interchange between groups and
kids get cut and they bring in new kids. And
we were fortunate enough to kind of carry the same group.
But we had kids from Surprise, Chandler, Peoria, Glendale, Scottsdale,
Phoenix all on the same team, which isn't really allowed
in other states because they have to play for their
(18:52):
kind of county. But yeah, we as a as a
smaller hockey community, had no choice, so we had we
were benefited from that, and then the rinks were good
enough to kind of get by. I think obviously I
love Ocean Side because I got a chance to play
there for a while. But uh, the rinks like Arcadia,
(19:12):
which we had games get canceled because the roof caved
in a couple of times, or having to drive out
all the way to even Chandler being an hour away
is the next nicest rink to go to. It's it
can be a little bit a little bit frustrating at times,
but that's part of the game growing is is having
to drive and and and support the smaller rinks. And
(19:33):
now I mean the ice and Chandler is arguably the
nicest facility in in the Arizona as well, like they've
they've compete with with Scott still and and even Peoria
still does really well out with their.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Rink and with Azy ice.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
So I think it's it's one of those things where
they're all still doing well and you can kind of
growing in that that direction, and kids are wanting to play,
and I think obviously having having a sun l be
around still is going to be the thing that kind
of pushes hockey in the desert to the next level.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
And I do want to say about ocean said. The
last time I skated there was a million years before
you were there, so it was a very different scene.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
Before it got taken down, it got a little bit
nicer and they had the ice a little bit better.
Speaker 4 (20:20):
But I skated on it before I asked you was there.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
And it was like a roller hockey rink, so it
was it was not the nicest.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
You might as well have been on asphalt.
Speaker 5 (20:30):
Yeah, it was a little scary. It was interesting. Josh,
do you have a hockey ich I know your mom does,
do you.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
I don't think so, really, No, I'm trying to think,
like there's like little things that bother me, but nothing
where I'm.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Like really frustrated by. But I'm sure my mom definitely does.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Yeah, I know she does.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
So, Josh.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
We have our game tomorrow against San Diego for two
of this series, two more games in Abbotsford, who's also
on a hot streak right now, and then our holiday break,
and you know, I think going into this home stand
and these next two games on a road, who is
you know, Let's let's have a couple of good games
and then we get the well deserved break. But how
do we do that again for the next three games,
just be laser focused, get some more wins here and
(21:19):
then enjoy the holidays.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Yeah. I think it's we had a discussion before this,
before the six game stretch of winning both serieses and
splitting it up into into three game series and trying
to get two in each and and we've we've swept
series one, that first three game series, and now it's
turned our attention to the next one. And obviously it's
(21:42):
a it's a big home game before the break here,
and you want to win on home and defend home ice.
And if you get that win, then you can kind
of focus on the weekend and finishing off strong. Everyone
will be feeling good and you're heading into a place
that that is going to be kind of fired up
before Smiths break and it'll be a busy, busy arena
(22:02):
in Abbotsford. So just going in there having fun and
enjoying the process before going home and seeing family. I
think the Friday night game will be important, But then Saturday,
no one kind of what the travel is going to
make the next.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Day and no one you're going to go home and
guys are going to be flying right home. Is It's
going to be an anticipated evening.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
So I think just focusing on the games, and I
think focusing on just having fun and enjoying, enjoying yourself
before the break is our focus.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Right, because that's the biggest thing we have the two
pm game in Abbotsford or two or three o'clock, I believe,
and in that night a lot of guys are going
to be seeing their families for the first time in
a while. So not only that's a big game, but
I think a big reward, you know, win or lose,
will be just getting to go home and finally having
the opportunity to unwind a little bit.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
Yeah, for sure, I think that's part of part of
the advantage that you can have anything of that game
is knowing that you can play a little bit more free,
knowing you're going to see family and friends you haven't
seen in a long time.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
Josh, Okay, stay with me for a second. So when
I interview you guys, I do the little these little cards,
and I put your name at the top in your position,
but I also put like your birthday, so I can
see how old you are and where you've come from.
And so I was interviewing Dylan Wells recently and realized
that he shares her birthday with two other people on
the team. Dylan, Sam and Ago have the same birthday.
(23:23):
I don't know if you guys knew that. Yeah, isn't
that bizarre? So then I started like just looking at birthdays.
There's so many of you guys who have birthdays at
the front of the year, like within like the first
four months of the year. So I know your birthday's
coming up, and that you're an Aquarius, and you're an
Aquarius with two other people on the team. Do you
know who they are? I can guess, Yeah, what do
(23:47):
you think.
Speaker 3 (23:47):
I know who they are because I can narrow it
down to who it's not. I want to say, Morsi's one.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
No, not Morsy. I gotta find him on my life.
Oh he is, Uh, he's in February, but he's at
the end of the month. It's the beginning of February.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
I knew he was February, so it was, huh.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
This team has a ridiculous amount of of people born
in late February and the beginning of January. It's it's bizarre.
Speaker 3 (24:19):
I don't even it can't be see, I know guys
based off late and non late birth years.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
Oh okay, because your.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
Draft year if it's past September, your late birth year,
so it's got to be.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Are they older than me?
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Yes, they're both older than you. Okay, I'm going to
just tell you it's Pogo and guest to Yep, Post.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
And russo I wouldn't have got Russ.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
No. Yeah, their birthdays are actually right next to each other.
And you guys are the humanitarians of the Zodiac. I
don't know if you knew that, but yes, sounds good though.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
Yeah, you have humanitarians on the team.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
Yes, a lot of very other, very distinct personalities on
the team also. But yes, are you all done with
your Christmas shopping or do you still have started?
Speaker 4 (25:16):
So?
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Ye, say, I've done some.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
I could go home for I get back to twenty second.
That gives me three days. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
No, I was literally going to do the exact same thing.
I did some at the team store this past weekend.
Just got some stuff for my parents. I don't think
they'll be listening to this, So got some stuff for
my parents because they've been wanting more road winners merch
because they like to go to the games when we're
in southern California. And I'm doing the rest when we
go home, because it's just we have too many games.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
There's just no time to busy right now.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
Yeah, we're ridiculous boys boys so soon Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
Okay, it's online shopping.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
You gotta list birthday today, which is the worst time
birthday ever. Oh, she's a legiti week apart from Christmas,
and so I got to get her two things for
the time when.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
I see Yeah, wait, what's.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
Her name, Gracie.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
I let her know, so she's yeah, birthday today. We'll
have a dinner for her hopefully when at some point.
But she's she's busier than anyone else right now, so
it's hard to get a hold of her today.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
But I'll give her a call later and give her
a happy birthday.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
But yeah, so I got to I actually got to
get six gifts still, two for her and five for
the rest of the group.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
Good lords out for you.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
No, it'll be great. Oh I know what I'm getting them,
So it's all good, all right.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
That's how Christmas shopping goes for when you work in
professional hockey. Just kind of you kind of just wing
it and get the right It's always the right one.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
It's it's the thought that counts.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Right, Yeah, exactly, absolutely well, Josh, good luck on your
Christmas shopping. Good luck for the game tomorrow. Is it's
another scrunch for us, but we'll get some more wins.
We'll keep pushing, and we appreciate you coming on the show.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Yeah sounds good. Thank you, guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Perfect, Josh. We'll see you tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (27:09):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Just had Josh done on the show for Roadrunners. Happier
for our first segment, Kim always such a great time
to talk to Josh. I mean, mister Josh Dome. It's
crazy to think that. You know, we didn't think we
were gonna see him probably ever again, you know, seriously, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
He was gonna you know, stick with the Utah Hockey Club.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Obviously not but again, he's you can just tell, you know,
he's using this opportunity right now to get better every
single day. And you know, as much as we want
Dome to be with the Utah Hockey Club, we want
him to be in the NHL. You know, it's just
again it's one of those, uh, we'll miss you, but
we don't want to see you again. Obviously he's back
(27:55):
here now, but you know we're gonna enjoy the time
while we happened and while we could talk to him
and see him at the rink every single day. And
he's playing really good hockey right now. And I had
a good conversation with Steve Potvin about it, just you know,
the guys like don't are in that kind of bubble
of where, you know, when are they gonna get their
next shot? Uh, to make that Utah Hockey Club roster
(28:16):
and to stay up there. And you know, Steve said,
maybe he's down here because the Utah Hockey Club has
more depth at forward right now than than the blue
line than what we've seen throughout this season. So you know, again,
Josh Jones gonna get the first line minutes here, He's
gonna get the power play time, he's going to get
the PK time, and we'll enjoy him still while is
here right now for the road Runners, because he's definitely
been helping the team win as of late.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
But the thing about Josh I think that makes him
so fun to watch. I mean, you know you know
that he's this is not his last stop, right He's
he's gonna do amazing things in the next league and
he knows it. And so he's just he's having a
great time. Like and the thing about him too, is
it's not just fun to watch him play and like
(28:59):
have an opertunity to talk to him and kind of
get his perspective on the game. But I feel like
he's very contagious. That that brevity that he brings to
the locker room. I think it's very, very infectious, and
I think that the team plays. I don't want to
say that they play better when he's here, but I
(29:19):
think that people are just a little bit more relaxed,
you know, because they're having a good time. Because Josh
sees hockey as fun and it's so funny. It was
so funny listening to him talk about Sam because I
have never between him and Heaves. Sam and Heaves. The
level of dialed in is insane. The time that these
two get to the rink, put their headphones on, and
(29:41):
then have their routines of what they're doing. Like you
could set your clock to Sam going to sit up
in the stands pregame and just focus and just think
about the I don't know what he's doing, but he
just sits up there and it's he's on the ice
looking at the.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Same thing. He does the exact same thing on the road.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
And I think that goes into what Josh was saying
about about the balance, right, you know, asking him. We've
I've again, I've heard from other organizations. I won't say
any names, but just of his locker rooms where the
coaching staff is not making hockey fun. And I think
Steve Povin and John Slaney and you know, Startini all
(30:19):
do a really good job at keeping that balance. And
we see it amongst the players where you know, and yes,
they make it fun and they're not just making it
a joke, as Josh said, is too, but they're having
fun in their pre games. They're having a good time.
And then you have that balance of the guys who
who made more dialed in. Matthew Vilalta too when especially
when he started a game. But as all goalies, you know,
(30:40):
they stay dialed in. They maybe they won't go kick
the ball round, they'll go into the little corner and
kind of focus. And that's okay too. Whatever is that.
Everyone has their own own different pregames. We have our
own pre games as well. Preparing for the game. I mean,
you know, you're out there for an entire three hours
talking I'm up here in the broadcast, both talking for
three hours. We all have our different pregames, and I
(31:02):
think it's a great balance for the team.
Speaker 5 (31:04):
I think you're right. And one of the things I
just noticed so in talking and noticing when Dylan's birthday
was and then deciding, Okay, I want to know a
little bit about all the guys and where they fall
out in the astrological chart because I'm curious about that.
Sam and ke Big are both Capricorns, and that's not
(31:25):
I had to google it because I don't know, like
off the top of my head. But the Capricorn is
relentless and persistent, and they will tell it like it
is their honest and they're their own biggest critic. And
I'm like that to me, Sam and Cameron like that
makes sense.
Speaker 1 (31:41):
Yeah, and they're both playing really good. I believe Cameron
he big six points in his last nine games. Sam
Lipki was scoreless and six but he scored a seventh
goal of the season and now he has eight points
on the year as well, and you never know, now
he might get it started on the hot streak is
as well. So yeah, going back to it, every guy
(32:02):
has their their own pregame, whether they want to be
more social again, kick the soccer ball around, see their
pr slash broadcaster fall over and completely wipe out. Or
there's guys who want to put the headphones on and
you know, just watch the ice and just just get
dialed in, and it's okay. You know, as long as
it helps you perform, it's totally fine. And as long
(32:24):
as it helps you keep the game fun for yourself
as well, that's totally fine too.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
Yeah. Whatever works, like like you have your pregame and
I have my pregame. Yeah, whatever, whatever works for you
and brings you to where you need to be when
the puck drops, then then that's it. That's the thing,
all right, Kim.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
So Christmas coming up very soon, Yeah, I mean for Christmas. Yes,
I hate you. In case you fans don't know yet,
I've mentioned on the broadcast. So next week we're we
actually have a pre recorded special from our season ticket
member holiday party in which we talked to Dyli, Tori
Ardam Douda, and Dylan Wells also, so that's gonna be
(33:05):
a great show. So this will technically be our last
draft before Christmas, So we are going to draft our
favorite Christmas movies.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
I'm excited for this one. I am big.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
You're already and you fans already know. I'm a big
movie guy. I love watching movies, big Christmas movie guy
as well. Nothing better than a watching Christmas movies on
Christmas Day with your family.
Speaker 5 (33:26):
Then you go first, you do that, I go first?
Speaker 1 (33:28):
All right, all right, this is a main staple, and
I think this, this goes for.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Maybe this might be your first pick two.
Speaker 5 (33:35):
El Ah, that was my number two.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
Okay, okay, number two.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
I got you. I got you.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
You can't go wrong right else. It's perfect well farh
it's perfection. Watch it every year, never gets boring. Soundtrack great,
all great, It's a movie you just grew up watching.
Speaker 5 (33:52):
And you can also like quote it throughout the year
and people know exactly what you're talking about. I thinks, yeah,
and I think, gosh, I think I was.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
I might be two years old when that came out.
I think it came out in two thousand and three.
Speaker 1 (34:03):
I've been two years old, and like, I still love
watching it.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
So that's insane.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
That's is so good. I don't think my number one
is on your list at all, but yeah, this it
took me a minute to remember how much I like
this movie. It's a Muppet Christmas Carol. If you have
never seen it, I haven't seen it, but I know
it's good. I've seen it.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
I've seen like the commercials and clips of stuff of it.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
Yeah, it looks anything with the Muppets. But there is
a scene in the Muppet Christmas Carol where Rizzo the rat,
is lighting all the torches in you know, because it's
like old Victorian England or whatever, and or he's like
part of lighting the torches and somebody accidentally sets his
tail on fire and he says, light the lamp, not
the rat. Light the lamp, not the rat. And I've
(34:47):
seen that. I've seen that in hockey memes.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Move more so goodness, you need to watch it.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
It's a good, good movie.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
That sounds chaotic, not the rat that does. Maybe it
will move a movie I check out. I like watching
new movies, right, you know, I can watch the same
movie like Elf, like if it's a Christmas feeling in
the spirit with your family, but by myself, I don't
like rewatching movies, so maybe that would be one I
check out soon. Next one for me, Polar Express. That's
an all time classic two Tom Hanks, you know, it's
(35:16):
one of those. It was like one of it was
like it was cool about that movie too, because it
was like ahead of its time, right. It was like
one of those first ever animated slash live action films
where they had the actors still doing their thing, but
they had all that equipment on, you know, to get
the facial recognition and yeah, and I think it was
like kind of around that time when that technology started
(35:37):
being used. And you know, it's just a classic, you know,
going on the Polar Express, going to see Santa. I
just love the movie of the journey, uh, because it's
like one of those it's not about the destinations, about
the journey or whatever.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Yeah, Polar Express. I love it. I love watching it
in school too.
Speaker 5 (35:54):
What you've never seen Polar Express. Yeah, it doesn't. I'm
not a train person.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
I feel like it's very trained person. It's even about
the train. Well, okay, train's a big part of it.
But that's crazy.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
Then it's the train. The train is the Polar Express.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Yeah, but my gosh, man, that's crazy. I mean, all right,
I might have to watch it.
Speaker 5 (36:14):
I may have to watch it.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
To watch well.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
Also well, also what I loved about that movie. Like,
you know, remember in school when it's like the Friday
before the Holidays and you just spend the whole day
watching movies on like a small TV that your teacher
grabs some DVDs, and like one of the movies is
Polar Express while you're eating all the holiday treats for
the potluck like.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
Those just that movie just brings those memories back for me. Oh,
I love that.
Speaker 5 (36:36):
I love how poignant that is for you. And that's awesome.
Well so, in a similar vein to how wholesome the
Polar expresses. My number two is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation,
which is also a family friendly movie that everybody should
watch at least once. And and not this last Halloween,
but the Halloween before Cameron he Big dressed his cousin for.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Hello, I remember talking about that.
Speaker 5 (37:03):
Yeah, so you, Johnny, you need to watch Christmas. Have
you ever seen Christmas Vacation?
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Christmas Vacation?
Speaker 5 (37:10):
So you can't be mad at being about Polar Express
if you haven't seen Christmas Vacation, because it is iconic.
It's so iconic, it's iconic, like it's the next level.
It's French icon.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
I looked.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
I looked up Christmas vacations, and it's like it's showing
me like destinations.
Speaker 5 (37:25):
For Christmas, like Beverly di'angelo, cousin Eddie. Who's that Randy question?
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Oh okay, Like I haven't okay, I haven't seen this
move in a long time, but I'm sure, Like I'm
sure as a kid, I've watched it. It's like I
recognize it. I recognize him. Yeah, okay, so much. That's
a good pick. Yeah, that's good. Like, okay, yeah, Camery
Hebeg was cousin Eddie. I remember that too. All right,
next one for me, and this is the two way
two way pick him from our Halloween drafts night maybe
(37:55):
before Christmas.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
Oh okay, all right, yeah to that either.
Speaker 1 (37:59):
A Halloween or Christmas movie, and I think it's more Halloween,
but just the fact that has Christmas theme in it too,
you can consider it Christmas.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
Ye.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
It's almost like seasonal, Like you can start it watching
it in like September octoberers and it'll carry you through.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
And it's like a two way pick, right or something.
I don't know, if you want like a two way
player for sure.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
My number three is a movie set at Christmas, but
I don't know if it's a Christmas movie, but it's
set at Christmas, and I don't know if you've seen it.
It's an old movie called Gremlins. And another one that's
super weird.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
Is it the one where it's like, don't feed them after.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
This, yeah, or something that it's I haven't like seen
it by know of it.
Speaker 5 (38:44):
Okay, so like it's a The actual uh premise of
the movie is that this kid is given a gift
of that this guy buys in like this back alley
of like mysterious China town, and it's this little mag
way that's like the cutest most little stuffed bear looking
animal that you can ever see. But then if you
(39:05):
feed it after midnight or get it wet, it turns
into mcgremlin. And yeah, okay, you can't feed it after
minute or it turns into a gremlin. But if you
get it wet, they will multiply. Then you will have
more Gremlins. And I imagine that that's what it's like
living with Curtis Douglas and Ryan Greger.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
Yeah, I can't believe Josh done willingly moved into Ryan
McGregor's and.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
That's a very specific choice to make.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
I know that's uh, that has to be absolute chaos. Okay,
next one for me, all time classic Jim Carrey. How
the Grinch still Christmas Live action don't really need to
explain much to And I think what's so great about
that movie the memes that have still come alive with it.
Nowadays everyone uses so many memes. And then you see
(39:50):
those live action Grinches at like amusement parks and stuff,
and they take after the Jim Carrey live action Gridge,
and I think he's just Jim Carrey solidified what a
action Grinch would actually be like to where no one
else feels like they need to make another Grinch movie,
like they made that animated one. But yeah, you know,
he made Grinch come alive in like religion.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
Yeah, good call, good call. So I had to include
in this list a rom com because they're the Hallmark
channel was built on the backbone of the Christmas rom
com right, It's an entire channel. So I literally was like, oh,
I could pick like any Hallmark Christmas movie, and then
I was like, Okay, no, I'm gonna pick Classic up
(40:33):
and coming Sandra Bullock while you were sleeping with Bill Pullman.
I'm sure you haven't seen it, but it is such
a good Christmas movie about a woman living in Chicago
who is the token taker at like I don't know
if they call it the l or the bar or
like Metro, whatever their elevated transit system is. She and
(40:54):
she sees a guy get mugged and he she tries,
she saves him, but he he ends up in the
hospital and he doesn't have any memory, and she just
kind of talking to herself because she's in love with him.
She says, oh, it's going to marry him, and a
nurse overhears her, and then his whole family comes and
they all think that this is his fiance because they
(41:15):
don't know and he can't remember or he's like asleep
for most of this and yeah, and so she ends
up falling in love with the fan. They're so amazing
all over the Christmas holiday because she's all by herself parents.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Let me guess when he wakes up, it goes absolutely
it's just like insane.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
Does he wake up?
Speaker 5 (41:33):
Eventually he wakes up with a chainsaw and he just
goes crazy. No, I'm just kidding. No, he's like his
family's like of course, you remember Lucy And he's like no,
They're like, no, you must you must be not remembering correctly,
because of course you remember Lucy, like she's amazing. And
I don't want to give anything away because it's so good.
(41:54):
But there's a lot of twisty turns in like that,
so cute.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
It's concept. I might have to check that out too. Oh,
you're giving me all these great Christmas recommended? Okay, is
this last? Yeah, last one for me?
Speaker 5 (42:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
It's actually a movie I watched like literally a couple
of days ago, but I really enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
It's called Klaus just kale a u s uh.
Speaker 5 (42:17):
Animate named Klaus once not good but sorry go ahead, sorry.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
You say Date Center or what animated movie.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
It's about this kind of like privileged rich uh like
uh son of a like successful owner of like all
the mailing and stuff in the entire like country or something.
So this kid's like born with a silver spoon and
his dad wants him to train to become the next
mailman and uh kids spoiled won't like train for it
(42:49):
or anything, so they send him to some place with
like no mail at all, just like an absolute crap town.
Uh and long story short, he tries to build up
the mailing there because he has like a set deadline.
He does that by having kids write him letters that
he delivers to a woodsman who's Santa Claus, and then
they deliver the presence and it becomes a whole thing,
(43:13):
and like the townspeople are in like a two thousand
year long war that they've kept into this town and
they don't want everyone to come together.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
I don't want spoils much. But it's a really good movie.
Speaker 5 (43:24):
So I just had to google it because I did
not I've not heard of it before, but it is
a cartoon and the first like review that pops up
about it, somebody says, all in all, Klaus might be
one of the best and most unexpected holiday films that
I have seen in years.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
Came out in twenty nineteen. No, it's really good and.
Speaker 5 (43:41):
I love Jason Schwartzman, So yes, I will have to
check that out.
Speaker 2 (43:45):
Yeah, good one, very exciting.
Speaker 5 (43:47):
Okay, So my number five it's a movie called Scrooged
with Bill Murray and oh my gosh, who else? I
think Charlton Heston. Oh my gosh, I'm I don't have
to google it and see who's in it. But it's
with Bill Murray, and it is the story of a
Christmas Carol, but kind of more like like within the
(44:07):
last like it was like in the early two thousands
maybe or so. So it's that, you know, the horrible
human being who you know only wants to make money,
and then the three ghosts come visit him to teach
him about what the Christmas spirit is really about, and
he turns it all around and he becomes a better
person and the three the three ghosts that come to
(44:29):
visit him are really really funny. But it's and it's
Bill Murray too, so it's like, right, it's goofball.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
You can't go wrong with Bill Murray.
Speaker 5 (44:36):
Yes. Oh and oh my gosh, it's from nineteen eighty eight.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
Yeah no, that's probably what. I haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 5 (44:42):
If you get a chance, you should watch it's it's
probably very dated, but it's pretty funny.
Speaker 2 (44:47):
Oh goodness.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
Well yeah, lots of great movie recommendations, Kim. Great draft
as always, our last draft before the holidays.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Well, I guess I'm already in.
Speaker 1 (44:54):
The holidays, but uh yeah, looks looking for the Christmas
coming up. We have a game tomorrow. Games Games against
the Abbotsford Canucks. Roadrunners are playing great hockey right now.
Matthew Wolaltza two games in a row with a shutout,
fifty straight saves, seventy six saves in his last seventy
eight shots. He's face in the beginning of this homestand
he's playing great hockey. Team's playing great hockey right now.
(45:17):
We're finally seeing that stretch that the Roadrunners have been
looking for. But the best thing to do is just
keep continuing it.
Speaker 5 (45:23):
Yeah, they look absolutely I don't want to say dominant,
but they're just a lot of fun to watch right now.
And I don't know if you noticed in the game
last night, the way that the goals were scored the
one and two goal, the goal was actually scored by
the center with an assist from left wing right wing
on both goals. So it was secondly second line and
then third line or was it first? Was it third
(45:45):
line that scored first and then No? I can't remember,
but either way, it's so funny because he usually second,
second line and then third line.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
Is that how hard line scored first, second line scored second?
Speaker 5 (45:54):
Okay, there you go, all right, because usually there's like
maybe a defenseman or maybe there was a line change
that was happening, and so it's not always that uniform.
So it was just kind of funny to see that
last night that all the pieces are coming together and
Steve's not gonna mess with the good thing that's happening
right now.
Speaker 1 (46:10):
Yeah, this is like the first time this season that
we're starting to see the lines kind of solidified.
Speaker 2 (46:15):
You know.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
It was all the juggling trying to see who would
work with who better, and I think Steve and Podvin
and co. Have finally found what they want, not only
in the Ford lines, but also the defensive pairings as well.
Matthew Walalta is six games in a row with a
start well Steve, he starts tomorrow, Kim could be dying Wells.
But again you're right, You got right your hot hand
of Matthew Balalta as he has a shutout streak going
(46:38):
into tomorrow night. Out of time here, folks, we appreciate
you listening on again. This has been Roadrunners happier. We
will see you tomorrow night at the Tucson Arena. Don't
forget come for your Christmas ornaments. First fifteen hundred fans
in attendance, we'll receive a Christmas ornament. Coming to our
